सूत उवाच ।
ततः कामगमः पक्षी महावीर्यो महाबलः ।
मातुरन्तिकमागच्छत्परं तीरं महोदधेः ॥१॥

tataḥ kāmagamaḥ pakṣī mahāvīryo mahābalaḥ ,
māturantikamāgacchatparaṁ tīraṁ mahodadheḥ.

1. Sūta said: Then, the bird [Garuḍa], who could go anywhere at will, possessing great valor and immense strength, came to the other shore of the great ocean, where his mother was.
यत्र सा विनता तस्मिन्पणितेन पराजिता ।
अतीव दुःखसंतप्ता दासीभावमुपागता ॥२॥
2. yatra sā vinatā tasminpaṇitena parājitā ,
atīva duḥkhasaṁtaptā dāsībhāvamupāgatā.

2. There, Vinatā, defeated by the wager, was exceedingly tormented by sorrow and had fallen into servitude.
ततः कदाचिद्विनतां प्रवणां पुत्रसंनिधौ ।
काल आहूय वचनं कद्रूरिदमभाषत ॥३॥
3. tataḥ kadācidvinatāṁ pravaṇāṁ putrasaṁnidhau ,
kāla āhūya vacanaṁ kadrūridamabhāṣata.
3. tataḥ kadācit vinatām pravaṇām putrasaṃnidhau
kālaḥ āhūya vacanam kadrūḥ idam abhāṣata
3. Then, one day, Kadrū called Vinatā, who was attentive in the presence of her son, and spoke these words.
नागानामालयं भद्रे सुरम्यं रमणीयकम् ।
समुद्रकुक्षावेकान्ते तत्र मां विनते वह ॥४॥
4. nāgānāmālayaṁ bhadre suramyaṁ ramaṇīyakam ,
samudrakukṣāvekānte tatra māṁ vinate vaha.

samudrakukṣau ekānte tatra mām vinate vaha
4. “O gentle Vinatā, carry me there, to the very beautiful and charming abode of the Nāgas, which is in a secluded spot within the ocean's depths.”
ततः सुपर्णमाता तामवहत्सर्पमातरम् ।
पन्नगान्गरुडश्चापि मातुर्वचनचोदितः ॥५॥
5. tataḥ suparṇamātā tāmavahatsarpamātaram ,
pannagāngaruḍaścāpi māturvacanacoditaḥ.
5. tataḥ suparṇamātā tām avahat sarpamātaram
pannagān garuḍaḥ ca api mātuḥ vacanacoditaḥ
5. Then, the mother of Suparṇa (Vinatā) carried her, the mother of serpents (Kadrū). And Garuḍa, impelled by his mother's command, also carried the serpents.
स सूर्यस्याभितो याति वैनतेयो विहंगमः ।
सूर्यरश्मिपरीताश्च मूर्च्छिताः पन्नगाभवन् ।
तदवस्थान्सुतान्दृष्ट्वा कद्रूः शक्रमथास्तुवत् ॥६॥
6. sa sūryasyābhito yāti vainateyo vihaṁgamaḥ ,
sūryaraśmiparītāśca mūrcchitāḥ pannagābhavan ,
tadavasthānsutāndṛṣṭvā kadrūḥ śakramathāstuvat.
6. saḥ sūryasya abhitaḥ yāti vainateyaḥ
vihaṅgamaḥ sūryaraśmiparītāḥ ca mūrcchitāḥ
pannagāḥ abhavan tadavasthān
sutān dṛṣṭvā kadrūḥ śakram atha astuvat
6. Garuda, the bird, circled the sun. And the serpents, afflicted by the sun's rays, fainted. Seeing her sons in that state, Kadru then praised Indra.
नमस्ते देवदेवेश नमस्ते बलसूदन ।
नमुचिघ्न नमस्तेऽस्तु सहस्राक्ष शचीपते ॥७॥
7. namaste devadeveśa namaste balasūdana ,
namucighna namaste'stu sahasrākṣa śacīpate.

