वैशंपायन उवाच ।
शृणु मातृगणान्राजन्कुमारानुचरानिमान् ।
कीर्त्यमानान्मया वीर सपत्नगणसूदनान् ॥१॥

याभिर्व्याप्तास्त्रयो लोकाः कल्याणीभिश्चराचराः ॥२॥
2. yaśasvinīnāṁ mātṝṇāṁ śṛṇu nāmāni bhārata ,

2. O Bhārata, listen to the names of these glorious mothers, by whom, these auspicious ones, the three worlds, both moving and unmoving, are pervaded.

श्रीमती बहुला चैव तथैव बहुपुत्रिका ॥३॥

संतानिका च कौरव्य कमला च महाबला ॥९॥

शतघण्टा शतानन्दा भगनन्दा च भामिनी ।
वपुष्मती चन्द्रशीता भद्रकाली च भारत ॥११॥
11. śataghaṇṭā śatānandā bhaganandā ca bhāminī ,
vapuṣmatī candraśītā bhadrakālī ca bhārata.

संकारिका निष्कुटिका भ्रमा चत्वरवासिनी ।
सुमङ्गला स्वस्तिमती वृद्धिकामा जयप्रिया ॥१२॥
12. saṁkārikā niṣkuṭikā bhramā catvaravāsinī ,
sumaṅgalā svastimatī vṛddhikāmā jayapriyā.

धनदा सुप्रसादा च भवदा च जलेश्वरी ।
एडी भेडी समेडी च वेतालजननी तथा ।
कण्डूतिः कालिका चैव देवमित्रा च भारत ॥१३॥
13. dhanadā suprasādā ca bhavadā ca jaleśvarī ,
eḍī bheḍī sameḍī ca vetālajananī tathā ,
kaṇḍūtiḥ kālikā caiva devamitrā ca bhārata.

13. Also, Dhanadā (Bestower of Wealth), Suprasādā (Very Gracious), and Bhavadā (Bestower of Existence), and Jaleśvarī (Mistress of Water); Eḍī, Bheḍī, and Sameḍī, and also Vetālajanani (Mother of Vetālas); and indeed Kaṇḍūti, Kālikā, and Devamitrā (Friend of the Gods), O Bhārata.
लम्बसी केतकी चैव चित्रसेना तथा बला ।
कुक्कुटिका शङ्खनिका तथा जर्जरिका नृप ॥१४॥
14. lambasī ketakī caiva citrasenā tathā balā ,
kukkuṭikā śaṅkhanikā tathā jarjarikā nṛpa.

कुण्डारिका कोकलिका कण्डरा च शतोदरी ।
उत्क्राथिनी जरेणा च महावेगा च कङ्कणा ॥१५॥
15. kuṇḍārikā kokalikā kaṇḍarā ca śatodarī ,
utkrāthinī jareṇā ca mahāvegā ca kaṅkaṇā.

मनोजवा कण्टकिनी प्रघसा पूतना तथा ।
खशया चुर्व्युटिर्वामा क्रोशनाथ तडित्प्रभा ॥१६॥
16. manojavā kaṇṭakinī praghasā pūtanā tathā ,
khaśayā curvyuṭirvāmā krośanātha taḍitprabhā.

सुभगा लम्बिनी लम्बा वसुचूडा विकत्थनी ॥१७॥
17. maṇḍodarī ca tuṇḍā ca koṭarā meghavāsinī ,
subhagā lambinī lambā vasucūḍā vikatthanī.

pṛthuvaktrā madhurikā madhukumbhā tathaiva ca.

ख्याता दहदहा चैव तथा धमधमा नृप ॥१९॥
19. pakṣālikā manthanikā jarāyurjarjarānanā ,
khyātā dahadahā caiva tathā dhamadhamā nṛpa.

