निहत्यालायुधं रक्षः प्रहृष्टात्मा घटोत्कचः ।
ननाद विविधान्नादान्वाहिन्याः प्रमुखे स्थितः ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
nihatyālāyudhaṁ rakṣaḥ prahṛṣṭātmā ghaṭotkacaḥ ,
nanāda vividhānnādānvāhinyāḥ pramukhe sthitaḥ.

1. Sanjaya said: Having slain the demon (rakṣas) Alayudha, Ghatotkaca, with a greatly exultant spirit, stood at the vanguard of the army and let out various roars.
तस्य तं तुमुलं शब्दं श्रुत्वा कुञ्जरकम्पनम् ।
तावकानां महाराज भयमासीत्सुदारुणम् ॥२॥
2. tasya taṁ tumulaṁ śabdaṁ śrutvā kuñjarakampanam ,
tāvakānāṁ mahārāja bhayamāsītsudāruṇam.
2. tasya tam tumulam śabdam śrutvā kuñjara-kampanam
tāvakānām mahārāja bhayam āsīt su-dāruṇam

2. O great king (mahārāja), upon hearing that tumultuous sound of his, which caused elephants to tremble, a most dreadful fear seized your warriors.
अलायुधविषक्तं तु भैमसेनिं महाबलम् ।
दृष्ट्वा कर्णो महाबाहुः पाञ्चालान्समुपाद्रवत् ॥३॥
3. alāyudhaviṣaktaṁ tu bhaimaseniṁ mahābalam ,
dṛṣṭvā karṇo mahābāhuḥ pāñcālānsamupādravat.
3. alāyudha-viṣaktam tu bhaimasenim mahā-balam
dṛṣṭvā karṇaḥ mahā-bāhuḥ pāñcālān sam-upādravat
3. tu mahā-bāhuḥ karṇaḥ alāyudha-viṣaktam mahā-balam bhaimasenim dṛṣṭvā pāñcālān sam-upādravat.
3. But Karna, the mighty-armed (mahābāhu), seeing Bhimasena's son (Ghatotkaca) engaged with Alayudha and possessing great strength, charged towards the Pañcālas.
दशभिर्दशभिर्बाणैर्धृष्टद्युम्नशिखण्डिनौ ।
दृढैः पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैर्बिभेद नतपर्वभिः ॥४॥
4. daśabhirdaśabhirbāṇairdhṛṣṭadyumnaśikhaṇḍinau ,
dṛḍhaiḥ pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭairbibheda nataparvabhiḥ.
4. daśabhiḥ daśabhiḥ bāṇaiḥ dhṛṣṭadyumna-śikhaṇḍinau
dṛḍhaiḥ pūrṇa-āyata-utsṛṣṭaiḥ bibheda nata-parvabhiḥ
4. (karṇaḥ) dṛḍhaiḥ pūrṇa-āyata-utsṛṣṭaiḥ nata-parvabhiḥ daśabhiḥ daśabhiḥ bāṇaiḥ dhṛṣṭadyumna-śikhaṇḍinau bibheda.
4. With ten arrows each - firm, shot with full draw, and having straight shafts - he pierced Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Śikhaṇḍī.
ततः परमनाराचैर्युधामन्यूत्तमौजसौ ।
सात्यकिं च रथोदारं कम्पयामास मार्गणैः ॥५॥
5. tataḥ paramanārācairyudhāmanyūttamaujasau ,
sātyakiṁ ca rathodāraṁ kampayāmāsa mārgaṇaiḥ.
5. tataḥ paramanārācaiḥ yudhāmanyu uttamaujasau
sātyakim ca rathodāram kampayāmāsa mārgaṇaiḥ

5. Then, Yudhāmanyu and Uttamaujas, with their excellent iron arrows, made the great charioteer Sātyaki tremble with their shafts.
तेषामभ्यस्यतां तत्र सर्वेषां सव्यदक्षिणम् ।
मण्डलान्येव चापानि व्यदृश्यन्त जनाधिप ॥६॥
6. teṣāmabhyasyatāṁ tatra sarveṣāṁ savyadakṣiṇam ,
maṇḍalānyeva cāpāni vyadṛśyanta janādhipa.
6. teṣām abhyasyatām tatra sarveṣām savyadakṣiṇam
maṇḍalāni eva cāpāni vyadṛśyanta janādhipa
6. janādhipa teṣām sarveṣām tatra abhyasyatām

6. O ruler of men, as all of them practiced there, their bows, moving swiftly from left to right, appeared indeed like circles.
तेषां ज्यातलनिर्घोषो रथनेमिस्वनश्च ह ।
मेघानामिव घर्मान्ते बभूव तुमुलो निशि ॥७॥
7. teṣāṁ jyātalanirghoṣo rathanemisvanaśca ha ,
meghānāmiva gharmānte babhūva tumulo niśi.
7. teṣām jyātalnirghoṣaḥ rathanemisvanaḥ ca ha
meghānām iva gharmānte babhūva tumulaḥ niśi
7. teṣām jyātalnirghoṣaḥ ca rathanemisvanaḥ ha

7. And indeed, the tremendous sound of their bowstrings and the slap of their hands (on the bows), along with the clamor of their chariot wheels, became like the roar of thunder clouds at the end of the summer season, in the night.
ज्यानेमिघोषस्तनयित्नुमान्वै धनुस्तडिन्मण्डलकेतुशृङ्गः ।
शरौघवर्षाकुलवृष्टिमांश्च संग्राममेघः स बभूव राजन् ॥८॥
8. jyānemighoṣastanayitnumānvai; dhanustaḍinmaṇḍalaketuśṛṅgaḥ ,
śaraughavarṣākulavṛṣṭimāṁśca; saṁgrāmameghaḥ sa babhūva rājan.