7. Salutations to you, O Lord of lords of gods! Salutations to you, Destroyer of Bala! Salutations to you, Slayer of Namuci, O thousand-eyed one, Lord of Shachi!
सर्पाणां सूर्यतप्तानां वारिणा त्वं प्लवो भव ।
त्वमेव परमं त्राणमस्माकममरोत्तम ॥८॥
8. sarpāṇāṁ sūryataptānāṁ vāriṇā tvaṁ plavo bhava ,
tvameva paramaṁ trāṇamasmākamamarottama.
8. sarpāṇām sūryataptānām vāriṇā tvam plavaḥ bhava
tvam eva paramam trāṇam asmākam amarottama
8. For these serpents, scorched by the sun, may you become a protector with water (rain). You alone are our supreme refuge, O best among the immortals!
ईशो ह्यसि पयः स्रष्टुं त्वमनल्पं पुरंदर ।
त्वमेव मेघस्त्वं वायुस्त्वमग्निर्वैद्युतोऽम्बरे ॥९॥
9. īśo hyasi payaḥ sraṣṭuṁ tvamanalpaṁ puraṁdara ,
tvameva meghastvaṁ vāyustvamagnirvaidyuto'mbare.
9. īśaḥ hi asi payaḥ sraṣṭum tvam analpam purandara tvam
eva meghaḥ tvam vāyuḥ tvam agniḥ vaidyutaḥ ambare
9. Indeed, you are capable of creating abundant water, O Destroyer of cities! You alone are the cloud, you are the wind, and you are the lightning-fire in the sky.
त्वमभ्रघनविक्षेप्ता त्वामेवाहुः पुनर्घनम् ।
त्वं वज्रमतुलं घोरं घोषवांस्त्वं बलाहकः ॥१०॥
10. tvamabhraghanavikṣeptā tvāmevāhuḥ punarghanam ,
tvaṁ vajramatulaṁ ghoraṁ ghoṣavāṁstvaṁ balāhakaḥ.
10. tvam abhraghanavikṣeptā tvām eva āhuḥ punaḥ ghanam
tvam vajram atulam ghoram ghoṣavān tvam balāhakaḥ
10. You are the scatterer of dense clouds. They also call you the cloud itself again. You are the incomparable, terrible thunderbolt; you are the thundering cloud.
स्रष्टा त्वमेव लोकानां संहर्ता चापराजितः ।
त्वं ज्योतिः सर्वभूतानां त्वमादित्यो विभावसुः ॥११॥
11. sraṣṭā tvameva lokānāṁ saṁhartā cāparājitaḥ ,
tvaṁ jyotiḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ tvamādityo vibhāvasuḥ.
11. sraṣṭā tvam eva lokānām saṃhartā ca aparājitaḥ
tvam jyotiḥ sarvabhūtānām tvam ādityaḥ vibhāvasuḥ
11. You are indeed the creator of the worlds, and the unconquered destroyer. You are the light of all beings, you are the Sun, the intensely luminous one.
त्वं महद्भूतमाश्चर्यं त्वं राजा त्वं सुरोत्तमः ।
त्वं विष्णुस्त्वं सहस्राक्षस्त्वं देवस्त्वं परायणम् ॥१२॥
12. tvaṁ mahadbhūtamāścaryaṁ tvaṁ rājā tvaṁ surottamaḥ ,
tvaṁ viṣṇustvaṁ sahasrākṣastvaṁ devastvaṁ parāyaṇam.
12. tvam mahat bhūtam āścaryam tvam rājā tvam surottamaḥ
tvam viṣṇuḥ tvam sahasrākṣaḥ tvam devaḥ tvam parāyaṇam
12. You are the great, wondrous being; you are the King, you are the best among the gods. You are Vishnu, you are the thousand-eyed one; you are the God, you are the ultimate refuge.
त्वं सर्वममृतं देव त्वं सोमः परमार्चितः ।
त्वं मुहूर्तस्तिथिश्च त्वं लवस्त्वं वै पुनः क्षणः ॥१३॥
13. tvaṁ sarvamamṛtaṁ deva tvaṁ somaḥ paramārcitaḥ ,
tvaṁ muhūrtastithiśca tvaṁ lavastvaṁ vai punaḥ kṣaṇaḥ.
