तस्मिन्विनिहते वीरे सैन्धवे सव्यसाचिना ।
मामका यदकुर्वन्त तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥१॥

1. Dhritarashtra said: "Sanjaya, please tell me what my sons (the Kauravas) did when that hero Saindhava (Jayadratha) was slain by Savyasachin (Arjuna)."
संजय उवाच ।
सैन्धवं निहतं दृष्ट्वा रणे पार्थेन मारिष ।
अमर्षवशमापन्नः कृपः शारद्वतस्तदा ॥२॥
2. saṁjaya uvāca ,
saindhavaṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā raṇe pārthena māriṣa ,
amarṣavaśamāpannaḥ kṛpaḥ śāradvatastadā.

2. Sanjaya said: "O respected one (Dhritarashtra), when Kripa, son of Śāradvat, saw Saindhava (Jayadratha) slain in battle by Pārtha (Arjuna), he became overwhelmed by indignation."
महता शरवर्षेण पाण्डवं समवाकिरत् ।
द्रौणिश्चाभ्यद्रवत्पार्थं रथमास्थाय फल्गुनम् ॥३॥
3. mahatā śaravarṣeṇa pāṇḍavaṁ samavākirat ,
drauṇiścābhyadravatpārthaṁ rathamāsthāya phalgunam.
3. mahatā śaravarṣeṇa pāṇḍavam samavākirat drauṇiḥ
ca abhyadravat pārtham ratham āsthāya phalgunam

3. He (Aśvatthāman) overwhelmed Arjuna with a great shower of arrows. And Droṇa's son, having mounted his chariot, attacked Arjuna (Phālguna).
तावेनं रथिनां श्रेष्ठौ रथाभ्यां रथसत्तमम् ।
उभावुभयतस्तीक्ष्णैर्विशिखैरभ्यवर्षताम् ॥४॥
4. tāvenaṁ rathināṁ śreṣṭhau rathābhyāṁ rathasattamam ,
ubhāvubhayatastīkṣṇairviśikhairabhyavarṣatām.
4. tau enam rathinām śreṣṭhau rathābhyām rathasattamam
ubhau ubhayataḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ viśikhaiḥ abhyavarṣatām
4. tau ubhau rathinām śreṣṭhau rathābhyām ubhayataḥ
enam rathasattamam tīkṣṇaiḥ viśikhaiḥ abhyavarṣatām
4. Those two (Aśvatthāman and another), both excellent charioteers, from their respective chariots and from both sides, showered that best of charioteers (Arjuna) with sharp arrows.
स तथा शरवर्षाभ्यां सुमहद्भ्यां महाभुजः ।
पीड्यमानः परामार्तिमगमद्रथिनां वरः ॥५॥
5. sa tathā śaravarṣābhyāṁ sumahadbhyāṁ mahābhujaḥ ,
pīḍyamānaḥ parāmārtimagamadrathināṁ varaḥ.
5. saḥ tathā śaravarṣābhyām sumahadbhyām mahābhujaḥ
pīḍyamānaḥ parām ārtim agamat rathinām varaḥ

5. Thus, the mighty-armed (Arjuna), the best among charioteers, being greatly afflicted by those two very heavy showers of arrows, experienced extreme distress.
सोऽजिघांसुर्गुरुं संख्ये गुरोस्तनयमेव च ।
चकाराचार्यकं तत्र कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ॥६॥
6. so'jighāṁsurguruṁ saṁkhye gurostanayameva ca ,
cakārācāryakaṁ tatra kuntīputro dhanaṁjayaḥ.
6. saḥ ajighāṃsuḥ gurum saṃkhye guroḥ tanayam eva ca
cakāra ācāryakam tatra kuntīputraḥ dhanañjayaḥ
6. saḥ kuntīputraḥ dhanañjayaḥ saṃkhye gurum guroḥ
tanayam eva ca ajighāṃsuḥ tatra ācāryakam cakāra
6. Therefore, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), the son of Kuntī, not wishing to kill his teacher (guru) or even his teacher's son in that battle, showed due respect (ācāryakam).
अस्त्रैरस्त्राणि संवार्य द्रौणेः शारद्वतस्य च ।
मन्दवेगानिषूंस्ताभ्यामजिघांसुरवासृजत् ॥७॥
7. astrairastrāṇi saṁvārya drauṇeḥ śāradvatasya ca ,
mandavegāniṣūṁstābhyāmajighāṁsuravāsṛjat.

ca mandavegān iṣūn tābhyām ajighāṃsuḥ avāsṛjat

7. Having warded off the weapons of Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman) and Śāradvata (Kṛpa), and not wishing to kill them, he released slow-moving arrows upon both of them.
ते नातिभृशमभ्यघ्नन्विशिखा जयचोदिताः ।
बहुत्वात्तु परामार्तिं शराणां तावगच्छताम् ॥८॥
8. te nātibhṛśamabhyaghnanviśikhā jayacoditāḥ ,
bahutvāttu parāmārtiṁ śarāṇāṁ tāvagacchatām.
8. te na atibhṛśam abhyaghhan viśikhāḥ jayacoditāḥ
bahutvāt tu paramārtim śarāṇām tau agacchatām
8. jayacoditāḥ te viśikhāḥ na atibhṛśam abhyaghhan,
tu bahutvāt śarāṇām paramārtim tau agacchatām
8. Those arrows, impelled by the desire for victory, did not strike too fiercely. But due to their great number, both of them (Drauṇi and Śāradvata) experienced great distress from the arrows.
अथ शारद्वतो राजन्कौन्तेयशरपीडितः ।
अवासीदद्रथोपस्थे मूर्च्छामभिजगाम ह ॥९॥
9. atha śāradvato rājankaunteyaśarapīḍitaḥ ,
avāsīdadrathopasthe mūrcchāmabhijagāma ha.
9. atha śāradvataḥ rājan kaunteyaśarapīḍitaḥ
avāsīdat rathopasthe mūrcchām abhijagāma ha

9. Then, O King, Śāradvata (Kṛpa), tormented by the arrows of Kunti's son (Arjuna), sank down in the chariot seat and indeed fell unconscious.
विह्वलं तमभिज्ञाय भर्तारं शरपीडितम् ।
हतोऽयमिति च ज्ञात्वा सारथिस्तमपावहत् ॥१०॥
10. vihvalaṁ tamabhijñāya bhartāraṁ śarapīḍitam ,
hato'yamiti ca jñātvā sārathistamapāvahat.
10. vihvalam tam abhijñāya bhartāram śarapīḍitam
hataḥ ayam iti ca jñātvā sārathiḥ tam apāvahat
10. sārathiḥ vihvalam śarapīḍitam tam bhartāram abhijñāya,
ayam hataḥ iti ca jñātvā,
tam apāvahat
10. Having recognized his agitated master, who was wounded by arrows, and having assumed "he is slain," the charioteer drove him away.
तस्मिन्सन्ने महाराज कृपे शारद्वते युधि ।
अश्वत्थामाप्यपायासीत्पाण्डवेयाद्रथान्तरम् ॥११॥
11. tasminsanne mahārāja kṛpe śāradvate yudhi ,
aśvatthāmāpyapāyāsītpāṇḍaveyādrathāntaram.
11. tasmin sanne mahārāja kṛpe śāradvate yudhi
aśvatthāmā api apāyāsīt pāṇḍaveyāt rathāntaram
11. maharāja yudhi śāradvate kṛpe tasmin sanne
aśvatthāmā api pāṇḍaveyāt rathāntaram apāyāsīt
11. O great king, when Kṛpa, the son of Śāradvat, was overcome in battle, Aśvatthāmā also retreated to another chariot from the son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna).
दृष्ट्वा शारद्वतं पार्थो मूर्छितं शरपीडितम् ।
रथ एव महेष्वासः कृपणं पर्यदेवयत् ॥१२॥
12. dṛṣṭvā śāradvataṁ pārtho mūrchitaṁ śarapīḍitam ,
ratha eva maheṣvāsaḥ kṛpaṇaṁ paryadevayat.