8. O King, that war-cloud (the assembled warriors) appeared, truly like a thunder-cloud, whose roar of bowstrings and chariot wheels was like thunder, whose bows were like circles of lightning and whose banners were like mountain peaks, and which poured forth a tumultuous shower of arrows.
तदुद्धतं शैल इवाप्रकम्प्यो वर्षं महच्छैलसमानसारः ।
विध्वंसयामास रणे नरेन्द्र वैकर्तनः शत्रुगणावमर्दी ॥९॥
9. taduddhataṁ śaila ivāprakampyo; varṣaṁ mahacchailasamānasāraḥ ,
vidhvaṁsayāmāsa raṇe narendra; vaikartanaḥ śatrugaṇāvamardī.
9. tat uddhatam śaila iva aprakampyaḥ
varṣam mahacchaila-samāna-sāraḥ
vidhvaṃsayāmāsa raṇe narendra

9. O King, Vaikartana (Karna), the crusher of enemy throngs, unshakeable like a mountain, a veritable downpour [of might], and whose power was equal to a great mountain, utterly destroyed that arrogant [force] in battle.
ततोऽतुलैर्वज्रनिपातकल्पैः शितैः शरैः काञ्चनचित्रपुङ्खैः ।
शत्रून्व्यपोहत्समरे महात्मा वैकर्तनः पुत्रहिते रतस्ते ॥१०॥
10. tato'tulairvajranipātakalpaiḥ; śitaiḥ śaraiḥ kāñcanacitrapuṅkhaiḥ ,
śatrūnvyapohatsamare mahātmā; vaikartanaḥ putrahite rataste.
10. tataḥ atulaiḥ vajranipātakalpaiḥ
śitaiḥ śaraiḥ kāñcanacitrapuṅkhaiḥ
śatrūn vyapohat samare mahātmā
vaikartanaḥ putra-hite rataḥ te
10. tataḥ te putra-hite rataḥ mahātmā
vaikartanaḥ samare atulaiḥ
vajranipātakalpaiḥ śitaiḥ
kāñcanacitrapuṅkhaiḥ śaraiḥ śatrūn vyapohat
10. Then, that great-souled Vaikartana (Karna), who was engaged in the welfare of your sons, scattered the enemies in battle with incomparable, sharp arrows, resembling the impact of a thunderbolt and having beautifully ornate gold-feathered shafts.
संछिन्नभिन्नध्वजिनश्च केचित्केचिच्छरैरर्दितभिन्नदेहाः ।
केचिद्विसूता विहयाश्च केचिद्वैकर्तनेनाशु कृता बभूवुः ॥११॥
11. saṁchinnabhinnadhvajinaśca keci;tkeciccharairarditabhinnadehāḥ ,
kecidvisūtā vihayāśca keci;dvaikartanenāśu kṛtā babhūvuḥ.
11. saṃchinnabhinnadhvajinaḥ ca kecit
kecit śaraiḥ arditabhinnadehāḥ
kecit visūtā vihayāḥ ca kecit
vaikartanena āśu kṛtā babhūvuḥ
11. kecit ca saṃchinnabhinnadhvajinaḥ,
kecit śaraiḥ arditabhinnadehāḥ,
kecit visūtāḥ ca kecit vihayāḥ,
(iti sarve) vaikartanena āśu kṛtā babhūvuḥ
11. Swiftly by Vaikartana (Karna), some [enemies] had their banners cut and shattered; others had their bodies tormented and pierced by arrows; and still others were left without charioteers or without horses.
अविन्दमानास्त्वथ शर्म संख्ये यौधिष्ठिरं ते बलमन्वपद्यन् ।
तान्प्रेक्ष्य भग्नान्विमुखीकृतांश्च घटोत्कचो रोषमतीव चक्रे ॥१२॥
12. avindamānāstvatha śarma saṁkhye; yaudhiṣṭhiraṁ te balamanvapadyan ,
tānprekṣya bhagnānvimukhīkṛtāṁśca; ghaṭotkaco roṣamatīva cakre.
12. avindamānāḥ tu atha śarma saṃkhye
te yauhiṣṭhiram balam anvapadyan
tān prekṣya bhagnān vimukhīkṛtān
ca ghaṭotkacaḥ roṣam atīva cakre
12. atha saṃkhye śarma avindamānāḥ te yauhiṣṭhiram balam anvapadyan.
tān bhagnān ca vimukhīkṛtān prekṣya tu ghaṭotkacaḥ atīva roṣam cakre.
12. Then, those [soldiers] not finding any refuge in battle, resorted to Yudhishthira's army. Seeing those [soldiers] routed and disheartened, Ghatotkacha became extremely angry.
आस्थाय तं काञ्चनरत्नचित्रं रथोत्तमं सिंह इवोन्ननाद ।
वैकर्तनं कर्णमुपेत्य चापि विव्याध वज्रप्रतिमैः पृषत्कैः ॥१३॥
13. āsthāya taṁ kāñcanaratnacitraṁ; rathottamaṁ siṁha ivonnanāda ,
vaikartanaṁ karṇamupetya cāpi; vivyādha vajrapratimaiḥ pṛṣatkaiḥ.
13. āsthāya tam kāñcanaratnacitram
rathottamam siṃhaḥ iva unnanaāda |
vaikartanam karṇam upetya ca api
vivyādha vajrapratimaiḥ pṛṣatkaiḥ
13. tam kāñcanaratnacitram rathottamam āsthāya,
siṃhaḥ iva unnanaāda.
ca vaikartanam karṇam upetya api,
vajrapratimaiḥ pṛṣatkaiḥ vivyādha.
13. He mounted that splendid chariot, adorned with gold and jewels, and roared like a lion. Then, having approached Karna, the son of Vikartana, he also struck him with arrows as powerful as thunderbolts.
तौ कर्णिनाराचशिलीमुखैश्च नालीकदण्डैश्च सवत्सदन्तैः ।
वराहकर्णैः सविषाणशृङ्गैः क्षुरप्रवर्षैश्च विनेदतुः खम् ॥१४॥
14. tau karṇinārācaśilīmukhaiśca; nālīkadaṇḍaiśca savatsadantaiḥ ,
varāhakarṇaiḥ saviṣāṇaśṛṅgaiḥ; kṣurapravarṣaiśca vinedatuḥ kham.

