ततो धनंजयं दृष्ट्वा बाणगाण्डीवधारिणम् ।
पुनरेव महानादं व्यसृजन्त महारथाः ॥१॥

1. Sañjaya said: After that, seeing Dhananjaya (Arjuna) wielding his arrows and the Gāṇḍīva bow, the great warriors again let out a tremendous roar.
पाण्डवाः सोमकाश्चैव ये चैषामनुयायिनः ।
दध्मुश्च मुदिताः शङ्खान्वीराः सागरसंभवान् ॥२॥
2. pāṇḍavāḥ somakāścaiva ye caiṣāmanuyāyinaḥ ,
dadhmuśca muditāḥ śaṅkhānvīrāḥ sāgarasaṁbhavān.

2. And the Pāṇḍavas, the Somakas, and their followers – those delighted heroes – all blew their conch shells, which were born from the ocean.
ततो भेर्यश्च पेश्यश्च क्रकचा गोविषाणिकाः ।
सहसैवाभ्यहन्यन्त ततः शब्दो महानभूत् ॥३॥
3. tato bheryaśca peśyaśca krakacā goviṣāṇikāḥ ,
sahasaivābhyahanyanta tataḥ śabdo mahānabhūt.

3. Then, kettledrums, small drums, saw-like instruments, and cow-horns were suddenly struck. Thereupon, a great sound arose.
अथ देवाः सगन्धर्वाः पितरश्च जनेश्वर ।
सिद्धचारणसंघाश्च समीयुस्ते दिदृक्षया ॥४॥
4. atha devāḥ sagandharvāḥ pitaraśca janeśvara ,
siddhacāraṇasaṁghāśca samīyuste didṛkṣayā.

4. O lord of men, then the gods with the Gandharvas, the ancestors (Pitṛs), and the hosts of Siddhas and Caraṇas, they all assembled there, desiring to witness it.
ऋषयश्च महाभागाः पुरस्कृत्य शतक्रतुम् ।
समीयुस्तत्र सहिता द्रष्टुं तद्वैशसं महत् ॥५॥
5. ṛṣayaśca mahābhāgāḥ puraskṛtya śatakratum ,
samīyustatra sahitā draṣṭuṁ tadvaiśasaṁ mahat.

5. And the highly esteemed sages, placing Indra (Śatakratu) at their forefront, assembled there to witness that great destruction.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो दृष्ट्वा युद्धाय सुसमुद्यते ।
ते सेने सागरप्रख्ये मुहुः प्रचलिते नृप ॥६॥
6. tato yudhiṣṭhiro dṛṣṭvā yuddhāya susamudyate ,
te sene sāgaraprakhye muhuḥ pracalite nṛpa.

6. O King, then Yudhiṣṭhira, having seen those two armies, well-prepared for battle and resembling vast oceans, repeatedly setting themselves in motion...
विमुच्य कवचं वीरो निक्षिप्य च वरायुधम् ।
अवरुह्य रथात्तूर्णं पद्भ्यामेव कृताञ्जलिः ॥७॥
7. vimucya kavacaṁ vīro nikṣipya ca varāyudham ,
avaruhya rathāttūrṇaṁ padbhyāmeva kṛtāñjaliḥ.

7. The hero (Yudhiṣṭhira) quickly removed his armor, discarded his excellent weapon, and descended from the chariot, standing on his own feet with folded hands.
पितामहमभिप्रेक्ष्य धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
वाग्यतः प्रययौ येन प्राङ्मुखो रिपुवाहिनीम् ॥८॥
8. pitāmahamabhiprekṣya dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
vāgyataḥ prayayau yena prāṅmukho ripuvāhinīm.

8. Yudhiṣṭhira, the King of natural law (dharma), having looked towards his grandfather (Bhīṣma), proceeded silently, facing east, towards the enemy army.
तं प्रयान्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ।
अवतीर्य रथात्तूर्णं भ्रातृभिः सहितोऽन्वयात् ॥९॥
9. taṁ prayāntamabhiprekṣya kuntīputro dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
avatīrya rathāttūrṇaṁ bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito'nvayāt.

9. Kuntī's son Arjuna (dhanañjaya), having seen Yudhiṣṭhira proceeding, quickly descended from the chariot and, accompanied by his brothers, followed him.
वासुदेवश्च भगवान्पृष्ठतोऽनुजगाम ह ।
यथामुख्याश्च राजानस्तमन्वाजग्मुरुत्सुकाः ॥१०॥
10. vāsudevaśca bhagavānpṛṣṭhato'nujagāma ha ,
yathāmukhyāśca rājānastamanvājagmurutsukāḥ.
10. vāsudevaḥ ca bhagavān pṛṣṭhataḥ anujagāma ha
yathāmukhyāḥ ca rājānaḥ tam anvājagmuḥ utsukāḥ
10. ca bhagavān vāsudevaḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ ha anujagāma
ca yathāmukhyāḥ rājānaḥ utsukāḥ tam anvājagmuḥ
10. And Lord Vāsudeva (bhagavān) also followed from behind, while the principal kings, full of eagerness, followed him.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
किं ते व्यवसितं राजन्यदस्मानपहाय वै ।
पद्भ्यामेव प्रयातोऽसि प्राङ्मुखो रिपुवाहिनीम् ॥११॥
11. arjuna uvāca ,
kiṁ te vyavasitaṁ rājanyadasmānapahāya vai ,
padbhyāmeva prayāto'si prāṅmukho ripuvāhinīm.
11. arjuna uvāca kim te vyavasitam rājan yat asmān apahāya
vai padbhyām eva prayātaḥ asi prāṅmukhaḥ ripuvāhinīm
11. rājan,

11. Arjuna said: O King, what is your intention that, after abandoning us, you are going on foot, facing the enemy army?
भीमसेन उवाच ।
क्व गमिष्यसि राजेन्द्र निक्षिप्तकवचायुधः ।
दंशितेष्वरिसैन्येषु भ्रातॄनुत्सृज्य पार्थिव ॥१२॥
12. bhīmasena uvāca ,
kva gamiṣyasi rājendra nikṣiptakavacāyudhaḥ ,
daṁśiteṣvarisainyeṣu bhrātṝnutsṛjya pārthiva.
12. bhīmasena uvāca kva gamiṣyasi rājendra nikṣiptakavacāyudhaḥ
daṃśiteṣu arisainyeṣu bhrātṝn utsṛjya pārthiva
12. pārthiva rājendra,
daṃśiteṣu arisainyeṣu (satsu) bhrātṝn utsṛjya,
nikṣiptakavacāyudhaḥ (tvam) kva gamiṣyasi
12. Bhīmasena said: O earthly ruler, O Lord of kings, where will you go, having cast aside your armor and weapons, abandoning your brothers, while the enemy armies are arrayed for battle?
नकुल उवाच ।
एवंगते त्वयि ज्येष्ठे मम भ्रातरि भारत ।
भीर्मे दुनोति हृदयं ब्रूहि गन्ता भवान्क्व नु ॥१३॥
13. nakula uvāca ,
evaṁgate tvayi jyeṣṭhe mama bhrātari bhārata ,
bhīrme dunoti hṛdayaṁ brūhi gantā bhavānkva nu.
13. nakula uvāca evam gate tvayi jyeṣṭhe mama bhrātari
bhārata bhīḥ me dunoti hṛdayam brūhi gantā bhavān kva nu
13. bhārata,
evam jyeṣṭhe mama bhrātari tvayi gate (sati),
bhīḥ me hṛdayam dunoti; bhavān kva nu gantā,
brūhi
13. Nakula said: O Bhārata, with you, my eldest brother, having gone in this manner, fear pains my heart. Tell me, where indeed are you going?
सहदेव उवाच ।
अस्मिन्रणसमूहे वै वर्तमाने महाभये ।
योद्धव्ये क्व नु गन्तासि शत्रूनभिमुखो नृप ॥१४॥
14. sahadeva uvāca ,
asminraṇasamūhe vai vartamāne mahābhaye ,
yoddhavye kva nu gantāsi śatrūnabhimukho nṛpa.
14. sahadeva uvāca asmin raṇasamūhe vai vartamāne mahābhaye
yoddhavye kva nu gantā asi śatrūn abhimukhaḥ nṛpa
14. nṛpa,
vai asmin mahābhaye raṇasamūhe vartamāne,
yoddhavye (sati),
śatrūn abhimukhaḥ (tvam) kva nu gantā asi
14. Sahadeva said: O King, while this battle formation, fraught with great danger, is present and combat is necessary, where indeed are you going, facing the enemies?
संजय उवाच ।
एवमाभाष्यमाणोऽपि भ्रातृभिः कुरुनन्दन ।
नोवाच वाग्यतः किंचिद्गच्छत्येव युधिष्ठिरः ॥१५॥
15. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evamābhāṣyamāṇo'pi bhrātṛbhiḥ kurunandana ,
novāca vāgyataḥ kiṁcidgacchatyeva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
15. sanjayaḥ uvāca evaṃ ābhāṣyamāṇaḥ api bhrātṛbhiḥ kurunandana
na uvāca vāgyataḥ kiṃcit gacchati eva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
15. sanjayaḥ uvāca kurunandana bhrātṛbhiḥ evaṃ ābhāṣyamāṇaḥ
api vāgyataḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ kiṃcit na uvāca eva gacchati
15. Sanjaya said: O delight of the Kurus (kurunandana)! Even though he was being addressed in this manner by his brothers, Yudhishthira, having restrained his speech, said nothing and simply continued to proceed.
तानुवाच महाप्राज्ञो वासुदेवो महामनाः ।
अभिप्रायोऽस्य विज्ञातो मयेति प्रहसन्निव ॥१६॥
16. tānuvāca mahāprājño vāsudevo mahāmanāḥ ,
abhiprāyo'sya vijñāto mayeti prahasanniva.
16. tān uvāca mahāprājñaḥ vāsudevaḥ mahāmanāḥ
abhiprāyaḥ asya vijñātaḥ mayā iti prahasan iva
16. mahāprājñaḥ mahāmanāḥ vāsudevaḥ tān uvāca asya

