मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
उपविष्टं ततः स्कन्दं हिरण्यकवचस्रजम् ।
हिरण्यचूडमुकुटं हिरण्याक्षं महाप्रभम् ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
upaviṣṭaṁ tataḥ skandaṁ hiraṇyakavacasrajam ,
hiraṇyacūḍamukuṭaṁ hiraṇyākṣaṁ mahāprabham.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then (he saw) Skanda seated, wearing a golden armor and garland, with a golden crest and crown, golden-eyed, and greatly radiant.
लोहिताम्बरसंवीतं तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रं मनोरमम् ।
सर्वलक्षणसंपन्नं त्रैलोक्यस्यापि सुप्रियम् ॥२॥
2. lohitāmbarasaṁvītaṁ tīkṣṇadaṁṣṭraṁ manoramam ,
sarvalakṣaṇasaṁpannaṁ trailokyasyāpi supriyam.
2. lohitāmbarasaṃvītam tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭram manoramam
sarvalakṣaṇasaṃpannam trailokyasya api supriyam
2. Clothed in red garments, with sharp fangs, charming, endowed with all auspicious marks, and very dear even to the three worlds.
ततस्तं वरदं शूरं युवानं मृष्टकुण्डलम् ।
अभजत्पद्मरूपा श्रीः स्वयमेव शरीरिणी ॥३॥
3. tatastaṁ varadaṁ śūraṁ yuvānaṁ mṛṣṭakuṇḍalam ,
abhajatpadmarūpā śrīḥ svayameva śarīriṇī.
3. tataḥ tam varadam śūram yuvānam mṛṣṭakuṇḍalam
abhajat padmarūpā śrīḥ svayam eva śarīriṇī
3. Then, the goddess Śrī, lotus-like and embodied, herself chose him—the youthful, valiant boon-giver adorned with polished earrings.
श्रिया जुष्टः पृथुयशाः स कुमारवरस्तदा ।
निषण्णो दृश्यते भूतैः पौर्णमास्यां यथा शशी ॥४॥
4. śriyā juṣṭaḥ pṛthuyaśāḥ sa kumāravarastadā ,
niṣaṇṇo dṛśyate bhūtaiḥ paurṇamāsyāṁ yathā śaśī.
4. śriyā juṣṭaḥ pṛthuyaśāḥ saḥ kumāravaraḥ tadā
niṣaṇṇaḥ dṛśyate bhūtaiḥ paurṇamāsyām yathā śaśī
4. Then, that best of youths, endowed with splendor (śrī) and widely renowned, was seen seated by all beings, just as the moon is seen on a full moon night.
अपूजयन्महात्मानो ब्राह्मणास्तं महाबलम् ।
इदमाहुस्तदा चैव स्कन्दं तत्र महर्षयः ॥५॥
5. apūjayanmahātmāno brāhmaṇāstaṁ mahābalam ,
idamāhustadā caiva skandaṁ tatra maharṣayaḥ.
5. apūjayan mahātmānaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ tam mahābalam
idam āhuḥ tadā ca eva skandam tatra maharṣayaḥ
5. The great-souled Brahmins worshipped him, the mighty one. And then, there, the great sages (maharṣayaḥ) also spoke these words to Skanda.
हिरण्यवर्ण भद्रं ते लोकानां शंकरो भव ।
त्वया षड्रात्रजातेन सर्वे लोका वशीकृताः ॥६॥
6. hiraṇyavarṇa bhadraṁ te lokānāṁ śaṁkaro bhava ,
tvayā ṣaḍrātrajātena sarve lokā vaśīkṛtāḥ.
6. hiraṇyavarṇa bhadram te lokānām śaṅkaraḥ bhava
tvayā ṣaḍrātrajātena sarve lokāḥ vaśīkṛtāḥ
6. O golden-hued one! May good fortune be with you; become the bestower of welfare (śaṅkara) for all the worlds. By you, who were born in six nights, all the worlds have been brought under control.
अभयं च पुनर्दत्तं त्वयैवैषां सुरोत्तम ।
तस्मादिन्द्रो भवानस्तु त्रैलोक्यस्याभयंकरः ॥७॥
7. abhayaṁ ca punardattaṁ tvayaivaiṣāṁ surottama ,
tasmādindro bhavānastu trailokyasyābhayaṁkaraḥ.
