संजय उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वार्जुनं राजा त्रिभिर्मर्मातिगैः शरैः ।
प्रत्यविध्यन्महावेगैश्चतुर्भिश्चतुरो हयान् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evamuktvārjunaṁ rājā tribhirmarmātigaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
pratyavidhyanmahāvegaiścaturbhiścaturo hayān.

1. Saṃjaya said: Having thus spoken to Arjuna, the king struck him with three arrows that penetrated vital spots, and with four exceedingly swift arrows, he struck his four horses.
वासुदेवं च दशभिः प्रत्यविध्यत्स्तनान्तरे ।
प्रतोदं चास्य भल्लेन छित्त्वा भूमावपातयत् ॥२॥
2. vāsudevaṁ ca daśabhiḥ pratyavidhyatstanāntare ,
pratodaṁ cāsya bhallena chittvā bhūmāvapātayat.
2. vāsudevam ca daśabhiḥ prati avidhyat stana antare
pratodam ca asya bhallena chittvā bhūmau apātayat
2. ca daśabhiḥ (śaraiḥ) vāsudevam stanāntare pratyavidhyat,

2. He also pierced Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) with ten (arrows) in the chest; and, cutting his goad with a broad-headed arrow, he caused it to fall to the ground.
तं चतुर्दशभिः पार्थश्चित्रपुङ्खैः शिलाशितैः ।
अविध्यत्तूर्णमव्यग्रस्तेऽस्याभ्रश्यन्त वर्मणः ॥३॥
3. taṁ caturdaśabhiḥ pārthaścitrapuṅkhaiḥ śilāśitaiḥ ,
avidhyattūrṇamavyagraste'syābhraśyanta varmaṇaḥ.
3. taṃ caturdaśabhiḥ pārthaḥ citrapuṅkhaiḥ śilāśitaiḥ
avidhyat tūrṇam avyagraḥ te asya abhraśyanta varmaṇaḥ

3. Arjuna, unagitated, quickly struck him with fourteen arrows, sharpened on stone and adorned with colorful shafts. However, those arrows merely slipped off his armor.
तेषां वैफल्यमालोक्य पुनर्नव च पञ्च च ।
प्राहिणोन्निशितान्बाणांस्ते चाभ्रश्यन्त वर्मणः ॥४॥
4. teṣāṁ vaiphalyamālokya punarnava ca pañca ca ,
prāhiṇonniśitānbāṇāṁste cābhraśyanta varmaṇaḥ.
4. teṣām vaiphalyam ālokya punaḥ nava ca pañca ca
prāhiṇot niśitān bāṇān te ca abhraśyanta varmaṇaḥ

