वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततस्ते नियतात्मान उदीचीं दिशमास्थिताः ।
ददृशुर्योगयुक्ताश्च हिमवन्तं महागिरिम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataste niyatātmāna udīcīṁ diśamāsthitāḥ ,
dadṛśuryogayuktāśca himavantaṁ mahāgirim.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then they, with their selves (ātman) controlled and engaged in "yoga" (yoga), having proceeded towards the northern direction, beheld the great mountain Himavat.
तं चाप्यतिक्रमन्तस्ते ददृशुर्वालुकार्णवम् ।
अवैक्षन्त महाशैलं मेरुं शिखरिणां वरम् ॥२॥
2. taṁ cāpyatikramantaste dadṛśurvālukārṇavam ,
avaikṣanta mahāśailaṁ meruṁ śikhariṇāṁ varam.
2. tam ca api atikramantaḥ te dadṛśuḥ vālukā arṇavam
avaikṣanta mahāśailam merum śikhariṇām varam
2. te tam ca api atikramantaḥ vālukā arṇavam dadṛśuḥ
mahāśailam śikhariṇām varam merum avaikṣanta
2. And surpassing that (Himavat), they also beheld a sandy expanse (vālukārṇava). They then observed the great mountain Meru, the foremost among peaks.
तेषां तु गच्छतां शीघ्रं सर्वेषां योगधर्मिणाम् ।
याज्ञसेनी भ्रष्टयोगा निपपात महीतले ॥३॥
3. teṣāṁ tu gacchatāṁ śīghraṁ sarveṣāṁ yogadharmiṇām ,
yājñasenī bhraṣṭayogā nipapāta mahītale.
3. teṣām tu gacchatām śīghram sarveṣām yogadharmiṇām
yājñasenī bhraṣṭayogā nipapāta mahītale

3. As all of them, observing their spiritual discipline (yoga-dharma), were swiftly proceeding, Yājñaseṇī (Draupadi) fell to the ground, having lost her spiritual discipline.
तां तु प्रपतितां दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनो महाबलः ।
उवाच धर्मराजानं याज्ञसेनीमवेक्ष्य ह ॥४॥
4. tāṁ tu prapatitāṁ dṛṣṭvā bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ ,
uvāca dharmarājānaṁ yājñasenīmavekṣya ha.
4. tām tu prapatitām dṛṣṭvā bhīmasenaḥ mahābalaḥ
uvāca dharmarājānam yājñasenīm avekṣya ha
4. tu mahābalaḥ bhīmasenaḥ tām prapatitām dṛṣṭvā

4. But the mighty Bhīmasena, having seen her fallen, spoke to King Yudhiṣṭhira after looking at Yājñaseṇī (Draupadi).
नाधर्मश्चरितः कश्चिद्राजपुत्र्या परंतप ।
कारणं किं नु तद्राजन्यत्कृष्णा पतिता भुवि ॥५॥
5. nādharmaścaritaḥ kaścidrājaputryā paraṁtapa ,
kāraṇaṁ kiṁ nu tadrājanyatkṛṣṇā patitā bhuvi.
5. na adharmaḥ caritaḥ kaścit rājaputryā paraṃtapa
kāraṇam kim nu tat rājan yat kṛṣṇā patitā bhuvi
5. paraṃtapa rājaputryā kaścit adharmaḥ na caritaḥ
nu rājan tat kāraṇam kim yat kṛṣṇā bhuvi patitā
5. O tormentor of foes, the princess committed no unrighteous act. What, then, O King, is the reason that Kṛṣṇā (Draupadi) has fallen to the ground?
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
पक्षपातो महानस्या विशेषेण धनंजये ।
तस्यैतत्फलमद्यैषा भुङ्क्ते पुरुषसत्तम ॥६॥
6. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
pakṣapāto mahānasyā viśeṣeṇa dhanaṁjaye ,
tasyaitatphalamadyaiṣā bhuṅkte puruṣasattama.
6. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca pakṣapātaḥ mahān asyā viśeṣeṇa
dhanaṃjaye tasya etat phalam adya eṣā bhuṅkte puruṣasattama
6. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca puruṣasattama asyā dhanaṃjaye viśeṣeṇa
mahān pakṣapātaḥ etat tasya phalam eṣā adya bhuṅkte
6. Yudhiṣṭhira replied: "She harbored a great partiality, especially for Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna). This is the consequence of that, which she is experiencing today, O best among men."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वानवेक्ष्यैनां ययौ धर्मसुतो नृपः ।
समाधाय मनो धीमान्धर्मात्मा पुरुषर्षभः ॥७॥
7. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktvānavekṣyaināṁ yayau dharmasuto nṛpaḥ ,
samādhāya mano dhīmāndharmātmā puruṣarṣabhaḥ.
7. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca evam uktvā anavekṣya enām yayau dharma-sutaḥ
nṛpaḥ samādhāya manaḥ dhīmān dharmātmā puruṣarṣabhaḥ
7. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca evam uktvā enām anavekṣya manaḥ samādhāya
dhīmān dharmātmā puruṣarṣabhaḥ dharma-sutaḥ nṛpaḥ yayau
7. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having spoken thus, the wise king Yudhiṣṭhira, the righteous son of dharma (dharma) and best among men, composed his mind and departed without looking at her.
सहदेवस्ततो धीमान्निपपात महीतले ।
तं चापि पतितं दृष्ट्वा भीमो राजानमब्रवीत् ॥८॥
8. sahadevastato dhīmānnipapāta mahītale ,
taṁ cāpi patitaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhīmo rājānamabravīt.
8. sahadevaḥ tataḥ dhīmān nipapāta mahītale tam
ca api patitam dṛṣṭvā bhīmaḥ rājānam abravīt
8. tataḥ dhīmān sahadevaḥ mahītale nipapāta ca
api tam patitam dṛṣṭvā bhīmaḥ rājānam abravīt
8. Then the wise Sahadeva fell upon the ground. And seeing him fallen, Bhīma spoke to the king.
योऽयमस्मासु सर्वेषु शुश्रूषुरनहंकृतः ।
सोऽयं माद्रवतीपुत्रः कस्मान्निपतितो भुवि ॥९॥
9. yo'yamasmāsu sarveṣu śuśrūṣuranahaṁkṛtaḥ ,
so'yaṁ mādravatīputraḥ kasmānnipatito bhuvi.
9. yaḥ ayam asmāsu sarveṣu śuśrūṣuḥ anahaṃkṛtaḥ
saḥ ayam mādrāvatī-putraḥ kasmāt nipatitaḥ bhuvi
9. yaḥ ayam asmāsu sarveṣu śuśrūṣuḥ anahaṃkṛtaḥ
saḥ ayam mādrāvatī-putraḥ kasmāt bhuvi nipatitaḥ
9. This one, who was always eager to serve among all of us and was free from ego (ahaṅkāra) – why has this son of Mādrī fallen on the ground?
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
आत्मनः सदृशं प्राज्ञं नैषोऽमन्यत कंचन ।
तेन दोषेण पतितस्तस्मादेष नृपात्मजः ॥१०॥
10. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
ātmanaḥ sadṛśaṁ prājñaṁ naiṣo'manyata kaṁcana ,
tena doṣeṇa patitastasmādeṣa nṛpātmajaḥ.
10. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca ātmanaḥ sadṛśam prājñam na eṣaḥ amanyata
kaṃcana tena doṣeṇa patitaḥ tasmāt eṣaḥ nṛpātmajaḥ
10. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca eṣaḥ ātmanaḥ prājñam sadṛśam kaṃcana
na amanyata tena doṣeṇa patitaḥ tasmāt eṣaḥ nṛpātmajaḥ
10. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "He did not consider anyone equal to his own self (ātman) in wisdom. He has fallen due to that fault. Therefore, this son of the king has fallen."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा तु समुत्सृज्य सहदेवं ययौ तदा ।
भ्रातृभिः सह कौन्तेयः शुना चैव युधिष्ठिरः ॥११॥
11. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktvā tu samutsṛjya sahadevaṁ yayau tadā ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kaunteyaḥ śunā caiva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
11. vaiśampāyana uvāca iti uktvā tu samutsṛjya sahadevam yayau
tadā bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kaunteyaḥ śunā ca eva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
11. Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus, Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, then proceeded along with his brothers and the dog, abandoning Sahadeva.
