कुन्त्युवाच ।
भगवञ्श्वशुरो मेऽसि दैवतस्यापि दैवतम् ।
स मे देवातिदेवस्त्वं शृणु सत्यां गिरं मम ॥१॥
1. kuntyuvāca ,
bhagavañśvaśuro me'si daivatasyāpi daivatam ,
sa me devātidevastvaṁ śṛṇu satyāṁ giraṁ mama.
1. kuntī uvāca bhagavan śvaśuraḥ me asi devatasya api
devatam saḥ me devātidevaḥ tvam śṛṇu satyām giram mama
1. kuntī uvāca bhagavan tvam me śvaśuraḥ asi,
devatasya api devatam (asi) sa tvam me devātidevaḥ mama satyām giram śṛṇu
1. Kunti said: 'O venerable one, you are my father-in-law, indeed the very deity of deities. You are to me that supreme deity. Please listen to my truthful words.'
तपस्वी कोपनो विप्रो दुर्वासा नाम मे पितुः ।
भिक्षामुपागतो भोक्तुं तमहं पर्यतोषयम् ॥२॥
2. tapasvī kopano vipro durvāsā nāma me pituḥ ,
bhikṣāmupāgato bhoktuṁ tamahaṁ paryatoṣayam.
2. tapasvī kopanaḥ vipraḥ durvāsā nāma me pituḥ
bhikṣām upāgataḥ bhoktum tam aham paryatoṣayam
2. me pituḥ nāma tapasvī kopanaḥ vipraḥ durvāsā
bhikṣām bhoktum upāgataḥ aham tam paryatoṣayam
2. There was an ascetic, an irritable Brahmin named Durvasa by name, who came to my father's house seeking alms for a meal. I completely satisfied him.
शौचेन त्वागसस्त्यागैः शुद्धेन मनसा तथा ।
कोपस्थानेष्वपि महत्स्वकुप्यं न कदाचन ॥३॥
3. śaucena tvāgasastyāgaiḥ śuddhena manasā tathā ,
kopasthāneṣvapi mahatsvakupyaṁ na kadācana.
3. śaucena tu āgasaḥ tyāgaiḥ śuddhena manasā tathā
kopasthāneṣu api mahatsu akupyām na kadācana
3. tu śaucena śuddhena manasā tathā āgasaḥ tyāgaiḥ,
mahatsu kopasthāneṣu api aham kadācana na akupyām
3. Indeed, with purity and a pure mind, and by avoiding all offenses, I never became angry, even in very difficult situations that would provoke great rage.
स मे वरमदात्प्रीतः कृतमित्यहमब्रुवम् ।
अवश्यं ते ग्रहीतव्यमिति मां सोऽब्रवीद्वचः ॥४॥
4. sa me varamadātprītaḥ kṛtamityahamabruvam ,
avaśyaṁ te grahītavyamiti māṁ so'bravīdvacaḥ.
4. saḥ me varam adat prītaḥ kṛtam iti aham abruvam
avaśyam te grahītavyam iti mām saḥ abravīt vacaḥ
4. saḥ prītaḥ me varam adat aham kṛtam iti abruvam
saḥ mām avaśyam te grahītavyam iti vacaḥ abravīt
4. Being pleased, he gave me a boon. I said, 'It is accomplished.' But he spoke these words to me: 'It must certainly be accepted by you.'
ततः शापभयाद्विप्रमवोचं पुनरेव तम् ।
एवमस्त्विति च प्राह पुनरेव स मां द्विजः ॥५॥
5. tataḥ śāpabhayādvipramavocaṁ punareva tam ,
evamastviti ca prāha punareva sa māṁ dvijaḥ.