4. Perceiving their uselessness, he again dispatched fourteen sharp arrows. But those also slipped off the armor.
अष्टाविंशत्तु तान्बाणानस्तान्विप्रेक्ष्य निष्फलान् ।
अब्रवीत्परवीरघ्नः कृष्णोऽर्जुनमिदं वचः ॥५॥
5. aṣṭāviṁśattu tānbāṇānastānviprekṣya niṣphalān ,
abravītparavīraghnaḥ kṛṣṇo'rjunamidaṁ vacaḥ.
5. aṣṭāviṃśat tu tān bāṇān astān viprekṣya niṣphalān
abravīt paravīraghnaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ arjunam idam vacaḥ
5. paravīraghnaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tān astān niṣphalān aṣṭāviṃśat
bāṇān viprekṣya tu idam vacaḥ arjunam abravīt
5. But observing those twenty-eight shot arrows to be fruitless, Kṛṣṇa (kṛṣṇa), the slayer of enemy heroes, spoke these words to Arjuna.
अदृष्टपूर्वं पश्यामि शिलानामिव सर्पणम् ।
त्वया संप्रेषिताः पार्थ नार्थं कुर्वन्ति पत्रिणः ॥६॥
6. adṛṣṭapūrvaṁ paśyāmi śilānāmiva sarpaṇam ,
tvayā saṁpreṣitāḥ pārtha nārthaṁ kurvanti patriṇaḥ.
6. adṛṣṭapūrvam paśyāmi śilānām iva sarpaṇam tvayā
sampreṣitāḥ pārtha na artham kurvanti patriṇaḥ
6. pārtha adṛṣṭapūrvam śilānām iva sarpaṇam paśyāmi
tvayā sampreṣitāḥ patriṇaḥ artham na kurvanti
6. O Pārtha, I see something unprecedented: your feathered arrows (patriṇaḥ), sent by you, are sliding off as if they were stones, achieving no purpose.
कच्चिद्गाण्डीवतः प्राणास्तथैव भरतर्षभ ।
मुष्टिश्च ते यथापूर्वं भुजयोश्च बलं तव ॥७॥
7. kaccidgāṇḍīvataḥ prāṇāstathaiva bharatarṣabha ,
muṣṭiśca te yathāpūrvaṁ bhujayośca balaṁ tava.
7. kaccit gāṇḍīvataḥ prāṇāḥ tathā eva bharatarṣabha
muṣṭiḥ ca te yathāpūrvaṃ bhujayoḥ ca balaṃ tava
7. bharatarṣabha kaccit gāṇḍīvataḥ prāṇāḥ tathā
eva te muṣṭiḥ ca bhujayoḥ balaṃ ca yathāpūrvaṃ
7. O best of Bharatas, I hope that your strength derived from the Gaṇḍīva (Arjuna's bow), your grip, and the strength of your arms are all just as they were before.
न चेद्विधेरयं कालः प्राप्तः स्यादद्य पश्चिमः ।
तव चैवास्य शत्रोश्च तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः ॥८॥
8. na cedvidherayaṁ kālaḥ prāptaḥ syādadya paścimaḥ ,
tava caivāsya śatrośca tanmamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ.
8. na cet vidheḥ ayaṃ kālaḥ prāptaḥ syāt adya paścimaḥ
tava ca eva asya śatroḥ ca tat mama ācakṣva pṛcchataḥ
8. cet ayaṃ paścimaḥ kālaḥ vidheḥ tava ca asya śatroḥ
ca adya na prāptaḥ syāt tat pṛcchataḥ mama ācakṣva
8. If this is not the final moment appointed by destiny (vidhi) that has arrived today for both you and your enemy, then please explain it to me, as I inquire.
विस्मयो मे महान्पार्थ तव दृष्ट्वा शरानिमान् ।
व्यर्थान्निपततः संख्ये दुर्योधनरथं प्रति ॥९॥
9. vismayo me mahānpārtha tava dṛṣṭvā śarānimān ,
vyarthānnipatataḥ saṁkhye duryodhanarathaṁ prati.
9. vismayaḥ me mahān pārtha tava dṛṣṭvā śarān imān
vyarthān nipatataḥ saṅkhye duryodhanaratham prati
9. pārtha tava imān vyarthān duryodhanaratham prati
saṅkhye nipatataḥ śarān dṛṣṭvā me mahān vismayaḥ
9. O Pārtha, my astonishment is great upon seeing these arrows of yours fall uselessly in battle, directed towards Duryodhana's chariot.
वज्राशनिसमा घोराः परकायावभेदिनः ।
शराः कुर्वन्ति ते नार्थं पार्थ काद्य विडम्बना ॥१०॥
10. vajrāśanisamā ghorāḥ parakāyāvabhedinaḥ ,
śarāḥ kurvanti te nārthaṁ pārtha kādya viḍambanā.
10. vajrāśanisamāḥ ghorāḥ parakāyāvabhedinaḥ śarāḥ
kurvanti te na arthaṃ pārtha kā adya viḍambanā
10. pārtha vajrāśanisamāḥ ghorāḥ parakāyāvabhedinaḥ
te śarāḥ arthaṃ na kurvanti adya kā viḍambanā
10. O Pārtha, your terrible arrows, which are like thunderbolts and lightning and pierce other bodies, are not achieving their purpose. What kind of humiliation (viḍambanā) is this today?
अर्जुन उवाच ।
द्रोणेनैषा मतिः कृष्ण धार्तराष्ट्रे निवेशिता ।
अन्ते विहितमस्त्राणामेतत्कवचधारणम् ॥११॥
11. arjuna uvāca ,
droṇenaiṣā matiḥ kṛṣṇa dhārtarāṣṭre niveśitā ,
ante vihitamastrāṇāmetatkavacadhāraṇam.
11. arjuna uvāca droṇena eṣā matiḥ kṛṣṇa dhārtarāṣṭre
niveśitā ante vihitam astrāṇām etat kavacadhāraṇam
11. kṛṣṇa,
droṇena eṣā matiḥ dhārtarāṣṭre niveśitā.
etat kavacadhāraṇam astrāṇām ante vihitam (iti arjuna uvāca).
11. Arjuna said: "O Kṛṣṇa, Droṇa has instilled this resolve (or strategy) in Duryodhana. This wearing of armor has been prescribed as a final (or ultimate) defense against weapons."
अस्मिन्नन्तर्हितं कृष्ण त्रैलोक्यमपि वर्मणि ।
एको द्रोणो हि वेदैतदहं तस्माच्च सत्तमात् ॥१२॥
12. asminnantarhitaṁ kṛṣṇa trailokyamapi varmaṇi ,
eko droṇo hi vedaitadahaṁ tasmācca sattamāt.
12. asmin antarbhitam kṛṣṇa trailokyam api varmaṇi
ekaḥ droṇaḥ hi veda etat aham tasmāt ca sattamāt
12. kṛṣṇa,
asmin varmaṇi trailokyam api antarbhitam.
ekaḥ droṇaḥ hi etat veda,
ca aham tasmāt sattamāt (veda).
12. O Kṛṣṇa, within this armor (varmaṇi), even the three worlds are contained. Indeed, only Droṇa knows this, and I have learned it from that most excellent one (Droṇa).