कृष्णां निपतितां दृष्ट्वा सहदेवं च पाण्डवम् ।
आर्तो बन्धुप्रियः शूरो नकुलो निपपात ह ॥१२॥
12. kṛṣṇāṁ nipatitāṁ dṛṣṭvā sahadevaṁ ca pāṇḍavam ,
ārto bandhupriyaḥ śūro nakulo nipapāta ha.
12. kṛṣṇām nipatitām dṛṣṭvā sahadevam ca pāṇḍavam
artaḥ bandhupriyaḥ śūraḥ nakulaḥ nipapāta ha
12. Seeing Kṛṣṇā fallen and also Sahadeva, the Pandava, the distressed, kinsman-loving, heroic Nakula indeed fell down.
तस्मिन्निपतिते वीरे नकुले चारुदर्शने ।
पुनरेव तदा भीमो राजानमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१३॥
13. tasminnipatite vīre nakule cārudarśane ,
punareva tadā bhīmo rājānamidamabravīt.
13. tasmin nipatite vīre nakule cārudarśane
punaḥ eva tadā bhīmaḥ rājānam idam abravīt
13. When that heroic Nakula, beautiful to behold, had fallen, then Bhima again spoke these words to the king.
योऽयमक्षतधर्मात्मा भ्राता वचनकारकः ।
रूपेणाप्रतिमो लोके नकुलः पतितो भुवि ॥१४॥
14. yo'yamakṣatadharmātmā bhrātā vacanakārakaḥ ,
rūpeṇāpratimo loke nakulaḥ patito bhuvi.
14. yaḥ ayam akṣatadharmātmā bhrātā vacanakārakaḥ
rūpeṇa apratimaḥ loke nakulaḥ patitaḥ bhuvi
14. This brother, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is unblemished, who is obedient to commands, and unrivaled in beauty in the world - Nakula has fallen on the earth.
इत्युक्तो भीमसेनेन प्रत्युवाच युधिष्ठिरः ।
नकुलं प्रति धर्मात्मा सर्वबुद्धिमतां वरः ॥१५॥
15. ityukto bhīmasenena pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
nakulaṁ prati dharmātmā sarvabuddhimatāṁ varaḥ.
15. iti uktaḥ bhīmasenena pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
nakulam prati dharmātmā sarvabuddhimatām varaḥ
15. bhīmasenena iti uktaḥ dharmātmā sarvabuddhimatām
varaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ nakulam prati pratyuvāca
15. Thus addressed by Bhimasena, Yudhishthira, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness, and who was the foremost among all intelligent beings, replied regarding Nakula.
रूपेण मत्समो नास्ति कश्चिदित्यस्य दर्शनम् ।
अधिकश्चाहमेवैक इत्यस्य मनसि स्थितम् ॥१६॥
16. rūpeṇa matsamo nāsti kaścidityasya darśanam ,
adhikaścāhamevaika ityasya manasi sthitam.
16. rūpeṇa matsamaḥ na asti kaścit iti asya darśanam
adhikaḥ ca aham eva ekaḥ iti asya manasi sthitam
16. rūpeṇa matsamaḥ kaścit na asti iti asya darśanam
ca aham eva ekaḥ adhikaḥ iti asya manasi sthitam
16. His view is that there is no one equal to him in appearance. And this thought, 'I alone am superior,' is firmly established in his mind.
