संजय उवाच ।
ततो दुर्योधनो द्रोणमभिगम्येदमब्रवीत् ।
अमर्षवशमापन्नो जनयन्हर्षतेजसी ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tato duryodhano droṇamabhigamyedamabravīt ,
amarṣavaśamāpanno janayanharṣatejasī.

1. Sañjaya said: Then Duryodhana, having approached Droṇa, spoke this, overcome by indignation and displaying fierce resolve and spirit.
न मर्षणीयाः संग्रामे विश्रमन्तः श्रमान्विताः ।
सपत्ना ग्लानमनसो लब्धलक्ष्या विशेषतः ॥२॥
2. na marṣaṇīyāḥ saṁgrāme viśramantaḥ śramānvitāḥ ,
sapatnā glānamanaso labdhalakṣyā viśeṣataḥ.
2. na marṣaṇīyāḥ saṅgrāme viśramantaḥ śramānvitāḥ
sapatnāḥ glānamanasaḥ labdhalakṣyāḥ viśeṣataḥ
2. saṅgrāme na marṣaṇīyāḥ sapatnāḥ viśramantaḥ

2. In battle, these enemies, even when resting and overcome by fatigue, must not be tolerated. This is particularly true for those who, despite being weary-minded, have achieved their objectives.
तत्तु मर्षितमस्माभिर्भवतः प्रियकाम्यया ।
त एते परिविश्रान्ताः पाण्डवा बलवत्तराः ॥३॥
3. tattu marṣitamasmābhirbhavataḥ priyakāmyayā ,
ta ete pariviśrāntāḥ pāṇḍavā balavattarāḥ.
3. tat tu marṣitam asmābhiḥ bhavataḥ priyakāmyayā
ta ete pariviśrāntāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ balavattarāḥ
3. asmābhiḥ bhavataḥ priyakāmyayā tat tu marṣitam
ta ete pāṇḍavāḥ pariviśrāntāḥ balavattarāḥ
3. However, that (past offense) was endured by us out of a desire for your well-being. But now, these Pāṇḍavas, having rested completely, have become much stronger.
सर्वथा परिहीनाः स्म तेजसा च बलेन च ।
भवता पाल्यमानास्ते विवर्धन्ते पुनः पुनः ॥४॥
4. sarvathā parihīnāḥ sma tejasā ca balena ca ,
bhavatā pālyamānāste vivardhante punaḥ punaḥ.

bhavatā pālyamānāḥ te vivardhante punaḥ punaḥ
4. sarvathā tejasā ca balena ca (vayam) parihīnāḥ

