ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा स्वां सेनां समचोदयत् ।
प्रतिव्यूहन्ननीकानि भीष्मस्य भरतर्षभ ॥१॥

1. Sanjaya said: Then King Yudhishthira, O best of Bharatas, urged on his own army, counter-arraying the divisions against Bhishma's forces.
यथोद्दिष्टान्यनीकानि प्रत्यव्यूहन्त पाण्डवाः ।
स्वर्गं परमभीप्सन्तः सुयुद्धेन कुरूद्वहाः ॥२॥
2. yathoddiṣṭānyanīkāni pratyavyūhanta pāṇḍavāḥ ,
svargaṁ paramabhīpsantaḥ suyuddhena kurūdvahāḥ.

2. O foremost of Kurus, the Pandavas, desiring supreme heaven through valiant combat, counter-arrayed their divisions just as they had been instructed.
मध्ये शिखण्डिनोऽनीकं रक्षितं सव्यसाचिना ।
धृष्टद्युम्नस्य च स्वयं भीमेन परिपालितम् ॥३॥
3. madhye śikhaṇḍino'nīkaṁ rakṣitaṁ savyasācinā ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnasya ca svayaṁ bhīmena paripālitam.

3. In the center, Shikhandi's division was protected by Savyasaci (Arjuna), while Dhristadyumna's own was personally guarded by Bhima.
अनीकं दक्षिणं राजन्युयुधानेन पालितम् ।
श्रीमता सात्वताग्र्येण शक्रेणेव धनुष्मता ॥४॥
4. anīkaṁ dakṣiṇaṁ rājanyuyudhānena pālitam ,
śrīmatā sātvatāgryeṇa śakreṇeva dhanuṣmatā.

4. O King, the southern division was protected by Yuyudhana, the glorious and foremost among the Satvatas, like by Indra, the wielder of the bow.
महेन्द्रयानप्रतिमं रथं तु सोपस्करं हाटकरत्नचित्रम् ।
युधिष्ठिरः काञ्चनभाण्डयोक्त्रं समास्थितो नागकुलस्य मध्ये ॥५॥
5. mahendrayānapratimaṁ rathaṁ tu; sopaskaraṁ hāṭakaratnacitram ,
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ kāñcanabhāṇḍayoktraṁ; samāsthito nāgakulasya madhye.

5. Yudhishthira mounted his chariot (ratha), which resembled the vehicle of Mahendra, fully equipped and adorned with gold and jewels, and fitted with golden vessels and harnesses, amidst a multitude of elephants.
समुच्छ्रितं दान्तशलाकमस्य सुपाण्डुरं छत्रमतीव भाति ।
प्रदक्षिणं चैनमुपाचरन्ति महर्षयः संस्तुतिभिर्नरेन्द्रम् ॥६॥
6. samucchritaṁ dāntaśalākamasya; supāṇḍuraṁ chatramatīva bhāti ,
pradakṣiṇaṁ cainamupācaranti; maharṣayaḥ saṁstutibhirnarendram.

supāṇḍuram chatram atīva bhāti |
pradakṣiṇam ca enam upācaranti

6. His very white, high-raised umbrella, with its ivory staff, shone exceedingly. And great sages (maharṣayaḥ) circumambulated the king clockwise, attending him with praises.
पुरोहिताः शत्रुवधं वदन्तो महर्षिवृद्धाः श्रुतवन्त एव ।
जप्यैश्च मन्त्रैश्च तथौषधीभिः समन्ततः स्वस्त्ययनं प्रचक्रुः ॥७॥
7. purohitāḥ śatruvadhaṁ vadanto; maharṣivṛddhāḥ śrutavanta eva ,
japyaiśca mantraiśca tathauṣadhībhiḥ; samantataḥ svastyayanaṁ pracakruḥ.

7. Priests (purohitāḥ), elderly and learned great sages, spoke of the destruction of enemies. From all sides, they performed auspicious rituals (svastyayana) with recitations, sacred chants (mantras), and herbs.
ततः स वस्त्राणि तथैव गाश्च फलानि पुष्पाणि तथैव निष्कान् ।
कुरूत्तमो ब्राह्मणसान्महात्मा कुर्वन्ययौ शक्र इवामरेभ्यः ॥८॥
8. tataḥ sa vastrāṇi tathaiva gāśca; phalāni puṣpāṇi tathaiva niṣkān ,
kurūttamo brāhmaṇasānmahātmā; kurvanyayau śakra ivāmarebhyaḥ.
8. tataḥ saḥ vastrāṇi tathā eva gāḥ ca
phalāni puṣpāṇi tathā eva niṣkān
| kurūttamaḥ brāhmaṇasāt mahātmā

