वैशंपायन उवाच ।
निहते राक्षसे तस्मिन्पुनर्नारायणाश्रमम् ।
अभ्येत्य राजा कौन्तेयो निवासमकरोत्प्रभुः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
nihate rākṣase tasminpunarnārāyaṇāśramam ,
abhyetya rājā kaunteyo nivāsamakarotprabhuḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: After that demon was killed, the powerful King, son of Kuntī (Yudhiṣṭhira), returned to Nārāyaṇa's hermitage and established his residence there.
स समानीय तान्सर्वान्भ्रातॄनित्यब्रवीद्वचः ।
द्रौपद्या सहितान्काले संस्मरन्भ्रातरं जयम् ॥२॥
2. sa samānīya tānsarvānbhrātṝnityabravīdvacaḥ ,
draupadyā sahitānkāle saṁsmaranbhrātaraṁ jayam.
2. saḥ samānīya tān sarvān bhrātṝn iti abravīt vacaḥ
draupadyā sahitān kāle saṃsmaran bhrātaram jayam
2. He (Yudhiṣṭhira), having assembled all his brothers along with Draupadī, spoke these words at the opportune moment, remembering his brother Jaya (Arjuna).
समाश्चतस्रोऽभिगताः शिवेन चरतां वने ।
कृतोद्देशश्च बीभत्सुः पञ्चमीमभितः समाम् ॥३॥
3. samāścatasro'bhigatāḥ śivena caratāṁ vane ,
kṛtoddeśaśca bībhatsuḥ pañcamīmabhitaḥ samām.
3. samāḥ catasraḥ abhigatāḥ śivena caratām vane
kṛta uddeśaḥ ca bībhatsuḥ pañcamīm abhitaḥ samām
3. Four years have passed favorably for those who were wandering in the forest. And Arjuna (Bībhatsuḥ) has set his objective, nearing the fifth year.
प्राप्य पर्वतराजानं श्वेतं शिखरिणां वरम् ।
तत्रापि च कृतोद्देशः समागमदिदृक्षुभिः ॥४॥
4. prāpya parvatarājānaṁ śvetaṁ śikhariṇāṁ varam ,
tatrāpi ca kṛtoddeśaḥ samāgamadidṛkṣubhiḥ.
4. prāpya parvatarājānam śvetam śikhariṇām varam
tatra api ca kṛta uddeśaḥ samāgama didṛkṣubhiḥ
4. Having reached Mount Śveta, the best of peaks and king of mountains, he also set his course there, along with those who desired to meet him.
कृतश्च समयस्तेन पार्थेनामिततेजसा ।
पञ्च वर्षाणि वत्स्यामि विद्यार्थीति पुरा मयि ॥५॥
5. kṛtaśca samayastena pārthenāmitatejasā ,
pañca varṣāṇi vatsyāmi vidyārthīti purā mayi.

