वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः प्रयातः कौशिक्याः पाण्डवो जनमेजय ।
आनुपूर्व्येण सर्वाणि जगामायतनान्युत ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ prayātaḥ kauśikyāḥ pāṇḍavo janamejaya ,
ānupūrvyeṇa sarvāṇi jagāmāyatanānyuta.

1. Vaiśampayana said: O Janamejaya, the Pāṇḍava, having then departed from the Kauśikī river, indeed visited all the holy abodes in due order.
स सागरं समासाद्य गङ्गायाः संगमे नृप ।
नदीशतानां पञ्चानां मध्ये चक्रे समाप्लवम् ॥२॥
2. sa sāgaraṁ samāsādya gaṅgāyāḥ saṁgame nṛpa ,
nadīśatānāṁ pañcānāṁ madhye cakre samāplavam.
2. saḥ sāgaram samāsādya gaṅgāyāḥ saṅgame nṛpa
nadīśatānām pañcānām madhye cakre samāplavam
2. Having reached the ocean, O King, at the confluence of the Gaṅgā, he performed a complete ceremonial bath (samāplava) amidst five hundred rivers.
ततः समुद्रतीरेण जगाम वसुधाधिपः ।
भ्रातृभिः सहितो वीरः कलिङ्गान्प्रति भारत ॥३॥
3. tataḥ samudratīreṇa jagāma vasudhādhipaḥ ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito vīraḥ kaliṅgānprati bhārata.

3. Then the king, that hero, accompanied by his brothers, journeyed along the seashore towards the Kaliṅga country, O descendant of Bharata (bhārata).
लोमश उवाच ।
एते कलिङ्गाः कौन्तेय यत्र वैतरणी नदी ।
यत्रायजत धर्मोऽपि देवाञ्शरणमेत्य वै ॥४॥
4. lomaśa uvāca ,
ete kaliṅgāḥ kaunteya yatra vaitaraṇī nadī ,
yatrāyajata dharmo'pi devāñśaraṇametya vai.

nadī yatra ayajata dharmaḥ api devān śaraṇam etya vai
4. Lomaśa said: O son of Kuntī (Kaunteya), these are the Kalingas, where the river Vaitaraṇī flows. It is also where Dharma himself (dharma), having taken refuge with the gods, performed sacrifices.
ऋषिभिः समुपायुक्तं यज्ञियं गिरिशोभितम् ।
उत्तरं तीरमेतद्धि सततं द्विजसेवितम् ॥५॥
5. ṛṣibhiḥ samupāyuktaṁ yajñiyaṁ giriśobhitam ,
uttaraṁ tīrametaddhi satataṁ dvijasevitam.
5. ṛṣibhiḥ samupāyuktam yajñiyam giriśobhitam
uttaram tīram etat hi satatam dvijasevitam
5. This place, well-used by sages, is suitable for Vedic ritual (yajña) and adorned by mountains. This northern bank is indeed constantly frequented by brahmins (dvija).
समेन देवयानेन पथा स्वर्गमुपेयुषः ।
अत्र वै ऋषयोऽन्येऽपि पुरा क्रतुभिरीजिरे ॥६॥
6. samena devayānena pathā svargamupeyuṣaḥ ,
atra vai ṛṣayo'nye'pi purā kratubhirījire.
6. samena devayānena pathā svargam upeyuṣaḥ atra
vai ṛṣayaḥ anye api purā kratubhiḥ ījire
6. This is the place of those who attained heaven (svarga) by the straight path of the gods (devayāna). Here, indeed, other sages also performed sacrifices (kratu) in ancient times.
अत्रैव रुद्रो राजेन्द्र पशुमादत्तवान्मखे ।
रुद्रः पशुं मानवेन्द्र भागोऽयमिति चाब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. atraiva rudro rājendra paśumādattavānmakhe ,
rudraḥ paśuṁ mānavendra bhāgo'yamiti cābravīt.
7. atra eva rudraḥ rājendra paśum ādattavān makhe
rudraḥ paśum mānavendra bhāgaḥ ayam iti ca abravīt
7. O king (rājendra), it was right here that Rudra took an animal offering during a sacrifice (makha). O lord of men (mānavendra), Rudra also declared, 'This is my share.'
हृते पशौ तदा देवास्तमूचुर्भरतर्षभ ।
मा परस्वमभिद्रोग्धा मा धर्मान्सकलान्नशीः ॥८॥
8. hṛte paśau tadā devāstamūcurbharatarṣabha ,
mā parasvamabhidrogdhā mā dharmānsakalānnaśīḥ.