nālīkadaṇḍāiḥ ca savatsadantāiḥ
| varāhakarṇāiḥ saviṣāṇaśṛṅgāiḥ

14. tau karṇinārācaśilīmukhāiḥ ca nālīkadaṇḍāiḥ ca savatsadantāiḥ varāhakarṇāiḥ saviṣāṇaśṛṅgāiḥ kṣurapravarṣāiḥ ca kham vinedatuḥ.
14. Those two warriors filled the sky with their roars and with various arrows: barbed arrows, iron arrows, broad-headed arrows, tubular arrows, reed-shafted arrows, arrows resembling calves' teeth, boar-ear shaped arrows, horn-tipped arrows, and showers of razor-edged arrows.
तद्बाणधारावृतमन्तरिक्षं तिर्यग्गताभिः समरे रराज ।
सुवर्णपुङ्खज्वलितप्रभाभिर्विचित्रपुष्पाभिरिव स्रजाभिः ॥१५॥
15. tadbāṇadhārāvṛtamantarikṣaṁ; tiryaggatābhiḥ samare rarāja ,
suvarṇapuṅkhajvalitaprabhābhi;rvicitrapuṣpābhiriva srajābhiḥ.
15. tat bāṇadhārāvṛtam antarikṣam
tiryaggatābhiḥ samare rarāja |
suvarṇapuṅkhajvalitaprabhābhiḥ
vicitrapuṣpābhiḥ iva srajābhiḥ
15. samare tiryaggatābhiḥ bāṇadhārāvṛtam tat antarikṣam suvarṇapuṅkhajvalitaprabhābhiḥ vicitrapuṣpābhiḥ srajābhiḥ iva rarāja.
15. In that battle, the sky, covered by streams of arrows flying crosswise, shone splendidly. It was as if adorned with diverse flower garlands, gleaming with the brilliant light from their golden shafts.
समं हि तावप्रतिमप्रभावावन्योन्यमाजघ्नतुरुत्तमास्त्रैः ।
तयोर्हि वीरोत्तमयोर्न कश्चिद्ददर्श तस्मिन्समरे विशेषम् ॥१६॥
16. samaṁ hi tāvapratimaprabhāvā;vanyonyamājaghnaturuttamāstraiḥ ,
tayorhi vīrottamayorna kaści;ddadarśa tasminsamare viśeṣam.
16. samam hi tau apratimaprabhāvau
anyonyam ājaghnatuḥ uttamāstraiḥ
| tayoḥ hi vīrottamayauḥ na kaścit
dadarśa tasmin samare viśeṣam
16. hi tau apratimaprabhāvau samam uttamāstraiḥ anyonyam ājaghnatuḥ.
hi tasmin samare tayoḥ vīrottamayauḥ kaścit na viśeṣam dadarśa.
16. Indeed, those two warriors, possessing unequalled power, struck each other equally with their excellent weapons. Truly, no one in that battle could discern any distinction between those two supreme heroes.
अतीव तच्चित्रमतीव रूपं बभूव युद्धं रविभीमसून्वोः ।
समाकुलं शस्त्रनिपातघोरं दिवीव राह्वंशुमतोः प्रतप्तम् ॥१७॥
17. atīva taccitramatīva rūpaṁ; babhūva yuddhaṁ ravibhīmasūnvoḥ ,
samākulaṁ śastranipātaghoraṁ; divīva rāhvaṁśumatoḥ prataptam.
17. atīva tat citram atīva rūpam
babhūva yuddham ravibhīmasūnvoḥ
samākulam śastranipātaghoram
divi iva rāhu aṃśumatoḥ prataptam
17. The battle between Karṇa and Ghaṭotkaca was exceedingly astonishing and intensely fierce. It was tumultuous and terrible due to the incessant shower of weapons, resembling the fierce conflict between Rāhu and the Sun (aṃśumat) in the heavens.
घटोत्कचो यदा कर्णं न विशेषयते नृप ।
तदा प्रादुश्चकारोग्रमस्त्रमस्त्रविदां वरः ॥१८॥
18. ghaṭotkaco yadā karṇaṁ na viśeṣayate nṛpa ,
tadā prāduścakārogramastramastravidāṁ varaḥ.
18. ghaṭotkacaḥ yadā karṇam na viśeṣayate nṛpa tadā
prādus cakāra ugram astram astravidām varaḥ
18. O King, when Ghaṭotkaca could not gain an advantage over Karṇa, then the foremost among weapon experts (astravid) manifested a formidable weapon.
तेनास्त्रेण हयान्पूर्वं हत्वा कर्णस्य राक्षसः ।
सारथिं चैव हैडिम्बः क्षिप्रमन्तरधीयत ॥१९॥
19. tenāstreṇa hayānpūrvaṁ hatvā karṇasya rākṣasaḥ ,
sārathiṁ caiva haiḍimbaḥ kṣipramantaradhīyata.
19. tena astreṇa hayān pūrvam hatvā karṇasya rākṣasaḥ
sārathim ca eva haiḍimbaḥ kṣipram antaradhīyata
19. With that weapon, the demon Haiḍimba, having first killed Karṇa's horses and also his charioteer, quickly disappeared.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
तथा ह्यन्तर्हिते तस्मिन्कूटयोधिनि राक्षसे ।
मामकैः प्रतिपन्नं यत्तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥२०॥
20. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
tathā hyantarhite tasminkūṭayodhini rākṣase ,
māmakaiḥ pratipannaṁ yattanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.
20. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca tathā hi antarhite tasmin kūṭayodhini
rākṣase māmakaiḥ pratipannam yat tat mama ācakṣva saṃjaya
20. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "Indeed, when that deceitful demon (rākṣasa), who fought unfairly, had thus disappeared, tell me, Saṃjaya, what action my warriors (māmaka) then took."
संजय उवाच ।
अन्तर्हितं राक्षसं तं विदित्वा संप्राक्रोशन्कुरवः सर्व एव ।
कथं नायं राक्षसः कूटयोधी हन्यात्कर्णं समरेऽदृश्यमानः ॥२१॥
21. saṁjaya uvāca ,
antarhitaṁ rākṣasaṁ taṁ viditvā; saṁprākrośankuravaḥ sarva eva ,
kathaṁ nāyaṁ rākṣasaḥ kūṭayodhī; hanyātkarṇaṁ samare'dṛśyamānaḥ.
21. sañjayaḥ uvāca antahitam rākṣasam
tam viditvā samprākrośan kuravaḥ sarve
eva katham na ayam rākṣasaḥ
kūṭayodhī hanyāt karṇam samare adṛśyamānaḥ
21. sañjayaḥ uvāca kuravaḥ sarve eva tam
rākṣasam antahitam viditvā samprākrośan
ayam kūṭayodhī rākṣasaḥ adṛśyamānaḥ
samare karṇam katham na hanyāt?
21. Sañjaya said: When the Kauravas realized that the demon had become invisible, all of them cried out, "How will this demon, who fights deceitfully, not kill Karṇa in battle while remaining unseen?"
ततः कर्णो लघुचित्रास्त्रयोधी सर्वा दिशो व्यावृणोद्बाणजालैः ।
न वै किंचिद्व्यापतत्तत्र भूतं तमोभूते सायकैरन्तरिक्षे ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ karṇo laghucitrāstrayodhī; sarvā diśo vyāvṛṇodbāṇajālaiḥ ,
na vai kiṁcidvyāpatattatra bhūtaṁ; tamobhūte sāyakairantarikṣe.
22. tataḥ karṇaḥ laghucitrāstrayodhī
sarvāḥ diśaḥ vyāvṛṇot bāṇajālaiḥ
na vai kiñcit vyāpatat tatra
bhūtam tamobhūte sāyakaiḥ antarikṣe
22. tataḥ laghucitrāstrayodhī karṇaḥ
sarvāḥ diśaḥ bāṇajālaiḥ vyāvṛṇot
sāyakaiḥ tamobhūte antarikṣe
tatra kiñcit bhūtam na vyāpatat vai
22. Then Karṇa, a warrior skilled in swift and varied weaponry, covered all directions with a hail of arrows. Yet, no being could be seen moving there in the sky, which had become dark due to his shafts.
न चाददानो न च संदधानो न चेषुधी स्पृशमानः कराग्रैः ।
अदृश्यद्वै लाघवात्सूतपुत्रः सर्वं बाणैश्छादयानोऽन्तरिक्षम् ॥२३॥
23. na cādadāno na ca saṁdadhāno; na ceṣudhī spṛśamānaḥ karāgraiḥ ,
adṛśyadvai lāghavātsūtaputraḥ; sarvaṁ bāṇaiśchādayāno'ntarikṣam.
23. na ca ādadhānaḥ na ca sandadhānaḥ
na ca iṣudhī spṛśamānaḥ karāgraiḥ
adṛśyat vai lāghavāt sūtaputraḥ
sarvam bāṇaiḥ chādayānaḥ antarikṣam
23. ca na ādadhānaḥ,
ca na sandadhānaḥ,
ca na karāgraiḥ iṣudhī spṛśamānaḥ,
sūtaputraḥ lāghavāt adṛśyat vai sarvam antarikṣam bāṇaiḥ chādayānaḥ (āsīt)
23. Neither seen taking, nor notching arrows, nor even touching his quivers with his fingertips, the son of the charioteer (Karṇa) indeed appeared (manifested his presence) through his swiftness, covering the entire sky with arrows.
ततो मायां विहितामन्तरिक्षे घोरां भीमां दारुणां राक्षसेन ।
संपश्यामो लोहिताभ्रप्रकाशां देदीप्यन्तीमग्निशिखामिवोग्राम् ॥२४॥
24. tato māyāṁ vihitāmantarikṣe; ghorāṁ bhīmāṁ dāruṇāṁ rākṣasena ,
saṁpaśyāmo lohitābhraprakāśāṁ; dedīpyantīmagniśikhāmivogrām.
24. tataḥ māyām vihitām antarikṣe
ghorām bhīmām dāruṇām rākṣasena
sampasyāmaḥ lohitābhraprakāśām
dedīpyantīm agniśikhām iva ugrām
24. tataḥ antarikṣe rākṣasena vihitām
ghorām bhīmām dāruṇām
lohitābhraprakāśām ugrām agniśikhām
iva dedīpyantīm māyām sampasyāmaḥ
24. Then we saw the illusion (māyā) that was created in the sky by the demon - a terrible, dreadful, and fierce manifestation, shining like a crimson cloud and blazing intensely like a formidable flame.
ततस्तस्या विद्युतः प्रादुरासन्नुल्काश्चापि ज्वलिताः कौरवेन्द्र ।

