संजय उवाच ।
एवं दुर्योधने राजन्गर्जमाने मुहुर्मुहुः ।
युधिष्ठिरस्य संक्रुद्धो वासुदेवोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evaṁ duryodhane rājangarjamāne muhurmuhuḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhirasya saṁkruddho vāsudevo'bravīdidam.

1. sañjaya uvāca: rājan,
evam duryodhane muhurmuhuḥ garjamāne (sati),
saṃkruddhaḥ vāsudevaḥ idam yudhiṣṭhirasya abravīt.
1. Sañjaya said: O King, while Duryodhana was roaring repeatedly in this manner, Vāsudeva (Krishna), enraged, spoke the following to Yudhiṣṭhira.
यदि नाम ह्ययं युद्धे वरयेत्त्वां युधिष्ठिर ।
अर्जुनं नकुलं वापि सहदेवमथापि वा ॥२॥
2. yadi nāma hyayaṁ yuddhe varayettvāṁ yudhiṣṭhira ,
arjunaṁ nakulaṁ vāpi sahadevamathāpi vā.
2. yadi nāma hi ayam yuddhe varayet tvām yudhiṣṭhira
arjunam nakulam vā api sahadevam atha api vā
2. yudhiṣṭhira,
yadi nāma hi ayam yuddhe tvām varayet,
vā api arjunam,
vā nakulam,
atha api sahadevam (varayet).
2. O Yudhiṣṭhira, if indeed he (Duryodhana) should choose you in battle, or even Arjuna, or Nakula, or Sahadeva...
किमिदं साहसं राजंस्त्वया व्याहृतमीदृशम् ।
एकमेव निहत्याजौ भव राजा कुरुष्विति ॥३॥
3. kimidaṁ sāhasaṁ rājaṁstvayā vyāhṛtamīdṛśam ,
ekameva nihatyājau bhava rājā kuruṣviti.
3. kim idam sāhasam rājan tvayā vyāhṛtam īdṛśam
ekam eva nihatya ājau bhava rājā kuruṣva iti
3. rājan tvayā īdṛśam idam sāhasam kim vyāhṛtam

3. O King, what is this audacity, this kind of statement made by you? 'Kill just one (of them) in battle, and become king!' — so you proclaim.
एतेन हि कृता योग्या वर्षाणीह त्रयोदश ।
आयसे पुरुषे राजन्भीमसेनजिघांसया ॥४॥
4. etena hi kṛtā yogyā varṣāṇīha trayodaśa ,
āyase puruṣe rājanbhīmasenajighāṁsayā.