7. abhayam ca punaḥ dattam tvayā eva eṣām sura-uttama
tasmāt indraḥ bhavān astu trailokyasya abhayaṃ-karaḥ
7. O best among gods, you have indeed granted them safety again. Therefore, may you become Indra, the one who bestows fearlessness upon the three worlds.
स्कन्द उवाच ।
किमिन्द्रः सर्वलोकानां करोतीह तपोधनाः ।
कथं देवगणांश्चैव पाति नित्यं सुरेश्वरः ॥८॥
8. skanda uvāca ,
kimindraḥ sarvalokānāṁ karotīha tapodhanāḥ ,
kathaṁ devagaṇāṁścaiva pāti nityaṁ sureśvaraḥ.
8. skanda uvāca kim indraḥ sarva-lokānām karoti iha tapodhanāḥ
katham deva-gaṇān ca eva pāti nityam sura-īśvaraḥ
8. Skanda said: "O ascetics (tapas), what does Indra do here for all beings? How does the lord of gods constantly protect the hosts of deities?"
ऋषय ऊचुः ।
इन्द्रो दिशति भूतानां बलं तेजः प्रजाः सुखम् ।
तुष्टः प्रयच्छति तथा सर्वान्दायान्सुरेश्वरः ॥९॥
9. ṛṣaya ūcuḥ ,
indro diśati bhūtānāṁ balaṁ tejaḥ prajāḥ sukham ,
tuṣṭaḥ prayacchati tathā sarvāndāyānsureśvaraḥ.
9. ṛṣayaḥ ūcuḥ indraḥ diśati bhūtānām balam tejaḥ prajāḥ
sukham tuṣṭaḥ prayacchati tathā sarvān dāyān sura-īśvaraḥ
9. The sages said: "Indra bestows strength, vitality, progeny, and happiness upon all beings. Likewise, when he is pleased, the lord of gods grants all boons."
दुर्वृत्तानां संहरति वृत्तस्थानां प्रयच्छति ।
अनुशास्ति च भूतानि कार्येषु बलसूदनः ॥१०॥
10. durvṛttānāṁ saṁharati vṛttasthānāṁ prayacchati ,
anuśāsti ca bhūtāni kāryeṣu balasūdanaḥ.
10. durvṛttānām saṃharati vṛtta-sthānām prayacchati
anuśāsti ca bhūtāni kāryeṣu bala-sūdanaḥ
10. He destroys the wicked and bestows gifts upon those who abide by (natural law) dharma. And that destroyer of hostile forces (balasūdana) governs all beings in their actions.
असूर्ये च भवेत्सूर्यस्तथाचन्द्रे च चन्द्रमाः ।
भवत्यग्निश्च वायुश्च पृथिव्यापश्च कारणैः ॥११॥
11. asūrye ca bhavetsūryastathācandre ca candramāḥ ,
bhavatyagniśca vāyuśca pṛthivyāpaśca kāraṇaiḥ.
11. asūrye ca bhavet sūryaḥ tathā candre ca candramāḥ
bhavati agniḥ ca vāyuḥ ca pṛthivī āpaḥ ca kāraṇaiḥ
11. When there is no sun, let the sun be (created); and likewise, when there is no moon, let the moon be (created). Fire, air, earth, and water also manifest through (their respective) causes.
एतदिन्द्रेण कर्तव्यमिन्द्रे हि विपुलं बलम् ।
त्वं च वीर बलश्रेष्ठस्तस्मादिन्द्रो भवस्व नः ॥१२॥
12. etadindreṇa kartavyamindre hi vipulaṁ balam ,
tvaṁ ca vīra balaśreṣṭhastasmādindro bhavasva naḥ.
12. etat indreṇa kartavyam indre hi vipulam balam tvam
ca vīra balaśreṣṭhaḥ tasmāt indraḥ bhavasva naḥ
12. This should be done by Indra, for in Indra there is indeed great strength. And you, O hero, are the mightiest; therefore, become our Indra (king of the gods)!
शक्र उवाच ।
भवस्वेन्द्रो महाबाहो सर्वेषां नः सुखावहः ।
अभिषिच्यस्व चैवाद्य प्राप्तरूपोऽसि सत्तम ॥१३॥
13. śakra uvāca ,
bhavasvendro mahābāho sarveṣāṁ naḥ sukhāvahaḥ ,
abhiṣicyasva caivādya prāptarūpo'si sattama.
13. śakraḥ uvāca bhavasva indraḥ mahābāho sarveṣām naḥ
sukhāvahaḥ abhiṣicyasva ca eva adya prāptarūpaḥ asi sattama
13. Shakra said: O mighty-armed one, become our Indra (king of the gods), bringing happiness to all of us. Consecrate yourself right now, for you are indeed fit, O best one!