pañca varṣāṇi vatsyāmi vidyārthī iti purā mayi
5. And a vow was made by that Arjuna (Pārtha) of immeasurable brilliance: 'I shall reside for five years as a student.' This was agreed upon with me in the past.
तत्र गाण्डीवधन्वानमवाप्तास्त्रमरिंदमम् ।
देवलोकादिमं लोकं द्रक्ष्यामः पुनरागतम् ॥६॥
6. tatra gāṇḍīvadhanvānamavāptāstramariṁdamam ,
devalokādimaṁ lokaṁ drakṣyāmaḥ punarāgatam.
6. tatra gāṇḍīvadhanvānam avāptāstram arindamam
devalokāt imam lokam drakṣyāmaḥ punaḥ āgatam
6. There, we shall see the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, who has mastered his weapons, the subduer of enemies, returned to this world from the world of the gods.
इत्युक्त्वा ब्राह्मणान्सर्वानामन्त्रयत पाण्डवः ।
कारणं चैव तत्तेषामाचचक्षे तपस्विनाम् ॥७॥
7. ityuktvā brāhmaṇānsarvānāmantrayata pāṇḍavaḥ ,
kāraṇaṁ caiva tatteṣāmācacakṣe tapasvinām.
7. iti uktvā brāhmaṇān sarvān āmantrayata pāṇḍavaḥ
kāraṇam ca eva tat teṣām ācacakṣe tapasvinām
7. Having spoken thus, the Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira) summoned all the Brahmins. And he explained that very reason to them, the ascetics (tapasvinām).
तमुग्रतपसः प्रीताः कृत्वा पार्थं प्रदक्षिणम् ।
ब्राह्मणास्तेऽन्वमोदन्त शिवेन कुशलेन च ॥८॥
8. tamugratapasaḥ prītāḥ kṛtvā pārthaṁ pradakṣiṇam ,
brāhmaṇāste'nvamodanta śivena kuśalena ca.
8. tam ugratapasaḥ prītāḥ kṛtvā pārtham pradakṣiṇam
brāhmaṇāḥ te anvamodanta śivena kuśalena ca
8. Then, those Brahmins, pleased by his fierce asceticism (tapas), performed a circumambulation (pradakṣiṇam) of Pārtha (Arjuna). They assented (to him) with auspiciousness and well-being.
सुखोदर्कमिमं क्लेशमचिराद्भरतर्षभ ।
क्षत्रधर्मेण धर्मज्ञ तीर्त्वा गां पालयिष्यसि ॥९॥
9. sukhodarkamimaṁ kleśamacirādbharatarṣabha ,
kṣatradharmeṇa dharmajña tīrtvā gāṁ pālayiṣyasi.
9. sukhodarkam imam kleśam acirāt bharatarṣabha
kṣatradharmeṇa dharmajña tīrtvā gām pālayiṣyasi
9. O best among Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), O knower of natural law (dharma), you will soon overcome this suffering, which will ultimately lead to happiness. By upholding your warrior's constitution (dharma), you will then protect the earth.
तत्तु राजा वचस्तेषां प्रतिगृह्य तपस्विनाम् ।
प्रतस्थे सह विप्रैस्तैर्भ्रातृभिश्च परंतपः ॥१०॥
10. tattu rājā vacasteṣāṁ pratigṛhya tapasvinām ,
pratasthe saha vipraistairbhrātṛbhiśca paraṁtapaḥ.
10. tat tu rājā vacaḥ teṣām pratigṛhya tapasvinām
pratasthe saha vipraiḥ taiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ ca paraṃtapaḥ
10. The king, tormentor of enemies (paraṃtapa), having accepted the words of those ascetics, then set out with those brahmins and his brothers.
द्रौपद्या सहितः श्रीमान्हैडिम्बेयादिभिस्तथा ।
राक्षसैरनुयातश्च लोमशेनाभिरक्षितः ॥११॥
11. draupadyā sahitaḥ śrīmānhaiḍimbeyādibhistathā ,
rākṣasairanuyātaśca lomaśenābhirakṣitaḥ.
11. draupadyā sahitaḥ śrīmān haiḍimbeyādi bhiḥ tathā
rākṣasaiḥ anuyātaḥ ca lomaśena abhirakṣitaḥ
11. The glorious king (śrīmān) was accompanied by Draupadi, as well as by Bhima's son (Haiḍimbeya) and others. He was also followed by Rākṣasas and protected by Lomasa.
क्वचिज्जगाम पद्भ्यां तु राक्षसैरुह्यते क्वचित् ।
तत्र तत्र महातेजा भ्रातृभिः सह सुव्रतः ॥१२॥
12. kvacijjagāma padbhyāṁ tu rākṣasairuhyate kvacit ,
tatra tatra mahātejā bhrātṛbhiḥ saha suvrataḥ.
12. kvacit jagāma padbhyām tu rākṣasaiḥ uhyate kvacit
tatra tatra mahātejā bhrātṛbhiḥ saha suvrataḥ
12. Sometimes, he walked on foot, but at other times, he was carried by the Rākṣasas. Here and there, the greatly energetic (mahātejā) and righteous (suvrata) one traveled with his brothers.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा बहून्क्लेशान्विचिन्तयन् ।
सिंहव्याघ्रगजाकीर्णामुदीचीं प्रययौ दिशम् ॥१३॥
13. tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā bahūnkleśānvicintayan ,
siṁhavyāghragajākīrṇāmudīcīṁ prayayau diśam.
13. tataḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ rājā bahūn kleśān vicintayan
siṃhavyāghragajākirṇām udīcīm prayayau diśam
13. Then King Yudhishthira, reflecting on his many troubles, proceeded towards the northern direction, which was crowded with lions, tigers, and elephants.
अवेक्षमाणः कैलासं मैनाकं चैव पर्वतम् ।
गन्धमादनपादांश्च मेरुं चापि शिलोच्चयम् ॥१४॥
14. avekṣamāṇaḥ kailāsaṁ mainākaṁ caiva parvatam ,
gandhamādanapādāṁśca meruṁ cāpi śiloccayam.
14. avekṣamāṇaḥ kailāsam mainākam ca eva parvatam
gandhamādanapādān ca merum ca api śiloccayam
14. He observed Mount Kailasa, Mount Mainaka, and also Mount Meru, that towering mountain, as well as the foothills of Gandhamadana.
उपर्युपरि शैलस्य बह्वीश्च सरितः शिवाः ।
प्रस्थं हिमवतः पुण्यं ययौ सप्तदशेऽहनि ॥१५॥
15. uparyupari śailasya bahvīśca saritaḥ śivāḥ ,
prasthaṁ himavataḥ puṇyaṁ yayau saptadaśe'hani.
15. uparyupari śailasya bahvīḥ ca saritaḥ śivāḥ
prastham himavataḥ puṇyam yayau saptadaśe ahani
15. He observed many auspicious rivers high up on the mountains, and on the seventeenth day, he reached the sacred plateau of the Himalayas.
ददृशुः पाण्डवा राजन्गन्धमादनमन्तिकात् ।
पृष्ठे हिमवतः पुण्ये नानाद्रुमलतायुते ॥१६॥
16. dadṛśuḥ pāṇḍavā rājangandhamādanamantikāt ,
pṛṣṭhe himavataḥ puṇye nānādrumalatāyute.
16. dadṛśuḥ pāṇḍavāḥ rājan gandhamādanam antikāt
pṛṣṭhe himavataḥ puṇye nānādrumalatāyute
16. O King, the Pandavas saw Mount Gandhamadana from nearby, on the sacred side of the Himalayas, which was endowed with various trees and creepers.
सलिलावर्तसंजातैः पुष्पितैश्च महीरुहैः ।
समावृतं पुण्यतममाश्रमं वृषपर्वणः ॥१७॥
17. salilāvartasaṁjātaiḥ puṣpitaiśca mahīruhaiḥ ,
samāvṛtaṁ puṇyatamamāśramaṁ vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ.
17. salilāvartasaṃjātaiḥ puṣpitaiḥ ca mahīruhaiḥ
samāvṛtam puṇyatamam āśramam vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ
17. The most sacred (puṇyatama) hermitage (āśrama) of Vṛṣaparvan was completely surrounded by flowering trees nourished by water eddies.
तमुपक्रम्य राजर्षिं धर्मात्मानमरिंदमाः ।
पाण्डवा वृषपर्वाणमवन्दन्त गतक्लमाः ॥१८॥
18. tamupakramya rājarṣiṁ dharmātmānamariṁdamāḥ ,
pāṇḍavā vṛṣaparvāṇamavandanta gataklamāḥ.
18. tam upakramya rājarṣim dharmātmānam ariṃdamāḥ
pāṇḍavāḥ vṛṣaparvāṇam avandanta gataklamāḥ
18. Having approached that royal sage (rājarṣi) Vṛṣaparvan, a righteous (dharmātman) soul, the Pāṇḍavas, who were subduers of foes (ariṃdama) and now free from weariness, paid homage to him.
अभ्यनन्दत्स राजर्षिः पुत्रवद्भरतर्षभान् ।
पूजिताश्चावसंस्तत्र सप्तरात्रमरिंदमाः ॥१९॥
19. abhyanandatsa rājarṣiḥ putravadbharatarṣabhān ,
pūjitāścāvasaṁstatra saptarātramariṁdamāḥ.
19. abhyanandat sa rājarṣiḥ putravat bharatarṣabhān
pūjitāḥ ca avasan tatra saptarātram ariṃdamāḥ
19. That royal sage (rājarṣi) greeted the foremost of Bhāratas (bharatarṣabha) like sons. And the subduers of foes (ariṃdama), thus honored, resided there for seven nights.
अष्टमेऽहनि संप्राप्ते तमृषिं लोकविश्रुतम् ।
आमन्त्र्य वृषपर्वाणं प्रस्थानं समरोचयन् ॥२०॥
20. aṣṭame'hani saṁprāpte tamṛṣiṁ lokaviśrutam ,
āmantrya vṛṣaparvāṇaṁ prasthānaṁ samarocayan.
20. aṣṭame ahani saṃprāpte tam ṛṣim lokaviśrutam
āmantrya vṛṣaparvāṇam prasthānam samarocayan
20. Upon the arrival of the eighth day, having bid farewell to that world-renowned sage, Vṛṣaparvan, they decided upon their departure.
एकैकशश्च तान्विप्रान्निवेद्य वृषपर्वणे ।
न्यासभूतान्यथाकालं बन्धूनिव सुसत्कृतान् ॥२१॥
21. ekaikaśaśca tānviprānnivedya vṛṣaparvaṇe ,
nyāsabhūtānyathākālaṁ bandhūniva susatkṛtān.
21. ekaikaśaḥ ca tān viprān nivedya vṛṣaparvaṇe