ratha eva maheṣvāsaḥ kṛpaṇam paryadevayat

12. Having seen the son of Śāradvat (Kṛpa) unconscious and wounded by arrows, Pārtha (Arjuna), the great archer, lamented pitifully while still in his chariot.
पश्यन्निदं महाप्राज्ञः क्षत्ता राजानमुक्तवान् ।
कुलान्तकरणे पापे जातमात्रे सुयोधने ॥१३॥
13. paśyannidaṁ mahāprājñaḥ kṣattā rājānamuktavān ,
kulāntakaraṇe pāpe jātamātre suyodhane.
13. paśyan idam mahāprājñaḥ kṣattā rājānam
uktavān kulāntakaraṇe pāpe jātamātre suyodhane
13. mahāprājñaḥ kṣattā idam paśyan rājānam

13. Seeing this, the very wise Vidura (kṣattā) spoke to the king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) (the words he had uttered) when the wicked Suyodhana, the destroyer of the family, was just born.
नीयतां परलोकाय साध्वयं कुलपांसनः ।
अस्माद्धि कुरुमुख्यानां महदुत्पत्स्यते भयम् ॥१४॥
14. nīyatāṁ paralokāya sādhvayaṁ kulapāṁsanaḥ ,
asmāddhi kurumukhyānāṁ mahadutpatsyate bhayam.
14. nīyatām paralokāya sādhu ayam kulapāṃsanaḥ
asmāt hi kurumukhyānām mahat utpatsyate bhayam
14. sādhu ayam kulapāṃsanaḥ paralokāya nīyatām hi
asmāt kurumukhyānām mahat bhayam utpatsyate
14. Let this disgrace of the family be surely sent to the next world (i.e., killed), for indeed, from him, a great danger will arise for the foremost among the Kurus.
तदिदं समनुप्राप्तं वचनं सत्यवादिनः ।
तत्कृते ह्यद्य पश्यामि शरतल्पगतं कृपम् ॥१५॥
15. tadidaṁ samanuprāptaṁ vacanaṁ satyavādinaḥ ,
tatkṛte hyadya paśyāmi śaratalpagataṁ kṛpam.
15. tat idam samanuprāptam vacanam satyavādinaḥ
tat kṛte hi adya paśyāmi śaratālpagatam kṛpam
15. satyavādinaḥ vacanam tat idam samanuprāptam
hi adya tat kṛte kṛpam śaratālpagatam paśyāmi
15. This very prophecy of the truth-speaker has now come true. Indeed, because of this, today I see Kṛpa lying on a bed of arrows.
धिगस्तु क्षात्रमाचारं धिगस्तु बलपौरुषम् ।
को हि ब्राह्मणमाचार्यमभिद्रुह्येत मादृशः ॥१६॥
16. dhigastu kṣātramācāraṁ dhigastu balapauruṣam ,
ko hi brāhmaṇamācāryamabhidruhyeta mādṛśaḥ.
16. dhik astu kṣātram ācāram dhik astu bala-pauruṣam
kaḥ hi brāhmaṇam ācāryam abhidruhyeta mādṛśaḥ
16. kṣātram ācāram dhik astu balapauruṣam dhik astu
hi mādṛśaḥ kaḥ brāhmaṇam ācāryam abhidruhyeta
16. Shame upon this warrior-like conduct! Shame upon (my) strength and valor! For who, indeed, like me, would offend a Brahmin preceptor?
ऋषिपुत्रो ममाचार्यो द्रोणस्य दयितः सखा ।
एष शेते रथोपस्थे मद्बाणैरभिपीडितः ॥१७॥
17. ṛṣiputro mamācāryo droṇasya dayitaḥ sakhā ,
eṣa śete rathopasthe madbāṇairabhipīḍitaḥ.
17. ṛṣiputraḥ mama ācāryaḥ droṇasya dayitaḥ sakhā
eṣaḥ śete rathopasthe mat bāṇaiḥ abhipīḍitaḥ
17. eṣaḥ ṛṣiputraḥ mama ācāryaḥ droṇasya dayitaḥ
sakhā mat bāṇaiḥ abhipīḍitaḥ rathopasthe śete
17. He, the son of a sage (ṛṣi), my preceptor, and the beloved friend of Droṇa, lies here on the chariot's platform, tormented by my arrows.
अकामयानेन मया विशिखैरर्दितो भृशम् ।
अवासीदद्रथोपस्थे प्राणान्पीडयतीव मे ॥१८॥
18. akāmayānena mayā viśikhairardito bhṛśam ,
avāsīdadrathopasthe prāṇānpīḍayatīva me.
18. akāmayānena mayā viśikhaiḥ arditaḥ bhṛśam
avāsīdat rathopasthe prāṇān pīḍayati iva me
18. akāmayānena mayā viśikhaiḥ bhṛśam arditaḥ
rathopasthe avāsīdat me prāṇān pīḍayati iva
18. By me, though unwilling (akāmayānena), he was greatly afflicted by arrows. He sank down on the chariot's platform, as if tormenting my very life (prāṇān).
शरार्दितेन हि मया प्रेक्षणीयो महाद्युतिः ।
प्रत्यस्तो बहुभिर्बाणैर्दशधर्मगतेन वै ॥१९॥
19. śarārditena hi mayā prekṣaṇīyo mahādyutiḥ ,
pratyasto bahubhirbāṇairdaśadharmagatena vai.
19. śarārditena hi mayā prekṣaṇīyaḥ mahādyutiḥ
pratyastaḥ bahubhiḥ bāṇaiḥ daśadharmagatena vai
19. hi vai śarārditena daśadharmagatena mayā bahubhiḥ
bāṇaiḥ pratyastaḥ mahādyutiḥ prekṣaṇīyaḥ
19. Indeed, by me, who is afflicted by arrows and has embraced the ten virtues (dharma), my glorious self, struck down by many arrows, is to be observed.
शोचयत्येष निपतन्भूयः पुत्रवधाद्धि माम् ।
कृपणं स्वरथे सन्नं पश्य कृष्ण यथा गतम् ॥२०॥
20. śocayatyeṣa nipatanbhūyaḥ putravadhāddhi mām ,
kṛpaṇaṁ svarathe sannaṁ paśya kṛṣṇa yathā gatam.
20. śocayati eṣa nipatān bhūyaḥ putravadhāt hi mām
kṛpaṇam svarathe sannam paśya kṛṣṇa yathā gatam
20. hi eṣa nipatān putravadhāt bhūyaḥ mām śocayati
kṛṣṇa paśya yathā kṛpaṇam svarathe sannam gatam
20. Indeed, this one falling causes me more grief than the slaying of my son. O Krishna, behold how he, pitiable and collapsed in his own chariot, has departed.
उपाकृत्य तु वै विद्यामाचार्येभ्यो नरर्षभाः ।
प्रयच्छन्तीह ये कामान्देवत्वमुपयान्ति ते ॥२१॥
21. upākṛtya tu vai vidyāmācāryebhyo nararṣabhāḥ ,
prayacchantīha ye kāmāndevatvamupayānti te.
21. upākṛtya tu vai vidyām ācāryebhyaḥ nararṣabhāḥ
prayacchanti iha ye kāmān devatvam upayānti te
21. nararṣabhāḥ tu vai ye ācāryebhyaḥ vidyām upākṛtya
iha kāmān prayacchanti te devatvam upayānti
21. O best among men, indeed, those who, having thoroughly acquired knowledge (vidyā) from their teachers, and who in this world fulfill desires, they attain divinity.
ये तु विद्यामुपादाय गुरुभ्यः पुरुषाधमाः ।
घ्नन्ति तानेव दुर्वृत्तास्ते वै निरयगामिनः ॥२२॥
