तस्यां निशायां व्युष्टायां गते तस्मिन्द्विजोत्तमे ।
निष्क्रम्य गौतमोऽगच्छत्समुद्रं प्रति भारत ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tasyāṁ niśāyāṁ vyuṣṭāyāṁ gate tasmindvijottame ,

1. Bhishma said: O Bhārata, when that night had dawned and that excellent Brahmin (dvija) had departed, Gautama, having left, went towards the sea.
सामुद्रकान्स वणिजस्ततोऽपश्यत्स्थितान्पथि ।
स तेन सार्थेन सह प्रययौ सागरं प्रति ॥२॥
2. sāmudrakānsa vaṇijastato'paśyatsthitānpathi ,
sa tena sārthena saha prayayau sāgaraṁ prati.

2. He then saw sea-traders standing on the road. He, along with that caravan, set out towards the sea.
स तु सार्थो महाराज कस्मिंश्चिद्गिरिगह्वरे ।
मत्तेन द्विरदेनाथ निहतः प्रायशोऽभवत् ॥३॥
3. sa tu sārtho mahārāja kasmiṁścidgirigahvare ,
mattena dviradenātha nihataḥ prāyaśo'bhavat.
3. saḥ tu sārthaḥ mahārāja kasmin cit giri-gahvare
mattena dviradena atha nihataḥ prāyaśaḥ abhavat

3. But that caravan, O great king, was mostly destroyed in some mountain ravine by a maddened elephant.
स कथंचित्ततस्तस्मात्सार्थान्मुक्तो द्विजस्तदा ।
कांदिग्भूतो जीवितार्थी प्रदुद्रावोत्तरां दिशम् ॥४॥
4. sa kathaṁcittatastasmātsārthānmukto dvijastadā ,
kāṁdigbhūto jīvitārthī pradudrāvottarāṁ diśam.
4. saḥ kathaṃcit tataḥ tasmāt sārthāt muktaḥ dvijaḥ tadā
kāndigbhūtaḥ jīvitārthī pradudrāva uttarām diśam
4. tadā saḥ dvijaḥ kathaṃcit tataḥ tasmāt sārthāt muktaḥ
kāndigbhūtaḥ jīvitārthī uttarām diśam pradudrāva
4. That Brahmin (dvija), then, somehow freed from that caravan, became bewildered and, desiring to save his life, ran towards the northern direction.
स सर्वतः परिभ्रष्टः सार्थाद्देशात्तथार्थतः ।
एकाकी व्यद्रवत्तत्र वने किंपुरुषो यथा ॥५॥
5. sa sarvataḥ paribhraṣṭaḥ sārthāddeśāttathārthataḥ ,
ekākī vyadravattatra vane kiṁpuruṣo yathā.
5. sa sarvataḥ paribhraṣṭaḥ sārthāt deśāt tathā arthataḥ

5. Having lost everything - his company, his country, and his wealth - he fled alone into that forest, just like a Kiṃpuruṣa.
स पन्थानमथासाद्य समुद्राभिसरं तदा ।
आससाद वनं रम्यं महत्पुष्पितपादपम् ॥६॥
6. sa panthānamathāsādya samudrābhisaraṁ tadā ,
āsasāda vanaṁ ramyaṁ mahatpuṣpitapādapam.
6. sa panthānam atha āsādya samudra-abhisaram tadā
| āsasāda vanam ramyam mahat puṣpita-pādapam
6. sa atha samudra-abhisaram panthānam āsādya tadā
ramyam mahat puṣpita-pādapam vanam āsasāda
6. Then, having found a path leading to the ocean, he reached a beautiful, vast forest adorned with blossoming trees.
सर्वर्तुकैराम्रवनैः पुष्पितैरुपशोभितम् ।
नन्दनोद्देशसदृशं यक्षकिंनरसेवितम् ॥७॥
7. sarvartukairāmravanaiḥ puṣpitairupaśobhitam ,
nandanoddeśasadṛśaṁ yakṣakiṁnarasevitam.