स्कन्द उवाच ।
शाधि त्वमेव त्रैलोक्यमव्यग्रो विजये रतः ।
अहं ते किंकरः शक्र न ममेन्द्रत्वमीप्सितम् ॥१४॥
14. skanda uvāca ,
śādhi tvameva trailokyamavyagro vijaye rataḥ ,
ahaṁ te kiṁkaraḥ śakra na mamendratvamīpsitam.
14. skandaḥ uvāca śādhi tvam eva trailokyam avyagraḥ vijaye
rataḥ aham te kiṅkaraḥ śakra na mama indratvam īpsitam
14. Skanda said: You yourself, free from anxiety and dedicated to victory, should rule the three worlds. O Shakra, I am your servant; the position of Indra (indratvam) is not desired by me.
शक्र उवाच ।
बलं तवाद्भुतं वीर त्वं देवानामरीञ्जहि ।
अवज्ञास्यन्ति मां लोका वीर्येण तव विस्मिताः ॥१५॥
15. śakra uvāca ,
balaṁ tavādbhutaṁ vīra tvaṁ devānāmarīñjahi ,
avajñāsyanti māṁ lokā vīryeṇa tava vismitāḥ.
15. śakraḥ uvāca | balam tava adbhutam vīra tvam devānām
arīn jahi | avajñāsyanti mām lokāḥ vīryeṇa tava vismitāḥ
15. Śakra said: "O hero, your strength is astonishing! Slay the enemies of the gods. People will disregard me, astonished by your valor."
इन्द्रत्वेऽपि स्थितं वीर बलहीनं पराजितम् ।
आवयोश्च मिथो भेदे प्रयतिष्यन्त्यतन्द्रिताः ॥१६॥
16. indratve'pi sthitaṁ vīra balahīnaṁ parājitam ,
āvayośca mitho bhede prayatiṣyantyatandritāḥ.
16. indratve api sthitam vīra balahīnam parājitam |
āvayoḥ ca mithaḥ bhede prayatiṣyanti atandritāḥ
16. O hero, if I, even while being Indra, am seen as weak and defeated, and if a division occurs between the two of us, then those who are diligent will strive to exploit it.
भेदिते च त्वयि विभो लोको द्वैधमुपेष्यति ।
द्विधाभूतेषु लोकेषु निश्चितेष्वावयोस्तथा ।
विग्रहः संप्रवर्तेत भूतभेदान्महाबल ॥१७॥
17. bhedite ca tvayi vibho loko dvaidhamupeṣyati ,
dvidhābhūteṣu lokeṣu niściteṣvāvayostathā ,
vigrahaḥ saṁpravarteta bhūtabhedānmahābala.
17. bhedite ca tvayi vibho lokaḥ dvaidham
upeṣyati | dvidhābhūteṣu lokeṣu
niściteṣu āvayoḥ tathā | vigrahaḥ
sampravartera bhūtabhedāt mahābala
17. And, O mighty one, if you are divided, the world will become twofold. When people are thus divided and our positions are clearly established, a conflict will arise among the various beings, O mighty-armed one.
तत्र त्वं मां रणे तात यथाश्रद्धं विजेष्यसि ।
तस्मादिन्द्रो भवानद्य भविता मा विचारय ॥१८॥
18. tatra tvaṁ māṁ raṇe tāta yathāśraddhaṁ vijeṣyasi ,
tasmādindro bhavānadya bhavitā mā vicāraya.
18. tatra tvam mām raṇe tāta yathāśraddham vijeṣyasi
| tasmāt indraḥ bhavān adya bhavitā mā vicāraya
18. Then, O dear one, you will defeat me in battle according to your devotion (śraddhā). Therefore, you shall be Indra from today; do not doubt this.
स्कन्द उवाच ।
त्वमेव राजा भद्रं ते त्रैलोक्यस्य ममैव च ।
करोमि किं च ते शक्र शासनं तद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥१९॥
19. skanda uvāca ,
tvameva rājā bhadraṁ te trailokyasya mamaiva ca ,
karomi kiṁ ca te śakra śāsanaṁ tadbravīhi me.
19. skanda uvāca | tvam eva rājā bhadram te trailokyasya mama
eva ca | karomi kim ca te śakra śāsanam tat bravīhi me
19. Skanda said: "You are indeed the king; may good fortune be upon you in the three worlds, and upon me too. O Śakra, what command shall I carry out for you? Please tell me that."