16. The extremely wise (mahāprājña) and magnanimous (mahāmanas) Vasudeva (Krishna) spoke to them, saying, "His intention (abhiprāya) has been understood by me," as if smiling.
एष भीष्मं तथा द्रोणं गौतमं शल्यमेव च ।
अनुमान्य गुरून्सर्वान्योत्स्यते पार्थिवोऽरिभिः ॥१७॥
17. eṣa bhīṣmaṁ tathā droṇaṁ gautamaṁ śalyameva ca ,
anumānya gurūnsarvānyotsyate pārthivo'ribhiḥ.
17. eṣaḥ bhīṣmam tathā droṇam gautamam śalyam eva ca
anumānya gurūn sarvān yotsyate pārthivaḥ aribhiḥ
17. eṣaḥ pārthivaḥ bhīṣmam tathā droṇam gautamam śalyam
eva ca sarvān gurūn anumānya aribhiḥ yotsyate
17. This (Yudhishthira) will honor all his elders (gurus) – Bhishma, and Drona, and Gautama (Kripa), and Salya – and then the king (pārthiva) will fight with his enemies.
श्रूयते हि पुराकल्पे गुरूनननुमान्य यः ।
युध्यते स भवेद्व्यक्तमपध्यातो महत्तरैः ॥१८॥
18. śrūyate hi purākalpe gurūnananumānya yaḥ ,
yudhyate sa bhavedvyaktamapadhyāto mahattaraiḥ.
18. śrūyate hi purākalpe gurūn ananumānya yaḥ yudhyate
saḥ bhavet vyaktam apadhyātaḥ mahattaraiḥ
18. hi śrūyate purākalpe yaḥ gurūn ananumānya yudhyate
saḥ vyaktam mahattaraiḥ apadhyātaḥ bhavet
18. Indeed, it is heard (śrūyate) that in ancient times (purākalpe), whoever fights without having obtained the permission of his elders (gurus) will certainly (vyaktam) be cursed by those superior to him.
अनुमान्य यथाशास्त्रं यस्तु युध्येन्महत्तरैः ।
ध्रुवस्तस्य जयो युद्धे भवेदिति मतिर्मम ॥१९॥
19. anumānya yathāśāstraṁ yastu yudhyenmahattaraiḥ ,
dhruvastasya jayo yuddhe bhavediti matirmama.
19. anumānya yathāśāstram yaḥ tu yudhyet mahattaraiḥ
dhruvaḥ tasya jayaḥ yuddhe bhavet iti matiḥ mama
19. mama matiḥ iti yaḥ tu yathāśāstram anumānya
mahattaraiḥ yudhyet tasya yuddhe jayaḥ dhruvaḥ bhavet
19. My opinion is that whoever fights against superior adversaries, having first obtained permission according to the scriptures, will certainly achieve victory in battle.
एवं ब्रुवति कृष्णे तु धार्तराष्ट्रचमूं प्रति ।
हाहाकारो महानासीन्निःशब्दास्त्वपरेऽभवन् ॥२०॥
20. evaṁ bruvati kṛṣṇe tu dhārtarāṣṭracamūṁ prati ,
hāhākāro mahānāsīnniḥśabdāstvapare'bhavan.
20. evam bruvati kṛṣṇe tu dhārtarāṣṭracamūm prati
hāhākaraḥ mahān āsīt niḥśabdāḥ tu apare abhavan
20. kṛṣṇe evam dhārtarāṣṭracamūm prati bruvati tu
mahān hāhākaraḥ āsīt tu apare niḥśabdāḥ abhavan
20. When Kṛṣṇa spoke thus to Dhṛtarāṣṭra's army, a great cry of dismay (hāhākara) arose, while others, however, became silent.
दृष्ट्वा युधिष्ठिरं दूराद्धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैनिकाः ।
मिथः संकथयां चक्रुर्नेशोऽस्ति कुलपांसनः ॥२१॥
21. dṛṣṭvā yudhiṣṭhiraṁ dūrāddhārtarāṣṭrasya sainikāḥ ,
mithaḥ saṁkathayāṁ cakrurneśo'sti kulapāṁsanaḥ.
21. dṛṣṭvā yudhiṣṭhiram dūrāt dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainikāḥ
mithaḥ saṃkathayām cakruḥ na eṣaḥ asti kulapāṃsanaḥ
21. dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainikāḥ dūrāt yudhiṣṭhiram dṛṣṭvā
mithaḥ saṃkathayām cakruḥ eṣaḥ kulapāṃsanaḥ na asti
21. Having seen Yudhiṣṭhira from afar, the soldiers of Dhṛtarāṣṭra conversed among themselves: 'This is not the family disgracer!'
व्यक्तं भीत इवाभ्येति राजासौ भीष्ममन्तिकात् ।
युधिष्ठिरः ससोदर्यः शरणार्थं प्रयाचकः ॥२२॥
22. vyaktaṁ bhīta ivābhyeti rājāsau bhīṣmamantikāt ,
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sasodaryaḥ śaraṇārthaṁ prayācakaḥ.
22. vyaktam bhītaḥ iva abhyeti rājā asau bhīṣmam antikāt
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sasodaryaḥ śaraṇārtham prayācakaḥ
22. vyaktam asau rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sasodaryaḥ bhītaḥ
iva śaraṇārtham prayācakaḥ bhīṣmam antikāt abhyeti
22. It is clear that this king Yudhiṣṭhira, accompanied by his brothers, is approaching Bhīṣma from close by, as if frightened, as a supplicant seeking refuge.
धनंजये कथं नाथे पाण्डवे च वृकोदरे ।
नकुले सहदेवे च भीतोऽभ्येति च पाण्डवः ॥२३॥
23. dhanaṁjaye kathaṁ nāthe pāṇḍave ca vṛkodare ,
nakule sahadeve ca bhīto'bhyeti ca pāṇḍavaḥ.
23. dhanaṃjaye kathaṃ nāthe pāṇḍave ca vṛkodare
nakule sahadeve ca bhītaḥ abhyeti ca pāṇḍavaḥ
23. pāṇḍavaḥ kathaṃ ca bhītaḥ abhyeti dhanaṃjaye
nāthe pāṇḍave ca vṛkodare nakule sahadeve ca
23. How can a Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira) become afraid when Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), Vṛkodara (Bhīma), Nakula, and Sahadeva are his protectors?
न नूनं क्षत्रियकुले जातः संप्रथिते भुवि ।
यथास्य हृदयं भीतमल्पसत्त्वस्य संयुगे ॥२४॥
24. na nūnaṁ kṣatriyakule jātaḥ saṁprathite bhuvi ,
yathāsya hṛdayaṁ bhītamalpasattvasya saṁyuge.
24. na nūnaṃ kṣatriyakule jātaḥ saṃprathite bhuvi
yathā asya hṛdayaṃ bhītam alpasattvasya saṃyuge
24. asya alpasattvasya hṛdayaṃ saṃyuge bhītam,
yathā na nūnaṃ saṃprathite bhuvi kṣatriyakule jātaḥ
24. Surely, he was not born in a renowned kṣatriya family on earth, given how his faint-hearted heart is so afraid in battle.
ततस्ते क्षत्रियाः सर्वे प्रशंसन्ति स्म कौरवान् ।
हृष्टाः सुमनसो भूत्वा चैलानि दुधुवुः पृथक् ॥२५॥
25. tataste kṣatriyāḥ sarve praśaṁsanti sma kauravān ,
hṛṣṭāḥ sumanaso bhūtvā cailāni dudhuvuḥ pṛthak.
25. tataḥ te kṣatriyāḥ sarve praśaṃsanti sma kauravān
hṛṣṭāḥ sumanasaḥ bhūtvā cailāni dudhuvuḥ pṛthak
25. tataḥ te sarve kṣatriyāḥ kauravān praśaṃsanti sma.
hṛṣṭāḥ sumanasaḥ bhūtvā pṛthak cailāni dudhuvuḥ
25. Then, all those kṣatriyas (warriors) praised the Kauravas. Having become joyful and cheerful, they separately shook their garments.
व्यनिन्दन्त ततः सर्वे योधास्तत्र विशां पते ।
युधिष्ठिरं ससोदर्यं सहितं केशवेन ह ॥२६॥
26. vyanindanta tataḥ sarve yodhāstatra viśāṁ pate ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ sasodaryaṁ sahitaṁ keśavena ha.
26. vyaniṃdanta tataḥ sarve yodhāḥ tatra viśāṃ pate
yudhiṣṭhiraṃ sasodaryaṃ sahitaṃ keśavena ha
26. tataḥ tatra viśāṃ pate sarve yodhāḥ sasodaryaṃ
keśavena sahitaṃ yudhiṣṭhiraṃ vyaniṃdanta ha
26. Then, O lord of the people (king), all the warriors there indeed reproached Yudhiṣṭhira, who was accompanied by his (uterine) brothers and by Keśava (Krishna).
ततस्तत्कौरवं सैन्यं धिक्कृत्वा तु युधिष्ठिरम् ।
निःशब्दमभवत्तूर्णं पुनरेव विशां पते ॥२७॥
27. tatastatkauravaṁ sainyaṁ dhikkṛtvā tu yudhiṣṭhiram ,
niḥśabdamabhavattūrṇaṁ punareva viśāṁ pate.
27. tataḥ tat kauravam sainyam dhikkṛtvā tu yudhiṣṭhiram
niḥśabdam abhavat tūrṇam punar eva viśām pate
27. viśām pate,
tataḥ,
tu,
yudhiṣṭhiram dhikkṛtvā,
tat kauravam sainyam punar eva tūrṇam niḥśabdam abhavat.
27. O lord of men, then, after Yudhiṣṭhira had reproached that Kuru army, it quickly became silent again.
किं नु वक्ष्यति राजासौ किं भीष्मः प्रतिवक्ष्यति ।
किं भीमः समरश्लाघी किं नु कृष्णार्जुनाविति ॥२८॥
28. kiṁ nu vakṣyati rājāsau kiṁ bhīṣmaḥ prativakṣyati ,
kiṁ bhīmaḥ samaraślāghī kiṁ nu kṛṣṇārjunāviti.
28. kim nu vakṣyati rājā asau kim bhīṣmaḥ prativakṣyati

