वैशंपायन उवाच ।
गतेषु लोकपालेषु पार्थः शत्रुनिबर्हणः ।
चिन्तयामास राजेन्द्र देवराजरथागमम् ॥१॥

1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,

Vaiśampāyana said: O King, after the protectors of the realms (loka) had departed, Pārtha, the slayer of foes, began to contemplate the arrival of the king of gods' (devarāja) chariot.
ततश्चिन्तयमानस्य गुडाकेशस्य धीमतः ।
रथो मातलिसंयुक्त आजगाम महाप्रभः ॥२॥

Then, as the wise Guḍākeśa (Arjuna) was contemplating, a magnificent chariot, accompanied by Mātali, arrived.
नभो वितिमिरं कुर्वञ्जलदान्पाटयन्निव ।
दिशः संपूरयन्नादैर्महामेघरवोपमैः ॥३॥

3. nabho vitimiraṁ kurvañjaladānpāṭayanniva ,
diśaḥ saṁpūrayannādairmahāmegharavopamaiḥ.

It made the sky free from darkness, as if tearing the clouds apart, and filled all directions with roars resembling those of mighty thunderclouds.
असयः शक्तयो भीमा गदाश्चोग्रप्रदर्शनाः ।
दिव्यप्रभावाः प्रासाश्च विद्युतश्च महाप्रभाः ॥४॥
दिव्यप्रभावाः प्रासाश्च विद्युतश्च महाप्रभाः ॥४॥
4. asayaḥ śaktayo bhīmā gadāścograpradarśanāḥ ,
divyaprabhāvāḥ prāsāśca vidyutaśca mahāprabhāḥ.

There were formidable swords, dreadful spears (śakti), terrifying maces, javelins endowed with divine power, and greatly luminous lightning flashes.
तथैवाशनयस्तत्र चक्रयुक्ता हुडागुडाः ।
वायुस्फोटाः सनिर्घाता बर्हिमेघनिभस्वनाः ॥५॥

5. tathaivāśanayastatra cakrayuktā huḍāguḍāḥ ,
vāyusphoṭāḥ sanirghātā barhimeghanibhasvanāḥ.

Similarly, there were thunderbolts (aśani) equipped with rotating discs, making crashing sounds, accompanied by air blasts with booming roars, and sounds resembling those of peacocks or thundering clouds.
तत्र नागा महाकाया ज्वलितास्याः सुदारुणाः ।
सिताभ्रकूटप्रतिमाः संहताश्च यथोपलाः ॥६॥

6. tatra nāgā mahākāyā jvalitāsyāḥ sudāruṇāḥ ,

There were also colossal serpents (nāga) with flaming mouths, exceedingly fierce, resembling heaps of white clouds, and as solid as rocks.
दश वाजिसहस्राणि हरीणां वातरंहसाम् ।
वहन्ति यं नेत्रमुषं दिव्यं मायामयं रथम् ॥७॥

7. daśa vājisahasrāṇi harīṇāṁ vātaraṁhasām ,
vahanti yaṁ netramuṣaṁ divyaṁ māyāmayaṁ ratham.

Ten thousand swift-as-wind tawny (hari) horses draw this chariot, which is dazzling to the eyes, divine, and composed of illusion (māyā).
तत्रापश्यन्महानीलं वैजयन्तं महाप्रभम् ।
ध्वजमिन्दीवरश्यामं वंशं कनकभूषणम् ॥८॥

8. tatrāpaśyanmahānīlaṁ vaijayantaṁ mahāprabham ,
dhvajamindīvaraśyāmaṁ vaṁśaṁ kanakabhūṣaṇam.

tatra apaśyan mahānīlam vaijayantam mahāprabham

There he saw the great blue banner named Vaijayanta, which had a magnificent radiance and was dark like a blue lotus, its pole adorned with gold.
तस्मिन्रथे स्थितं सूतं तप्तहेमविभूषितम् ।
दृष्ट्वा पार्थो महाबाहुर्देवमेवान्वतर्कयत् ॥९॥

9. tasminrathe sthitaṁ sūtaṁ taptahemavibhūṣitam ,
dṛṣṭvā pārtho mahābāhurdevamevānvatarkayat.