नकुलः पतितस्तस्मादागच्छ त्वं वृकोदर ।
यस्य यद्विहितं वीर सोऽवश्यं तदुपाश्नुते ॥१७॥
17. nakulaḥ patitastasmādāgaccha tvaṁ vṛkodara ,
yasya yadvihitaṁ vīra so'vaśyaṁ tadupāśnute.
17. nakulaḥ patitaḥ tasmāt āgaccha tvam vṛkodara
yasya yat vihitam vīra saḥ avaśyam tat upāśnute
17. vṛkodara tvam āgaccha nakulaḥ patitaḥ tasmāt
vīra yasya yat vihitam saḥ tat avaśyam upāśnute
17. Nakula has fallen; therefore, O Vrikodara, you must come! O hero, whatever is ordained for a person, he will surely obtain it.
तांस्तु प्रपतितान्दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवः श्वेतवाहनः ।
पपात शोकसंतप्तस्ततोऽनु परवीरहा ॥१८॥
18. tāṁstu prapatitāndṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ ,
papāta śokasaṁtaptastato'nu paravīrahā.
18. tān tu prapatitān dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ
papāta śokasaṃtaptaḥ tataḥ anu paravīrahā
18. tu tān prapatitān dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ
paravīrahā śokasaṃtaptaḥ tataḥ anu papāta
18. But seeing them all fallen, the Pandava, Arjuna (śvetavāhana), who was the slayer of enemy heroes (paravīrahā), overcome with grief, then also fell.
तस्मिंस्तु पुरुषव्याघ्रे पतिते शक्रतेजसि ।
म्रियमाणे दुराधर्षे भीमो राजानमब्रवीत् ॥१९॥
19. tasmiṁstu puruṣavyāghre patite śakratejasi ,
mriyamāṇe durādharṣe bhīmo rājānamabravīt.
19. tasmin tu puruṣavyāghre patite śakratejasi
mriyamāṇe durādharṣe bhīmaḥ rājānam abravīt
19. tu tasmin puruṣavyāghre śakratejasi durādharṣe mriyamāṇe patite,
bhīmaḥ rājānam abravīt
19. When that excellent man (puruṣa), endowed with the might of Indra, unassailable, fell and was dying, Bhima spoke to the king.
अनृतं न स्मराम्यस्य स्वैरेष्वपि महात्मनः ।
अथ कस्य विकारोऽयं येनायं पतितो भुवि ॥२०॥
20. anṛtaṁ na smarāmyasya svaireṣvapi mahātmanaḥ ,
atha kasya vikāro'yaṁ yenāyaṁ patito bhuvi.
20. anṛtam na smarāmi asya svaiḥ eṣu api mahāātmanaḥ
atha kasya vikāraḥ ayam yena ayam patitaḥ bhuvi
20. na smarāmi anṛtam asya mahāātmanaḥ svaiḥ eṣu api.
atha ayam kasya vikāraḥ,
yena ayam bhuvi patitaḥ?
20. I do not recall this great-souled one (ātman) ever speaking a lie, even in these his own private matters. So, whose fault is this, by which he has fallen to the ground?
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
एकाह्ना निर्दहेयं वै शत्रूनित्यर्जुनोऽब्रवीत् ।
न च तत्कृतवानेष शूरमानी ततोऽपतत् ॥२१॥
21. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
ekāhnā nirdaheyaṁ vai śatrūnityarjuno'bravīt ,
na ca tatkṛtavāneṣa śūramānī tato'patat.
21. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca | ekāhnā nirdaheyam vai śatrūn iti
arjunaḥ abravīt | na ca tat kṛtavān eṣa śūramānī tataḥ apatat
21. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca.
arjunaḥ abravīt iti: "vai ekāhnā śatrūn nirdaheyam.
" ca eṣa śūramānī tat na kṛtavān,
tataḥ apatat.
21. Yudhishthira said, "Arjuna indeed declared, 'I would incinerate all enemies in a single day.' But this proud one, considering himself a hero, did not accomplish that, and therefore he fell."