25. Then, O chief of the Kauravas, flashes of lightning appeared, and also blazing meteors. And another exceedingly terrible roar arose, from thousands of sounding drums.

26. Then, arrows with golden shafts, spears, lances, maces, and various weapons rained down. Also, axes, oil-polished swords, *paṭṭiśa* darts with blazing tips, and javelins (tomara) rained down.
मयूखिनः परिघा लोहबद्धा गदाश्चित्राः शितधाराश्च शूलाः ।
गुर्व्यो गदा हेमपट्टावनद्धाः शतघ्न्यश्च प्रादुरासन्समन्तात् ॥२७॥

27. Spiked (mayūkhin) iron clubs (parigha), iron-bound and ornate maces, and sharp-edged pikes (śūla); also heavy maces covered with golden plates, and *śataghnī* weapons appeared from all sides.
महाशिलाश्चापतंस्तत्र तत्र सहस्रशः साशनयः सवज्राः ।
चक्राणि चानेकशतक्षुराणि प्रादुर्बभूवुर्ज्वलनप्रभाणि ॥२८॥

28. And huge boulders, accompanied by thunderbolts and *vajra* weapons, fell here and there by the thousands. Also, discs (cakra) with innumerable sharp edges, shining with fiery radiance, appeared.
तां शक्तिपाषाणपरश्वधानां प्रासासिवज्राशनिमुद्गराणाम् ।
वृष्टिं विशालां ज्वलितां पतन्तीं कर्णः शरौघैर्न शशाक हन्तुम् ॥२९॥
29. tāṁ śaktipāṣāṇaparaśvadhānāṁ; prāsāsivajrāśanimudgarāṇām ,
vṛṣṭiṁ viśālāṁ jvalitāṁ patantīṁ; karṇaḥ śaraughairna śaśāka hantum.

29. Karṇa was unable to counteract that vast, blazing, falling shower of javelins (śakti), stones, axes, lances, swords, thunderbolts, and hammers with his torrents of arrows.
शराहतानां पततां हयानां वज्राहतानां पततां गजानाम् ।
शिलाहतानां च महारथानां महान्निनादः पततां बभूव ॥३०॥
30. śarāhatānāṁ patatāṁ hayānāṁ; vajrāhatānāṁ patatāṁ gajānām ,

30. A mighty roar arose from the falling horses, struck by arrows, from the falling elephants, struck as if by thunderbolts, and from the falling great chariots, struck by stones.

दौर्योधनं तद्बलमार्तरूपमावर्तमानं ददृशे भ्रमन्तम् ॥३१॥

31. Duryodhana's army, looking distressed, retreating, and wandering in confusion, struck on all sides by Ghatotkaca with a barrage of very terrible and diverse weapons, was seen.
हाहाकृतं संपरिवर्तमानं संलीयमानं च विषण्णरूपम् ।
ते त्वार्यभावात्पुरुषप्रवीराः पराङ्मुखा न बभूवुस्तदानीम् ॥३२॥
32. hāhākṛtaṁ saṁparivartamānaṁ; saṁlīyamānaṁ ca viṣaṇṇarūpam ,

32. The army (was seen) crying "hāhā," writhing about, shrinking back, and having a dejected appearance; but those foremost heroes, who were truly men (puruṣa), due to their noble (ārya) disposition, did not turn their backs then.
तां राक्षसीं घोरतरां सुभीमां वृष्टिं महाशस्त्रमयीं पतन्तीम् ।
दृष्ट्वा बलौघांश्च निपात्यमानान्महद्भयं तव पुत्रान्विवेश ॥३३॥
33. tāṁ rākṣasīṁ ghoratarāṁ subhīmāṁ; vṛṣṭiṁ mahāśastramayīṁ patantīm ,

33. Seeing that most terrible, exceedingly dreadful, demonic shower consisting of great weapons falling, and observing their numerous warriors being struck down, great fear permeated your sons.
शिवाश्च वैश्वानरदीप्तजिह्वाः सुभीमनादाः शतशो नदन्त्यः ।
रक्षोगणान्नर्दतश्चाभिवीक्ष्य नरेन्द्रयोधा व्यथिता बभूवुः ॥३४॥

34. Seeing hundreds of she-jackals howling with tongues blazing like fire and uttering exceedingly dreadful roars, and observing the hosts of Rākṣasas also roaring, the king's warriors became greatly distressed.
ते दीप्तजिह्वाननतीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रा विभीषणाः शैलनिकाशकायाः ।
नभोगताः शक्तिविषक्तहस्ता मेघा व्यमुञ्चन्निव वृष्टिमार्गम् ॥३५॥
35. te dīptajihvānanatīkṣṇadaṁṣṭrā; vibhīṣaṇāḥ śailanikāśakāyāḥ ,
nabhogatāḥ śaktiviṣaktahastā; meghā vyamuñcanniva vṛṣṭimārgam.