न शक्यमेतत्कवचं बाणैर्भेत्तुं कथंचन ।
अपि वज्रेण गोविन्द स्वयं मघवता युधि ॥१३॥
13. na śakyametatkavacaṁ bāṇairbhettuṁ kathaṁcana ,
api vajreṇa govinda svayaṁ maghavatā yudhi.
13. na śakyam etat kavacam bāṇaiḥ bhettum kathaṃcana
api vajreṇa govinda svayam maghavatā yudhi
13. govinda,
etat kavacam bāṇaiḥ kathaṃcana bhettum na śakyam.
api svayam maghavatā vajreṇa yudhi (bhettum na śakyam).
13. This armor cannot be pierced by arrows in any way. O Govinda, it cannot be pierced even by Indra himself with his thunderbolt (vajra) in battle.
जानंस्त्वमपि वै कृष्ण मां विमोहयसे कथम् ।
यद्वृत्तं त्रिषु लोकेषु यच्च केशव वर्तते ॥१४॥
14. jānaṁstvamapi vai kṛṣṇa māṁ vimohayase katham ,
yadvṛttaṁ triṣu lokeṣu yacca keśava vartate.
14. jānan tvam api vai kṛṣṇa mām vimohayase katham
yat vṛttam triṣu lokeṣu yat ca keśava vartate
14. kṛṣṇa,
keśava,
tvam api (etat) jānan katham mām vimohayase? yat triṣu lokeṣu vṛttam,
ca yat vartate (tat sarvam tvam jānāsi).
14. O Kṛṣṇa, knowing all this (jānan), why (katham) do you also (api) delude me (mām vimohayase)? For you know everything (yat vṛttam) that has occurred in the three worlds (triṣu lokeṣu) and everything (yat ca) that now exists (vartate), O Keśava.
तथा भविष्यद्यच्चैव तत्सर्वं विदितं तव ।
न त्वेवं वेद वै कश्चिद्यथा त्वं मधुसूदन ॥१५॥
15. tathā bhaviṣyadyaccaiva tatsarvaṁ viditaṁ tava ,
na tvevaṁ veda vai kaścidyathā tvaṁ madhusūdana.
15. tathā bhaviṣyat yat ca eva tat sarvam viditam tava
na tu evam veda vai kaścit yathā tvam madhusūdana
15. madhusūdana yat ca eva bhaviṣyat tathā tat sarvam
tava viditam tu kaścit evam vai yathā tvam na veda
15. And whatever will be in the future, all that is known to you. But no one else knows it as you do, O Madhusūdana.
एष दुर्योधनः कृष्ण द्रोणेन विहितामिमाम् ।
तिष्ठत्यभीतवत्संख्ये बिभ्रत्कवचधारणाम् ॥१६॥
16. eṣa duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇa droṇena vihitāmimām ,
tiṣṭhatyabhītavatsaṁkhye bibhratkavacadhāraṇām.
16. eṣaḥ duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇa droṇena vihitām imām
tiṣṭhati abhītavat saṃkhye bibhrat kavacadhāraṇām
16. kṛṣṇa eṣaḥ duryodhanaḥ droṇena vihitām imām
kavacadhāraṇām bibhrat saṃkhye abhītavat tiṣṭhati
16. O Krishna, this Duryodhana stands fearlessly in battle, wearing this armor which was arranged by Droṇa.
यत्त्वत्र विहितं कार्यं नैष तद्वेत्ति माधव ।
स्त्रीवदेष बिभर्त्येतां युक्तां कवचधारणाम् ॥१७॥
17. yattvatra vihitaṁ kāryaṁ naiṣa tadvetti mādhava ,
strīvadeṣa bibhartyetāṁ yuktāṁ kavacadhāraṇām.
17. yat tu atra vihitam kāryam na eṣaḥ tat vetti mādhava
strīvat eṣaḥ bibharti etām yuktām kavacadhāraṇām
17. mādhava tu yat kāryam atra vihitam eṣaḥ tat na vetti
eṣaḥ strīvat etām yuktām kavacadhāraṇām bibharti
17. But whatever is the prescribed duty here, O Mādhava, this one does not know that. He wears this suitable armor like a woman.
पश्य बाह्वोश्च मे वीर्यं धनुषश्च जनार्दन ।
पराजयिष्ये कौरव्यं कवचेनापि रक्षितम् ॥१८॥
18. paśya bāhvośca me vīryaṁ dhanuṣaśca janārdana ,
parājayiṣye kauravyaṁ kavacenāpi rakṣitam.
18. paśya bāhvoḥ ca me vīryam dhanuṣaḥ ca janārdana
parājayisye kauravyam kavacena api rakṣitam
18. janārdana me bāhvoḥ ca dhanuṣaḥ ca vīryam paśya
kavacena api rakṣitam kauravyam parājayisye
18. O Janārdana, behold the valor of my two arms and my bow. I will defeat the Kuru prince, even though he is protected by armor.
इदमङ्गिरसे प्रादाद्देवेशो वर्म भास्वरम् ।
पुनर्ददौ सुरपतिर्मह्यं वर्म ससंग्रहम् ॥१९॥
19. idamaṅgirase prādāddeveśo varma bhāsvaram ,
punardadau surapatirmahyaṁ varma sasaṁgraham.
19. idam aṅgirase prādāt deveśaḥ varma bhāsvaram
punaḥ dadau surapatiḥ mahyam varma sa-saṅgraham
19. deveśaḥ idam bhāsvaram varma aṅgirase prādāt
punaḥ surapatiḥ sa-saṅgraham varma mahyam dadau
19. The lord of gods gave this shining armor to Aṅgiras. Again, the lord of gods gave this armor, complete with its collection of powers, to me.
दैवं यद्यस्य वर्मैतद्ब्रह्मणा वा स्वयं कृतम् ।
नैतद्गोप्स्यति दुर्बुद्धिमद्य बाणहतं मया ॥२०॥
20. daivaṁ yadyasya varmaitadbrahmaṇā vā svayaṁ kṛtam ,
naitadgopsyati durbuddhimadya bāṇahataṁ mayā.
20. daivam yadi asya varma etat brahmaṇā vā svayam kṛtam
na etat gopsyati durbuddhim adya bāṇa-hatam mayā
20. yadi asya etat varma daivam vā brahmaṇā svayam kṛtam,
na etat durbuddhim adya mayā bāṇa-hatam gopsyati
20. Even if this armor (varman) of his is divine or was made by Brahmā himself, it will not protect this foolish person, who will be struck down by my arrows today.
संजय उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वार्जुनो बाणानभिमन्त्र्य व्यकर्षयत् ।
विकृष्यमाणांस्तेनैवं धनुर्मध्यगताञ्शरान् ।
तानस्यास्त्रेण चिच्छेद द्रौणिः सर्वास्त्रघातिना ॥२१॥
21. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evamuktvārjuno bāṇānabhimantrya vyakarṣayat ,
vikṛṣyamāṇāṁstenaivaṁ dhanurmadhyagatāñśarān ,
tānasyāstreṇa ciccheda drauṇiḥ sarvāstraghātinā.
21. saṃjaya uvāca evam uktvā arjunaḥ bāṇān
abhimantrya vyākarṣayat vikṛṣyamāṇān tena
evam dhanur-madhya-gatān śarān tān asya
astreṇa cicheda drauṇiḥ sarva-astra-ghātinā
21. saṃjaya uvāca.
arjunaḥ evam uktvā,
bāṇān abhimantrya vyākarṣayat.
tena evam vikṛṣyamāṇān dhanur-madhya-gatān tān śarān asya drauṇiḥ sarva-astra-ghātinā astreṇa cicheda.
21. Saṃjaya said: Having spoken thus, Arjuna consecrated his arrows and then began to pull them out. As he was pulling out those arrows that were fixed in his bow, Drauni (Aśvatthāman) cut them with his weapon (astra), which was capable of destroying all weapons.
तान्निकृत्तानिषून्दृष्ट्वा दूरतो ब्रह्मवादिना ।
न्यवेदयत्केशवाय विस्मितः श्वेतवाहनः ॥२२॥
22. tānnikṛttāniṣūndṛṣṭvā dūrato brahmavādinā ,
nyavedayatkeśavāya vismitaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ.
22. tān nikṛtta-iṣūn dṛṣṭvā dūrataḥ brahma-vādinā
nyavedayat keśavāya vismitaḥ śveta-vāhanaḥ
22. śveta-vāhanaḥ vismitaḥ dūrataḥ brahma-vādinā tān nikṛtta-iṣūn dṛṣṭvā keśavāya nyavedayat.
22. Having seen those arrows cut down from afar by the expert in (brahman) (brahmavādin), the astonished Śvetavāhana (Arjuna) reported it to Keśava (Krishna).
नैतदस्त्रं मया शक्यं द्विः प्रयोक्तुं जनार्दन ।
अस्त्रं मामेव हन्याद्धि पश्य त्वद्य बलं मम ॥२३॥
23. naitadastraṁ mayā śakyaṁ dviḥ prayoktuṁ janārdana ,
astraṁ māmeva hanyāddhi paśya tvadya balaṁ mama.
23. na etat astram mayā śakyam dviḥ prayoktum janārdana
astram mām eva hanyāt hi paśya tva adya balam mama
23. janārdana mayā etat astram dviḥ prayoktum na śakyam
hi astram mām eva hanyāt tva adya mama balam paśya
23. O Janardana, this weapon cannot be employed by me twice. Indeed, the weapon would kill me myself. Behold my power today.
ततो दुर्योधनः कृष्णौ नवभिर्नतपर्वभिः ।
अविध्यत रणे राजञ्शरैराशीविषोपमैः ।
भूय एवाभ्यवर्षच्च समरे कृष्णपाण्डवौ ॥२४॥
24. tato duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇau navabhirnataparvabhiḥ ,
avidhyata raṇe rājañśarairāśīviṣopamaiḥ ,
bhūya evābhyavarṣacca samare kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau.
24. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇau navabhiḥ
nataparvabhiḥ avidhyata raṇe rājan
śaraiḥ āśīviṣopamaiḥ bhūyaḥ eva
abhyavarṣat ca samare kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau
24. rājan tataḥ duryodhanaḥ raṇe kṛṣṇau
navabhiḥ nataparvabhiḥ śaraiḥ
āśīviṣopamaiḥ avidhyata ca bhūyaḥ eva
samare kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau abhyavarṣat
24. Then, O King, Duryodhana struck Krishna and Arjuna (kṛṣṇau) in battle with nine arrows that had bent joints, and with arrows resembling venomous snakes. And again, he showered Krishna and the Pandava (kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau) in that battle.
शरवर्षेण महता ततोऽहृष्यन्त तावकाः ।
चक्रुर्वादित्रनिनदान्सिंहनादरवांस्तथा ॥२५॥
25. śaravarṣeṇa mahatā tato'hṛṣyanta tāvakāḥ ,
cakrurvāditraninadānsiṁhanādaravāṁstathā.
25. śaravarṣeṇa mahatā tataḥ ahṛṣyanta tāvakāḥ
cakruḥ vāditraninadān siṃhanādaravān tathā
25. tataḥ mahatā śaravarṣeṇa tāvakāḥ ahṛṣyanta
vāditraninadān tathā siṃhanādaravān cakruḥ
25. Then, with a great shower of arrows, your warriors rejoiced. They made sounds of musical instruments and also loud roars like lions.
ततः क्रुद्धो रणे पार्थः सृक्कणी परिसंलिहन् ।
नापश्यत ततोऽस्याङ्गं यन्न स्याद्वर्मरक्षितम् ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ kruddho raṇe pārthaḥ sṛkkaṇī parisaṁlihan ,
nāpaśyata tato'syāṅgaṁ yanna syādvarmarakṣitam.
26. tataḥ kruddhaḥ raṇe pārthaḥ sṛkkaṇī parisaṃlihan na
apaśyat tataḥ asya aṅgam yat na syāt varmarakṣitam
26. tataḥ kruddhaḥ pārthaḥ raṇe sṛkkaṇī parisaṃlihan
tataḥ asya yat aṅgam varmarakṣitam na syāt na apaśyat
26. Then the enraged Partha, licking his lips in battle, did not see any part of his body that was not protected by armor.
ततोऽस्य निशितैर्बाणैः सुमुक्तैरन्तकोपमैः ।
हयांश्चकार निर्देहानुभौ च पार्ष्णिसारथी ॥२७॥
27. tato'sya niśitairbāṇaiḥ sumuktairantakopamaiḥ ,
hayāṁścakāra nirdehānubhau ca pārṣṇisārathī.
27. tataḥ asya niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ sumuktaiḥ antakopamaiḥ
hayān cakāra nirdehān ubhau ca pārṣṇisārathī
27. tataḥ niśitaiḥ sumuktaiḥ antakopamaiḥ bāṇaiḥ asya
hayān ubhau ca pārṣṇisārathī nirdehān cakāra
27. Then, with sharp, well-shot arrows resembling Antaka (Yama, the god of death), he rendered Duryodhana's horses lifeless and struck down both his charioteer and the attendant at the rear.
धनुरस्याच्छिनच्चित्रं हस्तावापं च वीर्यवान् ।
रथं च शकलीकर्तुं सव्यसाची प्रचक्रमे ॥२८॥
28. dhanurasyācchinaccitraṁ hastāvāpaṁ ca vīryavān ,

