भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
बृहस्पतेश्च संवादं शक्रस्य च युधिष्ठिर ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
bṛhaspateśca saṁvādaṁ śakrasya ca yudhiṣṭhira.

purātanam bṛhaspateḥ ca saṃvādam śakrasya ca yudhiṣṭhira

1. Bhishma said: O Yudhishthira, regarding this matter, they also narrate this ancient legend, which is a dialogue between Brihaspati and Shakra.
शक्र उवाच ।
किं स्विदेकपदं ब्रह्मन्पुरुषः सम्यगाचरन् ।
प्रमाणं सर्वभूतानां यशश्चैवाप्नुयान्महत् ॥२॥
2. śakra uvāca ,
kiṁ svidekapadaṁ brahmanpuruṣaḥ samyagācaran ,
pramāṇaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ yaśaścaivāpnuyānmahat.
2. śakraḥ uvāca kim svit ekapadam brahman puruṣaḥ samyak
ācaran pramāṇam sarvabhūtānām yaśaḥ ca eva āpnuyāt mahat
2. śakraḥ uvāca he brahman kim svit
ekapadam (asti) yat puruṣaḥ
samyak ācaran sarvabhūtānām pramāṇam
ca mahat yaśaḥ eva āpnuyāt
2. Shakra said: O Brahmin, what indeed is that single principle by properly practicing which a person (puruṣa) may attain to be an authority for all beings and also achieve great fame?
बृहस्पतिरुवाच ।
सान्त्वमेकपदं शक्र पुरुषः सम्यगाचरन् ।
प्रमाणं सर्वभूतानां यशश्चैवाप्नुयान्महत् ॥३॥
3. bṛhaspatiruvāca ,
sāntvamekapadaṁ śakra puruṣaḥ samyagācaran ,
pramāṇaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ yaśaścaivāpnuyānmahat.
3. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca sāntvam ekapadam śakra puruṣaḥ samyak
ācaran pramāṇam sarvabhūtānām yaśaḥ ca eva āpnuyāt mahat
3. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca he śakra sāntvam
ekapadam (asti) yat puruṣaḥ
samyak ācaran sarvabhūtānām