8. hṛte paśau tadā devāḥ tam ūcuḥ bharatarṣabha |
mā parasvam abhidrogdhā mā dharmān sakalān naśīḥ
8. O best of Bharatas, when the animal was stolen, the gods then said to him: "Do not steal others' property, and do not violate all natural laws (dharma)."
ततः कल्याणरूपाभिर्वाग्भिस्ते रुद्रमस्तुवन् ।
इष्ट्या चैनं तर्पयित्वा मानयां चक्रिरे तदा ॥९॥
9. tataḥ kalyāṇarūpābhirvāgbhiste rudramastuvan ,
iṣṭyā cainaṁ tarpayitvā mānayāṁ cakrire tadā.
9. tataḥ kalyāṇarūpābhiḥ vāgbhiḥ te rudram astuvan
| iṣṭyā ca enam tarpayitvā mānayām cakrire tadā
9. Thereupon, they praised Rudra with auspicious words, and having satisfied him with an offering, they then honored him.
ततः स पशुमुत्सृज्य देवयानेन जग्मिवान् ।
अत्रानुवंशो रुद्रस्य तं निबोध युधिष्ठिर ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ sa paśumutsṛjya devayānena jagmivān ,
atrānuvaṁśo rudrasya taṁ nibodha yudhiṣṭhira.
10. tataḥ saḥ paśum utsṛjya devayānena jagmivān |
atra anuvamśaḥ rudrasya tam nibodha yudhiṣṭhira
10. Then, having released the animal, he (Rudra) departed by the divine path. O Yudhiṣṭhira, now understand the lineage of Rudra here.
अयातयामं सर्वेभ्यो भागेभ्यो भागमुत्तमम् ।
देवाः संकल्पयामासुर्भयाद्रुद्रस्य शाश्वतम् ॥११॥
11. ayātayāmaṁ sarvebhyo bhāgebhyo bhāgamuttamam ,
devāḥ saṁkalpayāmāsurbhayādrudrasya śāśvatam.
11. ayātayāmam sarvebhyaḥ bhāgebhyaḥ bhāgam uttamam
| devāḥ saṅkalpayāmāsuḥ bhayāt rudrasya śāśvatam
11. From all shares, the gods, out of fear of Rudra, determined an excellent, imperishable, and eternal share for him.
इमां गाथामत्र गायन्नपः स्पृशति यो नरः ।
देवयानस्तस्य पन्थाश्चक्षुश्चैव प्रकाशते ॥१२॥
12. imāṁ gāthāmatra gāyannapaḥ spṛśati yo naraḥ ,
devayānastasya panthāścakṣuścaiva prakāśate.
12. imām gāthām atra gāyan apaḥ spṛśati yaḥ naraḥ
devayānaḥ tasya panthāḥ cakṣuḥ ca eva prakāśate
12. The person (nara) who recites this verse here and touches water, his path to the gods (devayāna) and his vision become clear.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो वैतरणीं सर्वे पाण्डवा द्रौपदी तथा ।
अवतीर्य महाभागा तर्पयां चक्रिरे पितॄन् ॥१३॥
13. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato vaitaraṇīṁ sarve pāṇḍavā draupadī tathā ,
avatīrya mahābhāgā tarpayāṁ cakrire pitṝn.
13. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ vaitaraṇīm sarve pāṇḍavāḥ
draupadī tathā avatīrya mahābhāgā tarpayām cakrire pitṝn
13. Vaiśampayana said: Then, all the highly esteemed Pāṇḍavas and Draupadī, having descended into the Vaitaraṇī river, offered oblations to their forefathers.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
उपस्पृश्यैव भगवन्नस्यां नद्यां तपोधन ।
मानुषादस्मि विषयादपेतः पश्य लोमश ॥१४॥
14. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
upaspṛśyaiva bhagavannasyāṁ nadyāṁ tapodhana ,
mānuṣādasmi viṣayādapetaḥ paśya lomaśa.
14. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca upaspṛśya eva bhagavan asyām nadyām
tapodhana mānuṣāt asmi viṣayāt apetaḥ paśya lomaśa
14. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'O venerable (bhagavan) ascetic (tapodhana), just by touching the water in this river, I am freed from the human realm (viṣaya). Behold, O Lomaśa!'
सर्वाँल्लोकान्प्रपश्यामि प्रसादात्तव सुव्रत ।
वैखानसानां जपतामेष शब्दो महात्मनाम् ॥१५॥
15. sarvāँllokānprapaśyāmi prasādāttava suvrata ,
vaikhānasānāṁ japatāmeṣa śabdo mahātmanām.
