अर्जुन उवाच ।
ततोऽश्मवर्षं सुमहत्प्रादुरासीत्समन्ततः ।
नगमात्रैर्महाघोरैस्तन्मां दृढमपीडयत् ॥१॥
1. arjuna uvāca ,
tato'śmavarṣaṁ sumahatprādurāsītsamantataḥ ,
nagamātrairmahāghoraistanmāṁ dṛḍhamapīḍayat.
1. Arjunaḥ uvāca tataḥ aśmavarṣam sumahat prādurāsīt
samantataḥ nagamātraiḥ mahāghoraiḥ tat mām dṛḍham apīḍayat
1. Arjuna said: Then a very great rain of stones, mountain-sized and extremely dreadful, appeared all around. That severely tormented me.
तदहं वज्रसंकाशैः शरैरिन्द्रास्त्रचोदितैः ।
अचूर्णयं वेगवद्भिः शतधैकैकमाहवे ॥२॥
2. tadahaṁ vajrasaṁkāśaiḥ śarairindrāstracoditaiḥ ,
acūrṇayaṁ vegavadbhiḥ śatadhaikaikamāhave.
2. tat aham vajrasaṃkāśaiḥ śaraiḥ indrāstracoditaiḥ
acūrṇayam vegavadbhiḥ śatadhā ekaikam āhave
2. I, in battle, crushed each of those (stones), which were like thunderbolts and propelled by Indra's weapon, into a hundred pieces with swift arrows.
चूर्ण्यमानेऽश्मवर्षे तु पावकः समजायत ।
तत्राश्मचूर्णमपतत्पावकप्रकरा इव ॥३॥
3. cūrṇyamāne'śmavarṣe tu pāvakaḥ samajāyata ,
tatrāśmacūrṇamapatatpāvakaprakarā iva.
3. cūrṇyamāne aśmavarṣe tu pāvakaḥ samajāyata
tatra aśmacūrṇam apatat pāvakaprakarāḥ iva
3. But while the stone-rain was being crushed, fire (pāvaka) arose. Thereupon, the powdered stones fell like showers of fire.
ततोऽश्मवर्षे निहते जलवर्षं महत्तरम् ।
धाराभिरक्षमात्राभिः प्रादुरासीन्ममान्तिके ॥४॥
4. tato'śmavarṣe nihate jalavarṣaṁ mahattaram ,
dhārābhirakṣamātrābhiḥ prādurāsīnmamāntike.
4. tataḥ aśmavarṣe nihate jalavarṣam mahattaram
dhārābhiḥ akṣamātrābhiḥ prādurāsīt mama antike
4. Then, with the stone-rain having been destroyed, an even greater rain of water, with streams as thick as chariot axles, appeared near me.
नभसः प्रच्युता धारास्तिग्मवीर्याः सहस्रशः ।
आवृण्वन्सर्वतो व्योम दिशश्चोपदिशस्तथा ॥५॥
5. nabhasaḥ pracyutā dhārāstigmavīryāḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
āvṛṇvansarvato vyoma diśaścopadiśastathā.
5. nabhasaḥ pracyutāḥ dhārāḥ tigmavīryāḥ sahasraśaḥ
| āvṛṇvan sarvataḥ vyoma diśaḥ ca upadiśaḥ tathā
5. Thousands of fiercely potent streams of water, having fallen from the sky, completely enveloped the atmosphere from all sides, along with the cardinal and intermediate directions.
धाराणां च निपातेन वायोर्विस्फूर्जितेन च ।
गर्जितेन च दैत्यानां न प्राज्ञायत किंचन ॥६॥
6. dhārāṇāṁ ca nipātena vāyorvisphūrjitena ca ,
garjitena ca daityānāṁ na prājñāyata kiṁcana.
6. dhārāṇām ca nipātena vāyoḥ visphūrjitena ca |
garjitena ca daityānām na prājñāyata kiñcana
6. Owing to the incessant fall of the streams, the violent roaring of the wind, and the thunderous cries of the Daityas, nothing whatsoever could be discerned.
