व्यास उवाच ।
धृतराष्ट्र महाप्राज्ञ निबोध वचनं मम ।
वक्ष्यामि त्वा कौरवाणां सर्वेषां हितमुत्तमम् ॥१॥
1. vyāsa uvāca ,
dhṛtarāṣṭra mahāprājña nibodha vacanaṁ mama ,
vakṣyāmi tvā kauravāṇāṁ sarveṣāṁ hitamuttamam.
1. vyāsaḥ uvāca dhṛtarāṣṭra mahāprājña nibodha vacanam
mama vakṣyāmi tvā kauravāṇām sarveṣām hitam uttamam
1. Vyasa said: 'O Dhritarashtra, O greatly wise one, pay attention to my words. I will tell you what is the supreme benefit for all the Kauravas.'
न मे प्रियं महाबाहो यद्गताः पाण्डवा वनम् ।
निकृत्या निर्जिताश्चैव दुर्योधनवशानुगैः ॥२॥
2. na me priyaṁ mahābāho yadgatāḥ pāṇḍavā vanam ,
nikṛtyā nirjitāścaiva duryodhanavaśānugaiḥ.
2. na me priyam mahābāho yat gatāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ vanam
nikṛtyā nirjitāḥ ca eva duryodhanavaśānugaiḥ
2. O mighty-armed one (mahābāhu), it is not pleasing to me that the Pandavas have gone to the forest, having been defeated by deceit by Duryodhana's adherents.
ते स्मरन्तः परिक्लेशान्वर्षे पूर्णे त्रयोदशे ।
विमोक्ष्यन्ति विषं क्रुद्धाः कौरवेयेषु भारत ॥३॥
3. te smarantaḥ parikleśānvarṣe pūrṇe trayodaśe ,
vimokṣyanti viṣaṁ kruddhāḥ kauraveyeṣu bhārata.
3. te smarantaḥ parikleśān varṣe pūrṇe trayodaśe
vimokṣyanti viṣam kruddhāḥ kauraveyeṣu bhārata
3. O Bhārata, those (Pāṇḍavas), enraged and remembering their severe afflictions, will, upon the completion of the thirteenth year, unleash their venom upon the Kauravas.
तदयं किं नु पापात्मा तव पुत्रः सुमन्दधीः ।
पाण्डवान्नित्यसंक्रुद्धो राज्यहेतोर्जिघांसति ॥४॥
4. tadayaṁ kiṁ nu pāpātmā tava putraḥ sumandadhīḥ ,
pāṇḍavānnityasaṁkruddho rājyahetorjighāṁsati.
4. tat ayam kim nu pāpātmā tava putraḥ sumandadīḥ
pāṇḍavān nityasaṃkruddhaḥ rājyahetoḥ jighāṃsati
4. So, why does this wicked and exceedingly foolish son of yours, who is constantly enraged, desire to kill the Pāṇḍavas for the sake of the kingdom?
वार्यतां साध्वयं मूढः शमं गच्छतु ते सुतः ।
वनस्थांस्तानयं हन्तुमिच्छन्प्राणैर्विमोक्ष्यते ॥५॥
5. vāryatāṁ sādhvayaṁ mūḍhaḥ śamaṁ gacchatu te sutaḥ ,
vanasthāṁstānayaṁ hantumicchanprāṇairvimokṣyate.
5. vāryatām sādhu ayam mūḍhaḥ śamam gacchatu te sutaḥ
vanasthān tān ayam hantum icchan prāṇaiḥ vimokṣyate
5. Indeed, let this foolish son of yours be restrained; let him attain peace. If he desires to kill those who reside in the forest, he will lose his own life (prāṇa).
यथाह विदुरः प्राज्ञो यथा भीष्मो यथा वयम् ।
यथा कृपश्च द्रोणश्च तथा साधु विधीयताम् ॥६॥
6. yathāha viduraḥ prājño yathā bhīṣmo yathā vayam ,
yathā kṛpaśca droṇaśca tathā sādhu vidhīyatām.