35. Those terrifying beings, with blazing tongues, mouths, and sharp fangs, and bodies resembling mountains, having ascended into the sky with spears (śakti) clutched in their hands, seemed like clouds unleashing a torrent of rain.
तैराहतास्ते शरशक्तिशूलैर्गदाभिरुग्रैः परिघैश्च दीप्तैः ।
वज्रैः पिनाकैरशनिप्रहारैश्चक्रैः शतघ्न्युन्मथिताश्च पेतुः ॥३६॥
36. tairāhatāste śaraśaktiśūlai;rgadābhirugraiḥ parighaiśca dīptaiḥ ,
vajraiḥ pinākairaśaniprahārai;ścakraiḥ śataghnyunmathitāśca petuḥ.

36. Struck by those (Rākṣasas) with arrows, spears (śakti), lances, fierce maces, and blazing iron clubs, as well as by thunderbolts, Pināka weapons, thunderbolt-like blows, and discus weapons, and crushed by Śataghnīs, they (the warriors) fell.
हुडा भुशुण्ड्योऽश्मगुडाः शतघ्न्यः स्थूणाश्च कार्ष्णायसपट्टनद्धाः ।
अवाकिरंस्तव पुत्रस्य सैन्यं तथा रौद्रं कश्मलं प्रादुरासीत् ॥३७॥
37. huḍā bhuśuṇḍyo'śmaguḍāḥ śataghnyaḥ; sthūṇāśca kārṣṇāyasapaṭṭanaddhāḥ ,
avākiraṁstava putrasya sainyaṁ; tathā raudraṁ kaśmalaṁ prādurāsīt.

37. Javelins, maces, stone projectiles, 'hundred-killers', and pillars reinforced with iron plates rained down upon your son's army. Consequently, a terrible confusion arose.
निष्कीर्णान्त्रा विहतैरुत्तमाङ्गैः संभग्नाङ्गाः शेरते तत्र शूराः ।
भिन्ना हयाः कुञ्जराश्चावभग्नाः संचूर्णिताश्चैव रथाः शिलाभिः ॥३८॥
38. niṣkīrṇāntrā vihatairuttamāṅgaiḥ; saṁbhagnāṅgāḥ śerate tatra śūrāḥ ,
bhinnā hayāḥ kuñjarāścāvabhagnāḥ; saṁcūrṇitāścaiva rathāḥ śilābhiḥ.
38. niṣkīrṇāntrāḥ vihataiḥ uttamāṅgaiḥ
saṃbhagnāṅgāḥ śerate tatra śūrāḥ
bhinnāḥ hayāḥ kuñjarāḥ ca avabhagnāḥ
saṃcūrṇitāḥ ca eva rathāḥ śilābhiḥ
38. tatra niṣkīrṇāntrāḥ vihataiḥ uttamāṅgaiḥ saṃbhagnāṅgāḥ śūrāḥ śerate.
hayāḥ bhinnāḥ,
kuñjarāḥ ca avabhagnāḥ,
rathāḥ ca eva śilābhiḥ saṃcūrṇitāḥ.
38. There, heroes lay with their intestines expelled, heads crushed, and limbs broken. Horses were split apart, elephants were shattered, and chariots were pulverized by rocks.
एवं महच्छस्त्रवर्षं सृजन्तस्ते यातुधाना भुवि घोररूपाः ।
मायाः सृष्टास्तत्र घटोत्कचेन नामुञ्चन्वै याचमानं न भीतम् ॥३९॥
39. evaṁ mahacchastravarṣaṁ sṛjanta;ste yātudhānā bhuvi ghorarūpāḥ ,
māyāḥ sṛṣṭāstatra ghaṭotkacena; nāmuñcanvai yācamānaṁ na bhītam.

39. Thus, those dreadful-looking demons (yātudhāna), showering a great rain of weapons on the ground, did not spare those who begged for mercy nor those who were afraid, even when illusions (māyā) were created there by Ghaṭotkaca.
तस्मिन्घोरे कुरुवीरावमर्दे कालोत्सृष्टे क्षत्रियाणामभावे ।
ते वै भग्नाः सहसा व्यद्रवन्त प्राक्रोशन्तः कौरवाः सर्व एव ॥४०॥
40. tasminghore kuruvīrāvamarde; kālotsṛṣṭe kṣatriyāṇāmabhāve ,
te vai bhagnāḥ sahasā vyadravanta; prākrośantaḥ kauravāḥ sarva eva.

40. During that terrible destruction of Kuru heroes (kuru-vīra-avamarda), decreed by time (kāla), and amidst the absence of Kṣatriyas, all those Kauravas, broken and shattered, suddenly fled, crying out.
पलायध्वं कुरवो नैतदस्ति सेन्द्रा देवा घ्नन्ति नः पाण्डवार्थे ।
तथा तेषां मज्जतां भारतानां न स्म द्वीपस्तत्र कश्चिद्बभूव ॥४१॥
41. palāyadhvaṁ kuravo naitadasti; sendrā devā ghnanti naḥ pāṇḍavārthe ,
tathā teṣāṁ majjatāṁ bhāratānāṁ; na sma dvīpastatra kaścidbabhūva.

41. Flee, O Kurus! This cannot continue. The gods, with Indra himself, are striking us down for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas. Thus, for those Bhāratas who were sinking, there was no refuge (dvīpa) whatsoever.
तस्मिन्संक्रन्दे तुमुले वर्तमाने सैन्ये भग्ने लीयमाने कुरूणाम् ।
अनीकानां प्रविभागेऽप्रकाशे न ज्ञायन्ते कुरवो नेतरे वा ॥४२॥
42. tasminsaṁkrande tumule vartamāne; sainye bhagne līyamāne kurūṇām ,
anīkānāṁ pravibhāge'prakāśe; na jñāyante kuravo netare vā.

