वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तु राजेन्द्र केशिहा दुःखमूर्छितः ।
तथेति व्याजहारोच्चैर्ह्लादयन्निव तं जनम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktastu rājendra keśihā duḥkhamūrchitaḥ ,
tatheti vyājahāroccairhlādayanniva taṁ janam.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: O King, Kṛṣṇa (keśihā), thus addressed and overcome with sorrow, then loudly replied, "So be it," as if delighting those people.
वाक्येन तेन हि तदा तं जनं पुरुषर्षभः ।
ह्लादयामास स विभुर्घर्मार्तं सलिलैरिव ॥२॥
2. vākyena tena hi tadā taṁ janaṁ puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
hlādayāmāsa sa vibhurgharmārtaṁ salilairiva.
2. vākyena tena hi tadā tam janam puruṣarṣabhaḥ
hlādayāmāsa saḥ vibhuḥ gharmārtam salilaiḥ iva
2. hi tadā tena vākyena saḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ vibhuḥ
tam janam hlādayāmāsa gharmārtam salilaiḥ iva
2. Indeed, at that moment, by that very utterance, he, the supreme person (puruṣarṣabha) and all-pervading (vibhu) lord, gladdened those people, just as one refreshes those tormented by heat with water.
ततः स प्राविशत्तूर्णं जन्मवेश्म पितुस्तव ।
अर्चितं पुरुषव्याघ्र सितैर्माल्यैर्यथाविधि ॥३॥
3. tataḥ sa prāviśattūrṇaṁ janmaveśma pitustava ,
arcitaṁ puruṣavyāghra sitairmālyairyathāvidhi.
3. tataḥ saḥ prāviśat tūrṇam janmaveśma pituḥ tava
arcitam puruṣavyāghra sitaiḥ mālyaiḥ yathāvidhi
3. puruṣavyāghra tataḥ saḥ tūrṇam tava pituḥ janmaveśma
sitaiḥ mālyaiḥ yathāvidhi arcitam prāviśat
3. Then, O tiger among men, he quickly entered your father's birth-chamber, which was properly adorned with white garlands.
अपां कुम्भैः सुपूर्णैश्च विन्यस्तैः सर्वतोदिशम् ।
घृतेन तिन्दुकालातैः सर्षपैश्च महाभुज ॥४॥
4. apāṁ kumbhaiḥ supūrṇaiśca vinyastaiḥ sarvatodiśam ,
ghṛtena tindukālātaiḥ sarṣapaiśca mahābhuja.
4. apām kumbhaiḥ supūrṇaiḥ ca vinyastaiḥ sarvatodiśam
ghṛtena tindukālātaiḥ sarṣapaiḥ ca mahābhuja
4. mahābhuja sarvatodiśam apām supūrṇaiḥ vinyastaiḥ
kumbhaiḥ ca ghṛtena tindukālātaiḥ ca sarṣapaiḥ
4. O mighty-armed, (he saw) water pots filled to the brim and placed in all directions, along with ghee, tinduka wood firebrands, and mustard seeds.
शस्त्रैश्च विमलैर्न्यस्तैः पावकैश्च समन्ततः ।
वृद्धाभिश्चाभिरामाभिः परिचारार्थमच्युतः ॥५॥
5. śastraiśca vimalairnyastaiḥ pāvakaiśca samantataḥ ,
vṛddhābhiścābhirāmābhiḥ paricārārthamacyutaḥ.
5. śastraiḥ ca vimalaiḥ nyastaiḥ pāvakaiḥ ca samantataḥ
vṛddhābhiḥ ca abhirāmābhiḥ paricārārtham acyutaḥ

pāvakaiḥ ca paricārārtham abhirāmābhiḥ ca vṛddhābhiḥ
5. O Acyuta, (he saw) clean weapons placed everywhere, purifying fires, and charming old women for attendance.
दक्षैश्च परितो वीर भिषग्भिः कुशलैस्तथा ।
ददर्श च स तेजस्वी रक्षोघ्नान्यपि सर्वशः ।
द्रव्याणि स्थापितानि स्म विधिवत्कुशलैर्जनैः ॥६॥
6. dakṣaiśca parito vīra bhiṣagbhiḥ kuśalaistathā ,
dadarśa ca sa tejasvī rakṣoghnānyapi sarvaśaḥ ,
dravyāṇi sthāpitāni sma vidhivatkuśalairjanaiḥ.