āyase puruṣe rājan bhīmasenajighāṃsayā

4. Indeed, by him (Duryodhana) thirteen years of fitting practice have been accomplished here, O King, (using) an iron effigy, with the desire to kill Bhīmasena.
कथं नाम भवेत्कार्यमस्माभिर्भरतर्षभ ।
साहसं कृतवांस्त्वं तु ह्यनुक्रोशान्नृपोत्तम ॥५॥
5. kathaṁ nāma bhavetkāryamasmābhirbharatarṣabha ,
sāhasaṁ kṛtavāṁstvaṁ tu hyanukrośānnṛpottama.
5. katham nāma bhavet kāryam asmābhiḥ bharatarṣabha
sāhasam kṛtavān tvam tu hi anukrośāt nṛpa uttama
5. bharatarṣabha asmābhiḥ kāryam katham nāma bhavet
tu hi nṛpottama tvam anukrośāt sāhasam kṛtavān
5. O best of Bhāratas (bharatarṣabha), how indeed could the task (be accomplished) by us? For you, O best of kings (nṛpottama), have performed this audacious act out of compassion.
नान्यमस्यानुपश्यामि प्रतियोद्धारमाहवे ।
ऋते वृकोदरात्पार्थात्स च नातिकृतश्रमः ॥६॥
6. nānyamasyānupaśyāmi pratiyoddhāramāhave ,
ṛte vṛkodarātpārthātsa ca nātikṛtaśramaḥ.
6. na anyam asya anupaśyāmi pratiyoddhāram āhave
ṛte vṛkodarāt pārthāt sa ca na atikṛtaśramaḥ
6. asya pratiyoddhāram anyam āhave na anupaśyāmi
ṛte vṛkodarāt pārthāt ca sa na atikṛtaśramaḥ
6. I do not see any other challenger (pratiyoddhāra) for him in battle, except for Vṛkodara, son of Pṛthā (Pārtha). And he (Vṛkodara) is not very well-practiced/trained.
तदिदं द्यूतमारब्धं पुनरेव यथा पुरा ।
विषमं शकुनेश्चैव तव चैव विशां पते ॥७॥
7. tadidaṁ dyūtamārabdhaṁ punareva yathā purā ,
viṣamaṁ śakuneścaiva tava caiva viśāṁ pate.
7. tat idam dyūtam ārabdham punar eva yathā purā
viṣamam śakuneḥ ca eva tava ca eva viśām pate
7. viśām pate,
tat idam dyūtam yathā purā punaḥ eva ārabdham.
(tat) śakuneḥ ca eva,
tava ca eva viṣamam (asti).
7. O lord of the people, this gambling match has been started again, just as it was before. It is dangerous both for Śakuni and for you.
बली भीमः समर्थश्च कृती राजा सुयोधनः ।
बलवान्वा कृती वेति कृती राजन्विशिष्यते ॥८॥
8. balī bhīmaḥ samarthaśca kṛtī rājā suyodhanaḥ ,
balavānvā kṛtī veti kṛtī rājanviśiṣyate.
8. balī bhīmaḥ samarthaḥ ca kṛtī rājā suyodhanaḥ
balavān vā kṛtī vā iti kṛtī rājan viśiṣyate
8. bhīmaḥ balī ca samarthaḥ (asti).
rājā suyodhanaḥ kṛtī (asti).
rājan,
balavān vā kṛtī vā iti (praśne),
kṛtī (eva) viśiṣyate.
8. Bhima is strong and capable. King Suyodhana (Duryodhana) is skilled. O king, whether one is strong or skilled, the skilled one always excels.
सोऽयं राजंस्त्वया शत्रुः समे पथि निवेशितः ।
न्यस्तश्चात्मा सुविषमे कृच्छ्रमापादिता वयम् ॥९॥
9. so'yaṁ rājaṁstvayā śatruḥ same pathi niveśitaḥ ,
nyastaścātmā suviṣame kṛcchramāpāditā vayam.
9. saḥ ayam rājan tvayā śatruḥ same pathi niveśitaḥ
nyastaḥ ca ātmā suviṣame kṛcchram āpāditā vayam
9. rājan,
tvayā saḥ ayam śatruḥ same pathi niveśitaḥ.
ātmā ca suviṣame nyastaḥ.
vayam kṛcchram āpāditā (jātāḥ).
9. O king, by you, this enemy has been placed on a favorable path, while our self (ātman) has been placed in an extremely difficult situation. We have been brought into hardship.
को नु सर्वान्विनिर्जित्य शत्रूनेकेन वैरिणा ।
पणित्वा चैकपाणेन रोचयेदेवमाहवम् ॥१०॥
10. ko nu sarvānvinirjitya śatrūnekena vairiṇā ,
paṇitvā caikapāṇena rocayedevamāhavam.
10. kaḥ nu sarvān vinirjitya śatrūn ekena vairiṇā
paṇitvā ca ekapāṇena rocayet evam āhavam
10. kaḥ nu sarvān śatrūn vinirjitya,
ekena vairiṇā ekapāṇena (saha) paṇitvā ca,
evam āhavam rocayet?
10. Who indeed, after defeating all enemies, would then, by gambling with a single foe (Śakuni) with a single throw of dice, approve of such a conflict?
न हि पश्यामि तं लोके गदाहस्तं नरोत्तमम् ।
युध्येद्दुर्योधनं संख्ये कृतित्वाद्धि विशेषयेत् ॥११॥
11. na hi paśyāmi taṁ loke gadāhastaṁ narottamam ,
yudhyedduryodhanaṁ saṁkhye kṛtitvāddhi viśeṣayet.
11. na hi paśyāmi tam loke gadāhastam narottamam
yudhyet duryodhanam saṅkhye kṛtitvāt hi viśeṣayet
11. na hi loke tam gadāhastam narottamam paśyāmi yaḥ
saṅkhye duryodhanam yudhyet kṛtitvāt hi viśeṣayet
11. Indeed, I do not see anyone in this world, among the best of men, who, wielding a mace, could fight Duryodhana in battle and truly surpass him due to his skill.
फल्गुनं वा भवन्तं वा माद्रीपुत्रावथापि वा ।
न समर्थानहं मन्ये गदाहस्तस्य संयुगे ॥१२॥
12. phalgunaṁ vā bhavantaṁ vā mādrīputrāvathāpi vā ,
na samarthānahaṁ manye gadāhastasya saṁyuge.
12. phalgunam vā bhavantam vā mādrīputrau athavā api
vā na samarthān aham manye gadāhastasya saṃyuge
12. aham phalgunam vā bhavantam vā athavā api vā
mādrīputrau saṃyuge gadāhastasya samarthān na manye
12. I do not consider Arjuna, or yourself, or even the sons of Madri, capable against the mace-wielder in combat.
स कथं वदसे शत्रुं युध्यस्व गदयेति ह ।
एकं च नो निहत्याजौ भव राजेति भारत ॥१३॥
13. sa kathaṁ vadase śatruṁ yudhyasva gadayeti ha ,
ekaṁ ca no nihatyājau bhava rājeti bhārata.
13. sa katham vadase śatrum yudhyasva gadayā iti ha
ekam ca naḥ nihatya ājau bhava rājā iti bhārata
13. bhārata sa katham śatrum yudhyasva gadayā iti ha
ekam ca naḥ ājau nihatya rājā bhava iti vadase