5. tataḥ śāpabhayāt vipram avocam punaḥ eva tam
evam astu iti ca prāha punaḥ eva saḥ mām dvijaḥ
5. tataḥ śāpabhayāt aham tam vipram punaḥ eva avocam
ca saḥ dvijaḥ mām evam astu iti punaḥ eva prāha
5. Then, out of fear of a curse, I spoke to that brahmin again. And that brahmin, in turn, said to me, 'So be it.'
धर्मस्य जननी भद्रे भवित्री त्वं वरानने ।
वशे स्थास्यन्ति ते देवा यांस्त्वमावाहयिष्यसि ॥६॥
6. dharmasya jananī bhadre bhavitrī tvaṁ varānane ,
vaśe sthāsyanti te devā yāṁstvamāvāhayiṣyasi.
6. dharmasya jananī bhadre bhavitrī tvam varānanā
vaśe sthāsyanti te devāḥ yān tvam āvāhayiṣyasi
6. bhadre varānanā tvam dharmasya jananī bhavitrī
yān devāḥ tvam āvāhayiṣyasi te vaśe sthāsyanti
6. O gentle lady, O beautiful-faced one, you will be the mother of natural law (dharma). The gods whom you invoke will remain under your control.
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्हितो विप्रस्ततोऽहं विस्मिताभवम् ।
न च सर्वास्ववस्थासु स्मृतिर्मे विप्रणश्यति ॥७॥
7. ityuktvāntarhito viprastato'haṁ vismitābhavam ,
na ca sarvāsvavasthāsu smṛtirme vipraṇaśyati.
7. iti uktvā antarhitaḥ vipraḥ tataḥ aham vismitā
abhavam na ca sarvāsu avasthāsu smṛtiḥ me vipraṇaśyati
7. iti uktvā vipraḥ antarhitaḥ tataḥ aham vismitā
abhavam ca me smṛtiḥ sarvāsu avasthāsu na vipraṇaśyati
7. Having said this, the brahmin disappeared. Then I was astonished. And my memory does not diminish in any situation.
अथ हर्म्यतलस्थाहं रविमुद्यन्तमीक्षती ।
संस्मृत्य तदृषेर्वाक्यं स्पृहयन्ती दिवाकरम् ।
स्थिताहं बालभावेन तत्र दोषमबुध्यती ॥८॥
8. atha harmyatalasthāhaṁ ravimudyantamīkṣatī ,
saṁsmṛtya tadṛṣervākyaṁ spṛhayantī divākaram ,
sthitāhaṁ bālabhāvena tatra doṣamabudhyatī.
8. atha harmyatalasthā aham ravim
udyantam īkṣatī saṃsmṛtya tad ṛṣeḥ
vākyam spṛhayantī divākaram sthitā
aham bālabhāvena tatra doṣam abudhyatī
8. atha aham harmyatalasthā udyantam
ravim īkṣatī tad ṛṣeḥ vākyam saṃsmṛtya
divākaram spṛhayantī aham
bālabhāvena tatra doṣam abudhyatī sthitā
8. Then, I, standing on the palace rooftop, seeing the rising sun, and recalling that sage's words, yearned for the sun. I stood there innocently, unaware of any fault in that act.
अथ देवः सहस्रांशुर्मत्समीपगतोऽभवत् ।
द्विधा कृत्वात्मनो देहं भूमौ च गगनेऽपि च ।
तताप लोकानेकेन द्वितीयेनागमच्च माम् ॥९॥
9. atha devaḥ sahasrāṁśurmatsamīpagato'bhavat ,
dvidhā kṛtvātmano dehaṁ bhūmau ca gagane'pi ca ,
tatāpa lokānekena dvitīyenāgamacca mām.
9. atha devaḥ sahasrāṃśuḥ mat samīpa
gataḥ abhavat dvidhā kṛtvā ātmanaḥ
deham bhūmau ca gagane api ca tatāpa
lokān ekena dvitīyena agamat ca mām
9. atha sahasrāṃśuḥ devaḥ mat samīpa
gataḥ abhavat ātmanaḥ deham dvidhā
kṛtvā ekena bhūmau ca gagane api ca
lokān tatāpa ca dvitīyena mām agamat
9. Then, the thousand-rayed deity (the sun) approached me. Having divided his own essence (ātman) into two forms, one part scorched the worlds on earth and in the sky, while with the second part, he came to me.