खण्डखण्डा च राजेन्द्र पूषणा मणिकुण्डला ।
अमोचा चैव कौरव्य तथा लम्बपयोधरा ॥२०॥
20. khaṇḍakhaṇḍā ca rājendra pūṣaṇā maṇikuṇḍalā ,
amocā caiva kauravya tathā lambapayodharā.

20. O King (rājendra), there is one who is fragmented, and (another named) Pūṣaṇā, adorned with jeweled earrings. O descendant of Kuru (kauravya), likewise, there is (one named) Amocā and (one with) pendulous breasts.
वेणुवीणाधरा चैव पिङ्गाक्षी लोहमेखला ।
शशोलूकमुखी कृष्णा खरजङ्घा महाजवा ॥२१॥
21. veṇuvīṇādharā caiva piṅgākṣī lohamekhalā ,
śaśolūkamukhī kṛṣṇā kharajaṅghā mahājavā.

21. And indeed, (there is one) holding a flute and a lyre, with tawny eyes, and wearing an iron girdle. (There is also one) with the face of a rabbit and an owl, dark-complexioned, with donkey-like shanks, and of great speed.
शिशुमारमुखी श्वेता लोहिताक्षी विभीषणा ।
जटालिका कामचरी दीर्घजिह्वा बलोत्कटा ॥२२॥
22. śiśumāramukhī śvetā lohitākṣī vibhīṣaṇā ,
jaṭālikā kāmacarī dīrghajihvā balotkaṭā.

22. (There is one) with the face of a porpoise, white-complexioned, with red eyes, and terrifying. (There is also one) with matted locks, moving at will, with a long tongue, and exceedingly powerful.
कालेडिका वामनिका मुकुटा चैव भारत ।
लोहिताक्षी महाकाया हरिपिण्डी च भूमिप ॥२३॥
23. kāleḍikā vāmanikā mukuṭā caiva bhārata ,
lohitākṣī mahākāyā haripiṇḍī ca bhūmipa.

23. O descendant of Bharata, indeed, (there is) Kāleḍikā, dwarfish, and Mukuṭā (crowned). O protector of the earth, (there is one) with red eyes, of huge body, and with a lion's body/form.
एकाक्षरा सुकुसुमा कृष्णकर्णी च भारत ।
क्षुरकर्णी चतुष्कर्णी कर्णप्रावरणा तथा ॥२४॥
24. ekākṣarā sukusumā kṛṣṇakarṇī ca bhārata ,
kṣurakarṇī catuṣkarṇī karṇaprāvaraṇā tathā.

kṣurakarṇī catuṣkarṇī karṇaprāvaraṇā tathā

24. O Bhārata, she is one-syllable, adorned with beautiful flowers, black-eared, and similarly, razor-eared, four-eared, and having covered ears.
चतुष्पथनिकेता च गोकर्णी महिषानना ।
खरकर्णी महाकर्णी भेरीस्वनमहास्वना ॥२५॥
25. catuṣpathaniketā ca gokarṇī mahiṣānanā ,
kharakarṇī mahākarṇī bherīsvanamahāsvanā.

25. And residing at crossroads, cow-eared, buffalo-faced, donkey-eared, large-eared, and having a great sound like a war-drum.
शङ्खकुम्भस्वना चैव भङ्गदा च महाबला ।
गणा च सुगणा चैव तथाभीत्यथ कामदा ॥२६॥
26. śaṅkhakumbhasvanā caiva bhaṅgadā ca mahābalā ,
gaṇā ca sugaṇā caiva tathābhītyatha kāmadā.

gaṇā ca sugaṇā ca eva tathābhīti atha kāmadā

26. She has the sound of a conch and a pot, and indeed causes destruction, and is greatly powerful; she belongs to a group, and has a good group, and similarly fearless, and then grants desires.
चतुष्पथरता चैव भूतितीर्थान्यगोचरा ।
पशुदा वित्तदा चैव सुखदा च महायशाः ।
पयोदा गोमहिषदा सुविषाणा च भारत ॥२७॥
27. catuṣpatharatā caiva bhūtitīrthānyagocarā ,
paśudā vittadā caiva sukhadā ca mahāyaśāḥ ,
payodā gomahiṣadā suviṣāṇā ca bhārata.