शक्र उवाच ।
यदि सत्यमिदं वाक्यं निश्चयाद्भाषितं त्वया ।
यदि वा शासनं स्कन्द कर्तुमिच्छसि मे शृणु ॥२०॥
20. śakra uvāca ,
yadi satyamidaṁ vākyaṁ niścayādbhāṣitaṁ tvayā ,
yadi vā śāsanaṁ skanda kartumicchasi me śṛṇu.
20. śakra uvāca | yadi satyam idam vākyam niścayāt bhāṣitam
tvayā | yadi vā śāsanam skanda kartum icchasi me śṛṇu
20. Śakra said: "If this statement, spoken by you with certainty, is true, or if you, O Skanda, wish to carry out my command, then listen to me."
अभिषिच्यस्व देवानां सेनापत्ये महाबल ।
अहमिन्द्रो भविष्यामि तव वाक्यान्महाबल ॥२१॥
21. abhiṣicyasva devānāṁ senāpatye mahābala ,
ahamindro bhaviṣyāmi tava vākyānmahābala.
21. abhiṣicyasva devānām senāpatye mahābala |
aham indraḥ bhaviṣyāmi tava vākyāt mahābala
21. O mighty one, anoint yourself as the commander-in-chief of the gods. O mighty one, I will become Indra through your words.
स्कन्द उवाच ।
दानवानां विनाशाय देवानामर्थसिद्धये ।
गोब्राह्मणस्य त्राणार्थं सेनापत्येऽभिषिञ्च माम् ॥२२॥
22. skanda uvāca ,
dānavānāṁ vināśāya devānāmarthasiddhaye ,
gobrāhmaṇasya trāṇārthaṁ senāpatye'bhiṣiñca mām.
22. skanda uvāca | dānavānām vināśāya devānām artha-siddhaye
| go-brāhmaṇasya trāṇa-artham senāpatye abhiṣiñca mām
22. Skanda said: "Anoint me as commander-in-chief for the destruction of the dānavas, for the success of the gods' purpose, and for the protection of cows and brāhmaṇas."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
सोऽभिषिक्तो मघवता सर्वैर्देवगणैः सह ।
अतीव शुशुभे तत्र पूज्यमानो महर्षिभिः ॥२३॥
23. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
so'bhiṣikto maghavatā sarvairdevagaṇaiḥ saha ,
atīva śuśubhe tatra pūjyamāno maharṣibhiḥ.
23. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca saḥ abhiṣiktaḥ maghavatā sarvaiḥ
devagaṇaiḥ saha atīva śuśubhe tatra pūjyamānaḥ maharṣibhiḥ
23. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Being consecrated by Indra (Maghavan) along with all the hosts of gods, he shone exceedingly splendidly there, being worshipped by the great sages.
तस्य तत्काञ्चनं छत्रं ध्रियमाणं व्यरोचत ।
यथैव सुसमिद्धस्य पावकस्यात्ममण्डलम् ॥२४॥
24. tasya tatkāñcanaṁ chatraṁ dhriyamāṇaṁ vyarocata ,
yathaiva susamiddhasya pāvakasyātmamaṇḍalam.
24. tasya tat kāñcanam chatram dhriyamāṇam vyarocata
yathā eva susamiddhasya pāvakasya ātma-maṇḍalam
24. His golden umbrella, being held aloft, shone brightly, just like the self-luminous orb of a well-kindled fire.
विश्वकर्मकृता चास्य दिव्या माला हिरण्मयी ।
आबद्धा त्रिपुरघ्नेन स्वयमेव यशस्विना ॥२५॥
25. viśvakarmakṛtā cāsya divyā mālā hiraṇmayī ,
ābaddhā tripuraghnena svayameva yaśasvinā.
25. viśvakarmakṛtā ca asya divyā mālā hiraṇmayī
ābaddhā tripuraghnena svayam eva yaśasvinā
25. And his divine golden garland, crafted by Viśvakarman, was personally bound by the glorious destroyer of the three cities (Śiva).
आगम्य मनुजव्याघ्र सह देव्या परंतप ।
अर्चयामास सुप्रीतो भगवान्गोवृषध्वजः ॥२६॥
26. āgamya manujavyāghra saha devyā paraṁtapa ,
arcayāmāsa suprīto bhagavāngovṛṣadhvajaḥ.
