Rudra (rudraḥ) said, "O son, I must indeed always be sought by you in all your duties. Through my sight and through your devotion (bhakti), you will attain the supreme welfare (śreyaḥ)."

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having embraced him, the great lord (Maheśvara) then dismissed him with these words. Immediately after Skanda's dismissal, O great king, a tremendous inauspicious event occurred, suddenly bewildering all the gods.

30.
O Lord, the sky, along with its constellations, blazed intensely, and the world became utterly bewildered. The earth trembled and roared, and the entire universe was enveloped in darkness.

31.
Then, upon seeing that terrible event, Śankara (Śiva) immediately became disturbed. So too did Umā, the highly blessed one, and all the gods, along with the great sages.

Then, as they (Śiva, Umā, the gods, and sages) stood bewildered, a vast and dreadful army appeared, resembling mountains and clouds, and armed with various weapons.

Indeed, that horrifying, countless (army), roaring with various sounds, attacked the gods and Lord Śaṅkara in battle.

And by those terrible great weapons falling upon them, the entire army of the gods quickly fled and appeared to be turning away.

That (army), being slaughtered by the demons (asuras), fell like a forest being consumed by fires, just as a great forest of trees, largely burned, would collapse.

Those gods (divaukasaḥ), whose heads and bodies were severed, were falling. Being slaughtered in the great battle, they did not find a protector (nātha).

Then, having seen that army scattered and severely afflicted by the demons (dānavas), the god Purandara (Indra), while comforting them, said this.

Having heard the words of Śakra (Indra), the celestial beings were reassured. They fought against the demons, making Śakra their refuge.

Then all those gods, the mighty Maruts, the Sādhyas, and the Vasus, rushed forth with great speed.

In the battle, the weapons discharged by those enraged (gods), and the arrows embedded in the Daityas' bodies, drank copious blood.

Then, in battle, that demon army was terrified by all the hosts of gods with their various arrows and indeed put to flight.

Then, a great cry was raised by all the delighted gods, who had uplifted their weapons. And at that time, all the trumpets were sounded repeatedly.

In this way, the battle, fought by both sides, was extremely dreadful, creating a mire of flesh and blood for the gods and the Dānavas (demons).

Then, from the dreadful demon force, the greatly powerful Dānava (demon) named Mahiṣa emerged, grasping a vast mountain.

Then, O King, Mahiṣa rushed at the gods and hurled that mountain. When that terrifying mountain fell, ten thousand from the army of the gods were struck down and fell to the earth.

Then Mahiṣa, accompanied by those demons, swiftly advanced into battle, terrifying the gods, just as a lion attacks small animals.

Then that enraged buffalo (demon) quickly went to Rudra's chariot. Having rushed upon it, he seized Rudra's chariot-pole.

When the enraged buffalo (demon) suddenly went to Rudra's chariot, heaven and earth trembled greatly, and the great sages were bewildered.

And the large-bodied demons, resembling rain clouds, roared. It was certain for them, 'We have indeed conquered!'

But while such a situation prevailed, the Lord (Rudra) did not kill the buffalo (demon) in battle. And then he remembered Skanda, the destined destroyer of that wicked one.

The buffalo (Mahiṣa) also, upon seeing Rudra's fearsome chariot, roared aloud, simultaneously striking terror into the gods and causing great joy to the demons.

Then, as that dreadful fear arose among the gods, Mahasena arrived, blazing with rage (krodha) like the sun.

And that immensely powerful Mahasena (Skanda), O king of kings, also released his blazing "śakti" (divine spear), which was capable of tearing apart the buffalo demon.

That released "śakti" (divine spear) struck the great head of the buffalo demon. When its head was split, the buffalo demon fell down, having abandoned its life.

That "śakti" (divine spear), having been thrown repeatedly, killed thousands of enemies. It then returned to Skanda's hand and was seen by both gods and demons.

Most of them were struck down by the arrows of the wise Mahasena (Skanda). The remaining terrible hosts of demons, frightened and terrified, were then killed and devoured in massive numbers by Skanda's formidable attendants.

O Skanda, you are endowed with a boon granted by Brahma. By you, this buffalo demon was slain. Before him, even the gods had become as insignificant as straw, O best among victors, so great was his power. Now, O mighty-armed one, you have vanquished this thorn in the side of the gods.