27. O Bhārata, and indeed delighting in crossroads, whose domain extends to places of well-being (bhūti), holy sites (tīrtha), and other regions, granter of cattle, granter of wealth, and indeed granter of happiness, and greatly famous; she is also granter of milk, granter of cows and buffaloes, and well-horned.
प्रतिष्ठा सुप्रतिष्ठा च रोचमाना सुरोचना ।
गोकर्णी च सुकर्णी च ससिरा स्थेरिका तथा ।
एकचक्रा मेघरवा मेघमाला विरोचना ॥२८॥
28. pratiṣṭhā supratiṣṭhā ca rocamānā surocanā ,
gokarṇī ca sukarṇī ca sasirā stherikā tathā ,
ekacakrā megharavā meghamālā virocanā.

28. Pratiṣṭhā, Supratiṣṭhā, Rocamānā, Surocanā, Gokārṇī, Sukarṇī, Sasirā, Stherikā, Ekacakrā, Megharavā, Meghamālā, and Virocanā (are among them).
एताश्चान्याश्च बहवो मातरो भरतर्षभ ।
कार्त्तिकेयानुयायिन्यो नानारूपाः सहस्रशः ॥२९॥
29. etāścānyāśca bahavo mātaro bharatarṣabha ,
kārttikeyānuyāyinyo nānārūpāḥ sahasraśaḥ.
29. etāḥ ca anyāḥ ca bahavaḥ mātaraḥ bharatarṣabha
kārttikeyānuyāyinyaḥ nānārūpāḥ sahasraśaḥ
29. bharatarṣabha etāḥ ca anyāḥ ca bahavaḥ mātaraḥ

29. O best among the Bharatas, these and many other mothers (mātaraḥ), followers of Kārttikeya, exist in thousands and possess various forms.
दीर्घनख्यो दीर्घदन्त्यो दीर्घतुण्ड्यश्च भारत ।
सरला मधुराश्चैव यौवनस्थाः स्वलंकृताः ॥३०॥
30. dīrghanakhyo dīrghadantyo dīrghatuṇḍyaśca bhārata ,
saralā madhurāścaiva yauvanasthāḥ svalaṁkṛtāḥ.

30. O Bhārata, they are long-clawed, long-toothed, long-snouted, and also simple, charming, youthful, and well-adorned.
माहात्म्येन च संयुक्ताः कामरूपधरास्तथा ।
निर्मांसगात्र्यः श्वेताश्च तथा काञ्चनसंनिभाः ॥३१॥
31. māhātmyena ca saṁyuktāḥ kāmarūpadharāstathā ,
nirmāṁsagātryaḥ śvetāśca tathā kāñcanasaṁnibhāḥ.

31. They are endowed with great majesty, capable of assuming any form at will, and appear with fleshless white bodies, or similarly, gleaming like gold.
कृष्णमेघनिभाश्चान्या धूम्राश्च भरतर्षभ ।
अरुणाभा महाभागा दीर्घकेश्यः सिताम्बराः ॥३२॥
32. kṛṣṇameghanibhāścānyā dhūmrāśca bharatarṣabha ,
aruṇābhā mahābhāgā dīrghakeśyaḥ sitāmbarāḥ.

32. O best among the Bhāratas, there were others resembling dark clouds, and some were smoky-grey. Others had a reddish glow, were greatly fortunate, long-haired, and dressed in white garments.
ऊर्ध्ववेणीधराश्चैव पिङ्गाक्ष्यो लम्बमेखलाः ।
लम्बोदर्यो लम्बकर्णास्तथा लम्बपयोधराः ॥३३॥
33. ūrdhvaveṇīdharāścaiva piṅgākṣyo lambamekhalāḥ ,
lambodaryo lambakarṇāstathā lambapayodharāḥ.