26. āgamya manujavyāghra saha devyā paraṃtapaḥ
arcayāmāsa suprītaḥ bhagavān govṛṣadhvajaḥ
26. O tiger among men, O scorcher of foes! The greatly pleased and revered bull-bannered one (Śiva) arrived with the Goddess (Pārvatī) and performed worship.
रुद्रमग्निं द्विजाः प्राहू रुद्रसूनुस्ततस्तु सः ।
रुद्रेण शुक्रमुत्सृष्टं तच्छ्वेतः पर्वतोऽभवत् ।
पावकस्येन्द्रियं श्वेते कृत्तिकाभिः कृतं नगे ॥२७॥
27. rudramagniṁ dvijāḥ prāhū rudrasūnustatastu saḥ ,
rudreṇa śukramutsṛṣṭaṁ tacchvetaḥ parvato'bhavat ,
pāvakasyendriyaṁ śvete kṛttikābhiḥ kṛtaṁ nage.
27. rudram agnim dvijāḥ prāhuḥ rudrasūnuḥ
tataḥ tu saḥ rudreṇa śukram utsṛṣṭam
tat śvetaḥ parvataḥ abhavat pāvakasya
indriyam śvete kṛttikābhiḥ kṛtam nage
27. The twice-born ones (dvija) declare Agni (Agni) to be Rudra, and therefore, he is also Rudra's son. When Rudra emitted his semen, that became the white mountain. The virility of Fire (Agni) was then placed on the white mountain by the Krittikas.
पूज्यमानं तु रुद्रेण दृष्ट्वा सर्वे दिवौकसः ।
रुद्रसूनुं ततः प्राहुर्गुहं गुणवतां वरम् ॥२८॥
28. pūjyamānaṁ tu rudreṇa dṛṣṭvā sarve divaukasaḥ ,
rudrasūnuṁ tataḥ prāhurguhaṁ guṇavatāṁ varam.
28. pūjyamānam tu rudreṇa dṛṣṭvā sarve divaukasaḥ
rudrasūnum tataḥ prāhuḥ guham guṇavatām varam
28. And having seen him being honored by Rudra, all the gods (divaukasaḥ) then called him Guha, the son of Rudra, the best among the virtuous.
अनुप्रविश्य रुद्रेण वह्निं जातो ह्ययं शिशुः ।
तत्र जातस्ततः स्कन्दो रुद्रसूनुस्ततोऽभवत् ॥२९॥
29. anupraviśya rudreṇa vahniṁ jāto hyayaṁ śiśuḥ ,
tatra jātastataḥ skando rudrasūnustato'bhavat.
29. anupraviśya rudreṇa vahnim jātaḥ hi ayam śiśuḥ
tatra jātaḥ tataḥ skandaḥ rudrasūnuḥ tataḥ abhavat
29. Having entered Agni (Agni) by Rudra, this child was indeed born. Skanda was then born there, and thus he became the son of Rudra.
रुद्रस्य वह्नेः स्वाहायाः षण्णां स्त्रीणां च तेजसा ।
जातः स्कन्दः सुरश्रेष्ठो रुद्रसूनुस्ततोऽभवत् ॥३०॥
30. rudrasya vahneḥ svāhāyāḥ ṣaṇṇāṁ strīṇāṁ ca tejasā ,
jātaḥ skandaḥ suraśreṣṭho rudrasūnustato'bhavat.
30. rudrasya vahneḥ svāhāyāḥ ṣaṇṇām strīṇām ca tejasā
jātaḥ skandaḥ suraśreṣṭhaḥ rudrasūnuḥ tataḥ abhavat
30. Skanda, the best among the gods, was born from the essence of Rudra, Agni (Agni), and Svāhā, and also from the essence of the six (Krittika) women. Therefore, he became known as Rudra's son.
अरजे वाससी रक्ते वसानः पावकात्मजः ।
भाति दीप्तवपुः श्रीमान्रक्ताभ्राभ्यामिवांशुमान् ॥३१॥
31. araje vāsasī rakte vasānaḥ pāvakātmajaḥ ,
bhāti dīptavapuḥ śrīmānraktābhrābhyāmivāṁśumān.
31. araje vāsasī rakte vasānaḥ pāvakātmajaḥ bhāti
dīptavapuḥ śrīmān raktābhrābhyām iva aṃśumān
31. The glorious son of fire (pāvakātmaja), wearing two spotless, red garments, shines with a blazing body, like the sun [shining] through two red clouds.
