युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
नाभागधेयः प्राप्नोति धनं सुबलवानपि ।
भागधेयान्वितस्त्वर्थान्कृशो बालश्च विन्दति ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
nābhāgadheyaḥ prāpnoti dhanaṁ subalavānapi ,
bhāgadheyānvitastvarthānkṛśo bālaśca vindati.
1. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca | na abhāgadheyaḥ
prāpnoti dhanam su-balavān
api | bhāgadheya-anvitaḥ tu
arthān kṛśaḥ bālaḥ ca vindati
1. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca abhāgadheyaḥ api su-balavān dhanam na
prāpnoti tu bhāgadheya-anvitaḥ kṛśaḥ bālaḥ ca arthān vindati
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: A person not endowed with good fortune does not obtain wealth, even if very powerful. However, one who is destined to receive fortune obtains riches, even if weak or a child.
नालाभकाले लभते प्रयत्नेऽपि कृते सति ।
लाभकालेऽप्रयत्नेन लभते विपुलं धनम् ।
कृतयत्नाफलाश्चैव दृश्यन्ते शतशो नराः ॥२॥
2. nālābhakāle labhate prayatne'pi kṛte sati ,
lābhakāle'prayatnena labhate vipulaṁ dhanam ,
kṛtayatnāphalāścaiva dṛśyante śataśo narāḥ.
2. na alābha-kāle labhate prayatne api
kṛte sati | lābha-kāle a-prayatnena
labhate vipulam dhanam | kṛta-yatna-aphalāḥ
ca eva dṛśyante śataśaḥ narāḥ
2. alābha-kāle prayatne kṛte api (janaḥ)
na labhate lābha-kāle a-prayatnena
(janaḥ) vipulam dhanam labhate ca eva
kṛta-yatna-aphalāḥ narāḥ śataśaḥ dṛśyante
2. Even if effort is made, one does not obtain wealth during a period of no gain. However, during a period of gain, one obtains abundant wealth even without effort. Indeed, hundreds of people whose efforts yield no fruit are observed.
यदि यत्नो भवेन्मर्त्यः स सर्वं फलमाप्नुयात् ।
नालभ्यं चोपलभ्येत नृणां भरतसत्तम ॥३॥
3. yadi yatno bhavenmartyaḥ sa sarvaṁ phalamāpnuyāt ,
nālabhyaṁ copalabhyeta nṛṇāṁ bharatasattama.
3. yadi yatnaḥ bhavet martyaḥ sa sarvam phalam āpnuyāt
| na alabhyam ca upalabhyeta nṛṇām bharata-sattama
3. yadi martyaḥ yatnaḥ (eva) bhavet,
sa sarvam phalam āpnuyāt bharata-sattama,
ca alabhyam nṛṇām na upalabhyeta
3. If a mortal were to succeed merely by effort, he would obtain all results. However, what is unobtainable cannot be attained by humans, O best of Bharatas.
यदा प्रयत्नं कृतवान्दृश्यते ह्यफलो नरः ।
मार्गन्नयशतैरर्थानमार्गंश्चापरः सुखी ॥४॥
4. yadā prayatnaṁ kṛtavāndṛśyate hyaphalo naraḥ ,
mārgannayaśatairarthānamārgaṁścāparaḥ sukhī.
4. yadā prayatnam kṛtavān dṛśyate hi aphalaḥ naraḥ |
mārgan naya-śataiḥ arthān a-mārgaḥ ca aparaḥ sukhī
4. yadā naraḥ prayatnam kṛtavān aphalaḥ hi dṛśyate ca
aparaḥ a-mārgaḥ arthān naya-śataiḥ mārgan sukhī
4. When a man who has made efforts is observed to be unsuccessful, another person, though on an improper path, is happy and obtains riches through hundreds of means.
अकार्यमसकृत्कृत्वा दृश्यन्ते ह्यधना नराः ।
धनयुक्तास्त्वधर्मस्था दृश्यन्ते चापरे जनाः ॥५॥
5. akāryamasakṛtkṛtvā dṛśyante hyadhanā narāḥ ,
dhanayuktāstvadharmasthā dṛśyante cāpare janāḥ.