7. sarva-ṛtukaiḥ āmra-vanaiḥ puṣpitaiḥ upaśobhitam
| nandana-uddeśa-sadṛśam yakṣa-kiṃnara-sevitam
7. sarva-ṛtukaiḥ puṣpitaiḥ āmra-vanaiḥ upaśobhitam
nandana-uddeśa-sadṛśam yakṣa-kiṃnara-sevitam
7. It was adorned with mango groves yielding fruits and flowers in all seasons, resembling a part of Nandanavana, and inhabited by Yakṣas and Kiṃnaras.
शालतालधवाश्वत्थत्वचागुरुवनैस्तथा ।
चन्दनस्य च मुख्यस्य पादपैरुपशोभितम् ।
गिरिप्रस्थेषु रम्येषु शुभेषु सुसुगन्धिषु ॥८॥
8. śālatāladhavāśvatthatvacāguruvanaistathā ,
candanasya ca mukhyasya pādapairupaśobhitam ,
giriprastheṣu ramyeṣu śubheṣu susugandhiṣu.
8. śāla-tāla-dhava-aśvattha-tvacā-aguru-vanaiḥ
tathā | candanasya ca
mukhyasya pādapaiḥ upaśobhitam |
giri-prastheṣu ramyeṣu śubheṣu su-sugandhiṣu
8. tathā śāla-tāla-dhava-aśvattha-tvacā-aguru-vanaiḥ
ca mukhyasya candanasya
pādapaiḥ ramyeṣu śubheṣu
su-sugandhiṣu giri-prastheṣu upaśobhitam
8. It was also adorned with groves of Sal, Palmyra, Dhava, Ashvattha, Tvaca, and Aguru trees, as well as with prominent sandalwood trees, situated on beautiful, auspicious, and very fragrant mountain slopes.
समन्ततो द्विजश्रेष्ठा वल्गु कूजन्ति तत्र वै ।
मनुष्यवदनास्त्वन्ये भारुण्डा इति विश्रुताः ।
भूलिङ्गशकुनाश्चान्ये समुद्रं सर्वतोऽभवन् ॥९॥
9. samantato dvijaśreṣṭhā valgu kūjanti tatra vai ,
manuṣyavadanāstvanye bhāruṇḍā iti viśrutāḥ ,
bhūliṅgaśakunāścānye samudraṁ sarvato'bhavan.
9. samantataḥ dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ valgu kūjanti
tatra vai manuṣyavadanāḥ tu anye
bhāruṇḍāḥ iti viśrutāḥ bhūliṅgaśakunāḥ

bhūliṅgaśakunāḥ samudram sarvataḥ abhavan
9. All around that place, excellent birds cooed sweetly. Others, known as Bhāruṇḍa birds, had human faces. And still others, Bhūliṅga birds, were present all around the ocean.
स तान्यतिमनोज्ञानि विहंगाभिरुतानि वै ।
शृण्वन्सुरमणीयानि विप्रोऽगच्छत गौतमः ॥१०॥
10. sa tānyatimanojñāni vihaṁgābhirutāni vai ,
śṛṇvansuramaṇīyāni vipro'gacchata gautamaḥ.
10. saḥ tāni atimanōjñāni vihaṅgābhirutāni vai
śṛṇvan suramaṇīyāni vipraḥ agacchat gautamaḥ
10. saḥ gautamaḥ vipraḥ vai tāni atimanōjñāni
suramaṇīyāni vihaṅgābhirutāni śṛṇvan agacchat
10. Indeed, hearing those exceedingly charming and delightful bird-songs, the Brahmin Gautama proceeded.
ततोऽपश्यत्सुरम्ये स सुवर्णसिकताचिते ।
देशभागे समे चित्रे स्वर्गोद्देशसमप्रभे ॥११॥
11. tato'paśyatsuramye sa suvarṇasikatācite ,
deśabhāge same citre svargoddeśasamaprabhe.