nyāsabhūtāni yathākālam bandhūn iva susatkṛtān
21. And having individually presented those Brahmins to Vṛṣaparvan, along with the entrusted items delivered at the appropriate time, treating the Brahmins as if they were well-honored relatives.
ततस्ते वरवस्त्राणि शुभान्याभरणानि च ।
न्यदधुः पाण्डवास्तस्मिन्नाश्रमे वृषपर्वणः ॥२२॥
22. tataste varavastrāṇi śubhānyābharaṇāni ca ,
nyadadhuḥ pāṇḍavāstasminnāśrame vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ.
22. tataḥ te varavastrāṇi śubhāni ābharaṇāni ca
nyadadhuḥ pāṇḍavāḥ tasmin āśrame vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ
22. Then the Pāṇḍavas deposited excellent garments and beautiful ornaments in that hermitage (āśrama) belonging to Vṛṣaparvan.
अतीतानागते विद्वान्कुशलः सर्वधर्मवित् ।
अन्वशासत्स धर्मज्ञः पुत्रवद्भरतर्षभान् ॥२३॥
23. atītānāgate vidvānkuśalaḥ sarvadharmavit ,
anvaśāsatsa dharmajñaḥ putravadbharatarṣabhān.
23. atītānāgate vidvān kuśalaḥ sarvadharmavit
anvaśāsat saḥ dharmajñaḥ putravat bharatarṣabhān
23. The wise one, skilled and knowing all aspects of natural law (dharma) concerning the past and the future, that knower of natural law (dharma) instructed the foremost of the Bharatas (bharatarṣabhān) as if they were his own sons.
तेऽनुज्ञाता महात्मानः प्रययुर्दिशमुत्तराम् ।
कृष्णया सहिता वीरा ब्राह्मणैश्च महात्मभिः ।
तान्प्रस्थितानन्वगच्छद्वृषपर्वा महीपतिः ॥२४॥
24. te'nujñātā mahātmānaḥ prayayurdiśamuttarām ,
kṛṣṇayā sahitā vīrā brāhmaṇaiśca mahātmabhiḥ ,
tānprasthitānanvagacchadvṛṣaparvā mahīpatiḥ.
24. te anujñātāḥ mahātmānaḥ prayayuḥ
diśam uttarām kṛṣṇayā sahitāḥ vīrāḥ
brāhmaṇaiḥ ca mahātmabhiḥ tān prasthitān
anvagacchat vṛṣaparvā mahīpatiḥ
24. Having received permission, those noble-minded heroes departed towards the northern direction, accompanied by Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) and the great-souled Brahmins. King Vṛṣaparvan followed them as they set out.
उपन्यस्य महातेजा विप्रेभ्यः पाण्डवांस्तदा ।
अनुसंसाध्य कौन्तेयानाशीर्भिरभिनन्द्य च ।
वृषपर्वा निववृते पन्थानमुपदिश्य च ॥२५॥
25. upanyasya mahātejā viprebhyaḥ pāṇḍavāṁstadā ,
anusaṁsādhya kaunteyānāśīrbhirabhinandya ca ,
vṛṣaparvā nivavṛte panthānamupadiśya ca.
25. upanyasya mahātejā viprebhyaḥ
pāṇḍavān tadā anusaṃsādhya kaunteyān
āśīrbhiḥ abhinandya ca vṛṣaparvā
nivavṛte panthānam upadiśya ca
25. Then, the greatly energetic Vṛṣaparvā, having entrusted the Pāṇḍavas to the Brahmins, and having thoroughly consoled the sons of Kuntī and felicitated them with blessings, then returned after showing them the path.
नानामृगगणैर्जुष्टं कौन्तेयः सत्यविक्रमः ।
पदातिर्भ्रातृभिः सार्धं प्रातिष्ठत युधिष्ठिरः ॥२६॥
26. nānāmṛgagaṇairjuṣṭaṁ kaunteyaḥ satyavikramaḥ ,
padātirbhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṁ prātiṣṭhata yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
26. nānāmṛgagaṇaiḥ juṣṭam kaunteyaḥ satyavikramaḥ
padātiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdham prātiṣṭhata yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
26. Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī and one of true valor, set out on foot with his brothers towards a place frequented by various groups of wild animals.
नानाद्रुमनिरोधेषु वसन्तः शैलसानुषु ।
पर्वतं विविशुः श्वेतं चतुर्थेऽहनि पाण्डवाः ॥२७॥
27. nānādrumanirodheṣu vasantaḥ śailasānuṣu ,
parvataṁ viviśuḥ śvetaṁ caturthe'hani pāṇḍavāḥ.
27. nānādrumanirodheṣu vasantaḥ śailasānuṣu
parvatam viviśuḥ śvetam caturthe ahani pāṇḍavāḥ
27. Residing amidst dense groups of various trees and on mountain slopes, the Pāṇḍavas entered the white mountain on the fourth day.
महाभ्रघनसंकाशं सलिलोपहितं शुभम् ।
मणिकाञ्चनरम्यं च शैलं नानासमुच्छ्रयम् ॥२८॥
28. mahābhraghanasaṁkāśaṁ salilopahitaṁ śubham ,
maṇikāñcanaramyaṁ ca śailaṁ nānāsamucchrayam.
28. mahābhravanasaṃkāśam salilopahitam śubham
maṇikāñcanaramyam ca śailam nānāsamucchrayam
28. (They entered) the mountain, which resembled a dense mass of great clouds, was covered with water, was auspicious, delightful with gems and gold, and had various peaks.
ते समासाद्य पन्थानं यथोक्तं वृषपर्वणा ।
अनुसस्रुर्यथोद्देशं पश्यन्तो विविधान्नगान् ॥२९॥
29. te samāsādya panthānaṁ yathoktaṁ vṛṣaparvaṇā ,
anusasruryathoddeśaṁ paśyanto vividhānnagān.
29. te samāsādya panthānam yathoktam vṛṣaparvaṇā
anusasruḥ yathoddeśam paśyantaḥ vividhān nagān
29. Having reached the path as instructed by Vrishaparvan, they followed the directions, observing various mountains.
उपर्युपरि शैलस्य गुहाः परमदुर्गमाः ।
सुदुर्गमांस्ते सुबहून्सुखेनैवाभिचक्रमुः ॥३०॥
30. uparyupari śailasya guhāḥ paramadurgamāḥ ,
sudurgamāṁste subahūnsukhenaivābhicakramuḥ.
30. uparyupari śailasya guhāḥ paramadurgamāḥ
sudurgamān te subahūn sukhena eva abhicakramuḥ
30. Above the mountain, there were caves that were extremely difficult to access. They, however, easily traversed many of those very difficult-to-access places.
धौम्यः कृष्णा च पार्थाश्च लोमशश्च महानृषिः ।
अगमन्सहितास्तत्र न कश्चिदवहीयते ॥३१॥
31. dhaumyaḥ kṛṣṇā ca pārthāśca lomaśaśca mahānṛṣiḥ ,
agamansahitāstatra na kaścidavahīyate.
31. dhaumyaḥ kṛṣṇā ca pārthāḥ ca lomaśaḥ ca mahān
ṛṣiḥ agaman sahitāḥ tatra na kaścit avahīyate
31. Dhaumya, Krishna (Draupadi), the Pandavas, and the great sage Lomasha went there together; no one was left behind.
ते मृगद्विजसंघुष्टं नानाद्विजसमाकुलम् ।
शाखामृगगणैश्चैव सेवितं सुमनोहरम् ॥३२॥
32. te mṛgadvijasaṁghuṣṭaṁ nānādvijasamākulam ,
śākhāmṛgagaṇaiścaiva sevitaṁ sumanoharam.
32. te mṛgadvijasaṃghuṣṭam nānādvijasamākulam
śākhāmṛgagaṇaiḥ ca eva sevitam sumanoharam
32. They encountered a place resounding with deer and birds, bustling with various other birds, frequented by troops of monkeys, and exceedingly beautiful.
पुण्यं पद्मसरोपेतं सपल्वलमहावनम् ।
उपतस्थुर्महावीर्या माल्यवन्तं महागिरिम् ॥३३॥
33. puṇyaṁ padmasaropetaṁ sapalvalamahāvanam ,
upatasthurmahāvīryā mālyavantaṁ mahāgirim.
33. puṇyam padmasaropetam sapalvalamahāvanam
upatasthuḥ mahāvīryāḥ mālyavantam mahāgirim
33. The mighty heroes approached the great mountain Mālyavān, which was sacred, graced with lotus lakes, and abounding in marshes and vast forests.
ततः किंपुरुषावासं सिद्धचारणसेवितम् ।
ददृशुर्हृष्टरोमाणः पर्वतं गन्धमादनम् ॥३४॥
34. tataḥ kiṁpuruṣāvāsaṁ siddhacāraṇasevitam ,
dadṛśurhṛṣṭaromāṇaḥ parvataṁ gandhamādanam.
34. tataḥ kiṃpuruṣāvāsam siddhacāraṇasevitam
dadṛśuḥ hṛṣṭaromāṇaḥ parvatam gandhamādanam
34. Then, their hair bristling with joy, they saw the Gandhamādana mountain, which was the dwelling place of the Kiṃpuruṣas and frequented by Siddhas and Caraṇas.
विद्याधरानुचरितं किंनरीभिस्तथैव च ।
गजसिंहसमाकीर्णमुदीर्णशरभायुतम् ॥३५॥
35. vidyādharānucaritaṁ kiṁnarībhistathaiva ca ,
gajasiṁhasamākīrṇamudīrṇaśarabhāyutam.
35. vidyādharānucaritaṃ kiṃnarībhiḥ tathaiva
ca gajasiṃhasamākīrṇam udīrṇaśarabhāyutam
35. (The mountain was) frequented by Vidyādharas and likewise by Kiṃnarīs; it was crowded with elephants and lions and teeming with roused Śarabhas.
उपेतमन्यैश्च तदा मृगैर्मृदुनिनादिभिः ।
ते गन्धमादनवनं तन्नन्दनवनोपमम् ॥३६॥
36. upetamanyaiśca tadā mṛgairmṛduninādibhiḥ ,
te gandhamādanavanaṁ tannandanavanopamam.
36. upetam anyaiḥ ca tadā mṛgaiḥ mṛdunādinībhiḥ
te gandhamādanavanam tannandanavanopamam
36. (The mountain was) then also populated by other animals making soft sounds. They (the heroes) perceived the Gandhamādana forest, which resembled the celestial Nandanavana.
मुदिताः पाण्डुतनया मनोहृदयनन्दनम् ।
विविशुः क्रमशो वीरा अरण्यं शुभकाननम् ॥३७॥

