जनमेजय उवाच ।
आपगेयं महात्मानं भीष्मं शस्त्रभृतां वरम् ।
पितामहं भारतानां ध्वजं सर्वमहीक्षिताम् ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
āpageyaṁ mahātmānaṁ bhīṣmaṁ śastrabhṛtāṁ varam ,

1. Janamejaya said: (He spoke of) the great-souled Bhīṣma, son of Gaṅgā, the foremost among weapon-wielders, the grandfather of the Bhāratas, and the emblem of all kings.
बृहस्पतिसमं बुद्ध्या क्षमया पृथिवीसमम् ।
समुद्रमिव गाम्भीर्ये हिमवन्तमिव स्थिरम् ॥२॥
2. bṛhaspatisamaṁ buddhyā kṣamayā pṛthivīsamam ,
samudramiva gāmbhīrye himavantamiva sthiram.

2. (He was) equal to Bṛhaspati in intellect, to the earth in patience; like the ocean in profundity, and like the Himālaya in steadfastness.
प्रजापतिमिवौदार्ये तेजसा भास्करोपमम् ।
महेन्द्रमिव शत्रूणां ध्वंसनं शरवृष्टिभिः ॥३॥
3. prajāpatimivaudārye tejasā bhāskaropamam ,
mahendramiva śatrūṇāṁ dhvaṁsanaṁ śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ.

3. (He was) like Prajāpati in generosity, comparable to the sun in prowess; and like Mahendra in the destruction of enemies with showers of arrows.
रणयज्ञे प्रतिभये स्वाभीले लोमहर्षणे ।
दीक्षितं चिररात्राय श्रुत्वा राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥४॥
4. raṇayajñe pratibhaye svābhīle lomaharṣaṇe ,
dīkṣitaṁ cirarātrāya śrutvā rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.

4. King Yudhiṣṭhira, having heard that [someone] was consecrated for a long period to the battle-Vedic ritual (yajña), which was terrifying, truly terrible, and hair-raising...
किमब्रवीन्महाबाहुः सर्वधर्मविशारदः ।
भीमसेनार्जुनौ वापि कृष्णो वा प्रत्यपद्यत ॥५॥
5. kimabravīnmahābāhuḥ sarvadharmaviśāradaḥ ,
bhīmasenārjunau vāpi kṛṣṇo vā pratyapadyata.

5. What did the mighty-armed Yudhishthira (yudhiṣṭhira), expert in all aspects of natural law (dharma), say? Or did Bhimasena and Arjuna, or even Krishna (kṛṣṇa), respond?
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
आपद्धर्मार्थकुशलो महाबुद्धिर्युधिष्ठिरः ।
सर्वान्भ्रातॄन्समानीय वासुदेवं च सात्वतम् ।
उवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठः सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः ॥६॥
6. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
āpaddharmārthakuśalo mahābuddhiryudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
sarvānbhrātṝnsamānīya vāsudevaṁ ca sātvatam ,
uvāca vadatāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ sāntvapūrvamidaṁ vacaḥ.
6. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca āpaddharmārthakuśalaḥ
mahābuddhiḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sarvān bhrātṝn
samānīya vāsudevaṃ ca sātvatam uvāca
vadatām śreṣṭhaḥ sāntvapūrvam idaṃ vacaḥ
6. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca.
mahābuddhiḥ āpaddharmārthakuśalaḥ vadatām śreṣṭhaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ,
sarvān bhrātṝn ca sātvatam vāsudevaṃ samānīya,
idaṃ sāntvapūrvam vacaḥ uvāca.
6. Vaishampayana (vaiśaṃpāyana) said: Yudhishthira (yudhiṣṭhira), the one with great intellect and the best among speakers, who was skilled in the conduct required in times of calamity (āpaddharma) and in matters of practical policy (artha), assembled all his brothers and Vasudeva (vāsudeva) (Krishna), the Satvata, and spoke these conciliatory words.
पर्याक्रामत सैन्यानि यत्तास्तिष्ठत दंशिताः ।
पितामहेन वो युद्धं पूर्वमेव भविष्यति ।
तस्मात्सप्तसु सेनासु प्रणेतॄन्मम पश्यत ॥७॥
7. paryākrāmata sainyāni yattāstiṣṭhata daṁśitāḥ ,
pitāmahena vo yuddhaṁ pūrvameva bhaviṣyati ,
tasmātsaptasu senāsu praṇetṝnmama paśyata.

