बृहतीं धार्तराष्ट्राणां दृष्ट्वा सेनां समुद्यताम् ।
विषादमगमद्राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
bṛhatīṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ dṛṣṭvā senāṁ samudyatām ,
viṣādamagamadrājā kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.

1. Sanjaya said: Having seen the vast army of the sons of Dhritarashtra, ready for battle, King Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, became dejected (viṣāda).
व्यूहं भीष्मेण चाभेद्यं कल्पितं प्रेक्ष्य पाण्डवः ।
अभेद्यमिव संप्रेक्ष्य विषण्णोऽर्जुनमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. vyūhaṁ bhīṣmeṇa cābhedyaṁ kalpitaṁ prekṣya pāṇḍavaḥ ,
abhedyamiva saṁprekṣya viṣaṇṇo'rjunamabravīt.
2. vyūham bhīṣmeṇa ca abhedyam kalpitam prekṣya pāṇḍavaḥ
abhedyam iva samprekṣya viṣaṇṇaḥ arjunam abravīt
2. pāṇḍavaḥ bhīṣmeṇa kalpitam abhedyam vyūham prekṣya,
abhedyam iva samprekṣya ca viṣaṇṇaḥ arjunam abravīt
2. Observing the impenetrable battle array expertly formed by Bhishma, and realizing it was indeed formidable, Yudhishthira became despondent and spoke to Arjuna.
धनंजय कथं शक्यमस्माभिर्योद्धुमाहवे ।
धार्तराष्ट्रैर्महाबाहो येषां योद्धा पितामहः ॥३॥
3. dhanaṁjaya kathaṁ śakyamasmābhiryoddhumāhave ,
dhārtarāṣṭrairmahābāho yeṣāṁ yoddhā pitāmahaḥ.
3. dhanaṃjaya katham śakyam asmābhiḥ yoddhum āhave
dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ mahābāho yeṣām yodhā pitāmahaḥ
3. dhanaṃjaya mahābāho,
yeṣām pitāmahaḥ yodhā,
asmābhiḥ āhave dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ katham yoddhum śakyam?
3. O Dhananjaya, O mighty-armed one, how can we possibly fight in this battle against the sons of Dhritarashtra, when their leading warrior is our own revered grandfather?
अक्षोभ्योऽयमभेद्यश्च भीष्मेणामित्रकर्शिना ।
कल्पितः शास्त्रदृष्टेन विधिना भूरितेजसा ॥४॥
4. akṣobhyo'yamabhedyaśca bhīṣmeṇāmitrakarśinā ,
kalpitaḥ śāstradṛṣṭena vidhinā bhūritejasā.
4. akṣobhyaḥ ayam abhedyaḥ ca bhīṣmeṇa amitrakarśinā
kalpitaḥ śāstradṛṣṭena vidhinā bhūritejasā
4. ayam akṣobhyaḥ ca abhedyaḥ amitrakarśinā
bhūritejasā bhīṣmeṇa śāstradṛṣṭena vidhinā kalpitaḥ
4. This battle array, unshakeable and impenetrable, has been designed by Bhishma, who devastates his foes and possesses immense prowess (tejas), according to the methods prescribed in the scriptures.
ते वयं संशयं प्राप्ताः ससैन्याः शत्रुकर्शन ।
कथमस्मान्महाव्यूहादुद्यानं नो भविष्यति ॥५॥
5. te vayaṁ saṁśayaṁ prāptāḥ sasainyāḥ śatrukarśana ,
kathamasmānmahāvyūhādudyānaṁ no bhaviṣyati.
5. te vayam saṃśayam prāptāḥ sasainyāḥ śatrukarśana
katham asmāt mahāvyūhāt udyānam naḥ bhaviṣyati
5. śatrukarśana,
te vayam sasainyāḥ saṃśayam prāptāḥ,
asmāt mahāvyūhāt naḥ udyānam katham bhaviṣyati?
5. O destroyer of foes (Arjuna), we, with our entire army, have fallen into a state of profound uncertainty and danger. How will we find a way out (udyāna) from this formidable great battle array (mahāvyūha)?
अथार्जुनोऽब्रवीत्पार्थं युधिष्ठिरममित्रहा ।
विषण्णमभिसंप्रेक्ष्य तव राजन्ननीकिनीम् ॥६॥
6. athārjuno'bravītpārthaṁ yudhiṣṭhiramamitrahā ,
viṣaṇṇamabhisaṁprekṣya tava rājannanīkinīm.
6. atha arjunaḥ abravīt pārtham yudhiṣṭhiram amitrahā
viṣaṇṇam abhisamprekṣya tava rājan anīkinīm
6. atha amitrahā arjunaḥ viṣaṇṇam pārtham yudhiṣṭhiram
tava rājan anīkinīm abhisamprekṣya abravīt
6. Then Arjuna, the slayer of enemies, having thoroughly observed your army, O King (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), and having seen Pārtha Yudhiṣṭhira in a dejected state, spoke to him.
