वैशंपायन उवाच ।
स श्वेतपर्वतं वीरः समतिक्रम्य भारत ।
देशं किंपुरुषावासं द्रुमपुत्रेण रक्षितम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sa śvetaparvataṁ vīraḥ samatikramya bhārata ,
deśaṁ kiṁpuruṣāvāsaṁ drumaputreṇa rakṣitam.

bhārata deśaṃ kiṃpuruṣa-āvāsaṃ drumaputreṇa rakṣitam
1. Vaiśampāyana said: O Bhārata, that hero, having crossed the White Mountain, then came to the region inhabited by the Kiṃpuruṣas, which was protected by Drumaputra.
महता संनिपातेन क्षत्रियान्तकरेण ह ।
व्यजयत्पाण्डवश्रेष्ठः करे चैव न्यवेशयत् ॥२॥
2. mahatā saṁnipātena kṣatriyāntakareṇa ha ,
vyajayatpāṇḍavaśreṣṭhaḥ kare caiva nyaveśayat.
2. mahatā saṃnipātena kṣatriya-antakareṇa ha
vyajayat pāṇḍava-śreṣṭhaḥ kare ca eva nyaveśayat
2. With a great, indeed destructive, battle against kṣatriyas, the best of the Pāṇḍavas conquered them and brought them under his control.
तं जित्वा हाटकं नाम देशं गुह्यकरक्षितम् ।
पाकशासनिरव्यग्रः सहसैन्यः समासदत् ॥३॥
3. taṁ jitvā hāṭakaṁ nāma deśaṁ guhyakarakṣitam ,
pākaśāsaniravyagraḥ sahasainyaḥ samāsadat.
3. tam jitvā hāṭakam nāma deśam guhyakarakṣitam
pākaśāsaniḥ avyagraḥ sahasainyaḥ samāsadat
3. Having conquered that region named Hāṭaka, which was protected by Guhyakas, Arjuna (Pākaśāsani) then fearlessly approached it with his army.
तांस्तु सान्त्वेन निर्जित्य मानसं सर उत्तमम् ।
ऋषिकुल्याश्च ताः सर्वा ददर्श कुरुनन्दनः ॥४॥
4. tāṁstu sāntvena nirjitya mānasaṁ sara uttamam ,
ṛṣikulyāśca tāḥ sarvā dadarśa kurunandanaḥ.
4. tān tu sāntvena nirjitya mānasam saraḥ uttamam
ṛṣikulyāḥ ca tāḥ sarvāḥ dadarśa kurunandanaḥ
4. But having subdued those (Guhyakas) with conciliatory words, Arjuna (Kuru-nandana) then saw the excellent Mānasa lake and all those hermitages of sages.
सरो मानसमासाद्य हाटकानभितः प्रभुः ।
गन्धर्वरक्षितं देशं व्यजयत्पाण्डवस्ततः ॥५॥
5. saro mānasamāsādya hāṭakānabhitaḥ prabhuḥ ,
gandharvarakṣitaṁ deśaṁ vyajayatpāṇḍavastataḥ.
5. saraḥ mānasam āsādya hāṭakān abhitaḥ prabhuḥ
gandharvarakṣitam deśam vyajayat pāṇḍavaḥ tataḥ
5. Having reached the Mānasa lake, the lord Arjuna (Pāṇḍava) then conquered the region around Hāṭaka, which was protected by Gandharvas.
तत्र तित्तिरिकल्माषान्मण्डूकाक्षान्हयोत्तमान् ।
लेभे स करमत्यन्तं गन्धर्वनगरात्तदा ॥६॥
6. tatra tittirikalmāṣānmaṇḍūkākṣānhayottamān ,
lebhe sa karamatyantaṁ gandharvanagarāttadā.
6. tatra tittirikalmāṣān maṇḍūkākṣān hayottamān
lebhe saḥ karam atyantam gandharvanagarāt tadā
6. There, from the Gandharva city, he (Arjuna) then received an immense tribute consisting of excellent horses, including those speckled like partridges and those with eyes like frogs.
उत्तरं हरिवर्षं तु समासाद्य स पाण्डवः ।
इयेष जेतुं तं देशं पाकशासननन्दनः ॥७॥
7. uttaraṁ harivarṣaṁ tu samāsādya sa pāṇḍavaḥ ,
iyeṣa jetuṁ taṁ deśaṁ pākaśāsananandanaḥ.