daṃśitāḥ pitāmahena vaḥ yuddhaṃ
pūrvam eva bhaviṣyati tasmāt

7. sainyāni paryākrāmata! yattāḥ daṃśitāḥ tiṣṭhata! vaḥ yuddhaṃ pitāmahena pūrvam eva bhaviṣyati.
tasmāt saptasu senāsu mama praṇetṝn paśyata.
7. You all, take your positions among the armies! Stand ready and armored! Your battle will primarily be with Grandfather (pitāmaha) [Bhishma] himself. Therefore, behold my commanders in the seven armies!
वासुदेव उवाच ।
यथार्हति भवान्वक्तुमस्मिन्काल उपस्थिते ।
तथेदमर्थवद्वाक्यमुक्तं ते भरतर्षभ ॥८॥
8. vāsudeva uvāca ,
yathārhati bhavānvaktumasminkāla upasthite ,
tathedamarthavadvākyamuktaṁ te bharatarṣabha.

upasthite tathā idam arthavat vākyam uktam te bharatarṣabha

8. Vāsudeva said: "O chief of the Bhāratas, as you are indeed qualified to speak, now that this crucial time has arrived, so this meaningful statement has been spoken by you."
रोचते मे महाबाहो क्रियतां यदनन्तरम् ।
नायकास्तव सेनायामभिषिच्यन्तु सप्त वै ॥९॥
9. rocate me mahābāho kriyatāṁ yadanantaram ,
nāyakāstava senāyāmabhiṣicyantu sapta vai.