15. sarvān lokān prapaśyāmi prasādāt tava suvrata
vaikhānasānām japatām eṣaḥ śabdaḥ mahātmanām
15. O virtuous one (suvrata), by your grace, I behold all the worlds. This sound is of the Vaikhānasa ascetics and other great souls (mahātman) who are chanting.
लोमश उवाच ।
त्रिशतं वै सहस्राणि योजनानां युधिष्ठिर ।
यत्र ध्वनिं शृणोष्येनं तूष्णीमास्स्व विशां पते ॥१६॥
16. lomaśa uvāca ,
triśataṁ vai sahasrāṇi yojanānāṁ yudhiṣṭhira ,
yatra dhvaniṁ śṛṇoṣyenaṁ tūṣṇīmāssva viśāṁ pate.
16. lomaśa uvāca triśatam vai sahasrāṇi yojanānām yudhiṣṭhira
yatra dhvanim śṛṇoṣi enam tūṣṇīm āssva viśām pate
16. Lomaśa said: O Yudhiṣṭhira, the place from which you hear this sound is indeed three hundred thousand yojanas away. O lord of men, remain silent.
एतत्स्वयंभुवो राजन्वनं रम्यं प्रकाशते ।
यत्रायजत कौन्तेय विश्वकर्मा प्रतापवान् ॥१७॥
17. etatsvayaṁbhuvo rājanvanaṁ ramyaṁ prakāśate ,
yatrāyajata kaunteya viśvakarmā pratāpavān.
17. etat svayam-bhuvaḥ rājan vanam ramyam prakāśate
yatra ayajat kaunteya viśva-karmā pratāpavān
17. rājan kaunteya etat svayam-bhuvaḥ ramyam vanam
prakāśate yatra pratāpavān viśva-karmā ayajat
17. O King, this beautiful forest of Svayambhu (the self-existent one) shines brightly. It is here, O son of Kuntī, that the mighty Viśvakarmā performed Vedic rituals (yajña).
यस्मिन्यज्ञे हि भूर्दत्ता कश्यपाय महात्मने ।
सपर्वतवनोद्देशा दक्षिणा वै स्वयंभुवा ॥१८॥
18. yasminyajñe hi bhūrdattā kaśyapāya mahātmane ,
saparvatavanoddeśā dakṣiṇā vai svayaṁbhuvā.
18. yasmin yajñe hi bhūḥ dattā kaśyapāya mahātmane
sa-parvata-vanoddeśā dakṣiṇā vai svayaṃbhuvā
18. hi svayaṃbhuvā yasmin yajñe sa-parvata-vanoddeśā
bhūḥ dakṣiṇā mahātmane kaśyapāya vai dattā
18. Indeed, in that Vedic ritual (yajña), the earth, complete with its mountains and forest regions, was given as a ceremonial gift (dakṣiṇā) by Svayambhū (Brahma) to the great-souled Kaśyapa.
अवासीदच्च कौन्तेय दत्तमात्रा मही तदा ।
उवाच चापि कुपिता लोकेश्वरमिदं प्रभुम् ॥१९॥
19. avāsīdacca kaunteya dattamātrā mahī tadā ,
uvāca cāpi kupitā lokeśvaramidaṁ prabhum.
19. avāsīdat ca kaunteya dattamātrā mahī tadā
uvāca ca api kupitā lokeśvaram idam prabhum
19. And then, O son of Kuntī, the Earth (mahī), immediately after being given, sank down. And being angry, she also spoke these words to the Lord of the worlds, her master.
न मां मर्त्याय भगवन्कस्मैचिद्दातुमर्हसि ।
प्रदानं मोघमेतत्ते यास्याम्येषा रसातलम् ॥२०॥
20. na māṁ martyāya bhagavankasmaiciddātumarhasi ,
pradānaṁ moghametatte yāsyāmyeṣā rasātalam.
20. na mām martyāya bhagavan kasmaicit dātum arhasi
pradānam mogham etat te yāsyāmi eṣā rasātalam
20. O revered one, you should not give me to any mortal whatsoever. This gift of yours would be futile. I myself will go to the netherworld (Rasātala).
विषीदन्तीं तु तां दृष्ट्वा कश्यपो भगवानृषिः ।
प्रसादयां बभूवाथ ततो भूमिं विशां पते ॥२१॥
21. viṣīdantīṁ tu tāṁ dṛṣṭvā kaśyapo bhagavānṛṣiḥ ,
prasādayāṁ babhūvātha tato bhūmiṁ viśāṁ pate.
