वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः संवादिते तस्मिन्ननुज्ञातो धनंजयः ।
गतां रैवतके कन्यां विदित्वा जनमेजय ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ saṁvādite tasminnanujñāto dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
gatāṁ raivatake kanyāṁ viditvā janamejaya.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: O Janamejaya, when that matter was communicated, Dhananjaya (Arjuna), having received permission, learned that the maiden had gone to Raivataka.
वासुदेवाभ्यनुज्ञातः कथयित्वेतिकृत्यताम् ।
कृष्णस्य मतमाज्ञाय प्रययौ भरतर्षभः ॥२॥
2. vāsudevābhyanujñātaḥ kathayitvetikṛtyatām ,
kṛṣṇasya matamājñāya prayayau bharatarṣabhaḥ.

2. Having been permitted by Vāsudeva (Krishna), and having stated what was to be done, the best among the Bharatas (Arjuna), understanding Krishna's intention, departed.
रथेन काञ्चनाङ्गेन कल्पितेन यथाविधि ।
सैन्यसुग्रीवयुक्तेन किङ्किणीजालमालिना ॥३॥
3. rathena kāñcanāṅgena kalpitena yathāvidhi ,
sainyasugrīvayuktena kiṅkiṇījālamālinā.

3. He departed in a chariot that had golden parts, was prepared according to the proper rites, was yoked with (horses named) Saivya and Sugriva, and was adorned with a network of small bells.
सर्वशस्त्रोपपन्नेन जीमूतरवनादिना ।
ज्वलिताग्निप्रकाशेन द्विषतां हर्षघातिना ॥४॥
4. sarvaśastropapannena jīmūtaravanādinā ,
jvalitāgniprakāśena dviṣatāṁ harṣaghātinā.

4. It was endowed with all weapons, making a sound like the roar of a thundercloud, shining with the radiance of a blazing fire, and destroying the joy of enemies.
संनद्धः कवची खड्गी बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्रवान् ।
मृगयाव्यपदेशेन यौगपद्येन भारत ॥५॥
5. saṁnaddhaḥ kavacī khaḍgī baddhagodhāṅgulitravān ,
mṛgayāvyapadeśena yaugapadyena bhārata.

5. O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), fully armed, armored, carrying a sword, and wearing a leather finger-protector, he did this simultaneously under the pretext of hunting.
सुभद्रा त्वथ शैलेन्द्रमभ्यर्च्य सह रैवतम् ।
दैवतानि च सर्वाणि ब्राह्मणान्स्वस्ति वाच्य च ॥६॥
6. subhadrā tvatha śailendramabhyarcya saha raivatam ,
daivatāni ca sarvāṇi brāhmaṇānsvasti vācya ca.
6. subhadrā tu atha śailendram abhyarcya saha raivatam
daivatāni ca sarvāṇi brāhmaṇān svasti vācya ca
6. Then Subhadra, having worshipped the lord of mountains Raivata, along with all the deities, and having requested Brahmins to recite blessings, (prepared to leave).
प्रदक्षिणं गिरिं कृत्वा प्रययौ द्वारकां प्रति ।
तामभिद्रुत्य कौन्तेयः प्रसह्यारोपयद्रथम् ॥७॥
7. pradakṣiṇaṁ giriṁ kṛtvā prayayau dvārakāṁ prati ,
tāmabhidrutya kaunteyaḥ prasahyāropayadratham.
7. pradakṣiṇam girim kṛtvā prayayau dvārakām prati
tām abhidrutya kaunteyaḥ prasahya āropayat ratham
7. Having circumambulated the mountain clockwise, she set off towards Dvaraka. But Arjuna (kaunteya), rushing towards her, forcibly made her ascend his chariot.
ततः स पुरुषव्याघ्रस्तामादाय शुचिस्मिताम् ।
रथेनाकाशगेनैव प्रययौ स्वपुरं प्रति ॥८॥
8. tataḥ sa puruṣavyāghrastāmādāya śucismitām ,
rathenākāśagenaiva prayayau svapuraṁ prati.