अवमेने धनुर्ग्राहानेष सर्वांश्च फल्गुनः ।
यथा चोक्तं तथा चैव कर्तव्यं भूतिमिच्छता ॥२२॥
22. avamene dhanurgrāhāneṣa sarvāṁśca phalgunaḥ ,
yathā coktaṁ tathā caiva kartavyaṁ bhūtimicchatā.
22. avamene dhanurgāhān eṣa sarvān ca phalgunaḥ yathā
ca uktam tathā ca eva kartavyam bhūtim icchatā
22. eṣa phalgunaḥ avamene sarvān ca dhanurgāhān.
yathā ca uktam,
tathā ca eva bhūtim icchatā kartavyam.
22. This Phalguna (Arjuna) scorned all other bow-wielders. As was declared, so indeed should it be done by one desiring prosperity.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा प्रस्थितो राजा भीमोऽथ निपपात ह ।
पतितश्चाब्रवीद्भीमो धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥२३॥
23. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktvā prasthito rājā bhīmo'tha nipapāta ha ,
patitaścābravīdbhīmo dharmarājaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.
23. vaiśampāyana uvāca iti uktvā prasthitaḥ rājā bhīmaḥ atha
nipapāta ha patitaḥ ca abravīt bhīmaḥ dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram
23. vaiśampāyana uvāca iti uktvā prasthitaḥ rājā bhīmaḥ atha
nipapāta ha patitaḥ ca bhīmaḥ dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram abravīt
23. Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus, the departing King Bhīma then indeed fell down. And having fallen, Bhīma spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira, the king upholding natural law (dharma).
भो भो राजन्नवेक्षस्व पतितोऽहं प्रियस्तव ।
किंनिमित्तं च पतनं ब्रूहि मे यदि वेत्थ ह ॥२४॥
24. bho bho rājannavekṣasva patito'haṁ priyastava ,
kiṁnimittaṁ ca patanaṁ brūhi me yadi vettha ha.
24. bho bho rājan avekṣasva patitaḥ aham priyaḥ tava
kimnimittam ca patanam brūhi me yadi vettha ha
24. bho bho rājan avekṣasva aham tava priyaḥ patitaḥ
ca kimnimittam patanam me brūhi yadi ha vettha
24. O King, O King! Look at me, your dear one, I have fallen. Tell me the reason for this fall, if you indeed know it.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
अतिभुक्तं च भवता प्राणेन च विकत्थसे ।
अनवेक्ष्य परं पार्थ तेनासि पतितः क्षितौ ॥२५॥
25. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
atibhuktaṁ ca bhavatā prāṇena ca vikatthase ,
anavekṣya paraṁ pārtha tenāsi patitaḥ kṣitau.
25. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca atibhuktam ca bhavatā prāṇena ca
vikatthase anavekṣya param pārtha tena asi patitaḥ kṣitau
25. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca bhavatā atibhuktam ca prāṇena ca
vikatthase he pārtha param anavekṣya tena kṣitau patitaḥ asi
25. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "You ate excessively, and you boasted of your strength. O Pārtha, because you disregarded others, you have fallen on the earth."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा तं महाबाहुर्जगामानवलोकयन् ।
श्वा त्वेकोऽनुययौ यस्ते बहुशः कीर्तितो मया ॥२६॥
26. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktvā taṁ mahābāhurjagāmānavalokayan ,
śvā tveko'nuyayau yaste bahuśaḥ kīrtito mayā.
26. vaiśampāyana uvāca iti uktvā tam mahābāhuḥ jagāma anavalokayan
śvā tu ekaḥ anuyayau yaḥ te bahuśaḥ kīrtitaḥ mayā
26. vaiśampāyana uvāca iti uktvā mahābāhuḥ tam anavalokayan
jagāma tu ekaḥ śvā anuyayau yaḥ mayā te bahuśaḥ kīrtitaḥ
26. Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus, the mighty-armed Yudhiṣṭhira went on without looking back at him. But one dog followed, which I have repeatedly mentioned to you.