13. O Bhārata, why do you say to the enemy, 'Fight with a mace!' and 'Having slain one of us in battle, become king!'?
वृकोदरं समासाद्य संशयो विजये हि नः ।
न्यायतो युध्यमानानां कृती ह्येष महाबलः ॥१४॥
14. vṛkodaraṁ samāsādya saṁśayo vijaye hi naḥ ,
nyāyato yudhyamānānāṁ kṛtī hyeṣa mahābalaḥ.
14. vṛkodaram samāsādya saṃśayaḥ vijaye hi naḥ
nyāyataḥ yudhyamānānām kṛtī hi eṣaḥ mahābalaḥ
14. vṛkodaram samāsādya naḥ vijaye saṃśayaḥ hi
nyāyataḥ yudhyamānānām hi eṣaḥ mahābalaḥ kṛtī
14. Indeed, if we have to face Vṛkodara, there is doubt about our victory, even among those who fight fairly, for this immensely powerful one is truly skilled.
भीम उवाच ।
मधुसूदन मा कार्षीर्विषादं यदुनन्दन ।
अद्य पारं गमिष्यामि वैरस्य भृशदुर्गमम् ॥१५॥
15. bhīma uvāca ,
madhusūdana mā kārṣīrviṣādaṁ yadunandana ,
adya pāraṁ gamiṣyāmi vairasya bhṛśadurgamam.
15. bhīma uvāca madhusūdana mā kārṣīḥ viṣādam yadunandana
adya pāram gamiṣyāmi vairasya bhṛśadurgamam
15. bhīma uvāca madhusūdana yadunandana mā viṣādam
kārṣīḥ adya vairasya bhṛśadurgamam pāram gamiṣyāmi
15. Bhima said, "O Madhusudana, delight of the Yadus, do not be disheartened! Today I shall reach the end of this exceedingly difficult hostility."
अहं सुयोधनं संख्ये हनिष्यामि न संशयः ।
विजयो वै ध्रुवं कृष्ण धर्मराजस्य दृश्यते ॥१६॥
16. ahaṁ suyodhanaṁ saṁkhye haniṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ ,
vijayo vai dhruvaṁ kṛṣṇa dharmarājasya dṛśyate.
16. aham suyodhanam saṃkhye haniṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ
vijayaḥ vai dhruvam kṛṣṇa dharmarājasya dṛśyate
16. aham saṃkhye suyodhanam haniṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ
kṛṣṇa dharmarājasya vijayaḥ vai dhruvam dṛśyate
16. I will surely kill Suyodhana in battle; there is no doubt about it. O Krishna, the victory of the king who upholds natural law (dharmarāja) is indeed certain.
अध्यर्धेन गुणेनेयं गदा गुरुतरी मम ।
न तथा धार्तराष्ट्रस्य मा कार्षीर्माधव व्यथाम् ॥१७॥
17. adhyardhena guṇeneyaṁ gadā gurutarī mama ,
na tathā dhārtarāṣṭrasya mā kārṣīrmādhava vyathām.
17. adhyardhena guṇena iyam gadā gurutari mama na
tathā dhārtarāṣṭrasya mā kārṣīḥ mādhava vyathām
17. adhyardhena guṇena iyam mama gadā gurutari
dhārtarāṣṭrasya tathā na mādhava vyathām mā kārṣīḥ
17. This mace of mine is one and a half times more potent; Dhritarashtra's son's (Duryodhana's) is not so. O Madhava, do not feel distress.
सामरानपि लोकांस्त्रीन्नानाशस्त्रधरान्युधि ।
योधयेयं रणे हृष्टः किमुताद्य सुयोधनम् ॥१८॥
18. sāmarānapi lokāṁstrīnnānāśastradharānyudhi ,
yodhayeyaṁ raṇe hṛṣṭaḥ kimutādya suyodhanam.
18. sāmarān api lokān trīn nānāśastradharān yudhi
yodhayeyam raṇe hṛṣṭaḥ kim uta adya suyodhanam
18. hṛṣṭaḥ raṇe yudhi sāmarān api trīn lokān
nānāśastradharān yodhayeyam adya kim uta suyodhanam
18. Joyful in combat, I would fight even the three worlds along with the Maruts (deities), all bearing various weapons. How much more easily then can I fight Suyodhana today!
संजय उवाच ।
तथा संभाषमाणं तु वासुदेवो वृकोदरम् ।
हृष्टः संपूजयामास वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥१९॥
19. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tathā saṁbhāṣamāṇaṁ tu vāsudevo vṛkodaram ,
hṛṣṭaḥ saṁpūjayāmāsa vacanaṁ cedamabravīt.
19. sañjaya uvāca tathā saṃbhāṣamāṇam tu vāsudevaḥ
vṛkodaram hṛṣṭaḥ sampūjayāmāsa vacanam ca idam abravīt
19. sañjaya uvāca vāsudevaḥ hṛṣṭaḥ tathā saṃbhāṣamāṇam
tu vṛkodaram sampūjayāmāsa ca idam vacanam abravīt
19. Sañjaya said: As Vṛkodara (Bhīma) was speaking thus, Vāsudeva (Krishna), delighted, showed him respect and spoke these words.
त्वामाश्रित्य महाबाहो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
निहतारिः स्वकां दीप्तां श्रियं प्राप्तो न संशयः ॥२०॥
20. tvāmāśritya mahābāho dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
nihatāriḥ svakāṁ dīptāṁ śriyaṁ prāpto na saṁśayaḥ.
20. tvām āśritya mahābāho dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
nihatāriḥ svakām dīptām śriyam prāptaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
20. mahābāho tvām āśritya nihatāriḥ dharmarājaḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ svakām dīptām śriyam prāptaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
20. O mighty-armed one, there is no doubt that King Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of natural law (dharma), relying on you and having vanquished his enemies, has regained his brilliant prosperity.
त्वया विनिहताः सर्वे धृतराष्ट्रसुता रणे ।
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च नागाश्च विनिपातिताः ॥२१॥
21. tvayā vinihatāḥ sarve dhṛtarāṣṭrasutā raṇe ,
rājāno rājaputrāśca nāgāśca vinipātitāḥ.
21. tvayā vinihatāḥ sarve dhṛtarāṣṭrasutāḥ raṇe
rājānaḥ rājaputrāḥ ca nāgāḥ ca vinipātitāḥ
21. raṇe tvayā sarve dhṛtarāṣṭrasutāḥ vinihatāḥ
ca rājānaḥ ca rājaputrāḥ ca nāgāḥ vinipātitāḥ
21. In battle, all the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra were slain by you. Kings, princes, and elephants were also felled.
कलिङ्गा मागधाः प्राच्या गान्धाराः कुरवस्तथा ।