कुक्कुटश्चाग्निना दत्तस्तस्य केतुरलंकृतः ।
रथे समुच्छ्रितो भाति कालाग्निरिव लोहितः ॥३२॥
32. kukkuṭaścāgninā dattastasya keturalaṁkṛtaḥ ,
rathe samucchrito bhāti kālāgniriva lohitaḥ.
32. kukkuṭaḥ ca agninā dattaḥ tasya ketuḥ alaṃkṛtaḥ
rathe samucchritaḥ bhāti kālāgniḥ iva lohitaḥ
32. And his decorated banner, bearing a cock (kukkuṭa) given by Agni, hoisted high on his chariot, shines, crimson like the destructive fire of time (kālāgni).
विवेश कवचं चास्य शरीरं सहजं ततः ।
युध्यमानस्य देवस्य प्रादुर्भवति तत्सदा ॥३३॥
33. viveśa kavacaṁ cāsya śarīraṁ sahajaṁ tataḥ ,
yudhyamānasya devasya prādurbhavati tatsadā.
33. viveśa kavacam ca asya śarīram sahajam tataḥ
yudhyamānasya devasya prādurbhavati tat sadā
33. And his innate armor (kavaca) entered his body. Thereafter, that (armor) always manifests whenever the god is fighting.
शक्तिर्वर्म बलं तेजः कान्तत्वं सत्यमक्षतिः ।
ब्रह्मण्यत्वमसंमोहो भक्तानां परिरक्षणम् ॥३४॥
34. śaktirvarma balaṁ tejaḥ kāntatvaṁ satyamakṣatiḥ ,
brahmaṇyatvamasaṁmoho bhaktānāṁ parirakṣaṇam.
34. śaktiḥ varma balam tejaḥ kāntatvam satyam akṣatiḥ
brahmaṇyatvam asaṃmohaḥ bhaktānām parirakṣaṇam
34. His attributes are power (śakti), armor, strength, brilliance, attractiveness, truth, invulnerability, devotion to Brahmins (brahmaṇyatvam), freedom from delusion, and the protection of his devotees.
निकृन्तनं च शत्रूणां लोकानां चाभिरक्षणम् ।
स्कन्देन सह जातानि सर्वाण्येव जनाधिप ॥३५॥
35. nikṛntanaṁ ca śatrūṇāṁ lokānāṁ cābhirakṣaṇam ,
skandena saha jātāni sarvāṇyeva janādhipa.
35. nikṛntanam ca śatrūṇām lokānām ca abhirakṣaṇam
skandena saha jātāni sarvāṇi eva janādhipa
35. O King (janādhipa), both the destruction of enemies and the protection of the worlds (lokānām) were all born simultaneously with Skanda.
एवं देवगणैः सर्वैः सोऽभिषिक्तः स्वलंकृतः ।
बभौ प्रतीतः सुमनाः परिपूर्णेन्दुदर्शनः ॥३६॥
36. evaṁ devagaṇaiḥ sarvaiḥ so'bhiṣiktaḥ svalaṁkṛtaḥ ,
babhau pratītaḥ sumanāḥ paripūrṇendudarśanaḥ.
36. evam devagaṇaiḥ sarvaiḥ saḥ abhiṣiktaḥ svalaṅkṛtaḥ
babhau pratītaḥ sumanāḥ paripūrṇendudarśanaḥ
36. Thus, having been consecrated by all the hosts of gods and well-adorned, he shone, pleased and cheerful, appearing like the full moon.
इष्टैः स्वाध्यायघोषैश्च देवतूर्यरवैरपि ।
देवगन्धर्वगीतैश्च सर्वैरप्सरसां गणैः ॥३७॥
37. iṣṭaiḥ svādhyāyaghoṣaiśca devatūryaravairapi ,
devagandharvagītaiśca sarvairapsarasāṁ gaṇaiḥ.
37. iṣṭaiḥ svādhyāyaghoṣaiḥ ca devatūryaravaiḥ api
devagandharvagītaiḥ ca sarvaiḥ apsarasām gaṇaiḥ
37. He was honored with pleasant recitations of Vedic study (svādhyāyaghoṣaiḥ), with the sounds of divine trumpets, and with songs sung by divine Gandharvas, and by all the hosts of Apsaras (apsarasām).