6. dakṣaiḥ ca paritaḥ vīra bhiṣagbhiḥ
kuśalaiḥ tathā dadarśa ca saḥ tejasvī
rakṣoghnāni api sarvaśaḥ dravyāṇi
sthāpitāni sma vidhivat kuśalaiḥ janaiḥ
6. vīra saḥ tejasvī ca tathā paritaḥ
dakṣaiḥ kuśalaiḥ bhiṣagbhiḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
rakṣoghnāni api vidhivat kuśalaiḥ
janaiḥ sthāpitāni dravyāṇi sma dadarśa
6. O hero, that radiant one further saw skilled physicians all around, and all sorts of demon-averting articles that had been properly placed by expert people.
तथायुक्तं च तद्दृष्ट्वा जन्मवेश्म पितुस्तव ।
हृष्टोऽभवद्धृषीकेशः साधु साध्विति चाब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. tathāyuktaṁ ca taddṛṣṭvā janmaveśma pitustava ,
hṛṣṭo'bhavaddhṛṣīkeśaḥ sādhu sādhviti cābravīt.
7. tathā yuktam ca tat dṛṣṭvā janmaveśma pituḥ tava
hṛṣṭaḥ abhavat hṛṣīkeśaḥ sādhu sādhu iti ca abravīt
7. hṛṣīkeśaḥ tava pituḥ janmaveśma tathā yuktam tat
dṛṣṭvā ca hṛṣṭaḥ abhavat ca sādhu sādhu iti abravīt
7. And seeing your father's birthplace thus furnished, Hṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa) became pleased and said, "Excellent! Excellent!"
तथा ब्रुवति वार्ष्णेये प्रहृष्टवदने तदा ।
द्रौपदी त्वरिता गत्वा वैराटीं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥८॥
8. tathā bruvati vārṣṇeye prahṛṣṭavadane tadā ,
draupadī tvaritā gatvā vairāṭīṁ vākyamabravīt.
8. tathā bruvati vārṣṇeye prahṛṣṭavadane tadā
draupadī tvaritā gatvā vairāṭīm vākyam abravīt
8. tadā prahṛṣṭavadane vārṣṇeye tathā bruvati

8. While Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa) was speaking thus, with a joyful face, at that moment, Draupadī quickly went and spoke to the princess of Virāṭa.
अयमायाति ते भद्रे श्वशुरो मधुसूदनः ।
पुराणर्षिरचिन्त्यात्मा समीपमपराजितः ॥९॥
9. ayamāyāti te bhadre śvaśuro madhusūdanaḥ ,
purāṇarṣiracintyātmā samīpamaparājitaḥ.
9. ayam āyāti te bhadre śvaśuraḥ madhusūdanaḥ
purāṇarṣiḥ acintyātmā samīpam aparājitaḥ
9. bhadre,
te aparājitaḥ purāṇa ṛṣiḥ acintya ātmā śvaśuraḥ madhusūdanaḥ ayam samīpam āyāti
9. “O noble lady, your unconquered father-in-law, Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa), the ancient sage whose intrinsic nature (ātman) is inconceivable, is coming near.”
सापि बाष्पकलां वाचं निगृह्याश्रूणि चैव ह ।
सुसंवीताभवद्देवी देववत्कृष्णमीक्षती ॥१०॥
10. sāpi bāṣpakalāṁ vācaṁ nigṛhyāśrūṇi caiva ha ,
susaṁvītābhavaddevī devavatkṛṣṇamīkṣatī.