त्वामासाद्य महायुद्धे निहताः पाण्डुनन्दन ॥२२॥
22. kaliṅgā māgadhāḥ prācyā gāndhārāḥ kuravastathā ,
tvāmāsādya mahāyuddhe nihatāḥ pāṇḍunandana.
22. kaliṅgāḥ māgadhāḥ prācyāḥ gāndhārāḥ kuravaḥ
tathā tvām āsādya mahāyuddhe nihatāḥ pāṇḍunandana
22. pāṇḍunandana tathā kaliṅgāḥ māgadhāḥ prācyāḥ
gāndhārāḥ kuravaḥ tvām āsādya mahāyuddhe nihatāḥ
22. O son of Pāṇḍu, the Kaliṅgas, Magadhas, Prācyas, Gandhāras, and also the Kurus, were all slain in the great war after encountering you.
हत्वा दुर्योधनं चापि प्रयच्छोर्वीं ससागराम् ।
धर्मराजाय कौन्तेय यथा विष्णुः शचीपतेः ॥२३॥
23. hatvā duryodhanaṁ cāpi prayacchorvīṁ sasāgarām ,
dharmarājāya kaunteya yathā viṣṇuḥ śacīpateḥ.
23. hatvā duryodhanaṃ ca api prayaccha urvīṃ sasāgarām
dharma-rājāya kaunteya yathā viṣṇuḥ śacī-pateḥ
23. kaunteya duryodhanaṃ hatvā ca api sasāgarām urvīṃ
dharma-rājāya prayaccha yathā viṣṇuḥ śacī-pateḥ
23. O son of Kunti, after killing Duryodhana, you should give the earth with its oceans to Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of righteousness (dharma-rāja), just as Vishnu gave [the worlds back] to Indra, the husband of Śacī.
त्वां च प्राप्य रणे पापो धार्तराष्ट्रो विनङ्क्ष्यति ।
त्वमस्य सक्थिनी भङ्क्त्वा प्रतिज्ञां पारयिष्यसि ॥२४॥
24. tvāṁ ca prāpya raṇe pāpo dhārtarāṣṭro vinaṅkṣyati ,
tvamasya sakthinī bhaṅktvā pratijñāṁ pārayiṣyasi.
24. tvām ca prāpya raṇe pāpaḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ vinaṅkṣyati
tvam asya sakthinī bhaṅktvā pratijñām pārayiṣyasi
24. ca raṇe tvām prāpya pāpaḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ vinaṅkṣyati
tvam asya sakthinī bhaṅktvā pratijñām pārayiṣyasi
24. When the wicked son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana) encounters you in battle, he will be destroyed. You will fulfill your solemn vow by breaking his two thighs.
यत्नेन तु सदा पार्थ योद्धव्यो धृतराष्ट्रजः ।
कृती च बलवांश्चैव युद्धशौण्डश्च नित्यदा ॥२५॥
25. yatnena tu sadā pārtha yoddhavyo dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ ,
kṛtī ca balavāṁścaiva yuddhaśauṇḍaśca nityadā.
25. yatnena tu sadā pārtha yoddhavyaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ
kṛtī ca balavān ca eva yuddha-śauṇḍaḥ ca nityadā
25. pārtha tu sadā yatnena dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ yoddhavyaḥ
ca kṛtī ca balavān eva ca yuddha-śauṇḍaḥ nityadā
25. But, O son of Pṛthā (Arjuna), the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana) must always be fought with great effort, for he is skilled, mighty, and perpetually devoted to battle.
ततस्तु सात्यकी राजन्पूजयामास पाण्डवम् ।
विविधाभिश्च तां वाग्भिः पूजयामास माधवः ॥२६॥
26. tatastu sātyakī rājanpūjayāmāsa pāṇḍavam ,
vividhābhiśca tāṁ vāgbhiḥ pūjayāmāsa mādhavaḥ.
26. tatas tu sātyakī rājan pūjayām āsa pāṇḍavam
vividhābhiḥ ca tam vāgbhiḥ pūjayām āsa mādhavaḥ
26. rājan tatas tu sātyakī pāṇḍavam pūjayām āsa ca
mādhavaḥ vividhābhiḥ vāgbhiḥ tam pūjayām āsa
26. Then, O King, Satyaki indeed honored the son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna). And Madhava (Krishna) also honored him with various words.
पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवेयाश्च धर्मराजपुरोगमाः ।
तद्वचो भीमसेनस्य सर्व एवाभ्यपूजयन् ॥२७॥
27. pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍaveyāśca dharmarājapurogamāḥ ,
tadvaco bhīmasenasya sarva evābhyapūjayan.
27. pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍaveyāḥ ca dharmarājapurogamāḥ
tat vacaḥ bhīmasenasya sarve eva abhyapūjayan
27. pāñcālāḥ ca pāṇḍaveyāḥ dharmarājapurogamāḥ
sarve eva bhīmasenasya tat vacaḥ abhyapūjayan
27. The Pāñcālas and the Pāṇḍavas, with King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharma-rāja) at their forefront, all heartily approved of Bhīmasena's speech.
ततो भीमबलो भीमो युधिष्ठिरमथाब्रवीत् ।
सृञ्जयैः सह तिष्ठन्तं तपन्तमिव भास्करम् ॥२८॥
28. tato bhīmabalo bhīmo yudhiṣṭhiramathābravīt ,
sṛñjayaiḥ saha tiṣṭhantaṁ tapantamiva bhāskaram.
28. tataḥ bhīmabalaḥ bhīmaḥ yudhiṣṭhiram atha abravīt
sṛñjayaiḥ saha tiṣṭhantam tapantam iva bhāskaram
28. tataḥ bhīmabalaḥ bhīmaḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha tiṣṭhantam
tapantam iva bhāskaram yudhiṣṭhiram atha abravīt
28. Then, Bhīma, mighty in strength, addressed Yudhiṣṭhira, who stood with the Sṛñjayas, radiant like the sun.
अहमेतेन संगम्य संयुगे योद्धुमुत्सहे ।
न हि शक्तो रणे जेतुं मामेष पुरुषाधमः ॥२९॥
29. ahametena saṁgamya saṁyuge yoddhumutsahe ,
na hi śakto raṇe jetuṁ māmeṣa puruṣādhamaḥ.
29. aham etena saṅgamya saṃyuge yoddhum utsahe na
hi śaktaḥ raṇe jetum mām eṣaḥ puruṣādhamaḥ
29. aham etena saṃyuge saṅgamya yoddhum utsahe
eṣaḥ puruṣādhamaḥ hi mām raṇe jetum na śaktaḥ
29. I am eager to engage him in battle. Indeed, this lowest of men (puruṣādhama) is certainly not capable of defeating me in combat.
अद्य क्रोधं विमोक्ष्यामि निहितं हृदये भृशम् ।
सुयोधने धार्तराष्ट्रे खाण्डवेऽग्निमिवार्जुनः ॥३०॥
30. adya krodhaṁ vimokṣyāmi nihitaṁ hṛdaye bhṛśam ,
suyodhane dhārtarāṣṭre khāṇḍave'gnimivārjunaḥ.