4. In every way, we were lacking in splendor and strength. But those (Pāṇḍavas), being protected by you, are continuously increasing (in power).
दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि सर्वाणि ब्रह्मास्त्रादीनि यान्यपि ।
तानि सर्वाणि तिष्ठन्ति भवत्येव विशेषतः ॥५॥
5. divyānyastrāṇi sarvāṇi brahmāstrādīni yānyapi ,
tāni sarvāṇi tiṣṭhanti bhavatyeva viśeṣataḥ.
5. divyāni astrāṇi sarvāṇi brahmāstrādīni yāni api
tāni sarvāṇi tiṣṭhanti bhavati eva viśeṣataḥ
5. yāni api divyāni brahmāstrādīni sarvāṇi astrāṇi,
tāni sarvāṇi viśeṣataḥ bhavati eva tiṣṭhanti
5. All divine weapons, even those like the Brahmāstra, all of them reside particularly in you.
न पाण्डवेया न वयं नान्ये लोके धनुर्धराः ।
युध्यमानस्य ते तुल्याः सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥६॥
6. na pāṇḍaveyā na vayaṁ nānye loke dhanurdharāḥ ,
yudhyamānasya te tulyāḥ satyametadbravīmi te.
6. na pāṇḍaveyāḥ na vayam na anye loke dhanurdharāḥ
yudhyamānasya te tulyāḥ satyam etat bravīmi te
6. pāṇḍaveyāḥ na,
vayam na,
loke anye dhanurdharāḥ na (api),
te yudhyamānasya tulyāḥ (santi) etat satyam te bravīmi
6. Neither the Pāṇḍavas, nor we, nor any other archers in the world are equal to you when you are fighting. This truth I tell to you.
ससुरासुरगन्धर्वानिमाँल्लोकान्द्विजोत्तम ।
सर्वास्त्रविद्भवान्हन्याद्दिव्यैरस्त्रैर्न संशयः ॥७॥
7. sasurāsuragandharvānimāँllokāndvijottama ,
sarvāstravidbhavānhanyāddivyairastrairna saṁśayaḥ.
7. sa-sura-asura-gandharvān imān lokān dvijottama
sarvāstra-vit bhavān hanyāt divyaiḥ astraiḥ na saṃśayaḥ
7. dvijottama sarvāstra-vit bhavān divyaiḥ astraiḥ
sa-sura-asura-gandharvān imān lokān hanyāt na saṃśayaḥ
7. O best among the twice-born (dvijottama), you are an expert in all weapons and could undoubtedly vanquish these worlds—along with their gods, asuras, and gandharvas—using divine weapons.
स भवान्मर्षयत्येनांस्त्वत्तो भीतान्विशेषतः ।
शिष्यत्वं वा पुरस्कृत्य मम वा मन्दभाग्यताम् ॥८॥
8. sa bhavānmarṣayatyenāṁstvatto bhītānviśeṣataḥ ,
śiṣyatvaṁ vā puraskṛtya mama vā mandabhāgyatām.
8. sa bhavān marṣayati enān tvattaḥ bhītān viśeṣataḥ
| śiṣyatvam vā puraskṛtya mama vā mandabhāgyatām
8. sa bhavān tvattaḥ viśeṣataḥ bhītān enān marṣayati
vā śiṣyatvam puraskṛtya vā mama mandabhāgyatām
8. You, sir, tolerate these (your opponents), especially those who are afraid of you, either because you respect their status as your disciples or due to my own ill-fortune.
एवमुद्धर्षितो द्रोणः कोपितश्चात्मजेन ते ।
समन्युरब्रवीद्राजन्दुर्योधनमिदं वचः ॥९॥
9. evamuddharṣito droṇaḥ kopitaścātmajena te ,
samanyurabravīdrājanduryodhanamidaṁ vacaḥ.
9. evam uddharṣitaḥ droṇaḥ kopitaḥ ca ātmajena te
| sa-manyuḥ abravīt rājan duryodhanam idam vacaḥ
9. rājan evam uddharṣitaḥ ca ātmajena te kopitaḥ
sa-manyuḥ droṇaḥ duryodhanam idam vacaḥ abravīt
9. Thus encouraged and simultaneously enraged by your son, Drona, filled with indignation, spoke these words to Duryodhana, O King.