8. Then, the great-souled (mahātmā) Yudhishthira, the best of the Kurus, proceeded, offering garments, cows, fruits, flowers, and gold coins to the Brahmins, just as Indra (Śakra) offers to the gods.
सहस्रसूर्यः शतकिङ्किणीकः परार्ध्यजाम्बूनदहेमचित्रः ।
रथोऽर्जुनस्याग्निरिवार्चिमाली विभ्राजते श्वेतहयः सुचक्रः ॥९॥
9. sahasrasūryaḥ śatakiṅkiṇīkaḥ; parārdhyajāmbūnadahemacitraḥ ,
ratho'rjunasyāgnirivārcimālī; vibhrājate śvetahayaḥ sucakraḥ.

arjunasya agniḥ iva arcimālī

9. Arjuna's chariot, radiant like a thousand suns and adorned with a hundred bells, is beautifully variegated with exceedingly valuable Jambunada gold. It shines brilliantly, like a blazing fire with a wreath of flames, and is equipped with white horses and excellent wheels.
तमास्थितः केशवसंगृहीतं कपिध्वजं गाण्डिवबाणहस्तः ।
धनुर्धरो यस्य समः पृथिव्यां न विद्यते नो भविता वा कदाचित् ॥१०॥
10. tamāsthitaḥ keśavasaṁgṛhītaṁ; kapidhvajaṁ gāṇḍivabāṇahastaḥ ,
dhanurdharo yasya samaḥ pṛthivyāṁ; na vidyate no bhavitā vā kadācit.
10. tam āsthitaḥ keśavasaṃgṛhītam
kapidhvajam gāṇḍīvabāṇahastaḥ
dhanurdharaḥ yasya samaḥ pṛthivyām
na vidyate no bhavitā vā kadācit

(saḥ) yasya samaḥ pṛthivyām
na vidyate na u vā kadācit bhavitā
10. Seated on that chariot, which is guided by Keśava (Krishna) and bears the monkey banner, is the archer (Arjuna) with his Gaṇḍīva bow and arrows in hand. There is no one on earth equal to him, nor will there ever be.
उद्वर्तयिष्यंस्तव पुत्रसेनामतीव रौद्रं स बिभर्ति रूपम् ।
अनायुधो यः सुभुजो भुजाभ्यां नराश्वनागान्युधि भस्म कुर्यात् ॥११॥
11. udvartayiṣyaṁstava putrasenā;matīva raudraṁ sa bibharti rūpam ,
anāyudho yaḥ subhujo bhujābhyāṁ; narāśvanāgānyudhi bhasma kuryāt.

atīva raudram sa bibharti rūpam
anāyudhaḥ yaḥ subhujaḥ bhujābhyām
narāśvanāgān yudhi bhasma kuryāt
11. saḥ tava putrasenām udvartayiṣyan

yaḥ anāyudhaḥ subhujaḥ bhujābhyām
yudhi narāśvanāgān bhasma kuryāt
11. He (Bhīma) assumes an exceedingly terrible form, intending to utterly destroy your army of sons. Weaponless, with his powerful arms, he could turn men, horses, and elephants into ashes in battle.
स भीमसेनः सहितो यमाभ्यां वृकोदरो वीररथस्य गोप्ता ।
तं प्रेक्ष्य मत्तर्षभसिंहखेलं लोके महेन्द्रप्रतिमानकल्पम् ॥१२॥
12. sa bhīmasenaḥ sahito yamābhyāṁ; vṛkodaro vīrarathasya goptā ,
taṁ prekṣya mattarṣabhasiṁhakhelaṁ; loke mahendrapratimānakalpam.