33. And indeed, there were others with braided hair piled upwards, tawny eyes, long or hanging girdles, pendulous bellies, long ears, and also pendulous breasts.
ताम्राक्ष्यस्ताम्रवर्णाश्च हर्यक्ष्यश्च तथापराः ।
वरदाः कामचारिण्यो नित्यप्रमुदितास्तथा ॥३४॥
34. tāmrākṣyastāmravarṇāśca haryakṣyaśca tathāparāḥ ,
varadāḥ kāmacāriṇyo nityapramuditāstathā.

34. Some had coppery eyes and coppery complexions, and others had greenish-yellow eyes. They granted boons, moved about freely, and were always joyous.
याम्यो रौद्र्यस्तथा सौम्याः कौबेर्योऽथ महाबलाः ।
वारुण्योऽथ च माहेन्द्र्यस्तथाग्नेय्यः परंतप ॥३५॥
35. yāmyo raudryastathā saumyāḥ kauberyo'tha mahābalāḥ ,
vāruṇyo'tha ca māhendryastathāgneyyaḥ paraṁtapa.

35. O tormentor of foes, there were also those belonging to Yama, those belonging to Rudra, and those belonging to Soma. Then there were the immensely powerful ones associated with Kubera, and also those of Varuṇa, and Mahendra, and Agni.
वायव्यश्चाथ कौमार्यो ब्राह्म्यश्च भरतर्षभ ।
रूपेणाप्सरसां तुल्या जवे वायुसमास्तथा ॥३६॥
36. vāyavyaścātha kaumāryo brāhmyaśca bharatarṣabha ,
rūpeṇāpsarasāṁ tulyā jave vāyusamāstathā.

36. O best among Bharatas, these (beings) are associated with Vayu, Kumara, and Brahma. In beauty, they are like Apsaras, and similarly, in speed, they are like the wind.
परपुष्टोपमा वाक्ये तथर्द्ध्या धनदोपमाः ।
शक्रवीर्योपमाश्चैव दीप्त्या वह्निसमास्तथा ॥३७॥
37. parapuṣṭopamā vākye tatharddhyā dhanadopamāḥ ,
śakravīryopamāścaiva dīptyā vahnisamāstathā.

37. Moreover, they are sweet-voiced like cuckoos, and in prosperity, they are like Kubera. Indeed, in valor they resemble Indra's might, and in brilliance, they are like fire.
वृक्षचत्वरवासिन्यश्चतुष्पथनिकेतनाः ।
गुहाश्मशानवासिन्यः शैलप्रस्रवणालयाः ॥३८॥
38. vṛkṣacatvaravāsinyaścatuṣpathaniketanāḥ ,
guhāśmaśānavāsinyaḥ śailaprasravaṇālayāḥ.

38. They are residents of trees and courtyards, and their abodes are crossroads. They dwell in caves and cremation grounds, and mountain springs serve as their homes.
नानाभरणधारिण्यो नानामाल्याम्बरास्तथा ।
नानाविचित्रवेषाश्च नानाभाषास्तथैव च ॥३९॥
39. nānābharaṇadhāriṇyo nānāmālyāmbarāstathā ,
nānāvicitraveṣāśca nānābhāṣāstathaiva ca.