30. adya aham hṛdaye bhṛśam nihitam krodham suyodhane dhārtarāṣṭre

30. Today, I shall release the immense anger (krodha) that has been deeply harbored in my heart, directing it at Suyodhana, son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, just as Arjuna unleashed fire upon the Khāṇḍava forest.
शल्यमद्योद्धरिष्यामि तव पाण्डव हृच्छयम् ।
निहत्य गदया पापमद्य राजन्सुखी भव ॥३१॥
31. śalyamadyoddhariṣyāmi tava pāṇḍava hṛcchayam ,
nihatya gadayā pāpamadya rājansukhī bhava.
31. śalyam adya uddhariṣyāmi tava pāṇḍava hṛcchayam
nihitya gadayā pāpam adya rājan sukhī bhava
31. pāṇḍava rājan adya tava hṛcchayam śalyam

31. O son of Pāṇḍu, today I will extract this dart that lies within your heart. Having struck down the wicked one with my mace today, O King, be happy.
अद्य कीर्तिमयीं मालां प्रतिमोक्ष्ये तवानघ ।
प्राणाञ्श्रियं च राज्यं च मोक्ष्यतेऽद्य सुयोधनः ॥३२॥
32. adya kīrtimayīṁ mālāṁ pratimokṣye tavānagha ,
prāṇāñśriyaṁ ca rājyaṁ ca mokṣyate'dya suyodhanaḥ.
32. adya kīrtimayīm mālām pratimokṣye tava anagha
prāṇān śriyam ca rājyam ca mokṣyate adya suyodhanaḥ
32. anagha adya tava kīrtimayīm mālām pratimokṣye adya