स्थविरः सन्परं शक्त्या घटे दुर्योधनाहवे ।
अतः परं मया कार्यं क्षुद्रं विजयगृद्धिना ।
अनस्त्रविदयं सर्वो हन्तव्योऽस्त्रविदा जनः ॥१०॥
10. sthaviraḥ sanparaṁ śaktyā ghaṭe duryodhanāhave ,
ataḥ paraṁ mayā kāryaṁ kṣudraṁ vijayagṛddhinā ,
anastravidayaṁ sarvo hantavyo'stravidā janaḥ.
10. sthaviraḥ san param śaktyā ghaṭe
duryodhanāhave | ataḥ param mayā kāryam
kṣudram vijaya-gṛddhinā | anastra-vit
ayam sarvaḥ hantavyaḥ astra-vidā janaḥ
10. sthaviraḥ san aham duryodhanāhave param
śaktyā ghaṭe ataḥ param vijaya-gṛddhinā mayā
kṣudram kāryam (asti) ayam sarvaḥ
anastra-vit janaḥ astra-vidā hantavyaḥ (asti)
10. Even though I am old, I will fight to the utmost of my ability in this battle (āhava) for Duryodhana. After this, I, greedy for victory, must perform a petty task: this entire populace, being ignorant of weapons, must be slain by one who knows weapons.
यद्भवान्मन्यते चापि शुभं वा यदि वाशुभम् ।
तद्वै कर्तास्मि कौरव्य वचनात्तव नान्यथा ॥११॥
11. yadbhavānmanyate cāpi śubhaṁ vā yadi vāśubham ,
tadvai kartāsmi kauravya vacanāttava nānyathā.
11. yat bhavān manyate ca api śubham vā yadi vā aśubham
tat vai kartā asmi kauravya vacanāt tava na anyathā
11. kauravya,
yat śubham vā yadi vā aśubham bhavān api manyate,
tat vai tava vacanāt kartā asmi,
na anyathā.
11. O descendant of Kuru (Kauravya), whatever you deem auspicious or inauspicious, I shall certainly do that according to your word, and not otherwise.
निहत्य सर्वपाञ्चालान्युद्धे कृत्वा पराक्रमम् ।
विमोक्ष्ये कवचं राजन्सत्येनायुधमालभे ॥१२॥
12. nihatya sarvapāñcālānyuddhe kṛtvā parākramam ,
vimokṣye kavacaṁ rājansatyenāyudhamālabhe.
12. nihatya sarva-pāñcālān yuddhe kṛtvā parākramam
vimokṣye kavacam rājan satyena āyudham ālabhe
12. rājan,
yuddhe sarva-pāñcālān nihatya,
parākramam kṛtvā,
vimokṣye kavacam,
satyena āyudham ālabhe.
12. O king, having slain all the Pāñcālas in battle, and having displayed my valor, I shall cast off my armor and, by my truth (satya), take up arms.
मन्यसे यच्च कौन्तेयमर्जुनं श्रान्तमाहवे ।
तस्य वीर्यं महाबाहो शृणु सत्येन कौरव ॥१३॥
13. manyase yacca kaunteyamarjunaṁ śrāntamāhave ,
tasya vīryaṁ mahābāho śṛṇu satyena kaurava.
13. manyase yat ca kaunteyam arjunam śrāntam āhave
tasya vīryam mahābāho śṛṇu satyena kaurava
13. mahābāho kaurava,
yat ca kaunteyam arjunam āhave śrāntam manyase,
tasya vīryam satyena śṛṇu.
13. O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), and O descendant of Kuru (Kaurava), whatever you consider Arjuna, the son of Kuntī (Kaunteya), to be weary in battle—listen to his valor (vīrya) truthfully.
तं न देवा न गन्धर्वा न यक्षा न च राक्षसाः ।
उत्सहन्ते रणे सोढुं कुपितं सव्यसाचिनम् ॥१४॥
14. taṁ na devā na gandharvā na yakṣā na ca rākṣasāḥ ,
utsahante raṇe soḍhuṁ kupitaṁ savyasācinam.
14. tam na devāḥ na gandharvāḥ na yakṣāḥ na ca rākṣasāḥ
utsahante raṇe soḍhum kupitam savyasācinam
14. na devāḥ,
na gandharvāḥ,
na yakṣāḥ,
ca na rākṣasāḥ,