धारा दिवि च संबद्धा वसुधायां च सर्वशः ।
व्यामोहयन्त मां तत्र निपतन्त्योऽनिशं भुवि ॥७॥
7. dhārā divi ca saṁbaddhā vasudhāyāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ ,
vyāmohayanta māṁ tatra nipatantyo'niśaṁ bhuvi.
7. dhārāḥ divi ca saṃbaddhāḥ vasudhāyām ca sarvaśaḥ
| vyāmohayanta mām tatra nipatantyaḥ aniśam bhuvi
7. The streams, connected both in the sky and completely across the earth, falling incessantly upon the ground there, bewildered me.
तत्रोपदिष्टमिन्द्रेण दिव्यमस्त्रं विशोषणम् ।
दीप्तं प्राहिणवं घोरमशुष्यत्तेन तज्जलम् ॥८॥
8. tatropadiṣṭamindreṇa divyamastraṁ viśoṣaṇam ,
dīptaṁ prāhiṇavaṁ ghoramaśuṣyattena tajjalam.
8. tatra upadiṣṭam indreṇa divyam astram viśoṣaṇam
| dīptam prāhiṇavam ghoram aśuṣyat tena tat jalam
8. Then, a divine weapon (astra), meant for desiccation, blazing and formidable, which had been revealed by Indra, I hurled. By its power, that water completely dried up.
हतेऽश्मवर्षे तु मया जलवर्षे च शोषिते ।
मुमुचुर्दानवा मायामग्निं वायुं च मानद ॥९॥
9. hate'śmavarṣe tu mayā jalavarṣe ca śoṣite ,
mumucurdānavā māyāmagniṁ vāyuṁ ca mānada.
9. hate aśmavarṣe tu mayā jalavarṣe ca śoṣite
mumucuḥ dānavāḥ māyām agnim vāyum ca mānada
9. However, when I had stopped the hail of stones and dried up the downpour of water, O giver of honor, the demons unleashed their illusory power (māyā), along with fire and wind.
ततोऽहमग्निं व्यधमं सलिलास्त्रेण सर्वशः ।
शैलेन च महास्त्रेण वायोर्वेगमधारयम् ॥१०॥
10. tato'hamagniṁ vyadhamaṁ salilāstreṇa sarvaśaḥ ,
śailena ca mahāstreṇa vāyorvegamadhārayam.
10. tataḥ aham agnim vyadhamam salilāstreṇa sarvaśaḥ
śailena ca mahāstreṇa vāyoḥ vegam adhārayam
10. Then I completely extinguished the fire with the water-weapon. And with the powerful mountain-weapon, I checked the force of the wind.
तस्यां प्रतिहतायां तु दानवा युद्धदुर्मदाः ।
प्राकुर्वन्विविधा माया यौगपद्येन भारत ॥११॥
11. tasyāṁ pratihatāyāṁ tu dānavā yuddhadurmadāḥ ,
prākurvanvividhā māyā yaugapadyena bhārata.
11. tasyām pratihatāyām tu dānavāḥ yuddhadurmadāḥ
prākurvan vividhāḥ māyāḥ yaugapadyena bhārata
11. However, when that (illusory power) had been repelled, the demons, driven mad by battle, created various other magical illusions (māyā) simultaneously, O Bhārata.
ततो वर्षं प्रादुरभूत्सुमहल्लोमहर्षणम् ।
अस्त्राणां घोररूपाणामग्नेर्वायोस्तथाश्मनाम् ॥१२॥
12. tato varṣaṁ prādurabhūtsumahallomaharṣaṇam ,
astrāṇāṁ ghorarūpāṇāmagnervāyostathāśmanām.
