अकृतव्रण उवाच ।
दुःखद्वयमिदं भद्रे कतरस्य चिकीर्षसि ।
प्रतिकर्तव्यमबले तत्त्वं वत्से ब्रवीहि मे ॥१॥

duḥkhadvayamidaṁ bhadre katarasya cikīrṣasi ,

1. Akṛtavraṇa said, "O good lady, this is a two-fold sorrow. Which of the two do you wish to address? O weak one, O dear child, tell me the truth about what needs to be done in response for me."
यदि सौभपतिर्भद्रे नियोक्तव्यो मते तव ।
नियोक्ष्यति महात्मा तं रामस्त्वद्धितकाम्यया ॥२॥
2. yadi saubhapatirbhadre niyoktavyo mate tava ,
niyokṣyati mahātmā taṁ rāmastvaddhitakāmyayā.
2. yadi saubhapatiḥ bhadre niyoktavyaḥ mate tava
niyokṣyati mahātmā tam rāmaḥ tvaddhitakāmyayā
2. bhadre yadi saubhapatiḥ tava mate niyoktavyaḥ

2. O good lady, if in your opinion the lord of Saubha is to be engaged, then the great soul Rāma, desiring your welfare, will engage him.
अथापगेयं भीष्मं तं रामेणेच्छसि धीमता ।
रणे विनिर्जितं द्रष्टुं कुर्यात्तदपि भार्गवः ॥३॥
3. athāpageyaṁ bhīṣmaṁ taṁ rāmeṇecchasi dhīmatā ,
raṇe vinirjitaṁ draṣṭuṁ kuryāttadapi bhārgavaḥ.
3. atha āpageyam bhīṣmam tam rāmeṇa icchasi dhīmatā
raṇe vinirjitam draṣṭum kuryāt tat api bhārgavaḥ
3. atha dhīmatā rāmeṇa tam āpageyam bhīṣmam raṇe
vinirjitam draṣṭum icchasi api bhārgavaḥ tat kuryāt
3. Or if you wish to see that Bhīṣma, the son of Gaṅgā (Āpageya), conquered in battle by the intelligent Rāma, then Bhārgava (Rāma) would also accomplish that.
सृञ्जयस्य वचः श्रुत्वा तव चैव शुचिस्मिते ।
यदत्रानन्तरं कार्यं तदद्यैव विचिन्त्यताम् ॥४॥
4. sṛñjayasya vacaḥ śrutvā tava caiva śucismite ,
yadatrānantaraṁ kāryaṁ tadadyaiva vicintyatām.

atra anantaram kāryam tat adya eva vicintyatām

4. Having heard the words of Sañjaya, and indeed your words too, O pure-smiling lady, whatever is to be done next in this matter, let that be considered today itself.
अम्बोवाच ।
अपनीतास्मि भीष्मेण भगवन्नविजानता ।
न हि जानाति मे भीष्मो ब्रह्मञ्शाल्वगतं मनः ॥५॥
5. ambovāca ,
apanītāsmi bhīṣmeṇa bhagavannavijānatā ,
na hi jānāti me bhīṣmo brahmañśālvagataṁ manaḥ.
5. amba uvāca apanītā asmi bhīṣmeṇa bhagavan avijānatā
na hi jānāti me bhīṣmaḥ brahman śālvagatam manaḥ
5. amba uvāca bhagavan brahman bhīṣmeṇa avijānatā asmi
apanītā hi bhīṣmaḥ me manaḥ śālvagatam na jānāti
5. Amba said, "O revered one, I was carried off by Bhishma, who acted without knowing my true feelings. Indeed, Bhishma does not know, O Brahmana, that my mind is devoted to Salva."
एतद्विचार्य मनसा भवानेव विनिश्चयम् ।
विचिनोतु यथान्यायं विधानं क्रियतां तथा ॥६॥
6. etadvicārya manasā bhavāneva viniścayam ,
vicinotu yathānyāyaṁ vidhānaṁ kriyatāṁ tathā.
6. etat vicārya manasā bhavān eva viniścayam
vicinotu yathānyāyam vidhānam kriyatām tathā
6. bhavān eva etat manasā vicārya yathānyāyam
viniścayam vicinotu tathā vidhānam kriyatām
6. Having considered this mentally, you yourself should make a decision according to what is just. Let the appropriate measure (vidhāna) be taken accordingly.