42. As that fierce tumult (saṃkranda) raged and the army of the Kurus was routed and disintegrated, amidst the indiscernible division of the troops, neither the Kurus nor anyone else could be distinguished.
निर्मर्यादे विद्रवे घोररूपे सर्वा दिशः प्रेक्षमाणाः स्म शून्याः ।
तां शस्त्रवृष्टिमुरसा गाहमानं कर्णं चैकं तत्र राजन्नपश्यम् ॥४३॥
43. nirmaryāde vidrave ghorarūpe; sarvā diśaḥ prekṣamāṇāḥ sma śūnyāḥ ,
tāṁ śastravṛṣṭimurasā gāhamānaṁ; karṇaṁ caikaṁ tatra rājannapaśyam.

43. As the terrible, unrestrained rout unfolded, we looked in all directions and saw them empty. And there, O King, I beheld Karṇa alone, boldly entering that rain of weapons with his chest.
ततो बाणैरावृणोदन्तरिक्षं दिव्यां मायां योधयन्राक्षसस्य ।
ह्रीमान्कुर्वन्दुष्करमार्यकर्म नैवामुह्यत्संयुगे सूतपुत्रः ॥४४॥
44. tato bāṇairāvṛṇodantarikṣaṁ; divyāṁ māyāṁ yodhayanrākṣasasya ,
hrīmānkurvanduṣkaramāryakarma; naivāmuhyatsaṁyuge sūtaputraḥ.

divyām māyām yodhayat rākṣasasya
hrīmān kurvan duṣkaram ārya-karma
na eva amuhyat saṃyuge sūtaputraḥ
44. Then, with his arrows, he covered the sky, engaging in combat with the demon's divine illusion (māyā). The conscientious son of the charioteer (sūtaputra), performing a difficult but noble deed (karma), remained entirely unperplexed in that battle (saṃyuga).
ततो भीताः समुदैक्षन्त कर्णं राजन्सर्वे सैन्धवा बाह्लिकाश्च ।
असंमोहं पूजयन्तोऽस्य संख्ये संपश्यन्तो विजयं राक्षसस्य ॥४५॥
45. tato bhītāḥ samudaikṣanta karṇaṁ; rājansarve saindhavā bāhlikāśca ,
asaṁmohaṁ pūjayanto'sya saṁkhye; saṁpaśyanto vijayaṁ rākṣasasya.

45. O King, then all the Saindhavas and Bāhlīkas, terrified, looked towards Karṇa. They honored his unwavering resolve in the conflict, while also witnessing the Rākṣasa's victory.
तेनोत्सृष्टा चक्रयुक्ता शतघ्नी समं सर्वांश्चतुरोऽश्वाञ्जघान ।
ते जानुभिर्जगतीमन्वपद्यन्गतासवो निर्दशनाक्षिजिह्वाः ॥४६॥
46. tenotsṛṣṭā cakrayuktā śataghnī; samaṁ sarvāṁścaturo'śvāñjaghāna ,

samam sarvān caturaḥ aśvān
jaghāna te gatāsavaḥ nirdasanākṣijihvāḥ
jānubhiḥ jagatīm anvapadyan
46. The cakra-equipped śataghnī weapon, released by him (the Rākṣasa), struck down all four horses simultaneously. Lifeless, those horses fell to the ground on their knees, with their teeth, eyes, and tongues destroyed.
ततो हताश्वादवरुह्य वाहादन्तर्मनाः कुरुषु प्राद्रवत्सु ।
दिव्ये चास्त्रे मायया वध्यमाने नैवामुह्यच्चिन्तयन्प्राप्तकालम् ॥४७॥
47. tato hatāśvādavaruhya vāhā;dantarmanāḥ kuruṣu prādravatsu ,
divye cāstre māyayā vadhyamāne; naivāmuhyaccintayanprāptakālam.

47. Then, dismounting from his chariot after its horses were slain, and even as the Kurus were fleeing and his divine weapon was being countered by an illusion (māyā), he remained undisturbed, not bewildered at all, and pondered what was appropriate for that moment.
ततोऽब्रुवन्कुरवः सर्व एव कर्णं दृष्ट्वा घोररूपां च मायाम् ।
शक्त्या रक्षो जहि कर्णाद्य तूर्णं नश्यन्त्येते कुरवो धार्तराष्ट्राः ॥४८॥
48. tato'bruvankuravaḥ sarva eva; karṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā ghorarūpāṁ ca māyām ,
śaktyā rakṣo jahi karṇādya tūrṇaṁ; naśyantyete kuravo dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ.
48. tataḥ abruvan kuravaḥ sarve eva
karṇam dṛṣṭvā ghorarūpām ca māyām
śaktyā rakṣaḥ jahi karṇa adya tūrṇam
naśyanti ete kuravaḥ dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ
48. tataḥ sarve eva kuravaḥ karṇam ca ghorarūpām māyām dṛṣṭvā abruvan: "karṇa adya śaktyā rakṣaḥ tūrṇam jahi! ete dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ kuravaḥ naśyanti.
"
48. Then, all the Kurus, seeing Karṇa and the terrifying form of the illusion (māyā), exclaimed: "O Karṇa, quickly kill this Rākṣasa with your power (śakti) today! Otherwise, these Dhārtarāṣṭra Kurus will surely perish!"
करिष्यतः किं च नो भीमपार्थौ तपन्तमेनं जहि रक्षो निशीथे ।
यो नः संग्रामाद्घोररूपाद्विमुच्येत्स नः पार्थान्समरे योधयेत ॥४९॥
49. kariṣyataḥ kiṁ ca no bhīmapārthau; tapantamenaṁ jahi rakṣo niśīthe ,
yo naḥ saṁgrāmādghorarūpādvimucye;tsa naḥ pārthānsamare yodhayeta.

49. What, moreover, can Bhima and Arjuna do for us? Kill this tormenting demon in the middle of the night! If he were to escape from a dreadful battle, he would then cause us to fight the Pārthas in battle.
तस्मादेनं राक्षसं घोररूपं जहि शक्त्या दत्तया वासवेन ।
मा कौरवाः सर्व एवेन्द्रकल्पा रात्रीमुखे कर्ण नेशुः सयोधाः ॥५०॥
50. tasmādenaṁ rākṣasaṁ ghorarūpaṁ; jahi śaktyā dattayā vāsavena ,
mā kauravāḥ sarva evendrakalpā; rātrīmukhe karṇa neśuḥ sayodhāḥ.

50. Therefore, kill this dreadful-looking demon with the powerful spear (śakti) given by Vāsava (Indra)! O Karna, let not all the Kauravas, mighty like Indra, perish with their warriors at the onset of night!
स वध्यमानो रक्षसा वै निशीथे दृष्ट्वा राजन्नश्यमानं बलं च ।
महच्च श्रुत्वा निनदं कौरवाणां मतिं दध्रे शक्तिमोक्षाय कर्णः ॥५१॥
51. sa vadhyamāno rakṣasā vai niśīthe; dṛṣṭvā rājannaśyamānaṁ balaṁ ca ,
mahacca śrutvā ninadaṁ kauravāṇāṁ; matiṁ dadhre śaktimokṣāya karṇaḥ.