22. ye tu vidyāmupādāya gurubhyaḥ puruṣādhamāḥ ,
ghnanti tāneva durvṛttāste vai nirayagāminaḥ.
22. ye tu vidyām upādāya gurubhyaḥ puruṣādhamāḥ
ghnanti tān eva durvṛttāḥ te vai nirayagāminaḥ
22. tu ye puruṣādhamāḥ durvṛttāḥ gurubhyaḥ vidyām upādāya tān eva ghnanti,
te vai nirayagāminaḥ
22. But those wicked men, the vilest of persons, who, having acquired knowledge (vidyā) from their teachers (gurus), only harm those very teachers, they indeed go to hell.
तदिदं नरकायाद्य कृतं कर्म मया ध्रुवम् ।
आचार्यं शरवर्षेण रथे सादयता कृपम् ॥२३॥
23. tadidaṁ narakāyādya kṛtaṁ karma mayā dhruvam ,
ācāryaṁ śaravarṣeṇa rathe sādayatā kṛpam.
23. tat idam narakāya adya kṛtam karma mayā dhruvam
ācāryam śaravarṣeṇa rathe sādayatā kṛpam
23. mayā adya śaravarṣeṇa ācāryam kṛpam rathe
sādayatā kṛtam idam tat karma dhruvam narakāya
23. This very deed, which I have certainly performed today by causing preceptor Kṛpa to fall from his chariot with a shower of arrows, is destined for hell.
यत्तत्पूर्वमुपाकुर्वन्नस्त्रं मामब्रवीत्कृपः ।
न कथंचन कौरव्य प्रहर्तव्यं गुराविति ॥२४॥
24. yattatpūrvamupākurvannastraṁ māmabravītkṛpaḥ ,
na kathaṁcana kauravya prahartavyaṁ gurāviti.
24. yat tat pūrvam upākurvan astram mām abravīt kṛpaḥ
na kathaṃcana kauravya prahartavyam gurau iti
24. tat astram upākurvan yat pūrvam kṛpaḥ mām abravīt – “kauravya,
gurau na kathaṃcana prahartavyam” iti
24. Previously, while instructing me in the use of missiles (astra), Kṛpa himself told me, 'O descendant of Kuru, a preceptor (guru) must never be assailed under any circumstances.'
तदिदं वचनं साधोराचार्यस्य महात्मनः ।
नानुष्ठितं तमेवाजौ विशिखैरभिवर्षता ॥२५॥
25. tadidaṁ vacanaṁ sādhorācāryasya mahātmanaḥ ,
nānuṣṭhitaṁ tamevājau viśikhairabhivarṣatā.
25. tat idam vacanam sādhoḥ ācāryasya mahātmanaḥ na
anuṣṭhitam tam eva ājau viśikhaiḥ abhivarṣatā
25. ājau viśikhaiḥ tameva abhivarṣatā [mayā] sādhoḥ
mahātmanaḥ ācāryasya idam tat vacanam na anuṣṭhitam
25. This very instruction of the virtuous, great-souled preceptor was not followed by me, who am showering him alone with arrows (viśikha) in battle.
नमस्तस्मै सुपूज्याय गौतमायापलायिने ।
धिगस्तु मम वार्ष्णेय यो ह्यस्मै प्रहराम्यहम् ॥२६॥
26. namastasmai supūjyāya gautamāyāpalāyine ,
dhigastu mama vārṣṇeya yo hyasmai praharāmyaham.
26. namaḥ tasmai supūjyāya gautamāya apalāyine dhik
astu mama vārṣṇeya yaḥ hi asmai praharāmi aham
26. supūjyāya apalāyine gautamāya tasmai namaḥ astu.
vārṣṇeya,
yaḥ aham hi asmai praharāmi,
mama dhik astu.
26. Obeisance to that greatly revered Gautama, the one who does not retreat. Shame upon me, O Vārṣṇeya, for I am indeed striking him!
तथा विलपमाने तु सव्यसाचिनि तं प्रति ।
सैन्धवं निहतं दृष्ट्वा राधेयः समुपाद्रवत् ॥२७॥
27. tathā vilapamāne tu savyasācini taṁ prati ,
saindhavaṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā rādheyaḥ samupādravat.
27. tathā vilapamāne tu savyasācini tam prati
saindhavam nihatam dṛṣṭvā rādheyaḥ samupādravat
27. savyasācini tam prati tathā vilapamāne tu,
saindhavam nihatam dṛṣṭvā,
rādheyaḥ samupādravat.
27. While Arjuna (savyasācin) was thus lamenting concerning him, Karna (Rādheya), having seen the king of Sindhu (Saindhava) slain, rushed forward.
उपायान्तं तु राधेयं दृष्ट्वा पार्थो महारथः ।
प्रहसन्देवकीपुत्रमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२८॥
28. upāyāntaṁ tu rādheyaṁ dṛṣṭvā pārtho mahārathaḥ ,
prahasandevakīputramidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
28. upāyāntam tu rādheyam dṛṣṭvā pārthaḥ mahārathaḥ
prahasan devakīputram idam vacanam abravīt
28. tu mahārathaḥ pārthaḥ upāyāntam rādheyam dṛṣṭvā,
prahasan idam vacanam devakīputram abravīt.
28. But the great warrior (mahāratha) Arjuna (Pārtha), having seen Karna (Rādheya) approaching, smiling, spoke these words to Krishna, the son of Devaki (Devakīputra).
एष प्रयात्याधिरथिः सात्यकेः स्यन्दनं प्रति ।
न मृष्यति हतं नूनं भूरिश्रवसमाहवे ॥२९॥
29. eṣa prayātyādhirathiḥ sātyakeḥ syandanaṁ prati ,
na mṛṣyati hataṁ nūnaṁ bhūriśravasamāhave.
29. eṣa prayāti ādhīrathiḥ sātyakeḥ syandanam prati
na mṛṣyati hatam nūnam bhūriśravasam āhave
29. eṣaḥ ādhīrathiḥ sātyakeḥ syandanam prati prayāti.
nūnam āhave hatam bhūriśravasam na mṛṣyati.
29. This son of Adhiratha (Ādhirathi) is going towards Satyaki's chariot. Surely, he does not tolerate Bhurishravas having been killed in battle.
यत्र यात्येष तत्र त्वं चोदयाश्वाञ्जनार्दन ।
मा सोमदत्तेः पदवीं गमयेत्सात्यकिं वृषः ॥३०॥
30. yatra yātyeṣa tatra tvaṁ codayāśvāñjanārdana ,
mā somadatteḥ padavīṁ gamayetsātyakiṁ vṛṣaḥ.
30. yatra yāti eṣa tatra tvam codaya aśvān janārdana
mā somadatteḥ padavīm gamayet sātyakim vṛṣaḥ
30. janārdana,
eṣa yatra yāti,
tatra tvam aśvān codaya.
vṛṣaḥ sātyakim somadatteḥ padavīm mā gamayet.
30. O Janardana, wherever he (Karna) goes, you drive the horses there. May that bull-like warrior (vṛṣa) not lead Satyaki to the fate of Somadatta's son.
एवमुक्तो महाबाहुः केशवः सव्यसाचिना ।
प्रत्युवाच महातेजाः कालयुक्तमिदं वचः ॥३१॥
31. evamukto mahābāhuḥ keśavaḥ savyasācinā ,
pratyuvāca mahātejāḥ kālayuktamidaṁ vacaḥ.