भीष्मे वा कुरुशार्दूले शाल्वराजेऽथ वा पुनः ।
उभयोरेव वा ब्रह्मन्यद्युक्तं तत्समाचर ॥७॥
7. bhīṣme vā kuruśārdūle śālvarāje'tha vā punaḥ ,
ubhayoreva vā brahmanyadyuktaṁ tatsamācara.
7. bhīṣme vā kuruśārdūle śālvarāje atha vā punaḥ
ubhayoḥ eva vā brahman yat yuktam tat samācara
7. brahman bhīṣme vā kuruśārdūle atha vā śālvarāje
punaḥ vā ubhayoḥ eva yat yuktam tat samācara
7. O Brahmana, whether it is concerning Bhishma, the tiger among the Kurus, or the King of Salva, or indeed regarding both of them, whatever is appropriate, you should act accordingly.
निवेदितं मया ह्येतद्दुःखमूलं यथातथम् ।
विधानं तत्र भगवन्कर्तुमर्हसि युक्तितः ॥८॥
8. niveditaṁ mayā hyetadduḥkhamūlaṁ yathātatham ,
vidhānaṁ tatra bhagavankartumarhasi yuktitaḥ.
8. niveditam mayā hi etat duḥkhamūlam yathātatham
vidhānam tatra bhagavan kartum arhasi yuktitah
8. hi mayā etat duḥkhamūlam yathātatham niveditam
bhagavan tatra vidhānam yuktitah kartum arhasi
8. Indeed, I have truthfully explained this root of my sorrow. O revered one, you ought to take the appropriate action (vidhāna) in this matter with proper reasoning.
अकृतव्रण उवाच ।
उपपन्नमिदं भद्रे यदेवं वरवर्णिनि ।
धर्मं प्रति वचो ब्रूयाः शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥९॥
9. akṛtavraṇa uvāca ,
upapannamidaṁ bhadre yadevaṁ varavarṇini ,
dharmaṁ prati vaco brūyāḥ śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco mama.
9. akṛtavraṇaḥ uvāca upapannam idam bhadre yat evam varavarṇini
dharmam prati vacaḥ brūyāḥ śṛṇu ca idam vacaḥ mama
9. akṛtavraṇaḥ uvāca bhadre varavarṇini yat evam dharmam
prati vacaḥ brūyāḥ idam upapannam ca idam mama vacaḥ śṛṇu
9. Akṛtavraṇa said: "O gracious lady, it is fitting, O fair-complexioned one, that you speak such words regarding (natural law) dharma. Now, listen to these words of mine."
यदि त्वामापगेयो वै न नयेद्गजसाह्वयम् ।
शाल्वस्त्वां शिरसा भीरु गृह्णीयाद्रामचोदितः ॥१०॥
10. yadi tvāmāpageyo vai na nayedgajasāhvayam ,
śālvastvāṁ śirasā bhīru gṛhṇīyādrāmacoditaḥ.
10. yadi tvām āpageyaḥ vai na nayet gajasāhvayam
śālvaḥ tvām śirasā bhīru gṛhṇīyāt rāmacoditaḥ
10. bhīru yadi āpageyaḥ vai tvām gajasāhvayam na
nayet rāmacoditaḥ śālvaḥ tvām śirasā gṛhṇīyāt
10. O timid one, if the son of Gaṅgā (Bhīṣma) indeed does not take you to Hastinapura, then Śālva, incited by Paraśurāma, would accept you by bowing his head.
तेन त्वं निर्जिता भद्रे यस्मान्नीतासि भामिनि ।
संशयः शाल्वराजस्य तेन त्वयि सुमध्यमे ॥११॥
11. tena tvaṁ nirjitā bhadre yasmānnītāsi bhāmini ,
saṁśayaḥ śālvarājasya tena tvayi sumadhyame.
11. tena tvam nirjitā bhadre yasmāt nītā asi bhāmini
saṃśayaḥ śālvarājasya tena tvayi sumadhyame
11. bhadre bhāmini tena tvam nirjitā yasmāt nītā
asi sumadhyame tena śālvarājasya tvayi saṃśayaḥ
11. O gracious lady, you were conquered by him (Bhīṣma) because you were carried away by him, O beautiful lady. Therefore, O slender-waisted one, the king of Śālva has doubts about you.
भीष्मः पुरुषमानी च जितकाशी तथैव च ।
तस्मात्प्रतिक्रिया युक्ता भीष्मे कारयितुं त्वया ॥१२॥
12. bhīṣmaḥ puruṣamānī ca jitakāśī tathaiva ca ,
tasmātpratikriyā yuktā bhīṣme kārayituṁ tvayā.
