वासुदेव उवाच ।
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ गान्धारि मा च शोके मनः कृथाः ।
तवैव ह्यपराधेन कुरवो निधनं गताः ॥१॥
1. vāsudeva uvāca ,
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha gāndhāri mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ ,

1. Vāsudeva (Krishna) said: "Arise, arise, Gāndhārī! Do not dwell on sorrow. For indeed, it is solely due to your own transgression that the Kurus met their demise."
या त्वं पुत्रं दुरात्मानमीर्षुमत्यन्तमानिनम् ।
दुर्योधनं पुरस्कृत्य दुष्कृतं साधु मन्यसे ॥२॥
2. yā tvaṁ putraṁ durātmānamīrṣumatyantamāninam ,
duryodhanaṁ puraskṛtya duṣkṛtaṁ sādhu manyase.
2. yā tvam putram durātmānam īrṣum atyanta-māninam
duryodhanam puraskṛtya duṣkṛtam sādhu manyase
2. yā tvam durātmānam īrṣum atyanta-māninam putram duryodhanam puraskṛtya,

2. You, who championed your evil-minded, envious, and exceedingly arrogant son Duryodhana, considering his wrongdoing to be virtuous...
निष्ठुरं वैरपरुषं वृद्धानां शासनातिगम् ।
कथमात्मकृतं दोषं मय्याधातुमिहेच्छसि ॥३॥
3. niṣṭhuraṁ vairaparuṣaṁ vṛddhānāṁ śāsanātigam ,
kathamātmakṛtaṁ doṣaṁ mayyādhātumihecchasi.
3. niṣṭhuram vaira-paruṣam vṛddhānām śāsana-atigam
katham ātma-kṛtam doṣam mayi ādhātum iha icchasi
3. niṣṭhuram vaira-paruṣam vṛddhānām śāsana-atigam

3. How can you wish to attribute to me this fault, which was self-inflicted, harsh, ruthless due to hostility, and went against the commands of the elders?
मृतं वा यदि वा नष्टं योऽतीतमनुशोचति ।
दुःखेन लभते दुःखं द्वावनर्थौ प्रपद्यते ॥४॥
4. mṛtaṁ vā yadi vā naṣṭaṁ yo'tītamanuśocati ,
duḥkhena labhate duḥkhaṁ dvāvanarthau prapadyate.
4. mṛtam vā yadi vā naṣṭam yaḥ atītam anuśocati
duḥkhena labhate duḥkham dvau anarthau prapadyate
4. yaḥ mṛtam vā naṣṭam vā atītam anuśocati duḥkhena
duḥkham labhate dvau anarthau prapadyate
4. Whoever grieves over something dead, lost, or belonging to the past obtains sorrow through that very sorrow, and thus encounters two misfortunes.
तपोर्थीयं ब्राह्मणी धत्त गर्भं गौर्वोढारं धावितारं तुरंगी ।
शूद्रा दासं पशुपालं तु वैश्या वधार्थीयं त्वद्विधा राजपुत्री ॥५॥
5. taporthīyaṁ brāhmaṇī dhatta garbhaṁ; gaurvoḍhāraṁ dhāvitāraṁ turaṁgī ,
śūdrā dāsaṁ paśupālaṁ tu vaiśyā; vadhārthīyaṁ tvadvidhā rājaputrī.
5. taporthīyam brāhmaṇī dhatta garbham
gauḥ voḍhāram dhāvitāram turaṅgī
śūdrā dāsam paśupālam tu vaiśyā
vadhārthīyam tvadvidhā rājaputrī