Having seen the charioteer, adorned with molten gold and seated in that chariot, Arjuna (Pārtha), the mighty-armed, indeed surmised him to be a deity.
तथा तर्कयतस्तस्य फल्गुनस्याथ मातलिः ।
संनतः प्रश्रितो भूत्वा वाक्यमर्जुनमब्रवीत् ॥१०॥

10. tathā tarkayatastasya phalgunasyātha mātaliḥ ,
saṁnataḥ praśrito bhūtvā vākyamarjunamabravīt.

As Arjuna (Phalguna) was thus pondering, Mātali then, having become reverent and humble, spoke these words to Arjuna.
भो भो शक्रात्मज श्रीमाञ्शक्रस्त्वां द्रष्टुमिच्छति ।
आरोहतु भवाञ्शीघ्रं रथमिन्द्रस्य संमतम् ॥११॥

11. bho bho śakrātmaja śrīmāñśakrastvāṁ draṣṭumicchati ,
ārohatu bhavāñśīghraṁ rathamindrasya saṁmatam.

bho bho śakrātmaja śrīmān śakraḥ tvām draṣṭum icchati

O glorious son of Śakra (Indra)! Indra wishes to see you. May Your Honor quickly ascend Indra's esteemed chariot.
आह माममरश्रेष्ठः पिता तव शतक्रतुः ।
कुन्तीसुतमिह प्राप्तं पश्यन्तु त्रिदशालयाः ॥१२॥

12. āha māmamaraśreṣṭhaḥ pitā tava śatakratuḥ ,
kuntīsutamiha prāptaṁ paśyantu tridaśālayāḥ.

āha mām amaraśreṣṭhaḥ pitā tava śatakratuḥ

Your father, Indra (śatakratuḥ), the foremost among the immortals, said to me: "Let the dwellers of the celestial realms (tridaśālayāḥ) see Kunti's son, who has arrived here."
एष शक्रः परिवृतो देवैरृषिगणैस्तथा ।
गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च त्वां दिदृक्षुः प्रतीक्षते ॥१३॥
गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च त्वां दिदृक्षुः प्रतीक्षते ॥१३॥
13. eṣa śakraḥ parivṛto devairṛṣigaṇaistathā ,
gandharvairapsarobhiśca tvāṁ didṛkṣuḥ pratīkṣate.

13.
This Indra (śakraḥ), accompanied by gods, multitudes of sages, Gandharvas, and Apsaras, is waiting, eager to see you.
अस्माल्लोकाद्देवलोकं पाकशासनशासनात् ।
आरोह त्वं मया सार्धं लब्धास्त्रः पुनरेष्यसि ॥१४॥

14. asmāllokāddevalokaṁ pākaśāsanaśāsanāt ,
āroha tvaṁ mayā sārdhaṁ labdhāstraḥ punareṣyasi.

asmāt lokāt devalokam pākaśāsanaśāsanāt āroha

By the command of Indra (pākaśāsana), you must ascend with me from this realm to the world of the gods. You will return again after obtaining your weapons.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
मातले गच्छ शीघ्रं त्वमारोहस्व रथोत्तमम् ।
राजसूयाश्वमेधानां शतैरपि सुदुर्लभम् ॥१५॥
मातले गच्छ शीघ्रं त्वमारोहस्व रथोत्तमम् ।
राजसूयाश्वमेधानां शतैरपि सुदुर्लभम् ॥१५॥
15. arjuna uvāca ,
mātale gaccha śīghraṁ tvamārohasva rathottamam ,
rājasūyāśvamedhānāṁ śatairapi sudurlabham.

rājasūyāśvamedhānāṁ śatairapi sudurlabham.
15.
arjuna uvāca mātale gaccha śīghram tvam ārohasva
rathottamam rājasūyāśvamedhānām śataiḥ api sudurlabham
rathottamam rājasūyāśvamedhānām śataiḥ api sudurlabham

Arjuna said: "O Matali, go quickly! You must ascend this excellent chariot, which is exceedingly rare to obtain, even with hundreds of royal consecration (rājasūya) and horse (aśvamedha) sacrifices."
पार्थिवैः सुमहाभागैर्यज्वभिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः ।
दैवतैर्वा समारोढुं दानवैर्वा रथोत्तमम् ॥१६॥

16. pārthivaiḥ sumahābhāgairyajvabhirbhūridakṣiṇaiḥ ,
daivatairvā samāroḍhuṁ dānavairvā rathottamam.