51. O King, Karna, being hard-pressed by the demon in the middle of the night, and having seen his army perishing, and having heard the great cry of the Kauravas, then resolved to release the spear (śakti) for the demon's destruction.
स वै क्रुद्धः सिंह इवात्यमर्षी नामर्षयत्प्रतिघातं रणे तम् ।
शक्तिं श्रेष्ठां वैजयन्तीमसह्यां समाददे तस्य वधं चिकीर्षन् ॥५२॥
52. sa vai kruddhaḥ siṁha ivātyamarṣī; nāmarṣayatpratighātaṁ raṇe tam ,
śaktiṁ śreṣṭhāṁ vaijayantīmasahyāṁ; samādade tasya vadhaṁ cikīrṣan.
52. saḥ vai kruddhaḥ siṃhaḥ iva atyamarṣī
na amarṣayat pratighātam raṇe
tam śaktim śreṣṭhām vaijayantīm
asahyām samādade tasya vadham cikīrṣan

52. He (Karna), indeed enraged and exceedingly furious like a lion, no longer tolerated his (the demon's) counter-attack in battle. Desiring to kill him, he then took up the supreme, irresistible spear (śakti) named Vaijayantī.
यासौ राजन्निहिता वर्षपूगान्वधायाजौ सत्कृता फल्गुनस्य ।
यां वै प्रादात्सूतपुत्राय शक्रः शक्तिं श्रेष्ठां कुण्डलाभ्यां निमाय ॥५३॥
53. yāsau rājannihitā varṣapūgā;nvadhāyājau satkṛtā phalgunasya ,
yāṁ vai prādātsūtaputrāya śakraḥ; śaktiṁ śreṣṭhāṁ kuṇḍalābhyāṁ nimāya.

53. O King, that famous spear (śakti), which had been preserved for many years for the purpose of slaying Arjuna in battle, and which Indra had indeed given to Karṇa, the son of the charioteer, in exchange for his earrings...
तां वै शक्तिं लेलिहानां प्रदीप्तां पाशैर्युक्तामन्तकस्येव रात्रिम् ।
मृत्योः स्वसारं ज्वलितामिवोल्कां वैकर्तनः प्राहिणोद्राक्षसाय ॥५४॥
54. tāṁ vai śaktiṁ lelihānāṁ pradīptāṁ; pāśairyuktāmantakasyeva rātrim ,
mṛtyoḥ svasāraṁ jvalitāmivolkāṁ; vaikartanaḥ prāhiṇodrākṣasāya.
54. tām vai śaktim lelihānām pradīptām
pāśaiḥ yuktām antakasya iva rātrim
| mṛtyoḥ svasāram jvalitām iva
ulkām vaikartanaḥ prāhiṇot rākṣasāya

54. That very spear (śakti), licking (flames), blazing brightly, endowed with snares like the night of the Destroyer (Antaka), like Death's (Mṛtyu) own sister, a burning meteor (ulkā) – Karṇa (Vaikartana) hurled it at the demon.
तामुत्तमां परकायापहन्त्रीं दृष्ट्वा सौतेर्बाहुसंस्थां ज्वलन्तीम् ।
भीतं रक्षो विप्रदुद्राव राजन्कृत्वात्मानं विन्ध्यपादप्रमाणम् ॥५५॥
55. tāmuttamāṁ parakāyāpahantrīṁ; dṛṣṭvā sauterbāhusaṁsthāṁ jvalantīm ,
bhītaṁ rakṣo vipradudrāva rāja;nkṛtvātmānaṁ vindhyapādapramāṇam.
55. tām uttamām parakāyāpahantrīm dṛṣṭvā
sauteḥ bāhusamsthām jvalantīm
| bhītam rakṣaḥ vipradudrāva rājan
kṛtvā ātmānam vindhyapādapramāṇam

55. O King, seeing that supreme (weapon), the destroyer of others' bodies, blazing while resting on the arm of Karna (sauta), the terrified demon fled, making himself as large as the foot of the Vindhya mountain.
दृष्ट्वा शक्तिं कर्णबाह्वन्तरस्थां नेदुर्भूतान्यन्तरिक्षे नरेन्द्र ।
ववुर्वातास्तुमुलाश्चापि राजन्सनिर्घाता चाशनिर्गां जगाम ॥५६॥
56. dṛṣṭvā śaktiṁ karṇabāhvantarasthāṁ; nedurbhūtānyantarikṣe narendra ,
vavurvātāstumulāścāpi rāja;nsanirghātā cāśanirgāṁ jagāma.
56. dṛṣṭvā śaktim karṇabāhvantarasthām
neduḥ bhūtāni antarikṣe narendra
| vavur vātāḥ tumulāḥ ca api
rājan sanirghātā ca aśaniḥ gām jagāma

