धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
पृच्छामि त्वां संजय राजमध्ये किमब्रवीद्वाक्यमदीनसत्त्वः ।
धनंजयस्तात युधां प्रणेता दुरात्मनां जीवितच्छिन्महात्मा ॥१॥

1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
pṛcchāmi tvāṁ saṁjaya rājamadhye; kimabravīdvākyamadīnasattvaḥ ,
dhanaṁjayastāta yudhāṁ praṇetā; durātmanāṁ jīvitacchinmahātmā.

Dhritarashtra said: O Sanjaya, dear one (tāta), I ask you: what words did the high-souled (mahātman), energetic (adīnasattva), Dhananjaya (Arjuna) - the leader of battles and the destroyer of the lives of the wicked - speak in the assembly of kings?
संजय उवाच ।
दुर्योधनो वाचमिमां शृणोतु यदब्रवीदर्जुनो योत्स्यमानः ।
युधिष्ठिरस्यानुमते महात्मा धनंजयः शृण्वतः केशवस्य ॥२॥

Sanjaya said: May Duryodhana hear these words which Arjuna (Dhananjaya), the great-souled (mahātman) one about to fight, spoke with the approval of Yudhishthira, and while Krishna (Keśava) was listening.
अन्वत्रस्तो बाहुवीर्यं विदान उपह्वरे वासुदेवस्य धीरः ।
अवोचन्मां योत्स्यमानः किरीटी मध्ये ब्रूया धार्तराष्ट्रं कुरूणाम् ॥३॥

3. anvatrasto bāhuvīryaṁ vidāna; upahvare vāsudevasya dhīraḥ ,
avocanmāṁ yotsyamānaḥ kirīṭī; madhye brūyā dhārtarāṣṭraṁ kurūṇām.

anu atrastaḥ bāhu-vīryam vidānaḥ
upahvare vāsudevasya dhīraḥ

The steadfast (dhīra) Kirīṭin (Arjuna), unfrightened, and knowing his own arm-strength, spoke to me from the vicinity of Vasudeva (Krishna). He, who was about to fight, said: 'You should speak to Dhritarashtra (Dhārtarāṣṭra) in the midst of the Kurus.'
ये वै राजानः पाण्डवायोधनाय समानीताः शृण्वतां चापि तेषाम् ।
यथा समग्रं वचनं मयोक्तं सहामात्यं श्रावयेथा नृपं तम् ॥४॥

4. ye vai rājānaḥ pāṇḍavāyodhanāya; samānītāḥ śṛṇvatāṁ cāpi teṣām ,
yathā samagraṁ vacanaṁ mayoktaṁ; sahāmātyaṁ śrāvayethā nṛpaṁ tam.
yathā samagraṁ vacanaṁ mayoktaṁ; sahāmātyaṁ śrāvayethā nṛpaṁ tam.

ye vai rājānaḥ pāṇḍavāyodhanāya
samānītāḥ śṛṇvatām ca api teṣām
yathā samagram vacanam mayā uktam
saha amātyam śrāvayethāḥ nṛpam tam
samānītāḥ śṛṇvatām ca api teṣām
yathā samagram vacanam mayā uktam
saha amātyam śrāvayethāḥ nṛpam tam

Indeed, you should make that king (Duryodhana), along with his ministers, hear the complete message that I have spoken, in the presence of those very kings who have been assembled for the Pandavas' war.
यथा नूनं देवराजस्य देवाः शुश्रूषन्ते वज्रहस्तस्य सर्वे ।
तथाशृण्वन्पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयाश्च किरीटिना वाचमुक्तां समर्थाम् ॥५॥
तथाशृण्वन्पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयाश्च किरीटिना वाचमुक्तां समर्थाम् ॥५॥
5. yathā nūnaṁ devarājasya devāḥ; śuśrūṣante vajrahastasya sarve ,
tathāśṛṇvanpāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayāśca; kirīṭinā vācamuktāṁ samarthām.
tathāśṛṇvanpāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayāśca; kirīṭinā vācamuktāṁ samarthām.

Just as all the gods surely serve their king (devarāja) Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt, so too did the Pandavas and the Srinjayas listen to the powerful words spoken by the crowned one (Arjuna).
इत्यब्रवीदर्जुनो योत्स्यमानो गाण्डीवधन्वा लोहितपद्मनेत्रः ।
न चेद्राज्यं मुञ्चति धार्तराष्ट्रो युधिष्ठिरस्याजमीढस्य राज्ञः ।
अस्ति नूनं कर्म कृतं पुरस्तादनिर्विष्टं पापकं धार्तराष्ट्रैः ॥६॥

6. ityabravīdarjuno yotsyamāno; gāṇḍīvadhanvā lohitapadmanetraḥ ,
na cedrājyaṁ muñcati dhārtarāṣṭro; yudhiṣṭhirasyājamīḍhasya rājñaḥ ,
asti nūnaṁ karma kṛtaṁ purastā;danirviṣṭaṁ pāpakaṁ dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ.
na cedrājyaṁ muñcati dhārtarāṣṭro; yudhiṣṭhirasyājamīḍhasya rājñaḥ ,

iti abravīt arjunaḥ yotsyamānaḥ gāṇḍīvadhanvā
lohitapadmanetraḥ na cet rājyam muñcati dhārtarāṣṭraḥ
yudhiṣṭhirasya ajamīḍhasya rājñaḥ asti nūnam
karma kṛtam purastāt anirviṣṭam pāpakam dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ

Thus spoke Arjuna, who was prepared to fight, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow and one with lotus-red eyes: 'If the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra does not relinquish the kingdom belonging to King Yudhishthira (of the Ajamiḍha lineage), then certainly a sinful action (karma) done previously by the Dhārtarāṣṭras remains unexpiated.'
येषां युद्धं भीमसेनार्जुनाभ्यां तथाश्विभ्यां वासुदेवेन चैव ।
शैनेयेन ध्रुवमात्तायुधेन धृष्टद्युम्नेनाथ शिखण्डिना च ।
युधिष्ठिरेणेन्द्रकल्पेन चैव योऽपध्यानान्निर्दहेद्गां दिवं च ॥७॥

7. yeṣāṁ yuddhaṁ bhīmasenārjunābhyāṁ; tathāśvibhyāṁ vāsudevena caiva ,
śaineyena dhruvamāttāyudhena; dhṛṣṭadyumnenātha śikhaṇḍinā ca ,
yudhiṣṭhireṇendrakalpena caiva; yo'padhyānānnirdahedgāṁ divaṁ ca.
śaineyena dhruvamāttāyudhena; dhṛṣṭadyumnenātha śikhaṇḍinā ca ,
yudhiṣṭhireṇendrakalpena caiva; yo'padhyānānnirdahedgāṁ divaṁ ca.

yeṣām yuddham bhīmasenārjunābhyām tathā aśvibhyām
vāsudevena ca eva śaineyena dhruvam āttāyudhena
dhṛṣṭadyumnena atha śikhaṇḍinā ca yudhiṣṭhireṇa
indrakalpena ca eva yaḥ apadhyānāt nirdahēt gām divam ca
vāsudevena ca eva śaineyena dhruvam āttāyudhena
dhṛṣṭadyumnena atha śikhaṇḍinā ca yudhiṣṭhireṇa
indrakalpena ca eva yaḥ apadhyānāt nirdahēt gām divam ca