5. A brahmin woman bears a child for the purpose of spiritual discipline (tapas); a cow bears one who will carry burdens; a mare bears a swift runner; a śūdra woman bears a servant; and a vaiśya woman bears a cattle-herder. But a princess like you bears one destined for destruction.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा वासुदेवस्य पुनरुक्तं वचोऽप्रियम् ।
तूष्णीं बभूव गान्धारी शोकव्याकुललोचना ॥६॥
6. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tacchrutvā vāsudevasya punaruktaṁ vaco'priyam ,
tūṣṇīṁ babhūva gāndhārī śokavyākulalocanā.
6. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tat śrutvā vāsudevasya punaruktam
vacaḥ apriyam tūṣṇīm babhūva gāndhārī śokavyākulalocanā
6. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca gāndhārī śokavyākulalocanā vāsudevasya
tat punaruktam apriyam vacaḥ śrutvā tūṣṇīm babhūva
6. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard that unpleasant, repeated speech of Vāsudeva (Krishna), Gāndhārī, whose eyes were agitated by sorrow, became silent.
धृतराष्ट्रस्तु राजर्षिर्निगृह्याबुद्धिजं तमः ।
पर्यपृच्छत धर्मात्मा धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥७॥
7. dhṛtarāṣṭrastu rājarṣirnigṛhyābuddhijaṁ tamaḥ ,
paryapṛcchata dharmātmā dharmarājaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.
7. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ tu rājarṣiḥ nigṛhya abuddhijam tamaḥ
paryapṛcchata dharmātmā dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram
7. tu dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ rājarṣiḥ dharmātmā abuddhijam tamaḥ
nigṛhya dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram paryapṛcchata
7. But Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the royal sage (rājarṣi), having suppressed the darkness (tamas) born of his lack of understanding, and being righteous-souled (dharmātmā), questioned Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira.
जीवतां परिमाणज्ञः सैन्यानामसि पाण्डव ।
हतानां यदि जानीषे परिमाणं वदस्व मे ॥८॥
8. jīvatāṁ parimāṇajñaḥ sainyānāmasi pāṇḍava ,
hatānāṁ yadi jānīṣe parimāṇaṁ vadasva me.
8. jīvatām parimāṇajñaḥ sainyānām asi pāṇḍava
| hatānām yadi jānīṣe parimāṇam vadasva me
8. pāṇḍava jīvatām sainyānām parimāṇajñaḥ asi
yadi hatānām parimāṇam jānīṣe me vadasva
8. O Pāṇḍava, you are the knower of the count of the living armies. If you know the number of those who were slain, tell it to me.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
दशायुतानामयुतं सहस्राणि च विंशतिः ।
कोट्यः षष्टिश्च षट्चैव येऽस्मिन्राजमृधे हताः ॥९॥
9. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
daśāyutānāmayutaṁ sahasrāṇi ca viṁśatiḥ ,
koṭyaḥ ṣaṣṭiśca ṣaṭcaiva ye'sminrājamṛdhe hatāḥ.
9. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca | daśāyutānām ayutam sahasrāṇi ca viṃśatiḥ
| koṭyaḥ ṣaṣṭiḥ ca ṣaṭ ca eva ye asmin rājamṛdhe hatāḥ
9. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca asmin rājamṛdhe ye daśāyutānām ayutam
ca viṃśatiḥ sahasrāṇi ca ṣaṣṭiḥ ca ṣaṭ ca eva koṭyaḥ hatāḥ
9. Yudhiṣṭhira said: In this royal battle (rājamṛdhe), sixty-six crores (koṭis) and one lakh thirty thousand soldiers were slain.
अलक्ष्याणां तु वीराणां सहस्राणि चतुर्दश ।
दश चान्यानि राजेन्द्र शतं षष्टिश्च पञ्च च ॥१०॥
10. alakṣyāṇāṁ tu vīrāṇāṁ sahasrāṇi caturdaśa ,
daśa cānyāni rājendra śataṁ ṣaṣṭiśca pañca ca.
10. alakṣyāṇām tu vīrāṇām sahasrāṇi caturdaśa | daśa
ca anyāni rājendra śatam ṣaṣṭiḥ ca pañca ca
10. rājendra tu alakṣyāṇām vīrāṇām caturdaśa sahasrāṇi
ca daśa anyāni ca śatam ca ṣaṣṭiḥ ca pañca ca
10. But, O King of kings (Rājendra), there were also fourteen thousand unidentifiable heroes, and ten thousand others, as well as one hundred sixty-five (more).