5. akāryam asakṛt kṛtvā dṛśyante hi adhanāḥ narāḥ
dhanayuktāḥ tu adharmasthāḥ dṛśyante ca apare janāḥ
5. hi narāḥ akāryam asakṛt kṛtvā adhanāḥ dṛśyante tu
ca apare janāḥ dhanayuktāḥ adharmasthāḥ dṛśyante
5. Indeed, people who repeatedly commit improper acts are seen to be without wealth. However, other people, though wealthy, are seen to abide in unrighteousness (adharma).
अधीत्य नीतिं यस्माच्च नीतियुक्तो न दृश्यते ।
अनभिज्ञश्च साचिव्यं गमितः केन हेतुना ।
विद्यायुक्तो ह्यविद्यश्च धनवान्दुर्गतस्तथा ॥६॥
6. adhītya nītiṁ yasmācca nītiyukto na dṛśyate ,
anabhijñaśca sācivyaṁ gamitaḥ kena hetunā ,
vidyāyukto hyavidyaśca dhanavāndurgatastathā.
6. adhītya nītim yasmāt ca nītiyuktaḥ
na dṛśyate anabhijñaḥ ca sācivyam
gamitaḥ kena hetunā vidyāyuktaḥ hi
avidyaḥ ca dhanavān durgataḥ tathā
6. yasmāt ca nītim adhītya nītiyuktaḥ na
dṛśyate ca kena hetunā anabhijñaḥ sācivyam
gamitaḥ hi vidyāyuktaḥ durgataḥ ca
avidyaḥ dhanavān tathā dhanavān durgataḥ
6. Why is it that, despite studying principles of conduct (nīti), an ethical person is not seen? And by what cause is an ignorant person appointed to a ministerial position? Indeed, a person endowed with knowledge (vidyā) is found to be poor, while an ignorant person is wealthy; similarly, a wealthy person (can also be) distressed.
यदि विद्यामुपाश्रित्य नरः सुखमवाप्नुयात् ।
न विद्वान्विद्यया हीनं वृत्त्यर्थमुपसंश्रयेत् ॥७॥
7. yadi vidyāmupāśritya naraḥ sukhamavāpnuyāt ,
na vidvānvidyayā hīnaṁ vṛttyarthamupasaṁśrayet.
7. yadi vidyām upāśritya naraḥ sukham avāpnuyāt na
vidvān vidyayā hīnam vṛttyartham upasaṃśrayet
7. yadi naraḥ vidyām upāśritya sukham avāpnuyāt,
na vidvān vidyayā hīnam vṛttyartham upasaṃśrayet
7. If a person were to truly attain happiness by resorting to knowledge (vidyā), then a learned person would not have to depend for a livelihood on one who is devoid of knowledge.
यथा पिपासां जयति पुरुषः प्राप्य वै जलम् ।
दृष्टार्थो विद्ययाप्येवमविद्यां प्रजहेन्नरः ॥८॥
8. yathā pipāsāṁ jayati puruṣaḥ prāpya vai jalam ,
dṛṣṭārtho vidyayāpyevamavidyāṁ prajahennaraḥ.
8. yathā pipāsām jayati puruṣaḥ prāpya vai jalam
dṛṣṭārthaḥ vidyayā api evam avidyām prajahet naraḥ
8. yathā puruṣaḥ vai jalam prāpya pipāsām jayati,
evam api naraḥ dṛṣṭārthaḥ vidyayā avidyām prajahet
8. Just as a person (puruṣa) overcomes thirst by indeed obtaining water, so too should a man, having realized the true purpose, abandon ignorance (avidyā) through knowledge (vidyā).
नाप्राप्तकालो म्रियते विद्धः शरशतैरपि ।
तृणाग्रेणापि संस्पृष्टः प्राप्तकालो न जीवति ॥९॥
9. nāprāptakālo mriyate viddhaḥ śaraśatairapi ,
tṛṇāgreṇāpi saṁspṛṣṭaḥ prāptakālo na jīvati.