This is the battle of those (Pandavas) where Bhimasena and Arjuna, the two Aśvins, Vāsudeva (Krishna), Satyaki (the son of Śini) who has certainly taken up arms, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍin, and indeed Yudhishthira, who is like Indra, fight. Who (among the enemies), through malevolent intentions, would then be able to incinerate the earth and heaven (by opposing them)?
तैश्चेद्युद्धं मन्यते धार्तराष्ट्रो निर्वृत्तोऽर्थः सकलः पाण्डवानाम् ।
मा तत्कार्षीः पाण्डवार्थाय हेतोरुपैहि युद्धं यदि मन्यसे त्वम् ॥८॥
मा तत्कार्षीः पाण्डवार्थाय हेतोरुपैहि युद्धं यदि मन्यसे त्वम् ॥८॥
8. taiścedyuddhaṁ manyate dhārtarāṣṭro; nirvṛtto'rthaḥ sakalaḥ pāṇḍavānām ,
mā tatkārṣīḥ pāṇḍavārthāya heto;rupaihi yuddhaṁ yadi manyase tvam.
mā tatkārṣīḥ pāṇḍavārthāya heto;rupaihi yuddhaṁ yadi manyase tvam.
8.
taiḥ cet yuddham manyate dhārtarāṣṭraḥ
nirvṛttaḥ arthaḥ sakalaḥ pāṇḍavānām
mā tat kārṣīḥ pāṇḍavārthāya
hetoḥ upaihi yuddham yadi manyase tvam
nirvṛttaḥ arthaḥ sakalaḥ pāṇḍavānām
mā tat kārṣīḥ pāṇḍavārthāya
hetoḥ upaihi yuddham yadi manyase tvam

If Dhṛtarāṣṭra anticipates a war with them, then the entire purpose of the Pāṇḍavas is accomplished. Do not undertake that (war) for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas. Instead, engage in battle if you yourself consider it proper.
यां तां वने दुःखशय्यामुवास प्रव्राजितः पाण्डवो धर्मचारी ।
आशिष्यते दुःखतरामनर्थामन्त्यां शय्यां धार्तराष्ट्रः परासुः ॥९॥

9. yāṁ tāṁ vane duḥkhaśayyāmuvāsa; pravrājitaḥ pāṇḍavo dharmacārī ,
āśiṣyate duḥkhatarāmanarthā;mantyāṁ śayyāṁ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ parāsuḥ.
āśiṣyate duḥkhatarāmanarthā;mantyāṁ śayyāṁ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ parāsuḥ.

yām tām vane duḥkhaśayyām uvāsa
pravrājitaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ dharmacārī
āśiṣyate duḥkhatarām anarthām
antyām śayyām dhārtarāṣṭraḥ parāsuḥ
pravrājitaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ dharmacārī
āśiṣyate duḥkhatarām anarthām
antyām śayyām dhārtarāṣṭraḥ parāsuḥ

The exiled Pāṇḍava, who faithfully lived in the forest observing his intrinsic nature (dharma), dwelled upon a bed of suffering. Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having lost his life, will embrace an even more painful and futile final resting place (śayyā).
ह्रिया ज्ञानेन तपसा दमेन क्रोधेनाथो धर्मगुप्त्या धनेन ।
अन्यायवृत्तः कुरुपाण्डवेयानध्यातिष्ठद्धार्तराष्ट्रो दुरात्मा ॥१०॥

10. hriyā jñānena tapasā damena; krodhenātho dharmaguptyā dhanena ,
anyāyavṛttaḥ kurupāṇḍaveyā;nadhyātiṣṭhaddhārtarāṣṭro durātmā.
anyāyavṛttaḥ kurupāṇḍaveyā;nadhyātiṣṭhaddhārtarāṣṭro durātmā.

hriyā jñānena tapasā damena
krodhena atho dharmaguptyā dhanena
an'yāyavṛttaḥ kurupāṇḍaveyān
adhyātiṣṭhat dhārtarāṣṭraḥ durātmā
krodhena atho dharmaguptyā dhanena
an'yāyavṛttaḥ kurupāṇḍaveyān
adhyātiṣṭhat dhārtarāṣṭraḥ durātmā
10.
Ignoring modesty, knowledge, asceticism (tapas), and self-restraint (dama), but instead employing anger, a false pretense of protecting natural law (dharma), and wealth, the evil-minded Dhṛtarāṣṭra, behaving unjustly, oppressed the Kuru and Pāṇḍava princes.
मायोपधः प्रणिधानार्जवाभ्यां तपोदमाभ्यां धर्मगुप्त्या बलेन ।
सत्यं ब्रुवन्प्रीतियुक्त्यानृतेन तितिक्षमाणः क्लिश्यमानोऽतिवेलम् ॥११॥

11. māyopadhaḥ praṇidhānārjavābhyāṁ; tapodamābhyāṁ dharmaguptyā balena ,
satyaṁ bruvanprītiyuktyānṛtena; titikṣamāṇaḥ kliśyamāno'tivelam.

māyopadhaḥ praṇidhānārjavābhyām
tapodamābhyām dharmaguptyā balena
satyam bruvan prītiyuktyā anṛtena

11.
Characterized by deceit, he (acts) with (a pretense of) application and straightforwardness, asceticism (tapas) and self-restraint (dama), protection of natural law (dharma) and strength. Speaking truth, yet also with affection and untruth, he (appears) to be enduring and excessively distressed.
यदा ज्येष्ठः पाण्डवः संशितात्मा क्रोधं यत्तं वर्षपूगान्सुघोरम् ।
अवस्रष्टा कुरुषूद्वृत्तचेतास्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥१२॥

12. yadā jyeṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ saṁśitātmā; krodhaṁ yattaṁ varṣapūgānsughoram ,
avasraṣṭā kuruṣūdvṛttacetā;stadā yuddhaṁ dhārtarāṣṭro'nvatapsyat.

12.
yadā jyeṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ saṃśitātmā
krodhaṃ yattaṃ varṣapūgān sughoram
avasraṣṭā kuruṣu udvṛttacetāḥ tadā
yuddhaṃ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ anvatapsyat
krodhaṃ yattaṃ varṣapūgān sughoram
avasraṣṭā kuruṣu udvṛttacetāḥ tadā
yuddhaṃ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ anvatapsyat
12.
When the eldest Pāṇḍava, Yudhiṣṭhira, having a resolute spirit (ātman), his mind roused, unleashed upon the Kurus the dreadful anger (krodha) he had suppressed for many years, then Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana) would repent the war.
कृष्णवर्त्मेव ज्वलितः समिद्धो यथा दहेत्कक्षमग्निर्निदाघे ।
एवं दग्धा धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सेनां युधिष्ठिरः क्रोधदीप्तोऽनुवीक्ष्य ॥१३॥