9. "O mighty-armed one, what comes next pleases me; let it be done. Indeed, let seven commanders be anointed in your army."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो द्रुपदमानाय्य विराटं शिनिपुंगवम् ।
धृष्टद्युम्नं च पाञ्चाल्यं धृष्टकेतुं च पार्थिवम् ।
शिखण्डिनं च पाञ्चाल्यं सहदेवं च मागधम् ॥१०॥
10. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato drupadamānāyya virāṭaṁ śinipuṁgavam ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ ca pāñcālyaṁ dhṛṣṭaketuṁ ca pārthivam ,
śikhaṇḍinaṁ ca pāñcālyaṁ sahadevaṁ ca māgadham.
10. vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ drupadam ānāyya
virāṭam śinipuṅgavam dhṛṣṭadyumnam ca
pāñcālyam dhṛṣṭaketum ca pārthivam śikhaṇḍinam
ca pāñcālyam sahadevam ca māgadham
10. vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ drupadam virāṭam
śinipuṅgavam ca dhṛṣṭadyumnam pāñcālyam
ca dhṛṣṭaketum pārthivam ca śikhaṇḍinam
pāñcālyam ca sahadevam māgadham ca ānāyya
10. Vaiśampāyana said: "Then, (Yudhiṣṭhira) summoned Drupada, Virāṭa (the foremost of the Śinis), Dhṛṣṭadyumna (the Pāñcāla prince), Dhṛṣṭaketu (the king), Śikhaṇḍin (the Pāñcāla prince), and Sahadeva (the king of Magadha."
एतान्सप्त महेष्वासान्वीरान्युद्धाभिनन्दिनः ।
सेनाप्रणेतॄन्विधिवदभ्यषिञ्चद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥११॥
11. etānsapta maheṣvāsānvīrānyuddhābhinandinaḥ ,
senāpraṇetṝnvidhivadabhyaṣiñcadyudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
11. etān sapta mahā iṣvāsān vīrān yuddha abhinandinaḥ
senāpraṇetṝn vidhivat abhyaṣiñcat yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
11. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ etān sapta mahā iṣvāsān yuddha
abhinandinaḥ vīrān senāpraṇetṝn vidhivat abhyaṣiñcat
11. Yudhiṣṭhira then duly anointed these seven great archers, these heroes who delight in battle, as the commanders of the army.
सर्वसेनापतिं चात्र धृष्टद्युम्नमुपादिशत् ।
द्रोणान्तहेतोरुत्पन्नो य इद्धाज्जातवेदसः ॥१२॥
12. sarvasenāpatiṁ cātra dhṛṣṭadyumnamupādiśat ,
droṇāntahetorutpanno ya iddhājjātavedasaḥ.
12. sarvasenāpatim ca atra dhṛṣṭadyumnam upādiśat
| droṇāntahetoḥ utpannaḥ yaḥ iddhāt jātavedasaḥ