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
युधिष्ठिर गतिं कां ते गताः पुरुषसत्तमाः ।
आचक्ष्व मे महाबाहो सर्वज्ञो ह्यसि मे मतः ॥११॥
11. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
yudhiṣṭhira gatiṁ kāṁ te gatāḥ puruṣasattamāḥ ,
ācakṣva me mahābāho sarvajño hyasi me mataḥ.
11. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca | yudhiṣṭhira gatim kām te gatāḥ
puruṣasattamāḥ | ācakṣva me mahābāho sarvajñaḥ hi asi me mataḥ
11. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho te puruṣasattamāḥ
kām gatim gatāḥ me ācakṣva hi me sarvajñaḥ mataḥ asi
11. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Yudhiṣṭhira, what state or destination have those best of men (puruṣa) attained? Tell me, O mighty-armed one, for you are indeed regarded as all-knowing by me.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
यैर्हुतानि शरीराणि हृष्टैः परमसंयुगे ।
देवराजसमाँल्लोकान्गतास्ते सत्यविक्रमाः ॥१२॥
12. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
yairhutāni śarīrāṇi hṛṣṭaiḥ paramasaṁyuge ,
devarājasamāँllokāngatāste satyavikramāḥ.
12. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca yaiḥ hutāni śarīrāṇi hṛṣṭaiḥ
paramasaṃyuge devarājasamān lokān gatāḥ te satyavikramāḥ
12. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca yaiḥ hṛṣṭaiḥ satyavikramāḥ paramasaṃyuge śarīrāṇi hutāni,
te devarājasamān lokān gatāḥ
12. Yudhishthira said: Those truly valorous warriors who joyfully sacrificed their bodies in the supreme battle have gone to worlds equal to those of Indra, the king of the gods.
ये त्वहृष्टेन मनसा मर्तव्यमिति भारत ।
युध्यमाना हताः संख्ये ते गन्धर्वैः समागताः ॥१३॥
13. ye tvahṛṣṭena manasā martavyamiti bhārata ,
yudhyamānā hatāḥ saṁkhye te gandharvaiḥ samāgatāḥ.
13. ye tu ahṛṣṭena manasā martavyam iti bhārata
yudhyamānāḥ hatāḥ saṃkhye te gandharvaiḥ samāgatāḥ
13. bhārata,
ye tu ahṛṣṭena manasā martavyam iti [cintayantaḥ] saṃkhye yudhyamānāḥ hatāḥ,
te gandharvaiḥ samāgatāḥ
13. But O Bharata, those who, fighting in battle, were killed with an unhappy mind, thinking "one must die", they have gone to dwell among the Gandharvas.
ये तु संग्रामभूमिष्ठा याचमानाः पराङ्मुखाः ।
शस्त्रेण निधनं प्राप्ता गतास्ते गुह्यकान्प्रति ॥१४॥
14. ye tu saṁgrāmabhūmiṣṭhā yācamānāḥ parāṅmukhāḥ ,
śastreṇa nidhanaṁ prāptā gatāste guhyakānprati.
14. ye tu saṃgrāmabhūmiṣṭhāḥ yācamānāḥ parāṅmukhāḥ
śastreṇa nidhanam prāptāḥ gatāḥ te guhyakān prati
14. ye tu saṃgrāmabhūmiṣṭhāḥ yācamānāḥ parāṅmukhāḥ śastreṇa nidhanam prāptāḥ,
te guhyakān prati gatāḥ
14. But those who, standing on the battlefield, were retreating and begging for quarter, and thus met their death by weapons, they have gone to the Guhyakas.
पीड्यमानाः परैर्ये तु हीयमाना निरायुधाः ।
ह्रीनिषेधा महात्मानः परानभिमुखा रणे ॥१५॥
15. pīḍyamānāḥ parairye tu hīyamānā nirāyudhāḥ ,
hrīniṣedhā mahātmānaḥ parānabhimukhā raṇe.
15. pīḍyamānāḥ paraiḥ ye tu hīyamānāḥ nirāyudhāḥ
hrīniṣedhāḥ mahātmānaḥ parān abhimukhāḥ raṇe
15. ye tu mahātmānaḥ paraiḥ pīḍyamānāḥ,
hīyamānāḥ,
nirāyudhāḥ [ca],
hrīniṣedhāḥ [santaḥ],
raṇe parān abhimukhāḥ [āsan]
15. But those great-souled individuals who, being tormented by enemies, losing ground, and unarmed, were prevented by their sense of shame (hrī) from retreating, and thus remained facing their foes in battle.
छिद्यमानाः शितैः शस्त्रैः क्षत्रधर्मपरायणाः ।
गतास्ते ब्रह्मसदनं हता वीराः सुवर्चसः ॥१६॥
16. chidyamānāḥ śitaiḥ śastraiḥ kṣatradharmaparāyaṇāḥ ,
gatāste brahmasadanaṁ hatā vīrāḥ suvarcasaḥ.
16. chidyamānāḥ śitaiḥ śastraiḥ kṣatradharmaparāyaṇāḥ
gatāḥ te brahmasadanam hatāḥ vīrāḥ suvarcasaḥ