13. kṛṣṇavartmeva jvalitaḥ samiddho; yathā dahetkakṣamagnirnidāghe ,
evaṁ dagdhā dhārtarāṣṭrasya senāṁ; yudhiṣṭhiraḥ krodhadīpto'nuvīkṣya.
evaṁ dagdhā dhārtarāṣṭrasya senāṁ; yudhiṣṭhiraḥ krodhadīpto'nuvīkṣya.
13.
kṛṣṇavartmā iva jvalitaḥ samiddhaḥ
yathā dahet kakṣam agniḥ nidāghe
evaṃ dagdhā dhārtarāṣṭrasya senāṃ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ krodhadīptaḥ anuvīkṣya
yathā dahet kakṣam agniḥ nidāghe
evaṃ dagdhā dhārtarāṣṭrasya senāṃ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ krodhadīptaḥ anuvīkṣya
13.
Just as blazing, well-kindled fire (kṛṣṇavartman) consumes dry grass in summer, so Yudhiṣṭhira, ablaze with anger (krodha), observed Dhṛtarāṣṭra's army as if it were already consumed.
यदा द्रष्टा भीमसेनं रणस्थं गदाहस्तं क्रोधविषं वमन्तम् ।
दुर्मर्षणं पाण्डवं भीमवेगं तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥१४॥
दुर्मर्षणं पाण्डवं भीमवेगं तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥१४॥
14. yadā draṣṭā bhīmasenaṁ raṇasthaṁ; gadāhastaṁ krodhaviṣaṁ vamantam ,
durmarṣaṇaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ bhīmavegaṁ; tadā yuddhaṁ dhārtarāṣṭro'nvatapsyat.
durmarṣaṇaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ bhīmavegaṁ; tadā yuddhaṁ dhārtarāṣṭro'nvatapsyat.
14.
yadā draṣṭā bhīmasenaṃ raṇasthaṃ
gadāhastaṃ krodhaviṣaṃ vamantam
durmarṣaṇaṃ pāṇḍavaṃ bhīmavegaṃ tadā
yuddhaṃ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ anvatapsyat
gadāhastaṃ krodhaviṣaṃ vamantam
durmarṣaṇaṃ pāṇḍavaṃ bhīmavegaṃ tadā
yuddhaṃ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ anvatapsyat
14.
When he saw Bhīmasena standing on the battlefield, holding a mace, spewing the poison of anger (krodha), that irresistible Pāṇḍava of terrible might, then Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana) would repent the war.
महासिंहो गाव इव प्रविश्य गदापाणिर्धार्तराष्ट्रानुपेत्य ।
यदा भीमो भीमरूपो निहन्ता तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥१५॥
यदा भीमो भीमरूपो निहन्ता तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥१५॥
15. mahāsiṁho gāva iva praviśya; gadāpāṇirdhārtarāṣṭrānupetya ,
yadā bhīmo bhīmarūpo nihantā; tadā yuddhaṁ dhārtarāṣṭro'nvatapsyat.
yadā bhīmo bhīmarūpo nihantā; tadā yuddhaṁ dhārtarāṣṭro'nvatapsyat.
15.
mahāsiṃhaḥ gāva iva praviśya
gadāpāṇiḥ dhārtarāṣṭrān upetya yadā
bhīmaḥ bhīmarūpaḥ nihantā tadā
yuddhaṃ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ anvatapsyat
gadāpāṇiḥ dhārtarāṣṭrān upetya yadā
bhīmaḥ bhīmarūpaḥ nihantā tadā
yuddhaṃ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ anvatapsyat
15.
When Bhīma, mace in hand, having approached the Dhārtarāṣṭras (sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra) like a great lion entering a herd of cows, and having a terrible form, became a slayer, then Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana) would repent the war.
महाभये वीतभयः कृतास्त्रः समागमे शत्रुबलावमर्दी ।
सकृद्रथेन प्रतियाद्रथौघान्पदातिसंघान्गदयाभिनिघ्नन् ॥१६॥

In a situation of great danger, he is fearless, skilled in weaponry, and a destroyer of enemy forces in battle. Single-handedly, with his chariot, he would confront hordes of chariots and, with his mace, strike down throngs of foot soldiers.

Crushing countless armies forcefully, when the hero would shatter the army of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, cutting down a forest like with an axe, then Dhṛtarāṣṭra would repent the war.
तृणप्रायं ज्वलनेनेव दग्धं ग्रामं यथा धार्तराष्ट्रः समीक्ष्य ।
पक्वं सस्यं वैद्युतेनेव दग्धं परासिक्तं विपुलं स्वं बलौघम् ॥१८॥

...with its chief heroes slain, disarrayed, afflicted by fear, largely turned away, with its warriors lacking courage, and utterly consumed by the fiery splendor of Bhīmasena's weapons - then Dhṛtarāṣṭra would repent the war.

When Nakula, the wondrous warrior, draws out hundreds of arrows from his quiver with his right hand, and when he is the foremost and most attentive among charioteers, then Dhritarashtra's son will regret the war.

When Nakula, who was accustomed to comfort, had to lie for a long time on a bed of hardship in the forests, breathing heavily and fiercely like an enraged poisonous snake, then Dhritarashtra's son will regret the war.

When Dhritarashtra's son sees those heroes, who have dedicated their lives (ātman) to the king's battle and have been commanded by Dharmaraja (Yudhiṣṭhira), attacking his army with their shining chariots, he will regret it afterwards.
शिशून्कृतास्त्रानशिशुप्रकाशान्यदा द्रष्टा कौरवः पञ्च शूरान् ।
त्यक्त्वा प्राणान्केकयानाद्रवन्तस्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥२३॥

When the Kaurava (Duryodhana) sees the five heroes - who are young, yet skilled in weaponry and do not appear like mere children - and also the Kekayas, who rush forward, having abandoned their lives, then Dhritarashtra's son will regret the war.
यदा गतोद्वाहमकूजनाक्षं सुवर्णतारं रथमाततायी ।
दान्तैर्युक्तं सहदेवोऽधिरूढः शिरांसि राज्ञां क्षेप्स्यते मार्गणौघैः ॥२४॥

When Sahadeva, the attacker, ascends his chariot - one whose yoke has been removed, whose axle does not creak, adorned with gold and silver, and yoked with well-trained horses - he will then hurl the heads of kings with showers of arrows.
महाभये संप्रवृत्ते रथस्थं विवर्तमानं समरे कृतास्त्रम् ।
सर्वां दिशं संपतन्तं समीक्ष्य तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥२५॥

When intense fear has arisen, and seeing [an enemy warrior] standing in his chariot, maneuvering skillfully in battle, adept in weaponry, and attacking in all directions, then the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra will regret the war.

Sahadeva, who is fearless (hrīniṣedha), skillful, a speaker of truth, of great strength, and endowed with every aspect of (natural law) (dharma), will assail the son of Gandhārī in the tumult of battle. He is swift-acting, a hurler of men, and truly energetic.
यदा द्रष्टा द्रौपदेयान्महेषूञ्शूरान्कृतास्त्रान्रथयुद्धकोविदान् ।
आशीविषान्घोरविषानिवायतस्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥२७॥

When the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra sees the sons of Draupadī - great archers, heroes, skilled in weaponry, experts in chariot warfare, like venomous snakes of terrible poison, and ready to strike (āyata) - then he will regret the war.
यदाभिमन्युः परवीरघाती शरैः परान्मेघ इवाभिवर्षन् ।
विगाहिता कृष्णसमः कृतास्त्रस्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥२८॥

When Abhimanyu, the slayer of enemy heroes, showering arrows upon his foes like a cloud, skilled in weaponry and equal to Kṛṣṇa, would plunge into battle, then Dhṛtarāṣṭra would lament the war.
यदा द्रष्टा बालमबालवीर्यं द्विषच्चमूं मृत्युमिवापतन्तम् ।
सौभद्रमिन्द्रप्रतिमं कृतास्त्रं तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥२९॥

When he (Dhṛtarāṣṭra or Duryodhana) would see the young (Abhimanyu), possessing immense valor, attacking the enemy army like death itself, that son of Subhadrā (Abhimanyu), comparable to Indra and skilled in weaponry, then Dhṛtarāṣṭra would lament the war.
प्रभद्रकाः शीघ्रतरा युवानो विशारदाः सिंहसमानवीर्याः ।
यदा क्षेप्तारो धार्तराष्ट्रान्ससैन्यांस्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥३०॥

When the excellent, very swift, young, skillful warriors, whose valor is equal to that of lions, would drive away Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons with their armies, then Dhṛtarāṣṭra would lament the war.
वृद्धौ विराटद्रुपदौ महारथौ पृथक्चमूभ्यामभिवर्तमानौ ।
यदा द्रष्टारौ धार्तराष्ट्रान्ससैन्यांस्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥३१॥

When the two elderly great charioteers, Virāṭa and Drupada, advancing with their separate armies, would see Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons along with their forces, then Dhṛtarāṣṭra would lament the war.
यदा कृतास्त्रो द्रुपदः प्रचिन्वञ्शिरांसि यूनां समरे रथस्थः ।
क्रुद्धः शरैश्छेत्स्यति चापमुक्तैस्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥३२॥

When Drupada, skilled in weapons and standing on his chariot in battle, furiously cuts off the heads of young men with arrows released from his bow, then the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra will regret the war.
यदा विराटः परवीरघाती मर्मान्तरे शत्रुचमूं प्रवेष्टा ।

When Virāṭa, the slayer of enemy heroes, will penetrate deep into the enemy army along with the ferocious Matsyas, then the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra will regret the war.

When Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son sees Virāṭa's eldest son, that ferocious chariot-warrior who is armored and fighting at the forefront for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas, then he will regret the war.
रणे हते कौरवाणां प्रवीरे शिखण्डिना सत्तमे शंतनूजे ।
न जातु नः शत्रवो धारयेयुरसंशयं सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ॥३५॥

When Bhīṣma, the greatest hero among the Kauravas and the most excellent son of Śaṃtanu, is killed in battle by Śikhaṇḍin, our enemies will certainly never be able to resist us. I declare this truth without a doubt.
यदा शिखण्डी रथिनः प्रचिन्वन्भीष्मं रथेनाभियाता वरूथी ।
दिव्यैर्हयैरवमृद्नन्रथौघांस्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥३६॥

36.
When Śikhaṇḍī, a valiant charioteer, would seek out charioteers and Bhīṣma, and attack with his chariot, crushing throngs of chariots with his divine horses, then the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra would regret the war.
यदा द्रष्टा सृञ्जयानामनीके धृष्टद्युम्नं प्रमुखे रोचमानम् ।
अस्त्रं यस्मै गुह्यमुवाच धीमान्द्रोणस्तदा तप्स्यति धार्तराष्ट्रः ॥३७॥

37.
When the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra sees Dhṛṣṭadyumna, splendidly conspicuous at the head of the Sañjaya army – to whom the intelligent Droṇa taught a secret weapon – then he will regret.
यदा स सेनापतिरप्रमेयः पराभवन्निषुभिर्धार्तराष्ट्रान् ।
द्रोणं रणे शत्रुसहोऽभियाता तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥३८॥

38.
When that immeasurable commander (Dhṛṣṭadyumna), defeating the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra with his arrows, a mighty conqueror of foes, attacks Droṇa in battle, then the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra would regret the war.
ह्रीमान्मनीषी बलवान्मनस्वी स लक्ष्मीवान्सोमकानां प्रबर्हः ।
न जातु तं शत्रवोऽन्ये सहेरन्येषां स स्यादग्रणीर्वृष्णिसिंहः ॥३९॥

39. hrīmānmanīṣī balavānmanasvī; sa lakṣmīvānsomakānāṁ prabarhaḥ ,

lakṣmīvān somakānām prabarhaḥ na

He (Arjuna) is modest, discerning, powerful, and resolute; he is glorious and the foremost among the Somakas. Other enemies would certainly never endure him when the lion among the Vṛṣṇis (Kṛṣṇa) is their leader.
ब्रूयाच्च मा प्रवृणीष्वेति लोके युद्धेऽद्वितीयं सचिवं रथस्थम् ।
शिनेर्नप्तारं प्रवृणीम सात्यकिं महाबलं वीतभयं कृतास्त्रम् ॥४०॥

40. brūyācca mā pravṛṇīṣveti loke; yuddhe'dvitīyaṁ sacivaṁ rathastham ,

40.
One might say, 'Choose me as your unparalleled companion, who rides on your chariot, both in this world and in battle.' (However), we choose Sātyaki, the grandson of Śini, who is exceedingly powerful, fearless, and skilled in weaponry.
यदा शिनीनामधिपो मयोक्तः शरैः परान्मेघ इव प्रवर्षन् ।
प्रच्छादयिष्यञ्शरजालेन योधांस्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥४१॥

41.
When Sātyaki, the chief of the Śinis (whom I have mentioned), showers arrows upon his enemies like a cloud, intending to overwhelm the warriors with a dense volley of arrows, then Duryodhana would surely regret this war.
यदा धृतिं कुरुते योत्स्यमानः स दीर्घबाहुर्दृढधन्वा महात्मा ।
सिंहस्येव गन्धमाघ्राय गावः संवेष्टन्ते शत्रवोऽस्माद्यथाग्नेः ॥४२॥

yadā dhṛtim kurute yotsyamānaḥ saḥ
dīrghabāhuḥ dṛḍhadhanvā mahātmā |

42.
When that great-souled (mahā-ātman) warrior, who has long arms and a strong bow, prepares for battle with firm resolve, his enemies recoil from him just as cows flee upon sensing a lion's scent, or as people would keep their distance from fire.
स दीर्घबाहुर्दृढधन्वा महात्मा भिन्द्याद्गिरीन्संहरेत्सर्वलोकान् ।
अस्त्रे कृती निपुणः क्षिप्रहस्तो दिवि स्थितः सूर्य इवाभिभाति ॥४३॥

43.
That long-armed, strong-bowed, great-souled (mahā-ātman) warrior could shatter mountains and devastate all worlds. He is proficient and expert in weaponry, swift-handed, and shines brightly like the sun stationed in the sky.
चित्रः सूक्ष्मः सुकृतो यादवस्य अस्त्रे योगो वृष्णिसिंहस्य भूयान् ।
यथाविधं योगमाहुः प्रशस्तं सर्वैर्गुणैः सात्यकिस्तैरुपेतः ॥४४॥

44. citraḥ sūkṣmaḥ sukṛto yādavasya; astre yogo vṛṣṇisiṁhasya bhūyān ,

citraḥ sūkṣmaḥ sukṛtaḥ yādavasya
astre yogaḥ vṛṣṇisiṃhasya bhūyān

sarvaiḥ guṇaiḥ sātyakiḥ taiḥ upetaḥ
astre yogaḥ vṛṣṇisiṃhasya bhūyān

44.
May the splendid, keen, and accomplished mastery (yoga) in weaponry of the Yadava, the lion among the Vṛṣṇis, be abundant. Satyakit is indeed endowed with all those qualities by which such mastery (yoga) is declared excellent.
हिरण्मयं श्वेतहयैश्चतुर्भिर्यदा युक्तं स्यन्दनं माधवस्य ।
द्रष्टा युद्धे सात्यकेर्वै सुयोधनस्तदा तप्स्यत्यकृतात्मा स मन्दः ॥४५॥

45.
When Suyodhana, that foolish man with an unrefined mind (akṛtātmā), truly sees Mādhava's golden chariot, yoked with four white horses, engaged in Satyakit's battle, then he will grieve.
यदा रथं हेममणिप्रकाशं श्वेताश्वयुक्तं वानरकेतुमुग्रम् ।
द्रष्टा रणे संयतं केशवेन तदा तप्स्यत्यकृतात्मा स मन्दः ॥४६॥

46.
When Suyodhana, that foolish man with an unrefined mind (akṛtātmā), sees the fierce chariot, shining like gold and gems, yoked with white horses, and bearing a monkey banner, controlled by Keśava (Krishna) in battle, then he will grieve.
यदा मौर्व्यास्तलनिष्पेषमुग्रं महाशब्दं वज्रनिष्पेषतुल्यम् ।
विधूयमानस्य महारणे मया गाण्डीवस्य श्रोष्यति मन्दबुद्धिः ॥४७॥

47. yadā maurvyāstalaniṣpeṣamugraṁ; mahāśabdaṁ vajraniṣpeṣatulyam ,

When the dull-witted one (mandabuddhiḥ), in the great battle, hears the fierce and mighty sound of the Gaṇḍīva bow - a sound like the crash of a thunderbolt, produced by the striking of the bowstring by the palm - as it is wielded by me.
तदा मूढो धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रस्तप्ता युद्धे दुर्मतिर्दुःसहायः ।
दृष्ट्वा सैन्यं बाणवर्षान्धकारं प्रभज्यन्तं गोकुलवद्रणाग्रे ॥४८॥

48. tadā mūḍho dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putra;staptā yuddhe durmatirduḥsahāyaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā sainyaṁ bāṇavarṣāndhakāraṁ; prabhajyantaṁ gokulavadraṇāgre.