37. The joyful sons of Pāṇḍu, these heroes, successively entered the forest, a beautiful grove that delighted their minds and hearts.
द्रौपदीसहिता वीरास्तैश्च विप्रैर्महात्मभिः ।
शृण्वन्तः प्रीतिजननान्वल्गून्मदकलाञ्शुभान् ।
श्रोत्ररम्यान्सुमधुराञ्शब्दान्खगमुखेरितान् ॥३८॥
38. draupadīsahitā vīrāstaiśca viprairmahātmabhiḥ ,
śṛṇvantaḥ prītijananānvalgūnmadakalāñśubhān ,
śrotraramyānsumadhurāñśabdānkhagamukheritān.

38. Accompanied by Draupadī and those noble-minded Brahmins, the heroes listened to the very sweet and charming sounds, delightful, auspicious, and pleasing to the ear, which were uttered by the mouths of birds, (and were sometimes) indistinct due to their exhilaration.
सर्वर्तुफलभाराढ्यान्सर्वर्तुकुसुमोज्ज्वलान् ।
पश्यन्तः पादपांश्चापि फलभारावनामितान् ॥३९॥
39. sarvartuphalabhārāḍhyānsarvartukusumojjvalān ,
paśyantaḥ pādapāṁścāpi phalabhārāvanāmitān.

39. They observed trees that were laden with the weight of fruits from all seasons, brilliant with flowers of all seasons, and bowed down by the abundance of their fruit.
आम्रानाम्रातकान्फुल्लान्नारिकेलान्सतिन्दुकान् ।
अजातकांस्तथा जीरान्दाडिमान्बीजपूरकान् ॥४०॥
40. āmrānāmrātakānphullānnārikelānsatindukān ,
ajātakāṁstathā jīrāndāḍimānbījapūrakān.

40. They saw mangoes, hog-plums, and trees in bloom; coconuts, along with tendu fruits, and wild figs; similarly, they saw ripe fruits, pomegranates, and citrons.
पनसाँल्लिकुचान्मोचान्खर्जूरानाम्रवेतसान् ।
पारावतांस्तथा क्षौद्रान्नीपांश्चापि मनोरमान् ॥४१॥
41. panasāँllikucānmocānkharjūrānāmravetasān ,
pārāvatāṁstathā kṣaudrānnīpāṁścāpi manoramān.

41. They saw jackfruit trees, hog plum trees, banana trees, date palm trees, mango trees, and cane plants; also, pārāvata trees, small honey-producing trees, and kadamba trees, all of which were delightful.
बिल्वान्कपित्थाञ्जम्बूंश्च काश्मरीर्बदरीस्तथा ।
प्लक्षानुदुम्बरवटानश्वत्थान्क्षीरिणस्तथा ।
भल्लातकानामलकान्हरीतकबिभीतकान् ॥४२॥
42. bilvānkapitthāñjambūṁśca kāśmarīrbadarīstathā ,
plakṣānudumbaravaṭānaśvatthānkṣīriṇastathā ,
bhallātakānāmalakānharītakabibhītakān.

42. Bilva trees, kapittha trees, jambu trees, and kāśmarī trees, badarī trees, and also plakṣa, udumbara, vaṭa, and aśvattha trees, which are milky; and also bhallātaka trees, āmalaka trees, and harītaka and bibhītaka trees.
इङ्गुदान्करवीरांश्च तिन्दुकांश्च महाफलान् ।
एतानन्यांश्च विविधान्गन्धमादनसानुषु ॥४३॥
43. iṅgudānkaravīrāṁśca tindukāṁśca mahāphalān ,
etānanyāṁśca vividhāngandhamādanasānuṣu.

43. Iṅguda trees, karavīra trees, and tinduka trees - which bear large fruits - these and other various trees are found on the slopes of Gandhamādana (Mountain).
फलैरमृतकल्पैस्तानाचितान्स्वादुभिस्तरून् ।
तथैव चम्पकाशोकान्केतकान्बकुलांस्तथा ॥४४॥
44. phalairamṛtakalpaistānācitānsvādubhistarūn ,
tathaiva campakāśokānketakānbakulāṁstathā.