31. Thus addressed by Arjuna (savyasācin), the mighty-armed (mahābāhu) Keśava, who was greatly effulgent (mahātejāḥ), replied with these timely words.
अलमेष महाबाहुः कर्णायैको हि पाण्डव ।
किं पुनर्द्रौपदेयाभ्यां सहितः सात्वतर्षभः ॥३२॥
32. alameṣa mahābāhuḥ karṇāyaiko hi pāṇḍava ,
kiṁ punardraupadeyābhyāṁ sahitaḥ sātvatarṣabhaḥ.
32. alam eṣaḥ mahābāhuḥ karṇāya ekaḥ hi pāṇḍava kim
punaḥ draupadeyābhyām sahitaḥ sātvatarṣabhaḥ
32. eṣaḥ mahābāhuḥ pāṇḍava ekaḥ hi karṇāya alam.
kim punaḥ draupadeyābhyām sahitaḥ sātvatarṣabhaḥ
32. This mighty-armed (mahābāhu) son of Pāṇḍu (pāṇḍava) alone is indeed sufficient for Karṇa. How much more so then, when he is accompanied by the two sons of Draupadī, O best of the Sātvatas (sātvatarṣabha)?
न च तावत्क्षमः पार्थ कर्णेन तव संगरः ।
प्रज्वलन्ती महोल्केव तिष्ठत्यस्य हि वासवी ।
त्वदर्थं पूज्यमानैषा रक्ष्यते परवीरहन् ॥३३॥
33. na ca tāvatkṣamaḥ pārtha karṇena tava saṁgaraḥ ,
prajvalantī maholkeva tiṣṭhatyasya hi vāsavī ,
tvadarthaṁ pūjyamānaiṣā rakṣyate paravīrahan.
33. na ca tāvat kṣamaḥ pārtha karṇena
tava saṅgaraḥ prajvalantī maholkā iva
tiṣṭhati asya hi vāsavī tvadartham
pūjyamānā eṣā rakṣyate paravīrahan
33. ca pārtha,
tāvat tava karṇena saṅgaraḥ na kṣamaḥ.
hi asya vāsavī maholkā iva prajvalantī tiṣṭhati.
paravīrahan,
eṣā tvadartham pūjyamānā rakṣyate.
33. And for now, O Pārtha (pārtha), your battle with Karṇa is not suitable. For indeed, his Vāsavī (Indra's dart) remains, blazing like a great meteor. This (Vāsavī), O slayer of enemy heroes (paravīrahan), is being worshipped and protected for your sake.
अतः कर्णः प्रयात्वत्र सात्वतस्य यथा तथा ।
अहं ज्ञास्यामि कौरव्य कालमस्य दुरात्मनः ॥३४॥
34. ataḥ karṇaḥ prayātvatra sātvatasya yathā tathā ,
ahaṁ jñāsyāmi kauravya kālamasya durātmanaḥ.
34. ataḥ karṇaḥ prayātu atra sātvatasya yathā tathā
aham jñāsyāmi kauravya kālam asya durātmanaḥ
34. ataḥ sātvatasya atra karṇaḥ yathā tathā prayātu.
kauravya,

34. Therefore, let Karṇa proceed here against the Sātvata (Krishna) however he wishes. O descendant of Kuru (kauravya), I myself shall ascertain the opportune moment (kāla) for this wicked (durātman) one.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
योऽसौ कर्णेन वीरेण वार्ष्णेयस्य समागमः ।
हते तु भूरिश्रवसि सैन्धवे च निपातिते ॥३५॥
35. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
yo'sau karṇena vīreṇa vārṣṇeyasya samāgamaḥ ,
hate tu bhūriśravasi saindhave ca nipātite.

35. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "What was that encounter between the heroic Karṇa and Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa) that occurred after Bhūriśravas had been killed and Saindhava (Jayadratha) struck down?"
सात्यकिश्चापि विरथः कं समारूढवान्रथम् ।
चक्ररक्षौ च पाञ्चाल्यौ तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥३६॥
36. sātyakiścāpi virathaḥ kaṁ samārūḍhavānratham ,
cakrarakṣau ca pāñcālyau tanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.
36. Sātyakiḥ ca api virathaḥ kam samārūḍhavān ratham
cakrarakṣau ca Pāñcālyau tat mama ācakṣva Sañjaya
36. Sātyakiḥ ca api virathaḥ san kam ratham samārūḍhavān? Cakrarakṣau ca Pāñcālyau (kau āstām)? Tat mama ācakṣva,
Sañjaya.
36. "And on whose chariot did Sātyaki, whose own chariot was destroyed, mount? And who were the two Pāñcālya chariot-wheel protectors? Tell me all this, Sañjaya."
संजय उवाच ।
हन्त ते वर्णयिष्यामि यथावृत्तं महारणे ।
शुश्रूषस्व स्थिरो भूत्वा दुराचरितमात्मनः ॥३७॥
37. saṁjaya uvāca ,
hanta te varṇayiṣyāmi yathāvṛttaṁ mahāraṇe ,
śuśrūṣasva sthiro bhūtvā durācaritamātmanaḥ.

37. Sañjayaḥ uvāca Hanta,
te mahāraṇe yathāvṛttam varṇayiṣyāmi Sthiraḥ bhūtvā ātmanaḥ durācaritam śuśrūṣasva
37. Sañjaya said: "Well then, I will describe to you exactly what happened in the great battle. Listen attentively, becoming firm (in your resolve), to this ill-deed (committed) by your own self (ātman)."
पूर्वमेव हि कृष्णस्य मनोगतमिदं प्रभो ।
विजेतव्यो यथा वीरः सात्यकिर्यूपकेतुना ॥३८॥
38. pūrvameva hi kṛṣṇasya manogatamidaṁ prabho ,
vijetavyo yathā vīraḥ sātyakiryūpaketunā.