3. Brihaspati said: O Shakra, gentleness (sāntva) is that single principle by properly practicing which a person (puruṣa) may attain to be an authority for all beings and also achieve great fame.
एतदेकपदं शक्र सर्वलोकसुखावहम् ।
आचरन्सर्वभूतेषु प्रियो भवति सर्वदा ॥४॥
4. etadekapadaṁ śakra sarvalokasukhāvaham ,
ācaransarvabhūteṣu priyo bhavati sarvadā.
4. etat ekapadam śakra sarvalokasukhaāvaham
ācaran sarvabhūteṣu priyaḥ bhavati sarvadā
4. he śakra etat ekapadam sarvalokasukhaāvaham (asti)
(yaḥ) (tam) ācaran sarvabhūteṣu priyaḥ sarvadā bhavati
4. O Shakra, this single principle (of gentleness) brings happiness to all worlds. By practicing it towards all beings, one always becomes dear to them.
यो हि नाभाषते किंचित्सततं भ्रुकुटीमुखः ।
द्वेष्यो भवति भूतानां स सान्त्वमिह नाचरन् ॥५॥
5. yo hi nābhāṣate kiṁcitsatataṁ bhrukuṭīmukhaḥ ,
dveṣyo bhavati bhūtānāṁ sa sāntvamiha nācaran.
5. yaḥ hi na ābhāṣate kiṃcit satatam bhrukuṭī-mukhaḥ
dveṣyaḥ bhavati bhūtānām sa sāntvam iha na ācaran
5. yaḥ hi satatam bhrukuṭī-mukhaḥ kiṃcit na ābhāṣate,
sa iha sāntvam na ācaran,
bhūtānām dveṣyaḥ bhavati
5. Indeed, a person who constantly frowns, speaks nothing, and does not use gentle or conciliatory words (sāntva) in this world, becomes disliked by all creatures.
यस्तु पूर्वमभिप्रेक्ष्य पूर्वमेवाभिभाषते ।
स्मितपूर्वाभिभाषी च तस्य लोकः प्रसीदति ॥६॥
6. yastu pūrvamabhiprekṣya pūrvamevābhibhāṣate ,
smitapūrvābhibhāṣī ca tasya lokaḥ prasīdati.
6. yaḥ tu pūrvam abhiprekṣya pūrvam eva abhibhāṣate
smita-pūrva-abhibhāṣī ca tasya lokaḥ prasīdati
6. yaḥ tu pūrvam abhiprekṣya pūrvam eva abhibhāṣate,
ca smita-pūrva-abhibhāṣī,
tasya lokaḥ prasīdati
6. On the other hand, the person who anticipates (the needs or thoughts of others), speaks first (proactively), and addresses others with a preceding smile, earns the favor of the people (loka).
दानमेव हि सर्वत्र सान्त्वेनानभिजल्पितम् ।
न प्रीणयति भूतानि निर्व्यञ्जनमिवाशनम् ॥७॥
7. dānameva hi sarvatra sāntvenānabhijalpitam ,
na prīṇayati bhūtāni nirvyañjanamivāśanam.
7. dānam eva hi sarvatra sāntvena anabhijalpitam
na prīṇayati bhūtāni nir-vyañjanam iva aśanam
7. hi sarvatra sāntvena anabhijalpitam dānam eva bhūtāni na prīṇayati,
nir-vyañjanam iva aśanam
7. Indeed, charity (dāna) offered anywhere without conciliatory words (sāntva) does not please beings, just as food (aśana) without condiments (nirvyñjana) does not satisfy.
अदाता ह्यपि भूतानां मधुरामीरयन्गिरम् ।
सर्वलोकमिमं शक्र सान्त्वेन कुरुते वशे ॥८॥
8. adātā hyapi bhūtānāṁ madhurāmīrayangiram ,
sarvalokamimaṁ śakra sāntvena kurute vaśe.
8. adātā hi api bhūtānām madhurām īrayan giram
sarva-lokam imam śakra sāntvena kurute vaśe
8. hi śakra,
adātā api bhūtānām madhurām giram īrayan,
imam sarva-lokam sāntvena vaśe kurute
8. O Śakra, even a person who does not give (adātṛ), by uttering sweet words (gira) to beings, brings this entire world (sarvaloka) under their control (vaśa) through conciliatory speech (sāntva).
तस्मात्सान्त्वं प्रकर्तव्यं दण्डमाधित्सतामिह ।
फलं च जनयत्येवं न चास्योद्विजते जनः ॥९॥
9. tasmātsāntvaṁ prakartavyaṁ daṇḍamādhitsatāmiha ,
phalaṁ ca janayatyevaṁ na cāsyodvijate janaḥ.
9. tasmāt sāntvaṃ prakartavyaṃ daṇḍam ādhitsatām iha
phalaṃ ca janayaty evaṃ na ca asya udvijate janaḥ
9. tasmāt daṇḍam ādhitsatām iha sāntvaṃ prakartavyaṃ
ca evaṃ phalaṃ janayati ca asya janaḥ na udvijate
9. Therefore, conciliation should be employed by those who intend to impose punishment here. For it produces good results in this way, and the people are not agitated by it.
सुकृतस्य हि सान्त्वस्य श्लक्ष्णस्य मधुरस्य च ।
सम्यगासेव्यमानस्य तुल्यं जातु न विद्यते ॥१०॥
10. sukṛtasya hi sāntvasya ślakṣṇasya madhurasya ca ,
samyagāsevyamānasya tulyaṁ jātu na vidyate.
10. sukṛtasya hi sāntvasya ślakṣṇasya madhurasya
ca samyak āsevyamānasya tulyaṃ jātu na vidyate
10. hi sukṛtasya ślakṣṇasya madhurasya ca samyak
āsevyamānasya sāntvasya tulyaṃ jātu na vidyate
10. Indeed, nothing comparable to a well-executed, gentle, and sweet conciliation, when properly employed, ever exists.
भीष्म उवाच ।
इत्युक्तः कृतवान्सर्वं तथा शक्रः पुरोधसा ।
तथा त्वमपि कौन्तेय सम्यगेतत्समाचर ॥११॥
11. bhīṣma uvāca ,
ityuktaḥ kṛtavānsarvaṁ tathā śakraḥ purodhasā ,
tathā tvamapi kaunteya samyagetatsamācara.
11. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca iti uktaḥ kṛtavān sarvaṃ tathā śakraḥ
purodhasā tathā tvaṃ api kaunteya samyak etat samācara
11. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca.
iti uktaḥ śakraḥ purodhasā tathā sarvaṃ kṛtavān.
tathā kaunteya tvaṃ api etat samyak samācara
11. Bhishma said: "Having been thus advised by his chief priest, Indra (Śakra) acted accordingly in every respect. Similarly, O son of Kunti (Kaunteya), you too should properly follow this instruction."