44. Those trees were laden with sweet, nectar-like fruits. Similarly, there were also champaka trees, aśoka trees, ketaka trees, and bakula trees.
पुंनागान्सप्तपर्णांश्च कर्णिकारान्सकेतकान् ।
पाटलान्कुटजान्रम्यान्मन्दारेन्दीवरांस्तथा ॥४५॥
45. puṁnāgānsaptaparṇāṁśca karṇikārānsaketakān ,
pāṭalānkuṭajānramyānmandārendīvarāṁstathā.

45. Punnaga trees, Saptaparna trees, Karnikara trees, and Ketaka trees; beautiful Patala trees, Kutaja trees, Mandara trees, and Indīvara lotuses were present.
पारिजातान्कोविदारान्देवदारुतरूंस्तथा ।
शालांस्तालांस्तमालांश्च प्रियालान्बकुलांस्तथा ।
शाल्मलीः किंशुकाशोकाञ्शिंशपांस्तरलांस्तथा ॥४६॥
46. pārijātānkovidārāndevadārutarūṁstathā ,
śālāṁstālāṁstamālāṁśca priyālānbakulāṁstathā ,
śālmalīḥ kiṁśukāśokāñśiṁśapāṁstaralāṁstathā.

46. Parijata, Kovidara, and Devadaru trees; Sala, Tala, and Tamala trees; Priyala and Bakula trees; as well as Shalmalī, Kiṃśuka, Ashoka, Shimshapa, and Tarala trees were present.
चकोरैः शतपत्रैश्च भृङ्गराजैस्तथा शुकैः ।
कोकिलैः कलविङ्कैश्च हारीतैर्जीवजीवकैः ॥४७॥
47. cakoraiḥ śatapatraiśca bhṛṅgarājaistathā śukaiḥ ,
kokilaiḥ kalaviṅkaiśca hārītairjīvajīvakaiḥ.

47. The trees were inhabited by Chakora birds, Shatapatra birds, Bhringaraja birds, parrots, cuckoos, Kalavinka birds, Harīta birds, and Jīvajīvaka birds.
प्रियव्रतैश्चातकैश्च तथान्यैर्विविधैः खगैः ।
श्रोत्ररम्यं सुमधुरं कूजद्भिश्चाप्यधिष्ठितान् ॥४८॥
48. priyavrataiścātakaiśca tathānyairvividhaiḥ khagaiḥ ,
śrotraramyaṁ sumadhuraṁ kūjadbhiścāpyadhiṣṭhitān.
48. priyavrataiḥ cātakaiḥ ca tathā anyaiḥ vividhaiḥ khagaiḥ

48. They (the previously mentioned trees and flowers) were inhabited by Priyavrata birds, Chataka birds, and other diverse birds, all of them chirping, creating sounds that were ear-pleasing and very sweet.
सरांसि च विचित्राणि प्रसन्नसलिलानि च ।
कुमुदैः पुण्डरीकैश्च तथा कोकनदोत्पलैः ।
कह्लारैः कमलैश्चैव आचितानि समन्ततः ॥४९॥
49. sarāṁsi ca vicitrāṇi prasannasalilāni ca ,
kumudaiḥ puṇḍarīkaiśca tathā kokanadotpalaiḥ ,
kahlāraiḥ kamalaiścaiva ācitāni samantataḥ.

49. And there were various ponds with clear water, filled all around with white water lilies, white lotuses, as well as red lotuses and utpalas, and also with kahlāra lotuses and other lotuses.
कदम्बैश्चक्रवाकैश्च कुररैर्जलकुक्कुटैः ।
कारण्डवैः प्लवैर्हंसैर्बकैर्मद्गुभिरेव च ।
एतैश्चान्यैश्च कीर्णानि समन्ताज्जलचारिभिः ॥५०॥
50. kadambaiścakravākaiśca kurarairjalakukkuṭaiḥ ,
kāraṇḍavaiḥ plavairhaṁsairbakairmadgubhireva ca ,
etaiścānyaiśca kīrṇāni samantājjalacāribhiḥ.

jalakukkuṭaiḥ kāraṇḍavaiḥ plavaiḥ haṃsaiḥ
bakaiḥ madgubhiḥ eva ca etaiḥ ca

50. And with kadamba birds, chakravāka ducks, ospreys, water hens, kāraṇḍava ducks, plava birds, swans, cranes, and cormorants indeed; with these and other water-dwelling creatures, the ponds were teeming all around.
हृष्टैस्तथा तामरसरसासवमदालसैः ।
पद्मोदरच्युतरजःकिञ्जल्कारुणरञ्जितैः ॥५१॥
51. hṛṣṭaistathā tāmarasarasāsavamadālasaiḥ ,
padmodaracyutarajaḥkiñjalkāruṇarañjitaiḥ.

51. (They were filled with) delighted bees, languid from the intoxication of the nectar from lotuses, and colored reddish by the pollen and filaments fallen from the interiors of lotuses.
मधुरस्वरैर्मधुकरैर्विरुतान्कमलाकरान् ।
पश्यन्तस्ते मनोरम्यान्गन्धमादनसानुषु ॥५२॥
52. madhurasvarairmadhukarairvirutānkamalākarān ,
paśyantaste manoramyāngandhamādanasānuṣu.

52. They, seeing those delightful lotus-ponds resounding with the sweet sounds of bees, on the slopes of Mount Gandhamādana.
तथैव पद्मषण्डैश्च मण्डितेषु समन्ततः ।
शिखण्डिनीभिः सहिताँल्लतामण्डपकेषु च ।
मेघतूर्यरवोद्दाममदनाकुलितान्भृशम् ॥५३॥
53. tathaiva padmaṣaṇḍaiśca maṇḍiteṣu samantataḥ ,
śikhaṇḍinībhiḥ sahitāँllatāmaṇḍapakeṣu ca ,
meghatūryaravoddāmamadanākulitānbhṛśam.

sahitān latāmaṇḍapakeṣu ca

53. Similarly, in places adorned all around with clusters of lotus flowers, and in vine arbors, they (the observers) saw (peacocks implied) accompanied by peahens, greatly agitated by passion due to the mighty trumpet-like sound of the clouds.
कृत्वैव केकामधुरं संगीतमधुरस्वरम् ।
चित्रान्कलापान्विस्तीर्य सविलासान्मदालसान् ।
मयूरान्ददृशुश्चित्रान्नृत्यतो वनलासकान् ॥५४॥
54. kṛtvaiva kekāmadhuraṁ saṁgītamadhurasvaram ,
citrānkalāpānvistīrya savilāsānmadālasān ,
mayūrāndadṛśuścitrānnṛtyato vanalāsakān.