12. atra sarvasenāpatim dhṛṣṭadyumnam ca upādiśat yaḥ droṇāntahetoḥ iddhāt jātavedasaḥ utpannaḥ.
12. Here, he appointed Dhrishtadyumna as the general of all armies, the one who was born from the blazing fire (jātavedas) specifically for the purpose of Drona's demise.
सर्वेषामेव तेषां तु समस्तानां महात्मनाम् ।
सेनापतिपतिं चक्रे गुडाकेशं धनंजयम् ॥१३॥
13. sarveṣāmeva teṣāṁ tu samastānāṁ mahātmanām ,
senāpatipatiṁ cakre guḍākeśaṁ dhanaṁjayam.
13. sarveṣām eva teṣām tu samastānām mahātmanām
| senāpatipatim cakre guḍākeśam dhanañjayam
13. tu teṣām sarveṣām eva samastānām mahātmanām guḍākeśam dhanañjayam senāpatipatim cakre.
13. Among all those great souls assembled there, he certainly appointed Dhananjaya (Guḍākeśa) as the commander-in-chief.
अर्जुनस्यापि नेता च संयन्ता चैव वाजिनाम् ।
संकर्षणानुजः श्रीमान्महाबुद्धिर्जनार्दनः ॥१४॥
14. arjunasyāpi netā ca saṁyantā caiva vājinām ,
saṁkarṣaṇānujaḥ śrīmānmahābuddhirjanārdanaḥ.
14. arjunasya api netā ca saṃyantā ca eva vājinām
| saṃkarṣaṇānujaḥ śrīmān mahābuddhiḥ janārdanaḥ
14. śrīmān mahābuddhiḥ saṃkarṣaṇānujaḥ janārdanaḥ arjunasya vājinām netā ca saṃyantā ca eva api.
14. Indeed, the glorious and greatly intelligent Janardana (Krishna), younger brother of Sankarshana (Balarama), was also the leader and charioteer of Arjuna's horses.
तद्दृष्ट्वोपस्थितं युद्धं समासन्नं महात्ययम् ।
प्राविशद्भवनं राज्ञः पाण्डवस्य हलायुधः ॥१५॥
15. taddṛṣṭvopasthitaṁ yuddhaṁ samāsannaṁ mahātyayam ,
prāviśadbhavanaṁ rājñaḥ pāṇḍavasya halāyudhaḥ.
15. tat dṛṣṭvā upasthitam yuddham samāsannam mahātyayam
| prāviśat bhavanam rājñaḥ pāṇḍavasya halāyudhaḥ
15. halāyudhaḥ tat upasthitam samāsannam mahātyayam yuddham dṛṣṭvā,
pāṇḍavasya rājñaḥ bhavanam prāviśat.
15. Having seen that war, which was imminent and portending great destruction, Halayudha (Balarama) entered the palace of the Pāṇḍava king.
सहाक्रूरप्रभृतिभिर्गदसाम्बोल्मुकादिभिः ।
रौक्मिणेयाहुकसुतैश्चारुदेष्णपुरोगमैः ॥१६॥
16. sahākrūraprabhṛtibhirgadasāmbolmukādibhiḥ ,
raukmiṇeyāhukasutaiścārudeṣṇapurogamaiḥ.
16. saha akrūraprabhṛtibhiḥ gadasāmbolmukādibhiḥ
raukmiṇeyāhukasutaiḥ ca cārudeṣṇapurogamaiḥ
16. saha akrūraprabhṛtibhiḥ gadasāmbolmukādibhiḥ