39. They wear diverse ornaments and are adorned with various garlands and garments. Moreover, they possess various wonderful attires and also speak many different languages.
एते चान्ये च बहवो गणाः शत्रुभयंकराः ।
अनुजग्मुर्महात्मानं त्रिदशेन्द्रस्य संमते ॥४०॥
40. ete cānye ca bahavo gaṇāḥ śatrubhayaṁkarāḥ ,
anujagmurmahātmānaṁ tridaśendrasya saṁmate.
40. ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ gaṇāḥ śatrubhayaṅkarāḥ
anujagmuḥ mahātmānam tridaśendrasya saṃmate
40. These and many other hosts, terrifying to their enemies, followed the great-souled one with the consent of the lord of the gods (Indra).
ततः शक्त्यस्त्रमददद्भगवान्पाकशासनः ।
गुहाय राजशार्दूल विनाशाय सुरद्विषाम् ॥४१॥
41. tataḥ śaktyastramadadadbhagavānpākaśāsanaḥ ,
guhāya rājaśārdūla vināśāya suradviṣām.

41. Then, O tiger among kings (rājaśārdūla), the divine Indra, the slayer of Pāka, gave the "śakti" weapon to Guha for the destruction of the enemies of the gods.
महास्वनां महाघण्टां द्योतमानां सितप्रभाम् ।
तरुणादित्यवर्णां च पताकां भरतर्षभ ॥४२॥
42. mahāsvanāṁ mahāghaṇṭāṁ dyotamānāṁ sitaprabhām ,
taruṇādityavarṇāṁ ca patākāṁ bharatarṣabha.

42. O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), [he gave him] a flag that possessed a mighty sound, a great bell, was radiant with white brilliance, and had the color of the rising sun.
ददौ पशुपतिस्तस्मै सर्वभूतमहाचमूम् ।
उग्रां नानाप्रहरणां तपोवीर्यबलान्विताम् ॥४३॥
43. dadau paśupatistasmai sarvabhūtamahācamūm ,
ugrāṁ nānāpraharaṇāṁ tapovīryabalānvitām.

43. Pashupati (Śiva) gave to him (Guha) a great army composed of all beings, which was fierce, equipped with various weapons, and endowed with ascetic power (tapas) and strength.
विष्णुर्ददौ वैजयन्तीं मालां बलविवर्धिनीम् ।
उमा ददौ चारजसी वाससी सूर्यसप्रभे ॥४४॥
44. viṣṇurdadau vaijayantīṁ mālāṁ balavivardhinīm ,
umā dadau cārajasī vāsasī sūryasaprabhe.

44. Viṣṇu gave him the Vaijayantī garland, which increases strength. Umā also gave two spotless garments, radiant like the sun.
गङ्गा कमण्डलुं दिव्यममृतोद्भवमुत्तमम् ।
ददौ प्रीत्या कुमाराय दण्डं चैव बृहस्पतिः ॥४५॥
45. gaṅgā kamaṇḍaluṁ divyamamṛtodbhavamuttamam ,
dadau prītyā kumārāya daṇḍaṁ caiva bṛhaspatiḥ.

45. Gaṅgā gave a divine, excellent water-pot (kamaṇḍalu), which arose from nectar. And Bṛhaspati, with affection, gave a staff to the Kumāra.
गरुडो दयितं पुत्रं मयूरं चित्रबर्हिणम् ।
अरुणस्ताम्रचूडं च प्रददौ चरणायुधम् ॥४६॥
46. garuḍo dayitaṁ putraṁ mayūraṁ citrabarhiṇam ,
aruṇastāmracūḍaṁ ca pradadau caraṇāyudham.

46. Garuḍa gave his beloved son, the peacock Citrabarhiṇa (meaning 'having variegated tail feathers'). And Aruṇa gave Tāmracūḍa (the cock, whose 'weapons' are his feet).
पाशं तु वरुणो राजा बलवीर्यसमन्वितम् ।
कृष्णाजिनं तथा ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मण्याय ददौ प्रभुः ।
समरेषु जयं चैव प्रददौ लोकभावनः ॥४७॥
47. pāśaṁ tu varuṇo rājā balavīryasamanvitam ,
kṛṣṇājinaṁ tathā brahmā brahmaṇyāya dadau prabhuḥ ,
samareṣu jayaṁ caiva pradadau lokabhāvanaḥ.
47. pāśam tu varuṇaḥ rājā bala-vīrya-samanvitam
| kṛṣṇa-ajinam tathā brahmā