प्रज्ञयाभ्यधिकाञ्शूरान्गुणयुक्तान्बहूनपि ।
जयन्त्यल्पतरा येन तन्निबोध विशां पते ॥७॥
7. prajñayābhyadhikāñśūrānguṇayuktānbahūnapi ,
jayantyalpatarā yena tannibodha viśāṁ pate.
7. prajñayā abhyadhikān śūrān guṇayuktān bahūn api
jayanti alpatarāḥ yena tat nibodha viśām pate
7. yena alpatarāḥ prajñayā abhyadhikān śūrān guṇayuktān bahūn api jayanti,
tat viśām pate nibodha
7. O ruler of the people (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), understand this: how those who are fewer in number can conquer even many valiant ones who are superior (in number or strength) and endowed with all good qualities, simply through (superior) intelligence.
तत्तु ते कारणं राजन्प्रवक्ष्याम्यनसूयवे ।
नारदस्तमृषिर्वेद भीष्मद्रोणौ च पाण्डव ॥८॥
8. tattu te kāraṇaṁ rājanpravakṣyāmyanasūyave ,
nāradastamṛṣirveda bhīṣmadroṇau ca pāṇḍava.
8. tat tu te kāraṇam rājan pravakṣyāmi anasūyave
nāradaḥ tam ṛṣiḥ veda bhīṣmadroṇau ca pāṇḍava
8. rājan,
anasūyave te tat kāraṇam tu pravakṣyāmi.
pāṇḍava,
tam ṛṣiḥ nāradaḥ ca bhīṣmadroṇau veda.
8. O King (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), I shall indeed explain that reason to you, who are not prone to fault-finding. (Arjuna then says to Yudhiṣṭhira): O Pāṇḍava, the sage Nārada knows that (reason), and so do Bhīṣma and Droṇa.
एतमेवार्थमाश्रित्य युद्धे देवासुरेऽब्रवीत् ।
पितामहः किल पुरा महेन्द्रादीन्दिवौकसः ॥९॥
9. etamevārthamāśritya yuddhe devāsure'bravīt ,
pitāmahaḥ kila purā mahendrādīndivaukasaḥ.
9. etam eva artham āśritya yuddhe devāsure abravīt
pitāmahaḥ kila purā mahendrādīn divaukasaḥ
9. purā kila pitāmahaḥ devāsure yuddhe etam eva
artham āśritya mahendrādīn divaukasaḥ abravīt
9. Indeed, in ancient times, the Grandfather (Brahmā), taking this very subject matter as his basis, spoke to Mahendra (Indra) and the other gods (divaukasaḥ) during the battle between the gods and asuras.
न तथा बलवीर्याभ्यां विजयन्ते जिगीषवः ।
यथा सत्यानृशंस्याभ्यां धर्मेणैवोद्यमेन च ॥१०॥
10. na tathā balavīryābhyāṁ vijayante jigīṣavaḥ ,
yathā satyānṛśaṁsyābhyāṁ dharmeṇaivodyamena ca.
10. na tathā balavīryābhyām vijayante jigīṣavaḥ
yathā satyānṛśaṃsyābhyām dharmeṇa eva udyamena ca
10. jigīṣavaḥ balavīryābhyām tathā na vijayante
yathā satyānṛśaṃsyābhyām dharmeṇa eva udyamena ca
10. Those who desire to conquer do not achieve victory primarily through strength and valor, but rather through truth, compassion, natural law (dharma), and diligent effort.
त्यक्त्वाधर्मं च लोभं च मोहं चोद्यममास्थिताः ।
युध्यध्वमनहंकारा यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ॥११॥
11. tyaktvādharmaṁ ca lobhaṁ ca mohaṁ codyamamāsthitāḥ ,
yudhyadhvamanahaṁkārā yato dharmastato jayaḥ.
11. tyaktvā adharmaṃ ca lobhaṃ ca mohaṃ ca udyamam āsthitāḥ
yudhyadhvam anahaṃkārāḥ yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
11. adharmaṃ ca lobhaṃ ca mohaṃ ca tyaktvā udyamam āsthitāḥ
anahaṃkārāḥ yudhyadhvam yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
11. Having relinquished unrighteousness (adharma), greed, and delusion, and having firmly established yourselves in effort, fight without ego (ahaṃkāra). For where there is natural law (dharma), there is victory.
एवं राजन्विजानीहि ध्रुवोऽस्माकं रणे जयः ।
यथा मे नारदः प्राह यतः कृष्णस्ततो जयः ॥१२॥
12. evaṁ rājanvijānīhi dhruvo'smākaṁ raṇe jayaḥ ,
yathā me nāradaḥ prāha yataḥ kṛṣṇastato jayaḥ.