38. Prabho,
pūrvam eva hi idam Kṛṣṇasya manogatam (āsīt),
yathā vīraḥ Sātyakiḥ Yūpaketunā vijetavyaḥ (syāt)
38. Indeed, O Lord, this was already in Kṛṣṇa's mind: how the heroic Sātyaki should be conquered by Yūpaketu (Karṇa).
अतीतानागतं राजन्स हि वेत्ति जनार्दनः ।
अतः सूतं समाहूय दारुकं संदिदेश ह ।
रथो मे युज्यतां काल्यमिति राजन्महाबलः ॥३९॥
39. atītānāgataṁ rājansa hi vetti janārdanaḥ ,
ataḥ sūtaṁ samāhūya dārukaṁ saṁdideśa ha ,
ratho me yujyatāṁ kālyamiti rājanmahābalaḥ.

39. O King, Janardana (Krishna) indeed knows the past and the future. Therefore, the mighty Krishna, having summoned his charioteer Daruka, commanded, 'My chariot should be yoked early in the morning!' O King (Dhritarashtra).
न हि देवा न गन्धर्वा न यक्षोरगराक्षसाः ।
मानवा वा विजेतारः कृष्णयोः सन्ति केचन ॥४०॥
40. na hi devā na gandharvā na yakṣoragarākṣasāḥ ,
mānavā vā vijetāraḥ kṛṣṇayoḥ santi kecana.
40. na hi devāḥ na gandharvāḥ na yakṣoragarākṣasāḥ
mānavāḥ vā vijetāraḥ kṛṣṇayoḥ santi kecana
40. hi devāḥ na gandharvāḥ na yakṣoragarākṣasāḥ
na vā mānavāḥ kecana kṛṣṇayoḥ vijetāraḥ santi
40. Indeed, there are no gods, nor Gandharvas, nor Yakshas, Uragas, or Rakshasas, nor any humans who can be conquerors of the two Krishnas.
पितामहपुरोगाश्च देवाः सिद्धाश्च तं विदुः ।
तयोः प्रभावमतुलं शृणु युद्धं च तद्यथा ॥४१॥
41. pitāmahapurogāśca devāḥ siddhāśca taṁ viduḥ ,
tayoḥ prabhāvamatulaṁ śṛṇu yuddhaṁ ca tadyathā.
41. pitāmaha-purōgāḥ ca devāḥ siddhāḥ ca tam viduḥ
tayoḥ prabhāvam atulam śṛṇu yuddham ca tat yathā
41. pitāmahapurōgāḥ ca devāḥ ca siddhāḥ tam viduḥ

41. And even the gods, with Brahma at their head, and the Siddhas (accomplished beings) know him (Krishna). Hear from me their unequaled power and how that battle unfolded.
सात्यकिं विरथं दृष्ट्वा कर्णं चाभ्युद्यतायुधम् ।
दध्मौ शङ्खं महावेगमार्षभेणाथ माधवः ॥४२॥
42. sātyakiṁ virathaṁ dṛṣṭvā karṇaṁ cābhyudyatāyudham ,
dadhmau śaṅkhaṁ mahāvegamārṣabheṇātha mādhavaḥ.

dadhmau śaṅkham mahāvegam ārṣabheṇa atha mādhavaḥ

42. Then, Madhava (Krishna), having seen Satyaki dismounted from his chariot and Karna with his weapon raised, blew his conch shell with a mighty, bull-like sound.
दारुकोऽवेत्य संदेशं श्रुत्वा शङ्खस्य च स्वनम् ।
रथमन्वानयत्तस्मै सुपर्णोच्छ्रितकेतनम् ॥४३॥
43. dāruko'vetya saṁdeśaṁ śrutvā śaṅkhasya ca svanam ,
rathamanvānayattasmai suparṇocchritaketanam.
43. dārukaḥ avetya saṃdeśam śrutvā śaṅkhasya ca svanam
ratham anvānayat tasmai suparṇocchritaketanam

43. Having understood the message and heard the conch's sound, Daruka brought him the chariot, which bore a banner with Garuda (Suparṇa) raised high.
स केशवस्यानुमते रथं दारुकसंयुतम् ।
आरुरोह शिनेः पौत्रो ज्वलनादित्यसंनिभम् ॥४४॥
44. sa keśavasyānumate rathaṁ dārukasaṁyutam ,
āruroha śineḥ pautro jvalanādityasaṁnibham.

44. With Keshava's (Krishna's) permission, he, Shini's grandson (Satyaki), ascended the chariot, which was attended by Daruka and shone like the blazing sun.
कामगैः सैन्यसुग्रीवमेघपुष्पबलाहकैः ।
हयोदग्रैर्महावेगैर्हेमभाण्डविभूषितैः ॥४५॥
45. kāmagaiḥ sainyasugrīvameghapuṣpabalāhakaiḥ ,
hayodagrairmahāvegairhemabhāṇḍavibhūṣitaiḥ.

45. By (horses named) Sainya, Sugrīva, Meghapuṣpa, and Balāhaka, which were excellent horses, moving at will, of great speed, and adorned with golden trappings.
युक्तं समारुह्य च तं विमानप्रतिमं रथम् ।
अभ्यद्रवत राधेयं प्रवपन्सायकान्बहून् ॥४६॥
46. yuktaṁ samāruhya ca taṁ vimānapratimaṁ ratham ,
abhyadravata rādheyaṁ pravapansāyakānbahūn.

46. And having ascended that yoked chariot, which resembled an aerial car (vimāna), he rushed towards Radheya (Karna), showering many arrows.
चक्ररक्षावपि तदा युधामन्यूत्तमौजसौ ।
धनंजयरथं हित्वा राधेयं प्रत्युदीययुः ॥४७॥
47. cakrarakṣāvapi tadā yudhāmanyūttamaujasau ,
dhanaṁjayarathaṁ hitvā rādheyaṁ pratyudīyayuḥ.
47. cakrarakṣau api tadā yudhāmanyu uttamaujasau
dhanañjayaratham hitvā rādheyam pratiudīyayuḥ

47. Then, Yudhamanyu and Uttamaujas, who were the protectors of Arjuna's chariot wheels, abandoned Arjuna's chariot and advanced towards Karna.
राधेयोऽपि महाराज शरवर्षं समुत्सृजन् ।
अभ्यद्रवत्सुसंक्रुद्धो रणे शैनेयमच्युतम् ॥४८॥
48. rādheyo'pi mahārāja śaravarṣaṁ samutsṛjan ,
abhyadravatsusaṁkruddho raṇe śaineyamacyutam.
48. rādheyaḥ api mahārāja śaravarṣam samutsṛjan abhi
adravat susaṃkruddhaḥ raṇe śaineyam acyutam

48. O great king, Karna also, intensely enraged, showering a rain of arrows, rushed towards the unwavering son of Śini (Śaineya) in battle.
नैव दैवं न गान्धर्वं नासुरोरगराक्षसम् ।
तादृशं भुवि वा युद्धं दिवि वा श्रुतमित्युत ॥४९॥
49. naiva daivaṁ na gāndharvaṁ nāsuroragarākṣasam ,
tādṛśaṁ bhuvi vā yuddhaṁ divi vā śrutamityuta.
49. na eva daivam na gāndharvam na asuroragarākṣasam
tādṛśam bhuvi vā yuddham divi vā śrutam iti uta

49. Never before has such a battle, be it divine, of Gandharvas, or of Asuras, Nāgas, or Rākṣasas, been heard of, either on earth or in heaven.
उपारमत तत्सैन्यं सरथाश्वनरद्विपम् ।
तयोर्दृष्ट्वा महाराज कर्म संमूढचेतनम् ॥५०॥
50. upāramata tatsainyaṁ sarathāśvanaradvipam ,
tayordṛṣṭvā mahārāja karma saṁmūḍhacetanam.