12. bhīṣmaḥ puruṣamānī ca jitakāśī tathā eva ca
tasmāt pratikriyā yuktā bhīṣme kārayitum tvayā
12. bhīṣmaḥ puruṣamānī ca jitakāśī tathā eva ca
tasmāt tvayā bhīṣme pratikriyā kārayitum yuktā
12. Bhīṣma is conceited and also proud of his victories. Therefore, it is appropriate for you to retaliate against Bhīṣma.
अम्बोवाच ।
ममाप्येष महान्ब्रह्मन्हृदि कामोऽभिवर्तते ।
घातयेयं यदि रणे भीष्ममित्येव नित्यदा ॥१३॥
13. ambovāca ,
mamāpyeṣa mahānbrahmanhṛdi kāmo'bhivartate ,
ghātayeyaṁ yadi raṇe bhīṣmamityeva nityadā.
13. ambā uvāca | mama api eṣa mahān brahman hṛdi kāmaḥ
abhivartate | ghātayeyam yadi raṇe bhīṣmam iti eva nityadā
13. ambā uvāca brahman mama hṛdi eṣa mahān kāmaḥ api
abhivartate yadi raṇe bhīṣmam ghātayeyam iti eva nityadā
13. Amba said: "O Brahmin, this great desire (kāma) also dwells in my heart: that I may always slay Bhishma in battle!"
भीष्मं वा शाल्वराजं वा यं वा दोषेण गच्छसि ।
प्रशाधि तं महाबाहो यत्कृतेऽहं सुदुःखिता ॥१४॥
14. bhīṣmaṁ vā śālvarājaṁ vā yaṁ vā doṣeṇa gacchasi ,
praśādhi taṁ mahābāho yatkṛte'haṁ suduḥkhitā.
14. bhīṣmam vā śālvarājam vā yam vā doṣeṇa gacchasi
| praśādhi tam mahābāho yatkṛte aham suduhkhitā
14. mahābāho yam vā doṣeṇa gacchasi,
bhīṣmam vā śālvarājam vā,
tam praśādhi yatkṛte aham suduhkhitā
14. Whether it is Bhishma, or the King of Salva, or whomever you consider to be at fault, O mighty-armed one, punish him, for whose sake I am extremely distressed.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एवं कथयतामेव तेषां स दिवसो गतः ।
रात्रिश्च भरतश्रेष्ठ सुखशीतोष्णमारुता ॥१५॥
15. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evaṁ kathayatāmeva teṣāṁ sa divaso gataḥ ,
rātriśca bharataśreṣṭha sukhaśītoṣṇamārutā.
15. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca | evam kathayatām eva teṣām sa divasaḥ
gataḥ | rātriḥ ca bharataśreṣṭha sukhaśītoṣṇamārutā
15. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca evaṃ teṣām kathayatām eva sa divasaḥ
gataḥ ca bharataśreṣṭha rātriḥ sukhaśītoṣṇamārutā
15. Bhishma said: "While they were thus speaking, that day passed for them. And the night, O best of Bharatas, had pleasant breezes that were both cool and warm."
ततो रामः प्रादुरासीत्प्रज्वलन्निव तेजसा ।
शिष्यैः परिवृतो राजञ्जटाचीरधरो मुनिः ॥१६॥
16. tato rāmaḥ prādurāsītprajvalanniva tejasā ,
śiṣyaiḥ parivṛto rājañjaṭācīradharo muniḥ.
16. tataḥ rāmaḥ prādur āsīt prajvalan iva tejasā
| śiṣyaiḥ parivṛtaḥ rājan jaṭācīradharaḥ muniḥ
16. rājan tataḥ prajvalan tejasā iva,
śiṣyaiḥ parivṛtaḥ jaṭācīradharaḥ muniḥ rāmaḥ prādur āsīt
16. Then Rama appeared, O King, blazing as if with effulgence, surrounded by his disciples; he was a sage (muni) wearing matted hair and bark garments.
धनुष्पाणिरदीनात्मा खड्गं बिभ्रत्परश्वधी ।
विरजा राजशार्दूल सोऽभ्ययात्सृञ्जयं नृपम् ॥१७॥
17. dhanuṣpāṇiradīnātmā khaḍgaṁ bibhratparaśvadhī ,
virajā rājaśārdūla so'bhyayātsṛñjayaṁ nṛpam.