11. tataḥ apaśyat suramye saḥ suvarṇasikatācite
deśabhāge same citre svargoddeśasamaprabhe
11. tataḥ saḥ suvarṇasikatācite suramye same
citre svargoddeśasamaprabhe deśabhāge apaśyat
11. Then he saw a supremely beautiful, level, and picturesque region, covered with golden sands, and shining like a section of heaven.
श्रिया जुष्टं महावृक्षं न्यग्रोधं परिमण्डलम् ।
शाखाभिरनुरूपाभिर्भूषितं छत्रसंनिभम् ॥१२॥
12. śriyā juṣṭaṁ mahāvṛkṣaṁ nyagrodhaṁ parimaṇḍalam ,
śākhābhiranurūpābhirbhūṣitaṁ chatrasaṁnibham.
12. śriyā juṣṭam mahāvṛkṣam nyagrodham parimaṇḍalam
śākhābhiḥ anurūpābhiḥ bhūṣitam chatrasannibham
12. (saḥ apaśyat) mahāvṛkṣam nyagrodham śriyā juṣṭam
parimaṇḍalam anurūpābhiḥ śākhābhiḥ bhūṣitam chatrasannibham
12. (He saw) a great banyan tree, endowed with splendor, round and expansive, adorned with well-proportioned branches, resembling an umbrella.
तस्य मूलं सुसंसिक्तं वरचन्दनवारिणा ।
दिव्यपुष्पान्वितं श्रीमत्पितामहसदोपमम् ॥१३॥
13. tasya mūlaṁ susaṁsiktaṁ varacandanavāriṇā ,
divyapuṣpānvitaṁ śrīmatpitāmahasadopamam.
13. tasya mūlam susaṃsiktam varacandanavāriṇā
divyapuṣpānvitam śrīmat pitāmahasadopamam
13. tasya mūlam varacandanavāriṇā susaṃsiktam
divyapuṣpānvitam śrīmat pitāmahasadopamam
13. Its root was thoroughly watered with excellent sandalwood-scented water, glorious, adorned with divine flowers, and resembled the assembly hall of Brahmā (Pitāmaha).
तं दृष्ट्वा गौतमः प्रीतो मुनिकान्तमनुत्तमम् ।
मेध्यं सुरगृहप्रख्यं पुष्पितैः पादपैर्वृतम् ।
तमागम्य मुदा युक्तस्तस्याधस्तादुपाविशत् ॥१४॥
14. taṁ dṛṣṭvā gautamaḥ prīto munikāntamanuttamam ,
medhyaṁ suragṛhaprakhyaṁ puṣpitaiḥ pādapairvṛtam ,
tamāgamya mudā yuktastasyādhastādupāviśat.
14. tam dṛṣṭvā gautamaḥ prītaḥ munikāntam
anuttamam medhyam suragṛhaprakhyam
puṣpitaiḥ pādapaiḥ vṛtam tam āgamya
mudā yuktaḥ tasya adhastāt upāviśat

suragṛhaprakhyam puṣpitaiḥ pādapaiḥ
vṛtam tam dṛṣṭvā prītaḥ tam āgamya
mudā yuktaḥ tasya adhastāt upāviśat
14. Having seen that tree, which was dear to ascetics, unsurpassed, sacred, resembling a divine abode, and surrounded by flowering trees, Gautama was delighted. Approaching it, filled with joy, he sat down beneath it.
तत्रासीनस्य कौरव्य गौतमस्य सुखः शिवः ।
पुष्पाणि समुपस्पृश्य प्रववावनिलः शुचिः ।
ह्लादयन्सर्वगात्राणि गौतमस्य तदा नृप ॥१५॥
15. tatrāsīnasya kauravya gautamasya sukhaḥ śivaḥ ,
puṣpāṇi samupaspṛśya pravavāvanilaḥ śuciḥ ,
hlādayansarvagātrāṇi gautamasya tadā nṛpa.