50. O great king, having witnessed the actions (karma) of those two warriors, that army - comprising chariots, horses, men, and elephants - stopped, its consciousness bewildered.
सर्वे च समपश्यन्त तद्युद्धमतिमानुषम् ।
तयोर्नृवरयो राजन्सारथ्यं दारुकस्य च ॥५१॥
51. sarve ca samapaśyanta tadyuddhamatimānuṣam ,
tayornṛvarayo rājansārathyaṁ dārukasya ca.
51. sarve ca samapaśyanta tat yuddham atimānuṣam
tayoḥ nṛvarayoḥ rājan sārathyam dārukasya ca
51. rājan sarve ca tayoḥ nṛvarayoḥ tat atimānuṣam

51. O King, everyone watched that superhuman battle of those two best of men, and they also observed Dāruka's charioteering.
गतप्रत्यागतावृत्तैर्मण्डलैः संनिवर्तनैः ।
सारथेस्तु रथस्थस्य काश्यपेयस्य विस्मिताः ॥५२॥
52. gatapratyāgatāvṛttairmaṇḍalaiḥ saṁnivartanaiḥ ,
sārathestu rathasthasya kāśyapeyasya vismitāḥ.

sāratheḥ tu rathasthasya kāśyapeyasya vismitāḥ

52. They were astonished by the charioteer Kaśyapeya, who, while seated in his chariot, performed repeated advancing and retreating movements, circular turns, and various other maneuvers.
नभस्तलगताश्चैव देवगन्धर्वदानवाः ।
अतीवावहिता द्रष्टुं कर्णशैनेययो रणम् ॥५३॥
53. nabhastalagatāścaiva devagandharvadānavāḥ ,
atīvāvahitā draṣṭuṁ karṇaśaineyayo raṇam.

53. And indeed, the gods, gandharvas, and dānavas, positioned in the sky, were extremely attentive to witness the battle between Karṇa and Śaineya.
मित्रार्थे तौ पराक्रान्तौ स्पर्धिनौ शुष्मिणौ रणे ।
कर्णश्चामरसंकाशो युयुधानश्च सात्यकिः ॥५४॥
54. mitrārthe tau parākrāntau spardhinau śuṣmiṇau raṇe ,
karṇaścāmarasaṁkāśo yuyudhānaśca sātyakiḥ.

54. For the sake of a friend, those two - Karṇa, who was like an immortal, and Yuyudhāna (also known as Sātyaki) - were valorous, competitive, and spirited in battle.
अन्योन्यं तौ महाराज शरवर्षैरवर्षताम् ।
प्रममाथ शिनेः पौत्रं कर्णः सायकवृष्टिभिः ॥५५॥
55. anyonyaṁ tau mahārāja śaravarṣairavarṣatām ,
pramamātha śineḥ pautraṁ karṇaḥ sāyakavṛṣṭibhiḥ.

55. O great king, they both showered each other with barrages of arrows. Karṇa then struck down Śini's grandson (Sātyaki) with his own volleys of arrows.
अमृष्यमाणो निधनं कौरव्यजलसंधयोः ।
कर्णः शोकसमाविष्टो महोरग इव श्वसन् ॥५६॥
56. amṛṣyamāṇo nidhanaṁ kauravyajalasaṁdhayoḥ ,
karṇaḥ śokasamāviṣṭo mahoraga iva śvasan.

56. Karṇa, unable to endure the death of Kauravya and Jalasandha, was overcome by sorrow, hissing like a great serpent (mahoraga).
स शैनेयं रणे क्रुद्धः प्रदहन्निव चक्षुषा ।
अभ्यद्रवत वेगेन पुनः पुनररिंदमः ॥५७॥
57. sa śaineyaṁ raṇe kruddhaḥ pradahanniva cakṣuṣā ,
abhyadravata vegena punaḥ punarariṁdamaḥ.

57. Enraged in battle, Karṇa, the destroyer of foes (arindama), rushed towards Śini's grandson (Śaineya) with great speed, as if burning him with his gaze, again and again.
तं तु संप्रेक्ष्य संक्रुद्धं सात्यकिः प्रत्यविध्यत ।
महता शरवर्षेण गजः प्रतिगजं यथा ॥५८॥
58. taṁ tu saṁprekṣya saṁkruddhaṁ sātyakiḥ pratyavidhyata ,
mahatā śaravarṣeṇa gajaḥ pratigajaṁ yathā.

58. But Sātyaki, perceiving him to be greatly enraged, struck him back with a massive shower of arrows, just as an elephant (gaja) might confront an opposing elephant.
तौ समेत्य नरव्याघ्रौ व्याघ्राविव तरस्विनौ ।

59. Having come together, those two most valiant men, as powerful as tigers, inflicted wounds upon each other in battle with their unequaled prowess.

बिभेद सर्वगात्रेषु पुनः पुनररिंदमः ॥६०॥
60. tataḥ karṇaṁ śineḥ pautraḥ sarvapāraśavaiḥ śaraiḥ ,

60. Then, the grandson of Shini, the subduer of enemies, pierced Karna again and again in all his limbs with all his iron arrows.
सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन रथनीडादपाहरत् ।
अश्वांश्च चतुरः श्वेतान्निजघ्ने निशितैः शरैः ॥६१॥
61. sārathiṁ cāsya bhallena rathanīḍādapāharat ,
aśvāṁśca caturaḥ śvetānnijaghne niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ.

61. And with a javelin, he removed his charioteer from the chariot-seat. He also struck down his four white horses with sharp arrows.
छित्त्वा ध्वजं शतेनैव शतधा पुरुषर्षभः ।
चकार विरथं कर्णं तव पुत्रस्य पश्यतः ॥६२॥
62. chittvā dhvajaṁ śatenaiva śatadhā puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
cakāra virathaṁ karṇaṁ tava putrasya paśyataḥ.
62. chittvā dhvajam śatena eva śatadhā puruṣarṣabhaḥ

62. That best among men, having cut down the banner into a hundred pieces with just a hundred (arrows), rendered Karna charioless, while your son (Duryodhana) watched.
ततो विमनसो राजंस्तावकाः पुरुषर्षभाः ।
वृषसेनः कर्णसुतः शल्यो मद्राधिपस्तथा ॥६३॥
63. tato vimanaso rājaṁstāvakāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
vṛṣasenaḥ karṇasutaḥ śalyo madrādhipastathā.