12. tataḥ varṣam prādurabhūt sumahat lomaharṣaṇam
astrāṇām ghorarūpāṇām agneḥ vāyoḥ tathā aśmanām
12. Then a tremendous, terrifying downpour manifested, consisting of dreadful weapons, fire, wind, and stones.
सा तु मायामयी वृष्टिः पीडयामास मां युधि ।
अथ घोरं तमस्तीव्रं प्रादुरासीत्समन्ततः ॥१३॥
13. sā tu māyāmayī vṛṣṭiḥ pīḍayāmāsa māṁ yudhi ,
atha ghoraṁ tamastīvraṁ prādurāsītsamantataḥ.
13. sā tu māyāmayī vṛṣṭiḥ pīḍayāmāsa mām yudhi
atha ghoram tamaḥ tīvram prādurāsīt samantataḥ
13. That shower, created by illusion (māyā), indeed tormented me in battle. Then, a dreadful, intense darkness appeared all around.
तमसा संवृते लोके घोरेण परुषेण च ।
तुरगा विमुखाश्चासन्प्रास्खलच्चापि मातलिः ॥१४॥
14. tamasā saṁvṛte loke ghoreṇa paruṣeṇa ca ,
turagā vimukhāścāsanprāskhalaccāpi mātaliḥ.
14. tamasā saṃvṛte loke ghoreṇa paruṣeṇa ca turagā
vimukhāḥ ca āsan prāskhalat ca api mātaliḥ
14. As the world was enveloped by dreadful and harsh darkness, the horses turned away, and Mātali himself stumbled.
हस्ताद्धिरण्मयश्चास्य प्रतोदः प्रापतद्भुवि ।
असकृच्चाह मां भीतः क्वासीति भरतर्षभ ॥१५॥
15. hastāddhiraṇmayaścāsya pratodaḥ prāpatadbhuvi ,
asakṛccāha māṁ bhītaḥ kvāsīti bharatarṣabha.
15. hastāt hiraṇmayaḥ ca asya pratodaḥ prāpatat bhuvi
asakṛt ca āha mām bhītaḥ kva asi iti bharatarṣabha
15. From his hand, his golden goad also fell to the ground. Frightened, he repeatedly asked me, 'Where are you, O bull among the Bharatas (bharatarṣabha)?'
मां च भीराविशत्तीव्रा तस्मिन्विगतचेतसि ।
स च मां विगतज्ञानः संत्रस्त इदमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. māṁ ca bhīrāviśattīvrā tasminvigatacetasi ,
sa ca māṁ vigatajñānaḥ saṁtrasta idamabravīt.
16. mām ca bhīḥ āviśat tīvrā tasmin vigatacetasi
saḥ ca mām vigatajñānaḥ saṃtrastaḥ idam abravīt
16. And intense fear entered me as he became bewildered. And he, having lost his senses (vigatajñāna) and utterly terrified, said this to me.
सुराणामसुराणां च संग्रामः सुमहानभूत् ।
अमृतार्थे पुरा पार्थ स च दृष्टो मयानघ ॥१७॥
17. surāṇāmasurāṇāṁ ca saṁgrāmaḥ sumahānabhūt ,
amṛtārthe purā pārtha sa ca dṛṣṭo mayānagha.
17. surāṇām asurāṇām ca saṅgrāmaḥ sumahān abhūt
amṛtārthe purā pārtha saḥ ca dṛṣṭaḥ mayā anagha
17. O Pārtha, O sinless one, in ancient times there was a very great battle between the gods and the demons for the sake of the nectar of immortality, and I witnessed that.
शम्बरस्य वधे चापि संग्रामः सुमहानभूत् ।
सारथ्यं देवराजस्य तत्रापि कृतवानहम् ॥१८॥
18. śambarasya vadhe cāpi saṁgrāmaḥ sumahānabhūt ,
sārathyaṁ devarājasya tatrāpi kṛtavānaham.
18. śambarasya vadhe ca api saṅgrāmaḥ sumahān abhūt
sārathyam devarājasya tatra api kṛtavān aham
18. Also, there was a very great battle during the slaying of Śambara. In that instance, too, I performed the charioteering for the king of the gods.