54. They saw colorful peacocks, who were like forest dancers. These peacocks, having just uttered sweet, melodious cries and musical sounds, had spread out their vibrant, graceful, and passion-intoxicated plumage, and were dancing.
कान्ताभिः सहितानन्यानपश्यन्रमतः सुखम् ।
वल्लीलतासंकटेषु कटकेषु स्थितांस्तथा ॥५५॥
55. kāntābhiḥ sahitānanyānapaśyanramataḥ sukham ,
vallīlatāsaṁkaṭeṣu kaṭakeṣu sthitāṁstathā.
55. kāntābhiḥ sahitān anyān apaśyan ramataḥ sukham
vallīlatāsaṅkaṭeṣu kaṭakeṣu sthitān tathā
55. They also saw other creatures (or birds), accompanied by their mates, happily sporting in the dense thickets of creepers and vines, and on the mountain plateaus.
कांश्चिच्छकुनजातांश्च विटपेषूत्कटानपि ।
कलापरचिताटोपान्विचित्रमुकुटानिव ।
विवरेषु तरूणां च मुदितान्ददृशुश्च ते ॥५६॥
56. kāṁścicchakunajātāṁśca viṭapeṣūtkaṭānapi ,
kalāparacitāṭopānvicitramukuṭāniva ,
vivareṣu tarūṇāṁ ca muditāndadṛśuśca te.

utkaṭān api kalāparacitāṭopān
vicitramukuṭān iva vivareṣu
tarūṇām ca muditān dadṛśuḥ ca te
56. They also saw certain kinds of birds, prominent among the branches, who had arranged their plumage into magnificent displays, appearing as if adorned with splendid crowns. And they saw others (birds) joyful within the hollows of the trees.
सिन्धुवारानथोद्दामान्मन्मथस्येव तोमरान् ।
सुवर्णकुसुमाकीर्णान्गिरीणां शिखरेषु च ॥५७॥
57. sindhuvārānathoddāmānmanmathasyeva tomarān ,
suvarṇakusumākīrṇāngirīṇāṁ śikhareṣu ca.
57. sindhuvārān atha uddāmān manmathasya iva tomarān
suvarṇakusumā kīrṇān girīṇām śikhareṣu ca
57. And then, on the mountain peaks, they saw abundant sinduvara trees, laden with golden flowers, which resembled the mighty javelins of the god of love (Manmatha).
कर्णिकारान्विरचितान्कर्णपूरानिवोत्तमान् ।
अथापश्यन्कुरबकान्वनराजिषु पुष्पितान् ।
कामवश्योत्सुककरान्कामस्येव शरोत्करान् ॥५८॥
58. karṇikārānviracitānkarṇapūrānivottamān ,
athāpaśyankurabakānvanarājiṣu puṣpitān ,
kāmavaśyotsukakarānkāmasyeva śarotkarān.

58. Then they saw karṇikāra trees, which appeared like exquisite ear ornaments beautifully arranged. They also saw kurabaka trees blooming in the forest groves, which, like heaps of arrows of the god of love (Kāma), made one eager and captivated by love's influence.
तथैव वनराजीनामुदारान्रचितानिव ।
विराजमानांस्तेऽपश्यंस्तिलकांस्तिलकानिव ॥५९॥
59. tathaiva vanarājīnāmudārānracitāniva ,
virājamānāṁste'paśyaṁstilakāṁstilakāniva.
59. tathā eva vanarājīnām udārān racitān iva
virājamānān te apaśyan tilakān tilakān iva
59. Similarly, they saw splendid tilaka trees in the forest groves, shining as if they were auspicious forehead marks (tilaka) beautifully arranged.
तथानङ्गशराकारान्सहकारान्मनोरमान् ।
अपश्यन्भ्रमरारावान्मञ्जरीभिर्विराजितान् ॥६०॥
60. tathānaṅgaśarākārānsahakārānmanoramān ,
apaśyanbhramarārāvānmañjarībhirvirājitān.
60. tathā anaṅgaśarākārān sahakārān manoramān
apaśyan bhramarārāvān mañjarībhiḥ virājitān
60. And similarly, they saw delightful mango trees (sahakārān) adorned with clusters of blossoms and filled with the humming sounds of bees, appearing like the arrows of the bodiless god of love (Ananga).
हिरण्यसदृशैः पुष्पैर्दावाग्निसदृशैरपि ।
लोहितैरञ्जनाभैश्च वैडूर्यसदृशैरपि ॥६१॥
61. hiraṇyasadṛśaiḥ puṣpairdāvāgnisadṛśairapi ,
lohitairañjanābhaiśca vaiḍūryasadṛśairapi.
61. hiraṇyasadr̥śaiḥ puṣpaiḥ dāvāgnisadr̥śaiḥ api
lohitaiḥ añjanābhāiḥ ca vaiḍūryasadr̥śāiḥ api
61. They saw flowers resembling gold, and also those like a forest fire, as well as red ones, collyrium-black ones, and those like lapis lazuli gems.
तथा शालांस्तमालांश्च पाटल्यो बकुलानि च ।
माला इव समासक्ताः शैलानां शिखरेषु च ॥६२॥
62. tathā śālāṁstamālāṁśca pāṭalyo bakulāni ca ,
mālā iva samāsaktāḥ śailānāṁ śikhareṣu ca.
62. tathā śālān tamālān ca pāṭalyaḥ bakulāni ca
mālāḥ iva samāsaktāḥ śailānām śikhareṣu ca
62. And similarly, sala, tamala, pāṭalī, and bakula trees were intertwined like garlands on the mountain peaks.
एवं क्रमेण ते वीरा वीक्षमाणाः समन्ततः ।
गजसंघसमाबाधं सिंहव्याघ्रसमायुतम् ॥६३॥
63. evaṁ krameṇa te vīrā vīkṣamāṇāḥ samantataḥ ,
gajasaṁghasamābādhaṁ siṁhavyāghrasamāyutam.
63. evam krameṇa te vīrāḥ vīkṣamāṇāḥ samantataḥ
gajasaṁghasamābādham siṁhavyāghrasamāyutam
63. In this manner, those heroes, observing on all sides, saw (the forest) crowded with throngs of elephants and teeming with lions and tigers.
शरभोन्नादसंघुष्टं नानारावनिनादितम् ।
सर्वर्तुफलपुष्पाढ्यं गन्धमादनसानुषु ॥६४॥
64. śarabhonnādasaṁghuṣṭaṁ nānārāvanināditam ,
sarvartuphalapuṣpāḍhyaṁ gandhamādanasānuṣu.

64. (They observed a place) resounding with the calls of śarabhas and vibrant with various other sounds, abundant with fruits and flowers of all seasons, all upon the slopes of Mount Gandhamādana.
पीता भास्वरवर्णाभा बभूवुर्वनराजयः ।
नात्र कण्टकिनः केचिन्नात्र केचिदपुष्पिताः ।
स्निग्धपत्रफला वृक्षा गन्धमादनसानुषु ॥६५॥
65. pītā bhāsvaravarṇābhā babhūvurvanarājayaḥ ,
nātra kaṇṭakinaḥ kecinnātra kecidapuṣpitāḥ ,
snigdhapatraphalā vṛkṣā gandhamādanasānuṣu.

65. The rows of forests turned radiantly yellow. Here, there were no thorny trees, nor any without flowers. On the peaks of Gandhamādana, the trees bore lush leaves and fruits.
विमलस्फटिकाभानि पाण्डुरच्छदनैर्द्विजैः ।
राजहंसैरुपेतानि सारसाभिरुतानि च ।
सरांसि सरितः पार्थाः पश्यन्तः शैलसानुषु ॥६६॥
66. vimalasphaṭikābhāni pāṇḍuracchadanairdvijaiḥ ,
rājahaṁsairupetāni sārasābhirutāni ca ,
sarāṁsi saritaḥ pārthāḥ paśyantaḥ śailasānuṣu.