10. sā api bāṣpakalām vācam nigṛhya aśrūṇi ca eva
ha suṣaṃvītā abhavat devī devavat kṛṣṇam īkṣatī
10. sā api bāṣpakalām vācam ca eva ha aśrūṇi nigṛhya
devī devavat kṛṣṇam īkṣatī suṣaṃvītā abhavat
10. She too, restraining her tear-choked voice and indeed her tears, became well-composed, gazing at Kṛṣṇa as if he were a deity.
सा तथा दूयमानेन हृदयेन तपस्विनी ।
दृष्ट्वा गोविन्दमायान्तं कृपणं पर्यदेवयत् ॥११॥
11. sā tathā dūyamānena hṛdayena tapasvinī ,
dṛṣṭvā govindamāyāntaṁ kṛpaṇaṁ paryadevayat.
11. sā tathā dūyamānena hṛdayena tapasvinī
dṛṣṭvā govindam āyāntam kṛpaṇam paryadevayat
11. sā tapasvinī tathā dūyamānena hṛdayena
govindam āyāntam dṛṣṭvā kṛpaṇam paryadevayat
11. The distressed woman, her heart thus grieving, lamented pitifully upon seeing Govinda (Kṛṣṇa) approach.
पुण्डरीकाक्ष पश्यस्व बालाविह विनाकृतौ ।
अभिमन्युं च मां चैव हतौ तुल्यं जनार्दन ॥१२॥
12. puṇḍarīkākṣa paśyasva bālāviha vinākṛtau ,
abhimanyuṁ ca māṁ caiva hatau tulyaṁ janārdana.
12. puṇḍarīkākṣa paśyasva bālau iha vinākṛtau
abhimanyum ca mām ca eva hatau tulyam janārdana
12. puṇḍarīkākṣa janārdana iha bālau vinākṛtau
paśyasva abhimanyum ca eva mām ca tulyam hatau
12. O Lotus-Eyed one (Puṇḍarīkākṣa), behold these two children (Abhimanyu and my unborn son) here, left utterly helpless. O Janārdana, Abhimanyu and I are equally as good as slain.
वार्ष्णेय मधुहन्वीर शिरसा त्वां प्रसादये ।
द्रोणपुत्रास्त्रनिर्दग्धं जीवयैनं ममात्मजम् ॥१३॥
13. vārṣṇeya madhuhanvīra śirasā tvāṁ prasādaye ,
droṇaputrāstranirdagdhaṁ jīvayainaṁ mamātmajam.
13. vārṣṇeya madhuhan vīra śirasā tvām prasādaye
droṇaputrāstranirdagdham jīvaya enam mama ātmajam
13. vārṣṇeya madhuhan vīra,
śirasā tvām prasādaye mama droṇaputrāstranirdagdham enam ātmajam jīvaya
13. O Vārṣṇeya, O destroyer of Madhu, O hero, I supplicate you with my head. Revive this son of mine, who has been incinerated by the weapon of Droṇa's son.
यदि स्म धर्मराज्ञा वा भीमसेनेन वा पुनः ।
त्वया वा पुण्डरीकाक्ष वाक्यमुक्तमिदं भवेत् ॥१४॥
14. yadi sma dharmarājñā vā bhīmasenena vā punaḥ ,
tvayā vā puṇḍarīkākṣa vākyamuktamidaṁ bhavet.
14. yadi sma dharmarājñā vā bhīmasenena vā punaḥ
tvayā vā puṇḍarīkākṣa vākyam uktam idam bhavet
14. puṇḍarīkākṣa yadi sma dharmarājñā vā bhīmasenena
vā punaḥ tvayā vā idam vākyam uktam bhavet
14. O Lotus-Eyed one (Puṇḍarīkākṣa), if this statement (vākyam) was indeed spoken either by Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira), or by Bhīmasena, or again by you...
अजानतीमिषीकेयं जनित्रीं हन्त्विति प्रभो ।
अहमेव विनष्टा स्यां नेदमेवंगतं भवेत् ॥१५॥
15. ajānatīmiṣīkeyaṁ janitrīṁ hantviti prabho ,
ahameva vinaṣṭā syāṁ nedamevaṁgataṁ bhavet.