Then, the foolish, misguided, and helpless son of Dhritarashtra, distressed in battle, having seen his army being routed like a herd of cows at the forefront of the fight, obscured by a rain of arrows...
बलाहकादुच्चरन्तीव विद्युत्सहस्रघ्नी द्विषतां संगमेषु ।
अस्थिच्छिदो मर्मभिदो वमेच्छरांस्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥४९॥

49.
As if lightning, slaying thousands, erupting from a thundercloud, he (Arjuna) would unleash bone-splitting and vital-point-piercing arrows upon encounters with enemies. Then, the son of Dhritarashtra would regret the war.

When he (Duryodhana) would see the multitudes of sharp-tipped arrows, released from the Gaṇḍīva bow, falling from the bowstring's opening and destroying elephants, horses, and armored warriors, then the son of Dhritarashtra would regret the war.
यदा मन्दः परबाणान्विमुक्तान्ममेषुभिर्ह्रियमाणान्प्रतीपम् ।

When the dull-witted (Duryodhana) would perceive his enemies' released arrows being repelled in opposition by my (Arjuna's) arrows and being cut sideways by crescent-shaped arrows, then the son of Dhritarashtra would regret the war.
यदा विपाठा मद्भुजविप्रमुक्ता द्विजाः फलानीव महीरुहाग्रात् ।
प्रच्छेत्तार उत्तमाङ्गानि यूनां तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥५२॥

When unfletched arrows, released from my arms and severing the heads of young men, cause them to fall like birds and fruits from the tops of trees, then the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra will regret this war.
यदा द्रष्टा पततः स्यन्दनेभ्यो महागजेभ्योऽश्वगतांश्च योधान् ।

When he sees warriors falling from chariots, great elephants, and from horseback, struck down by arrows and indeed fallen on the battlefield, then the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra will regret this war.

54.
Like Death, with an open mouth and drawn bow, I will rout masses of foot-soldiers and chariots from all sides with flaming showers of arrows. Then the foolish one will regret.
सर्वा दिशः संपतता रथेन रजोध्वस्तं गाण्डिवेनापकृत्तम् ।
यदा द्रष्टा स्वबलं संप्रमूढं तदा पश्चात्तप्स्यति मन्दबुद्धिः ॥५५॥

When, due to my speeding chariot moving in all directions, he sees his own army covered with dust and severed by the Gāṇḍīva (bow), utterly bewildered, then the foolish one will regret it afterwards.
कांदिग्भूतं छिन्नगात्रं विसंज्ञं दुर्योधनो द्रक्ष्यति सर्वसैन्यम् ।
हताश्ववीराग्र्यनरेन्द्रनागं पिपासितं श्रान्तपत्रं भयार्तम् ॥५६॥

56.
Duryodhana will see his entire army utterly bewildered, with limbs severed, senseless, with its horses, warriors, chief kings, and elephants slain, thirsty, exhausted, and tormented by fear.
आर्तस्वरं हन्यमानं हतं च विकीर्णकेशास्थिकपालसंघम् ।
प्रजापतेः कर्म यथार्धनिष्ठितं तदा दृष्ट्वा तप्स्यते मन्दबुद्धिः ॥५७॥

57.
He will see his army crying out in distress, being killed and already slain, with scattered masses of hair, bones, and skulls, like a work left half-finished by Prajapati (the creator deity). Having seen that, the dull-witted one (Duryodhana) will then grieve.
यदा रथे गाण्डिवं वासुदेवं दिव्यं शङ्खं पाञ्चजन्यं हयांश्च ।
तूणावक्षय्यौ देवदत्तं च मां च द्रष्टा युद्धे धार्तराष्ट्रः समेतान् ॥५८॥

When Dhritarashtra's son (Duryodhana) sees me (Arjuna) in the chariot, along with the Gaṇḍīva (bow), Vasudeva (Krishna), the divine conch Pāñcajanya, the horses, the two inexhaustible quivers, and Devadatta (Bhīma's conch), all assembled in battle...
उद्वर्तयन्दस्युसंघान्समेतान्प्रवर्तयन्युगमन्यद्युगान्ते ।
यदा धक्ष्याम्यग्निवत्कौरवेयांस्तदा तप्ता धृतराष्ट्रः सपुत्रः ॥५९॥

59.
When I (Arjuna), uprooting these assembled hordes of villains and inaugurating another epoch (yuga) at the end of this age (yuga), burn the Kauravas like fire, then Dhritarashtra, along with his sons, will be tormented.
सहभ्राता सहपुत्रः ससैन्यो भ्रष्टैश्वर्यः क्रोधवशोऽल्पचेताः ।
दर्पस्यान्ते विहिते वेपमानः पश्चान्मन्दस्तप्स्यति धार्तराष्ट्रः ॥६०॥

60.
The son of Dhritarashtra (Dhārtarāṣṭra), accompanied by his brothers and sons, with his army, having lost his sovereignty, overcome by anger, and of small intelligence, will later regret his actions, trembling when his arrogance (darpa) is finally subdued.
पूर्वाह्णे मां कृतजप्यं कदाचिद्विप्रः प्रोवाचोदकान्ते मनोज्ञम् ।
कर्तव्यं ते दुष्करं कर्म पार्थ योद्धव्यं ते शत्रुभिः सव्यसाचिन् ॥६१॥

One morning, a Brahmin (vipra), having completed his daily prayers, once spoke to me near the water, saying something agreeable: 'O son of Pritha (Pārtha), you must accomplish a difficult task (karma); you, O Savyasachin, must fight against your enemies.'
इन्द्रो वा ते हरिवान्वज्रहस्तः पुरस्ताद्यातु समरेऽरीन्विनिघ्नन् ।
सुग्रीवयुक्तेन रथेन वा ते पश्चात्कृष्णो रक्षतु वासुदेवः ॥६२॥

62.
May Indra, the possessor of steeds (Harivān) and wielder of the thunderbolt (Vajrahasta), go forth before you in battle, slaying your enemies; or may Krishna (Kṛṣṇa) Vasudeva protect you from behind with a chariot yoked with horses named Sugrīva.
वव्रे चाहं वज्रहस्तान्महेन्द्रादस्मिन्युद्धे वासुदेवं सहायम् ।
स मे लब्धो दस्युवधाय कृष्णो मन्ये चैतद्विहितं दैवतैर्मे ॥६३॥

63.
I requested from Mahendra (Mahendra), the thunderbolt-wielder, Vasudeva (Vāsudeva) as a helper in this battle. He, Krishna (Kṛṣṇa), has been obtained by me for the destruction of evildoers, and I believe this has been ordained by the deities for my benefit.
अयुध्यमानो मनसापि यस्य जयं कृष्णः पुरुषस्याभिनन्देत् ।
ध्रुवं सर्वान्सोऽभ्यतीयादमित्रान्सेन्द्रान्देवान्मानुषे नास्ति चिन्ता ॥६४॥