16. suvarcasaḥ vīrāḥ kṣatradharmaparāyaṇāḥ śitaiḥ
śastraiḥ chidyamānāḥ hatāḥ te brahmasadanam gatāḥ
16. The glorious heroes, dedicated to the intrinsic nature (dharma) of warriors, even though they were being cut down by sharp weapons, attained the abode of Brahman (brahman) when they were slain.
ये तत्र निहता राजन्नन्तरायोधनं प्रति ।
यथा कथंचित्ते राजन्संप्राप्ता उत्तरान्कुरून् ॥१७॥
17. ye tatra nihatā rājannantarāyodhanaṁ prati ,
yathā kathaṁcitte rājansaṁprāptā uttarānkurūn.
17. ye tatra nihatāḥ rājan antarāyodhanam prati
yathā kathañcit te rājan samprāptāḥ uttarān kurūn
17. rājan ye tatra antarāyodhanam prati nihatāḥ te
rājan yathā kathañcit uttarān kurūn samprāptāḥ
17. O King, those who were killed there in the battle, they, somehow or other, reached the Northern Kurus.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
केन ज्ञानबलेनैवं पुत्र पश्यसि सिद्धवत् ।
तन्मे वद महाबाहो श्रोतव्यं यदि वै मया ॥१८॥
18. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
kena jñānabalenaivaṁ putra paśyasi siddhavat ,
tanme vada mahābāho śrotavyaṁ yadi vai mayā.
18. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca kena jñānabalena evam putra paśyasi
siddhavat tat me vada mahābāho śrotavyam yadi vai mayā
18. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca putra mahābāho kena jñānabalena evam
siddhavat paśyasi tat me vada yadi vai mayā śrotavyam
18. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O son, O mighty-armed one, by what power of knowledge do you perceive things in this manner, as if you were a perfected sage? Tell that to me, if indeed I am meant to hear it.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
निदेशाद्भवतः पूर्वं वने विचरता मया ।
तीर्थयात्राप्रसङ्गेन संप्राप्तोऽयमनुग्रहः ॥१९॥
19. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
nideśādbhavataḥ pūrvaṁ vane vicaratā mayā ,
tīrthayātrāprasaṅgena saṁprāpto'yamanugrahaḥ.
19. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca nideśāt bhavataḥ pūrvam vane vicaratā
mayā tīrthayātrāprasaṅgena samprāptaḥ ayam anugrahaḥ
19. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca pūrvam bhavataḥ nideśāt mayā vane
vicaratā tīrthayātrāprasaṅgena ayam anugrahaḥ samprāptaḥ
19. Yudhiṣṭhira said: This favor (anugraha) was previously obtained by me, while I was wandering in the forest by your command, on the occasion of a pilgrimage.
देवर्षिर्लोमशो दृष्टस्ततः प्राप्तोऽस्म्यनुस्मृतिम् ।
दिव्यं चक्षुरपि प्राप्तं ज्ञानयोगेन वै पुरा ॥२०॥
20. devarṣirlomaśo dṛṣṭastataḥ prāpto'smyanusmṛtim ,
divyaṁ cakṣurapi prāptaṁ jñānayogena vai purā.
20. devarṣiḥ lomaśaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ tataḥ prāptaḥ asmi anusmṛtim
divyam cakṣuḥ api prāptam jñānayogena vai purā
20. purā vai jñānayogena devarṣiḥ lomaśaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ tataḥ
asmi anusmṛtim prāptaḥ divyam cakṣuḥ api prāptam
20. I saw the divine sage Lomasha, and from that, I obtained recollection (anusmṛti). Indeed, in the past, I also gained a divine eye through the yoga of knowledge (jñānayoga).
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
येऽत्रानाथा जनस्यास्य सनाथा ये च भारत ।
कच्चित्तेषां शरीराणि धक्ष्यन्ति विधिपूर्वकम् ॥२१॥
21. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
ye'trānāthā janasyāsya sanāthā ye ca bhārata ,
kaccitteṣāṁ śarīrāṇi dhakṣyanti vidhipūrvakam.
21. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca ye atra anāthāḥ janasya asya sanāthāḥ ye
ca bhārata kaccit teṣām śarīrāṇi dhakṣyanti vidhipūrvakam
21. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca bhārata asya janasya ye atra anāthāḥ ca
