मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवमेतन्महाबाहो रामेणामिततेजसा ।
प्राप्तं व्यसनमत्युग्रं वनवासकृतं पुरा ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
evametanmahābāho rāmeṇāmitatejasā ,
prāptaṁ vyasanamatyugraṁ vanavāsakṛtaṁ purā.
1. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca evam etat mahābāho rāmeṇa amitatejasā
prāptaṃ vyasanam atyugraṃ vanavāsakṛtaṃ purā
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "O mighty-armed one, thus, this extremely severe misfortune (vyasana), caused by his forest-dwelling, was experienced formerly by Rama of immeasurable prowess."
मा शुचः पुरुषव्याघ्र क्षत्रियोऽसि परंतप ।
बाहुवीर्याश्रये मार्गे वर्तसे दीप्तनिर्णये ॥२॥
2. mā śucaḥ puruṣavyāghra kṣatriyo'si paraṁtapa ,
bāhuvīryāśraye mārge vartase dīptanirṇaye.
2. mā śucaḥ puruṣavyāghra kṣatriyaḥ asi paraṃtapa
bāhuvīryāśraye mārge vartase dīptanirṇaye
2. O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), O tormentor of foes, do not grieve! You are a warrior (kṣatriya) and you are engaged in a glorious path (mārga) that relies on the strength of your arms.
न हि ते वृजिनं किंचिद्दृश्यते परमण्वपि ।
अस्मिन्मार्गे विषीदेयुः सेन्द्रा अपि सुरासुराः ॥३॥
3. na hi te vṛjinaṁ kiṁciddṛśyate paramaṇvapi ,
asminmārge viṣīdeyuḥ sendrā api surāsurāḥ.
3. na hi te vṛjinaṃ kiṃcit dṛśyate paramaṇu api
asmin mārge viṣīdeyuḥ sa-indra api surāsurāḥ
3. Indeed, not even the slightest fault (vṛjina) is seen in you. In this path (mārga), even the gods and asuras, including Indra, would despair.
संहत्य निहतो वृत्रो मरुद्भिर्वज्रपाणिना ।
नमुचिश्चैव दुर्धर्षो दीर्घजिह्वा च राक्षसी ॥४॥
4. saṁhatya nihato vṛtro marudbhirvajrapāṇinā ,
namuciścaiva durdharṣo dīrghajihvā ca rākṣasī.
4. saṃhatya nihataḥ vṛtraḥ marudbhiḥ vajrapāṇinā
namuciḥ ca eva durdharṣaḥ dīrghajihvā ca rākṣasī
4. Vṛtra was killed in a joint effort by the Maruts and by Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt. Even the formidable Namuci and the demoness (rākṣasī) Dīrghajihvā (were also vanquished).
सहायवति सर्वार्थाः संतिष्ठन्तीह सर्वशः ।
किं नु तस्याजितं संख्ये भ्राता यस्य धनंजयः ॥५॥
5. sahāyavati sarvārthāḥ saṁtiṣṭhantīha sarvaśaḥ ,
kiṁ nu tasyājitaṁ saṁkhye bhrātā yasya dhanaṁjayaḥ.
5. sahāyavati sarvārthāḥ saṃtiṣṭhanti iha sarvaśaḥ kim
nu tasya ajitam saṅkhye bhrātā yasya dhanañjayaḥ
5. All objectives are entirely accomplished for one who has assistance. What indeed remains unconquered in battle for him whose brother is Arjuna (Dhanañjaya)?
अयं च बलिनां श्रेष्ठो भीमो भीमपराक्रमः ।
युवानौ च महेष्वासौ यमौ माद्रवतीसुतौ ।
एभिः सहायैः कस्मात्त्वं विषीदसि परंतप ॥६॥
6. ayaṁ ca balināṁ śreṣṭho bhīmo bhīmaparākramaḥ ,
yuvānau ca maheṣvāsau yamau mādravatīsutau ,
ebhiḥ sahāyaiḥ kasmāttvaṁ viṣīdasi paraṁtapa.
6. ayam ca balinām śreṣṭhaḥ bhīmaḥ
bhīmaparākramaḥ yuvānau ca maheṣvāsau
yamau mādravatīsutau ebhiḥ sahāyaiḥ
kasmāt tvam viṣīdasi parantapa
6. And here is Bhīma, the best among the mighty, possessing dreadful valor. And the two young, great archers, the twins, the sons of Mādrī. With such allies, O tormentor of foes (parantapa), why do you despair?
य इमे वज्रिणः सेनां जयेयुः समरुद्गणाम् ।
त्वमप्येभिर्महेष्वासैः सहायैर्देवरूपिभिः ।
विजेष्यसि रणे सर्वानमित्रान्भरतर्षभ ॥७॥
7. ya ime vajriṇaḥ senāṁ jayeyuḥ samarudgaṇām ,
tvamapyebhirmaheṣvāsaiḥ sahāyairdevarūpibhiḥ ,
vijeṣyasi raṇe sarvānamitrānbharatarṣabha.