tam kupitam savyasācinam raṇe soḍhum utsahante.
14. Neither the gods, nor the Gandharvas, nor the Yakshas, nor even the Rakshasas are able to withstand him, the enraged Savyasācin, in battle.
खाण्डवे येन भगवान्प्रत्युद्यातः सुरेश्वरः ।
सायकैर्वारितश्चापि वर्षमाणो महात्मना ॥१५॥
15. khāṇḍave yena bhagavānpratyudyātaḥ sureśvaraḥ ,
sāyakairvāritaścāpi varṣamāṇo mahātmanā.
15. khāṇḍave yena bhagavān pratyudyātaḥ sureśvaraḥ
sāyakaiḥ vāritaḥ ca api varṣamāṇaḥ mahātmanā
15. yena mahātmanā khāṇḍave bhagavān sureśvaraḥ
pratyudyātaḥ ca api varṣamāṇaḥ sāyakaiḥ vāritaḥ
15. In the Khāṇḍava forest, the revered lord of gods, Indra, was confronted by him (Arjuna). Even while raining (showers), he was obstructed by the arrows of that great-souled one.
यक्षा नागास्तथा दैत्या ये चान्ये बलगर्विताः ।
निहताः पुरुषेन्द्रेण तच्चापि विदितं तव ॥१६॥
16. yakṣā nāgāstathā daityā ye cānye balagarvitāḥ ,
nihatāḥ puruṣendreṇa taccāpi viditaṁ tava.
16. yakṣāḥ nāgāḥ tathā daityāḥ ye ca anye balagarvitāḥ
nihatāḥ puruṣendreṇa tat ca api viditaṃ tava
16. yakṣāḥ nāgāḥ tathā daityāḥ ye ca anye balagarvitāḥ
puruṣendreṇa nihatāḥ tat ca api tava viditam
16. The Yakshas, Nagas, and Daityas, as well as other beings proud of their strength, were slain by that foremost among men (puruṣa) (Arjuna). And that, too, is known to you.
गन्धर्वा घोषयात्रायां चित्रसेनादयो जिताः ।
यूयं तैर्ह्रियमाणाश्च मोक्षिता दृढधन्वना ॥१७॥
17. gandharvā ghoṣayātrāyāṁ citrasenādayo jitāḥ ,
yūyaṁ tairhriyamāṇāśca mokṣitā dṛḍhadhanvanā.
17. gandharvāḥ ghoṣayātrāyāṃ citrasenādayaḥ jitāḥ
yūyaṃ taiḥ hriyamāṇāḥ ca mokṣitāḥ dṛḍhadhanvanā
17. ghoṣayātrāyāṃ citrasenādayaḥ gandharvāḥ jitāḥ
taiḥ hriyamāṇāḥ ca yūyam dṛḍhadhanvanā mokṣitāḥ
17. The Gandharvas, including Citrasena and others, were defeated in the cattle-herding festival (ghoṣayātrā). When you were being abducted by them, you were liberated by the one with the firm bow (Arjuna).
निवातकवचाश्चापि देवानां शत्रवस्तथा ।
सुरैरवध्याः संग्रामे तेन वीरेण निर्जिताः ॥१८॥
18. nivātakavacāścāpi devānāṁ śatravastathā ,
surairavadhyāḥ saṁgrāme tena vīreṇa nirjitāḥ.
18. nivātakavacāḥ ca api devānāṃ śatravaḥ tathā
suraiḥ avadhyāḥ saṃgrāme tena vīreṇa nirjitāḥ
18. devānām śatravaḥ tathā suraiḥ saṃgrāme avadhyāḥ
ca api nivātakavacāḥ tena vīreṇa nirjitāḥ
18. And also the Nivātakavachas, who were the enemies of the gods and unconquerable by the gods in battle, were vanquished by that hero.
दानवानां सहस्राणि हिरण्यपुरवासिनाम् ।
विजिग्ये पुरुषव्याघ्रः स शक्यो मानुषैः कथम् ॥१९॥
19. dānavānāṁ sahasrāṇi hiraṇyapuravāsinām ,
vijigye puruṣavyāghraḥ sa śakyo mānuṣaiḥ katham.
19. dānavānām sahasrāṇi hiraṇyapuravāsinām vijigye
puruṣavyāghraḥ sa śakyaḥ mānuṣaiḥ katham
19. sa puruṣavyāghraḥ hiraṇyapuravāsinām dānavānām
sahasrāṇi vijigye mānuṣaiḥ katham śakyaḥ
19. He, that tiger among men, conquered thousands of demons dwelling in Hiraṇyapura. How can he possibly be conquered by ordinary men?
