वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततस्ते प्रययुर्हृष्टाः प्रहृष्टनरवाहनाः ।
रथघोषेण महता पूरयन्तो वसुंधराम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataste prayayurhṛṣṭāḥ prahṛṣṭanaravāhanāḥ ,
rathaghoṣeṇa mahatā pūrayanto vasuṁdharām.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Thereafter, they departed joyful, with their men and conveyances greatly delighted, filling the earth with a great roar of chariots.
संस्तूयमानाः स्तुतिभिः सूतमागधबन्दिभिः ।
स्वेन सैन्येन संवीता यथादित्याः स्वरश्मिभिः ॥२॥
2. saṁstūyamānāḥ stutibhiḥ sūtamāgadhabandibhiḥ ,
svena sainyena saṁvītā yathādityāḥ svaraśmibhiḥ.
2. saṃstūyamānāḥ stutibhiḥ sūtamāgadhabandibhiḥ
svena sainyena saṃvītāḥ yathā ādityāḥ svarśmibhiḥ
2. Being highly praised with eulogies by charioteers, bards, and panegyrists, they were surrounded by their own army, just as the solar deities (ādityas) are enveloped by their own rays.
पाण्डुरेणातपत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन मूर्धनि ।
बभौ युधिष्ठिरस्तत्र पौर्णमास्यामिवोडुराट् ॥३॥
3. pāṇḍureṇātapatreṇa dhriyamāṇena mūrdhani ,
babhau yudhiṣṭhirastatra paurṇamāsyāmivoḍurāṭ.
3. pāṇḍureṇa ātapatreṇa dhriyamāṇena mūrdhani babhau
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tatra paurṇamāsyām iva uḍurāṭ
3. With a white umbrella being held over his head, Yudhishthira shone there like the moon (uḍurāṭ) on a full moon night.
जयाशिषः प्रहृष्टानां नराणां पथि पाण्डवः ।
प्रत्यगृह्णाद्यथान्यायं यथावत्पुरुषर्षभः ॥४॥
4. jayāśiṣaḥ prahṛṣṭānāṁ narāṇāṁ pathi pāṇḍavaḥ ,
pratyagṛhṇādyathānyāyaṁ yathāvatpuruṣarṣabhaḥ.
4. jayāśiṣaḥ prahr̥ṣṭānām narāṇām pathi pāṇḍavaḥ
prati agr̥hṇāt yathānyāyaṃ yathāvat puruṣarṣabhaḥ
4. pāṇḍavaḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ pathi prahr̥ṣṭānām narāṇām
jayāśiṣaḥ yathānyāyaṃ yathāvat prati agr̥hṇāt
4. On the road, the Pandava, that bull among men, duly and properly received the blessings of victory from the joyful people.
तथैव सैनिका राजन्राजानमनुयान्ति ये ।
तेषां हलहलाशब्दो दिवं स्तब्ध्वा व्यतिष्ठत ॥५॥
5. tathaiva sainikā rājanrājānamanuyānti ye ,
teṣāṁ halahalāśabdo divaṁ stabdhvā vyatiṣṭhata.
5. tathā eva sainikā rājan rājānam anuyānti ye
teṣām halahalāśabdaḥ divaṃ stabdhr̥ā vyatiṣṭhata
5. rājan tathā eva ye sainikā rājānam anuyānti,
teṣām halahalāśabdaḥ divaṃ stabdhr̥ā vyatiṣṭhata
5. O King, similarly, the soldiers who followed the king raised a tumultuous shout (halahalāśabda) which, having filled the sky, remained there.
स सरांसि नदीश्चैव वनान्युपवनानि च ।
अत्यक्रामन्महाराजो गिरिं चैवान्वपद्यत ॥६॥
6. sa sarāṁsi nadīścaiva vanānyupavanāni ca ,
atyakrāmanmahārājo giriṁ caivānvapadyata.
6. sa sarāṃsi nadīḥ ca eva vanāni upavanāni ca
ati akrāmat mahārājaḥ giriṃ ca eva anu apadyata
6. sa mahārājaḥ sarāṃsi ca nadīḥ ca eva vanāni ca upavanāni ca ati akrāmat,
ca eva giriṃ anu apadyata
6. That great king crossed over lakes, rivers, forests, and groves, and then indeed reached a mountain.
तस्मिन्देशे च राजेन्द्र यत्र तद्द्रव्यमुत्तमम् ।
चक्रे निवेशनं राजा पाण्डवः सह सैनिकैः ।
शिवे देशे समे चैव तदा भरतसत्तम ॥७॥
7. tasmindeśe ca rājendra yatra taddravyamuttamam ,
cakre niveśanaṁ rājā pāṇḍavaḥ saha sainikaiḥ ,
śive deśe same caiva tadā bharatasattama.