17. dhanuṣpāṇiḥ adīnātmā khaḍgaṃ bibhrat paraśvadhī
virajā rājaśārdūla saḥ abhyayāt sṛñjayaṃ nṛpam
17. rājaśārdūla virajā dhanuṣpāṇiḥ adīnātmā khaḍgaṃ
paraśvadhī bibhrat saḥ nṛpam sṛñjayaṃ abhyayāt
17. O tiger among kings, Virajā, resolute in spirit (ātman) and carrying a bow, a sword, and an axe, approached King Sṛñjaya.
ततस्तं तापसा दृष्ट्वा स च राजा महातपाः ।
तस्थुः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे सा च कन्या तपस्विनी ॥१८॥
18. tatastaṁ tāpasā dṛṣṭvā sa ca rājā mahātapāḥ ,
tasthuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve sā ca kanyā tapasvinī.
18. tataḥ taṃ tāpasāḥ dṛṣṭvā saḥ ca rājā mahātapāḥ
tasthuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve sā ca kanyā tapasvinī
18. tataḥ taṃ dṛṣṭvā saḥ mahātapāḥ rājā ca te sarve
tāpasāḥ ca sā tapasvinī kanyā ca prāñjalayaḥ tasthuḥ
18. Then, upon seeing him, all those ascetics, along with that king who was a great ascetic (tapas), and that ascetic maiden, stood with folded hands.
पूजयामासुरव्यग्रा मधुपर्केण भार्गवम् ।
अर्चितश्च यथायोगं निषसाद सहैव तैः ॥१९॥
19. pūjayāmāsuravyagrā madhuparkeṇa bhārgavam ,
arcitaśca yathāyogaṁ niṣasāda sahaiva taiḥ.
19. pūjayāmāsuḥ avyagrāḥ madhuparkeṇa bhārgavam
arcitaḥ ca yathāyogaṃ niṣasāda saha eva taiḥ
19. avyagrāḥ (te) bhārgavam madhuparkeṇa pūjayāmāsuḥ
ca arcitaḥ (saḥ) yathāyogaṃ taiḥ saha eva niṣasāda
19. They, undisturbed, worshipped Bhārgava with madhuparka. And, having been honored appropriately, he sat down with them.
ततः पूर्वव्यतीतानि कथयेते स्म तावुभौ ।
सृञ्जयश्च स राजर्षिर्जामदग्न्यश्च भारत ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ pūrvavyatītāni kathayete sma tāvubhau ,
sṛñjayaśca sa rājarṣirjāmadagnyaśca bhārata.
20. tataḥ pūrvavyatītāni kathayete sma tau ubhau
sṛñjayaḥ ca saḥ rājarṣiḥ jāmadagnyaḥ ca bhārata
20. bhārata tataḥ te ubhau saḥ rājarṣiḥ sṛñjayaḥ
ca jāmadagnyaḥ ca pūrvavyatītāni kathayete sma
20. O Bhārata, then those two - King Sṛñjaya, the royal sage (rājarṣi), and Jāmadagnya (Paraśurāma) - recounted past events.
ततः कथान्ते राजर्षिर्भृगुश्रेष्ठं महाबलम् ।
उवाच मधुरं काले रामं वचनमर्थवत् ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ kathānte rājarṣirbhṛguśreṣṭhaṁ mahābalam ,
uvāca madhuraṁ kāle rāmaṁ vacanamarthavat.
21. tataḥ kathānte rājarṣiḥ bhṛguśreṣṭham mahābalam
uvāca madhuram kāle rāmam vacanam arthavat
21. tataḥ kathānte rājarṣiḥ bhṛguśreṣṭham mahābalam
rāmam kāle madhuram arthavat vacanam uvāca
21. Then, at the end of the narrative, the royal sage spoke gentle, meaningful words at the appropriate time to Rāma, the foremost of the Bhṛgu lineage, the mighty one.
रामेयं मम दौहित्री काशिराजसुता प्रभो ।
अस्याः शृणु यथातत्त्वं कार्यं कार्यविशारद ॥२२॥
22. rāmeyaṁ mama dauhitrī kāśirājasutā prabho ,
asyāḥ śṛṇu yathātattvaṁ kāryaṁ kāryaviśārada.