प्रत्यक्षं चैव ते सर्वं यथा बलमिदं तव ।
क्षपितं पाण्डुपुत्रेण चेष्टतां नो विशां पते ॥२०॥
20. pratyakṣaṁ caiva te sarvaṁ yathā balamidaṁ tava ,
kṣapitaṁ pāṇḍuputreṇa ceṣṭatāṁ no viśāṁ pate.
20. pratyakṣam ca eva te sarvam yathā balam idam tava
kṣapitam pāṇḍuputreṇa ceṣṭatām naḥ viśām pate
20. viśām pate te tava idam sarvam balam yathā
pāṇḍuputreṇa kṣapitam ca eva pratyakṣam naḥ ceṣṭatām
20. Indeed, all this strength of yours is directly visible, how it has been consumed by the son of Pāṇḍu. So let them strive against us, O lord of the people!
तं तथाभिप्रशंसन्तमर्जुनं कुपितस्तदा ।
द्रोणं तव सुतो राजन्पुनरेवेदमब्रवीत् ॥२१॥
21. taṁ tathābhipraśaṁsantamarjunaṁ kupitastadā ,
droṇaṁ tava suto rājanpunarevedamabravīt.
21. tam tathā abhipraśaṃsantam arjunam kupitaḥ tadā
droṇam tava sutaḥ rājan punaḥ eva idam abravīt
21. rājan tadā tava sutaḥ kupitaḥ tathā arjunam
abhipraśaṃsantam droṇam punaḥ eva idam abravīt
21. Then, O king, your son, enraged, again said this to Droṇa, who was thus praising Arjuna.
अहं दुःशासनः कर्णः शकुनिर्मातुलश्च मे ।
हनिष्यामोऽर्जुनं संख्ये द्वैधीकृत्याद्य भारतीम् ॥२२॥
22. ahaṁ duḥśāsanaḥ karṇaḥ śakunirmātulaśca me ,
haniṣyāmo'rjunaṁ saṁkhye dvaidhīkṛtyādya bhāratīm.
22. aham duḥśāsanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniḥ mātulaḥ ca me
haniṣyāmaḥ arjunam saṃkhye dvaidhīkṛtya adya bhāratīm
22. adya aham duḥśāsanaḥ karṇaḥ ca me mātulaḥ śakuniḥ
bhāratīm dvaidhīkṛtya saṃkhye arjunam haniṣyāmaḥ
22. I, Duḥśāsana, Karṇa, and my maternal uncle Śakuni, we shall kill Arjuna in battle today, after splitting the Bhārata forces.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा भारद्वाजो हसन्निव ।
अन्ववर्तत राजानं स्वस्ति तेऽस्त्विति चाब्रवीत् ॥२३॥
23. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā bhāradvājo hasanniva ,
anvavartata rājānaṁ svasti te'stviti cābravīt.
23. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā bhāradvājaḥ hasan iva
anvavartata rājānam svasti te astu iti ca abravīt
23. bhāradvājaḥ tasya tat vacanam śrutvā hasan iva
rājānam anvavartata ca te svasti astu iti abravīt
23. Hearing his words, Bhāradvāja, as if smiling, followed the king and said, "May there be welfare (svasti) for you!"
को हि गाण्डीवधन्वानं ज्वलन्तमिव तेजसा ।
अक्षयं क्षपयेत्कश्चित्क्षत्रियः क्षत्रियर्षभम् ॥२४॥
24. ko hi gāṇḍīvadhanvānaṁ jvalantamiva tejasā ,
akṣayaṁ kṣapayetkaścitkṣatriyaḥ kṣatriyarṣabham.
24. kaḥ hi gāṇḍīvadhanvānam jvalantam iva tejasā
akṣayam kṣapayet kaścit kṣatriyaḥ kṣatriyarṣabham
24. hi kaḥ kaścit kṣatriyaḥ tejasā jvalantam iva
akṣayam kṣatriyarṣabham gāṇḍīvadhanvānam kṣapayet
24. Indeed, what warrior (kṣatriya) could destroy Arjuna (gāṇḍīvadhanvān), who is like a blazing fire in his radiance (tejas), that unconquerable best among warriors?
तं न वित्तपतिर्नेन्द्रो न यमो न जलेश्वरः ।
नासुरोरगरक्षांसि क्षपयेयुः सहायुधम् ॥२५॥
25. taṁ na vittapatirnendro na yamo na jaleśvaraḥ ,