13. tvam sarvam amṛtam deva tvam somaḥ paramārcitaḥ tvam
muhūrtaḥ tithiḥ ca tvam lavaḥ tvam vai punaḥ kṣaṇaḥ
13. O God, you are everything, the immortal essence. You are Soma, who is supremely worshipped. You are the Muhurta, and the Tithi; you are the Lava, and also, the Kṣaṇa (moment).
शुक्लस्त्वं बहुलश्चैव कला काष्ठा त्रुटिस्तथा ।
संवत्सरर्तवो मासा रजन्यश्च दिनानि च ॥१४॥
14. śuklastvaṁ bahulaścaiva kalā kāṣṭhā truṭistathā ,
saṁvatsarartavo māsā rajanyaśca dināni ca.
14. śuklaḥ tvam bahulaḥ ca eva kalā kāṣṭhā truṭiḥ tathā
saṃvatsaraḥ ṛtavaḥ māsāḥ rajanyaḥ ca dināni ca
14. You are the bright and the dark fortnights. You are also Kala, Kashtha, and Truti. Furthermore, you are the years, seasons, months, nights, and days.
त्वमुत्तमा सगिरिवना वसुंधरा सभास्करं वितिमिरमम्बरं तथा ।
महोदधिः सतिमितिमिंगिलस्तथा महोर्मिमान्बहुमकरो झषालयः ॥१५॥
15. tvamuttamā sagirivanā vasuṁdharā; sabhāskaraṁ vitimiramambaraṁ tathā ,
mahodadhiḥ satimitimiṁgilastathā; mahormimānbahumakaro jhaṣālayaḥ.
15. tvam uttamā sagirivanā vasundharā
sabhāskaram vitimiram ambaram tathā
mahodadhiḥ satimitimiṅgilaḥ tathā
mahormimān bahumakaraḥ jhaṣālayaḥ
15. You are the supreme Earth, with its mountains and forests. You are the sky, illuminated by the sun and free from darkness. And you are the great ocean, containing whales and great whales, possessing mighty waves, teeming with many sea-monsters, and serving as the abode of fish.
महद्यशस्त्वमिति सदाभिपूज्यसे मनीषिभिर्मुदितमना महर्षिभिः ।
अभिष्टुतः पिबसि च सोममध्वरे वषट्कृतान्यपि च हवींषि भूतये ॥१६॥
16. mahadyaśastvamiti sadābhipūjyase; manīṣibhirmuditamanā maharṣibhiḥ ,
abhiṣṭutaḥ pibasi ca somamadhvare; vaṣaṭkṛtānyapi ca havīṁṣi bhūtaye.
16. mahat yaśaḥ tvam iti sadā abhipūjyase
manīṣibhiḥ muditamanaḥ maharṣibhiḥ
abhiṣṭutaḥ pibasi ca somam adhvare
vaṣaṭkṛtāni api ca havīṃṣi bhūtaye
16. You, possessing great fame and a joyful mind, are thus always worshipped by the wise and by great sages. Praised, you drink Soma in the sacrifice, and also oblations offered with the 'Vaṣaṭ' exclamation, for well-being.
त्वं विप्रैः सततमिहेज्यसे फलार्थं वेदाङ्गेष्वतुलबलौघ गीयसे च ।
त्वद्धेतोर्यजनपरायणा द्विजेन्द्रा वेदाङ्गान्यभिगमयन्ति सर्ववेदैः ॥१७॥
17. tvaṁ vipraiḥ satatamihejyase phalārthaṁ; vedāṅgeṣvatulabalaugha gīyase ca ,
tvaddhetoryajanaparāyaṇā dvijendrā; vedāṅgānyabhigamayanti sarvavedaiḥ.
17. tvam vipraiḥ satatam iha ijyase phalam
artham vedāṅgeṣu atulabalaugha gīyase
ca tvad hetoḥ yajanaparāyaṇāḥ dvijendrāḥ
vedāṅgāni abhigamayanti sarvavedaiḥ
17. Here, you are constantly worshipped by Brahmins for the sake of results. O you who possess an immeasurable host of power, you are also praised in the Vedangas. Because of you, the chief Brahmins, devoted to sacrifice, make the Vedangas accessible through all the Vedas.
