जनमेजय उवाच ।
शत्रुभिर्जितबद्धस्य पाण्डवैश्च महात्मभिः ।
मोक्षितस्य युधा पश्चान्मानस्थस्य दुरात्मनः ॥१॥

Janamejaya said: "Concerning that evil-minded (durātmanaḥ) and proud one, who was defeated and captured by his enemies, and afterwards liberated through battle by the high-souled (mahātman) Pandavas...
कत्थनस्यावलिप्तस्य गर्वितस्य च नित्यशः ।
सदा च पौरुषौदार्यैः पाण्डवानवमन्यतः ॥२॥

...of the boastful, arrogant, and perpetually proud one, who always scorned the Pandavas with his (supposed) heroism (pauruṣa) and generosity.
दुर्योधनस्य पापस्य नित्याहंकारवादिनः ।
प्रवेशो हास्तिनपुरे दुष्करः प्रतिभाति मे ॥३॥

To me, it seems difficult for that sinful Duryodhana, who is perpetually arrogant (ahaṅkāra-vādin), to enter Hastinapura.

प्रवेशं विस्तरेण त्वं वैशंपायन कीर्तय ॥४॥

O Vaiśampāyana, please describe in detail his entry, for he was filled with shame and his mind was agitated by sorrow.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
धर्मराजनिसृष्टस्तु धार्तराष्ट्रः सुयोधनः ।
लज्जयाधोमुखः सीदन्नुपासर्पत्सुदुःखितः ॥५॥

Vaiśampāyana said: Duryodhana, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, dismissed by the king upholding natural law (dharma-rāja), approached in great distress, his face bowed down in shame, sinking.
स्वपुरं प्रययौ राजा चतुरङ्गबलानुगः ।
शोकोपहतया बुद्ध्या चिन्तयानः पराभवम् ॥६॥

The king, accompanied by his four-fold army, returned to his own city, reflecting on his defeat with his intellect overcome by sorrow.
विमुच्य पथि यानानि देशे सुयवसोदके ।
संनिविष्टः शुभे रम्ये भूमिभागे यथेप्सितम् ।
हस्त्यश्वरथपादातं यथास्थानं न्यवेशयत् ॥७॥

7. vimucya pathi yānāni deśe suyavasodake ,

Having released the vehicles from the path, he settled the army in an auspicious, beautiful region, rich with good grass and water, as he desired. He then stationed the elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry in their respective places.
अथोपविष्टं राजानं पर्यङ्के ज्वलनप्रभे ।
उपप्लुतं यथा सोमं राहुणा रात्रिसंक्षये ।
उपगम्याब्रवीत्कर्णो दुर्योधनमिदं तदा ॥८॥

8. athopaviṣṭaṁ rājānaṁ paryaṅke jvalanaprabhe ,
upaplutaṁ yathā somaṁ rāhuṇā rātrisaṁkṣaye ,
upagamyābravītkarṇo duryodhanamidaṁ tadā.

Then Karṇa approached Duryodhana, who was seated on a couch shining like fire and who, at the end of the night, was eclipsed like the moon by Rāhu. Karṇa then spoke these words to the king (Duryodhana).
दिष्ट्या जीवसि गान्धारे दिष्ट्या नः संगमः पुनः ।
दिष्ट्या त्वया जिताश्चैव गन्धर्वाः कामरूपिणः ॥९॥
दिष्ट्या त्वया जिताश्चैव गन्धर्वाः कामरूपिणः ॥९॥
9. diṣṭyā jīvasi gāndhāre diṣṭyā naḥ saṁgamaḥ punaḥ ,
diṣṭyā tvayā jitāścaiva gandharvāḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ.

By good fortune, O son of Gandhārī, you are alive! By good fortune, we are reunited again! By good fortune, those shape-shifting Gandharvas have indeed been conquered by you!
दिष्ट्या समग्रान्पश्यामि भ्रातॄंस्ते कुरुनन्दन ।
विजिगीषून्रणान्मुक्तान्निर्जितारीन्महारथान् ॥१०॥

10. diṣṭyā samagrānpaśyāmi bhrātṝṁste kurunandana ,
vijigīṣūnraṇānmuktānnirjitārīnmahārathān.

By good fortune, O joy of the Kurus, I see all your brothers - eager for victory, released from battle, with their enemies vanquished, and as great chariot warriors.
अहं त्वभिद्रुतः सर्वैर्गन्धर्वैः पश्यतस्तव ।
नाशक्नुवं स्थापयितुं दीर्यमाणां स्ववाहिनीम् ॥११॥
नाशक्नुवं स्थापयितुं दीर्यमाणां स्ववाहिनीम् ॥११॥
11. ahaṁ tvabhidrutaḥ sarvairgandharvaiḥ paśyatastava ,
nāśaknuvaṁ sthāpayituṁ dīryamāṇāṁ svavāhinīm.

ahaṃ tu abhidrutaḥ sarvaiḥ gandharvaiḥ paśyataḥ
tava na aśaknuvaṃ sthāpayituṃ dīryamāṇāṃ svavāhinīm

Even as you watched, I was assailed by all the Gandharvas and was unable to prevent my own army from being shattered.
शरक्षताङ्गश्च भृशं व्यपयातोऽभिपीडितः ।
इदं त्वत्यद्भुतं मन्ये यद्युष्मानिह भारत ॥१२॥
इदं त्वत्यद्भुतं मन्ये यद्युष्मानिह भारत ॥१२॥
12. śarakṣatāṅgaśca bhṛśaṁ vyapayāto'bhipīḍitaḥ ,
idaṁ tvatyadbhutaṁ manye yadyuṣmāniha bhārata.

And I, severely wounded by arrows and greatly distressed, fled. But this, O Bhārata, I consider truly astonishing: that you all are here.
अरिष्टानक्षतांश्चापि सदारधनवाहनान् ।
विमुक्तान्संप्रपश्यामि तस्माद्युद्धादमानुषात् ॥१३॥
विमुक्तान्संप्रपश्यामि तस्माद्युद्धादमानुषात् ॥१३॥
13. ariṣṭānakṣatāṁścāpi sadāradhanavāhanān ,
vimuktānsaṁprapaśyāmi tasmādyuddhādamānuṣāt.

And I see you all, along with your wives, wealth, and conveyances, safe and uninjured, having been freed from that superhuman battle.
नैतस्य कर्ता लोकेऽस्मिन्पुमान्विद्येत भारत ।
यत्कृतं ते महाराज सह भ्रातृभिराहवे ॥१४॥

14. naitasya kartā loke'sminpumānvidyeta bhārata ,
yatkṛtaṁ te mahārāja saha bhrātṛbhirāhave.

na etasya kartā loke asmin pumān vidyeta bhārata
yat kṛtaṃ te mahārāja saha bhrātṛbhiḥ āhave

O Bhārata, no man in this world exists who could have accomplished this feat, which was performed by you, O great warrior, with your brothers in battle.
एवमुक्तस्तु कर्णेन राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा ।
उवाचावाक्शिरा राजन्बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा ॥१५॥

O King, when King Duryodhana was thus spoken to by Karṇa, he then spoke with a downcast head and a voice choked with tears.