12. evaṃ rājan vijānīhi dhruvaḥ asmākam raṇe jayaḥ
yathā me nāradaḥ prāha yataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
12. rājan evaṃ vijānīhi asmākam raṇe dhruvaḥ jayaḥ
yathā nāradaḥ me prāha yataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
12. O King, know this: our victory in battle is assured, just as Nārada told me, "Where Krishna is, there is victory."
गुणभूतो जयः कृष्णे पृष्ठतोऽन्वेति माधवम् ।
अन्यथा विजयश्चास्य संनतिश्चापरो गुणः ॥१३॥
13. guṇabhūto jayaḥ kṛṣṇe pṛṣṭhato'nveti mādhavam ,
anyathā vijayaścāsya saṁnatiścāparo guṇaḥ.
13. guṇabhūtaḥ jayaḥ kṛṣṇe pṛṣṭhataḥ anveti mādhavam
anyathā vijayaḥ ca asya saṃnatiḥ ca aparaḥ guṇaḥ
13. kṛṣṇe mādhavam jayaḥ guṇabhūtaḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ anveti
anyathā asya vijayaḥ ca saṃnatiḥ ca aparaḥ guṇaḥ
13. Victory is inherently a quality of Krishna; it always accompanies Madhava. If it were not so, his victory and also his humility (saṃnati) would be considered merely another of his attributes.
अनन्ततेजा गोविन्दः शत्रुपूगेषु निर्व्यथः ।
पुरुषः सनातनतमो यतः कृष्णस्ततो जयः ॥१४॥
14. anantatejā govindaḥ śatrupūgeṣu nirvyathaḥ ,
puruṣaḥ sanātanatamo yataḥ kṛṣṇastato jayaḥ.
14. anantatejāḥ govindaḥ śatrupūgeṣu nirvyathaḥ
puruṣaḥ sanātanatamaḥ yataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
14. anantatejāḥ govindaḥ sanātanatamaḥ puruṣaḥ
śatrupūgeṣu nirvyathaḥ yataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
14. Govinda possesses infinite splendor and is fearless among hordes of enemies. He is the most ancient (sanātana) Person (puruṣa). Therefore, where Krishna is present, there is victory.
पुरा ह्येष हरिर्भूत्वा वैकुण्ठोऽकुण्ठसायकः ।
सुरासुरानवस्फूर्जन्नब्रवीत्के जयन्त्विति ॥१५॥
15. purā hyeṣa harirbhūtvā vaikuṇṭho'kuṇṭhasāyakaḥ ,
surāsurānavasphūrjannabravītke jayantviti.
15. purā hi eṣaḥ hariḥ bhūtvā vaikuṇṭhaḥ akuṇṭhasāyakaḥ
surāsurān avasphūrjan abravīt ke jayantu iti
15. purā hi eṣaḥ hariḥ bhūtvā vaikuṇṭhaḥ akuṇṭhasāyakaḥ
surāsurān avasphūrjan "ke jayantu" iti abravīt
15. Indeed, in ancient times, this very Hari (Vishnu), who is Vaikuṇṭha and possesses unfailing arrows, thundered forth to the gods and demons and asked, "Who shall conquer?"
अनु कृष्णं जयेमेति यैरुक्तं तत्र तैर्जितम् ।
तत्प्रसादाद्धि त्रैलोक्यं प्राप्तं शक्रादिभिः सुरैः ॥१६॥
16. anu kṛṣṇaṁ jayemeti yairuktaṁ tatra tairjitam ,
tatprasādāddhi trailokyaṁ prāptaṁ śakrādibhiḥ suraiḥ.
16. anu kṛṣṇaṃ jayema iti yaiḥ uktam tatra taiḥ jitam
tatprasādāt hi trailokyaṃ prāptam śakrādibhiḥ suraiḥ
16. yaiḥ "anu kṛṣṇaṃ jayema" iti uktam,
tatra taiḥ jitam hi tatprasādāt śakrādibhiḥ suraiḥ trailokyaṃ prāptam
16. Those who said, "Let us conquer following Krishna," indeed achieved victory there. It was by His (Krishna's) grace that the three worlds were obtained by Indra (śakra) and the other gods.
तस्य ते न व्यथां कांचिदिह पश्यामि भारत ।
यस्य ते जयमाशास्ते विश्वभुक्त्रिदशेश्वरः ॥१७॥
17. tasya te na vyathāṁ kāṁcidiha paśyāmi bhārata ,
yasya te jayamāśāste viśvabhuktridaśeśvaraḥ.
17. tasya te na vyathāṃ kāṃcid iha paśyāmi bhārata
yasya te jayam āśāste viśvabhuk tridaśeśvaraḥ
17. bhārata,
iha tasya te kāṃcid vyathāṃ na paśyāmi yasya te viśvabhuk tridaśeśvaraḥ jayam āśāste
17. O Bhārata, I see no distress whatsoever for you, for whom the sustainer of the universe, the Lord of the gods (Viśvabhuk Tridaśeśvara – referring to Krishna), desires victory.