9. na aprāptakālaḥ mriyate viddhaḥ śaraśataiḥ api
tṛṇāgreṇa api saṃspṛṣṭaḥ prāptakālaḥ na jīvati
9. na aprāptakālaḥ śaraśataiḥ api viddhaḥ mriyate
prāptakālaḥ tṛṇāgreṇa api saṃspṛṣṭaḥ na jīvati
9. A person whose appointed time has not come does not die, even if pierced by hundreds of arrows. A person whose appointed time has arrived does not live, even if merely touched by the tip of a blade of grass.
भीष्म उवाच ।
ईहमानः समारम्भान्यदि नासादयेद्धनम् ।
उग्रं तपः समारोहेन्न ह्यनुप्तं प्ररोहति ॥१०॥
10. bhīṣma uvāca ,
īhamānaḥ samārambhānyadi nāsādayeddhanam ,
ugraṁ tapaḥ samārohenna hyanuptaṁ prarohati.
10. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca īhamānaḥ samārambhān yadi na āsādayet
dhanam ugram tapaḥ samārohet na hi anuptam prarohati
10. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca yadi īhamānaḥ samārambhān dhanam na āsādayet,
(tadā) ugram tapaḥ samārohet hi anuptam na prarohati
10. Bhishma said: If a person, striving through great undertakings, does not acquire wealth, they should then undertake severe austerity (tapas). For, indeed, that which is unsown does not sprout.
दानेन भोगी भवति मेधावी वृद्धसेवया ।
अहिंसया च दीर्घायुरिति प्राहुर्मनीषिणः ॥११॥
11. dānena bhogī bhavati medhāvī vṛddhasevayā ,
ahiṁsayā ca dīrghāyuriti prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ.
11. dānena bhogī bhavati medhāvī vṛddhasevayā
ahiṃsayā ca dīrghāyuḥ iti prāhuḥ manīṣiṇaḥ
11. dānena bhogī bhavati,
vṛddhasevayā medhāvī (bhavati),
ca ahiṃsayā dīrghāyuḥ (bhavati) iti manīṣiṇaḥ prāhuḥ
11. One becomes an enjoyer of pleasures through giving (dāna), intelligent through serving the elders, and long-lived through non-harming (ahiṃsā). Thus declare the wise.
तस्माद्दद्यान्न याचेत पूजयेद्धार्मिकानपि ।
स्वाभाषी प्रियकृच्छुद्धः सर्वसत्त्वाविहिंसकः ॥१२॥
12. tasmāddadyānna yāceta pūjayeddhārmikānapi ,
svābhāṣī priyakṛcchuddhaḥ sarvasattvāvihiṁsakaḥ.
12. tasmāt dadyāt na yāceta pūjayet dhārmikān api
svābhāṣī priyakṛt śuddhaḥ sarvasattvāvihiṃsakaḥ
12. tasmāt (ekaḥ) dadyāt,
na yāceta api dhārmikān pūjayet (saḥ) svābhāṣī priyakṛt śuddhaḥ sarvasattvāvihiṃsakaḥ (syāt)
12. Therefore, one should give and not ask. One should also honor the righteous. One should be truthful (svābhāṣī), a doer of good, pure, and non-harming (avihiṃsaka) to all beings.
यदा प्रमाणप्रभवः स्वभावश्च सुखासुखे ।
मशकीटपिपीलानां स्थिरो भव युधिष्ठिर ॥१३॥
13. yadā pramāṇaprabhavaḥ svabhāvaśca sukhāsukhe ,
maśakīṭapipīlānāṁ sthiro bhava yudhiṣṭhira.
13. yadā pramāṇaprabhavaḥ svabhāvaḥ ca sukhāsukhe
maśakīṭapipīlānām sthiraḥ bhava yudhiṣṭhira
13. yudhiṣṭhira yadā maśakīṭapipīlānām pramāṇaprabhavaḥ svabhāvaḥ ca sukhāsukhe [bhavanti],
[tadā tvam] sthiraḥ bhava.
13. O Yudhiṣṭhira, be firm (in your understanding), for even the intrinsic nature (svabhāva) and the happiness and unhappiness of mosquitoes, insects, and ants arise from valid perception.