स मामुवाच वेपन्तीं वरं मत्तो वृणीष्व ह ।
गम्यतामिति तं चाहं प्रणम्य शिरसावदम् ॥१०॥
10. sa māmuvāca vepantīṁ varaṁ matto vṛṇīṣva ha ,
gamyatāmiti taṁ cāhaṁ praṇamya śirasāvadam.
10. saḥ mām uvāca vepantīm varam mattaḥ vṛṇīṣva ha
gamyatām iti tam ca aham praṇamya śirasā avadam
10. saḥ vepantīm mām uvāca varam mattaḥ vṛṇīṣva ha
ca aham tam śirasā praṇamya gamyatām iti avadam
10. He said to me, who was trembling, 'Choose a boon from me.' And I, bowing my head to him, replied, 'You may depart.'
स मामुवाच तिग्मांशुर्वृथाह्वानं न ते क्षमम् ।
धक्ष्यामि त्वां च विप्रं च येन दत्तो वरस्तव ॥११॥
11. sa māmuvāca tigmāṁśurvṛthāhvānaṁ na te kṣamam ,
dhakṣyāmi tvāṁ ca vipraṁ ca yena datto varastava.
11. saḥ mām uvāca tigmāṃśuḥ vṛthā āhvānam na te kṣamam
dhakṣyāmi tvām ca vipram ca yena dattaḥ varaḥ tava
11. tigmāṃśuḥ saḥ mām uvāca te vṛthā āhvānam na kṣamam
dhakṣyāmi tvām ca vipram ca yena tava varaḥ dattaḥ
11. That radiant deity (the sun) said to me, 'Your futile invocation is not appropriate for you. I will burn you and also the Brahmin by whom this boon was granted to you.'
तमहं रक्षती विप्रं शापादनपराधिनम् ।
पुत्रो मे त्वत्समो देव भवेदिति ततोऽब्रुवम् ॥१२॥
12. tamahaṁ rakṣatī vipraṁ śāpādanaparādhinam ,
putro me tvatsamo deva bhavediti tato'bruvam.
12. tam aham rakṣatī vipram śāpāt anaparādhinam putraḥ
me tvat-samaḥ deva bhavet iti tataḥ abruvam
12. aham tam anaparādhinam vipram śāpāt rakṣatī tataḥ
iti abruvam deva me tvat-samaḥ putraḥ bhavet
12. I protected that innocent Brahmin from the curse. Then I said, 'May a son like you, O god, be born to me.'
ततो मां तेजसाविश्य मोहयित्वा च भानुमान् ।
उवाच भविता पुत्रस्तवेत्यभ्यगमद्दिवम् ॥१३॥
13. tato māṁ tejasāviśya mohayitvā ca bhānumān ,
uvāca bhavitā putrastavetyabhyagamaddivam.
13. tataḥ mām tejasā āviśya mohayitvā ca bhānumān
uvāca bhavitā putraḥ tava iti abhyagamat divam
13. tataḥ bhānumān tejasā mām āviśya ca mohayitvā
iti uvāca tava putraḥ bhavitā ca divam abhyagamat
13. Then, entering me with his splendor (tejas) and bewildering me, the sun-god (Bhānumān) said, 'You will have a son,' and then departed to heaven.
ततोऽहमन्तर्भवने पितुर्वृत्तान्तरक्षिणी ।
गूढोत्पन्नं सुतं बालं जले कर्णमवासृजम् ॥१४॥
14. tato'hamantarbhavane piturvṛttāntarakṣiṇī ,
gūḍhotpannaṁ sutaṁ bālaṁ jale karṇamavāsṛjam.