28. asau rājā kim nu vakṣyati? bhīṣmaḥ

kṛṣṇārjunau nu kim (vakṣyataḥ) iti?
28. What, indeed, will that king say? What will Bhīṣma reply? What will Bhīma, who prides himself in battle, say? And what, indeed, will Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna (Kṛṣṇārjunau) say?
विवक्षितं किमस्येति संशयः सुमहानभूत् ।
उभयोः सेनयो राजन्युधिष्ठिरकृते तदा ॥२९॥
29. vivakṣitaṁ kimasyeti saṁśayaḥ sumahānabhūt ,
ubhayoḥ senayo rājanyudhiṣṭhirakṛte tadā.
29. vivakṣitam kim asya iti saṃśayaḥ sumahān abhūt
ubhayoḥ senayoḥ rājan yudhiṣṭhirakṛte tadā
29. rājan,

"asya kim vivakṣitam" iti,

29. O King, then a very great doubt arose in both armies regarding Yudhiṣṭhira's intentions, [thinking] 'What is his purpose?'
स विगाह्य चमूं शत्रोः शरशक्तिसमाकुलाम् ।
भीष्ममेवाभ्ययात्तूर्णं भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ॥३०॥
30. sa vigāhya camūṁ śatroḥ śaraśaktisamākulām ,
bhīṣmamevābhyayāttūrṇaṁ bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ.
30. saḥ vigāhya camūm śatroḥ śaraśaktisamākulām
bhīṣmam eva abhyayāt tūrṇam bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ

30. He (Yudhiṣṭhira), accompanied by his brothers, quickly entered the enemy's army, which was teeming with arrows and spears, and approached Bhīṣma himself.
तमुवाच ततः पादौ कराभ्यां पीड्य पाण्डवः ।
भीष्मं शांतनवं राजा युद्धाय समुपस्थितम् ॥३१॥
31. tamuvāca tataḥ pādau karābhyāṁ pīḍya pāṇḍavaḥ ,
bhīṣmaṁ śāṁtanavaṁ rājā yuddhāya samupasthitam.

31. Then, King Yudhiṣṭhira, the Pāṇḍava, after reverently touching Bhīṣma’s feet with his hands, spoke to the son of Śāntanu, who stood ready for battle.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
आमन्त्रये त्वां दुर्धर्ष योत्स्ये तात त्वया सह ।
अनुजानीहि मां तात आशिषश्च प्रयोजय ॥३२॥
32. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
āmantraye tvāṁ durdharṣa yotsye tāta tvayā saha ,
anujānīhi māṁ tāta āśiṣaśca prayojaya.

32. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "O unconquerable one, I greet you. O dear father, I shall fight with you. Please permit me, O dear father, and bestow your blessings."
भीष्म उवाच ।
यद्येवं नाभिगच्छेथा युधि मां पृथिवीपते ।
शपेयं त्वां महाराज पराभावाय भारत ॥३३॥
33. bhīṣma uvāca ,
yadyevaṁ nābhigacchethā yudhi māṁ pṛthivīpate ,
śapeyaṁ tvāṁ mahārāja parābhāvāya bhārata.

33. Bhīṣma said: "O lord of the earth, O great king, O descendant of Bharata, if you had not approached me thus in battle, I would have cursed you to be defeated."
प्रीतोऽस्मि पुत्र युध्यस्व जयमाप्नुहि पाण्डव ।
यत्तेऽभिलषितं चान्यत्तदवाप्नुहि संयुगे ॥३४॥
34. prīto'smi putra yudhyasva jayamāpnuhi pāṇḍava ,
yatte'bhilaṣitaṁ cānyattadavāpnuhi saṁyuge.
34. prītaḥ asmi putra yudhyasva jayam āpnuhi pāṇḍava
yat te abhilaṣitam ca anyat tat avāpnuhi saṃyuge

34. "I am pleased, O son. Fight, O Pāṇḍava, and obtain victory. Whatever else is desired by you, achieve that in this battle."
व्रियतां च वरः पार्थ किमस्मत्तोऽभिकाङ्क्षसि ।
एवं गते महाराज न तवास्ति पराजयः ॥३५॥
35. vriyatāṁ ca varaḥ pārtha kimasmatto'bhikāṅkṣasi ,
evaṁ gate mahārāja na tavāsti parājayaḥ.
35. vriyatām ca varaḥ pārtha kim asmartaḥ abhīkāṅkṣasi
| evam gate mahārāja na tava asti parājayaḥ
35. pārtha,
ca varaḥ vriyatām; kim asmartaḥ abhīkāṅkṣasi? mahārāja,

35. And choose a boon, O Arjuna (Pārtha); what do you desire from us? When things have come to this, O great king, there is no defeat for you.
अर्थस्य पुरुषो दासो दासस्त्वर्थो न कस्यचित् ।
इति सत्यं महाराज बद्धोऽस्म्यर्थेन कौरवैः ॥३६॥
36. arthasya puruṣo dāso dāsastvartho na kasyacit ,
iti satyaṁ mahārāja baddho'smyarthena kauravaiḥ.
36. arthasya puruṣaḥ dāsaḥ dāsaḥ tu arthaḥ na kasyacit
| iti satyam mahārāja baddhaḥ asmi arthena kauravaiḥ
36. puruṣaḥ arthasya dāsaḥ; tu arthaḥ kasyacit na dāsaḥ.

36. A person is a slave of wealth, but wealth is not a slave to anyone. This is the truth, O great king: I am bound by wealth by the Kauravas.
अतस्त्वां क्लीबवद्वाक्यं ब्रवीमि कुरुनन्दन ।
हृतोऽस्म्यर्थेन कौरव्य युद्धादन्यत्किमिच्छसि ॥३७॥
37. atastvāṁ klībavadvākyaṁ bravīmi kurunandana ,
hṛto'smyarthena kauravya yuddhādanyatkimicchasi.
37. atas tvām klībavat vākyam bravīmi kurunandana |

37. Therefore, O joy of the Kurus (Kurunandana), I speak to you words like a eunuch. O Kuru (Kauravya), I have been carried away by wealth; what else do you desire apart from battle?
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
मन्त्रयस्व महाप्राज्ञ हितैषी मम नित्यशः ।
युध्यस्व कौरवस्यार्थे ममैष सततं वरः ॥३८॥
38. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
mantrayasva mahāprājña hitaiṣī mama nityaśaḥ ,
yudhyasva kauravasyārthe mamaiṣa satataṁ varaḥ.