nāsuroragarakṣāṁsi kṣapayeyuḥ sahāyudham.
25. tam na vittapatiḥ na indraḥ na yamaḥ na jaleśvaraḥ
na asura uraga rakṣāṃsi kṣapayeyuḥ saha āyudham
25. vittapatiḥ na indraḥ na yamaḥ na jaleśvaraḥ na
asura uraga rakṣāṃsi tam saha āyudham kṣapayeyuḥ
25. Neither the lord of wealth (vittapati), nor Indra, nor Yama, nor the lord of waters (jaleśvara) – neither `asuras`, `uragas` (serpents), nor `rakṣasas` – could destroy him along with his weapons.
मूढास्त्वेतानि भाषन्ते यानीमान्यात्थ भारत ।
युद्धे ह्यर्जुनमासाद्य स्वस्तिमान्को व्रजेद्गृहान् ॥२६॥
26. mūḍhāstvetāni bhāṣante yānīmānyāttha bhārata ,
yuddhe hyarjunamāsādya svastimānko vrajedgṛhān.
26. mūḍhāḥ tu etāni bhāṣante yāni imāni āttha bhārata
yuddhe hi arjunam āsādya svastimān kaḥ vrajet gṛhān
26. bhārata mūḍhāḥ tu etāni imāni yāni āttha bhāṣante
hi yuddhe arjunam āsādya kaḥ svastimān gṛhān vrajet
26. Indeed, foolish people (mūḍhas) speak these things that you are uttering now, O Bhārata. Who, after encountering Arjuna in battle, could return home safely (svastimān)?
त्वं तु सर्वातिशङ्कित्वान्निष्ठुरः पापनिश्चयः ।
श्रेयसस्त्वद्धिते युक्तांस्तत्तद्वक्तुमिहेच्छसि ॥२७॥
27. tvaṁ tu sarvātiśaṅkitvānniṣṭhuraḥ pāpaniścayaḥ ,
śreyasastvaddhite yuktāṁstattadvaktumihecchasi.
27. tvam tu sarvātiśaṅkitvāt niṣṭhuraḥ pāpaniścayaḥ
śreyasaḥ tvat-hite yuktān tat-tat vaktum iha icchasi
27. tvam tu sarvātiśaṅkitvāt niṣṭhuraḥ pāpaniścayaḥ iha
tvat-hite yuktān śreyasaḥ tat-tat vaktum icchasi
27. But you, due to your extreme suspicion of everyone, are cruel and possess an evil resolve. Here, you wish to speak various things to those who are engaged in your welfare (śreyas).
गच्छ त्वमपि कौन्तेयमात्मार्थेभ्यो हि माचिरम् ।
त्वमप्याशंससे योद्धुं कुलजः क्षत्रियो ह्यसि ॥२८॥
28. gaccha tvamapi kaunteyamātmārthebhyo hi māciram ,
tvamapyāśaṁsase yoddhuṁ kulajaḥ kṣatriyo hyasi.
28. gaccha tvam api kaunteyam ātma-arthebhyaḥ hi mā ciram
tvam api āśaṃsase yoddhum kulajaḥ kṣatriyaḥ hi asi
28. tvam api kaunteyam ātma-arthebhyaḥ mā ciram hi gaccha
tvam api kulajaḥ kṣatriyaḥ hi asi yoddhum āśaṃsase
28. Go now, O son of Kunti, without delay for your own interests. You too desire to fight, for you are indeed a noble-born warrior (kṣatriya).
इमान्किं पार्थिवान्सर्वान्घातयिष्यस्यनागसः ।
त्वमस्य मूलं वैरस्य तस्मादासादयार्जुनम् ॥२९॥
29. imānkiṁ pārthivānsarvānghātayiṣyasyanāgasaḥ ,
tvamasya mūlaṁ vairasya tasmādāsādayārjunam.
29. imān kim pārthivān sarvān ghātayiṣyasi anāgasaḥ
tvam asya mūlam vairasya tasmāt āsādaya arjunam
29. kim tvam imān sarvān anāgasaḥ pārthivān ghātayiṣyasi
tvam asya vairasya mūlam tasmāt arjunam āsādaya
29. Will you indeed cause all these innocent kings to be killed? You are the root of this hostility; therefore, approach Arjuna.
एष ते मातुलः प्राज्ञः क्षत्रधर्ममनुव्रतः ।
दूर्द्यूतदेवी गान्धारिः प्रयात्वर्जुनमाहवे ॥३०॥
30. eṣa te mātulaḥ prājñaḥ kṣatradharmamanuvrataḥ ,
dūrdyūtadevī gāndhāriḥ prayātvarjunamāhave.