15. tatra āsīnasya kauravya gautamasya
sukhaḥ śivaḥ puṣpāṇi samupaspṛśya
pravavāva anilaḥ śuciḥ hlādayan
sarvagātrāṇi gautamasya tadā nṛpa
15. kauravya nṛpa tatra āsīnasya
gautamasya puṣpāṇi samupaspṛśya sukhaḥ
śivaḥ śuciḥ anilaḥ pravavāva tadā
gautamasya sarvagātrāṇi hlādayan
15. O descendant of Kuru, O King, while Gautama was sitting there, a pleasant, auspicious, and pure wind blew, having thoroughly touched the flowers. Then, it delighted all of Gautama's limbs.
स तु विप्रः परिश्रान्तः स्पृष्टः पुण्येन वायुना ।
सुखमासाद्य सुष्वाप भास्करश्चास्तमभ्यगात् ॥१६॥
16. sa tu vipraḥ pariśrāntaḥ spṛṣṭaḥ puṇyena vāyunā ,
sukhamāsādya suṣvāpa bhāskaraścāstamabhyagāt.
16. saḥ tu vipraḥ pariśrāntaḥ spṛṣṭaḥ puṇyena vāyunā
sukham āsaṃsādya suṣvāpa bhāskaraḥ ca astam abhyagāt
16. saḥ tu pariśrāntaḥ puṇyena vāyunā spṛṣṭaḥ vipraḥ
sukham āsaṃsādya suṣvāpa ca bhāskaraḥ astam abhyagāt
16. But that Brahmin, fatigued and touched by the sacred (puṇya) wind, attained comfort and slept. And the sun, the radiant one (bhāskara), also went to its setting.
ततोऽस्तं भास्करे याते संध्याकाल उपस्थिते ।
आजगाम स्वभवनं ब्रह्मलोकात्खगोत्तमः ॥१७॥
17. tato'staṁ bhāskare yāte saṁdhyākāla upasthite ,
ājagāma svabhavanaṁ brahmalokātkhagottamaḥ.
17. tatas astam bhāskare yāte sandhyākālaḥ upasthite
ājagāma svabhavanam brahmalokāt khagottamaḥ
17. tatas bhāskare astam yāte sandhyākālaḥ upasthite
khagottamaḥ brahmalokāt svabhavanam ājagāma
17. Then, when the sun had set and twilight approached, the best of birds returned to his own abode from Brahmaloka (the world of Brahmā).
नाडीजङ्घ इति ख्यातो दयितो ब्रह्मणः सखा ।
बकराजो महाप्राज्ञः कश्यपस्यात्मसंभवः ॥१८॥
18. nāḍījaṅgha iti khyāto dayito brahmaṇaḥ sakhā ,
bakarājo mahāprājñaḥ kaśyapasyātmasaṁbhavaḥ.
18. nāḍījaṅghaḥ iti khyātaḥ dayitaḥ brahmaṇaḥ sakhā
bakarājaḥ mahāprājñaḥ kaśyapasya ātmasambhavaḥ
18. nāḍījaṅghaḥ iti khyātaḥ brahmaṇaḥ dayitaḥ sakhā
bakarājaḥ mahāprājñaḥ kaśyapasya ātmasambhavaḥ
18. Known as Nāḍījaṅgha, he was the dear friend of Brahmā, the king of cranes, highly intelligent, and the self-born son of Kaśyapa.
राजधर्मेति विख्यातो बभूवाप्रतिमो भुवि ।
देवकन्यासुतः श्रीमान्विद्वान्देवपतिप्रभः ॥१९॥
19. rājadharmeti vikhyāto babhūvāpratimo bhuvi ,
devakanyāsutaḥ śrīmānvidvāndevapatiprabhaḥ.
19. rājadharmaḥ iti vikhyātaḥ babhūva apratimaḥ bhuvi
devakanyāsutaḥ śrīmān vidvān devapatiprabhaḥ
19. rājadharmaḥ iti vikhyātaḥ saḥ devakanyāsutaḥ śrīmān
vidvān devapatiprabhaḥ bhuvi apratimaḥ babhūva
19. Known as Rājadharma, he became unequalled on earth, glorious, a scholar, and radiant like the lord of gods, being the son of a celestial maiden.