16. Accompanied by Akrūra and other leading figures, including Gada, Sāmba, and Ulmuka, as well as by the sons of Pradyumna (Raukmiṇeya) and Āhuka, with Cārudeṣṇa prominent among them.
वृष्णिमुख्यैरभिगतैर्व्याघ्रैरिव बलोत्कटैः ।
अभिगुप्तो महाबाहुर्मरुद्भिरिव वासवः ॥१७॥
17. vṛṣṇimukhyairabhigatairvyāghrairiva balotkaṭaiḥ ,
abhigupto mahābāhurmarudbhiriva vāsavaḥ.
17. vṛṣṇimukhyaiḥ abhigataiḥ vyāghraiḥ iva balotkaṭaiḥ
abhigaptaḥ mahābāhuḥ marudbhiḥ iva vāsavaḥ

vyāghraiḥ iva abhigaptaḥ vāsavaḥ marudbhiḥ iva
17. The mighty-armed one (Kṛṣṇa), attended by the chief Vṛṣṇis, who were as powerful as tigers, was protected just as Indra is by the Maruts.
नीलकौशेयवसनः कैलासशिखरोपमः ।
सिंहखेलगतिः श्रीमान्मदरक्तान्तलोचनः ॥१८॥
18. nīlakauśeyavasanaḥ kailāsaśikharopamaḥ ,
siṁhakhelagatiḥ śrīmānmadaraktāntalocanaḥ.

siṃhakhelagatiḥ śrīmān madaraktāntalocanaḥ

18. He wore blue silk garments and resembled the peak of Mount Kailāsa. Glorious, with the majestic gait of a lion, his eyes were red at the corners, expressive of joy or passion.
तं दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजश्च केशवश्च महाद्युतिः ।
उदतिष्ठत्तदा पार्थो भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः ॥१९॥
19. taṁ dṛṣṭvā dharmarājaśca keśavaśca mahādyutiḥ ,
udatiṣṭhattadā pārtho bhīmakarmā vṛkodaraḥ.
19. tam dṛṣṭvā dharmarājaḥ ca keśavaḥ ca mahādyutiḥ
udatiṣṭhat tadā pārthaḥ bhīmakarmā vṛkodaraḥ

bhīmakarmā vṛkodaraḥ tam dṛṣṭvā tadā udatiṣṭhat
19. Having seen him (Kṛṣṇa), Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira), and Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) himself, the greatly splendid one, then Pārtha (Arjuna) and Bhīmasena, the wolf-bellied one (Vṛkodara) of terrible deeds (karma), rose up.
गाण्डीवधन्वा ये चान्ये राजानस्तत्र केचन ।
पूजयां चक्रुरभ्येत्य ते स्म सर्वे हलायुधम् ॥२०॥
20. gāṇḍīvadhanvā ye cānye rājānastatra kecana ,
pūjayāṁ cakrurabhyetya te sma sarve halāyudham.
20. gāṇḍīvadhanvā ye ca anye rājānaḥ tatra kecana
pūjayām cakruḥ abhyetya te sma sarve halāyudham
20. gāṇḍīvadhanvā ye ca anye kecana rājānaḥ tatra