8. tataḥ saḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ tām ādāya śucismitām
rathena ākāśagena eva prayayau svapuram prati
8. Then that tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), having taken her, the one with the pure smile, departed towards his own city by that very sky-going chariot.
ह्रियमाणां तु तां दृष्ट्वा सुभद्रां सैनिको जनः ।
विक्रोशन्प्राद्रवत्सर्वो द्वारकामभितः पुरीम् ॥९॥
9. hriyamāṇāṁ tu tāṁ dṛṣṭvā subhadrāṁ sainiko janaḥ ,
vikrośanprādravatsarvo dvārakāmabhitaḥ purīm.
9. hriyamāṇām tu tām dṛṣṭvā subhadrām sainikaḥ janaḥ
vikrośan prādravat sarvaḥ dvārakāmabhitaḥ purīm
9. When the soldiers and other people saw Subhadra being carried away, they all ran screaming around the city of Dvaraka.
ते समासाद्य सहिताः सुधर्मामभितः सभाम् ।
सभापालस्य तत्सर्वमाचख्युः पार्थविक्रमम् ॥१०॥
10. te samāsādya sahitāḥ sudharmāmabhitaḥ sabhām ,
sabhāpālasya tatsarvamācakhyuḥ pārthavikramam.
10. te samāsādya sahitāḥ sudharmām abhitaḥ sabhām
sabhāpālasya tat sarvam ācakhyuḥ pārthavikramam
10. They all gathered together and, approaching the Sudharma assembly hall, narrated the entire feat of Arjuna (pārtha) to the hall-guardian.
तेषां श्रुत्वा सभापालो भेरीं सांनाहिकीं ततः ।
समाजघ्ने महाघोषां जाम्बूनदपरिष्कृताम् ॥११॥
11. teṣāṁ śrutvā sabhāpālo bherīṁ sāṁnāhikīṁ tataḥ ,
samājaghne mahāghoṣāṁ jāmbūnadapariṣkṛtām.
11. teṣām śrutvā sabhāpālaḥ bherīm sāṃnāhikīm
tataḥ samājaghne mahāghoṣām jāmbūnadapariṣkṛtām
11. Upon hearing their report, the hall-guardian then struck the great-sounding war-drum, which was adorned with gold (jāmbūnada).
क्षुब्धास्तेनाथ शब्देन भोजवृष्ण्यन्धकास्तदा ।
अन्नपानमपास्याथ समापेतुः सभां ततः ॥१२॥
12. kṣubdhāstenātha śabdena bhojavṛṣṇyandhakāstadā ,
annapānamapāsyātha samāpetuḥ sabhāṁ tataḥ.
12. kṣubdhāḥ tena atha śabdena bhojavṛṣṇyandhakāḥ
tadā annapānam apāsya atha samāpetuḥ sabhām tataḥ
12. Disturbed by that sound, the Bhojas, Vrishnis, and Andhakas then abandoned their food and drink and assembled in the hall.
ततो जाम्बूनदाङ्गानि स्पर्ध्यास्तरणवन्ति च ।
मणिविद्रुमचित्राणि ज्वलिताग्निप्रभाणि च ॥१३॥
13. tato jāmbūnadāṅgāni spardhyāstaraṇavanti ca ,
maṇividrumacitrāṇi jvalitāgniprabhāṇi ca.
13. tataḥ jāmbūnadāṅgāni spardhyāstaraṇavanti
ca maṇividrumacitrāṇi jvalitāgniprabhāṇi ca
13. Then, there were objects made of fine gold, possessing excellent coverings, variegated with jewels and corals, and shining with the radiance of a blazing fire.
भेजिरे पुरुषव्याघ्रा वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथाः ।
सिंहासनानि शतशो धिष्ण्यानीव हुताशनाः ॥१४॥
14. bhejire puruṣavyāghrā vṛṣṇyandhakamahārathāḥ ,
siṁhāsanāni śataśo dhiṣṇyānīva hutāśanāḥ.