22. rāma iyam mama dauhitrī kāśirājasutā prabho
asyāḥ śṛṇu yathātattvam kāryam kāryaviśārada
22. prabho kāryaviśārada rāma,
iyam mama dauhitrī kāśirājasutā (asti).
asyāḥ kāryam yathātattvam śṛṇu
22. O Lord (prabho) Rāma, this is my granddaughter, the daughter of the King of Kashi. O expert in tasks (kāryaviśārada), listen carefully (yathātattvam) to her matter (kāryam).
परमं कथ्यतां चेति तां रामः प्रत्यभाषत ।
ततः साभ्यगमद्रामं ज्वलन्तमिव पावकम् ॥२३॥
23. paramaṁ kathyatāṁ ceti tāṁ rāmaḥ pratyabhāṣata ,
tataḥ sābhyagamadrāmaṁ jvalantamiva pāvakam.
23. paramam kathyatām ca iti tām rāmaḥ pratyabhāṣata
tataḥ sā abhyagamat rāmam jvalantam iva pāvakam
23. rāmaḥ tām "paramam ca iti kathyatām" pratyabhāṣata.
tataḥ sā jvalantam pāvakam iva rāmam abhyagamat
23. “Let the most important thing be told,” thus Rāma replied to her. Then she approached Rāma, who was blazing like fire.
सा चाभिवाद्य चरणौ रामस्य शिरसा शुभा ।
स्पृष्ट्वा पद्मदलाभाभ्यां पाणिभ्यामग्रतः स्थिता ॥२४॥
24. sā cābhivādya caraṇau rāmasya śirasā śubhā ,
spṛṣṭvā padmadalābhābhyāṁ pāṇibhyāmagrataḥ sthitā.
24. sā ca abhivādya caraṇau rāmasya śirasā śubhā
spṛṣṭvā padmadalābhābhyām pāṇibhyām agrataḥ sthitā
24. ca sā śubhā,
rāmasya caraṇau śirasā abhivādya,
padmadalābhābhyām pāṇibhyām (tau caraṇau) spṛṣṭvā,
agrataḥ sthitā
24. And the auspicious one (śubhā), having bowed down to Rāma's feet (caraṇau) with her head (śirasā), and having touched them with her two hands (pāṇibhyām) that resembled lotus petals, stood in front (agrataḥ).
रुरोद सा शोकवती बाष्पव्याकुललोचना ।
प्रपेदे शरणं चैव शरण्यं भृगुनन्दनम् ॥२५॥
25. ruroda sā śokavatī bāṣpavyākulalocanā ,
prapede śaraṇaṁ caiva śaraṇyaṁ bhṛgunandanam.
25. ruroda sā śokavatī bāṣpavyākulalocanā
prapede śaraṇaṃ ca eva śaraṇyaṃ bhṛgunandanam
25. sā śokavatī bāṣpavyākulalocanā ruroda ca
eva śaraṇyaṃ bhṛgunandanam śaraṇaṃ prapede
25. She wept, sorrowful and with eyes distressed by tears. And indeed, she resorted to the son of Bhṛgu (Paraśurāma), who was worthy of refuge.
राम उवाच ।
यथासि सृञ्जयस्यास्य तथा मम नृपात्मजे ।
ब्रूहि यत्ते मनोदुःखं करिष्ये वचनं तव ॥२६॥
26. rāma uvāca ,
yathāsi sṛñjayasyāsya tathā mama nṛpātmaje ,
brūhi yatte manoduḥkhaṁ kariṣye vacanaṁ tava.
26. rāma uvāca yathā asi sṛñjayasya asya tathā mama
nṛpātmaje brūhi yat te manoduḥkhaṃ kariṣye vacanaṃ tava
26. rāma uvāca nṛpātmaje yathā asya sṛñjayasya asi tathā
mama brūhi te yat manoduḥkhaṃ kariṣye vacanaṃ tava
26. Rāma said, "O daughter of a king, as you are of this Sañjaya, so you are of me. Tell me whatever mental distress you have; I will fulfill your word (command)."
अम्बोवाच ।
भगवञ्शरणं त्वाद्य प्रपन्नास्मि महाव्रत ।
शोकपङ्कार्णवाद्घोरादुद्धरस्व च मां विभो ॥२७॥
27. ambovāca ,
bhagavañśaraṇaṁ tvādya prapannāsmi mahāvrata ,
śokapaṅkārṇavādghorāduddharasva ca māṁ vibho.