7. tasmin deśe ca rājendra yatra tat
dravyam uttamam cakre niveśanaṃ rājā
pāṇḍavaḥ saha sainikaiḥ śive deśe
same ca eva tadā bharatasattama
7. ca rājendra bharatasattama,
tadā rājā pāṇḍavaḥ sainikaiḥ saha,
yatra tat uttamam dravyam,
tasmin śive same deśe eva niveśanaṃ cakre
7. And O best of kings (rājendra), in that region where there was excellent treasure, the Pandava king, with his soldiers, then made an encampment in an auspicious and level place, O best of Bharatas (bharatasattama).
अग्रतो ब्राह्मणान्कृत्वा तपोविद्यादमान्वितान् ।
पुरोहितं च कौरव्य वेदवेदाङ्गपारगम् ॥८॥
8. agrato brāhmaṇānkṛtvā tapovidyādamānvitān ,
purohitaṁ ca kauravya vedavedāṅgapāragam.
8. agrataḥ brāhmaṇān kṛtvā tapas-vidyā-dama-anvitān
purohitam ca kauravya veda-vedāṅga-pāragam
8. kauravya tapas-vidyā-dama-anvitān brāhmaṇān ca
veda-vedāṅga-pāragam purohitam agrataḥ kṛtvā
8. O descendant of Kuru, having placed in front the Brahmins who were endowed with spiritual discipline (tapas), knowledge, and self-control, as well as the chief priest who had mastered the Vedas and their auxiliary branches.
प्राङ्निवेशात्तु राजानं ब्राह्मणाः सपुरोधसः ।
कृत्वा शान्तिं यथान्यायं सर्वतः पर्यवारयन् ॥९॥
9. prāṅniveśāttu rājānaṁ brāhmaṇāḥ sapurodhasaḥ ,
kṛtvā śāntiṁ yathānyāyaṁ sarvataḥ paryavārayan.
9. prāk-niveśāt tu rājānam brāhmaṇāḥ sa-purodhasaḥ
kṛtvā śāntim yathānyāyam sarvataḥ paryavārayan
9. prāk-niveśāt tu sa-purodhasaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ yathānyāyam
śāntim kṛtvā rājānam sarvataḥ paryavārayan
9. Indeed, before the establishment of the settlement, the Brahmins, accompanied by their chief priest, performed the propitiatory rites (śānti) according to custom and then surrounded the king from all sides.
कृत्वा च मध्ये राजानममात्यांश्च यथाविधि ।
षट्पथं नवसंस्थानं निवेशं चक्रिरे द्विजाः ॥१०॥
10. kṛtvā ca madhye rājānamamātyāṁśca yathāvidhi ,
ṣaṭpathaṁ navasaṁsthānaṁ niveśaṁ cakrire dvijāḥ.
10. kṛtvā ca madhye rājānam amātyān ca yathāvidhi
ṣaṭpatham nava-saṃsthānam niveśam cakrire dvijāḥ
10. dvijāḥ rājānam amātyān ca madhye yathāvidhi kṛtvā
ca ṣaṭpatham nava-saṃsthānam niveśam cakrire
10. And after duly placing the king and his ministers in the center, the Brahmins established a new settlement (niveśa) with six main roads, structured according to proper arrangements.
मत्तानां वारणेन्द्राणां निवेशं च यथाविधि ।
कारयित्वा स राजेन्द्रो ब्राह्मणानिदमब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. mattānāṁ vāraṇendrāṇāṁ niveśaṁ ca yathāvidhi ,
kārayitvā sa rājendro brāhmaṇānidamabravīt.
11. mattānām vāraṇa-indrāṇām niveśam ca yathāvidhi
kārayitvā sa rāja-indraḥ brāhmaṇān idam abravīt
11. sa rāja-indraḥ mattānām vāraṇa-indrāṇām niveśam
ca yathāvidhi kārayitvā brāhmaṇān idam abravīt
11. And after having properly established the enclosures for the rutting, lordly elephants, that excellent king then said this to the Brahmins.
अस्मिन्कार्ये द्विजश्रेष्ठा नक्षत्रे दिवसे शुभे ।
यथा भवन्तो मन्यन्ते कर्तुमर्हथ तत्तथा ॥१२॥
12. asminkārye dvijaśreṣṭhā nakṣatre divase śubhe ,
yathā bhavanto manyante kartumarhatha tattathā.