64. ayudhyamāno manasāpi yasya; jayaṁ kṛṣṇaḥ puruṣasyābhinandet ,

a-yudhyamānaḥ manasā api yasya jayam
kṛṣṇaḥ puruṣasya abhinandet
dhruvam sarvān saḥ abhyatīyāt amitrān
sa-indrān devān mānuṣe na asti cintā
kṛṣṇaḥ puruṣasya abhinandet
dhruvam sarvān saḥ abhyatīyāt amitrān
sa-indrān devān mānuṣe na asti cintā
64.
If Kṛṣṇa were to approve of the victory of a person (puruṣa) even if that person did not fight, then that individual would surely overcome all enemies, even the gods including Indra. There is no doubt about human affairs.
स बाहुभ्यां सागरमुत्तितीर्षेन्महोदधिं सलिलस्याप्रमेयम् ।
तेजस्विनं कृष्णमत्यन्तशूरं युद्धेन यो वासुदेवं जिगीषेत् ॥६५॥

saḥ bāhubhyām sāgaram uttītīrṣet
mahā-udadhim salilasya aprameyam

65.
One who wishes to conquer Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) in battle, that glorious and exceedingly brave Kṛṣṇa, would be like someone trying to swim across the vast, immeasurable ocean of water with only his two arms.
गिरिं य इच्छेत तलेन भेत्तुं शिलोच्चयं श्वेतमतिप्रमाणम् ।
तस्यैव पाणिः सनखो विशीर्येन्न चापि किंचित्स गिरेस्तु कुर्यात् ॥६६॥

66. giriṁ ya iccheta talena bhettuṁ; śiloccayaṁ śvetamatipramāṇam ,

girim yaḥ icchet talena bhettum
śiloccayam śvetam ati-pramāṇam tasya
eva pāṇiḥ sa-nakhaḥ viśīryet na
ca api kiṃcit saḥ gireḥ tu kuryāt

66.
If someone were to wish to break an enormous, white rock-mountain with the palm of his hand, his own hand, including its nails, would shatter, and he would not accomplish anything at all against the mountain.
अग्निं समिद्धं शमयेद्भुजाभ्यां चन्द्रं च सूर्यं च निवारयेत ।
हरेद्देवानाममृतं प्रसह्य युद्धेन यो वासुदेवं जिगीषेत् ॥६७॥

67.
Anyone who wishes to conquer Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) in battle would be like one who could extinguish a blazing fire with his two arms, stop both the moon and the sun, and forcibly carry away the nectar (amṛta) of the gods.
यो रुक्मिणीमेकरथेन भोज्यामुत्साद्य राज्ञां विषयं प्रसह्य ।
उवाह भार्यां यशसा ज्वलन्तीं यस्यां जज्ञे रौक्मिणेयो महात्मा ॥६८॥

68.
He who, having forcibly overthrown the dominion of kings, carried off Rukmiṇī, the princess of the Bhojas, in a single chariot. He took her as his wife, who was radiant with glory, and from her was born the great-souled Pradyumna (Raukmiṇeya).
अयं गान्धारांस्तरसा संप्रमथ्य जित्वा पुत्रान्नग्नजितः समग्रान् ।
बद्धं मुमोच विनदन्तं प्रसह्य सुदर्शनीयं देवतानां ललामम् ॥६९॥

This one, having forcefully crushed the Gandhāras and conquered all the sons of Nagnajit, released by force the very beautiful one, who was an ornament (lalāmam) to the gods and was bound and roaring.
अयं कवाटे निजघान पाण्ड्यं तथा कलिङ्गान्दन्तकूरे ममर्द ।

70.
This one struck down the Pāṇḍya king at Kavāṭa and similarly crushed the Kaliṅgas at Dantakūra. By him, the city of Vārāṇasī was burned and remained without a protector for many years.

Ekalavya, the king of the Niṣādas, whom others considered invincible (ajeyam) in battle, now lies dead, slain by Kṛṣṇa, just as the demon Jambha struck down a mountain with force.
तथोग्रसेनस्य सुतं प्रदुष्टं वृष्ण्यन्धकानां मध्यगां तपन्तम् ।
अपातयद्बलदेवद्वितीयो हत्वा ददौ चोग्रसेनाय राज्यम् ॥७२॥

72.
Similarly, Krishna, accompanied by Baladeva, struck down Ugrasena's extremely wicked son, who was tormenting the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas from within their midst. After killing him, he restored the kingdom to Ugrasena.
अयं सौभं योधयामास खस्थं विभीषणं मायया शाल्वराजम् ।
सौभद्वारि प्रत्यगृह्णाच्छतघ्नीं दोर्भ्यां क एनं विषहेत मर्त्यः ॥७३॥

73.
This one (Krishna) fought the sky-dwelling city of Saubha and the formidable King Śālva, employing his power of illusion (māyā). At the gate of Saubha, he caught the Śataghnī weapon with his two arms. What mortal could possibly withstand him?
प्राग्ज्योतिषं नाम बभूव दुर्गं पुरं घोरमसुराणामसह्यम् ।

74.
There existed a fearsome and impregnable fortress-city of the asuras (demons) named Prāgjyotiṣa. In that place, the extremely powerful Naraka, also known as Bhauma (son of Earth), stole two beautiful jewel earrings from Aditi.
न तं देवाः सह शक्रेण सेहिरे समागता आहरणाय भीताः ।
दृष्ट्वा च ते विक्रमं केशवस्य बलं तथैवास्त्रमवारणीयम् ॥७५॥

75.
The assembled gods, including Śakra (Indra), were fearful and unable to overcome him (Naraka) to retrieve (the jewel earrings). However, having witnessed Keśava's valor, strength, and irresistible weapon, they realized his capability.
जानन्तोऽस्य प्रकृतिं केशवस्य न्ययोजयन्दस्युवधाय कृष्णम् ।
स तत्कर्म प्रतिशुश्राव दुष्करमैश्वर्यवान्सिद्धिषु वासुदेवः ॥७६॥

76.
Knowing his intrinsic nature (prakṛti), they assigned Kṛṣṇa, the controller of the senses (keśava), to destroy the rogues. That Vāsudeva, endowed with divine power (aiśvarya) in his accomplishments (siddhi), promised to undertake that difficult task.
निर्मोचने षट्सहस्राणि हत्वा संछिद्य पाशान्सहसा क्षुरान्तान् ।
मुरं हत्वा विनिहत्यौघराक्षसं निर्मोचनं चापि जगाम वीरः ॥७७॥

77. nirmocane ṣaṭsahasrāṇi hatvā; saṁchidya pāśānsahasā kṣurāntān ,

77.
Having killed six thousand (demons) in Nirmochana, and having swiftly cut the razor-sharp bonds, the hero (Kṛṣṇa), having killed Murā and having slain Augharākṣasa, also went to Nirmochana.
तत्रैव तेनास्य बभूव युद्धं महाबलेनातिबलस्य विष्णोः ।
शेते स कृष्णेन हतः परासुर्वातेनेव मथितः कर्णिकारः ॥७८॥

78.
Right there, a battle took place with him (Kṛṣṇa) against this (demon), and with the mighty one (demon) against the exceedingly powerful Viṣṇu. Struck by Kṛṣṇa, he (the demon) lay lifeless, like a Karnikara tree shattered by the wind.
आहृत्य कृष्णो मणिकुण्डले ते हत्वा च भौमं नरकं मुरं च ।

Having retrieved those jeweled earrings, and having killed Bhauma, Naraka, and Murā, the wise Kṛṣṇa, adorned with splendor and fame, and possessing incomparable power, returned.
तस्मै वरानददंस्तत्र देवा दृष्ट्वा भीमं कर्म रणे कृतं तत् ।
श्रमश्च ते युध्यमानस्य न स्यादाकाशे वा अप्सु चैव क्रमः स्यात् ॥८०॥