मृष्टहाटकसंछन्नो भूषणैरर्कसंनिभैः ।
भूषितः सर्वगात्रेषु देवगर्भः श्रिया ज्वलन् ॥२०॥
20. mṛṣṭahāṭakasaṁchanno bhūṣaṇairarkasaṁnibhaiḥ ,
bhūṣitaḥ sarvagātreṣu devagarbhaḥ śriyā jvalan.
20. mṛṣṭahāṭakasaṃchannaḥ bhūṣaṇaiḥ arkasaṃnibhaiḥ
bhūṣitaḥ sarvagātreṣu devagarbhaḥ śriyā jvalan
20. mṛṣṭahāṭakasaṃchannaḥ arkasaṃnibhaiḥ bhūṣaṇaiḥ
sarvagātreṣu bhūṣitaḥ devagarbhaḥ śriyā jvalan
20. Covered with refined gold, adorned with ornaments shining like the sun on all his limbs, the divine being (lit. 'god-embryo') shone with splendor.
तमागतं द्विजं दृष्ट्वा विस्मितो गौतमोऽभवत् ।
क्षुत्पिपासापरीतात्मा हिंसार्थी चाप्यवैक्षत ॥२१॥
21. tamāgataṁ dvijaṁ dṛṣṭvā vismito gautamo'bhavat ,
kṣutpipāsāparītātmā hiṁsārthī cāpyavaikṣata.
21. tam āgatam dvijam dṛṣṭvā vismitaḥ Gautamaḥ abhavat
kṣutpipāsāparītātmā hiṃsārthī ca api avaikṣata
21. Gautamaḥ tam āgatam dvijam dṛṣṭvā vismitaḥ abhavat
kṣutpipāsāparītātmā ca api hiṃsārthī avaikṣata
21. When Gautama saw that brahmin (dvija) who had arrived, he was astonished. With his being afflicted by hunger and thirst, he also looked at him with the intention of violence.
राजधर्मोवाच ।
स्वागतं भवते विप्र दिष्ट्या प्राप्तोऽसि मे गृहम् ।
अस्तं च सविता यातः संध्येयं समुपस्थिता ॥२२॥
22. rājadharmovāca ,
svāgataṁ bhavate vipra diṣṭyā prāpto'si me gṛham ,
astaṁ ca savitā yātaḥ saṁdhyeyaṁ samupasthitā.
22. rājadharmaḥ uvāca svāgatam bhavate vipra diṣṭyā prāptaḥ asi
me gṛham astam ca savitā yātaḥ saṃdhyā iyam samupasthitā
22. Rājadharmaḥ uvāca.
Vipra,
bhavate svāgatam.
Diṣṭyā me gṛham prāptaḥ asi.
Ca savitā astam yātaḥ.
Iyam saṃdhyā samupasthitā.
22. Rajadharma spoke: "Welcome to you, O brahmin (vipra)! Fortunately, you have come to my house. The sun (savitā) has set, and this twilight (saṃdhyā) has just appeared."
मम त्वं निलयं प्राप्तः प्रियातिथिरनिन्दितः ।
पूजितो यास्यसि प्रातर्विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥२३॥
23. mama tvaṁ nilayaṁ prāptaḥ priyātithiraninditaḥ ,
pūjito yāsyasi prātarvidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā.
23. mama tvam nilayam prāptaḥ priya-atithiḥ aninditaḥ
pūjitaḥ yāsyasi prātaḥ vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā
23. Tvam mama nilayam prāptaḥ,
priya-atithiḥ aninditaḥ (asi).
Pūjitaḥ vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā prātaḥ yāsyasi.
23. You, a blameless and cherished guest, have arrived at my abode. Having been duly honored by prescribed actions (karma) according to sacred law (vidhi), you shall depart in the morning.