32. O sinless one, today I will present to you a glorious garland of fame. Today, Duryodhana will abandon his life, prosperity, and kingdom.
राजा च धृतराष्ट्रोऽद्य श्रुत्वा पुत्रं मया हतम् ।
स्मरिष्यत्यशुभं कर्म यत्तच्छकुनिबुद्धिजम् ॥३३॥
33. rājā ca dhṛtarāṣṭro'dya śrutvā putraṁ mayā hatam ,
smariṣyatyaśubhaṁ karma yattacchakunibuddhijam.
33. rājā ca dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ adya śrutvā putram mayā hatam
smariṣyati aśubham karma yat tat śakunibuddhijam
33. ca adya rājā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mayā putram hatam śrutvā

33. And today, King Dhritarashtra, upon hearing that his son has been killed by me, will recall that inauspicious action (karma) which arose from Shakuni's intellect.
इत्युक्त्वा भरतश्रेष्ठो गदामुद्यम्य वीर्यवान् ।
उदतिष्ठत युद्धाय शक्रो वृत्रमिवाह्वयन् ॥३४॥
34. ityuktvā bharataśreṣṭho gadāmudyamya vīryavān ,
udatiṣṭhata yuddhāya śakro vṛtramivāhvayan.
34. iti uktvā bharataśreṣṭhaḥ gadām udyamya vīryavān
udatiṣṭhata yuddhāya śakraḥ vṛtram iva āhvayan
34. iti uktvā gadām udyamya vīryavān bharataśreṣṭhaḥ

34. Having spoken thus, the valiant best of the Bharatas (Bhima), raising his mace, rose up for battle, just as Indra challenges Vritra.
तमेकाकिनमासाद्य धार्तराष्ट्रं महाबलम् ।
निर्यूथमिव मातङ्गं समहृष्यन्त पाण्डवाः ॥३५॥
35. tamekākinamāsādya dhārtarāṣṭraṁ mahābalam ,
niryūthamiva mātaṅgaṁ samahṛṣyanta pāṇḍavāḥ.
35. tam ekākinam āsādya dhārtarāṣṭram mahābalam
niryūtham iva mātaṅgam samahṛṣyanta pāṇḍavāḥ
35. pāṇḍavāḥ ekākinam mahābalam dhārtarāṣṭram tam

35. When they found that very powerful son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana) alone, like an elephant separated from its herd, the Pāṇḍavas greatly rejoiced.
तमुद्यतगदं दृष्ट्वा कैलासमिव शृङ्गिणम् ।
भीमसेनस्तदा राजन्दुर्योधनमथाब्रवीत् ॥३६॥
36. tamudyatagadaṁ dṛṣṭvā kailāsamiva śṛṅgiṇam ,
bhīmasenastadā rājanduryodhanamathābravīt.
36. tam udyatagadam dṛṣṭvā kailāsam iva śṛṅgiṇam
bhīmasenaḥ tadā rājan duryodhanam atha abravīt
36. rājan tadā bhīmasenaḥ udyatagadam śṛṅgiṇam

36. O King, when Bhīmasena saw Duryodhana with his mace raised, appearing like a peaked Mount Kailāsa, he then addressed him.
राज्ञापि धृतराष्ट्रेण त्वया चास्मासु यत्कृतम् ।
स्मर तद्दुष्कृतं कर्म यद्वृत्तं वारणावते ॥३७॥
37. rājñāpi dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa tvayā cāsmāsu yatkṛtam ,
smara tadduṣkṛtaṁ karma yadvṛttaṁ vāraṇāvate.
37. rājñā api dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa tvayā ca asmāsu yat kṛtam
smara tat duṣkṛtam karma yat vṛttam vāraṇāvate
37. (tvam) rājñā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa api ca tvayā asmāsu yat kṛtam
(tat) tat duṣkṛtam karma yat vāraṇāvate vṛttam (tat) smara
37. Remember that wicked deed (karma) which was perpetrated against us by King Dhṛtarāṣṭra and by you, specifically what happened in Vāraṇāvata.
द्रौपदी च परिक्लिष्टा सभामध्ये रजस्वला ।
द्यूते यद्विजितो राजा शकुनेर्बुद्धिनिश्चयात् ॥३८॥
38. draupadī ca parikliṣṭā sabhāmadhye rajasvalā ,
dyūte yadvijito rājā śakunerbuddhiniścayāt.