38. Yudhishthira said: "O greatly wise one, counsel me, you who are always my well-wisher. Fight for the sake of the Kauravas; this is my constant boon."
भीष्म उवाच ।
राजन्किमत्र साह्यं ते करोमि कुरुनन्दन ।
कामं योत्स्ये परस्यार्थे ब्रूहि यत्ते विवक्षितम् ॥३९॥
39. bhīṣma uvāca ,
rājankimatra sāhyaṁ te karomi kurunandana ,
kāmaṁ yotsye parasyārthe brūhi yatte vivakṣitam.
39. bhīṣma uvāca rājan kim atra sāhyaṃ te karomi kurunandana
kāmaṃ yotsye parasya arthe brūhi yat te vivakṣitam

39. Bhishma said: "O King, O son of Kuru, what help can I offer you in this situation? I will indeed fight for the opposing side. Please tell me what you wish."
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
कथं जयेयं संग्रामे भवन्तमपराजितम् ।
एतन्मे मन्त्रय हितं यदि श्रेयः प्रपश्यसि ॥४०॥
40. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
kathaṁ jayeyaṁ saṁgrāme bhavantamaparājitam ,
etanme mantraya hitaṁ yadi śreyaḥ prapaśyasi.
40. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca kathaṃ jayeyaṃ saṃgrāme bhavantam
aparājitam etat me mantraya hitam yadi śreyaḥ prapaśyasi

40. Yudhishthira said: "How can I defeat you, the unconquered, in battle? Please advise me on what is beneficial in this regard, if you perceive it as the supreme welfare."
भीष्म उवाच ।
न तं पश्यामि कौन्तेय यो मां युध्यन्तमाहवे ।
विजयेत पुमान्कश्चिदपि साक्षाच्छतक्रतुः ॥४१॥
41. bhīṣma uvāca ,
na taṁ paśyāmi kaunteya yo māṁ yudhyantamāhave ,
vijayeta pumānkaścidapi sākṣācchatakratuḥ.
41. bhīṣma uvāca na tam paśyāmi kaunteya yaḥ mām yudhyantam
āhave vijayeta pumān kaścit api sākṣāt śatakratuḥ
41. bhīṣma uvāca: kaunteya,

41. Bhishma said: "O son of Kunti, I do not see any man who could conquer me while I am fighting in battle, not even Indra (śatakratu) in person."
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
हन्त पृच्छामि तस्मात्त्वां पितामह नमोऽस्तु ते ।
जयोपायं ब्रवीहि त्वमात्मनः समरे परैः ॥४२॥
42. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
hanta pṛcchāmi tasmāttvāṁ pitāmaha namo'stu te ,
jayopāyaṁ bravīhi tvamātmanaḥ samare paraiḥ.
42. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca hanta pṛcchāmi tasmāt tvām pitāmaha
namaḥ astu te jayopāyaṃ bravīhi tvam ātmanaḥ samare paraiḥ
42. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca: hanta,

samare paraiḥ ātmanaḥ jayopāyaṃ bravīhi.
42. Yudhishthira said: "Indeed, O Grandsire, I now ask you; salutations to you! Please tell me the means by which your own self (ātman) can be conquered by enemies in battle."
भीष्म उवाच ।
न शत्रुं तात पश्यामि समरे यो जयेत माम् ।
न तावन्मृत्युकालो मे पुनरागमनं कुरु ॥४३॥
43. bhīṣma uvāca ,
na śatruṁ tāta paśyāmi samare yo jayeta mām ,
na tāvanmṛtyukālo me punarāgamanaṁ kuru.
43. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca na śatruṃ tāta paśyāmi samare yaḥ
jayeta mām na tāvat mṛtyukālaḥ me punarāgamanaṃ kuru

43. Bhishma spoke: "Dear son, I do not see any enemy in battle who could defeat me. My time of death has not yet arrived. Please return."
संजय उवाच ।
ततो युधिष्ठिरो वाक्यं भीष्मस्य कुरुनन्दन ।
शिरसा प्रतिजग्राह भूयस्तमभिवाद्य च ॥४४॥
44. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tato yudhiṣṭhiro vākyaṁ bhīṣmasya kurunandana ,
śirasā pratijagrāha bhūyastamabhivādya ca.
44. saṃjayaḥ uvāca tataḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ vākyaṃ bhīṣmasya
kurunandana śirasā pratijagrāha bhūyaḥ tam abhivādya ca

44. Sanjaya spoke: "O delight of the Kurus, Yudhishthira then reverently accepted Bhishma's words, bowing his head, and after greeting him again."
प्रायात्पुनर्महाबाहुराचार्यस्य रथं प्रति ।
पश्यतां सर्वसैन्यानां मध्येन भ्रातृभिः सह ॥४५॥
45. prāyātpunarmahābāhurācāryasya rathaṁ prati ,
paśyatāṁ sarvasainyānāṁ madhyena bhrātṛbhiḥ saha.
45. prāyāt punar mahābāhuḥ ācāryasya rathaṃ prati
paśyatām sarvasainyānām madhyena bhrātṛbhiḥ saha

45. The mighty-armed one again went towards the teacher's chariot, accompanied by his brothers, passing through the midst of all the armies who were watching.
स द्रोणमभिवाद्याथ कृत्वा चैव प्रदक्षिणम् ।
उवाच वाचा दुर्धर्षमात्मनिःश्रेयसं वचः ॥४६॥
46. sa droṇamabhivādyātha kṛtvā caiva pradakṣiṇam ,
uvāca vācā durdharṣamātmaniḥśreyasaṁ vacaḥ.
46. saḥ droṇam abhivādya atha kṛtvā ca eva pradakṣiṇam
uvāca vācā durdharṣam ātmaniḥśreyasaṃ vacaḥ
46. saḥ atha droṇam abhivādya ca eva pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā,
vācā uvāca durdharṣam ātmaniḥśreyasaṃ vacaḥ.
46. He, having bowed to Drona and performed circumambulation (pradakṣiṇa), then spoke with unassailable words beneficial for his own welfare.
आमन्त्रये त्वां भगवन्योत्स्ये विगतकल्मषः ।
जयेयं च रिपून्सर्वाननुज्ञातस्त्वया द्विज ॥४७॥
47. āmantraye tvāṁ bhagavanyotsye vigatakalmaṣaḥ ,
jayeyaṁ ca ripūnsarvānanujñātastvayā dvija.
47. āmantraye tvām bhagavan yotsye vigatakalmaṣaḥ
jayeyam ca ripūn sarvān anujñātaḥ tvayā dvija
47. bhagavan dvija tvayā anujñātaḥ tvām āmantraye

47. O revered sir (bhagavan), O twice-born one (dvija), I address you. Having been freed from sin, I will fight, and with your permission, I shall conquer all enemies.
द्रोण उवाच ।
यदि मां नाभिगच्छेथा युद्धाय कृतनिश्चयः ।
शपेयं त्वां महाराज पराभावाय सर्वशः ॥४८॥
48. droṇa uvāca ,
yadi māṁ nābhigacchethā yuddhāya kṛtaniścayaḥ ,
śapeyaṁ tvāṁ mahārāja parābhāvāya sarvaśaḥ.
48. droṇaḥ uvāca yadi mām na abhigacchethāḥ yuddhāya
kṛtaniścayaḥ śapeyam tvām mahārāja parābhāvāya sarvaśaḥ

48. Drona said: "O great king (mahārāja), if you were not to approach me with determination for battle, I would curse you in every way for utter defeat."
तद्युधिष्ठिर तुष्टोऽस्मि पूजितश्च त्वयानघ ।
अनुजानामि युध्यस्व विजयं समवाप्नुहि ॥४९॥
49. tadyudhiṣṭhira tuṣṭo'smi pūjitaśca tvayānagha ,
anujānāmi yudhyasva vijayaṁ samavāpnuhi.
49. tat yudhiṣṭhira tuṣṭaḥ asmi pūjitaḥ ca tvayā
anagha anujānāmi yudhyasva vijayam samavāpnuhi
49. tat yudhiṣṭhira anagha tvayā pūjitaḥ ca tuṣṭaḥ
asmi anujānāmi yudhyasva vijayam samavāpnuhi
49. Therefore, O Yudhishthira, O sinless one (anagha), I am pleased, and you have honored me. I grant you permission; fight, and achieve victory.
करवाणि च ते कामं ब्रूहि यत्तेऽभिकाङ्क्षितम् ।
एवं गते महाराज युद्धादन्यत्किमिच्छसि ॥५०॥
50. karavāṇi ca te kāmaṁ brūhi yatte'bhikāṅkṣitam ,
evaṁ gate mahārāja yuddhādanyatkimicchasi.
50. karavāṇi ca te kāmam brūhi yat te abhikāṅkṣitam
evam gate mahārāja yuddhāt anyat kim icchasi
50. karavāṇi ca te kāmam brūhi yat te abhikāṅkṣitam

50. And I shall fulfill your desire; tell me what you wish for. O great king (mahārāja), now that things have come to this, what else do you desire apart from battle?
अर्थस्य पुरुषो दासो दासस्त्वर्थो न कस्यचित् ।
इति सत्यं महाराज बद्धोऽस्म्यर्थेन कौरवैः ॥५१॥
51. arthasya puruṣo dāso dāsastvartho na kasyacit ,
iti satyaṁ mahārāja baddho'smyarthena kauravaiḥ.