ye sanāthāḥ teṣām śarīrāṇi kaccit vidhipūrvakam dhakṣyanti
21. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "O Bhārata, among these people, both those who are without protection and those who have protection - will their bodies indeed be cremated according to the prescribed rites?"
न येषां सन्ति कर्तारो न च येऽत्राहिताग्नयः ।
वयं च कस्य कुर्यामो बहुत्वात्तात कर्मणः ॥२२॥
22. na yeṣāṁ santi kartāro na ca ye'trāhitāgnayaḥ ,
vayaṁ ca kasya kuryāmo bahutvāttāta karmaṇaḥ.
22. na yeṣām santi kartāraḥ na ca ye atra ahitāgnayaḥ
vayam ca kasya kuryāmaḥ bahutvāt tāta karmaṇaḥ
22. tāta karmaṇaḥ bahutvāt yeṣām kartāraḥ na santi ca ye atra ahitāgnayaḥ na,
vayam ca kasya kuryāmaḥ
22. For those who have no one to perform their rites, and for those who here have not maintained the sacred fires, for whom should we perform the funeral ceremonies, O dear one, given the multitude of such duties?
यान्सुपर्णाश्च गृध्राश्च विकर्षन्ति ततस्ततः ।
तेषां तु कर्मणा लोका भविष्यन्ति युधिष्ठिर ॥२३॥
23. yānsuparṇāśca gṛdhrāśca vikarṣanti tatastataḥ ,
teṣāṁ tu karmaṇā lokā bhaviṣyanti yudhiṣṭhira.
23. yān suparṇāḥ ca gṛdhrāḥ ca vikarṣanti tataḥ tataḥ
teṣām tu karmaṇā lokāḥ bhaviṣyanti yudhiṣṭhira
23. yudhiṣṭhira suparṇāḥ ca gṛdhrāḥ ca yān tataḥ tataḥ
vikarṣanti teṣām tu lokāḥ karmaṇā bhaviṣyanti
23. O Yudhishthira, for those whose bodies eagles and vultures drag here and there, what realms will be theirs by virtue of their own actions (karma)?
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तो महाप्राज्ञः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
आदिदेश सुधर्माणं धौम्यं सूतं च संजयम् ॥२४॥
24. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamukto mahāprājñaḥ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
ādideśa sudharmāṇaṁ dhaumyaṁ sūtaṁ ca saṁjayam.
24. vaiśampāyana uvāca evam uktaḥ mahāprājñaḥ kuntīputraḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ādideśa sudharmāṇam dhaumyam sūtam ca sañjayam
24. vaiśampāyana uvāca evam uktaḥ mahāprājñaḥ kuntīputraḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sudharmāṇam dhaumyam ca sūtam sañjayam ādideśa
24. Vaiśampāyana said: Having been thus addressed, the very wise Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kuntī, gave instructions to Sudharman, Dhaumya, and the charioteer Saṃjaya.
विदुरं च महाबुद्धिं युयुत्सुं चैव कौरवम् ।
इन्द्रसेनमुखांश्चैव भृत्यान्सूतांश्च सर्वशः ॥२५॥
25. viduraṁ ca mahābuddhiṁ yuyutsuṁ caiva kauravam ,
indrasenamukhāṁścaiva bhṛtyānsūtāṁśca sarvaśaḥ.
25. viduram ca mahābuddhim yuyutsum ca eva kauravam
indrasenamukhān ca eva bhṛtyān sūtān ca sarvaśaḥ
25. ca mahābuddhim viduram ca eva kauravam yuyutsum
ca eva indrasenamukhān ca sarvaśaḥ bhṛtyān sūtān
25. (He ordered) also Vidura, the highly intelligent one, and Yuyutsu, the Kaurava; and furthermore, all the servants and charioteers headed by Indrasena.
भवन्तः कारयन्त्वेषां प्रेतकार्याणि सर्वशः ।
यथा चानाथवत्किंचिच्छरीरं न विनश्यति ॥२६॥
26. bhavantaḥ kārayantveṣāṁ pretakāryāṇi sarvaśaḥ ,
yathā cānāthavatkiṁciccharīraṁ na vinaśyati.
26. bhavantaḥ kārayantu eṣām pretakāryāṇi sarvaśaḥ
yathā ca anāthavat kiñcit śarīram na vinaśyati
26. bhavantaḥ eṣām pretakāryāṇi sarvaśaḥ kārayantu
ca yathā kiñcit śarīram anāthavat na vinaśyati
26. (Yudhiṣṭhira said to them:) "You all should thoroughly perform the funeral rites for these (deceased), and ensure that no body is neglected or perishes as if it were an orphan's."
शासनाद्धर्मराजस्य क्षत्ता सूतश्च संजयः ।
सुधर्मा धौम्यसहित इन्द्रसेनादयस्तथा ॥२७॥
27. śāsanāddharmarājasya kṣattā sūtaśca saṁjayaḥ ,
sudharmā dhaumyasahita indrasenādayastathā.