एतैश्चान्यैश्च विविधैर्हृष्टतुष्टैरलंकृतैः ।
क्रीडन्निव तदा देवैरभिषिक्तः स पावकिः ॥३८॥
38. etaiścānyaiśca vividhairhṛṣṭatuṣṭairalaṁkṛtaiḥ ,
krīḍanniva tadā devairabhiṣiktaḥ sa pāvakiḥ.
38. etaiḥ ca anyaiḥ ca vividhaiḥ hṛṣṭatuṣṭaiḥ alaṅkṛtaiḥ
krīdan iva tadā devaiḥ abhiṣiktaḥ saḥ pāvakiḥ
38. Then, consecrated by these and other various gods—who were gladdened, satisfied, and adorned—that son of Agni (Pāvaki) played as if in sport.
अभिषिक्तं महासेनमपश्यन्त दिवौकसः ।
विनिहत्य तमः सूर्यं यथेहाभ्युदितं तथा ॥३९॥
39. abhiṣiktaṁ mahāsenamapaśyanta divaukasaḥ ,
vinihatya tamaḥ sūryaṁ yathehābhyuditaṁ tathā.
39. abhiṣiktaṃ mahāsenaṃ apaśyanta divaukasaḥ
vinihatya tamaḥ sūryam yathā iha abhyuditaṃ tathā
39. The gods beheld the consecrated Mahāsena, just as the sun rises in this world after dispelling darkness.
अथैनमभ्ययुः सर्वा देवसेनाः सहस्रशः ।
अस्माकं त्वं पतिरिति ब्रुवाणाः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥४०॥
40. athainamabhyayuḥ sarvā devasenāḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
asmākaṁ tvaṁ patiriti bruvāṇāḥ sarvatodiśam.
40. atha enam abhyayuḥ sarvāḥ devasenāḥ sahasraśaḥ
asmākaṃ tvaṃ patiḥ iti bruvāṇāḥ sarvatodiśam
40. Then, all the divine armies, by the thousands, approached him from all directions, proclaiming, 'You are our lord!'
ताः समासाद्य भगवान्सर्वभूतगणैर्वृतः ।
अर्चितश्च स्तुतश्चैव सान्त्वयामास ता अपि ॥४१॥
41. tāḥ samāsādya bhagavānsarvabhūtagaṇairvṛtaḥ ,
arcitaśca stutaścaiva sāntvayāmāsa tā api.
41. tāḥ samāsādya bhagavān sarvabhūtagaṇaiḥ vṛtaḥ
arcitaḥ ca stutaḥ ca eva sāntvayāmāsa tāḥ api
41. Having approached them, the venerable Skanda (Bhagavān), surrounded by all hosts of beings, and indeed worshipped and praised, also consoled them.
शतक्रतुश्चाभिषिच्य स्कन्दं सेनापतिं तदा ।
सस्मार तां देवसेनां या सा तेन विमोक्षिता ॥४२॥
42. śatakratuścābhiṣicya skandaṁ senāpatiṁ tadā ,
sasmāra tāṁ devasenāṁ yā sā tena vimokṣitā.
42. śatakratuḥ ca abhiṣicya skandam senāpatim tadā
sasmāra tām devasenām yā sā tena vimokṣitā
42. ca tadā śatakratuḥ skandam senāpatim abhiṣicya
tām devasenām yā sā tena vimokṣitā sasmāra
42. And then, Śatakratu (Indra), having appointed Skanda as the commander-in-chief, remembered Devasenā, who had been liberated by him (Skanda).
अयं तस्याः पतिर्नूनं विहितो ब्रह्मणा स्वयम् ।
इति चिन्त्यानयामास देवसेनां स्वलंकृताम् ॥४३॥
43. ayaṁ tasyāḥ patirnūnaṁ vihito brahmaṇā svayam ,
iti cintyānayāmāsa devasenāṁ svalaṁkṛtām.
43. ayam tasyāḥ patiḥ nūnam vihitaḥ brahmaṇā svayam
iti cintyānayāmāsa devasenām svalaṅkṛtām
43. He caused the beautifully adorned Devī Senā to think, 'This man is certainly her husband, ordained by Brahmā himself.'
स्कन्दं चोवाच बलभिदियं कन्या सुरोत्तम ।
अजाते त्वयि निर्दिष्टा तव पत्नी स्वयंभुवा ॥४४॥
44. skandaṁ covāca balabhidiyaṁ kanyā surottama ,
ajāte tvayi nirdiṣṭā tava patnī svayaṁbhuvā.
