युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
उत सन्तमसन्तं च बालं वृद्धं च संजय ।
उताबलं बलीयांसं धाता प्रकुरुते वशे ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
uta santamasantaṁ ca bālaṁ vṛddhaṁ ca saṁjaya ,
utābalaṁ balīyāṁsaṁ dhātā prakurute vaśe.

1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: O Saṃjaya, the Creator (dhātā) brings both the existent and the non-existent, the young and the old, and the weak and the powerful, under His control.
उत बालाय पाण्डित्यं पण्डितायोत बालताम् ।
ददाति सर्वमीशानः पुरस्ताच्छुक्रमुच्चरन् ॥२॥
2. uta bālāya pāṇḍityaṁ paṇḍitāyota bālatām ,
dadāti sarvamīśānaḥ purastācchukramuccaran.
2. uta bālāya pāṇḍityam paṇḍitāya uta bālatām
dadāti sarvam īśānaḥ purastāt śukram uccaran
2. The sovereign lord (īśānaḥ), manifesting splendor (śukram) from the front, bestows wisdom upon a child and childishness upon a wise man, indeed everything.
अलं विज्ञापनाय स्यादाचक्षीथा यथातथम् ।
अथो मन्त्रं मन्त्रयित्वा अन्योन्येनातिहृष्टवत् ॥३॥
3. alaṁ vijñāpanāya syādācakṣīthā yathātatham ,
atho mantraṁ mantrayitvā anyonyenātihṛṣṭavat.
3. alam vijñāpanāya syāt ācakṣīthā yathātatham
atho mantram mantrayitvā anyonyena atihṛṣṭavat
3. Let this be enough for my petition; you should truly explain it as it is. Then, having consulted each other, they were extremely pleased.
गावल्गणे कुरून्गत्वा धृतराष्ट्रं महाबलम् ।
अभिवाद्योपसंगृह्य ततः पृच्छेरनामयम् ॥४॥
4. gāvalgaṇe kurūngatvā dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ mahābalam ,
abhivādyopasaṁgṛhya tataḥ pṛccheranāmayam.
4. gāvargaṇe kurūn gatvā dhṛtarāṣṭram mahābalam
abhivādya upasaṅgṛhya tataḥ pṛccheḥ anāmayam
4. O son of Gavālgaṇa (Sañjaya), having gone to the Kurus, greet the very powerful Dhṛtarāṣṭra, approach him, and then you should ask about his well-being.
ब्रूयाश्चैनं त्वमासीनं कुरुभिः परिवारितम् ।
तवैव राजन्वीर्येण सुखं जीवन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥५॥
5. brūyāścainaṁ tvamāsīnaṁ kurubhiḥ parivāritam ,
tavaiva rājanvīryeṇa sukhaṁ jīvanti pāṇḍavāḥ.
5. brūyāḥ ca enam tvam āsīnam kurubhiḥ parivāritam
tava eva rājan vīryeṇa sukham jīvanti pāṇḍavāḥ
5. And you should say to him, O King, while he is seated, surrounded by the Kurus, that the Pāṇḍavas live happily by your very prowess.
तव प्रसादाद्बालास्ते प्राप्ता राज्यमरिंदम ।
राज्ये तान्स्थापयित्वाग्रे नोपेक्षीर्विनशिष्यतः ॥६॥
6. tava prasādādbālāste prāptā rājyamariṁdama ,
rājye tānsthāpayitvāgre nopekṣīrvinaśiṣyataḥ.
6. tava prasādāt bālāḥ te prāptāḥ rājyam arimdama
rājye tān sthāpayitvā agre na upekṣīḥ vinashiṣyataḥ
6. O suppressor of enemies (arimdama), by your grace, those young men have obtained the kingdom. Having first established them in the kingdom, do not neglect them, for they are about to perish.
सर्वमप्येतदेकस्य नालं संजय कस्यचित् ।
तात संहत्य जीवामो मा द्विषद्भ्यो वशं गमः ॥७॥
7. sarvamapyetadekasya nālaṁ saṁjaya kasyacit ,
tāta saṁhatya jīvāmo mā dviṣadbhyo vaśaṁ gamaḥ.
7. sarvam api etat ekasya na alam sañjaya kasyacit
tāta saṃhatya jīvāmaḥ mā dviṣadbhyaḥ vaśam gamaḥ
7. O Sañjaya, all this (kingdom and wealth) is not sufficient for any single individual. O dear one, let us live united; do not fall into the power of enemies.
तथा भीष्मं शांतनवं भारतानां पितामहम् ।
शिरसाभिवदेथास्त्वं मम नाम प्रकीर्तयन् ॥८॥
8. tathā bhīṣmaṁ śāṁtanavaṁ bhāratānāṁ pitāmaham ,
śirasābhivadethāstvaṁ mama nāma prakīrtayan.