51. O great king (mahārāja), a man (puruṣa) is a servant of wealth, but wealth is not a servant of anyone. This is the truth. I am bound by wealth by the Kauravas.
अतस्त्वां क्लीबवद्ब्रूमो युद्धादन्यत्किमिच्छसि ।
योत्स्यामि कौरवस्यार्थे तवाशास्यो जयो मया ॥५२॥
52. atastvāṁ klībavadbrūmo yuddhādanyatkimicchasi ,
yotsyāmi kauravasyārthe tavāśāsyo jayo mayā.
52. ataḥ tvām klībavat brūmaḥ yuddhāt anyat kim icchasi
yotsyāmi kauravasya arthe tava āśāsyaḥ jayaḥ mayā

52. Therefore, we speak to you as if you were impotent. What else do you desire apart from war? I shall fight for the sake of the Kauravas. Your victory (jaya) is to be wished for by me.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
जयमाशास्स्व मे ब्रह्मन्मन्त्रयस्व च मद्धितम् ।
युध्यस्व कौरवस्यार्थे वर एष वृतो मया ॥५३॥
53. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
jayamāśāssva me brahmanmantrayasva ca maddhitam ,
yudhyasva kauravasyārthe vara eṣa vṛto mayā.

53. Yudhiṣṭhira spoke: O Brahmin (brahman), wish for my victory, and counsel what is beneficial for me. Fight for the sake of the Kauravas. This boon has been chosen by me.
द्रोण उवाच ।
ध्रुवस्ते विजयो राजन्यस्य मन्त्री हरिस्तव ।
अहं च त्वाभिजानामि रणे शत्रून्विजेष्यसि ॥५४॥
54. droṇa uvāca ,
dhruvaste vijayo rājanyasya mantrī haristava ,
ahaṁ ca tvābhijānāmi raṇe śatrūnvijeṣyasi.

54. Droṇa spoke: O King (rājan), your victory (jaya) is certain, for Hari (Kṛṣṇa) is your counselor. And I know you; therefore, you will conquer your enemies in battle.
यतो धर्मस्ततः कृष्णो यतः कृष्णस्ततो जयः ।
युध्यस्व गच्छ कौन्तेय पृच्छ मां किं ब्रवीमि ते ॥५५॥
55. yato dharmastataḥ kṛṣṇo yataḥ kṛṣṇastato jayaḥ ,
yudhyasva gaccha kaunteya pṛccha māṁ kiṁ bravīmi te.
55. yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ yataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
yudhyasva gaccha kaunteya pṛccha mām kim bravīmi te
55. yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ yataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
kaunteya yudhyasva gaccha mām pṛccha kim te bravīmi
55. Where there is natural law (dharma), there is Krishna; where there is Krishna, there is victory. O son of Kunti (Kaunteya), fight! Go! Ask me, what shall I tell you?
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
पृच्छामि त्वां द्विजश्रेष्ठ शृणु मे यद्विवक्षितम् ।
कथं जयेयं संग्रामे भवन्तमपराजितम् ॥५६॥
56. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
pṛcchāmi tvāṁ dvijaśreṣṭha śṛṇu me yadvivakṣitam ,
kathaṁ jayeyaṁ saṁgrāme bhavantamaparājitam.
56. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca pṛcchāmi tvām dvijaśreṣṭha śṛṇu me yat
vivakṣitam katham jayeyam saṃgrāme bhavantam aparājitam

56. Yudhiṣṭhira said: O best among the twice-born (dvijaśreṣṭha), I ask you, listen to what I wish to say. How can I conquer you, who are unconquerable, in battle?
द्रोण उवाच ।
न तेऽस्ति विजयस्तावद्यावद्युध्याम्यहं रणे ।
ममाशु निधने राजन्यतस्व सह सोदरैः ॥५७॥
57. droṇa uvāca ,
na te'sti vijayastāvadyāvadyudhyāmyahaṁ raṇe ,
mamāśu nidhane rājanyatasva saha sodaraiḥ.
57. droṇaḥ uvāca na te asti vijayaḥ tāvat yāvat yudhyāmi
aham raṇe mama āśu nidhane rājan yatasva saha sodaraiḥ
57. droṇaḥ uvāca aham yāvat raṇe yudhyāmi tāvat te vijayaḥ

57. Droṇa said: You will not achieve victory (vijaya) as long as I fight in battle. O King, quickly strive for my demise along with your brothers.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
हन्त तस्मान्महाबाहो वधोपायं वदात्मनः ।
आचार्य प्रणिपत्यैष पृच्छामि त्वां नमोऽस्तु ते ॥५८॥
58. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
hanta tasmānmahābāho vadhopāyaṁ vadātmanaḥ ,
ācārya praṇipatyaiṣa pṛcchāmi tvāṁ namo'stu te.
58. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca hanta tasmāt mahābāho vadhopāyam vada
ātmanaḥ ācārya praṇipatya eṣa pṛcchāmi tvām namaḥ astu te

58. Yudhiṣṭhira said: Alas! Therefore, O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), tell me the means of your own demise. O preceptor (ācārya), bowing down to you, I ask you this; salutations to you!
द्रोण उवाच ।
न शत्रुं तात पश्यामि यो मां हन्याद्रणे स्थितम् ।
युध्यमानं सुसंरब्धं शरवर्षौघवर्षिणम् ॥५९॥
59. droṇa uvāca ,
na śatruṁ tāta paśyāmi yo māṁ hanyādraṇe sthitam ,
yudhyamānaṁ susaṁrabdhaṁ śaravarṣaughavarṣiṇam.
59. droṇaḥ uvāca | na śatrum tāta paśyāmi yaḥ mām hanyāt raṇe
sthitam | yudhyamānam susaṃrabdham śaravarṣaughavarṣiṇam
59. droṇaḥ uvāca tāta,
yaḥ mām raṇe sthitam,
yudhyamānam,
susaṃrabdham,
śaravarṣaughavarṣiṇam (santīti) hanyāt,
(tam) śatrum na paśyāmi.
59. Droṇa said: "O dear one, I do not see any enemy who could kill me in battle while I am standing (firm), fighting, exceedingly enraged, and showering torrents of arrows."
ऋते प्रायगतं राजन्न्यस्तशस्त्रमचेतनम् ।
हन्यान्मां युधि योधानां सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥६०॥
60. ṛte prāyagataṁ rājannyastaśastramacetanam ,
hanyānmāṁ yudhi yodhānāṁ satyametadbravīmi te.
60. ṛte prāyagatam rājan nyastaśastram acetanam |
hanyāt mām yudhi yodhānām satyam etat bravīmi te
60. rājan,
(aham) prāyagatam,
nyastaśastram,
acetanam (san) (eva) mām (kaścid) hanyāt ṛte (etat) yudhī yodhānām (madhye kaścit api na hanyāt) etat satyam te bravīmi.
60. O King, I tell you this truth: among the warriors in battle, someone could kill me only if I were resorting to a fast unto death, had laid down my weapons, and become unconscious.
शस्त्रं चाहं रणे जह्यां श्रुत्वा सुमहदप्रियम् ।
श्रद्धेयवाक्यात्पुरुषादेतत्सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते ॥६१॥
61. śastraṁ cāhaṁ raṇe jahyāṁ śrutvā sumahadapriyam ,
śraddheyavākyātpuruṣādetatsatyaṁ bravīmi te.
61. śastram ca aham raṇe jahyām | śrutvā sumahat apriyam
| śraddheyavākyāt puruṣāt etat satyam bravīmi te
61. ca,
aham raṇe śastram jahyām sumahat apriyam śrutvā,
śraddheyavākyāt puruṣāt (śrutvā) etat satyam te bravīmi.
61. And I would lay down my weapons (śastra) in battle upon hearing very great unpleasant news from a trustworthy person. This truth I tell you.
संजय उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाराज भारद्वाजस्य धीमतः ।
अनुमान्य तमाचार्यं प्रायाच्छारद्वतं प्रति ॥६२॥
62. saṁjaya uvāca ,
etacchrutvā mahārāja bhāradvājasya dhīmataḥ ,
anumānya tamācāryaṁ prāyācchāradvataṁ prati.
62. sañjayaḥ uvāca | etat śrutvā mahārāja bhāradvājasya
dhīmataḥ | anumānya tam ācāryam prāyāt śāradvatam prati
62. sañjayaḥ uvāca mahārāja,
etat (droṇasya vacanam) śrutvā,
dhīmataḥ bhāradvājasya (ācāryasya) tam ācāryam anumānya,
(Yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) śāradvatam prati prāyāt.
62. Sañjaya said: "Having heard this, O great King, and having obtained permission from that wise preceptor (Bhāradvāja, i.e., Droṇa), (Yudhiṣṭhira) went towards Śāradvata (Kṛpa)."
सोऽभिवाद्य कृपं राजा कृत्वा चापि प्रदक्षिणम् ।
उवाच दुर्धर्षतमं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ॥६३॥
63. so'bhivādya kṛpaṁ rājā kṛtvā cāpi pradakṣiṇam ,
uvāca durdharṣatamaṁ vākyaṁ vākyaviśāradaḥ.
63. saḥ abhivādya kṛpam rājā kṛtvā ca api pradakṣiṇam
uvāca durdharṣatamam vākyam vākyaviśāradaḥ
63. rājā vākyaviśāradaḥ saḥ kṛpam abhivādya ca api
pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā durdharṣatamam vākyam uvāca
63. The king, an expert in speech, greeted Kṛpa, performed a circumambulation (pradakṣiṇam), and then spoke these most formidable words.
अनुमानये त्वां योत्स्यामि गुरो विगतकल्मषः ।
जयेयं च रिपून्सर्वाननुज्ञातस्त्वयानघ ॥६४॥
64. anumānaye tvāṁ yotsyāmi guro vigatakalmaṣaḥ ,
jayeyaṁ ca ripūnsarvānanujñātastvayānagha.
64. anumānaye tvām yotsyāmi guro vigatakalmaṣaḥ
jayeyam ca ripūn sarvān anujñātaḥ tvayā anagha
64. guro anagha,
विगतकल्मषः tvām anumānaye; aham yotsyāmi ca tvayā anujñātaḥ sarvān ripūn jayeyam
64. O preceptor (guru), O sinless one, I seek your approval to fight, free from any sin or guilt (karma). And, having received your permission, may I conquer all my enemies.
कृप उवाच ।
यदि मां नाभिगच्छेथा युद्धाय कृतनिश्चयः ।
शपेयं त्वां महाराज पराभावाय सर्वशः ॥६५॥
65. kṛpa uvāca ,
yadi māṁ nābhigacchethā yuddhāya kṛtaniścayaḥ ,
śapeyaṁ tvāṁ mahārāja parābhāvāya sarvaśaḥ.
65. kṛpaḥ uvāca yadi mām na abhigacchethāḥ yuddhāya
kṛtaniścayaḥ śapeyam tvām mahārāja parābhāvāya sarvaśaḥ
65. kṛpaḥ uvāca - mahārāja,
yadi kṛtaniścayaḥ tvam mām yuddhāya na abhigacchethāḥ,
(tadhi) tvām parābhāvāya sarvaśaḥ śapeyam
65. Kṛpa said, "O great king, if you, determined for battle, do not approach me, I would curse you for utter defeat in every respect."
अर्थस्य पुरुषो दासो दासस्त्वर्थो न कस्यचित् ।
इति सत्यं महाराज बद्धोऽस्म्यर्थेन कौरवैः ॥६६॥
66. arthasya puruṣo dāso dāsastvartho na kasyacit ,
iti satyaṁ mahārāja baddho'smyarthena kauravaiḥ.
66. arthasya puruṣaḥ dāsaḥ dāsaḥ tu arthaḥ na kasyacit
iti satyam mahārāja baddhaḥ asmi arthena kauravaiḥ
66. mahārāja,
puruṣaḥ arthasya dāsaḥ; tu arthaḥ kasyacit na dāsaḥiti satyamkauravaiḥ arthena baddhaḥ asmi
66. "A man is a slave to wealth (artha), but wealth (artha) is not a slave to anyone. This is the truth, O great king. I am bound by the Kauravas through their wealth."
तेषामर्थे महाराज योद्धव्यमिति मे मतिः ।
अतस्त्वां क्लीबवद्ब्रूमि युद्धादन्यत्किमिच्छसि ॥६७॥
67. teṣāmarthe mahārāja yoddhavyamiti me matiḥ ,
atastvāṁ klībavadbrūmi yuddhādanyatkimicchasi.
67. teṣām arthe mahārāja yoddhavyam iti me matiḥ ataḥ
tvām klībavat brūmi yuddhāt anyat kim icchasi