तथैव वृत्रस्य वधे संगृहीता हया मया ।
वैरोचनेर्मया युद्धं दृष्टं चापि सुदारुणम् ॥१९॥
19. tathaiva vṛtrasya vadhe saṁgṛhītā hayā mayā ,
vairocanermayā yuddhaṁ dṛṣṭaṁ cāpi sudāruṇam.
19. tathā eva vṛtrasya vadhe saṅgṛhītāḥ hayāḥ mayā
vairocaneḥ mayā yuddham dṛṣṭam ca api sudāruṇam
19. Similarly, during the slaying of Vṛtra, I controlled the horses. I also witnessed the very terrible battle of Virocana's son (Bali).
एते मया महाघोराः संग्रामाः पर्युपासिताः ।
न चापि विगतज्ञानो भूतपूर्वोऽस्मि पाण्डव ॥२०॥
20. ete mayā mahāghorāḥ saṁgrāmāḥ paryupāsitāḥ ,
na cāpi vigatajñāno bhūtapūrvo'smi pāṇḍava.
20. ete mayā mahāghorāḥ saṅgrāmāḥ paryupāsitāḥ na
ca api vigatajñānaḥ bhūtapūrvaḥ asmi pāṇḍava
20. I participated in these very terrible battles. And, O son of Pāṇḍu, I have never before been deprived of knowledge.
पितामहेन संहारः प्रजानां विहितो ध्रुवम् ।
न हि युद्धमिदं युक्तमन्यत्र जगतः क्षयात् ॥२१॥
21. pitāmahena saṁhāraḥ prajānāṁ vihito dhruvam ,
na hi yuddhamidaṁ yuktamanyatra jagataḥ kṣayāt.
21. pitāmahena saṃhāraḥ prajānām vihitaḥ dhruvam na
hi yuddham idam yuktam anyatra jagataḥ kṣayāt
21. Indeed, this destruction of creatures was certainly ordained by the grandfather (Brahma). This war is not proper, except for the annihilation of the world.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा संस्तभ्यात्मानमात्मना ।
मोहयिष्यन्दानवानामहं मायामयं बलम् ॥२२॥
22. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā saṁstabhyātmānamātmanā ,
mohayiṣyandānavānāmahaṁ māyāmayaṁ balam.
22. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā saṃstabhya ātmānam
ātmanā mohayiṣyan dānavānām aham māyāmayam balam
22. Having heard his words, and having steadied my self (ātman) by my own self (ātman), I, intending to delude the illusory power (māyā) of the Daṇavas...
अब्रुवं मातलिं भीतं पश्य मे भुजयोर्बलम् ।
अस्त्राणां च प्रभावं मे धनुषो गाण्डिवस्य च ॥२३॥
23. abruvaṁ mātaliṁ bhītaṁ paśya me bhujayorbalam ,
astrāṇāṁ ca prabhāvaṁ me dhanuṣo gāṇḍivasya ca.
23. abruvam mātalim bhītam paśya me bhujayoḥ balam
astrāṇām ca prabhāvam me dhanuṣaḥ gāṇḍivasya ca
23. I said to Mātali, who was frightened: 'Behold the strength of my arms, and the power (prabhāva) of my divine weapons (astra), and of my bow, the Gaṇḍīva!'
अद्यास्त्रमाययैतेषां मायामेतां सुदारुणाम् ।
विनिहन्मि तमश्चोग्रं मा भैः सूत स्थिरो भव ॥२४॥
24. adyāstramāyayaiteṣāṁ māyāmetāṁ sudāruṇām ,
vinihanmi tamaścograṁ mā bhaiḥ sūta sthiro bhava.
24. adya astramāyayā eteṣām māyām etām sudāruṇām
vinihanmi tamaḥ ca ugram mā bhaiḥ sūta sthiraḥ bhava
24. Today, with the illusory power (māyā) of my divine weapons (astra), I shall destroy this exceedingly terrible illusion (māyā) of theirs and their fierce darkness. Do not be afraid, O charioteer, be steadfast!