56. O lord of men (narendra), upon seeing the spear (śakti) resting on Karṇa's arm, the beings in the sky roared. Violent winds blew, O King, and lightning, accompanied by thunder, struck the earth.
सा तां मायां भस्म कृत्वा ज्वलन्ती भित्त्वा गाढं हृदयं राक्षसस्य ।
ऊर्ध्वं ययौ दीप्यमाना निशायां नक्षत्राणामन्तराण्याविशन्ती ॥५७॥
57. sā tāṁ māyāṁ bhasma kṛtvā jvalantī; bhittvā gāḍhaṁ hṛdayaṁ rākṣasasya ,
ūrdhvaṁ yayau dīpyamānā niśāyāṁ; nakṣatrāṇāmantarāṇyāviśantī.
57. sā tām māyām bhasma kṛtvā jvalantī
bhittvā gāḍham hṛdayam rākṣasasya
| ūrdhvam yayau dīpyamānā niśāyām
nakṣatrāṇām antarāṇi āviśantī
57. sā jvalantī tām māyām bhasma kṛtvā,
rākṣasasya gāḍham hṛdayam bhittvā,
niśāyām dīpyamānā,
nakṣatrāṇām antarāṇi āviśantī,
ūrdhvam yayau.
57. She, blazing brightly, having reduced that illusion (māyā) to ashes, and having deeply pierced the demon's heart, ascended, shining radiantly, entering the spaces among the stars in the night.
युद्ध्वा चित्रैर्विविधैः शस्त्रपूगैर्दिव्यैर्वीरो मानुषै राक्षसैश्च ।
नदन्नादान्विविधान्भैरवांश्च प्राणानिष्टांस्त्याजितः शक्रशक्त्या ॥५८॥
58. yuddhvā citrairvividhaiḥ śastrapūgai;rdivyairvīro mānuṣai rākṣasaiśca ,
nadannādānvividhānbhairavāṁśca; prāṇāniṣṭāṁstyājitaḥ śakraśaktyā.
58. yuddhvā citraiḥ vividhaiḥ śastrapūgaiḥ
divyaiḥ vīraḥ mānuṣaiḥ rākṣasaiḥ
ca | nadan nādān vividhān bhairavān
ca prāṇān iṣṭān tyājitaḥ śakraśaktyā
58. vīraḥ citraiḥ vividhaiḥ divyaiḥ mānuṣaiḥ rākṣasaiḥ ca śastrapūgaiḥ yuddhvā,
vividhān bhairavān ca nādān nadan,
śakraśaktyā iṣṭān prāṇān tyājitaḥ.
58. Having fought using various and diverse arrays of divine, human, and demonic weapons, and having roared diverse and terrible cries, the hero was then deprived of his dear life by the power (śakti) of Indra.
इदं चान्यच्चित्रमाश्चर्यरूपं चकारासौ कर्म शत्रुक्षयाय ।
तस्मिन्काले शक्तिनिर्भिन्नमर्मा बभौ राजन्मेघशैलप्रकाशः ॥५९॥
59. idaṁ cānyaccitramāścaryarūpaṁ; cakārāsau karma śatrukṣayāya ,
tasminkāle śaktinirbhinnamarmā; babhau rājanmeghaśailaprakāśaḥ.
59. idam ca anyat ca citram āścaryarūpam
cakāra asau karma śatrukṣayāya

59. rājan,
asau ca idam ca anyat citram āścaryarūpam karma śatrukṣayāya cakāra.

59. And this was another wondrous and amazing deed (karma) that demon performed for the destruction of the enemy. At that moment, O king, with his vital parts pierced by the divine power (śakti), he appeared radiant like a cloud-mountain.
ततोऽन्तरिक्षादपतद्गतासुः स राक्षसेन्द्रो भुवि भिन्नदेहः ।
अवाक्शिराः स्तब्धगात्रो विजिह्वो घटोत्कचो महदास्थाय रूपम् ॥६०॥
60. tato'ntarikṣādapatadgatāsuḥ; sa rākṣasendro bhuvi bhinnadehaḥ ,
avākśirāḥ stabdhagātro vijihvo; ghaṭotkaco mahadāsthāya rūpam.
60. tataḥ antarikṣāt apatat gatāsuḥ
saḥ rākṣasendraḥ bhuvi bhinnadehaḥ
| avākśirāḥ stabdhagātraḥ vijihvaḥ
ghaṭotkacaḥ mahat āsthāya rūpam
60. tataḥ,
saḥ rākṣasendraḥ ghaṭotkacaḥ mahat rūpam āsthāya,
gatāsuḥ bhinnadehaḥ avākśirāḥ stabdhagātraḥ vijihvaḥ (san),
antarikṣāt bhuvi apatat.
60. Then, that king of demons, Ghaṭotkaca, having assumed a gigantic form, fell from the sky to the earth - lifeless, with a shattered body, head downwards, with stiff limbs, and tongueless.
स तद्रूपं भैरवं भीमकर्मा भीमं कृत्वा भैमसेनिः पपात ।
हतोऽप्येवं तव सैन्येकदेशमपोथयत्कौरवान्भीषयाणः ॥६१॥
61. sa tadrūpaṁ bhairavaṁ bhīmakarmā; bhīmaṁ kṛtvā bhaimaseniḥ papāta ,
hato'pyevaṁ tava sainyekadeśa;mapothayatkauravānbhīṣayāṇaḥ.
61. saḥ tat rūpam bhairavam bhīmakarmā
bhīmam kṛtvā bhaimaseniḥ papāta
| hataḥ api evam tava sainya
ekadeśam apothayat kauravān bhīṣayāṇaḥ
61. bhaimaseniḥ saḥ tat bhairavam
bhīmakarmā bhīmam rūpam kṛtvā papāta
hataḥ api evam tava sainya ekadeśam
kauravān bhīṣayāṇaḥ apothayat
61. Having assumed that terrifying form, dreadful in its deeds, the terrible son of Bhīmasena (Ghaṭotkaca) fell (died). Even as he was killed, he continued to destroy a portion of your army, striking terror into the Kauravas.
ततो मिश्राः प्राणदन्सिंहनादैर्भेर्यः शङ्खा मुरजाश्चानकाश्च ।
दग्धां मायां निहतं राक्षसं च दृष्ट्वा हृष्टाः प्राणदन्कौरवेयाः ॥६२॥
62. tato miśrāḥ prāṇadansiṁhanādai;rbheryaḥ śaṅkhā murajāścānakāśca ,
dagdhāṁ māyāṁ nihataṁ rākṣasaṁ ca; dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭāḥ prāṇadankauraveyāḥ.
62. tataḥ miśrāḥ prāṇadan siṃhanādaiḥ
bheryaḥ śaṅkhāḥ murajāḥ ca ānakāḥ ca
| dagdhām māyām nihatam rākṣasam ca
dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭāḥ prāṇadan kauraveyāḥ
62. tataḥ miśrāḥ bheryaḥ śaṅkhāḥ murajāḥ
ca ānakāḥ ca siṃhanādaiḥ prāṇadan
kauraveyāḥ dagdhām māyām ca nihatam
rākṣasam ca dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭāḥ prāṇadan
62. Then, a mixture of sounds arose: drums, conches, murajas, and ānakas roared, accompanied by lion-like cries. Seeing the illusion (māyā) destroyed and the rākṣasa killed, the delighted Kauravas also roared (in triumph).
ततः कर्णः कुरुभिः पूज्यमानो यथा शक्रो वृत्रवधे मरुद्भिः ।
अन्वारूढस्तव पुत्रं रथस्थं हृष्टश्चापि प्राविशत्स्वं स सैन्यम् ॥६३॥
63. tataḥ karṇaḥ kurubhiḥ pūjyamāno; yathā śakro vṛtravadhe marudbhiḥ ,
anvārūḍhastava putraṁ rathasthaṁ; hṛṣṭaścāpi prāviśatsvaṁ sa sainyam.
63. tataḥ karṇaḥ kurubhiḥ pūjyamānaḥ
yathā śakraḥ vṛtravadhe marudbhiḥ |
anvārūḍhaḥ tava putram rathastham

63. Then Karṇa, being honored by the Kurus just as Indra (Śakra) was honored by the Maruts after slaying Vṛtra, delightedly mounted with your son (Duryodhana) who was in a chariot, and thus entered his own army.