67. O great king, my conviction is that one must fight for their sake. Therefore, I address you as if you were impotent (klībavat). What else do you desire apart from battle?
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
हन्त पृच्छामि ते तस्मादाचार्य शृणु मे वचः ॥६८॥
68. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
hanta pṛcchāmi te tasmādācārya śṛṇu me vacaḥ.

68. Yudhishthira said: 'Well then, O preceptor (ācārya), therefore I ask you, please listen to my words.'
संजय उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा व्यथितो राजा नोवाच गतचेतनः ।
तं गौतमः प्रत्युवाच विज्ञायास्य विवक्षितम् ।
अवध्योऽहं महीपाल युध्यस्व जयमाप्नुहि ॥६९॥
69. saṁjaya uvāca ,
ityuktvā vyathito rājā novāca gatacetanaḥ ,
taṁ gautamaḥ pratyuvāca vijñāyāsya vivakṣitam ,
avadhyo'haṁ mahīpāla yudhyasva jayamāpnuhi.
69. sañjayaḥ uvāca iti uktvā vyathitaḥ rājā
na uvāca gatacetanaḥ tam gautamaḥ
pratyuvāca vijñāya asya vivakṣitam avadhyaḥ
aham mahīpāla yudhyasva jayam āpnuhi

vijñāya gautamaḥ pratyuvāca mahīpāla

69. Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus, the distressed king, having lost consciousness, did not speak. Then Gautama (Drona), understanding his intention, replied to him: 'I am invulnerable, O protector of the earth (mahīpāla). Fight and attain victory!'
प्रीतस्त्वभिगमेनाहं जयं तव नराधिप ।
आशासिष्ये सदोत्थाय सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥७०॥
70. prītastvabhigamenāhaṁ jayaṁ tava narādhipa ,
āśāsiṣye sadotthāya satyametadbravīmi te.
70. prītaḥ tu abhigamena aham jayam tava narādhipa
āśāsiṣye sadā utthāya satyam etat bravīmi te
70. narādhipa tu aham abhigamena prītaḥ sadā utthāya
tava jayam āśāsiṣye etat satyam te bravīmi
70. But I am pleased by your approach, O lord of men (narādhipa). I shall always rise (for battle) and bless your victory. I speak this truth to you.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाराज गौतमस्य वचस्तदा ।
अनुमान्य कृपं राजा प्रययौ येन मद्रराट् ॥७१॥
71. etacchrutvā mahārāja gautamasya vacastadā ,
anumānya kṛpaṁ rājā prayayau yena madrarāṭ.
71. etat śrutvā mahārāja gautamasya vacas tadā
anumānya kṛpaṃ rājā prayayau yena madrarāṭ
71. mahārāja tadā etat gautamasya vacas śrutvā
rājā kṛpaṃ anumānya yena madrarāṭ prayayau
71. O great king, having heard these words of Gautama, the king then, after obtaining Kṛpa's permission, proceeded to where the king of Madras was.
स शल्यमभिवाद्याथ कृत्वा चाभिप्रदक्षिणम् ।
उवाच राजा दुर्धर्षमात्मनिःश्रेयसं वचः ॥७२॥
72. sa śalyamabhivādyātha kṛtvā cābhipradakṣiṇam ,
uvāca rājā durdharṣamātmaniḥśreyasaṁ vacaḥ.
72. saḥ śalyam abhivādya atha kṛtvā ca abhipradakṣiṇam
uvāca rājā durdharṣam ātmaniḥśreyasam vacas
72. atha saḥ śalyam abhivādya ca abhipradakṣiṇam
kṛtvā rājā durdharṣam ātmaniḥśreyasam vacas uvāca
72. Then he, after saluting Śalya and circumambulating him, spoke words beneficial for his own welfare to the formidable king.
अनुमानये त्वां योत्स्यामि गुरो विगतकल्मषः ।
जयेयं च महाराज अनुज्ञातस्त्वया रिपून् ॥७३॥
73. anumānaye tvāṁ yotsyāmi guro vigatakalmaṣaḥ ,
jayeyaṁ ca mahārāja anujñātastvayā ripūn.

73. O preceptor, I seek your permission to fight, so that I may be free from fault. And O great king, having received your permission, may I conquer my enemies.
शल्य उवाच ।
यदि मां नाभिगच्छेथा युद्धाय कृतनिश्चयः ।
शपेयं त्वां महाराज पराभावाय वै रणे ॥७४॥
74. śalya uvāca ,
yadi māṁ nābhigacchethā yuddhāya kṛtaniścayaḥ ,
śapeyaṁ tvāṁ mahārāja parābhāvāya vai raṇe.

74. Śalya said: "O great king, if you do not approach me with a firm resolve for battle, I would indeed curse you to defeat in battle."
तुष्टोऽस्मि पूजितश्चास्मि यत्काङ्क्षसि तदस्तु ते ।
अनुजानामि चैव त्वां युध्यस्व जयमाप्नुहि ॥७५॥
75. tuṣṭo'smi pūjitaścāsmi yatkāṅkṣasi tadastu te ,
anujānāmi caiva tvāṁ yudhyasva jayamāpnuhi.
75. tuṣṭaḥ asmi pūjitaḥ ca asmi yat kāṅkṣasi tat astu
te anujānāmi ca eva tvām yudhyasva jayam āpnuhi
75. asmi tuṣṭaḥ ca asmi pūjitaḥ yat kāṅkṣasi tat te
astu ca eva tvām anujānāmi yudhyasva jayam āpnuhi
75. I am pleased and I am honored. Whatever you desire, let that be yours. And indeed, I permit you; fight and achieve victory!
ब्रूहि चैव परं वीर केनार्थः किं ददामि ते ।
एवं गते महाराज युद्धादन्यत्किमिच्छसि ॥७६॥
76. brūhi caiva paraṁ vīra kenārthaḥ kiṁ dadāmi te ,
evaṁ gate mahārāja yuddhādanyatkimicchasi.
76. brūhi ca eva param vīra kena arthaḥ kim dadāmi
te evam gate mahārāja yuddhāt anyat kim icchasi
76. ca eva param vīra brūhi kena arthaḥ kim dadāmi
te mahārāja evam gate yuddhāt anyat kim icchasi
76. And indeed, tell me, O great hero, what is your purpose (artha)? What shall I give you? O great king, this being the situation, what else do you desire apart from war?
अर्थस्य पुरुषो दासो दासस्त्वर्थो न कस्यचित् ।
इति सत्यं महाराज बद्धोऽस्म्यर्थेन कौरवैः ॥७७॥
77. arthasya puruṣo dāso dāsastvartho na kasyacit ,
iti satyaṁ mahārāja baddho'smyarthena kauravaiḥ.