To ascend that most excellent chariot, whether by greatly fortunate kings (pārthiva), by those who perform Vedic rituals (yajña) and offer generous donations (dāna), or indeed by gods, or by demons.
नातप्ततपसा शक्य एष दिव्यो महारथः ।
द्रष्टुं वाप्यथ वा स्प्रष्टुमारोढुं कुत एव तु ॥१७॥
द्रष्टुं वाप्यथ वा स्प्रष्टुमारोढुं कुत एव तु ॥१७॥
17. nātaptatapasā śakya eṣa divyo mahārathaḥ ,
draṣṭuṁ vāpyatha vā spraṣṭumāroḍhuṁ kuta eva tu.
draṣṭuṁ vāpyatha vā spraṣṭumāroḍhuṁ kuta eva tu.

na ataptatapasā śakyaḥ eṣaḥ divyaḥ mahārathaḥ
draṣṭum vā api atha vā spraṣṭum āroḍhum kutaḥ eva tu
draṣṭum vā api atha vā spraṣṭum āroḍhum kutaḥ eva tu
17.
This divine great chariot is not possible for one who has not performed austerities (tapas) even to see or to touch, let alone to mount.
त्वयि प्रतिष्ठिते साधो रथस्थे स्थिरवाजिनि ।
पश्चादहमथारोक्ष्ये सुकृती सत्पथं यथा ॥१८॥
पश्चादहमथारोक्ष्ये सुकृती सत्पथं यथा ॥१८॥
18. tvayi pratiṣṭhite sādho rathasthe sthiravājini ,
paścādahamathārokṣye sukṛtī satpathaṁ yathā.

O righteous one (sādho), when you are established in the chariot, with its steady horses, then I will ascend afterwards, just as a virtuous person (sukṛtī) ascends the true path (satpatham).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा मातलिः शक्रसारथिः ।
आरुरोह रथं शीघ्रं हयान्येमे च रश्मिभिः ॥१९॥
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा मातलिः शक्रसारथिः ।
आरुरोह रथं शीघ्रं हयान्येमे च रश्मिभिः ॥१९॥
19. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā mātaliḥ śakrasārathiḥ ,
āruroha rathaṁ śīghraṁ hayānyeme ca raśmibhiḥ.
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā mātaliḥ śakrasārathiḥ ,
āruroha rathaṁ śīghraṁ hayānyeme ca raśmibhiḥ.

vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tasya tad vacanam śrutvā mātaliḥ
śakrasārathiḥ ārūroha ratham śīghram hayān yeme ca raśmibhiḥ
śakrasārathiḥ ārūroha ratham śīghram hayān yeme ca raśmibhiḥ
19.
Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard his words, Matali, Indra's charioteer, quickly mounted the chariot and controlled the horses with the reins.
ततोऽर्जुनो हृष्टमना गङ्गायामाप्लुतः शुचिः ।
जजाप जप्यं कौन्तेयो विधिवत्कुरुनन्दनः ॥२०॥
जजाप जप्यं कौन्तेयो विधिवत्कुरुनन्दनः ॥२०॥
20. tato'rjuno hṛṣṭamanā gaṅgāyāmāplutaḥ śuciḥ ,
jajāpa japyaṁ kaunteyo vidhivatkurunandanaḥ.

tataḥ arjunaḥ hṛṣṭamanā gaṅgāyām āplutaḥ śuciḥ

Then Arjuna, with a joyful mind, bathed in the Gaṅgā and became pure. The son of Kuntī, the delight of the Kurus, then recited the sacred verses (japya) in accordance with the prescribed rules.
ततः पितॄन्यथान्यायं तर्पयित्वा यथाविधि ।
मन्दरं शैलराजं तमाप्रष्टुमुपचक्रमे ॥२१॥

21. tataḥ pitṝnyathānyāyaṁ tarpayitvā yathāvidhi ,
mandaraṁ śailarājaṁ tamāpraṣṭumupacakrame.