7. ye ime vajriṇaḥ senām jayeyuḥ
samarudgaṇām tvam api ebhiḥ maheṣvāsaiḥ
sahāyaiḥ devarūpibhiḥ vijeṣyasi
raṇe sarvān amitrān bharatarṣabha
7. These (Pāṇḍavas), who would conquer even the army of the thunderbolt-wielders along with the host of Maruts - you, too, O bull among Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), will conquer all your enemies in battle with these great archers, your allies who are like gods.
इतश्च त्वमिमां पश्य सैन्धवेन दुरात्मना ।
बलिना वीर्यमत्तेन हृतामेभिर्महात्मभिः ॥८॥
8. itaśca tvamimāṁ paśya saindhavena durātmanā ,
balinā vīryamattena hṛtāmebhirmahātmabhiḥ.
8. itaḥ ca tvam imām paśya saindhavena durātmanā
| balinā vīryamattena hṛtām ebhiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
8. Now, observe this woman: she was abducted by the wicked (durātman) Saindhava, who was mighty and arrogant due to his prowess, but then brought back by these great souls (mahātman).
आनीतां द्रौपदीं कृष्णां कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम् ।
जयद्रथं च राजानं विजितं वशमागतम् ॥९॥
9. ānītāṁ draupadīṁ kṛṣṇāṁ kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram ,
jayadrathaṁ ca rājānaṁ vijitaṁ vaśamāgatam.
9. ānītām draupadīm kṛṣṇām kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram
| jayadratham ca rājānam vijitam vaśam āgatam
9. Draupadi (Kṛṣṇā), having been brought back after they performed a very difficult feat (karma), and King Jayadratha, having been defeated and brought under their sway.
असहायेन रामेण वैदेही पुनराहृता ।
हत्वा संख्ये दशग्रीवं राक्षसं भीमविक्रमम् ॥१०॥
10. asahāyena rāmeṇa vaidehī punarāhṛtā ,
hatvā saṁkhye daśagrīvaṁ rākṣasaṁ bhīmavikramam.
10. asahāyena rāmeṇa vaidehī punaḥ āhṛtā | hatvā
saṅkhye daśagrīvam rākṣasam bhīmavikramam
10. Again, Vaidehi (Sītā) was brought back by Rāma, who was without assistance, after he killed in battle Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa), the demon (rakṣasa) of terrible prowess.
यस्य शाखामृगा मित्रा ऋक्षाः कालमुखास्तथा ।
जात्यन्तरगता राजन्नेतद्बुद्ध्यानुचिन्तय ॥११॥
11. yasya śākhāmṛgā mitrā ṛkṣāḥ kālamukhāstathā ,
jātyantaragatā rājannetadbuddhyānucintaya.
11. yasya śākhāmṛgāḥ mitrāḥ ṛkṣāḥ kālamukhāḥ tathā
| jātyantaragatāḥ rājan etat buddhyā anucintaya
11. Whose allies were monkeys (śākhāmṛga) and black-faced bears (ṛkṣa), though they belonged to a different species (jātyantaragata) - O King, ponder this with your intellect (buddhi).
तस्मात्त्वं कुरुशार्दूल मा शुचो भरतर्षभ ।
त्वद्विधा हि महात्मानो न शोचन्ति परंतप ॥१२॥
12. tasmāttvaṁ kuruśārdūla mā śuco bharatarṣabha ,
tvadvidhā hi mahātmāno na śocanti paraṁtapa.
12. tasmāt tvam kuruśārdūla mā śucaḥ bharatarṣabha
tvadvidhāḥ hi mahātmānaḥ na śocanti paraṃtapa
12. Therefore, O tiger among the Kurus, O bull among the Bharatas, do not grieve. Indeed, great souls (mahātman), those like you, O tormentor of foes, do not mourn.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमाश्वासितो राजा मार्कण्डेयेन धीमता ।
त्यक्त्वा दुःखमदीनात्मा पुनरेवेदमब्रवीत् ॥१३॥
13. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamāśvāsito rājā mārkaṇḍeyena dhīmatā ,
tyaktvā duḥkhamadīnātmā punarevedamabravīt.
13. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca evam āśvāsitaḥ rājā mārkaṇḍeyena
dhīmatā tyaktvā duḥkham adīnātmā punar eva idam abravīt
13. Vaiśampāyana said: Thus comforted by the wise Mārkaṇḍeya, the king (Yudhiṣṭhira), whose spirit (ātman) was undepressed, abandoned his sorrow and spoke this again.