63. Then, O King, your foremost warriors - Vrishasena, Karna's son; Shalya, the king of the Madras; and similarly (Droṇa's son, mentioned in the next verse) - became disheartened.
द्रोणपुत्रश्च शैनेयं सर्वतः पर्यवारयन् ।
ततः पर्याकुलं सर्वं न प्राज्ञायत किंचन ॥६४॥
64. droṇaputraśca śaineyaṁ sarvataḥ paryavārayan ,
tataḥ paryākulaṁ sarvaṁ na prājñāyata kiṁcana.

64. And Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman), [along with the others], disheartened, surrounded Shaineya (Satyaki) from all sides. After that, everything became utterly chaotic, and nothing at all could be discerned.
तथा सात्यकिना वीरे विरथे सूतजे कृते ।
हाहाकारस्ततो राजन्सर्वसैन्येषु चाभवत् ॥६५॥
65. tathā sātyakinā vīre virathe sūtaje kṛte ,
hāhākārastato rājansarvasainyeṣu cābhavat.

65. And thus, O King, when the valiant son of Sūta (Karna) was rendered chariotless by Satyaki, a cry of lamentation arose among all the armies.
कर्णोऽपि विह्वलो राजन्सात्वतेनार्दितः शरैः ।
दुर्योधनरथं राजन्नारुरोह विनिःश्वसन् ॥६६॥
66. karṇo'pi vihvalo rājansātvatenārditaḥ śaraiḥ ,
duryodhanarathaṁ rājannāruroha viniḥśvasan.

66. Karna, too, O King, bewildered and tormented by Satyaki's arrows, mounted Duryodhana's chariot, sighing deeply.
मानयंस्तव पुत्रस्य बाल्यात्प्रभृति सौहृदम् ।
कृतां राज्यप्रदानेन प्रतिज्ञां परिपालयन् ॥६७॥
67. mānayaṁstava putrasya bālyātprabhṛti sauhṛdam ,
kṛtāṁ rājyapradānena pratijñāṁ paripālayan.

67. Respecting the friendship (sauhṛdam) of your son (putra) from childhood, and upholding the promise (pratijñā) made by granting the kingdom.
तथा तु विरथे कर्णे पुत्रान्वै तव पार्थिव ।
दुःशासनमुखाञ्शूरान्नावधीत्सात्यकिर्वशी ॥६८॥
68. tathā tu virathe karṇe putrānvai tava pārthiva ,
duḥśāsanamukhāñśūrānnāvadhītsātyakirvaśī.

68. But, O King (pārthiva), even when Karṇa was chariotless, the self-controlled (vaśī) Satyaki (Sātyaki) did not kill your brave (śūra) sons (putra), beginning with Duḥśāsana.
रक्षन्प्रतिज्ञां च पुनर्भीमसेनकृतां पुरा ।
विरथान्विह्वलांश्चक्रे न तु प्राणैर्व्ययोजयत् ॥६९॥
69. rakṣanpratijñāṁ ca punarbhīmasenakṛtāṁ purā ,
virathānvihvalāṁścakre na tu prāṇairvyayojayat.

69. And fulfilling (rakṣan) the promise (pratijñā) previously (purā) made by Bhīmasena, he rendered them chariotless (viratha) and bewildered (vihvala), but he did not deprive them of their lives (prāṇa).
भीमसेनेन तु वधः पुत्राणां ते प्रतिश्रुतः ।
पुनर्द्यूते च पार्थेन वधः कर्णस्य संश्रुतः ॥७०॥
70. bhīmasenena tu vadhaḥ putrāṇāṁ te pratiśrutaḥ ,
punardyūte ca pārthena vadhaḥ karṇasya saṁśrutaḥ.

70. Indeed, the slaying of your sons (putra) was promised (pratiśruta) by Bhīmasena. And again, in the gambling game (dyūta), the slaying of Karṇa was vowed (saṃśruta) by Arjuna (Pārtha).
वधे त्वकुर्वन्यत्नं ते तस्य कर्णमुखास्तदा ।
नाशक्नुवंश्च तं हन्तुं सात्यकिं प्रवरा रथाः ॥७१॥
71. vadhe tvakurvanyatnaṁ te tasya karṇamukhāstadā ,
nāśaknuvaṁśca taṁ hantuṁ sātyakiṁ pravarā rathāḥ.

na aśaknuvan ca tam hantum sātyakim pravarāḥ rathāḥ

71. Then, the foremost charioteers, led by Karṇa, made efforts to kill him (Satyaki), but they were unable to kill him.
द्रौणिश्च कृतवर्मा च तथैवान्ये महारथाः ।
निर्जिता धनुषैकेन शतशः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ।
काङ्क्षता परलोकं च धर्मराजस्य च प्रियम् ॥७२॥
72. drauṇiśca kṛtavarmā ca tathaivānye mahārathāḥ ,
nirjitā dhanuṣaikena śataśaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ,
kāṅkṣatā paralokaṁ ca dharmarājasya ca priyam.

72. And Droṇa's son, Kṛtavarmā, and similarly other great charioteers – hundreds of the best warriors (kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ) – were defeated by a single bow (wielded by Satyak), who was desiring both the other world (paraloka) and the favor of the king of natural law (dharma).
कृष्णयोः सदृशो वीर्ये सात्यकिः शत्रुकर्शनः ।
कृष्णो वापि भवेल्लोके पार्थो वापि धनुर्धरः ।
शैनेयो वा नरव्याघ्रश्चतुर्थो नोपलभ्यते ॥७३॥
73. kṛṣṇayoḥ sadṛśo vīrye sātyakiḥ śatrukarśanaḥ ,
kṛṣṇo vāpi bhavelloke pārtho vāpi dhanurdharaḥ ,
śaineyo vā naravyāghraścaturtho nopalabhyate.

73. Satyak, the destroyer of enemies, is equal to both Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna in valor. Kṛṣṇa may exist in the world, or Arjuna, the great bowman, or Śaineya (Satyak), the tiger among men, but a fourth (of their caliber) is not to be found.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
अजय्यं रथमास्थाय वासुदेवस्य सात्यकिः ।
विरथं कृतवान्कर्णं वासुदेवसमो युवा ॥७४॥
74. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
ajayyaṁ rathamāsthāya vāsudevasya sātyakiḥ ,
virathaṁ kṛtavānkarṇaṁ vāsudevasamo yuvā.

74. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: Satyak, that young man equal to Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), having ascended Vāsudeva's unconquerable chariot, made Karṇa chariot-less.
दारुकेण समायुक्तं स्वबाहुबलदर्पितः ।
कच्चिदन्यं समारूढः स रथं सात्यकिः पुनः ॥७५॥
75. dārukeṇa samāyuktaṁ svabāhubaladarpitaḥ ,
kaccidanyaṁ samārūḍhaḥ sa rathaṁ sātyakiḥ punaḥ.