28. dhanuḥ asya acchinat citram hastāvāpam ca vīryavān
ratham ca śakalīkartum savyasācī pracakrame

28. The mighty (vīryavān) Arjuna (Savyasācī) cut off Duryodhana's wonderful bow and his hand-guard, and then he began to shatter the chariot into pieces.
दुर्योधनं च बाणाभ्यां तीक्ष्णाभ्यां विरथीकृतम् ।
अविध्यद्धस्ततलयोरुभयोरर्जुनस्तदा ॥२९॥
29. duryodhanaṁ ca bāṇābhyāṁ tīkṣṇābhyāṁ virathīkṛtam ,
avidhyaddhastatalayorubhayorarjunastadā.
29. duryodhanam ca bāṇābhyām tīkṣṇābhyām virathīkṛtam
avidhyat hastatalayoḥ ubhayoḥ arjunaḥ tadā

29. And then Arjuna struck Duryodhana, who had been rendered chariot-less, with two sharp arrows on both his palms.
तं कृच्छ्रामापदं प्राप्तं दृष्ट्वा परमधन्विनः ।
समापेतुः परीप्सन्तो धनंजयशरार्दितम् ॥३०॥
30. taṁ kṛcchrāmāpadaṁ prāptaṁ dṛṣṭvā paramadhanvinaḥ ,
samāpetuḥ parīpsanto dhanaṁjayaśarārditam.
30. tam kṛcchrām āpadam prāptam dṛṣṭvā paramadhanvinaḥ
samāpetuḥ parīpsantaḥ dhanañjayaśarārditam