47. But King Varuṇa gave a noose (pāśa) endowed with strength and valor. Likewise, the lord Brahmā gave a black antelope skin to Brahmanya. And the creator of worlds (lokabhāvanaḥ) also gave victory in battles.
सेनापत्यमनुप्राप्य स्कन्दो देवगणस्य ह ।
शुशुभे ज्वलितोऽर्चिष्मान्द्वितीय इव पावकः ।
ततः पारिषदैश्चैव मातृभिश्च समन्वितः ॥४८॥
48. senāpatyamanuprāpya skando devagaṇasya ha ,
śuśubhe jvalito'rciṣmāndvitīya iva pāvakaḥ ,
tataḥ pāriṣadaiścaiva mātṛbhiśca samanvitaḥ.

48. Having obtained the leadership of the army of the host of gods, Skanda shone, blazing and radiant, like a second fire. Thereafter, he was accompanied by his attendants and also by the mothers.
सा सेना नैरृती भीमा सघण्टोच्छ्रितकेतना ।
सभेरीशङ्खमुरजा सायुधा सपताकिनी ।
शारदी द्यौरिवाभाति ज्योतिर्भिरुपशोभिता ॥४९॥
49. sā senā nairṛtī bhīmā saghaṇṭocchritaketanā ,
sabherīśaṅkhamurajā sāyudhā sapatākinī ,
śāradī dyaurivābhāti jyotirbhirupaśobhitā.

49. That terrible, demonic army, with its upraised banners and bells, with its drums, conches, and tabors, armed with weapons, and with its standards, shone like an autumnal sky adorned with stars.
ततो देवनिकायास्ते भूतसेनागणास्तथा ।
वादयामासुरव्यग्रा भेरीशङ्खांश्च पुष्कलान् ॥५०॥
50. tato devanikāyāste bhūtasenāgaṇāstathā ,
vādayāmāsuravyagrā bherīśaṅkhāṁśca puṣkalān.

vādayām āsuḥ avyagrāḥ bherīśaṅkhān ca puṣkalān

50. Then, those hosts of gods and likewise the groups of spirit armies, without agitation, played their loud drums and conches.
पटहाञ्झर्झरांश्चैव कृकचान्गोविषाणिकान् ।
आडम्बरान्गोमुखांश्च डिण्डिमांश्च महास्वनान् ॥५१॥
51. paṭahāñjharjharāṁścaiva kṛkacāngoviṣāṇikān ,
āḍambarāngomukhāṁśca ḍiṇḍimāṁśca mahāsvanān.

51. They also played loud-sounding kettledrums, jharjharas, kṛkacas, cow-horns, āḍambaras, gomukhas, and ḍiṇḍimas.
तुष्टुवुस्ते कुमारं च सर्वे देवाः सवासवाः ।
जगुश्च देवगन्धर्वा ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः ॥५२॥
52. tuṣṭuvuste kumāraṁ ca sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ ,
jaguśca devagandharvā nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ.
52. tuṣṭuvuḥ te kumāram ca sarve devāḥ sa-vāsavāḥ
jaguḥ ca deva-gandharvāḥ nanṛtuḥ ca apsaras-gaṇāḥ

52. All the gods, along with Indra, praised Kumara (Skanda). The celestial gandharvas sang, and the groups of apsaras danced.
ततः प्रीतो महासेनस्त्रिदशेभ्यो वरं ददौ ।
रिपून्हन्तास्मि समरे ये वो वधचिकीर्षवः ॥५३॥
53. tataḥ prīto mahāsenastridaśebhyo varaṁ dadau ,
ripūnhantāsmi samare ye vo vadhacikīrṣavaḥ.