12. asmin kārye dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ nakṣatre divase śubhe
yathā bhavantaḥ manyante kartum arhatha tat tathā
12. O best among the twice-born (dvija), concerning this task, on an auspicious constellation and day, you should proceed exactly as you deem appropriate.
न नः कालात्ययो वै स्यादिहैव परिलम्बताम् ।
इति निश्चित्य विप्रेन्द्राः क्रियतां यदनन्तरम् ॥१३॥
13. na naḥ kālātyayo vai syādihaiva parilambatām ,
iti niścitya viprendrāḥ kriyatāṁ yadanantaram.
13. na naḥ kālātyayaḥ vai syāt iha eva parilambatam
iti niścitya viprendrāḥ kriyatām yat anantaram
13. Indeed, there should be no waste of our time by lingering here. Therefore, O chiefs of brahmins, having resolved this, let what comes next be done.
श्रुत्वैतद्वचनं राज्ञो ब्राह्मणाः सपुरोधसः ।
इदमूचुर्वचो हृष्टा धर्मराजप्रियेप्सवः ॥१४॥
14. śrutvaitadvacanaṁ rājño brāhmaṇāḥ sapurodhasaḥ ,
idamūcurvaco hṛṣṭā dharmarājapriyepsavaḥ.
14. śrutvā etat vacanam rājñaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ sa-purodhasaḥ
idam ūcuḥ vacaḥ hṛṣṭāḥ dharmarājapriyepsavaḥ
14. Having heard this speech from the king, the Brahmins, along with their chief priests, delighted and eager to please the King of Dharma (dharmarāja), spoke these words.
अद्यैव नक्षत्रमहश्च पुण्यं यतामहे श्रेष्ठतमं क्रियासु ।
अम्भोभिरद्येह वसाम राजन्नुपोष्यतां चापि भवद्भिरद्य ॥१५॥
15. adyaiva nakṣatramahaśca puṇyaṁ; yatāmahe śreṣṭhatamaṁ kriyāsu ,
ambhobhiradyeha vasāma rāja;nnupoṣyatāṁ cāpi bhavadbhiradya.
15. adya eva nakṣatram ahaḥ ca puṇyam
yatāmahe śreṣṭhatamam kriyāsu
ambhobhiḥ adya iha vasāma rājan
upoṣyatām ca api bhavadbhiḥ adya
15. Today itself the constellation and the day are auspicious, and we shall undertake the most excellent rituals. O King, we shall reside here today, sustained by water, and let fasting also be observed by you today.
श्रुत्वा तु तेषां द्विजसत्तमानां कृतोपवासा रजनीं नरेन्द्राः ।
ऊषुः प्रतीताः कुशसंस्तरेषु यथाध्वरेषु ज्वलिता हव्यवाहाः ॥१६॥
16. śrutvā tu teṣāṁ dvijasattamānāṁ; kṛtopavāsā rajanīṁ narendrāḥ ,
ūṣuḥ pratītāḥ kuśasaṁstareṣu; yathādhvareṣu jvalitā havyavāhāḥ.
16. śrutvā tu teṣām dvijasattamānām
kṛtopavāsāḥ rajanīm narendrāḥ
ūṣuḥ pratītāḥ kuśasaṃstareṣu
yathā adhvareṣu jvalitāḥ havyavāhāḥ
16. Having heard those words from the best among the twice-born (brahmins), the kings, having observed a fast for the night, remained contentedly on beds of kuśa grass, just like the sacred fires kindled during (Vedic rituals).
ततो निशा सा व्यगमन्महात्मनां संशृण्वतां विप्रसमीरिता गिरः ।
ततः प्रभाते विमले द्विजर्षभा वचोऽब्रुवन्धर्मसुतं नराधिपम् ॥१७॥
17. tato niśā sā vyagamanmahātmanāṁ; saṁśṛṇvatāṁ viprasamīritā giraḥ ,
tataḥ prabhāte vimale dvijarṣabhā; vaco'bruvandharmasutaṁ narādhipam.
17. tataḥ niśā sā vyagaman mahātmanām
saṃśṛṇvatām viprasamīritāḥ giraḥ
tataḥ prabhāte vimale dvijarṣabhāḥ
vacaḥ abruvan dharmasutam narādhipam
17. Then that night passed for the great-souled individuals as they listened to the words spoken by the brahmins. Subsequently, in the pure dawn, the foremost among the twice-born spoke words to the son of Dharma, the king.