tam prekṣya mattaṛṣabhasiṃhakhelam

12. That Bhīmasena, known as Vṛkodara, accompanied by the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva), acts as the protector of the heroic chariots. Seeing him, whose proud bearing is like a rutting bull or a lion, and who is considered comparable to the great Indra in the world...
समीक्ष्य सेनाग्रगतं दुरासदं प्रविव्यथुः पङ्कगता इवोष्ट्राः ।
वृकोदरं वारणराजदर्पं योधास्त्वदीया भयविग्नसत्त्वाः ॥१३॥
13. samīkṣya senāgragataṁ durāsadaṁ; pravivyathuḥ paṅkagatā ivoṣṭrāḥ ,
vṛkodaraṁ vāraṇarājadarpaṁ; yodhāstvadīyā bhayavignasattvāḥ.
13. samīkṣya senāgragataṃ durāsadaṃ
pravivyathuḥ paṅkagatāḥ iva
uṣṭrāḥ vṛkodaraṃ vāraṇarājadarpam
yodhāḥ tvadīyāḥ bhayavignasattvāḥ
13. tvadīyāḥ yodhāḥ bhayavignasattvāḥ,
senāgragataṃ durāsadaṃ vāraṇarājadarpam vṛkodaram samīkṣya,
paṅkagatāḥ uṣṭrāḥ iva,
pravivyathuḥ.
13. Your warriors, whose spirits were agitated by fear, trembled intensely, like camels stuck in mud, upon seeing Bhīma, who stood unassailable at the forefront of the army, displaying the pride of a king elephant.
अनीकमध्ये तिष्ठन्तं राजपुत्रं दुरासदम् ।
अब्रवीद्भरतश्रेष्ठं गुडाकेशं जनार्दनः ॥१४॥
14. anīkamadhye tiṣṭhantaṁ rājaputraṁ durāsadam ,
abravīdbharataśreṣṭhaṁ guḍākeśaṁ janārdanaḥ.
14. anīkamadhye tiṣṭhantam rājaputram durāsadam
abravīt bharataśreṣṭham guḍākeśam janārdanaḥ
14. janārdanaḥ anīkamadhye tiṣṭhantam durāsadam rājaputram bharataśreṣṭham guḍākeśam abravīt.
14. Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) addressed the best of the Bhāratas (Arjuna), Guḍākeśa (Arjuna), who stood unassailable amidst the army.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
य एष गोप्ता प्रतपन्बलस्थो यो नः सेनां सिंह इवेक्षते च ।
स एष भीष्मः कुरुवंशकेतुर्येनाहृतास्त्रिंशतो वाजिमेधाः ॥१५॥
15. vāsudeva uvāca ,
ya eṣa goptā pratapanbalastho; yo naḥ senāṁ siṁha ivekṣate ca ,
sa eṣa bhīṣmaḥ kuruvaṁśaketu;ryenāhṛtāstriṁśato vājimedhāḥ.
15. vāsudevaḥ uvāca | yaḥ eṣaḥ goptā pratapan
balasthaḥ yaḥ naḥ senām siṃhaḥ iva
īkṣate ca | saḥ eṣaḥ bhīṣmaḥ kuruvaṃśaketuḥ
yena āhṛtāḥ triṃśataḥ vājimedhāḥ
15. vāsudevaḥ uvāca yaḥ eṣaḥ goptā pratapan
balasthaḥ yaḥ naḥ senām siṃhaḥ iva
ca īkṣate saḥ eṣaḥ bhīṣmaḥ kuruvaṃśaketuḥ
yena triṃśataḥ vājimedhāḥ āhṛtāḥ
15. Vāsudeva spoke: "This protector, fiercely radiant and firm in strength, who watches our army like a lion – that is Bhishma, the banner of the Kuru lineage, by whom thirty horse Vedic rituals (yajñas) were performed."
एतान्यनीकानि महानुभावं गूहन्ति मेघा इव घर्मरश्मिम् ।
एतानि हत्वा पुरुषप्रवीर काङ्क्षस्व युद्धं भरतर्षभेण ॥१६॥
16. etānyanīkāni mahānubhāvaṁ; gūhanti meghā iva gharmaraśmim ,
etāni hatvā puruṣapravīra; kāṅkṣasva yuddhaṁ bharatarṣabheṇa.
16. etāni anīkāni mahānubhāvam gūhanti meghāḥ iva gharmaraśmim |
etāni hatvā puruṣapravīra kāṅkṣasva yuddham bharatarṣabheṇa
16. etāni anīkāni meghāḥ iva gharmaraśmim,
mahānubhāvam gūhanti.
puruṣapravīra! etāni hatvā,
bharatarṣabheṇa yuddham kāṅkṣasva.
16. These armies conceal that great-souled warrior (Bhīṣma), just as clouds obscure the sun's rays. O best among men (Arjuna), having defeated these (armies), then seek to engage in battle with the bull of the Bharatas (Bhīṣma).
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
केषां प्रहृष्टास्तत्राग्रे योधा युध्यन्ति संजय ।
उदग्रमनसः केऽत्र के वा दीना विचेतसः ॥१७॥
17. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