8. tathā bhīṣmam śāntanavam bhāratānām pitāmaham
śirasā abhivadetāḥ tvam mama nāma prakīrtayan
8. Then, you should bow your head to Bhishma, the son of Shantanu and the grandfather of the Bharatas, while proclaiming my name.
अभिवाद्य च वक्तव्यस्ततोऽस्माकं पितामहः ।
भवता शंतनोर्वंशो निमग्नः पुनरुद्धृतः ॥९॥
9. abhivādya ca vaktavyastato'smākaṁ pitāmahaḥ ,
bhavatā śaṁtanorvaṁśo nimagnaḥ punaruddhṛtaḥ.
9. abhivādya ca vaktavyaḥ tataḥ asmākam pitāmahaḥ
bhavatā śantanoḥ vaṃśaḥ nimagnaḥ punaḥ uddhṛtaḥ
9. And having bowed, our grandfather should be addressed thus: 'By you, the lineage of Shantanu, which was submerged, has been rescued once again.'
स त्वं कुरु तथा तात स्वमतेन पितामह ।
यथा जीवन्ति ते पौत्राः प्रीतिमन्तः परस्परम् ॥१०॥
10. sa tvaṁ kuru tathā tāta svamatena pitāmaha ,
yathā jīvanti te pautrāḥ prītimantaḥ parasparam.
10. saḥ tvam kuru tathā tāta svamatena pitāmaha
yathā jīvanti te pautrāḥ prītimantaḥ parasparam
10. Therefore, dear grandfather, you should act according to your own judgment in such a way that your grandsons live together in mutual affection.
तथैव विदुरं ब्रूयाः कुरूणां मन्त्रधारिणम् ।
अयुद्धं सौम्य भाषस्व हितकामो युधिष्ठिरः ॥११॥
11. tathaiva viduraṁ brūyāḥ kurūṇāṁ mantradhāriṇam ,
ayuddhaṁ saumya bhāṣasva hitakāmo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
11. tathā eva viduram brūyāḥ kurūṇām mantradhāriṇam
ayuddham saumya bhāṣasva hitakāmaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
11. Similarly, you should speak to Vidura, the counselor of the Kurus: 'Speak peacefully, gentle one! Yudhishthira wishes for what is beneficial.'
अथो सुयोधनं ब्रूया राजपुत्रममर्षणम् ।
मध्ये कुरूणामासीनमनुनीय पुनः पुनः ॥१२॥
12. atho suyodhanaṁ brūyā rājaputramamarṣaṇam ,
madhye kurūṇāmāsīnamanunīya punaḥ punaḥ.
12. atho suyodhanam brūyāt rājaputram amarṣaṇam
madhye kurūṇām āsīnam anunīya punaḥ punaḥ
12. Then, one should repeatedly conciliate the intolerant prince Suyodhana, who is seated among the Kurus, and speak to him.
अपश्यन्मामुपेक्षन्तं कृष्णामेकां सभागताम् ।
तद्दुःखमतितिक्षाम मा वधीष्म कुरूनिति ॥१३॥
13. apaśyanmāmupekṣantaṁ kṛṣṇāmekāṁ sabhāgatām ,
tadduḥkhamatitikṣāma mā vadhīṣma kurūniti.
13. apaśyan mām upekṣantam kṛṣṇām ekām sabhāgatām
tat duḥkham atitikṣāma mā vadhīṣma kurūn iti
13. They saw me, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadi), neglected and alone, having come into the assembly. We endure that suffering so that we may not slay the Kurus.
एवं पूर्वापरान्क्लेशानतितिक्षन्त पाण्डवाः ।
यथा बलीयसः सन्तस्तत्सर्वं कुरवो विदुः ॥१४॥
14. evaṁ pūrvāparānkleśānatitikṣanta pāṇḍavāḥ ,
yathā balīyasaḥ santastatsarvaṁ kuravo viduḥ.
14. evam pūrvāparān kleśān atitikṣanta pāṇḍavāḥ
yathā balīyasaḥ santaḥ tat sarvam kuravaḥ viduḥ
14. In this manner, the Pāṇḍavas patiently endured successive afflictions, even though they were stronger. All the Kurus know this.
यन्नः प्राव्राजयः सौम्य अजिनैः प्रतिवासितान् ।
तद्दुःखमतितिक्षाम मा वधीष्म कुरूनिति ॥१५॥
15. yannaḥ prāvrājayaḥ saumya ajinaiḥ prativāsitān ,
tadduḥkhamatitikṣāma mā vadhīṣma kurūniti.
15. yat naḥ prāvrājayaḥ saumya ajinaiḥ prativāsitān
tat duḥkham atitikṣāma mā vadhīṣma kurūn iti
15. O gentle one, since you banished us, clad in deerskins, we endure that suffering so that we may not slay the Kurus.
यत्तत्सभायामाक्रम्य कृष्णां केशेष्वधर्षयत् ।
दुःशासनस्तेऽनुमते तच्चास्माभिरुपेक्षितम् ॥१६॥
16. yattatsabhāyāmākramya kṛṣṇāṁ keśeṣvadharṣayat ,
duḥśāsanaste'numate taccāsmābhirupekṣitam.