14. tataḥ aham antaḥ-bhavane pituḥ vṛttāntara-rakṣiṇī
gūḍha-utpannam sutam bālam jale karṇam avāsṛjam
14. tataḥ aham pituḥ antaḥ-bhavane vṛttāntara-rakṣiṇī
gūḍha-utpannam bālam sutam karṇam jale avāsṛjam
14. Then, within my father's house, concealing the event, I released my secretly born son, the baby Karṇa, into the water.
नूनं तस्यैव देवस्य प्रसादात्पुनरेव तु ।
कन्याहमभवं विप्र यथा प्राह स मामृषिः ॥१५॥
15. nūnaṁ tasyaiva devasya prasādātpunareva tu ,
kanyāhamabhavaṁ vipra yathā prāha sa māmṛṣiḥ.
15. nūnam tasya eva devasya prasādāt punaḥ eva tu
kanyā aham abhavam vipra yathā prāha sa mām ṛṣiḥ
15. vipra nūnam tasya eva devasya prasādāt punaḥ eva
tu aham kanyā abhavam yathā sa ṛṣiḥ mām prāha
15. Certainly, O Brahmin, by the grace of that very god, I became a maiden again, just as that sage had told me.
स मया मूढया पुत्रो ज्ञायमानोऽप्युपेक्षितः ।
तन्मां दहति विप्रर्षे यथा सुविदितं तव ॥१६॥
16. sa mayā mūḍhayā putro jñāyamāno'pyupekṣitaḥ ,
tanmāṁ dahati viprarṣe yathā suviditaṁ tava.
16. sa mayā mūḍhayā putraḥ jñāyamānaḥ api upekṣitaḥ
tat mām dahati viprarṣe yathā suviditam tava
16. mayā mūḍhayā sa putraḥ jñāyamānaḥ api upekṣitaḥ
tat mām dahati yathā tava suviditam viprarṣe
16. Though I knew he was my son, I, being deluded, neglected him. That (neglect) now burns me, O sage among brahmins, as is well known to you.
यदि पापमपापं वा तदेतद्विवृतं मया ।
तन्मे भयं त्वं भगवन्व्यपनेतुमिहार्हसि ॥१७॥
17. yadi pāpamapāpaṁ vā tadetadvivṛtaṁ mayā ,
tanme bhayaṁ tvaṁ bhagavanvyapanetumihārhasi.
17. yadi pāpam apāpam vā tat etat vivṛtam mayā tat
me bhayam tvam bhagavan vyapanetum iha arhasi
17. yadi etat pāpam apāpam vā tat mayā vivṛtam tat
tvam bhagavan me bhayam iha vyapanetum arhasi
17. Whether this was a sin or not a sin, it has now been revealed by me. Therefore, O revered one (bhagavan), you should remove my fear here.
यच्चास्य राज्ञो विदितं हृदिस्थं भवतोऽनघ ।
तं चायं लभतां काममद्यैव मुनिसत्तम ॥१८॥
18. yaccāsya rājño viditaṁ hṛdisthaṁ bhavato'nagha ,
taṁ cāyaṁ labhatāṁ kāmamadyaiva munisattama.
18. yat ca asya rājñaḥ viditam hṛdistham bhavataḥ anagha
tam ca ayam labhatām kāmam adya eva munisattama
18. anagha yat ca asya rājñaḥ hṛdistham bhavataḥ viditam
ca ayam tam kāmam adya eva labhatām munisattama
18. And that which is known to you, O faultless one, to reside in this king's heart, let him (the king) obtain that very desire today itself, O best of sages.
इत्युक्तः प्रत्युवाचेदं व्यासो वेदविदां वरः ।
साधु सर्वमिदं तथ्यमेवमेव यथात्थ माम् ॥१९॥
19. ityuktaḥ pratyuvācedaṁ vyāso vedavidāṁ varaḥ ,
sādhu sarvamidaṁ tathyamevameva yathāttha mām.