15. ajānatīm iṣīkā iyam janitrīm hantu iti prabho
aham eva vinaṣṭā syām na idam evaṃgatam bhavet
15. prabho iyam iṣīkā ajānatīm janitrīm hantu iti
aham eva vinaṣṭā syām idam evaṃgatam na bhavet
15. O Lord, if this arrow (made of a reed) were to kill the unsuspecting mother, I myself would be ruined. Such a thing must not happen.
गर्भस्थस्यास्य बालस्य ब्रह्मास्त्रेण निपातनम् ।
कृत्वा नृशंसं दुर्बुद्धिर्द्रौणिः किं फलमश्नुते ॥१६॥
16. garbhasthasyāsya bālasya brahmāstreṇa nipātanam ,
kṛtvā nṛśaṁsaṁ durbuddhirdrauṇiḥ kiṁ phalamaśnute.
16. garbhasthasya asya bālasya brahmāstreṇa nipātanam
kṛtvā nṛśaṃsam durbuddhiḥ droṇiḥ kim phalam aśnute
16. durbuddhiḥ droṇiḥ garbhasthasya asya bālasya
brahmāstreṇa nṛśaṃsam nipātanam kṛtvā kim phalam aśnute
16. What fruit does the evil-minded Droṇi achieve by cruelly slaying this child, who is still in the womb, with the divine weapon (brahmāstra)?
सा त्वा प्रसाद्य शिरसा याचे शत्रुनिबर्हण ।
प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्यामि गोविन्द नायं संजीवते यदि ॥१७॥
17. sā tvā prasādya śirasā yāce śatrunibarhaṇa ,
prāṇāṁstyakṣyāmi govinda nāyaṁ saṁjīvate yadi.
17. sā tvā prasādya śirasā yāce śatrunibarhaṇa
prāṇān tyakṣyāmi govinda na ayam saṃjīvate yadi
17. śatrunibarhaṇa govinda sā tvā prasādya śirasā
yāce yadi ayam na saṃjīvate prāṇān tyakṣyāmi
17. O Destroyer of enemies, bowing my head, I implore you, O Govinda! I shall give up my life if this (child) does not revive.
अस्मिन्हि बहवः साधो ये ममासन्मनोरथाः ।
ते द्रोणपुत्रेण हताः किं नु जीवामि केशव ॥१८॥
18. asminhi bahavaḥ sādho ye mamāsanmanorathāḥ ,
te droṇaputreṇa hatāḥ kiṁ nu jīvāmi keśava.
18. asmin hi bahavaḥ sādho ye mama āsan manorathāḥ
te droṇaputreṇa hatāḥ kim nu jīvāmi keśava
18. sādho hi asmin ye mama bahavaḥ manorathāḥ āsan
te droṇaputreṇa hatāḥ keśava kim nu jīvāmi
18. O virtuous one, many hopes of mine were indeed centered on this (child). Those have been destroyed by the son of Droṇa. O Keśava, why should I continue to live?
आसीन्मम मतिः कृष्ण पूर्णोत्सङ्गा जनार्दन ।
अभिवादयिष्ये दिष्ट्येति तदिदं वितथीकृतम् ॥१९॥
19. āsīnmama matiḥ kṛṣṇa pūrṇotsaṅgā janārdana ,
abhivādayiṣye diṣṭyeti tadidaṁ vitathīkṛtam.
19. āsīt mama matiḥ kṛṣṇa pūrṇotsaṅgā janārdana
abhivādayiṣye diṣṭyā iti tat idam vitathīkṛtam
19. kṛṣṇa janārdana mama matiḥ āsīt "diṣṭyā pūrṇotsaṅgā
abhivādayiṣye" iti tat idam vitathīkṛtam
19. O Kṛṣṇa, O Janārdana, my hope was, 'Fortunately, I will joyfully welcome him.' But now that very hope has been rendered futile.