80. tasmai varānadadaṁstatra devā; dṛṣṭvā bhīmaṁ karma raṇe kṛtaṁ tat ,

tasmai varān adadan tatra devāḥ

80.
There, having seen his dreadful deed (karma) performed in battle, the gods granted him boons. For you, who are fighting, there would be no fatigue, and you would be able to move in the sky and in water.
शस्त्राणि गात्रे च न ते क्रमेरन्नित्येव कृष्णश्च ततः कृतार्थः ।
एवंरूपे वासुदेवेऽप्रमेये महाबले गुणसंपत्सदैव ॥८१॥

81.
No weapons would penetrate your body, and thus Kṛṣṇa was eternally fulfilled. In such a form, the immeasurable and mighty Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) always possesses an abundance of virtues.
तमसह्यं विष्णुमनन्तवीर्यमाशंसते धार्तराष्ट्रो बलेन ।
यदा ह्येनं तर्कयते दुरात्मा तच्चाप्ययं सहतेऽस्मान्समीक्ष्य ॥८२॥
यदा ह्येनं तर्कयते दुरात्मा तच्चाप्ययं सहतेऽस्मान्समीक्ष्य ॥८२॥
82. tamasahyaṁ viṣṇumanantavīrya;māśaṁsate dhārtarāṣṭro balena ,
yadā hyenaṁ tarkayate durātmā; taccāpyayaṁ sahate'smānsamīkṣya.

tam asahyam viṣṇum anantavīryam

82.
The son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Dhārtarāṣṭra), by his might, challenges that unbearable Viṣṇu of infinite valor. Whenever that evil-minded one considers him, this (Viṣṇu), observing us, endures it.
पर्यागतं मम कृष्णस्य चैव यो मन्यते कलहं संप्रयुज्य ।
शक्यं हर्तुं पाण्डवानां ममत्वं तद्वेदिता संयुगं तत्र गत्वा ॥८३॥

83. paryāgataṁ mama kṛṣṇasya caiva; yo manyate kalahaṁ saṁprayujya ,
śakyaṁ hartuṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ mamatvaṁ; tadveditā saṁyugaṁ tatra gatvā.

83.
Whoever, having initiated a quarrel, believes that the possession of the Pāṇḍavas, which has returned to me and Kṛṣṇa, can be stolen - that person, having gone to battle, will understand.
नमस्कृत्वा शांतनवाय राज्ञे द्रोणायाथो सहपुत्राय चैव ।
शारद्वतायाप्रतिद्वन्द्विने च योत्स्याम्यहं राज्यमभीप्समानः ॥८४॥

84. namaskṛtvā śāṁtanavāya rājñe; droṇāyātho sahaputrāya caiva ,

84.
Having paid obeisance to the son of Śāntanu (Bhīṣma), to the revered Droṇa along with his son (Aśvatthāmā), and to the unrivaled Kṛpa, I will fight, desiring the kingdom.
धर्मेणास्त्रं नियतं तस्य मन्ये यो योत्स्यते पाण्डवैर्धर्मचारी ।
मिथ्याग्लहे निर्जिता वै नृशंसैः संवत्सरान्द्वादश पाण्डुपुत्राः ॥८५॥

85. dharmeṇāstraṁ niyataṁ tasya manye; yo yotsyate pāṇḍavairdharmacārī ,
mithyāglahe nirjitā vai nṛśaṁsaiḥ; saṁvatsarāndvādaśa pāṇḍuputrāḥ.

dharmeṇa astram niyatam tasya manye
yaḥ yotsyate pāṇḍuvaiḥ dharmacārī

yaḥ yotsyate pāṇḍuvaiḥ dharmacārī

85.
I believe that the weapon (astra) of one who will fight the Pāṇḍavas, being a follower of natural law (dharma), is destined by natural law (dharma). For the sons of Pāṇḍu were indeed defeated in a deceitful game of chance by cruel men and spent twelve years (in exile).
अवाप्य कृच्छ्रं विहितं ह्यरण्ये दीर्घं कालं चैकमज्ञातचर्याम् ।
ते ह्यकस्माज्जीवितं पाण्डवानां न मृष्यन्ते धार्तराष्ट्राः पदस्थाः ॥८६॥

Indeed, after the Pāṇḍavas underwent the prescribed hardship in the forest for a long time, and one year of incognito living, the Dhārtarāṣṭras (Kauravas), who are firmly established in their positions, suddenly do not tolerate the Pāṇḍavas' continued existence.
ते चेदस्मान्युध्यमानाञ्जयेयुर्देवैरपीन्द्रप्रमुखैः सहायैः ।
धर्मादधर्मश्चरितो गरीयानिति ध्रुवं नास्ति कृतं न साधु ॥८७॥

If they (the Pāṇḍavas), with the gods led by Indra as their allies, were to defeat us who are fighting, then indeed unrighteousness (adharma) would prevail over natural law (dharma). In such a case, certainly, no good deed could ever be accomplished.
न चेदिमं पुरुषं कर्मबद्धं न चेदस्मान्मन्यतेऽसौ विशिष्टान् ।
आशंसेऽहं वासुदेवद्वितीयो दुर्योधनं सानुबन्धं निहन्तुम् ॥८८॥

88.
If he does not regard this man, bound by his past actions (karma), as well as us, as superior, then I, accompanied by Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), desire to slay Duryodhana along with all his kinsmen.
न चेदिदं कर्म नरेषु बद्धं न विद्यते पुरुषस्य स्वकर्म ।
इदं च तच्चापि समीक्ष्य नूनं पराजयो धार्तराष्ट्रस्य साधुः ॥८९॥

If this binding (karma) is not inherent in men, and if a man's own individual action (svakarma) does not exist, then certainly, having thoroughly considered both these points, the defeat of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons (the Kauravas) is justified.
प्रत्यक्षं वः कुरवो यद्ब्रवीमि युध्यमाना धार्तराष्ट्रा न सन्ति ।
अन्यत्र युद्धात्कुरवः परीप्सन्न युध्यतां शेष इहास्ति कश्चित् ॥९०॥

90.
O Kurus, what I declare is manifest to you: The fighting sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra will not survive. Among the Kurus, apart from those who are actively engaged in battle and desire to protect themselves, no one who refrains from fighting remains here.
हत्वा त्वहं धार्तराष्ट्रान्सकर्णान्राज्यं कुरूणामवजेता समग्रम् ।
यद्वः कार्यं तत्कुरुध्वं यथास्वमिष्टान्दारानात्मजांश्चोपभुङ्क्त ॥९१॥

91.
Indeed, having slain the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra along with Karṇa, I shall conquer the entire kingdom of the Kurus. Therefore, whatever task is appropriate for you, perform that according to your own means, and enjoy your beloved wives and children.
अप्येवं नो ब्राह्मणाः सन्ति वृद्धा बहुश्रुताः शीलवन्तः कुलीनाः ।
सांवत्सरा ज्योतिषि चापि युक्ता नक्षत्रयोगेषु च निश्चयज्ञाः ॥९२॥

vṛddhāḥ bahuśrutāḥ śīlavantaḥ kulīnāḥ

92.
Even so, we have venerable Brahmins who are highly learned, virtuous, and of noble lineage. They are also adept in astrology (jyotiṣa) and astronomy, possessing certain knowledge regarding the conjunctions of constellations.
उच्चावचं दैवयुक्तं रहस्यं दिव्याः प्रश्ना मृगचक्रा मुहूर्ताः ।
क्षयं महान्तं कुरुसृञ्जयानां निवेदयन्ते पाण्डवानां जयं च ॥९३॥