19. iti uktaḥ pratyuvāca idam vyāsaḥ vedavidām varaḥ
sādhu sarvam idam tathyam evam eva yathā āttha mām
19. iti uktaḥ vedavidām varaḥ vyāsaḥ idam pratyuvāca
sādhu sarvam idam tathyam evam eva yathā mām āttha
19. Thus addressed, Vyāsa, the foremost among the knowers of the Vedas, replied with these words: 'Excellent! All this is true, precisely as you have stated to me.'
अपराधश्च ते नास्ति कन्याभावं गता ह्यसि ।
देवाश्चैश्वर्यवन्तो वै शरीराण्याविशन्ति वै ॥२०॥
20. aparādhaśca te nāsti kanyābhāvaṁ gatā hyasi ,
devāścaiśvaryavanto vai śarīrāṇyāviśanti vai.
20. aparādhaḥ ca te na asti kanyābhāvam gatā hi asi
devāḥ ca aiśvaryavantaḥ vai śarīrāṇi āviśanti vai
20. te aparādhaḥ ca na asti hi kanyābhāvam gatā asi devāḥ
ca aiśvaryavantaḥ vai (santī) vai śarīrāṇi āviśanti
20. There is no fault on your part, for you have indeed returned to the state of a maiden. The gods, being possessors of great power, certainly enter bodies.
सन्ति देवनिकायाश्च संकल्पाज्जनयन्ति ये ।
वाचा दृष्ट्या तथा स्पर्शात्संघर्षेणेति पञ्चधा ॥२१॥
21. santi devanikāyāśca saṁkalpājjanayanti ye ,
vācā dṛṣṭyā tathā sparśātsaṁgharṣeṇeti pañcadhā.
21. santi devanikāyāḥ ca saṅkalpāt janayanti ye vācā
dṛṣṭyā tathā sparśāt saṅgharṣeṇa iti pañcadhā
21. ye saṅkalpāt janayanti devanikāyāḥ ca santi vācā dṛṣṭyā
tathā sparśāt saṅgharṣeṇa iti pañcadhā (bhavanti)
21. There are indeed groups of gods who generate (offspring) through sheer resolve (saṅkalpa). This occurs in five ways: by speech, by sight, also by touch, and by embrace.
मनुष्यधर्मो दैवेन धर्मेण न हि युज्यते ।
इति कुन्ति व्यजानीहि व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥२२॥
22. manuṣyadharmo daivena dharmeṇa na hi yujyate ,
iti kunti vyajānīhi vyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ.
22. manuṣyadharmaḥ daivena dharmeṇa na hi yujyate
iti kunti vyajānīhi vyetu te mānasaḥ jvaraḥ
22. manuṣyadharmaḥ daivena dharmeṇa hi na yujyate
iti kunti vyajānīhi te mānasaḥ jvaraḥ vyetu
22. The human natural law (dharma) is indeed not associated with the divine natural law (dharma). Therefore, O Kunti, understand this! Let your mental anguish (jvara) depart.
सर्वं बलवतां पथ्यं सर्वं बलवतां शुचि ।
सर्वं बलवतां धर्मः सर्वं बलवतां स्वकम् ॥२३॥
23. sarvaṁ balavatāṁ pathyaṁ sarvaṁ balavatāṁ śuci ,
sarvaṁ balavatāṁ dharmaḥ sarvaṁ balavatāṁ svakam.
23. sarvam balavatām pathyam sarvam balavatām śuci
sarvam balavatām dharmaḥ sarvam balavatām svakam
23. balavatām sarvam pathyam balavatām sarvam śuci
balavatām sarvam dharmaḥ balavatām sarvam svakam
23. Everything is wholesome for the powerful, everything is pure for the powerful, everything is the natural law (dharma) for the powerful, and everything is their own for the powerful.
