Śalya said: "Then, having seen her, Nahuṣa, who was then the king of the gods, addressed her: 'O woman with a pure smile, I am now the Indra of all three worlds. O woman with beautiful hips, O woman of excellent complexion, accept me as your husband!'"

But that goddess, who was devoted to her husband (pativratā), having been addressed thus by Nahuṣa, trembled violently, agitated by fear, just like a banana plant in a strong wind.

She, revering Brahmā and placing her hands together in a reverential gesture (añjali) on her head, then spoke to Nahuṣa, the king of the gods, who was terrible to behold.

“But, after learning this truth (about Śakra's whereabouts), if it is still unknown, O Lord, then I shall present myself before you. I tell you this truth.” When Indrāṇī spoke thus, Nahuṣa was filled with joy.

The experts in speech, feeling distressed, approached the powerful god of gods, Viṣṇu, and spoke these words to him.

10.
Indeed, Śakra, the lord of the hosts of gods, is overwhelmed by the sin of killing a brahmin (brahmahatyā). You are our refuge, O lord of gods, the primordial one and master of the universe. You have assumed the form of Viṣṇu for the protection of all beings.

Due to your valor, Vṛtra was slain. Indra (Vāsava) has become afflicted by the sin of killing a brahmin (brahmahatyā). O best among the hosts of gods, please declare the means of his liberation (mokṣa).

15.
Upon hearing that auspicious and true speech of Viṣṇu, which was like nectar, all the hosts of gods, along with their preceptors and sages, then proceeded to the place where Śakra (Indra) was agitated by fear.

16.
O king, there a very great horse sacrifice (aśvamedha) was performed by the noble (mahātman) Mahendra (Indra) for the purpose of purification and for expiating the sin of killing a brahmin (brahmahatyā).

O Yudhiṣṭhira, having distributed the sin of brahmin-killing (brahmahatyā) among trees, rivers, mountains, the earth, and also among women...

And having thoroughly distributed (the sin) among all beings and having cast it off, the lord of the gods (Indra) - Vāsava - became free from distress, purified of sin, and self-possessed (ātman).

And having seen Nahusha, who was unshakeable from his position, unbearable due to his boon, and destructive of the brilliance of all beings, the slayer of Bala (Indra)...

20.
Then, the heroic husband of Shaci (Indra) disappeared once again. Invisible to all beings, he wandered, awaiting the opportune moment.

21.
But then, with Indra having disappeared, Shaci, overcome with sorrow, lamented greatly distressed, crying, "Alas, Indra!"

If any gift (dāna) has been given, if any offering has been made (in the sacred fire), if elders and teachers (guru) have been pleased; and if truth (satya) truly exists in me, then let my state of having only one husband continue.

And she, devout and pure, there worshipped the divine Night (devī niśā). Then, by the power of her devotion to her husband (pativratā) and her truthfulness, she brought forth an oracle (upaśruti).

25.
'Show me that place where the king of gods (Indra) dwells!' Thus said the divine lady (Damayantī) to the oracle (upaśruti). (The oracle replied): 'Let the truth be revealed through truth.'