Then, after properly propitiating his ancestors and performing the rites according to tradition, he began to ask permission from that king of mountains, Mandara.
साधूनां धर्मशीलानां मुनीनां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ।
त्वं सदा संश्रयः शैल स्वर्गमार्गाभिकाङ्क्षिणाम् ॥२२॥
त्वं सदा संश्रयः शैल स्वर्गमार्गाभिकाङ्क्षिणाम् ॥२२॥
22. sādhūnāṁ dharmaśīlānāṁ munīnāṁ puṇyakarmaṇām ,
tvaṁ sadā saṁśrayaḥ śaila svargamārgābhikāṅkṣiṇām.
tvaṁ sadā saṁśrayaḥ śaila svargamārgābhikāṅkṣiṇām.
22.
sādhūnām dharmaśīlānām munīnām puṇyakarmaṇām |
tvam sadā saṃśrayaḥ śaila svargamārgābhikāṅkṣiṇām
tvam sadā saṃśrayaḥ śaila svargamārgābhikāṅkṣiṇām
22.
O Mountain, you are always the refuge for the virtuous, for ascetics (munis) whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is righteous conduct, and for those performing meritorious deeds who aspire to the path to heaven.
त्वत्प्रसादात्सदा शैल ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया विशः ।
स्वर्गं प्राप्ताश्चरन्ति स्म देवैः सह गतव्यथाः ॥२३॥
स्वर्गं प्राप्ताश्चरन्ति स्म देवैः सह गतव्यथाः ॥२३॥
23. tvatprasādātsadā śaila brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā viśaḥ ,
svargaṁ prāptāścaranti sma devaiḥ saha gatavyathāḥ.

23.
tvatprasādāt sadā śaila brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyāḥ viśaḥ |
svargam prāptāḥ caranti sma devaiḥ saha gatavyathāḥ

23.
O Mountain, by your grace, Brahmins, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas always attain heaven and wander there with the gods, free from distress.
अद्रिराज महाशैल मुनिसंश्रय तीर्थवन् ।
गच्छाम्यामन्त्रयामि त्वां सुखमस्म्युषितस्त्वयि ॥२४॥
गच्छाम्यामन्त्रयामि त्वां सुखमस्म्युषितस्त्वयि ॥२४॥
24. adrirāja mahāśaila munisaṁśraya tīrthavan ,
gacchāmyāmantrayāmi tvāṁ sukhamasmyuṣitastvayi.

adrijāja mahāśaila munisaṃśraya tīrthavan gacchāmi
āmantrayāmi tvām sukham asmi uṣitaḥ tvayi
āmantrayāmi tvām sukham asmi uṣitaḥ tvayi
24.
O King of Mountains, O great mountain, refuge of sages, and possessor of holy places! I am now leaving and bid you farewell. I have resided happily with you.
तव सानूनि कुञ्जाश्च नद्यः प्रस्रवणानि च ।
तीर्थानि च सुपुण्यानि मया दृष्टान्यनेकशः ॥२५॥
तीर्थानि च सुपुण्यानि मया दृष्टान्यनेकशः ॥२५॥
25. tava sānūni kuñjāśca nadyaḥ prasravaṇāni ca ,
tīrthāni ca supuṇyāni mayā dṛṣṭānyanekaśaḥ.

tava sānūni kuñjāḥ ca nadyaḥ prasravaṇāni ca

I have seen your peaks, groves, rivers, springs, and very sacred holy places (tīrtha) countless times.
एवमुक्त्वार्जुनः शैलमामन्त्र्य परवीरहा ।

Having spoken thus, Arjuna, the slayer of hostile heroes, bid farewell to the mountain and ascended the divine chariot, shining like the sun.
स तेनादित्यरूपेण दिव्येनाद्भुतकर्मणा ।
ऊर्ध्वमाचक्रमे धीमान्प्रहृष्टः कुरुनन्दनः ॥२७॥