14. bhejire puruṣavyāghrāḥ vṛṣṇyandhakamahārathāḥ
siṃhāsanāni śataśaḥ dhiṣṇyāni iva hutāśanāḥ
14. The foremost among men, the great chariot-warriors of the Vrishni and Andhaka clans, occupied hundreds of thrones, like blazing fires settling upon their altars.
तेषां समुपविष्टानां देवानामिव संनये ।
आचख्यौ चेष्टितं जिष्णोः सभापालः सहानुगः ॥१५॥
15. teṣāṁ samupaviṣṭānāṁ devānāmiva saṁnaye ,
ācakhyau ceṣṭitaṁ jiṣṇoḥ sabhāpālaḥ sahānugaḥ.
15. teṣām samupaviṣṭānām devānām iva saṃnaye
ācakhyau ceṣṭitam jiṣṇoḥ sabhāpālaḥ saha anugaḥ
15. As they sat assembled, appearing like gods in an assembly, the hall-keeper, accompanied by his attendants, narrated the actions of Jishnu (Arjuna).
तच्छ्रुत्वा वृष्णिवीरास्ते मदरक्तान्तलोचनाः ।
अमृष्यमाणाः पार्थस्य समुत्पेतुरहंकृताः ॥१६॥
16. tacchrutvā vṛṣṇivīrāste madaraktāntalocanāḥ ,
amṛṣyamāṇāḥ pārthasya samutpeturahaṁkṛtāḥ.
16. tat śrutvā vṛṣṇivīrāḥ te madaraktāntalocanāḥ
amṛṣyamāṇāḥ pārthasya samutpetuḥ ahaṃkṛtāḥ
16. Having heard that, those Vrishni heroes, with the corners of their eyes red with intoxication and anger, and filled with ego (ahaṅkāra), leapt up, unable to tolerate the actions of Partha (Arjuna).
योजयध्वं रथानाशु प्रासानाहरतेति च ।
धनूंषि च महार्हाणि कवचानि बृहन्ति च ॥१७॥
17. yojayadhvaṁ rathānāśu prāsānāharateti ca ,
dhanūṁṣi ca mahārhāṇi kavacāni bṛhanti ca.
17. yojayadhvam rathān āśu prāsān āharata iti ca
dhanūṃṣi ca mahārhāṇi kavacāni bṛhanti ca
17. “Harness the chariots quickly and bring the spears!” Such were the commands. “And bring the very valuable bows and large armors too!”
सूतानुच्चुक्रुशुः केचिद्रथान्योजयतेति च ।
स्वयं च तुरगान्केचिन्निन्युर्हेमविभूषितान् ॥१८॥
18. sūtānuccukruśuḥ kecidrathānyojayateti ca ,
svayaṁ ca turagānkecinninyurhemavibhūṣitān.
18. sūtān uccukruśuḥ kecit rathān yojayata iti ca
svayam ca turagān kecit ninyuḥ hemavibhūṣitān
18. Some people shouted to the charioteers, saying, "Harness the chariots!" And others themselves led away the horses adorned with gold.
रथेष्वानीयमानेषु कवचेषु ध्वजेषु च ।
अभिक्रन्दे नृवीराणां तदासीत्संकुलं महत् ॥१९॥
19. ratheṣvānīyamāneṣu kavaceṣu dhvajeṣu ca ,
abhikrande nṛvīrāṇāṁ tadāsītsaṁkulaṁ mahat.
19. ratheṣu ānīyamāneṣu kavaceṣu dhvajeṣu ca
abhikrande nṛvīrāṇām tadā āsīt saṅkulam mahat
19. As the chariots, armors, and banners were being brought forth, there was then a great clamor and tumult among the heroic men.
वनमाली ततः क्षीबः कैलासशिखरोपमः ।
नीलवासा मदोत्सिक्त इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२०॥
20. vanamālī tataḥ kṣībaḥ kailāsaśikharopamaḥ ,
nīlavāsā madotsikta idaṁ vacanamabravīt.