75. Is it possible that Sātyaki, proud of the strength of his own arms, has again mounted another chariot, which is accompanied by Dāruka?
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं कुशलो ह्यसि भाषितुम् ।
असह्यं तमहं मन्ये तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥७६॥
76. etadicchāmyahaṁ śrotuṁ kuśalo hyasi bhāṣitum ,
asahyaṁ tamahaṁ manye tanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.
76. etat icchāmi aham śrotum kuśalaḥ hi asi bhāṣitum
asahyam tam aham manye tat mama ācakṣva sañjaya
76. I wish to hear this from you, for you are skilled at speaking. I consider him unbearable, so please tell me all about it, Sañjaya.
संजय उवाच ।
शृणु राजन्यथा तस्य रथमन्यं महामतिः ।
दारुकस्यानुजस्तूर्णं कल्पनाविधिकल्पितम् ॥७७॥
77. saṁjaya uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājanyathā tasya rathamanyaṁ mahāmatiḥ ,
dārukasyānujastūrṇaṁ kalpanāvidhikalpitam.

77. Sañjaya said: O King, listen to how the greatly intelligent younger brother of Dāruka swiftly prepared another chariot for him, which was designed with ingenious methods.
आयसैः काञ्चनैश्चापि पट्टैर्नद्धं सकूबरम् ।
तारासहस्रखचितं सिंहध्वजपताकिनम् ॥७८॥
78. āyasaiḥ kāñcanaiścāpi paṭṭairnaddhaṁ sakūbaram ,
tārāsahasrakhacitaṁ siṁhadhvajapatākinam.
78. āyasaiḥ kāñcanaiḥ ca api paṭṭaiḥ naddham
sakūbaram tārāsahasrakhacitam siṃhadhvajapatākinam
78. (This chariot was) bound with iron and golden plates, equipped with a pole, studded with thousands of stars, and adorned with a lion banner and flag.
अश्वैर्वातजवैर्युक्तं हेमभाण्डपरिच्छदैः ।
पाण्डुरैरिन्दुसंकाशैः सर्वशब्दातिगैर्दृढैः ॥७९॥
79. aśvairvātajavairyuktaṁ hemabhāṇḍaparicchadaiḥ ,
pāṇḍurairindusaṁkāśaiḥ sarvaśabdātigairdṛḍhaiḥ.
79. aśvaiḥ vāta-javaiḥ yuktam hema-bhāṇḍa-paricchadaiḥ
pāṇḍuraiḥ indu-saṃkāśaiḥ sarva-śabdātigaiḥ dṛḍhaiḥ

79. The chariot was furnished with horses swift as the wind, adorned with golden trappings and equipment; they were white, moon-like in appearance, surpassing all sounds (in their swiftness), and strong.
चित्रकाञ्चनसंनाहैर्वाजिमुख्यैर्विशां पते ।
घण्टाजालाकुलरवं शक्तितोमरविद्युतम् ॥८०॥
80. citrakāñcanasaṁnāhairvājimukhyairviśāṁ pate ,
ghaṇṭājālākularavaṁ śaktitomaravidyutam.

ghaṇṭā-jāla-ākula-ravam śakti-tomara-vidyutam

80. O ruler of the people, (it was furnished) with chief horses bearing colorful golden harnesses; (the chariot itself was) made noisy by networks of bells, and flashed with javelins and lances like lightning.
वृतं सांग्रामिकैर्द्रव्यैर्बहुशस्त्रपरिच्छदम् ।
रथं संपादयामास मेघगम्भीरनिस्वनम् ॥८१॥
81. vṛtaṁ sāṁgrāmikairdravyairbahuśastraparicchadam ,
rathaṁ saṁpādayāmāsa meghagambhīranisvanam.

81. (He) prepared a chariot, surrounded by warlike materials, equipped with many weapons, and rumbling with a sound as deep as a cloud.
तं समारुह्य शैनेयस्तव सैन्यमुपाद्रवत् ।
दारुकोऽपि यथाकामं प्रययौ केशवान्तिकम् ॥८२॥
82. taṁ samāruhya śaineyastava sainyamupādravat ,
dāruko'pi yathākāmaṁ prayayau keśavāntikam.

82. Having mounted that (chariot), Sātyaki, the son of Śini, rushed towards your army. Dāruka also went forth as he wished, to the vicinity of Keśava (Kṛṣṇa).
कर्णस्यापि महाराज शङ्खगोक्षीरपाण्डुरैः ।
चित्रकाञ्चनसंनाहैः सदश्वैर्वेगवत्तरैः ॥८३॥
83. karṇasyāpi mahārāja śaṅkhagokṣīrapāṇḍuraiḥ ,
citrakāñcanasaṁnāhaiḥ sadaśvairvegavattaraiḥ.

83. O great king, Karna also had excellent horses, white like conch shells and cow's milk, adorned with brilliant golden harnesses, and exceedingly swift.
हेमकक्ष्याध्वजोपेतं कॢप्तयन्त्रपताकिनम् ।
अग्र्यं रथं सुयन्तारं बहुशस्त्रपरिच्छदम् ॥८४॥
84. hemakakṣyādhvajopetaṁ kḷptayantrapatākinam ,
agryaṁ rathaṁ suyantāraṁ bahuśastraparicchadam.

84. (They brought forth) hemakakṣyādhvajopetam kḷptayantrapatākinam

84. They brought forth an excellent chariot, adorned with golden girths and banners, furnished with fixed mechanisms and standards, having an able charioteer, and equipped with abundant weaponry.
उपाजह्रुस्तमास्थाय कर्णोऽप्यभ्यद्रवद्रिपून् ।
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥८५॥
85. upājahrustamāsthāya karṇo'pyabhyadravadripūn ,
etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ yanmāṁ tvaṁ paripṛcchasi.
85. upājahruḥ tam āsthāya karṇaḥ api abhyadravat ripūn
etat te sarvam ākhyātam yat mām tvam paripṛcchasi
85. (They) tam upājahruḥ; karṇaḥ api āsthāya ripūn abhyadravat.

85. They brought forth that chariot; having mounted it, Karna also rushed towards his enemies. All this, which you questioned me about, has been fully narrated to you.
भूयश्चापि निबोध त्वं तवापनयजं क्षयम् ।
एकत्रिंशत्तव सुता भीमसेनेन पातिताः ॥८६॥
86. bhūyaścāpi nibodha tvaṁ tavāpanayajaṁ kṣayam ,
ekatriṁśattava sutā bhīmasenena pātitāḥ.
86. bhūyaḥ ca api nibodha tvam tava apanayajam
kṣayam ekatriṃśat tava sutāḥ bhīmasenena pātitāḥ

86. And furthermore, you must understand your own ruin (kṣaya), which stems from your transgression. Thirty-one of your sons have been slain by Bhimasena.
दुर्मुखं प्रमुखे कृत्वा सततं चित्रयोधिनम् ।
शतशो निहताः शूराः सात्वतेनार्जुनेन च ॥८७॥
87. durmukhaṁ pramukhe kṛtvā satataṁ citrayodhinam ,
śataśo nihatāḥ śūrāḥ sātvatenārjunena ca.

87. With Durmukha, that constant wondrous warrior, at the forefront, hundreds of heroes were killed by Sātvata and Arjuna.
भीष्मं प्रमुखतः कृत्वा भगदत्तं च मारिष ।
एवमेष क्षयो वृत्तो राजन्दुर्मन्त्रिते तव ॥८८॥
88. bhīṣmaṁ pramukhataḥ kṛtvā bhagadattaṁ ca māriṣa ,
evameṣa kṣayo vṛtto rājandurmantrite tava.