66. O Pārthas, on the mountain peaks, while seeing the lakes and rivers that shone like pure crystal, adorned with white-winged birds and royal swans, and resounding with the calls of cranes...
पद्मोत्पलविचित्राणि सुखस्पर्शजलानि च ।
गन्धवन्ति च माल्यानि रसवन्ति फलानि च ।
अतीव वृक्षा राजन्ते पुष्पिताः शैलसानुषु ॥६७॥
67. padmotpalavicitrāṇi sukhasparśajalāni ca ,
gandhavanti ca mālyāni rasavanti phalāni ca ,
atīva vṛkṣā rājante puṣpitāḥ śailasānuṣu.

67. And the waters were varied with lotuses and water-lilies, and pleasant to the touch. There were fragrant flowers and juicy fruits. On the mountain peaks, the flowering trees shone with great splendor.
एते चान्ये च बहवस्तत्र काननजा द्रुमाः ।
लताश्च विविधाकाराः पत्रपुष्पफलोच्चयाः ॥६८॥
68. ete cānye ca bahavastatra kānanajā drumāḥ ,
latāśca vividhākārāḥ patrapuṣpaphaloccayāḥ.
68. ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ tatra kānanajāḥ drumāḥ
latāḥ ca vividhākārāḥ patrapuṣpaphaloccayāḥ
68. There were these and many other trees born in the forest. And creepers of various forms, laden with abundant leaves, flowers, and fruits.
युधिष्ठिरस्तु तान्वृक्षान्पश्यमानो नगोत्तमे ।
भीमसेनमिदं वाक्यमब्रवीन्मधुराक्षरम् ॥६९॥
69. yudhiṣṭhirastu tānvṛkṣānpaśyamāno nagottame ,
bhīmasenamidaṁ vākyamabravīnmadhurākṣaram.

bhīmasenam idam vākyam abravīt madhura-akṣaram
69. Yudhiṣṭhira, seeing those trees on the excellent mountain, spoke these sweet words to Bhīmasena.
पश्य भीम शुभान्देशान्देवाक्रीडान्समन्ततः ।
अमानुषगतिं प्राप्ताः संसिद्धाः स्म वृकोदर ॥७०॥
70. paśya bhīma śubhāndeśāndevākrīḍānsamantataḥ ,
amānuṣagatiṁ prāptāḥ saṁsiddhāḥ sma vṛkodara.

70. Behold, Bhīma, the auspicious regions all around, which are the playgrounds of the gods! We have achieved a superhuman state, indeed, we are perfected, O Vṛkodara!
लताभिश्चैव बह्वीभिः पुष्पिताः पादपोत्तमाः ।
संश्लिष्टाः पार्थ शोभन्ते गन्धमादनसानुषु ॥७१॥
71. latābhiścaiva bahvībhiḥ puṣpitāḥ pādapottamāḥ ,
saṁśliṣṭāḥ pārtha śobhante gandhamādanasānuṣu.
71. latābhiḥ ca eva bahvībhiḥ puṣpitāḥ pādapa-uttamāḥ
saṃśliṣṭāḥ pārtha śobhante gandhamādana-sānuṣu
71. And indeed, the excellent trees, blooming and intertwined with many creepers, shine beautifully, O Pārtha, on the slopes of Gandhamādana.
शिखण्डिनीभिश्चरतां सहितानां शिखण्डिनाम् ।
नर्दतां शृणु निर्घोषं भीम पर्वतसानुषु ॥७२॥
72. śikhaṇḍinībhiścaratāṁ sahitānāṁ śikhaṇḍinām ,
nardatāṁ śṛṇu nirghoṣaṁ bhīma parvatasānuṣu.

72. Listen, Bhīma, to the roaring sound of the peacocks (śikhaṇḍin), moving and accompanied by peahens (śikhaṇḍinī), on the mountain slopes.
चकोराः शतपत्राश्च मत्तकोकिलशारिकाः ।
पत्रिणः पुष्पितानेतान्संश्लिष्यन्ति महाद्रुमान् ॥७३॥
73. cakorāḥ śatapatrāśca mattakokilaśārikāḥ ,
patriṇaḥ puṣpitānetānsaṁśliṣyanti mahādrumān.

73. Chakora birds, śatapatra birds, and enamored cuckoos and mynahs - all these birds cling to the blossoming great trees.
रक्तपीतारुणाः पार्थ पादपाग्रगता द्विजाः ।
परस्परमुदीक्षन्ते बहवो जीवजीवकाः ॥७४॥
74. raktapītāruṇāḥ pārtha pādapāgragatā dvijāḥ ,
parasparamudīkṣante bahavo jīvajīvakāḥ.

74. O Pārtha, many red, yellow, and reddish jīvajīvaka birds, perched at the tops of trees, gaze at each other.
हरितारुणवर्णानां शाद्वलानां समन्ततः ।
सारसाः प्रतिदृश्यन्ते शैलप्रस्रवणेष्वपि ॥७५॥
75. haritāruṇavarṇānāṁ śādvalānāṁ samantataḥ ,
sārasāḥ pratidṛśyante śailaprasravaṇeṣvapi.

75. All around, cranes appear in the mountain springs, amidst the green and reddish meadows.
वदन्ति मधुरा वाचः सर्वभूतमनोनुगाः ।
भृङ्गराजोपचक्राश्च लोहपृष्ठाश्च पत्रिणः ॥७६॥
76. vadanti madhurā vācaḥ sarvabhūtamanonugāḥ ,
bhṛṅgarājopacakrāśca lohapṛṣṭhāśca patriṇaḥ.

76. Bhṛṅgarāja birds, upacakra birds, and lohapṛṣṭha birds - these winged creatures utter sweet sounds that are pleasing to the minds of all beings.
चतुर्विषाणाः पद्माभाः कुञ्जराः सकरेणवः ।
एते वैडूर्यवर्णाभं क्षोभयन्ति महत्सरः ॥७७॥
77. caturviṣāṇāḥ padmābhāḥ kuñjarāḥ sakareṇavaḥ ,
ete vaiḍūryavarṇābhaṁ kṣobhayanti mahatsaraḥ.

77. These four-tusked elephants, shining like lotuses, along with their female companions, stir up the great lake whose color resembles that of lapis lazuli.
बहुतालसमुत्सेधाः शैलशृङ्गात्परिच्युताः ।
नानाप्रस्रवणेभ्यश्च वारिधाराः पतन्त्यमूः ॥७८॥
78. bahutālasamutsedhāḥ śailaśṛṅgātparicyutāḥ ,
nānāprasravaṇebhyaśca vāridhārāḥ patantyamūḥ.

78. These streams of water, which are as tall as many palmyra trees, fall from mountain peaks and from various springs.
भास्कराभप्रभा भीम शारदाभ्रघनोपमाः ।
शोभयन्ति महाशैलं नानारजतधातवः ॥७९॥
79. bhāskarābhaprabhā bhīma śāradābhraghanopamāḥ ,
śobhayanti mahāśailaṁ nānārajatadhātavaḥ.