44. skandam ca uvāca balabhit iyam kanyā surottama
ajāte tvayi nirdiṣṭā tava patnī svayambhuvā
44. And Indra said to Skanda, 'O best among the gods, this maiden was designated by the Self-Existent (Brahmā) as your wife even before your birth.'
तस्मात्त्वमस्या विधिवत्पाणिं मन्त्रपुरस्कृतम् ।
गृहाण दक्षिणं देव्याः पाणिना पद्मवर्चसम् ॥४५॥
45. tasmāttvamasyā vidhivatpāṇiṁ mantrapuraskṛtam ,
gṛhāṇa dakṣiṇaṁ devyāḥ pāṇinā padmavarcasam.
45. tasmāt tvam asyāḥ vidhivat pāṇim mantrapuraskṛtam
gṛhāṇa dakṣiṇam devyāḥ pāṇinā padmavarcasam
45. Therefore, you should ritually take her right hand – the goddess's hand, radiant like a lotus and consecrated by sacred verses (mantra) – with your own hand.
एवमुक्तः स जग्राह तस्याः पाणिं यथाविधि ।
बृहस्पतिर्मन्त्रविधिं जजाप च जुहाव च ॥४६॥
46. evamuktaḥ sa jagrāha tasyāḥ pāṇiṁ yathāvidhi ,
bṛhaspatirmantravidhiṁ jajāpa ca juhāva ca.
46. evam uktaḥ saḥ jagrāha tasyāḥ pāṇim yathāvidhi
bṛhaspatiḥ mantravidhim jajāpa ca juhāva ca
46. Thus spoken to, he took her hand in accordance with the rites. And Bṛhaspati chanted the sacred verses (mantra) of the ritual and performed the oblations.
एवं स्कन्दस्य महिषीं देवसेनां विदुर्बुधाः ।
षष्ठीं यां ब्राह्मणाः प्राहुर्लक्ष्मीमाशां सुखप्रदाम् ।
सिनीवालीं कुहूं चैव सद्वृत्तिमपराजिताम् ॥४७॥
47. evaṁ skandasya mahiṣīṁ devasenāṁ vidurbudhāḥ ,
ṣaṣṭhīṁ yāṁ brāhmaṇāḥ prāhurlakṣmīmāśāṁ sukhapradām ,
sinīvālīṁ kuhūṁ caiva sadvṛttimaparājitām.
47. evam skandasya mahiṣīm devasenām viduḥ
budhāḥ | ṣaṣṭhīm yām brāhmaṇāḥ
prāhuḥ lakṣmīm āśām sukhapradām |
sinīvālīm kuhūm ca eva sadvṛttim aparājitām
47. Thus, wise people know Skanda's chief queen as Devasenā. The brāhmaṇas call her the sixth form of Lakṣmī, who grants desires and bestows happiness, and also Sinīvālī, Kuhū, Sadvṛtti, and Aparājitā.
यदा स्कन्दः पतिर्लब्धः शाश्वतो देवसेनया ।
तदा तमाश्रयल्लक्ष्मीः स्वयं देवी शरीरिणी ॥४८॥
48. yadā skandaḥ patirlabdhaḥ śāśvato devasenayā ,
tadā tamāśrayallakṣmīḥ svayaṁ devī śarīriṇī.
48. yadā skandaḥ patiḥ labdhaḥ śāśvataḥ devasenayā
| tadā tam āśrayat lakṣmīḥ svayam devī śarīriṇī
48. When Skanda, the eternal one, was obtained as a husband by Devasenā, then the goddess Lakṣmī herself, embodied, took refuge in him.
श्रीजुष्टः पञ्चमीं स्कन्दस्तस्माच्छ्रीपञ्चमी स्मृता ।
षष्ठ्यां कृतार्थोऽभूद्यस्मात्तस्मात्षष्ठी महातिथिः ॥४९॥
49. śrījuṣṭaḥ pañcamīṁ skandastasmācchrīpañcamī smṛtā ,
ṣaṣṭhyāṁ kṛtārtho'bhūdyasmāttasmātṣaṣṭhī mahātithiḥ.
49. śrījuṣṭaḥ pañcamīm skandaḥ tasmāt śrīpañcamī smṛtā |
ṣaṣṭhyām kṛtārthaḥ abhūt yasmāt tasmāt ṣaṣṭhī mahātithiḥ
49. Because Skanda was endowed with glory (śrī) on the fifth day, therefore the fifth day is remembered as Śrīpañcamī. And because he achieved his purpose on the sixth day, therefore the sixth day is a great festival (mahātithi).