21. viṣīdantīm tu tām dṛṣṭvā kaśyapaḥ bhagavān ṛṣiḥ
prasādayām babhūva atha tataḥ bhūmim viśām pate
21. But, having seen her distressed, the revered sage Kaśyapa then propitiated the Earth (Bhūmi), O lord of the people.
ततः प्रसन्ना पृथिवी तपसा तस्य पाण्डव ।
पुनरुन्मज्ज्य सलिलाद्वेदीरूपा स्थिता बभौ ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ prasannā pṛthivī tapasā tasya pāṇḍava ,
punarunmajjya salilādvedīrūpā sthitā babhau.
22. tataḥ prasannā pṛthivī tapasā tasya pāṇḍava
punaḥ unmajya salilāt vedīrūpā sthitā babhau
22. Then, O Pāṇḍava, the Earth (Pṛthivī) was pleased by his penance (tapas). Having emerged again from the waters, she appeared shining in the form of an altar (vedī).
सैषा प्रकाशते राजन्वेदी संस्थानलक्षणा ।
आरुह्यात्र महाराज वीर्यवान्वै भविष्यसि ॥२३॥
23. saiṣā prakāśate rājanvedī saṁsthānalakṣaṇā ,
āruhyātra mahārāja vīryavānvai bhaviṣyasi.
23. sā eṣā prakāśate rājan vedī saṃsthānalakṣaṇā
āruhya atra mahārāja vīryavān vai bhaviṣyasi
23. O King, this (Earth) now shines, bearing the distinctive mark of an altar (vedī). Having ascended here, O Great King, you will surely become powerful and valiant.
अहं च ते स्वस्त्ययनं प्रयोक्ष्ये यथा त्वमेनामधिरोक्ष्यसेऽद्य ।
स्पृष्टा हि मर्त्येन ततः समुद्रमेषा वेदी प्रविशत्याजमीढ ॥२४॥
24. ahaṁ ca te svastyayanaṁ prayokṣye; yathā tvamenāmadhirokṣyase'dya ,
spṛṣṭā hi martyena tataḥ samudra;meṣā vedī praviśatyājamīḍha.
24. ahaṃ ca te svastyayanaṃ prayokṣye
yathā tvam enām adhirokṣyase
adya | spṛṣṭā hi martyena tataḥ
samudram eṣā vedī praviśati ājamiḍha
24. I will perform an auspicious rite (svastyayana) for you so that you may ascend this (altar) today. Indeed, O Ajamiḍha, if this altar is touched by a mortal, it then enters the ocean.
अग्निर्मित्रो योनिरापोऽथ देव्यो विष्णो रेतस्त्वममृतस्य नाभिः ।
एवं ब्रुवन्पाण्डव सत्यवाक्यं वेदीमिमां त्वं तरसाधिरोह ॥२५॥
25. agnirmitro yonirāpo'tha devyo; viṣṇo retastvamamṛtasya nābhiḥ ,
evaṁ bruvanpāṇḍava satyavākyaṁ; vedīmimāṁ tvaṁ tarasādhiroha.
25. agniḥ mitraḥ yoniḥ āpaḥ atha devyaḥ
viṣṇoḥ retas tvam amṛtasya nābhiḥ
| evaṃ bruvan pāṇḍava satyavākyaṃ
vedīm imām tvaṃ tarasā adhiroha
25. Proclaiming this truthful statement - 'You are Fire, Mitra, the source, the Waters, and the goddesses; you are the seed of Viṣṇu (viṣṇu), and the navel of immortality (amṛta)' - O Pāṇḍava, you must swiftly ascend this altar.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः कृतस्वस्त्ययनो महात्मा युधिष्ठिरः सागरगामगच्छत् ।
कृत्वा च तच्छासनमस्य सर्वं महेन्द्रमासाद्य निशामुवास ॥२६॥
26. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ kṛtasvastyayano mahātmā; yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sāgaragāmagacchat ,
kṛtvā ca tacchāsanamasya sarvaṁ; mahendramāsādya niśāmuvāsa.
26. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca | tataḥ kṛtasvastyayanaḥ
mahātmā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sāgaragām
agacchat | kṛtvā ca tat śāsanam
asya sarvaṃ mahendram āsādya niśām uvāsa
26. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, after the auspicious rite (svastyayana) was performed, the great-souled Yudhiṣṭhira proceeded to the ocean-bound river (Gaṅgā). Having completely fulfilled the sage's instructions, he reached Mount Mahendra and spent the night there.