77. A man is a servant of material gain (artha), but material gain (artha) is not a servant of anyone. This is the truth, O great king: I am bound by material obligations (artha) to the Kauravas.
करिष्यामि हि ते कामं भागिनेय यथेप्सितम् ।
ब्रवीम्यतः क्लीबवत्त्वां युद्धादन्यत्किमिच्छसि ॥७८॥
78. kariṣyāmi hi te kāmaṁ bhāgineya yathepsitam ,
bravīmyataḥ klībavattvāṁ yuddhādanyatkimicchasi.
78. kariṣyāmi hi te kāmam bhāgineya yathā īpsitam
bravīmi ataḥ klībavat tvām yuddhāt anyat kim icchasi
78. hi bhāgineya te kāmam yathā īpsitam kariṣyāmi ataḥ
klībavat tvām bravīmi yuddhāt anyat kim icchasi
78. I shall indeed fulfill that desire of yours, O nephew, as you wish. Therefore, I speak to you like an impotent person; what else do you desire apart from war?
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
मन्त्रयस्व महाराज नित्यं मद्धितमुत्तमम् ।
कामं युध्य परस्यार्थे वरमेतद्वृणोम्यहम् ॥७९॥
79. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
mantrayasva mahārāja nityaṁ maddhitamuttamam ,
kāmaṁ yudhya parasyārthe varametadvṛṇomyaham.
79. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca mantrayasva mahārāja nityaṃ mat-hitam
uttamam kāmaṃ yudhya parasya arthe varam etat vṛṇomi aham
79. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca mahārāja nityaṃ mat-hitam uttamam

79. Yudhishthira said: "O great king, always advise me regarding my supreme welfare. I desire that you fight for the sake of the enemy; this is the boon I choose."
शल्य उवाच ।
ब्रूहि किमत्र साह्यं ते करोमि नृपसत्तम ।
कामं योत्स्ये परस्यार्थे वृतोऽस्म्यर्थेन कौरवैः ॥८०॥
80. śalya uvāca ,
brūhi kimatra sāhyaṁ te karomi nṛpasattama ,
kāmaṁ yotsye parasyārthe vṛto'smyarthena kauravaiḥ.
80. śalyaḥ uvāca brūhi kim atra sāhyam te karomi nṛpa-sattama
kāmam yotsye parasya arthe vṛtaḥ asmi arthena kauravaiḥ
80. śalyaḥ uvāca nṛpa-sattama,
atra te kim sāhyam karomi brūhi kāmam parasya arthe yotsye,
kauravaiḥ arthena vṛtaḥ asmi
80. Shalya said: "O best of kings, tell me what assistance I can provide you in this matter. I will indeed fight for the sake of the enemy, as I have been engaged by the Kauravas for their wealth."
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
स एव मे वरः सत्य उद्योगे यस्त्वया कृतः ।
सूतपुत्रस्य संग्रामे कार्यस्तेजोवधस्त्वया ॥८१॥
81. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
sa eva me varaḥ satya udyoge yastvayā kṛtaḥ ,
sūtaputrasya saṁgrāme kāryastejovadhastvayā.
81. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca saḥ eva me varaḥ satya udyoge yaḥ tvayā
kṛtaḥ sūta-putrasya saṃgrāme kāryaḥ tejo-vadhaḥ tvayā
81. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca satya,
udyoge tvayā yaḥ kṛtaḥ,
saḥ eva me varaḥ saṃgrāme sūta-putrasya tejo-vadhaḥ tvayā kāryaḥ
81. Yudhishthira said: "O truthful one, that very commitment which was made by you in this undertaking is my boon. In battle, the destruction of the son of Suta's (Karna's) valor is to be accomplished by you."
शल्य उवाच ।
संपत्स्यत्येष ते कामः कुन्तीपुत्र यथेप्सितः ।
गच्छ युध्यस्व विस्रब्धं प्रतिजाने जयं तव ॥८२॥
82. śalya uvāca ,
saṁpatsyatyeṣa te kāmaḥ kuntīputra yathepsitaḥ ,
gaccha yudhyasva visrabdhaṁ pratijāne jayaṁ tava.
82. śalyaḥ uvāca saṃpatsyati eṣaḥ te kāmaḥ kuntī-putra
yathā-īpsitaḥ gaccha yudhyasva visrabdham pratijāne jayam tava
82. śalyaḥ uvāca kuntī-putra,
te eṣaḥ kāmaḥ yathā-īpsitaḥ saṃpatsyati gaccha,
visrabdham yudhyasva tava jayam pratijāne
82. Shalya said: "O son of Kunti, this desire of yours will be fulfilled exactly as you wished. Go and fight with confidence; I guarantee your victory."
संजय उवाच ।
अनुमान्याथ कौन्तेयो मातुलं मद्रकेश्वरम् ।
निर्जगाम महासैन्याद्भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ॥८३॥
83. saṁjaya uvāca ,
anumānyātha kaunteyo mātulaṁ madrakeśvaram ,
nirjagāma mahāsainyādbhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ.

madrakeśvaram nirjagāma mahāsainyāt bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ

83. Sanjaya said: Having then taken leave of his maternal uncle, the king of Madra (Śalya), Kunti's son (Arjuna) departed from the great army, surrounded by his brothers.
वासुदेवस्तु राधेयमाहवेऽभिजगाम वै ।
तत एनमुवाचेदं पाण्डवार्थे गदाग्रजः ॥८४॥
84. vāsudevastu rādheyamāhave'bhijagāma vai ,

84. But Vāsudeva (Krishna) approached the son of Rādhā (Karṇa) in battle. Then, the elder brother of Gada (Krishna) spoke these words to him for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas.
श्रुतं मे कर्ण भीष्मस्य द्वेषात्किल न योत्स्यसि ।
अस्मान्वरय राधेय यावद्भीष्मो न हन्यते ॥८५॥
85. śrutaṁ me karṇa bhīṣmasya dveṣātkila na yotsyasi ,
asmānvaraya rādheya yāvadbhīṣmo na hanyate.

85. "Karṇa, I have heard that you will not fight out of enmity towards Bhīṣma. O son of Rādhā, choose us while Bhīṣma is not yet killed."
हते तु भीष्मे राधेय पुनरेष्यसि संयुगे ।
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य साहाय्यं यदि पश्यसि चेत्समम् ॥८६॥
86. hate tu bhīṣme rādheya punareṣyasi saṁyuge ,
dhārtarāṣṭrasya sāhāyyaṁ yadi paśyasi cetsamam.

86. "But once Bhīṣma is slain, O son of Rādhā, you will return to battle, if you deem assistance to Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana) appropriate."
कर्ण उवाच ।
न विप्रियं करिष्यामि धार्तराष्ट्रस्य केशव ।
त्यक्तप्राणं हि मां विद्धि दुर्योधनहितैषिणम् ॥८७॥
87. karṇa uvāca ,
na vipriyaṁ kariṣyāmi dhārtarāṣṭrasya keśava ,
tyaktaprāṇaṁ hi māṁ viddhi duryodhanahitaiṣiṇam.

87. Karna said: O Keśava, I will not do anything displeasing to Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana). Indeed, know me as one who has forsaken his life, desiring the welfare of Duryodhana.
संजय उवाच ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं कृष्णः संन्यवर्तत भारत ।
युधिष्ठिरपुरोगैश्च पाण्डवैः सह संगतः ॥८८॥
88. saṁjaya uvāca ,

88. Saṃjaya said: O Bhārata (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), hearing that speech, Krishna returned, accompanied by the Pāṇḍavas, led by Yudhiṣṭhira.
अथ सैन्यस्य मध्ये तु प्राक्रोशत्पाण्डवाग्रजः ।
योऽस्मान्वृणोति तदहं वरये साह्यकारणात् ॥८९॥
89. atha sainyasya madhye tu prākrośatpāṇḍavāgrajaḥ ,
yo'smānvṛṇoti tadahaṁ varaye sāhyakāraṇāt.

89. Then, in the midst of the army, the eldest of the Pāṇḍavas (Yudhiṣṭhira) cried out: "Whoever chooses us, him I will choose for the sake of assistance."
अथ तान्समभिप्रेक्ष्य युयुत्सुरिदमब्रवीत् ।
प्रीतात्मा धर्मराजानं कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥९०॥
90. atha tānsamabhiprekṣya yuyutsuridamabravīt ,
prītātmā dharmarājānaṁ kuntīputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.