7. uttaram harivarṣam tu samāsādya sa pāṇḍavaḥ
iyeṣa jetum tam deśam pākaśāsananamdanaḥ
7. He, that son of the controller of Pāka (Indra), the descendant of Pāṇḍu, having reached the northern region of Harivarṣa, desired to conquer that country.
तत एनं महाकाया महावीर्या महाबलाः ।
द्वारपालाः समासाद्य हृष्टा वचनमब्रुवन् ॥८॥
8. tata enaṁ mahākāyā mahāvīryā mahābalāḥ ,
dvārapālāḥ samāsādya hṛṣṭā vacanamabruvan.
8. tata enam mahākāyāḥ mahāvīryāḥ mahābalāḥ
dvārapālāḥ samāsādya hṛṣṭāḥ vacanam abruvan
8. Then, the gatekeepers (dvārapālāḥ), who were immensely bodied, greatly valorous, and exceedingly powerful, approached him and joyfully spoke these words.
पार्थ नेदं त्वया शक्यं पुरं जेतुं कथंचन ।
उपावर्तस्व कल्याण पर्याप्तमिदमच्युत ॥९॥
9. pārtha nedaṁ tvayā śakyaṁ puraṁ jetuṁ kathaṁcana ,
upāvartasva kalyāṇa paryāptamidamacyuta.
9. pārtha na idam tvayā śakyam puram jetum kathañcana
upāvartasva kalyāṇa paryāptam idam acyuta
9. O Pārtha, this city cannot be conquered by you in any way. O blessed one, turn back; O infallible one, this is enough.
इदं पुरं यः प्रविशेद्ध्रुवं स न भवेन्नरः ।
प्रीयामहे त्वया वीर पर्याप्तो विजयस्तव ॥१०॥
10. idaṁ puraṁ yaḥ praviśeddhruvaṁ sa na bhavennaraḥ ,
prīyāmahe tvayā vīra paryāpto vijayastava.
10. idam puram yaḥ praviśet dhruvam sa na bhavet
naraḥ prīyāmahe tvayā vīra paryāptaḥ vijayaḥ tava
10. Any man who enters this city will certainly not remain a man. O hero, we are pleased with you; your victory is sufficient.
न चापि किंचिज्जेतव्यमर्जुनात्र प्रदृश्यते ।
उत्तराः कुरवो ह्येते नात्र युद्धं प्रवर्तते ॥११॥
11. na cāpi kiṁcijjetavyamarjunātra pradṛśyate ,
uttarāḥ kuravo hyete nātra yuddhaṁ pravartate.
11. na ca api kiñcit jetavyam arjunā atra pradṛśyate
uttarāḥ kuravaḥ hi ete na atra yuddham pravartate
11. Arjuna, nothing at all appears here that needs to be conquered. These are indeed the Northern Kurus, and no battle is waged here.
प्रविष्टश्चापि कौन्तेय नेह द्रक्ष्यसि किंचन ।
न हि मानुषदेहेन शक्यमत्राभिवीक्षितुम् ॥१२॥
12. praviṣṭaścāpi kaunteya neha drakṣyasi kiṁcana ,
na hi mānuṣadehena śakyamatrābhivīkṣitum.
12. praviṣṭaḥ ca api kaunteya na iha drakṣyasi kiñcana
na hi mānuṣadehena śakyam atra abhivīkṣitum
12. And even if you enter, O son of Kunti, you will not see anything here. Indeed, it is not possible to observe this place with a human body.
अथेह पुरुषव्याघ्र किंचिदन्यच्चिकीर्षसि ।
तद्ब्रवीहि करिष्यामो वचनात्तव भारत ॥१३॥
13. atheha puruṣavyāghra kiṁcidanyaccikīrṣasi ,
tadbravīhi kariṣyāmo vacanāttava bhārata.
13. atha iha puruṣavyāghra kiñcit anyat cikīrṣasi
tat bravīhi kariṣyāmaḥ vacanāt tava bhārata
13. Now, O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), if you wish to do anything else here, then tell us, O descendant of bharata (bhārata); we will perform it according to your word.