27. By the command of Yudhiṣṭhira (dharma-rāja), Vidura, the charioteer Saṃjaya, Sudharman accompanied by Dhaumya, and similarly, those headed by Indrasena (undertook the tasks).
चन्दनागुरुकाष्ठानि तथा कालीयकान्युत ।
घृतं तैलं च गन्धांश्च क्षौमाणि वसनानि च ॥२८॥
28. candanāgurukāṣṭhāni tathā kālīyakānyuta ,
ghṛtaṁ tailaṁ ca gandhāṁśca kṣaumāṇi vasanāni ca.

28. Sandalwood and aloe wood, as well as Kāliyaka woods, ghee, oil, fragrances, and silk cloths and garments.
समाहृत्य महार्हाणि दारूणां चैव संचयान् ।
रथांश्च मृदितांस्तत्र नानाप्रहरणानि च ॥२९॥
29. samāhṛtya mahārhāṇi dārūṇāṁ caiva saṁcayān ,
rathāṁśca mṛditāṁstatra nānāpraharaṇāni ca.

29. Having collected costly heaps of timbers, and also the crushed chariots and various weapons from there.
चिताः कृत्वा प्रयत्नेन यथामुख्यान्नराधिपान् ।
दाहयामासुरव्यग्रा विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥३०॥
30. citāḥ kṛtvā prayatnena yathāmukhyānnarādhipān ,
dāhayāmāsuravyagrā vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā.