30. Having seen him (Duryodhana) fallen into dire distress, tormented by the arrows of Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), the great archers, wishing to protect him, rushed together.
ते रथैर्बहुसाहस्रैः कल्पितैः कुञ्जरैर्हयैः ।
पदात्योघैश्च संरब्धैः परिवव्रुर्धनंजयम् ॥३१॥
31. te rathairbahusāhasraiḥ kalpitaiḥ kuñjarairhayaiḥ ,
padātyoghaiśca saṁrabdhaiḥ parivavrurdhanaṁjayam.
31. te rathaiḥ bahusāhasraiḥ kalpitaiḥ kuñjaraiḥ hayaiḥ
padātyoghaiḥ ca saṃrabdhaiḥ parivavruḥ dhanañjayam

31. They surrounded Arjuna (Dhānañjaya) with many thousands of equipped chariots, elephants, horses, and enraged masses of foot soldiers.
अथ नार्जुनगोविन्दौ रथो वापि व्यदृश्यत ।
अस्त्रवर्षेण महता जनौघैश्चापि संवृतौ ॥३२॥
32. atha nārjunagovindau ratho vāpi vyadṛśyata ,
astravarṣeṇa mahatā janaughaiścāpi saṁvṛtau.
32. atha na arjunagovindau rathaḥ vā api vyadṛśyata
astravarṣeṇa mahatā janoghaiḥ ca api saṃvṛtau
32. atha mahatā astravarṣeṇa ca janoghaiḥ api saṃvṛtau

32. Then, neither Arjuna nor Krishna (Govinda) nor even their chariot was visible, as they were enveloped by a great shower of weapons and also by masses of people.
ततोऽर्जुनोऽस्त्रवीर्येण निजघ्ने तां वरूथिनीम् ।
तत्र व्यङ्गीकृताः पेतुः शतशोऽथ रथद्विपाः ॥३३॥
33. tato'rjuno'stravīryeṇa nijaghne tāṁ varūthinīm ,
tatra vyaṅgīkṛtāḥ petuḥ śataśo'tha rathadvipāḥ.
33. tataḥ arjunaḥ astravīryeṇa nijaghne tām varūthinīm
tatra vyaṅgīkṛtāḥ petuḥ śataśaḥ atha rathadvipāḥ
33. tataḥ arjunaḥ astravīryeṇa tām varūthinīm nijaghne
atha tatra vyaṅgīkṛtāḥ rathadvipāḥ śataśaḥ petuḥ
33. Then Arjuna, by the power of his weapons, struck down that army. There, hundreds of dismembered chariots and elephants fell.
ते हता हन्यमानाश्च न्यगृह्णंस्तं रथोत्तमम् ।
स रथस्तम्भितस्तस्थौ क्रोशमात्रं समन्ततः ॥३४॥
34. te hatā hanyamānāśca nyagṛhṇaṁstaṁ rathottamam ,
sa rathastambhitastasthau krośamātraṁ samantataḥ.
34. te hatāḥ hanyamānāḥ ca nyagṛhṇan tam rathottamam
saḥ rathastambhitaḥ tasthau krośamātram samantataḥ
34. hatāḥ ca hanyamānāḥ te tam rathottamam nyagṛhṇan