20. Arjuna, the wielder of the Gaṇḍīva bow, and some other kings present there, all of them approached and worshiped Halāyudha (Balarāma).
ततस्तं पाण्डवो राजा करे पस्पर्श पाणिना ।
वासुदेवपुरोगास्तु सर्व एवाभ्यवादयन् ॥२१॥
21. tatastaṁ pāṇḍavo rājā kare pasparśa pāṇinā ,
vāsudevapurogāstu sarva evābhyavādayan.
21. tataḥ tam pāṇḍavaḥ rājā kare pasparśa pāṇinā
vāsudevapuragāḥ tu sarve eva abhyavādayan
21. tataḥ pāṇḍavaḥ rājā pāṇinā kare tam pasparśa

21. Then the Pāṇḍava king (Yudhiṣṭhira) touched his (Balarāma's) hand with his own hand. But all those led by Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) paid homage.
विराटद्रुपदौ वृद्धावभिवाद्य हलायुधः ।
युधिष्ठिरेण सहित उपाविशदरिंदमः ॥२२॥
22. virāṭadrupadau vṛddhāvabhivādya halāyudhaḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhireṇa sahita upāviśadariṁdamaḥ.
22. virāṭadrupadau vṛddhau abhivādya halāyudhaḥ
yudhiṣṭhireṇa sahitaḥ upāviśat arimdamah
22. arimdamah halāyudhaḥ vṛddhau virāṭadrupadau

22. Having saluted the elderly Virāṭa and Drupada, Halāyudha (Balarāma), the subjugator of enemies, sat down together with Yudhiṣṭhira.
ततस्तेषूपविष्टेषु पार्थिवेषु समन्ततः ।
वासुदेवमभिप्रेक्ष्य रौहिणेयोऽभ्यभाषत ॥२३॥
23. tatasteṣūpaviṣṭeṣu pārthiveṣu samantataḥ ,
vāsudevamabhiprekṣya rauhiṇeyo'bhyabhāṣata.
23. tataḥ teṣu upaviṣṭeṣu pārthiveṣu samantataḥ
vāsudevam abhiprekṣya rauhiṇeyaḥ abhyabhāṣata
23. tataḥ teṣu pārthiveṣu samantataḥ upaviṣṭeṣu
rauhiṇeyaḥ vāsudevam abhiprekṣya abhyabhāṣata
23. Then, after those kings had sat down all around, Rohiṇī's son (Balarāma), having looked at Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), spoke.
भवितायं महारौद्रो दारुणः पुरुषक्षयः ।
दिष्टमेतद्ध्रुवं मन्ये न शक्यमतिवर्तितुम् ॥२४॥
24. bhavitāyaṁ mahāraudro dāruṇaḥ puruṣakṣayaḥ ,
diṣṭametaddhruvaṁ manye na śakyamativartitum.
24. bhavitā ayam mahāraudraḥ dāruṇaḥ puruṣakṣayaḥ
diṣṭam etat dhruvam manye na śakyam ativartitum
24. ayam mahāraudraḥ dāruṇaḥ puruṣakṣayaḥ bhavitā.
etat diṣṭam dhruvam manye.
ativartitum na śakyam.
24. This exceedingly dreadful and terrible destruction of men will come to pass. I consider this fate to be certain, and it cannot be averted.
अस्माद्युद्धात्समुत्तीर्णानपि वः ससुहृज्जनान् ।
अरोगानक्षतैर्देहैः पश्येयमिति मे मतिः ॥२५॥
25. asmādyuddhātsamuttīrṇānapi vaḥ sasuhṛjjanān ,
arogānakṣatairdehaiḥ paśyeyamiti me matiḥ.
25. asmāt yuddhāt samuttīrṇān api vaḥ sasuhṛjjanān
arogān akṣataiḥ dehaiḥ paśyeyam iti me matiḥ
25. me matiḥ iti (yad) aham vaḥ sasuhṛjjanān asmāt yuddhāt samuttīrṇān api arogān akṣataiḥ dehaiḥ paśyeyam.
25. This is my desire: that I may see all of you, along with your friends and relatives, even after you have emerged from this war, healthy and with uninjured bodies.
समेतं पार्थिवं क्षत्रं कालपक्वमसंशयम् ।
विमर्दः सुमहान्भावी मांसशोणितकर्दमः ॥२६॥
26. sametaṁ pārthivaṁ kṣatraṁ kālapakvamasaṁśayam ,
vimardaḥ sumahānbhāvī māṁsaśoṇitakardamaḥ.
26. sametam pārthivam kṣatram kālapakvam asaṃśayam
vimardaḥ sumahān bhāvī māṃsaśoṇitakardamaḥ
26. sametam pārthivam kṣatram asaṃśayam kālapakvam (asti).
sumahān māṃsaśoṇitakardamaḥ vimardaḥ bhāvī.
26. Without a doubt, the assembled warrior class (kṣatra) of kings is ripe for its destined end. A very great conflict, a mire of flesh and blood, is impending.
उक्तो मया वासुदेवः पुनः पुनरुपह्वरे ।
संबन्धिषु समां वृत्तिं वर्तस्व मधुसूदन ॥२७॥
27. ukto mayā vāsudevaḥ punaḥ punarupahvare ,
saṁbandhiṣu samāṁ vṛttiṁ vartasva madhusūdana.