ततस्तानब्रवीद्राजन्नर्जुनः पाकशासनिः ।
पार्थिवत्वं चिकीर्षामि धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ॥१४॥
14. tatastānabravīdrājannarjunaḥ pākaśāsaniḥ ,
pārthivatvaṁ cikīrṣāmi dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ.
14. tataḥ tān abravīt rājan arjunaḥ pākaśāsaniḥ
pārthivatvam cikīrṣāmi dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ
14. Then, O king, Arjuna, the son of indra (pākaśāsani), spoke to them: 'I desire the sovereignty of the wise King of Righteousness (dharma), Yudhishthira.'
न प्रवेक्ष्यामि वो देशं बाध्यत्वं यदि मानुषैः ।
युधिष्ठिराय यत्किंचित्करवन्नः प्रदीयताम् ॥१५॥
15. na pravekṣyāmi vo deśaṁ bādhyatvaṁ yadi mānuṣaiḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhirāya yatkiṁcitkaravannaḥ pradīyatām.
15. na pravekṣyāmi vaḥ deśaṃ bādhyatvaṃ yadi mānuṣaiḥ
yudhiṣṭhirāya yatkiṃcit karavat naḥ pradīyatām
15. I will not enter your territory if your people cause trouble or offer resistance. Whatever tribute (kara) is due for Yudhiṣṭhira, let that be given to us.
ततो दिव्यानि वस्त्राणि दिव्यान्याभरणानि च ।
मोकाजिनानि दिव्यानि तस्मै ते प्रददुः करम् ॥१६॥
16. tato divyāni vastrāṇi divyānyābharaṇāni ca ,
mokājināni divyāni tasmai te pradaduḥ karam.
16. tataḥ divyāni vastrāṇi divyāni ābharaṇāni ca
mokājināni divyāni tasmai te pradaduḥ karam
16. Then they gave him splendid garments, magnificent ornaments, and excellent mokā (deer) skins as tribute (kara).
एवं स पुरुषव्याघ्रो विजिग्ये दिशमुत्तराम् ।
संग्रामान्सुबहून्कृत्वा क्षत्रियैर्दस्युभिस्तथा ॥१७॥
17. evaṁ sa puruṣavyāghro vijigye diśamuttarām ,
saṁgrāmānsubahūnkṛtvā kṣatriyairdasyubhistathā.
17. evam saḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ vijigye diśam uttarām
saṅgrāmān subahūn kṛtvā kṣatriyaiḥ dasyubhiḥ tathā
17. Thus, that lion among men (Arjuna) conquered the northern direction, having fought many battles with both kṣatriyas (warriors) and dacoits.
स विनिर्जित्य राज्ञस्तान्करे च विनिवेश्य ह ।
धनान्यादाय सर्वेभ्यो रत्नानि विविधानि च ॥१८॥
18. sa vinirjitya rājñastānkare ca viniveśya ha ,
dhanānyādāya sarvebhyo ratnāni vividhāni ca.
18. saḥ vinirjitya rājñaḥ tān kare ca viniveśya ha
dhanāni ādāya sarvebhyaḥ ratnāni vividhāni ca
18. Having completely conquered those kings and brought them under tribute (kara), he (Arjuna) indeed took wealth and various jewels from all of them.
हयांस्तित्तिरिकल्माषाञ्शुकपत्रनिभानपि ।
मयूरसदृशांश्चान्यान्सर्वाननिलरंहसः ॥१९॥
19. hayāṁstittirikalmāṣāñśukapatranibhānapi ,
mayūrasadṛśāṁścānyānsarvānanilaraṁhasaḥ.
19. hayān tittirikalmāṣān śukapatranibhān api
mayūrasadṛśān ca anyān sarvān anilaramhasaḥ
19. Horses, some spotted like partridges, others resembling parrot feathers, and still others similar to peacocks, all possessing the speed of the wind.
वृतः सुमहता राजन्बलेन चतुरङ्गिणा ।
आजगाम पुनर्वीरः शक्रप्रस्थं पुरोत्तमम् ॥२०॥
20. vṛtaḥ sumahatā rājanbalena caturaṅgiṇā ,
ājagāma punarvīraḥ śakraprasthaṁ purottamam.
20. vṛtaḥ sumahatā rājan balena caturangiṇā
ājagāma punar vīraḥ śakraprastham purottamam
20. O King, the hero, accompanied by a very large four-division army, returned to Śakraprastha, the finest of cities.