20. vanamālī tataḥ kṣībaḥ kailāsaśikharopamaḥ
nīlavāsā madotsiktaḥ idam vacanam abravīt
20. Then Vanāmālī, intoxicated and resembling the peak of Mount Kailāsa, clad in blue garments and flushed with excitement, spoke these words.
किमिदं कुरुथाप्रज्ञास्तूष्णीं भूते जनार्दने ।
अस्य भावमविज्ञाय संक्रुद्धा मोघगर्जिताः ॥२१॥
21. kimidaṁ kuruthāprajñāstūṣṇīṁ bhūte janārdane ,
asya bhāvamavijñāya saṁkruddhā moghagarjitāḥ.
21. kim idam kuruthāḥ aprājñāḥ tūṣṇīm bhūte janārdane
asya bhāvam avijñāya saṃkruddhāḥ moghagarjitāḥ
21. What are you doing, you unwise ones, while Janārdana remains silent? Without understanding his intention, you are enraged and roaring in vain.
एष तावदभिप्रायमाख्यातु स्वं महामतिः ।
यदस्य रुचितं कर्तुं तत्कुरुध्वमतन्द्रिताः ॥२२॥
22. eṣa tāvadabhiprāyamākhyātu svaṁ mahāmatiḥ ,
yadasya rucitaṁ kartuṁ tatkurudhvamatandritāḥ.
22. eṣaḥ tāvat abhiprāyam ākhyātu svam mahāmatiḥ
yat asya rucitam kartum tat kurudhvam atandritāḥ
22. Let this great-minded one first express his own intention. Whatever he wishes to do, you all should diligently carry that out.
ततस्ते तद्वचः श्रुत्वा ग्राह्यरूपं हलायुधात् ।
तूष्णीं भूतास्ततः सर्वे साधु साध्विति चाब्रुवन् ॥२३॥
23. tataste tadvacaḥ śrutvā grāhyarūpaṁ halāyudhāt ,
tūṣṇīṁ bhūtāstataḥ sarve sādhu sādhviti cābruvan.
23. tataḥ te tat vacaḥ śrutvā grāhyarūpam halāyudhāt
tūṣṇīm bhūtāḥ tataḥ sarve sādhu sādhu iti ca abruvan
23. Then, having heard that acceptable statement from Baladeva (Halāyudha), all of them became silent and said, 'Excellent! Excellent!'
समं वचो निशम्येति बलदेवस्य धीमतः ।
पुनरेव सभामध्ये सर्वे तु समुपाविशन् ॥२४॥
24. samaṁ vaco niśamyeti baladevasya dhīmataḥ ,
punareva sabhāmadhye sarve tu samupāviśan.
24. samam vacaḥ niśamya iti baladevasya dhīmataḥ
punaḥ eva sabhāmadhye sarve tu sam upāviśan
24. Having heard that impartial statement from the wise Baladeva, all of them, indeed, sat down again in the middle of the assembly.
ततोऽब्रवीत्कामपालो वासुदेवं परंतपम् ।
किमवागुपविष्टोऽसि प्रेक्षमाणो जनार्दन ॥२५॥
25. tato'bravītkāmapālo vāsudevaṁ paraṁtapam ,
kimavāgupaviṣṭo'si prekṣamāṇo janārdana.
25. tataḥ abravīt kāmapālaḥ vāsudevam paraṃtapam
kim avāk upaviṣṭaḥ asi prekṣamāṇaḥ janārdana
25. Then Kāmapāla (Balarāma) said to Vāsudeva (Krishna), the tormentor of enemies: "Janārdana, why are you sitting down silently, merely observing?"
सत्कृतस्त्वत्कृते पार्थः सर्वैरस्माभिरच्युत ।
न च सोऽर्हति तां पूजां दुर्बुद्धिः कुलपांसनः ॥२६॥
26. satkṛtastvatkṛte pārthaḥ sarvairasmābhiracyuta ,
na ca so'rhati tāṁ pūjāṁ durbuddhiḥ kulapāṁsanaḥ.