dyūte yat vijitaḥ rājā śakuneḥ buddhiniscayāt

38. And (remember also) Draupadī, who was humiliated in the midst of the assembly while menstruating, and how the king (Yudhiṣṭhira) was defeated in the dice game due to Śakuni's clever plotting.
यानि चान्यानि दुष्टात्मन्पापानि कृतवानसि ।
अनागःसु च पार्थेषु तस्य पश्य महत्फलम् ॥३९॥
39. yāni cānyāni duṣṭātmanpāpāni kṛtavānasi ,
anāgaḥsu ca pārtheṣu tasya paśya mahatphalam.
39. yāni ca anyāni duṣṭātman pāpāni kṛtavān asi
anāgassu ca pārtheṣu tasya paśya mahat phalam
39. duṣṭātman yāni ca anyāni pāpāni anāgassu
pārtheṣu kṛtavān asi tasya mahat phalam paśya
39. O wicked-minded one, behold the great consequence of all those other sins that you have committed against the innocent sons of Pṛthā.
त्वत्कृते निहतः शेते शरतल्पे महायशाः ।
गाङ्गेयो भरतश्रेष्ठः सर्वेषां नः पितामहः ॥४०॥
40. tvatkṛte nihataḥ śete śaratalpe mahāyaśāḥ ,
gāṅgeyo bharataśreṣṭhaḥ sarveṣāṁ naḥ pitāmahaḥ.
40. tvatkṛte nihataḥ śete śaratālpe mahāyaśāḥ
gāṅgeyaḥ bharataśreṣṭhaḥ sarveṣām naḥ pitāmahaḥ

naḥ sarveṣām pitāmahaḥ nihataḥ śaratālpe śete
40. For your sake, the highly renowned Gaṅgeya, the best among the Bharatas and the grandfather of all of us, lies slain on a bed of arrows.
हतो द्रोणश्च कर्णश्च हतः शल्यः प्रतापवान् ।
वैरस्य चादिकर्तासौ शकुनिर्निहतो युधि ॥४१॥
41. hato droṇaśca karṇaśca hataḥ śalyaḥ pratāpavān ,
vairasya cādikartāsau śakunirnihato yudhi.
41. hataḥ droṇaḥ ca karṇaḥ ca hataḥ śalyaḥ pratāpavān
vairasya ca ādikartā asau śakuniḥ nihataḥ yudhi

41. Droṇa and Karṇa have been killed; the mighty Śalya has been killed. And that Śakuni, the instigator of the enmity, has been slain in battle.
भ्रातरस्ते हताः शूराः पुत्राश्च सहसैनिकाः ।
राजानश्च हताः शूराः समरेष्वनिवर्तिनः ॥४२॥
42. bhrātaraste hatāḥ śūrāḥ putrāśca sahasainikāḥ ,
rājānaśca hatāḥ śūrāḥ samareṣvanivartinaḥ.
42. bhrātaraḥ te hatāḥ śūrāḥ putrāḥ ca sahasainikāḥ
rājānaḥ ca hatāḥ śūrāḥ samareṣu anivartinaḥ
42. te śūrāḥ bhrātaraḥ hatāḥ ca putrāḥ sahasainikāḥ
ca śūrāḥ anivartinaḥ rājānaḥ samareṣu hatāḥ
42. Your brave brothers have been killed, and your sons, along with their soldiers. Also slain are your brave kings, who never retreated in battles.
एते चान्ये च निहता बहवः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ।
प्रातिकामी तथा पापो द्रौपद्याः क्लेशकृद्धतः ॥४३॥
43. ete cānye ca nihatā bahavaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ,
prātikāmī tathā pāpo draupadyāḥ kleśakṛddhataḥ.
43. ete ca anye ca nihatāḥ bahavaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ
prātikāmī tathā pāpaḥ draupadyāḥ kleśakṛt hataḥ
43. ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ nihatāḥ
tathā pāpaḥ draupadyāḥ kleśakṛt prātikāmī hataḥ
43. These and many other foremost warriors (kṣatriya) have been slain. And the sinful Prātikāmī, who caused distress to Draupadī, has also been killed.
अवशिष्टस्त्वमेवैकः कुलघ्नोऽधमपूरुषः ।
त्वामप्यद्य हनिष्यामि गदया नात्र संशयः ॥४४॥
44. avaśiṣṭastvamevaikaḥ kulaghno'dhamapūruṣaḥ ,
tvāmapyadya haniṣyāmi gadayā nātra saṁśayaḥ.
44. avaśiṣṭaḥ tvam eva ekaḥ kulaghnaḥ adhamapuruṣaḥ
tvām api adya haniṣyāmi gadayā na atra saṃśayaḥ
44. ekaḥ kulaghnaḥ adhamapuruṣaḥ tvam eva avaśiṣṭaḥ
adya tvām api gadayā haniṣyāmi atra saṃśayaḥ na
44. You alone remain, the destroyer of your family (kula), an ignoble person (puruṣa). Today I will also kill you with a mace; there is no doubt about this.
अद्य तेऽहं रणे दर्पं सर्वं नाशयिता नृप ।
राज्याशां विपुलां राजन्पाण्डवेषु च दुष्कृतम् ॥४५॥
45. adya te'haṁ raṇe darpaṁ sarvaṁ nāśayitā nṛpa ,
rājyāśāṁ vipulāṁ rājanpāṇḍaveṣu ca duṣkṛtam.
45. adya te aham raṇe darpam sarvam nāśayitā nṛpa
rājyāśām vipulām rājan pāṇḍaveṣu ca duṣkṛtam
45. nṛpa adya aham raṇe te sarvam darpam nāśayitā
rājan vipulām rājyāśām ca pāṇḍaveṣu duṣkṛtam
45. O king (nṛpa), today in battle I will destroy all your pride (darpa). O king (rājan), (I will destroy) your immense hope for a kingdom, and the wrongdoing you inflicted upon the Pāṇḍavas.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
किं कत्थितेन बहुधा युध्यस्वाद्य मया सह ।
अद्य तेऽहं विनेष्यामि युद्धश्रद्धां वृकोदर ॥४६॥
46. duryodhana uvāca ,
kiṁ katthitena bahudhā yudhyasvādya mayā saha ,
adya te'haṁ vineṣyāmi yuddhaśraddhāṁ vṛkodara.
46. duryodhana uvāca kim katthitena bahudhā yudhyasva adya
mayā saha adya te aham vineṣyāmi yuddhaśraddhām vṛkodara