30. Having carefully prepared the pyres, they, undisturbed, cremated the foremost kings with rituals prescribed by sacred texts.
दुर्योधनं च राजानं भ्रातॄंश्चास्य शताधिकान् ।
शल्यं शलं च राजानं भूरिश्रवसमेव च ॥३१॥
31. duryodhanaṁ ca rājānaṁ bhrātṝṁścāsya śatādhikān ,
śalyaṁ śalaṁ ca rājānaṁ bhūriśravasameva ca.

31. King Duryodhana and his more than a hundred brothers; Śalya, Śala, and King Bhūriśravas as well.
जयद्रथं च राजानमभिमन्युं च भारत ।
दौःशासनिं लक्ष्मणं च धृष्टकेतुं च पार्थिवम् ॥३२॥
32. jayadrathaṁ ca rājānamabhimanyuṁ ca bhārata ,
dauḥśāsaniṁ lakṣmaṇaṁ ca dhṛṣṭaketuṁ ca pārthivam.
32. jayadratham ca rājānam abhimanyum ca bhārata |
dauḥśāsanīm lakṣmaṇam ca dhṛṣṭaketum ca pārthivam
32. bhārata,
jayadratham rājānam ca,

32. O descendant of Bharata, (among them are) King Jayadratha, Abhimanyu, Lakṣmaṇa (the son of Duḥśāsana), and King Dhṛṣṭaketu.
बृहन्तं सोमदत्तं च सृञ्जयांश्च शताधिकान् ।
राजानं क्षेमधन्वानं विराटद्रुपदौ तथा ॥३३॥
33. bṛhantaṁ somadattaṁ ca sṛñjayāṁśca śatādhikān ,
rājānaṁ kṣemadhanvānaṁ virāṭadrupadau tathā.

33. Also (there are) Bṛhanta, Somadatta, and the Sṛñjayas, who number more than a hundred. Similarly, King Kṣemadhanvan, and Virāṭa and Drupada.
शिखण्डिनं च पाञ्चाल्यं धृष्टद्युम्नं च पार्षतम् ।
युधामन्युं च विक्रान्तमुत्तमौजसमेव च ॥३४॥
34. śikhaṇḍinaṁ ca pāñcālyaṁ dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ ca pārṣatam ,
yudhāmanyuṁ ca vikrāntamuttamaujasameva ca.
34. śikhaṇḍinam ca pāñcālyam dhṛṣṭadyumnam ca pārṣatam
| yudhāmanyum ca vikrāntam uttamaujasam eva ca
34. pāñcālyam śikhaṇḍinam ca,

34. And Śikhaṇḍin, the Pāñcāla prince; and Dhṛṣṭadyumna, son of Pṛṣata; and the valorous Yudhāmanyu; and Uttamaujas himself.
कौसल्यं द्रौपदेयांश्च शकुनिं चापि सौबलम् ।
अचलं वृषकं चैव भगदत्तं च पार्थिवम् ॥३५॥
35. kausalyaṁ draupadeyāṁśca śakuniṁ cāpi saubalam ,
acalaṁ vṛṣakaṁ caiva bhagadattaṁ ca pārthivam.

35. And Kausalya, and the sons of Draupadī, and also Śakuni, son of Subala. Furthermore, there are Acala, Vṛṣaka, and King Bhagadatta.
कर्णं वैकर्तनं चैव सहपुत्रममर्षणम् ।
केकयांश्च महेष्वासांस्त्रिगर्तांश्च महारथान् ॥३६॥
36. karṇaṁ vaikartanaṁ caiva sahaputramamarṣaṇam ,
kekayāṁśca maheṣvāsāṁstrigartāṁśca mahārathān.

36. And indeed, Karna, the son of Vikartana, along with his impatient son, and the Kekayas, who were great archers, as well as the Trigartas, who were mighty charioteers...
घटोत्कचं राक्षसेन्द्रं बकभ्रातरमेव च ।
अलम्बुसं च राजानं जलसंधं च पार्थिवम् ॥३७॥
37. ghaṭotkacaṁ rākṣasendraṁ bakabhrātarameva ca ,
alambusaṁ ca rājānaṁ jalasaṁdhaṁ ca pārthivam.