27. ambā uvāca bhagavan śaraṇaṃ tvā adya prapannā asmi
mahāvrata śokapaṅkārṇavāt ghorāt uddharasva ca māṃ vibho
27. ambā uvāca bhagavan mahāvrata vibho adya tvā śaraṇaṃ
prapannā asmi ca māṃ ghorāt śokapaṅkārṇavāt uddharasva
27. Ambā said, "O blessed one, O great ascetic, O mighty one! Today I have sought refuge in you. And please deliver me from this terrible ocean of the mud of grief."
भीष्म उवाच ।
तस्याश्च दृष्ट्वा रूपं च वयश्चाभिनवं पुनः ।
सौकुमार्यं परं चैव रामश्चिन्तापरोऽभवत् ॥२८॥
28. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tasyāśca dṛṣṭvā rūpaṁ ca vayaścābhinavaṁ punaḥ ,
saukumāryaṁ paraṁ caiva rāmaścintāparo'bhavat.
28. bhīṣma uvāca tasyāḥ ca dṛṣṭvā rūpaṃ ca vayaḥ ca abhinavaṃ
punaḥ saukumāryaṃ paraṃ ca eva rāmaḥ cintāparaḥ abhavat
28. bhīṣma uvāca tasyāḥ rūpaṃ ca abhinavaṃ vayaḥ ca paraṃ
saukumāryaṃ ca eva punaḥ dṛṣṭvā rāmaḥ cintāparaḥ abhavat
28. Bhīṣma said, "And having seen her form, and her fresh youth, and indeed her supreme tenderness, Rāma became absorbed in thought (or worried)."
किमियं वक्ष्यतीत्येवं विमृशन्भृगुसत्तमः ।
इति दध्यौ चिरं रामः कृपयाभिपरिप्लुतः ॥२९॥
29. kimiyaṁ vakṣyatītyevaṁ vimṛśanbhṛgusattamaḥ ,
iti dadhyau ciraṁ rāmaḥ kṛpayābhipariplutaḥ.
29. kim iyam vakṣyati iti evam vimṛśan bhṛgusattamaḥ
iti dadhyau ciram rāmaḥ kṛpayā abhipariplutaḥ
29. kṛpayā abhipariplutaḥ bhṛgusattamaḥ rāmaḥ kim
iyam vakṣyati iti evam vimṛśan iti ciram dadhyau
29. Overwhelmed by compassion, Rāma, the best among the Bhṛgus, pondered for a long time, thinking, "What will she say?"
कथ्यतामिति सा भूयो रामेणोक्ता शुचिस्मिता ।
सर्वमेव यथातत्त्वं कथयामास भार्गवे ॥३०॥
30. kathyatāmiti sā bhūyo rāmeṇoktā śucismitā ,
sarvameva yathātattvaṁ kathayāmāsa bhārgave.
30. kathyatām iti sā bhūyaḥ rāmeṇa uktā śucismitā
sarvam eva yathātattvam kathayāmāsa bhārgave
30. śucismitā sā rāmeṇa bhūyaḥ kathyatām iti uktā,
yathātattvam sarvam eva bhārgave kathayāmāsa
30. The pure-smiling princess, being addressed again by Rāma with, "Tell me," then narrated everything truthfully to the son of Bhṛgu (Paraśurāma).
तच्छ्रुत्वा जामदग्न्यस्तु राजपुत्र्या वचस्तदा ।
उवाच तां वरारोहां निश्चित्यार्थविनिश्चयम् ॥३१॥
31. tacchrutvā jāmadagnyastu rājaputryā vacastadā ,
uvāca tāṁ varārohāṁ niścityārthaviniścayam.
31. tat śrutvā jāmadagnyaḥ tu rājaputryā vacaḥ tadā
uvāca tām varārohām niścitya arthaviniścayam
31. tadā,
jāmadagnyaḥ tu rājaputryā tat vacaḥ śrutvā,
arthaviniścayam niścitya,
tām varārohām uvāca
31. Having heard that speech from the princess, the son of Jamadagni (Paraśurāma) then ascertained the true nature of the matter and spoke to that fair-hipped woman.
प्रेषयिष्यामि भीष्माय कुरुश्रेष्ठाय भामिनि ।
करिष्यति वचो धर्म्यं श्रुत्वा मे स नराधिपः ॥३२॥
32. preṣayiṣyāmi bhīṣmāya kuruśreṣṭhāya bhāmini ,
kariṣyati vaco dharmyaṁ śrutvā me sa narādhipaḥ.