26. satkṛtaḥ tvatkṛte pārthaḥ sarvaiḥ asmābhiḥ acyuta
na ca saḥ arhati tām pūjām durbuddhiḥ kulapāṃsanaḥ
26. O Acyuta (Krishna), Pārtha (Arjuna) has been honored by all of us because of you. However, that foolish, family-disgracing person does not deserve such respect.
को हि तत्रैव भुक्त्वान्नं भाजनं भेत्तुमर्हति ।
मन्यमानः कुले जातमात्मानं पुरुषः क्वचित् ॥२७॥
27. ko hi tatraiva bhuktvānnaṁ bhājanaṁ bhettumarhati ,
manyamānaḥ kule jātamātmānaṁ puruṣaḥ kvacit.
27. kaḥ hi tatra eva bhuktvā annam bhājanam bhettum
arhati manyamānaḥ kule jātam ātmānam puruṣaḥ kvacit
27. What person (puruṣa) who considers their self (ātman) to be born into a noble family would ever, after having eaten food, be able to break the very vessel from which they ate?
ईप्समानश्च संबन्धं कृतपूर्वं च मानयन् ।
को हि नाम भवेनार्थी साहसेन समाचरेत् ॥२८॥
28. īpsamānaśca saṁbandhaṁ kṛtapūrvaṁ ca mānayan ,
ko hi nāma bhavenārthī sāhasena samācaret.
28. īpsamānaḥ ca saṃbandham kṛtapūrvam ca mānayan
kaḥ hi nāma bhavet anarthī sāhasena samācaret
28. And who, indeed, desiring a connection and honoring what was established previously, would act with such recklessness, becoming one whose purpose is thwarted?
सोऽवमन्य च नामास्माननादृत्य च केशवम् ।
प्रसह्य हृतवानद्य सुभद्रां मृत्युमात्मनः ॥२९॥
29. so'vamanya ca nāmāsmānanādṛtya ca keśavam ,
prasahya hṛtavānadya subhadrāṁ mṛtyumātmanaḥ.
29. saḥ avamanya ca nāma asmān anādṛtya ca keśavam
prasahya hṛtavān adya subhadrām mṛtyum ātmanaḥ
29. He, having indeed slighted us and disregarded Keśava (Krishna), forcibly abducted Subhadrā today, thereby inviting his own death (mṛtyu).
कथं हि शिरसो मध्ये पदं तेन कृतं मम ।
मर्षयिष्यामि गोविन्द पादस्पर्शमिवोरगः ॥३०॥
30. kathaṁ hi śiraso madhye padaṁ tena kṛtaṁ mama ,
marṣayiṣyāmi govinda pādasparśamivoragaḥ.
30. katham hi śirasaḥ madhye padam tena kṛtam mama
marṣayiṣyāmi govinda pādasparśam iva uragaḥ
30. O Govinda, how can I possibly tolerate him placing his foot upon my head, any more than a snake would tolerate being trodden upon?
अद्य निष्कौरवामेकः करिष्यामि वसुंधराम् ।
न हि मे मर्षणीयोऽयमर्जुनस्य व्यतिक्रमः ॥३१॥
31. adya niṣkauravāmekaḥ kariṣyāmi vasuṁdharām ,
na hi me marṣaṇīyo'yamarjunasya vyatikramaḥ.
31. adya niṣkauravām ekaḥ kariṣyāmi vasundharām na
hi me marṣaṇīyaḥ ayam arjunasya vyatikramaḥ
31. Today, I alone will make the earth free of Kauravas. Indeed, this offense by Arjuna cannot be tolerated by me.
तं तथा गर्जमानं तु मेघदुन्दुभिनिःस्वनम् ।
अन्वपद्यन्त ते सर्वे भोजवृष्ण्यन्धकास्तदा ॥३२॥
32. taṁ tathā garjamānaṁ tu meghadundubhiniḥsvanam ,
anvapadyanta te sarve bhojavṛṣṇyandhakāstadā.
32. tam tathā garjamānam tu meghadundubhinisvanam
anvapadyanta te sarve bhojavṛṣṇyandhakāḥ tadā
32. Then, all those Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis, and Andhakas followed him, who was thus roaring with a sound like a thundercloud and a war-drum.