That intelligent (dhīmān) and greatly delighted (prahr̥ṣṭaḥ) scion of the Kuru dynasty (kurunandana) ascended upwards with that divine, sun-like form, which was capable of wondrous deeds.
सोऽदर्शनपथं यात्वा मर्त्यानां भूमिचारिणाम् ।
ददर्शाद्भुतरूपाणि विमानानि सहस्रशः ॥२८॥

28. so'darśanapathaṁ yātvā martyānāṁ bhūmicāriṇām ,

Having gone beyond the range of sight of mortals who dwell on the earth, he saw thousands of aerial vehicles (vimāna) of wondrous forms.
न तत्र सूर्यः सोमो वा द्योतते न च पावकः ।
स्वयैव प्रभया तत्र द्योतन्ते पुण्यलब्धया ॥२९॥

Neither the sun nor the moon, nor fire, shines there. Rather, they shine there by their own radiance, which they have obtained through merit.
तारारूपाणि यानीह दृश्यन्ते द्युतिमन्ति वै ।
दीपवद्विप्रकृष्टत्वादणूनि सुमहान्त्यपि ॥३०॥

30. tārārūpāṇi yānīha dṛśyante dyutimanti vai ,

Those luminous, star-like forms that are seen here on earth appear tiny, like lamps, due to their great distance, even though they are actually very large.
तानि तत्र प्रभास्वन्ति रूपवन्ति च पाण्डवः ।
ददर्श स्वेषु धिष्ण्येषु दीप्तिमन्ति स्वयार्चिषा ॥३१॥

31. tāni tatra prabhāsvanti rūpavanti ca pāṇḍavaḥ ,

And there, the son of Pāṇḍu saw those luminous and beautiful forms in their own abodes, shining with their personal radiance.
तत्र राजर्षयः सिद्धा वीराश्च निहता युधि ।
तपसा च जितस्वर्गाः संपेतुः शतसंघशः ॥३२॥

There, royal sages, perfected beings, and heroes slain in battle, who had also conquered heaven through their austerity (tapas), assembled in hundreds of multitudes.
गन्धर्वाणां सहस्राणि सूर्यज्वलनतेजसाम् ।
गुह्यकानामृषीणां च तथैवाप्सरसां गणाः ॥३३॥
गुह्यकानामृषीणां च तथैवाप्सरसां गणाः ॥३३॥
33. gandharvāṇāṁ sahasrāṇi sūryajvalanatejasām ,
guhyakānāmṛṣīṇāṁ ca tathaivāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ.

Thousands of Gandharvas, whose splendor was like the blazing sun, along with hosts of Guhyakas, sages, and Apsaras (were present).
लोकानात्मप्रभान्पश्यन्फल्गुनो विस्मयान्वितः ।
पप्रच्छ मातलिं प्रीत्या स चाप्येनमुवाच ह ॥३४॥

Seeing those beings shining with their own self (ātman) light, Arjuna (Phalguna) was filled with wonder. He affectionately asked Matali, and Matali, in turn, spoke to him.
एते सुकृतिनः पार्थ स्वेषु धिष्ण्येष्ववस्थिताः ।
यान्दृष्टवानसि विभो तारारूपाणि भूतले ॥३५॥

35. ete sukṛtinaḥ pārtha sveṣu dhiṣṇyeṣvavasthitāḥ ,

O Pārtha (Arjuna), these are the virtuous beings who reside in their own abodes. You, O mighty one, have seen them on earth in the form of stars.

ऐरावतं चतुर्दन्तं कैलासमिव शृङ्गिणम् ॥३६॥

Then he saw a white, victorious elephant named Airavata, standing at the gate, having four tusks, and resembling Mount Kailasa with its peaks.
स सिद्धमार्गमाक्रम्य कुरुपाण्डवसत्तमः ।
व्यरोचत यथा पूर्वं मान्धाता पार्थिवोत्तमः ॥३७॥

He, the foremost among the Kurus and Pandavas, having traversed the path of the perfected beings, shone just as the supreme king Mandhata shone before.

He, the lotus-eyed one, surpassed the worlds belonging to kings. Then he saw that city of Indra, Amaravati.