32. preṣayiṣyāmi bhīṣmāya kuruśreṣṭhāya bhāmini
kariṣyati vacaḥ dharmyam śrutvā me saḥ narādhipaḥ
32. bhāmini,
अहं भीष्माय कुरुśreṣṭhāya [त्वाम्] preṣayiṣyāmi.
सः नराधिपः मे धर्म्यम् वचः श्रुत्वा करिष्यति.
32. O beautiful one (bhāmini), I will send you to Bhīṣma, the foremost among the Kurus. That king, having heard my word, will do what is in accordance with (dharma).
न चेत्करिष्यति वचो मयोक्तं जाह्नवीसुतः ।
धक्ष्याम्येनं रणे भद्रे सामात्यं शस्त्रतेजसा ॥३३॥
33. na cetkariṣyati vaco mayoktaṁ jāhnavīsutaḥ ,
dhakṣyāmyenaṁ raṇe bhadre sāmātyaṁ śastratejasā.
33. na cet kariṣyati vacaḥ mayā uktam jāhnavīsutaḥ
dhakṣyāmi enam raṇe bhadre sāmātyam śastratejasā
33. bhadre cet jāhnavīsutaḥ mayā uktam vacaḥ na kariṣyati,
(tadā) enam sāmātyam raṇe śastratejasā dhakṣyāmi.
33. O gentle lady, if the son of Jahnavi (Bhishma) does not follow my command, I will burn him and his counselors in battle with the power of my weapons.
अथ वा ते मतिस्तत्र राजपुत्रि निवर्तते ।
तावच्छाल्वपतिं वीरं योजयाम्यत्र कर्मणि ॥३४॥
34. atha vā te matistatra rājaputri nivartate ,
tāvacchālvapatiṁ vīraṁ yojayāmyatra karmaṇi.
34. atha vā te matiḥ tatra rājaputri nivartate
tāvat śālvapatim vīram yojayāmi atra karmaṇi
34. atha vā rājaputri,
te matiḥ tatra nivartate cet,
tāvat (aham) vīram śālvapatim atra karmaṇi yojayāmi.
34. Or, O princess, if your mind (mati) turns away from him in that matter, then meanwhile, I will engage the brave lord of Salva in this task.
अम्बोवाच ।
विसर्जितास्मि भीष्मेण श्रुत्वैव भृगुनन्दन ।
शाल्वराजगतं चेतो मम पूर्वं मनीषितम् ॥३५॥
35. ambovāca ,
visarjitāsmi bhīṣmeṇa śrutvaiva bhṛgunandana ,
śālvarājagataṁ ceto mama pūrvaṁ manīṣitam.
35. ambā uvāca visarjitā asmi bhīṣmeṇa śrutvā eva
bhṛgunandana śālvarājagatam cetaḥ mama pūrvam manīṣitam
35. (iti) ambā uvāca: bhṛgunandana,
(yasmin) mama pūrvam śālvarājagatam manīṣitam cetaḥ (āsīt,
tat) śrutvā eva bhīṣmeṇa asmi visarjitā.
35. Amba said: 'O descendant of Bhrigu, Bhishma dismissed me after learning that my heart was previously set on the King of Salva, and that was my former desire.'
सौभराजमुपेत्याहमब्रुवं दुर्वचं वचः ।
न च मां प्रत्यगृह्णात्स चारित्रपरिशङ्कितः ॥३६॥
36. saubharājamupetyāhamabruvaṁ durvacaṁ vacaḥ ,
na ca māṁ pratyagṛhṇātsa cāritrapariśaṅkitaḥ.
36. saubharājam upetya aham abruvam durvacam vacaḥ
na ca mām pratyagṛhṇāt saḥ cāritrapariśaṅkitaḥ
36. aham saubharājam upetya durvacam vacaḥ abruvam.
ca saḥ cāritrapariśaṅkitaḥ (san) mām na pratyagṛhṇāt.
36. Having approached the king of Saubha, I spoke harsh words. But he did not accept me, being suspicious of my character.
एतत्सर्वं विनिश्चित्य स्वबुद्ध्या भृगुनन्दन ।
यदत्रौपयिकं कार्यं तच्चिन्तयितुमर्हसि ॥३७॥
37. etatsarvaṁ viniścitya svabuddhyā bhṛgunandana ,
yadatraupayikaṁ kāryaṁ taccintayitumarhasi.
37. etat sarvam viniścitya svabuddhyā bhṛgunandana
yat atra aupayikam kāryam tat cintayitum arhasi
37. bhṛgunandana svabuddhyā etat sarvam viniścitya
atra yat aupayikam kāryam tat cintayitum arhasi
37. O son of Bhṛgu, having thoroughly ascertained all this with your own intellect, you should consider what appropriate action needs to be taken here.