एवमुक्त्वाहमसृजमस्त्रमायां नराधिप ।
मोहनीं सर्वशत्रूणां हिताय त्रिदिवौकसाम् ॥२५॥
25. evamuktvāhamasṛjamastramāyāṁ narādhipa ,
mohanīṁ sarvaśatrūṇāṁ hitāya tridivaukasām.
25. evam uktvā aham asṛjam astramāyām narādhipa
mohanīm sarvaśatrūṇām hitāya tridivaukasām
25. Having spoken thus, O king of men, I created an illusory weapon (māyā) that bewilders all enemies, for the benefit of the gods.
पीड्यमानासु मायासु तासु तास्वसुरेश्वराः ।
पुनर्बहुविधा मायाः प्राकुर्वन्नमितौजसः ॥२६॥
26. pīḍyamānāsu māyāsu tāsu tāsvasureśvarāḥ ,
punarbahuvidhā māyāḥ prākurvannamitaujasaḥ.
26. pīḍyamānāsu māyāsu tāsu tāsu asureśvarāḥ
punar bahuvidhāḥ māyāḥ prākurvan amitojasaḥ
26. As those illusions (māyā) were being countered and tormented, the lords of the asuras, who possessed immeasurable power, in turn created many diverse illusions (māyā).
पुनः प्रकाशमभवत्तमसा ग्रस्यते पुनः ।
व्रजत्यदर्शनं लोकः पुनरप्सु निमज्जति ॥२७॥
27. punaḥ prakāśamabhavattamasā grasyate punaḥ ,
vrajatyadarśanaṁ lokaḥ punarapsu nimajjati.
27. punar prakāśam abhavat tamasā grasyate punar
vrajati adarśanam lokaḥ punar apsu nimajjati
27. Again, there was light, then it was again engulfed by darkness. The world vanishes from sight, and again it sinks into the waters.
सुसंगृहीतैर्हरिभिः प्रकाशे सति मातलिः ।
व्यचरत्स्यन्दनाग्र्येण संग्रामे लोमहर्षणे ॥२८॥
28. susaṁgṛhītairharibhiḥ prakāśe sati mātaliḥ ,
vyacaratsyandanāgryeṇa saṁgrāme lomaharṣaṇe.
28. susaṃgṛhītaiḥ haribhiḥ prakāśe sati mātaliḥ
vyacarat syandanāgryeṇa saṃgrāme lomaharṣaṇe
28. With the light present, Mātali maneuvered his excellent chariot, drawn by well-reined horses, in that hair-raising battle.
ततः पर्यपतन्नुग्रा निवातकवचा मयि ।
तानहं विवरं दृष्ट्वा प्राहिण्वं यमसादनम् ॥२९॥
29. tataḥ paryapatannugrā nivātakavacā mayi ,
tānahaṁ vivaraṁ dṛṣṭvā prāhiṇvaṁ yamasādanam.
29. tataḥ paryapatan ugrāḥ nivātakavacā mayi tān
aham vivaram dṛṣṭvā prāhiṇvam yamasādanam
29. Then, the fierce Nivātakavacas attacked me. Seeing an opening, I dispatched them to the abode of Yama.
वर्तमाने तथा युद्धे निवातकवचान्तके ।
नापश्यं सहसा सर्वान्दानवान्माययावृतान् ॥३०॥
30. vartamāne tathā yuddhe nivātakavacāntake ,
nāpaśyaṁ sahasā sarvāndānavānmāyayāvṛtān.
30. vartamāne tathā yuddhe nivātakavacāntake na
apaśyam sahasā sarvān dānavān māyayā āvṛtān
30. While that battle, which was for the annihilation of the Nivātakavacas, was ongoing, I suddenly could not see all the Dānavas, who were enveloped by illusion (māyā).