16. yat tat sabhāyām ākramya kṛṣṇām keśeṣu adharṣayat
duḥśāsanaḥ te anumate tat ca asmābhiḥ upekṣitam
16. With your permission, Duḥśāsana assaulted Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) in that assembly, seizing her by the hair and disgracing her. That act, too, was overlooked by us.
यथोचितं स्वकं भागं लभेमहि परंतप ।
निवर्तय परद्रव्ये बुद्धिं गृद्धां नरर्षभ ॥१७॥
17. yathocitaṁ svakaṁ bhāgaṁ labhemahi paraṁtapa ,
nivartaya paradravye buddhiṁ gṛddhāṁ nararṣabha.
17. yathocitam svakam bhāgam labhemahi paraṃtapa
nivartaya paradravye buddhim gṛddhām nararṣabha
17. O scorcher of foes (paraṃtapa), may we obtain our rightful share. O best among men (nararṣabha), turn back your greedy mind from the property of others.
शान्तिरेवं भवेद्राजन्प्रीतिश्चैव परस्परम् ।
राज्यैकदेशमपि नः प्रयच्छ शममिच्छताम् ॥१८॥
18. śāntirevaṁ bhavedrājanprītiścaiva parasparam ,
rājyaikadeśamapi naḥ prayaccha śamamicchatām.
18. śāntiḥ evam bhavet rājan prītiḥ ca eva parasparam
rājyaikadeśam api naḥ prayaccha śamam icchatām
18. O King (rājan), in this way, there would indeed be peace and mutual affection. Grant us, who desire peace, even a part of the kingdom.
कुशस्थलं वृकस्थलमासन्दी वारणावतम् ।
अवसानं भवेदत्र किंचिदेव तु पञ्चमम् ॥१९॥
19. kuśasthalaṁ vṛkasthalamāsandī vāraṇāvatam ,
avasānaṁ bhavedatra kiṁcideva tu pañcamam.
19. kuśasthalam vṛkasthalam āsandī vāraṇāvatam
avasānam bhavet atra kiṃcit eva tu pañcamam
19. Let Kuśasthala, Vṛkasthala, Āsandī, Vāraṇāvata, and indeed some fifth place here, be our dwelling.
भ्रातॄणां देहि पञ्चानां ग्रामान्पञ्च सुयोधन ।
शान्तिर्नोऽस्तु महाप्राज्ञ ज्ञातिभिः सह संजय ॥२०॥
20. bhrātṝṇāṁ dehi pañcānāṁ grāmānpañca suyodhana ,
śāntirno'stu mahāprājña jñātibhiḥ saha saṁjaya.
20. bhrātṝṇām dehi pañcānām grāmān pañca suyodhana
śāntiḥ naḥ astu mahāprājña jñātibhiḥ saha saṃjaya
20. O Suyodhana, give five villages to the five brothers. O greatly wise Sanjaya, let there be peace for us with our kinsmen.
भ्राता भ्रातरमन्वेतु पिता पुत्रेण युज्यताम् ।
स्मयमानाः समायान्तु पाञ्चालाः कुरुभिः सह ॥२१॥
21. bhrātā bhrātaramanvetu pitā putreṇa yujyatām ,
smayamānāḥ samāyāntu pāñcālāḥ kurubhiḥ saha.
21. bhrātā bhrātaram anu etu pitā putreṇa yujyatām
smayamānāḥ sam āyāntu pāñcālāḥ kurubhiḥ saha
21. Let brother follow brother, and let father be united with son. Let the Pāñcālas and Kurus come together smiling.
अक्षतान्कुरुपाञ्चालान्पश्येम इति कामये ।
सर्वे सुमनसस्तात शाम्याम भरतर्षभ ॥२२॥
22. akṣatānkurupāñcālānpaśyema iti kāmaye ,
sarve sumanasastāta śāmyāma bharatarṣabha.
22. akṣatān kurupāñcālān paśyema iti kāmaye
sarve sumanasaḥ tāta śāmyāma bharatarṣabha
22. I wish that we may see the Kurus and Pāñcālas unharmed. O dear one (tāta), O bull among the Bharatas, let us all be of good heart and achieve peace.
अलमेव शमायास्मि तथा युद्धाय संजय ।
धर्मार्थयोरलं चाहं मृदवे दारुणाय च ॥२३॥
23. alameva śamāyāsmi tathā yuddhāya saṁjaya ,
dharmārthayoralaṁ cāhaṁ mṛdave dāruṇāya ca.
23. alam eva śamāya asmi tathā yuddhāya saṃjaya
dharma-arthayoḥ alam ca aham mṛdave dāruṇāya ca
23. O Sanjaya, I am indeed capable of both peace and war. And I am capable for righteousness (dharma) and purpose (artha), as well as for both gentleness and harshness.