ममात्र व्यसनस्यास्य भीष्मो मूलं महाव्रतः ।
येनाहं वशमानीता समुत्क्षिप्य बलात्तदा ॥३८॥
38. mamātra vyasanasyāsya bhīṣmo mūlaṁ mahāvrataḥ ,
yenāhaṁ vaśamānītā samutkṣipya balāttadā.
38. mama atra vyasanasya asya bhīṣmaḥ mūlam mahāvrataḥ
yena aham vaśam ānītā samutkṣipya balāt tadā
38. atra asya mama vyasanasya mūlam mahāvrataḥ bhīṣmaḥ
yena aham tadā balāt samutkṣipya vaśam ānītā
38. Here, the root of this distress of mine is Bhīṣma, the one of great vow (mahāvrata). He is the one by whom I was then forcefully seized and brought under his control.
भीष्मं जहि महाबाहो यत्कृते दुःखमीदृशम् ।
प्राप्ताहं भृगुशार्दूल चराम्यप्रियमुत्तमम् ॥३९॥
39. bhīṣmaṁ jahi mahābāho yatkṛte duḥkhamīdṛśam ,
prāptāhaṁ bhṛguśārdūla carāmyapriyamuttamam.
39. bhīṣmam jahi mahābāho yatkṛte duḥkham īdṛśam
prāptā aham bhṛguśārdūla carāmi apriyam uttamam
39. mahābāho bhṛguśārdūla yatkṛte aham īdṛśam duḥkham
prāptā uttamam apriyam carāmi bhīṣmam jahi
39. O mighty-armed one, kill Bhīṣma, for whose sake I have obtained such profound sorrow. O tiger among the Bhṛgus, I am enduring this extreme unhappiness.
स हि लुब्धश्च मानी च जितकाशी च भार्गव ।
तस्मात्प्रतिक्रिया कर्तुं युक्ता तस्मै त्वयानघ ॥४०॥
40. sa hi lubdhaśca mānī ca jitakāśī ca bhārgava ,
tasmātpratikriyā kartuṁ yuktā tasmai tvayānagha.
40. sa hi lubdhaḥ ca mānī ca jitakāśī ca bhārgava
tasmāt pratikriyā kartum yuktā tasmai tvayā anagha
40. bhārgava saḥ hi lubdhaḥ ca mānī ca jitakāśī ca
tasmāt anagha tasmai pratikriyā kartum tvayā yuktā
40. Indeed, O descendant of Bhṛgu (Bhārgava), he is greedy, proud, and desirous of triumph. Therefore, O sinless one, it is proper for you to take action against him.
एष मे ह्रियमाणाया भारतेन तदा विभो ।
अभवद्धृदि संकल्पो घातयेयं महाव्रतम् ॥४१॥
41. eṣa me hriyamāṇāyā bhāratena tadā vibho ,
abhavaddhṛdi saṁkalpo ghātayeyaṁ mahāvratam.
41. eṣa me hriyamāṇāyāḥ bhāratena tadā vibho
abhavat hṛdi saṅkalpaḥ ghātayeyam mahāvratam
41. vibho,
tadā bhāratena hriyamāṇāyāḥ me hṛdi eṣa saṅkalpaḥ abhavat mahāvratam ghātayeyam
41. O mighty one, at that time, as I was being abducted by Bhārata (Bhishma), this resolve formed in my heart: 'I shall cause the one of great vow (Bhishma) to be slain.'
तस्मात्कामं ममाद्येमं राम संवर्तयानघ ।
जहि भीष्मं महाबाहो यथा वृत्रं पुरंदरः ॥४२॥
42. tasmātkāmaṁ mamādyemaṁ rāma saṁvartayānagha ,
jahi bhīṣmaṁ mahābāho yathā vṛtraṁ puraṁdaraḥ.
42. tasmāt kāmam mama adya imam rāma saṃvartaya anagha
jahi bhīṣmam mahābāho yathā vṛtram purandaraḥ
42. anagha rāma,
mahābāho,
tasmāt adya mama imam kāmam saṃvartaya.
purandaraḥ vṛtram yathā,
bhīṣmam jahi
42. Therefore, O sinless Rāma, O mighty-armed one, please fulfill this desire of mine today. Slay Bhishma, just as Purandara (Indra) slew Vritra.