90. Then, having observed them, Yuyutsu, with a pleased soul (ātman), spoke this to King Dharma (dharmarāja), Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kunti.
अहं योत्स्यामि मिषतः संयुगे धार्तराष्ट्रजान् ।
युष्मदर्थे महाराज यदि मां वृणुषेऽनघ ॥९१॥
91. ahaṁ yotsyāmi miṣataḥ saṁyuge dhārtarāṣṭrajān ,
yuṣmadarthe mahārāja yadi māṁ vṛṇuṣe'nagha.

91. mahārāja anagha yadi mām vṛṇuṣe,

91. O great king, blameless one (anagha), if you choose me, I will fight the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra in battle for your sake, even while they look on.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
एह्येहि सर्वे योत्स्यामस्तव भ्रातॄनपण्डितान् ।
युयुत्सो वासुदेवश्च वयं च ब्रूम सर्वशः ॥९२॥
92. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
ehyehi sarve yotsyāmastava bhrātṝnapaṇḍitān ,
yuyutso vāsudevaśca vayaṁ ca brūma sarvaśaḥ.

"
92. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'Come, come! All of us will fight your ignorant brothers. Yuyutsu, Vāsudeva, and we all wholeheartedly declare this.'
वृणोमि त्वां महाबाहो युध्यस्व मम कारणात् ।
त्वयि पिण्डश्च तन्तुश्च धृतराष्ट्रस्य दृश्यते ॥९३॥
93. vṛṇomi tvāṁ mahābāho yudhyasva mama kāraṇāt ,
tvayi piṇḍaśca tantuśca dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dṛśyate.

93. O mighty-armed one, I choose you; fight for my sake. Through you, both the funerary offering (piṇḍa) and the continuation of the lineage (tantu) of Dhṛtarāṣṭra are seen.
भजस्वास्मान्राजपुत्र भजमानान्महाद्युते ।
न भविष्यति दुर्बुद्धिर्धार्तराष्ट्रोऽत्यमर्षणः ॥९४॥
94. bhajasvāsmānrājaputra bhajamānānmahādyute ,
na bhaviṣyati durbuddhirdhārtarāṣṭro'tyamarṣaṇaḥ.

94. O prince (rāja-putra), O highly glorious one, join us who are devoted to you. The ill-intentioned Dhṛtarāṣṭra will not become excessively enraged.
संजय उवाच ।
ततो युयुत्सुः कौरव्यः परित्यज्य सुतांस्तव ।
जगाम पाण्डुपुत्राणां सेनां विश्राव्य दुन्दुभिम् ॥९५॥
95. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tato yuyutsuḥ kauravyaḥ parityajya sutāṁstava ,
jagāma pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ senāṁ viśrāvya dundubhim.

95. Sanjaya said: Then Yuyutsu, a descendant of Kuru, abandoning your sons, went to the army of the Pāṇḍavas after sounding a war drum (dundubhi).
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा संप्रहृष्टः सहानुजैः ।
जग्राह कवचं भूयो दीप्तिमत्कनकोज्ज्वलम् ॥९६॥
96. tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā saṁprahṛṣṭaḥ sahānujaiḥ ,
jagrāha kavacaṁ bhūyo dīptimatkanakojjvalam.

96. Then King Yudhiṣṭhira, greatly pleased with his younger brothers, again took up his radiant armor, which was gleaming with gold.
प्रत्यपद्यन्त ते सर्वे रथान्स्वान्पुरुषर्षभाः ।
ततो व्यूहं यथापूर्वं प्रत्यव्यूहन्त ते पुनः ॥९७॥
97. pratyapadyanta te sarve rathānsvānpuruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
tato vyūhaṁ yathāpūrvaṁ pratyavyūhanta te punaḥ.
97. prati apadyanta te sarve rathān svān puruṣarṣabhāḥ
tataḥ vyūham yathāpūrvam prati avyūhanta te punaḥ
97. sarve te puruṣarṣabhāḥ svān rathān prati apadyanta

97. All of those excellent men (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) returned to their own chariots. Then, they again arranged their battle formations (vyūha) as they had done previously.
अवादयन्दुन्दुभींश्च शतशश्चैव पुष्करान् ।
सिंहनादांश्च विविधान्विनेदुः पुरुषर्षभाः ॥९८॥
98. avādayandundubhīṁśca śataśaścaiva puṣkarān ,
siṁhanādāṁśca vividhānvineduḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ.

98. And the excellent men (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) caused hundreds of drums (dundubhi, puṣkara) to sound, and they roared various lion-like battle cries (siṃhanāda).
रथस्थान्पुरुषव्याघ्रान्पाण्डवान्प्रेक्ष्य पार्थिवाः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नादयः सर्वे पुनर्जहृषिरे मुदा ॥९९॥
99. rathasthānpuruṣavyāghrānpāṇḍavānprekṣya pārthivāḥ ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnādayaḥ sarve punarjahṛṣire mudā.

99. When the kings, including Dhṛṣṭadyumna and others, saw the Pāṇḍavas - those tiger-like men (puruṣavyāghrān) standing on their chariots - they all rejoiced again with great delight.
गौरवं पाण्डुपुत्राणां मान्यान्मानयतां च तान् ।
दृष्ट्वा महीक्षितस्तत्र पूजयां चक्रिरे भृशम् ॥१००॥
100. gauravaṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ mānyānmānayatāṁ ca tān ,
dṛṣṭvā mahīkṣitastatra pūjayāṁ cakrire bhṛśam.

100. There, the kings (mahīkṣitaḥ), upon seeing (dṛṣṭvā) the great stature (gauravam) of the Pāṇḍava sons (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - those venerable individuals (mānyān) who were themselves honoring (mānayatām) (others) - paid them immense (bhṛśam) homage (pūjayām cakrire).
सौहृदं च कृपां चैव प्राप्तकालं महात्मनाम् ।
दयां च ज्ञातिषु परां कथयां चक्रिरे नृपाः ॥१०१॥
101. sauhṛdaṁ ca kṛpāṁ caiva prāptakālaṁ mahātmanām ,
dayāṁ ca jñātiṣu parāṁ kathayāṁ cakrire nṛpāḥ.

101. nṛpāḥ mahātmanām prāptakālam sauhṛdam ca kṛpām ca eva,

101. The kings (nṛpāḥ) spoke (kathayām cakrire) about the timely (prāptakālam) friendship (sauhṛdam) and compassion (kṛpām) of those great souls (mahātmanām), and their supreme (parām) mercy (dayām) towards their relatives (jñātiṣu).
साधु साध्विति सर्वत्र निश्चेरुः स्तुतिसंहिताः ।
वाचः पुण्याः कीर्तिमतां मनोहृदयहर्षिणीः ॥१०२॥
102. sādhu sādhviti sarvatra niśceruḥ stutisaṁhitāḥ ,
vācaḥ puṇyāḥ kīrtimatāṁ manohṛdayaharṣiṇīḥ.
102. sādhu sādhu iti sarvatra niśceruḥ stutisaṃhitāḥ
vācaḥ puṇyāḥ kīrtimatām manohṛdayaharṣiṇīḥ

102. Everywhere (sarvatra), sacred (puṇyāḥ) words (vācaḥ) filled with praise (stutisaṃhitāḥ), saying "Excellent! Excellent!" (sādhu sādhu iti) and gladdening the mind and heart (manohṛdayaharṣiṇīḥ), emerged (niśceruḥ) in praise of the glorious ones (kīrtimatām).
म्लेच्छाश्चार्याश्च ये तत्र ददृशुः शुश्रुवुस्तदा ।
वृत्तं तत्पाण्डुपुत्राणां रुरुदुस्ते सगद्गदाः ॥१०३॥
103. mlecchāścāryāśca ye tatra dadṛśuḥ śuśruvustadā ,
vṛttaṁ tatpāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ ruruduste sagadgadāḥ.
103. mlecchāḥ ca āryāḥ ca ye tatra dadṛśuḥ śuśruvuḥ tadā
vṛttaṃ tat pāṇḍuputrāṇām ruruduḥ te sagadgadāḥ
103. tadā ye tatra mlecchāḥ ca āryāḥ ca pāṇḍuputrāṇām tat vṛttaṃ dadṛśuḥ śuśruvuḥ,

103. Then, both the foreigners (mlecchāḥ) and the noble ones (āryāḥ) who were present there saw and heard that event concerning the sons of Pāṇḍu, and they wept, their voices choked with emotion.
ततो जघ्नुर्महाभेरीः शतशश्चैव पुष्करान् ।
शङ्खांश्च गोक्षीरनिभान्दध्मुर्हृष्टा मनस्विनः ॥१०४॥
104. tato jaghnurmahābherīḥ śataśaścaiva puṣkarān ,
śaṅkhāṁśca gokṣīranibhāndadhmurhṛṣṭā manasvinaḥ.
104. tataḥ jaghnuḥ mahābherīḥ śataśaḥ ca eva puṣkarān
śaṅkhān ca gokṣīranibhān dadhmuḥ hṛṣṭāḥ manasvinaḥ
104. tataḥ hṛṣṭāḥ manasvinaḥ śataśaḥ mahābherīḥ ca eva puṣkarān jaghnuḥ,
ca gokṣīranibhān śaṅkhān dadhmuḥ
104. Then, the high-minded and joyous warriors beat hundreds of great drums (mahābherīḥ) and other drums (puṣkarān), and they blew conches as white as cow's milk.