6. yathā āha viduraḥ prājñaḥ yathā bhīṣmaḥ yathā vayam
yathā kṛpaḥ ca droṇaḥ ca tathā sādhu vidhīyatām
6. Let it be done properly, just as wise Vidura, as Bhīṣma, as we ourselves, and as Kṛpa and Droṇa have advised.
विग्रहो हि महाप्राज्ञ स्वजनेन विगर्हितः ।
अधर्म्यमयशस्यं च मा राजन्प्रतिपद्यथाः ॥७॥
7. vigraho hi mahāprājña svajanena vigarhitaḥ ,
adharmyamayaśasyaṁ ca mā rājanpratipadyathāḥ.
7. vigrahaḥ hi mahāprājña svajanena vigarhitaḥ
adharmyam ayaśasyam ca mā rājan pratipadyathāḥ
7. Indeed, O greatly wise one, conflict with one's own kinsmen is condemned. O king, do not embark upon that which is contrary to natural law (dharma) and brings dishonor.
समीक्षा यादृशी ह्यस्य पाण्डवान्प्रति भारत ।
उपेक्ष्यमाणा सा राजन्महान्तमनयं स्पृशेत् ॥८॥
8. samīkṣā yādṛśī hyasya pāṇḍavānprati bhārata ,
upekṣyamāṇā sā rājanmahāntamanayaṁ spṛśet.
8. samīkṣā yādṛśī hi asya pāṇḍavān prati bhārata
upekṣyamāṇā sā rājan mahāntam anayam spṛśet
8. O descendant of Bharata, whatever consideration (or counsel) there is concerning the Pāṇḍavas, if that is disregarded, O king, it would surely lead to a great calamity.
अथ वायं सुमन्दात्मा वनं गच्छतु ते सुतः ।
पाण्डवैः सहितो राजन्नेक एवासहायवान् ॥९॥
9. atha vāyaṁ sumandātmā vanaṁ gacchatu te sutaḥ ,
pāṇḍavaiḥ sahito rājanneka evāsahāyavān.
9. atha vā ayam sumandātmā vanam gacchatu te sutaḥ
pāṇḍavaiḥ sahitaḥ rājan ekaḥ eva asahāyavān
9. Alternatively, O king, let this exceedingly foolish son of yours go to the forest, accompanied by the Pāṇḍavas, where he will indeed be alone and without supporters.
ततः संसर्गजः स्नेहः पुत्रस्य तव पाण्डवैः ।
यदि स्यात्कृतकार्योऽद्य भवेस्त्वं मनुजेश्वर ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ saṁsargajaḥ snehaḥ putrasya tava pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
yadi syātkṛtakāryo'dya bhavestvaṁ manujeśvara.
10. tataḥ saṃsargajaḥ snehaḥ putrasya tava pāṇḍavaiḥ
yadi syāt kṛtakāryaḥ adya bhaveḥ tvam manujeśvara
10. Then, O lord of men, if affection for the Pāṇḍavas were to arise in your son from this association, you would today have accomplished your purpose.
अथ वा जायमानस्य यच्छीलमनुजायते ।
श्रूयते तन्महाराज नामृतस्यापसर्पति ॥११॥
11. atha vā jāyamānasya yacchīlamanujāyate ,
śrūyate tanmahārāja nāmṛtasyāpasarpati.
11. atha vā jāyamānasya yat śīlam anujāyate
śrūyate tat mahārāja na amṛtasya apasarati
11. Or, O great king, the disposition (śīla) with which a person is born, it is heard, does not abandon the immortal (ātman).
कथं वा मन्यते भीष्मो द्रोणो वा विदुरोऽपि वा ।
भवान्वात्र क्षमं कार्यं पुरा चार्थोऽतिवर्तते ॥१२॥
12. kathaṁ vā manyate bhīṣmo droṇo vā viduro'pi vā ,
bhavānvātra kṣamaṁ kāryaṁ purā cārtho'tivartate.
12. katham vā manyate bhīṣmaḥ droṇaḥ vā viduraḥ api vā
bhavān vā atra kṣamam kāryam purā ca arthaḥ ativartate
12. How do Bhishma, Drona, or Vidura, or even you, regard this action as appropriate, before the objective (artha) is violated?