34. Both those [chariots and elephants] that were killed and those that were being killed held back that excellent chariot. That chariot, obstructed by the fallen chariots, stood motionless for about a *krośa* in all directions.
ततोऽर्जुनं वृष्णिवीरस्त्वरितो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
धनुर्विस्फारयात्यर्थमहं ध्मास्यामि चाम्बुजम् ॥३५॥
35. tato'rjunaṁ vṛṣṇivīrastvarito vākyamabravīt ,
dhanurvisphārayātyarthamahaṁ dhmāsyāmi cāmbujam.
35. tataḥ arjunam vṛṣṇivīraḥ tvaritaḥ vākyam abravīt
dhanuḥ visphāraya atyartham aham dhmāsyāmi ca ambujam
35. tataḥ vṛṣṇivīraḥ tvaritaḥ arjunam vākyam abravīt
dhanuḥ atyartham visphāraya ca aham ambujam dhmāsyāmi
35. Then, the hero of the Vṛṣṇis (Kṛṣṇa) quickly spoke these words to Arjuna: "Stretch your bow mightily, and I will blow the conch."
ततो विस्फार्य बलवद्गाण्डीवं जघ्निवान्रिपून् ।
महता शरवर्षेण तलशब्देन चार्जुनः ॥३६॥
36. tato visphārya balavadgāṇḍīvaṁ jaghnivānripūn ,
mahatā śaravarṣeṇa talaśabdena cārjunaḥ.
36. tataḥ visphārya balavat gāṇḍīvam jaghnivān
ripūn mahatā śaravarṣeṇa talaśabdena ca arjunaḥ
36. tataḥ arjunaḥ balavat gāṇḍīvam visphārya mahatā

36. Then Arjuna, having mightily stretched his Gāṇḍīva (bow), struck down the enemies with a great shower of arrows and with the sound of his bowstring.
पाञ्चजन्यं च बलवद्दध्मौ तारेण केशवः ।
रजसा ध्वस्तपक्ष्मान्तः प्रस्विन्नवदनो भृशम् ॥३७॥
37. pāñcajanyaṁ ca balavaddadhmau tāreṇa keśavaḥ ,
rajasā dhvastapakṣmāntaḥ prasvinnavadano bhṛśam.

37. And Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) mightily blew his Pāñcajanya (conch) with a loud sound, his face greatly sweating and the tips of his eyelashes obscured by dust.
तस्य शङ्खस्य नादेन धनुषो निस्वनेन च ।
निःसत्त्वाश्च ससत्त्वाश्च क्षितौ पेतुस्तदा जनाः ॥३८॥
38. tasya śaṅkhasya nādena dhanuṣo nisvanena ca ,
niḥsattvāśca sasattvāśca kṣitau petustadā janāḥ.
38. tasya śaṅkhasya nādena dhanuṣaḥ nisvanena ca
niḥsattvāḥ ca sasattvāḥ ca kṣitau petuḥ tadā janāḥ
38. tadā tasya śaṅkhasya nādena ca dhanuṣaḥ nisvanena

38. Then, by the sound of his conch and the twang of the bow, people - both those devoid of courage and those possessing it - fell to the ground.
तैर्विमुक्तो रथो रेजे वाय्वीरित इवाम्बुदः ।
जयद्रथस्य गोप्तारस्ततः क्षुब्धाः सहानुगाः ॥३९॥
39. tairvimukto ratho reje vāyvīrita ivāmbudaḥ ,
jayadrathasya goptārastataḥ kṣubdhāḥ sahānugāḥ.
39. taiḥ vimuktaḥ rathaḥ reje vāyvīritaḥ iva ambudaḥ
jayadrathasya goptāraḥ tataḥ kṣubdhāḥ sahānugāḥ

39. The chariot, freed by them, shone like a cloud driven by the wind. Consequently, Jayadratha's protectors, along with their followers, became agitated.
ते दृष्ट्वा सहसा पार्थं गोप्तारः सैन्धवस्य तु ।
चक्रुर्नादान्बहुविधान्कम्पयन्तो वसुंधराम् ॥४०॥
40. te dṛṣṭvā sahasā pārthaṁ goptāraḥ saindhavasya tu ,
cakrurnādānbahuvidhānkampayanto vasuṁdharām.
40. te dṛṣṭvā sahasā pārtham goptāraḥ saindhavasya tu
cakruḥ nādān bahuvidhān kampayantaḥ vasundharām
40. tu te saindhavasya goptāraḥ sahasā pārtham dṛṣṭvā,