79. O Bhīma, the various silver-colored minerals, with their sun-like radiance and resemblance to autumnal clouds, adorn this mighty mountain.
क्वचिदञ्जनवर्णाभाः क्वचित्काञ्चनसंनिभाः ।
धातवो हरितालस्य क्वचिद्धिङ्गुलकस्य च ॥८०॥
80. kvacidañjanavarṇābhāḥ kvacitkāñcanasaṁnibhāḥ ,
dhātavo haritālasya kvaciddhiṅgulakasya ca.

dhātavaḥ haritālasya kvacit hiṅgulakasya ca
80. In some places, the minerals are dark like collyrium, and in others, they shine like gold. These include ores of orpiment (yellow arsenic) and cinnabar (red mercury sulfide).
मनःशिलागुहाश्चैव संध्याभ्रनिकरोपमाः ।
शशलोहितवर्णाभाः क्वचिद्गैरिकधातवः ॥८१॥
81. manaḥśilāguhāścaiva saṁdhyābhranikaropamāḥ ,
śaśalohitavarṇābhāḥ kvacidgairikadhātavaḥ.

81. And there are caves of realgar (manaḥśilā), resembling masses of evening clouds. In some places, minerals of red ochre (gairika) shine with the color of a hare's blood.
सितासिताभ्रप्रतिमा बालसूर्यसमप्रभाः ।
एते बहुविधाः शैलं शोभयन्ति महाप्रभाः ॥८२॥
82. sitāsitābhrapratimā bālasūryasamaprabhāḥ ,
ete bahuvidhāḥ śailaṁ śobhayanti mahāprabhāḥ.

82. These diverse, greatly resplendent elements, resembling both white and black clouds and possessing the brilliance of the morning sun, adorn the mountain.
गन्धर्वाः सह कान्ताभिर्यथोक्तं वृषपर्वणा ।
दृश्यन्ते शैलशृङ्गेषु पार्थ किंपुरुषैः सह ॥८३॥
83. gandharvāḥ saha kāntābhiryathoktaṁ vṛṣaparvaṇā ,
dṛśyante śailaśṛṅgeṣu pārtha kiṁpuruṣaiḥ saha.
83. gandharvāḥ saha kāntābhiḥ yathā uktam vṛṣaparvaṇā
dṛśyante śailaśṛṅgeṣu pārtha kiṃpuruṣaiḥ saha
83. O Pārtha, Gandharvas, along with their beloved women (kāntā) and Kimpuruṣas, are seen on the mountain peaks, just as Vṛṣaparvan described.
गीतानां तलतालानां यथा साम्नां च निस्वनः ।
श्रूयते बहुधा भीम सर्वभूतमनोहरः ॥८४॥
84. gītānāṁ talatālānāṁ yathā sāmnāṁ ca nisvanaḥ ,
śrūyate bahudhā bhīma sarvabhūtamanoharaḥ.

śrūyate bahudhā bhīma sarvabhūtamanoharaḥ
84. O Bhīma, the captivating sound, delightful to the minds of all beings, from songs and rhythmic hand-claps (tālas) is heard in various ways, just like (the chanting of) Sāman (Vedic hymns).
महागङ्गामुदीक्षस्व पुण्यां देवनदीं शुभाम् ।
कलहंसगणैर्जुष्टामृषिकिंनरसेविताम् ॥८५॥
85. mahāgaṅgāmudīkṣasva puṇyāṁ devanadīṁ śubhām ,
kalahaṁsagaṇairjuṣṭāmṛṣikiṁnarasevitām.
85. mahāgaṅgām udīkṣasva puṇyām devanadīm śubhām
| kalahaṃsagaṇaiḥ juṣṭām ṛṣikiṃnarasevitām
85. Behold the great Gaṅgā, the sacred and auspicious divine river, frequented by multitudes of regal swans and served by sages and Kinnaras.
धातुभिश्च सरिद्भिश्च किंनरैर्मृगपक्षिभिः ।
गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च काननैश्च मनोरमैः ॥८६॥
86. dhātubhiśca saridbhiśca kiṁnarairmṛgapakṣibhiḥ ,
gandharvairapsarobhiśca kānanaiśca manoramaiḥ.
86. dhātubhiḥ ca saridbhiḥ ca kiṃnaraiḥ mṛgapakṣibhiḥ
| gandharvaiḥ apsarobhiḥ ca kānanaiḥ ca manoramaiḥ
86. (Look at the mountain) which is endowed with minerals, rivers, Kinnaras, deer, birds, Gandharvas, Apsarases, and charming forests.
व्यालैश्च विविधाकारैः शतशीर्षैः समन्ततः ।
उपेतं पश्य कौन्तेय शैलराजमरिंदम ॥८७॥
87. vyālaiśca vividhākāraiḥ śataśīrṣaiḥ samantataḥ ,
upetaṁ paśya kaunteya śailarājamariṁdama.

87. O Kaunteya (son of Kuntī), subduer of foes (arimdam), behold the king of mountains, which is all around endowed with manifold, hundred-headed serpents.
ते प्रीतमनसः शूराः प्राप्ता गतिमनुत्तमाम् ।
नातृप्यन्पर्वतेन्द्रस्य दर्शनेन परंतपाः ॥८८॥
88. te prītamanasaḥ śūrāḥ prāptā gatimanuttamām ,
nātṛpyanparvatendrasya darśanena paraṁtapāḥ.
88. te prītamanasaḥ śūrāḥ prāptā gatim anuttamām |
na atṛpyan parvatendrasya darśanena parantapāḥ
88. Those brave warriors, with minds filled with delight, attained a supreme state. O tormentors of foes (parantapaḥ), they were not satiated by the mere sight of the king of mountains.
उपेतमथ माल्यैश्च फलवद्भिश्च पादपैः ।
आर्ष्टिषेणस्य राजर्षेराश्रमं ददृशुस्तदा ॥८९॥
89. upetamatha mālyaiśca phalavadbhiśca pādapaiḥ ,
ārṣṭiṣeṇasya rājarṣerāśramaṁ dadṛśustadā.

ārṣṭiṣeṇasya rājarṣeḥ āśramam dadṛśuḥ tadā
89. Then they saw the hermitage (āśrama) of the royal sage Ārṣṭiṣeṇa, which was filled with garlands and fruit-bearing trees.
ततस्तं तीव्रतपसं कृशं धमनिसंततम् ।
पारगं सर्वधर्माणामार्ष्टिषेणमुपागमन् ॥९०॥
90. tatastaṁ tīvratapasaṁ kṛśaṁ dhamanisaṁtatam ,
pāragaṁ sarvadharmāṇāmārṣṭiṣeṇamupāgaman.
90. tataḥ tam tīvratapasam kṛśam dhamanisaṃtatam
pāragam sarvadharmāṇām ārṣṭiṣeṇam upāgaman
90. Then they approached Ārṣṭiṣeṇa, who was engaged in intense asceticism (tapas), emaciated, with veins prominent, and one who had mastered all natural laws (dharma).