अन्यांश्च पार्थिवान्राजञ्शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
घृतधाराहुतैर्दीप्तैः पावकैः समदाहयन् ॥३८॥
38. anyāṁśca pārthivānrājañśataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ,
ghṛtadhārāhutairdīptaiḥ pāvakaiḥ samadāhayan.
38. anyān ca pārthivān rājan śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
ghṛtadhārāhutaiḥ dīptaiḥ pāvakaiḥ samadāhayan
38. rājan anyān ca pārthivān śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ

38. O King (rājan), they completely consumed in blazing fires - fed by streams of ghee oblations - hundreds, and then thousands, of other kings.
पितृमेधाश्च केषांचिदवर्तन्त महात्मनाम् ।
सामभिश्चाप्यगायन्त तेऽन्वशोच्यन्त चापरैः ॥३९॥
39. pitṛmedhāśca keṣāṁcidavartanta mahātmanām ,
sāmabhiścāpyagāyanta te'nvaśocyanta cāparaiḥ.
39. pitṛmedhāḥ ca keṣāṃcit avartanta mahātmanām
sāmabhiḥ ca api agāyanta te anvaśocyanta ca aparaiḥ
39. ca keṣāṃcit mahātmanām pitṛmedhāḥ avartanta ca
api sāmabhiḥ agāyanta te ca aparaiḥ anvaśocyanta
39. And for some of those great souls (mahātman), ancestral rites (pitṛmedhāḥ) were performed. They sang with Sāman chants, and others lamented them.
साम्नामृचां च नादेन स्त्रीणां च रुदितस्वनैः ।
कश्मलं सर्वभूतानां निशायां समपद्यत ॥४०॥
40. sāmnāmṛcāṁ ca nādena strīṇāṁ ca ruditasvanaiḥ ,
kaśmalaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ niśāyāṁ samapadyata.
40. sāmnām ṛcām ca nādena strīṇām ca ruditasvanaiḥ
kaśmalam sarvabhūtānām niśāyām samapadyata

40. During the night, a profound bewilderment (kaśmala) arose among all creatures, caused by the chanting of Sāman and Ṛc verses, and by the sounds of women's lamentations.
ते विधूमाः प्रदीप्ताश्च दीप्यमानाश्च पावकाः ।
नभसीवान्वदृश्यन्त ग्रहास्तन्वभ्रसंवृताः ॥४१॥
41. te vidhūmāḥ pradīptāśca dīpyamānāśca pāvakāḥ ,
nabhasīvānvadṛśyanta grahāstanvabhrasaṁvṛtāḥ.
41. te vidhūmāḥ pradīptāḥ ca dīpyamānāḥ ca pāvakāḥ
nabhasī iva anvadṛśyanta grahāḥ tanvabhrasaṃvṛtāḥ

41. Those smokeless, brilliantly blazing, and brightly shining fires appeared in the sky, resembling planets enveloped by thin clouds.
ये चाप्यनाथास्तत्रासन्नानादेशसमागताः ।
तांश्च सर्वान्समानाय्य राशीन्कृत्वा सहस्रशः ॥४२॥
42. ye cāpyanāthāstatrāsannānādeśasamāgatāḥ ,
tāṁśca sarvānsamānāyya rāśīnkṛtvā sahasraśaḥ.
42. ye ca api anāthāḥ tatra āsan nānādeśasamāgatāḥ
tān ca sarvān samānāyya rāśīn kṛtvā sahasraśaḥ
42. ca api ye anāthāḥ tatra nānādeśasamāgatāḥ āsan,
ca tān sarvān samānāyya,
sahasraśaḥ rāśīn kṛtvā
42. And those helpless (anātha) individuals who were present there, having come from diverse regions, Vidura, having gathered all of them, made them into thousands of piles (for proper rites).
चित्वा दारुभिरव्यग्रः प्रभूतैः स्नेहतापितैः ।
दाहयामास विदुरो धर्मराजस्य शासनात् ॥४३॥
43. citvā dārubhiravyagraḥ prabhūtaiḥ snehatāpitaiḥ ,
dāhayāmāsa viduro dharmarājasya śāsanāt.

43. Vidura, unperturbed, piled abundant wood, prepared (lit. "heated") with fats, and cremated them in accordance with the command of Dharmarāja (Yama, the King of natural law).
कारयित्वा क्रियास्तेषां कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
धृतराष्ट्रं पुरस्कृत्य गङ्गामभिमुखोऽगमत् ॥४४॥
44. kārayitvā kriyāsteṣāṁ kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ puraskṛtya gaṅgāmabhimukho'gamat.

44. After causing their rites to be performed, Yudhishthira, the king of the Kurus, went towards the Ganga, with Dhritarashtra leading the way.