30. Let this maternal uncle of yours, who is supposedly wise and follows the natural law (dharma) of a warrior (kṣatriya), this master of dice-gambling from Gandhara, go to Arjuna in battle!
एषोऽक्षकुशलो जिह्मो द्यूतकृत्कितवः शठः ।
देविता निकृतिप्रज्ञो युधि जेष्यति पाण्डवान् ॥३१॥
31. eṣo'kṣakuśalo jihmo dyūtakṛtkitavaḥ śaṭhaḥ ,
devitā nikṛtiprajño yudhi jeṣyati pāṇḍavān.

31. This expert at dice, who is crooked, a gambler, a cheat, and a rogue—a master of deceitful schemes—will conquer the Pandavas in battle.
त्वया कथितमत्यन्तं कर्णेन सह हृष्टवत् ।
असकृच्छून्यवन्मोहाद्धृतराष्ट्रस्य शृण्वतः ॥३२॥
32. tvayā kathitamatyantaṁ karṇena saha hṛṣṭavat ,
asakṛcchūnyavanmohāddhṛtarāṣṭrasya śṛṇvataḥ.

asakṛt śūnyavat mohāt dhṛtarāṣṭrasya śṛṇvataḥ

32. You repeatedly spoke, with Karna, with great joy and heedlessness, out of delusion (moha), even as Dhritarashtra was listening.
अहं च तात कर्णश्च भ्राता दुःशासनश्च मे ।
पाण्डुपुत्रान्हनिष्यामः सहिताः समरे त्रयः ॥३३॥
33. ahaṁ ca tāta karṇaśca bhrātā duḥśāsanaśca me ,
pāṇḍuputrānhaniṣyāmaḥ sahitāḥ samare trayaḥ.
33. aham ca tāta karṇaḥ ca bhrātā duḥśāsanaḥ ca me
pāṇḍuputrān haniṣyāmaḥ sahitāḥ samare trayaḥ

33. And I, dear father, and Karna, and my brother Duḥśāsana—we three, united, will kill the sons of Pandu in battle.
इति ते कत्थमानस्य श्रुतं संसदि संसदि ।
अनुतिष्ठ प्रतिज्ञां तां सत्यवाग्भव तैः सह ॥३४॥
34. iti te katthamānasya śrutaṁ saṁsadi saṁsadi ,
anutiṣṭha pratijñāṁ tāṁ satyavāgbhava taiḥ saha.

34. Thus, your boasting was heard in every assembly. Fulfill that promise; be truthful with them.
एष ते पाण्डवः शत्रुरविषह्योऽग्रतः स्थितः ।
क्षत्रधर्ममवेक्षस्व श्लाघ्यस्तव वधो जयात् ॥३५॥
35. eṣa te pāṇḍavaḥ śatruraviṣahyo'grataḥ sthitaḥ ,
kṣatradharmamavekṣasva ślāghyastava vadho jayāt.
35. eṣaḥ te pāṇḍavaḥ śatruḥ aviṣahyaḥ agrataḥ sthitaḥ
kṣatradharmam avekṣasva ślāghyaḥ tava vadhaḥ jayāt
35. eṣaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ te aviṣahyaḥ śatruḥ agrataḥ sthitaḥ kṣatradharmam avekṣasva tava vadhaḥ jayāt ślāghyaḥ asti.
35. This Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) is your invincible enemy, standing before you. Reflect on your warrior's code (kṣatradharma). For you, death (in battle) is more glorious than victory.
दत्तं भुक्तमधीतं च प्राप्तमैश्वर्यमीप्सितम् ।
कृतकृत्योऽनृणश्चासि मा भैर्युध्यस्व पाण्डवम् ॥३६॥
36. dattaṁ bhuktamadhītaṁ ca prāptamaiśvaryamīpsitam ,
kṛtakṛtyo'nṛṇaścāsi mā bhairyudhyasva pāṇḍavam.

kṛtakṛtyaḥ anṛṇaḥ ca asi mā bhaiḥ yudhyasva pāṇḍavam

36. You have given (dāna) gifts, enjoyed pleasures, studied (knowledge), and attained the desired sovereignty (aiśvarya). You have accomplished what needed to be done and are free from debts. Do not fear! Fight the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna)!
इत्युक्त्वा समरे द्रोणो न्यवर्तत यतः परे ।
द्वैधीकृत्य ततः सेनां युद्धं समभवत्तदा ॥३७॥
37. ityuktvā samare droṇo nyavartata yataḥ pare ,
dvaidhīkṛtya tataḥ senāṁ yuddhaṁ samabhavattadā.
37. iti uktvā samare droṇaḥ nyavartata yataḥ pare
dvaidhīkṛtya tataḥ senām yuddham samabhavat tadā

37. Having spoken thus, Drona returned to where the enemies were on the battlefield. Then, having divided his army into two, the battle commenced.