93. uccāvacaṁ daivayuktaṁ rahasyaṁ; divyāḥ praśnā mṛgacakrā muhūrtāḥ ,

divyāḥ praśnāḥ mṛgacakrāḥ muhūrtāḥ

93.
They (the Brahmins) reveal diverse, divinely connected mysteries, including celestial inquiries, zodiacal signs, and auspicious moments. They foretell a great destruction for the Kurus and Sṛñjayas, and victory for the Pāṇḍavas.
तथा हि नो मन्यतेऽजातशत्रुः संसिद्धार्थो द्विषतां निग्रहाय ।
जनार्दनश्चाप्यपरोक्षविद्यो न संशयं पश्यति वृष्णिसिंहः ॥९४॥

94. tathā hi no manyate'jātaśatruḥ; saṁsiddhārtho dviṣatāṁ nigrahāya ,

94.
Indeed, Yudhishthira (ajātaśatru), whose purpose to subdue the enemies (dviṣat) is now certain, also holds this belief. And Janardana (Krishna), the lion among the Vṛṣṇis, possessing direct knowledge, sees no room for doubt either.
अहं च जानामि भविष्यरूपं पश्यामि बुद्ध्या स्वयमप्रमत्तः ।
दृष्टिश्च मे न व्यथते पुराणी युध्यमाना धार्तराष्ट्रा न सन्ति ॥९५॥

95.
And I myself, vigilant and discerning, know the nature of the future and perceive it with my intellect. My long-standing insight does not falter, for the Dhārtarāṣṭras, even while fighting, will cease to exist.
अनालब्धं जृम्भति गाण्डिवं धनुरनालब्धा कम्पति मे धनुर्ज्या ।
बाणाश्च मे तूणमुखाद्विसृज्य मुहुर्मुहुर्गन्तुमुशन्ति चैव ॥९६॥
बाणाश्च मे तूणमुखाद्विसृज्य मुहुर्मुहुर्गन्तुमुशन्ति चैव ॥९६॥
96. anālabdhaṁ jṛmbhati gāṇḍivaṁ dhanu;ranālabdhā kampati me dhanurjyā ,
bāṇāśca me tūṇamukhādvisṛjya; muhurmuhurgantumuśanti caiva.

96.

96.
Untouched, my bow Gāṇḍīva stretches on its own, and my bowstring vibrates, also untouched. My arrows, eager to be released from the quiver, repeatedly desire to fly forth.
सैक्यः कोशान्निःसरति प्रसन्नो हित्वेव जीर्णामुरगस्त्वचं स्वाम् ।
ध्वजे वाचो रौद्ररूपा वदन्ति कदा रथो योक्ष्यते ते किरीटिन् ॥९७॥

97. saikyaḥ kośānniḥsarati prasanno; hitveva jīrṇāmuragastvacaṁ svām ,

97.
An arrow, bright and ready, slips from the quiver, just as a snake casts off its old skin. On the banner, fierce voices proclaim, 'O Kiriṭin (Arjuna), when will your chariot be yoked?'
गोमायुसंघाश्च वदन्ति रात्रौ रक्षांस्यथो निष्पतन्त्यन्तरिक्षात् ।
मृगाः शृगालाः शितिकण्ठाश्च काका गृध्रा बडाश्चैव तरक्षवश्च ॥९८॥

98. gomāyusaṁghāśca vadanti rātrau; rakṣāṁsyatho niṣpatantyantarikṣāt ,

gomāyusaṃghāḥ ca vadanti rātrau
rakṣāṃsi atho niṣpatanti antarikṣāt
mṛgāḥ śṛgālāḥ śitikaṇṭhāḥ ca kākāḥ
gṛdhrāḥ baḍāḥ ca eva tarakṣavaḥ ca
rakṣāṃsi atho niṣpatanti antarikṣāt
mṛgāḥ śṛgālāḥ śitikaṇṭhāḥ ca kākāḥ

98.
At night, hosts of jackals howl, and Rākṣasas (demons) fall from the sky. Deer, jackals, blue-throated birds, crows, vultures, large birds (baḍāḥ), and hyenas also make their presence known.
सुपर्णपाताश्च पतन्ति पश्चाद्दृष्ट्वा रथं श्वेतहयप्रयुक्तम् ।
अहं ह्येकः पार्थिवान्सर्वयोधाञ्शरान्वर्षन्मृत्युलोकं नयेयम् ॥९९॥

99. suparṇapātāśca patanti paścā;ddṛṣṭvā rathaṁ śvetahayaprayuktam ,

99.
And large birds (suparṇapātāḥ) swoop down from behind upon seeing the chariot drawn by white horses. Indeed, I alone, by showering arrows, could send all kings and warriors to the realm of death.
समाददानः पृथगस्त्रमार्गान्यथाग्निरिद्धो गहनं निदाघे ।
स्थूणाकर्णं पाशुपतं च घोरं तथा ब्रह्मास्त्रं यच्च शक्रो विवेद ॥१००॥

100. samādadānaḥ pṛthagastramārgā;nyathāgniriddho gahanaṁ nidāghe ,

100.
samādadānaḥ pṛthak astra-mārgān
yathā agniḥ iddhaḥ gahanaṃ nidāghe
sthūṇākarṇaṃ pāśupataṃ ca ghoraṃ
tathā brahmāstraṃ yat ca śakraḥ viveda
yathā agniḥ iddhaḥ gahanaṃ nidāghe
sthūṇākarṇaṃ pāśupataṃ ca ghoraṃ
tathā brahmāstraṃ yat ca śakraḥ viveda
100.
He gathered various types of weapons just as a fire, intensely kindled in a dense thicket during summer, consumes everything. These included the Sthūṇākarṇa, the terrible Pāśupata, and the Brahmāstra, which even Indra knew.
वधे धृतो वेगवतः प्रमुञ्चन्नाहं प्रजाः किंचिदिवावशिष्ये ।
शान्तिं लप्स्ये परमो ह्येष भावः स्थिरो मम ब्रूहि गावल्गणे तान् ॥१०१॥
शान्तिं लप्स्ये परमो ह्येष भावः स्थिरो मम ब्रूहि गावल्गणे तान् ॥१०१॥
101. vadhe dhṛto vegavataḥ pramuñca;nnāhaṁ prajāḥ kiṁcidivāvaśiṣye ,
śāntiṁ lapsye paramo hyeṣa bhāvaḥ; sthiro mama brūhi gāvalgaṇe tān.

101.
vadhe dhṛtaḥ vegavataḥ pramuñcan na
aham prajāḥ kiṃcit iva avaśiṣye

aham prajāḥ kiṃcit iva avaśiṣye

101.
O Gavalgaṇa, tell them: 'If I, determined upon destruction, releasing swift weapons, do not leave even a small portion of living beings (prajāḥ) remaining, I shall (then) obtain peace. For this is indeed my supreme and firm purpose (bhāva).'
नित्यं पुनः सचिवैर्यैरवोचद्देवानपीन्द्रप्रमुखान्सहायान् ।
तैर्मन्यते कलहं संप्रयुज्य स धार्तराष्ट्रः पश्यत मोहमस्य ॥१०२॥

102.
He (Duryodhana), together with his counselors, constantly spoke of even the gods, led by Indra, as his allies. Yet, it is with these very (counselors) that he now intends to engage in conflict. Behold his delusion (moha)!
वृद्धो भीष्मः शांतनवः कृपश्च द्रोणः सपुत्रो विदुरश्च धीमान् ।
एते सर्वे यद्वदन्ते तदस्तु आयुष्मन्तः कुरवः सन्तु सर्वे ॥१०३॥