चपलाक्षस्य दायादे मृतेऽस्मिन्पुरुषर्षभ ।
विफला मे कृताः कृष्ण हृदि सर्वे मनोरथाः ॥२०॥
20. capalākṣasya dāyāde mṛte'sminpuruṣarṣabha ,
viphalā me kṛtāḥ kṛṣṇa hṛdi sarve manorathāḥ.
20. capalākṣasya dāyāde mṛte asmin puruṣarṣabha
viphalāḥ me kṛtāḥ kṛṣṇa hṛdi sarve manorathāḥ
20. kṛṣṇa puruṣarṣabha asmin capalākṣasya dāyāde
mṛte me hṛdi sarve manorathāḥ viphalāḥ kṛtāḥ
20. O Kṛṣṇa, O best among men, with the death of this heir, the son of the swift-eyed one, all my heart's desires have been rendered fruitless.
चपलाक्षः किलातीव प्रियस्ते मधुसूदन ।
सुतं पश्यस्व तस्येमं ब्रह्मास्त्रेण निपातितम् ॥२१॥
21. capalākṣaḥ kilātīva priyaste madhusūdana ,
sutaṁ paśyasva tasyemaṁ brahmāstreṇa nipātitam.
21. capalākṣaḥ kila atīva priyaḥ te madhusūdana
sutam paśyasva tasya imam brahmāstreṇa nipātitam
21. madhusūdana kila capalākṣaḥ te atīva priyaḥ (āsīt)
tasya imam sutam brahmāstreṇa nipātitam paśyasva
21. O Madhusūdana, they say that the swift-eyed one was exceedingly dear to you. Behold this son of his, struck down by the Brahmāstra.
कृतघ्नोऽयं नृशंसोऽयं यथास्य जनकस्तथा ।
यः पाण्डवीं श्रियं त्यक्त्वा गतोऽद्य यमसादनम् ॥२२॥
22. kṛtaghno'yaṁ nṛśaṁso'yaṁ yathāsya janakastathā ,
yaḥ pāṇḍavīṁ śriyaṁ tyaktvā gato'dya yamasādanam.
22. kṛtaghnaḥ ayam nṛśaṃsaḥ ayam yathā asya janakaḥ tathā
yaḥ pāṇḍavīm śriyam tyaktvā gataḥ adya yamasādanam
22. ayam kṛtaghnaḥ ayam nṛśaṃsaḥ yathā asya janakaḥ tathā
yaḥ pāṇḍavīm śriyam tyaktvā adya yamasādanam gataḥ
22. This one is ungrateful; this one is cruel, just as his father was. He, who, having abandoned the prosperity of the Pāṇḍavas, has gone to the abode of Yama today.
मया चैतत्प्रतिज्ञातं रणमूर्धनि केशव ।
अभिमन्यौ हते वीर त्वामेष्याम्यचिरादिति ॥२३॥
23. mayā caitatpratijñātaṁ raṇamūrdhani keśava ,
abhimanyau hate vīra tvāmeṣyāmyacirāditi.
23. mayā ca etat pratijñātam raṇamūrdhani keśava
abhimanyau hate vīra tvām eṣyāmi acirāt iti
23. O Keśava, O hero, I made this vow on the battlefield: 'When Abhimanyu is killed, I will soon follow you (in death).'
तच्च नाकरवं कृष्ण नृशंसा जीवितप्रिया ।
इदानीमागतां तत्र किं नु वक्ष्यति फाल्गुनिः ॥२४॥
24. tacca nākaravaṁ kṛṣṇa nṛśaṁsā jīvitapriyā ,
idānīmāgatāṁ tatra kiṁ nu vakṣyati phālguniḥ.
24. tat ca na akaravam kṛṣṇa nṛśaṃsā jīvitapriyā
idānīm āgatām tatra kim nu vakṣyati phālguniḥ
24. O Krishna, I am a cruel woman, fond of life, and I did not fulfill that vow. Now that I have come (remained alive), what will Phālguni (Arjuna) say to me there?