sambandhiṣu samām vṛttim vartasva madhusūdana
27. mayā vāsudevaḥ punaḥ punaḥ upahvare uktaḥ: "he madhusūdana,
sambandhiṣu samām vṛttim vartasva.
"
27. I have repeatedly spoken to Vāsudeva (Krishna) privately, saying, "O Madhusūdana, maintain an impartial attitude towards your relatives."
पाण्डवा हि यथास्माकं तथा दुर्योधनो नृपः ।
तस्यापि क्रियतां युक्त्या सपर्येति पुनः पुनः ॥२८॥
28. pāṇḍavā hi yathāsmākaṁ tathā duryodhano nṛpaḥ ,
tasyāpi kriyatāṁ yuktyā saparyeti punaḥ punaḥ.
28. pāṇḍavāḥ hi yathā asmākam tathā duryodhanaḥ nṛpaḥ
tasya api kriyatām yuktyā saparyā iti punaḥ punaḥ
28. hi yathā asmākam pāṇḍavāḥ tathā nṛpaḥ duryodhanaḥ
tasya api yuktyā saparyā kriyatām punaḥ punaḥ iti
28. The Pāṇḍavas are certainly ours, and so too is King Duryodhana. Therefore, I repeatedly emphasize that he should also be honored appropriately.
तच्च मे नाकरोद्वाक्यं त्वदर्थे मधुसूदनः ।
निविष्टः सर्वभावेन धनंजयमवेक्ष्य च ॥२९॥
29. tacca me nākarodvākyaṁ tvadarthe madhusūdanaḥ ,
niviṣṭaḥ sarvabhāvena dhanaṁjayamavekṣya ca.
29. tat ca me na akarot vākyam tvad-arthe madhusūdanaḥ
niviṣṭaḥ sarva-bhāvena dhanañjayam avekṣya ca
29. ca madhusūdanaḥ me tat vākyam tvad-arthe na akarot
sarva-bhāvena dhanañjayam avekṣya niviṣṭaḥ ca
29. And Kṛṣṇa (madhusūdana) did not follow that advice of mine for your benefit, as he was entirely devoted to and focused on Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).
ध्रुवो जयः पाण्डवानामिति मे निश्चिता मतिः ।
तथा ह्यभिनिवेशोऽयं वासुदेवस्य भारत ॥३०॥
30. dhruvo jayaḥ pāṇḍavānāmiti me niścitā matiḥ ,
tathā hyabhiniveśo'yaṁ vāsudevasya bhārata.
30. dhruvaḥ jayaḥ pāṇḍavānām iti me niścitā matiḥ
tathā hi abhiniveśaḥ ayam vāsudevasya bhārata
30. bhārata me matiḥ niścitā iti pāṇḍavānām jayaḥ
dhruvaḥ hi tathā ayam vāsudevasya abhiniveśaḥ
30. My firm opinion is that the victory of the Pāṇḍavas is certain. This is because Kṛṣṇa (vāsudeva) indeed has such a resolute commitment, O descendant of Bharata (bhārata).
न चाहमुत्सहे कृष्णमृते लोकमुदीक्षितुम् ।
ततोऽहमनुवर्तामि केशवस्य चिकीर्षितम् ॥३१॥
31. na cāhamutsahe kṛṣṇamṛte lokamudīkṣitum ,
tato'hamanuvartāmi keśavasya cikīrṣitam.
31. na ca aham utsahe kṛṣṇam ṛte lokam udīkṣitum
tataḥ aham anuvartāmi keśavasya cikīrṣitam
31. ca aham kṛṣṇam ṛte lokam udīkṣitum na utsahe
tataḥ aham keśavasya cikīrṣitam anuvartāmi
31. And I am unable to look upon the world without Kṛṣṇa. Therefore, I shall abide by the will of Keśava (Kṛṣṇa).
उभौ शिष्यौ हि मे वीरौ गदायुद्धविशारदौ ।
तुल्यस्नेहोऽस्म्यतो भीमे तथा दुर्योधने नृपे ॥३२॥
32. ubhau śiṣyau hi me vīrau gadāyuddhaviśāradau ,
tulyasneho'smyato bhīme tathā duryodhane nṛpe.
32. ubhau śiṣyau hi me vīrau gadāyuddhaviśāradau
tulya_snehaḥ asmi ataḥ bhīme tathā duryodhane nṛpe
32. hi me ubhau vīrau gadāyuddhaviśāradau śiṣyau (sthaḥ) ataḥ
bhīme tathā nṛpe duryodhane (aham) tulya_snehaḥ asmi
32. Both these heroic disciples of mine are indeed experts in mace-fighting. Therefore, I have equal affection for Bhīma and King Duryodhana.
तस्माद्यास्यामि तीर्थानि सरस्वत्या निषेवितुम् ।
न हि शक्ष्यामि कौरव्यान्नश्यमानानुपेक्षितुम् ॥३३॥
33. tasmādyāsyāmi tīrthāni sarasvatyā niṣevitum ,
na hi śakṣyāmi kauravyānnaśyamānānupekṣitum.
33. tasmāt yāsyāmi tīrthāni sarasvatyā niṣevitum
na hi śakṣyāmi kauravyān naśyamānān upekṣitum
33. tasmāt sarasvatyā tīrthāni niṣevitum (aham) yāsyāmi
hi (aham) naśyamānān kauravyān upekṣitum na śakṣyāmi
33. Therefore, I will go to visit the holy places (tīrtha) along the Sarasvatī. For I will not be able to bear seeing the Kauravas perishing.
एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुरनुज्ञातश्च पाण्डवैः ।
तीर्थयात्रां ययौ रामो निवर्त्य मधुसूदनम् ॥३४॥
34. evamuktvā mahābāhuranujñātaśca pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
tīrthayātrāṁ yayau rāmo nivartya madhusūdanam.
34. evam uktvā mahābāhuḥ anujñātaḥ ca pāṇḍavaiḥ
tīrthayātrām yayau rāmaḥ nivartya madhusūdanam
34. mahābāhuḥ rāmaḥ evam uktvā ca pāṇḍavaiḥ anujñātaḥ
madhusūdanam nivartya tīrthayātrām yayau
34. Having thus spoken, the mighty-armed one (Balarāma), and permitted by the Pāṇḍavas, Balarāma departed on a pilgrimage (tīrthayātrā), having sent Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa) back.