46. Duryodhana said: What is the point of so much boasting? Fight with me today! Today, O Vṛkodara, I will remove your eagerness for battle (yuddha-śraddhā).
किं न पश्यसि मां पाप गदायुद्धे व्यवस्थितम् ।
हिमवच्छिखराकारां प्रगृह्य महतीं गदाम् ॥४७॥
47. kiṁ na paśyasi māṁ pāpa gadāyuddhe vyavasthitam ,
himavacchikharākārāṁ pragṛhya mahatīṁ gadām.
47. kim na paśyasi mām pāpa gadāyuddhe vyavasthitam
himavacchikharākārām pragṛhya mahatīm gadām
47. pāpa kim mām gadāyuddhe vyavasthitam

47. O wicked one, why do you not see me, standing ready for a mace-fight, holding a mighty mace that resembles the peak of the Himalayas?
गदिनं कोऽद्य मां पाप जेतुमुत्सहते रिपुः ।
न्यायतो युध्यमानस्य देवेष्वपि पुरंदरः ॥४८॥
48. gadinaṁ ko'dya māṁ pāpa jetumutsahate ripuḥ ,
nyāyato yudhyamānasya deveṣvapi puraṁdaraḥ.
48. gadinam kaḥ adya mām pāpa jetum utsahate ripuḥ
nyāyataḥ yudhyamānasya deveṣu api purandaraḥ
48. pāpa adya mām gadinam jetum kaḥ ripuḥ utsahate
nyāyataḥ yudhyamānasya deveṣu api purandaraḥ
48. O wicked one, what enemy today dares to conquer me, who wield a mace? Not even Purandara [Indra] among the gods dares to, if I fight justly.
मा वृथा गर्ज कौन्तेय शारदाभ्रमिवाजलम् ।
दर्शयस्व बलं युद्धे यावत्तत्तेऽद्य विद्यते ॥४९॥
49. mā vṛthā garja kaunteya śāradābhramivājalam ,
darśayasva balaṁ yuddhe yāvattatte'dya vidyate.

darśayasva balam yuddhe yāvat tat te adya vidyate
49. kaunteya ajalam śāradābhram iva vṛthā mā garja

49. O son of Kunti, do not roar in vain like a waterless autumn cloud. Show your strength in battle, whatever you possess today.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा पाञ्चालाः सहसृञ्जयाः ।
सर्वे संपूजयामासुस्तद्वचो विजिगीषवः ॥५०॥
50. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā pāñcālāḥ sahasṛñjayāḥ ,
sarve saṁpūjayāmāsustadvaco vijigīṣavaḥ.
50. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā pāñcālāḥ saha-sṛñjayāḥ
sarve saṁpūjayāmāsuḥ tat vacaḥ vijigīṣavaḥ
50. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā vijigīṣavaḥ saha-sṛñjayāḥ
sarve pāñcālāḥ tat vacaḥ saṁpūjayāmāsuḥ
50. Hearing those words of his, all the Pañcālas, along with the Sṛñjayas, desiring victory, thoroughly honored those words.
तं मत्तमिव मातङ्गं तलशब्देन मानवाः ।
भूयः संहर्षयामासू राजन्दुर्योधनं नृपम् ॥५१॥
51. taṁ mattamiva mātaṅgaṁ talaśabdena mānavāḥ ,
bhūyaḥ saṁharṣayāmāsū rājanduryodhanaṁ nṛpam.
51. tam mattam iva mātaṅgam talaśabdena mānavāḥ
bhūyaḥ saṃharṣayāmāsū rājan duryodhanam nṛpam
51. rājan mānavāḥ talaśabdena mattam iva mātaṅgam

51. O King, the men further cheered King Duryodhana, who was like an intoxicated elephant, with the sound of their palms.
बृंहन्ति कुञ्जरास्तत्र हया हेषन्ति चासकृत् ।
शस्त्राणि संप्रदीप्यन्ते पाण्डवानां जयैषिणाम् ॥५२॥
52. bṛṁhanti kuñjarāstatra hayā heṣanti cāsakṛt ,
śastrāṇi saṁpradīpyante pāṇḍavānāṁ jayaiṣiṇām.
52. bṛṃhanti kuñjarāḥ tatra hayāḥ heṣanti ca asakṛt
śastrāṇi saṃpradīpyante pāṇḍavānām jayaiṣiṇām

pāṇḍavānām jayaiṣiṇām śastrāṇi saṃpradīpyante
52. There, elephants trumpeted, and horses neighed repeatedly. The weapons of the Pandavas, who desired victory, shone brightly.