40. But those protectors of Jayadratha, having suddenly seen Pārtha (Arjuna), emitted various roars, causing the earth to tremble.
बाणशब्दरवांश्चोग्रान्विमिश्राञ्शङ्खनिस्वनैः ।
प्रादुश्चक्रुर्महात्मानः सिंहनादरवानपि ॥४१॥
41. bāṇaśabdaravāṁścogrānvimiśrāñśaṅkhanisvanaiḥ ,
prāduścakrurmahātmānaḥ siṁhanādaravānapi.
41. bāṇaśabdaravān ca ugrān vimiśrān śaṅkhaniḥsvanaiḥ
prāduḥ cakruḥ mahātmānaḥ siṃhanādaravān api
41. mahātmānaḥ ugrān bāṇaśabdaravān ca śaṅkhaniḥsvanaiḥ
vimiśrān siṃhanādaravān api prāduḥ cakruḥ
41. And those great warriors also produced fierce sounds of arrow-whistles, mixed with the blasts of conches, as well as lion-roars.
तं श्रुत्वा निनदं घोरं तावकानां समुत्थितम् ।
प्रदध्मतुस्तदा शङ्खौ वासुदेवधनंजयौ ॥४२॥
42. taṁ śrutvā ninadaṁ ghoraṁ tāvakānāṁ samutthitam ,
pradadhmatustadā śaṅkhau vāsudevadhanaṁjayau.
42. tam śrutvā ninadam ghoram tāvakānām samutthitam
pradadhmatuḥ tadā śaṅkhau vāsudevadhanañjayau
42. tadā vāsudevadhanañjayau tāvakānām samutthitam

42. Then, having heard that terrible roar arisen from your kinsmen, Vāsudeva (Krishna) and Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) blew their two conches.
तेन शब्देन महता पूरितेयं वसुंधरा ।
सशैला सार्णवद्वीपा सपाताला विशां पते ॥४३॥
43. tena śabdena mahatā pūriteyaṁ vasuṁdharā ,
saśailā sārṇavadvīpā sapātālā viśāṁ pate.
43. tena śabdena mahatā pūritā iyam vasuṃdharā
saśailā sārṇavadvīpā sapātālā viśām pate
43. viśām pate tena mahatā śabdena saśailā
sārṇavadvīpā sapātālā iyam vasuṃdharā pūritā
43. O lord of men, this earth, along with its mountains, oceans, islands, and subterranean regions, was completely filled by that mighty sound.
स शब्दो भरतश्रेष्ठ व्याप्य सर्वा दिशो दश ।
प्रतिसस्वान तत्रैव कुरुपाण्डवयोर्बले ॥४४॥
44. sa śabdo bharataśreṣṭha vyāpya sarvā diśo daśa ,
pratisasvāna tatraiva kurupāṇḍavayorbale.
44. saḥ śabdaḥ bharataśreṣṭha vyāpya sarvāḥ diśaḥ
daśa pratisasvāna tatra eva kurupāṇḍavayoḥ bale
44. bharataśreṣṭha saḥ śabdaḥ sarvāḥ daśa diśaḥ

44. O best of the Bhāratas, that sound, pervading all ten directions, resounded right there amidst the armies of the Kurus and Pāṇḍavas.
तावका रथिनस्तत्र दृष्ट्वा कृष्णधनंजयौ ।
संरम्भं परमं प्राप्तास्त्वरमाणा महारथाः ॥४५॥
45. tāvakā rathinastatra dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇadhanaṁjayau ,
saṁrambhaṁ paramaṁ prāptāstvaramāṇā mahārathāḥ.
45. tāvakāḥ rathinaḥ tatra dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇadhananjayau
saṃrambham paramam prāptāḥ tvaramāṇāḥ mahārathāḥ
45. tatra kṛṣṇadhananjayau dṛṣṭvā tāvakāḥ mahārathāḥ
rathinaḥ tvaramāṇāḥ paramam saṃrambham prāptāḥ
45. Upon seeing Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna (Dhanañjaya) there, your chariot warriors, the great charioteers, became exceedingly agitated and rushed forward.
अथ कृष्णौ महाभागौ तावका दृश्य दंशितौ ।
अभ्यद्रवन्त संक्रुद्धास्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥४६॥
46. atha kṛṣṇau mahābhāgau tāvakā dṛśya daṁśitau ,
abhyadravanta saṁkruddhāstadadbhutamivābhavat.
46. atha kṛṣṇau mahābhāgau tāvakāḥ dṛśya daṃśitau
abhyadravanta saṃkruddhāḥ tat adbhutam iva abhavat
46. atha tāvakāḥ saṃkruddhāḥ daṃśitau kṛṣṇau mahābhāgau
dṛśya abhyadravanta tat iva adbhutam abhavat
46. Then, seeing those two exalted ones, Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna (Kṛṣṇau), armored, your men, filled with great anger, rushed forward. That indeed was a marvelous sight.