keṣāṁ prahṛṣṭāstatrāgre yodhā yudhyanti saṁjaya ,
udagramanasaḥ ke'tra ke vā dīnā vicetasaḥ.
17. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca | keṣām prahṛṣṭāḥ tatra agre yodhāḥ
yudhyanti saṃjaya | udagramanasaḥ ke atra ke vā dīnāḥ vicetasaḥ
17. saṃjaya,
keṣām yodhāḥ tatra agre prahṛṣṭāḥ yudhyanti? atra ke udagramanasaḥ,
vā ke dīnāḥ vicetasaḥ?
17. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "Sañjaya, whose warriors were fighting there at the forefront with joy? Who among them had a spirited mind, and who were disheartened and confused?"
के पूर्वं प्राहरंस्तत्र युद्धे हृदयकम्पने ।
मामकाः पाण्डवानां वा तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥१८॥
18. ke pūrvaṁ prāharaṁstatra yuddhe hṛdayakampane ,
māmakāḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ vā tanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.
18. ke pūrvaṃ prāharan tatra yuddhe hṛdayakampane |
māmakāḥ pāṇḍavānām vā tat mama ācakṣva saṃjaya
18. saṃjaya,
hṛdayakampane yuddhe tatra pūrvaṃ ke prāharan? māmakāḥ vā pāṇḍavānām? tat mama ācakṣva.
18. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "Sañjaya, who struck first in that heart-stirring battle? Was it my sons or the Pāṇḍavas'? Tell me that."
कस्य सेनासमुदये गन्धमाल्यसमुद्भवः ।
वाचः प्रदक्षिणाश्चैव योधानामभिगर्जताम् ॥१९॥
19. kasya senāsamudaye gandhamālyasamudbhavaḥ ,
vācaḥ pradakṣiṇāścaiva yodhānāmabhigarjatām.
19. kasya senāsamudaye gandhamālyasamudbhavaḥ |
vācaḥ pradakṣiṇāḥ ca eva yodhānām abhigarjatām
19. kasya senāsamudaye gandhamālyasamudbhavaḥ? ca eva
abhigarjatām yodhānām pradakṣiṇāḥ vācaḥ (abhavan)?
19. Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: "In whose assembled army was there an abundance of perfumes and garlands? And whose roaring warriors uttered auspicious words?"
संजय उवाच ।
उभयोः सेनयोस्तत्र योधा जहृषिरे मुदा ।
स्रग्धूपपानगन्धानामुभयत्र समुद्भवः ॥२०॥
20. saṁjaya uvāca ,
ubhayoḥ senayostatra yodhā jahṛṣire mudā ,
sragdhūpapānagandhānāmubhayatra samudbhavaḥ.
20. saṃjayaḥ uvāca | ubhayoḥ senayoḥ tatra yodhāḥ jahṛṣire
mudā | sragdhūpapānagandhānām ubhayatra samudbhavaḥ
20. saṃjayaḥ uvāca tatra ubhayoḥ senayoḥ yodhāḥ mudā jahṛṣire ubhayatra srak-dhūpa-pāna-gandhānām samudbhavaḥ (āsīt).
20. Sañjaya said: "In both armies there, the warriors rejoiced with delight. In both camps, there was an abundance of the fragrances of garlands, incense, and drinks."
संहतानामनीकानां व्यूढानां भरतर्षभ ।
संसर्पतामुदीर्णानां विमर्दः सुमहानभूत् ॥२१॥
21. saṁhatānāmanīkānāṁ vyūḍhānāṁ bharatarṣabha ,
saṁsarpatāmudīrṇānāṁ vimardaḥ sumahānabhūt.
21. saṃhatānām anīkānām vyūḍhānām bharatarṣabha
saṃsarpatām udīrṇānām vimardaḥ sumahān abhūt
21. bharatarṣabha saṃhatānām vyūḍhānām saṃsarpatām
udīrṇānām anīkānām sumahān vimardaḥ abhūt
21. O best of Bharatas, there was a very great clash of the assembled, arrayed, advancing, and excited armies.
वादित्रशब्दस्तुमुलः शङ्खभेरीविमिश्रितः ।
कुञ्जराणां च नदतां सैन्यानां च प्रहृष्यताम् ॥२२॥
22. vāditraśabdastumulaḥ śaṅkhabherīvimiśritaḥ ,
kuñjarāṇāṁ ca nadatāṁ sainyānāṁ ca prahṛṣyatām.
22. vāditraśabdaḥ tumulaḥ śaṅkhabherīvimiśritaḥ
kuñjarāṇām ca nadatām sainyānām ca prahṛṣyatām
22. vāditraśabdaḥ śaṅkhabherīvimiśritaḥ kuñjarāṇām

22. There was a tumultuous sound of musical instruments, mixed with the blare of conchs and kettledrums, [coming] from the roaring of elephants and the cheering of the armies.