53. Then, the pleased Mahasena (Skanda) gave a boon to the gods: "I will be the killer of those enemies in battle who desire to kill you."
प्रतिगृह्य वरं देवास्तस्माद्विबुधसत्तमात् ।
प्रीतात्मानो महात्मानो मेनिरे निहतान्रिपून् ॥५४॥
54. pratigṛhya varaṁ devāstasmādvibudhasattamāt ,
prītātmāno mahātmāno menire nihatānripūn.

54. Having received the boon from that best of gods, the great-souled gods, with their minds pleased, considered their enemies already slain.
सर्वेषां भूतसंघानां हर्षान्नादः समुत्थितः ।
अपूरयत लोकांस्त्रीन्वरे दत्ते महात्मना ॥५५॥
55. sarveṣāṁ bhūtasaṁghānāṁ harṣānnādaḥ samutthitaḥ ,
apūrayata lokāṁstrīnvare datte mahātmanā.

55. A cry of joy arose from all groups of living beings. It filled the three worlds when the boon was granted by the great-souled one.
स निर्ययौ महासेनो महत्या सेनया वृतः ।
वधाय युधि दैत्यानां रक्षार्थं च दिवौकसाम् ॥५६॥
56. sa niryayau mahāseno mahatyā senayā vṛtaḥ ,
vadhāya yudhi daityānāṁ rakṣārthaṁ ca divaukasām.

56. Accompanied by a great army, Mahasena departed to slay the asuras in battle and to protect the gods.
व्यवसायो जयो धर्मः सिद्धिर्लक्ष्मीर्धृतिः स्मृतिः ।
महासेनस्य सैन्यानामग्रे जग्मुर्नराधिप ॥५७॥
57. vyavasāyo jayo dharmaḥ siddhirlakṣmīrdhṛtiḥ smṛtiḥ ,
mahāsenasya sainyānāmagre jagmurnarādhipa.

57. O king of men, determination, victory, natural law (dharma), success, fortune, steadfastness, and memory marched at the forefront of Mahasena's armies.
स तया भीमया देवः शूलमुद्गरहस्तया ।
गदामुसलनाराचशक्तितोमरहस्तया ।
दृप्तसिंहनिनादिन्या विनद्य प्रययौ गुहः ॥५८॥
58. sa tayā bhīmayā devaḥ śūlamudgarahastayā ,
gadāmusalanārācaśaktitomarahastayā ,
dṛptasiṁhaninādinyā vinadya prayayau guhaḥ.

gadāmusalanārācaśaktitomarahastayā dṛptasiṃhaninādinyā vinadya prayayau
58. He, the divine Guha, set out, roaring loudly, accompanied by his terrifying power (śakti), which held a spear and hammer, and also a mace, pestle, arrow, spear, and javelin, and resonated with the roar of a proud lion.
तं दृष्ट्वा सर्वदैतेया राक्षसा दानवास्तथा ।
व्यद्रवन्त दिशः सर्वा भयोद्विग्नाः समन्ततः ।
अभ्यद्रवन्त देवास्तान्विविधायुधपाणयः ॥५९॥
59. taṁ dṛṣṭvā sarvadaiteyā rākṣasā dānavāstathā ,
vyadravanta diśaḥ sarvā bhayodvignāḥ samantataḥ ,
abhyadravanta devāstānvividhāyudhapāṇayaḥ.

59. Upon seeing him, all the daityas, rakshasas, and danavas, agitated by fear, scattered in all directions. Meanwhile, the gods, with various weapons in their hands, rushed forward to confront them.
दृष्ट्वा च स ततः क्रुद्धः स्कन्दस्तेजोबलान्वितः ।
शक्त्यस्त्रं भगवान्भीमं पुनः पुनरवासृजत् ।
आदधच्चात्मनस्तेजो हविषेद्ध इवानलः ॥६०॥
60. dṛṣṭvā ca sa tataḥ kruddhaḥ skandastejobalānvitaḥ ,
śaktyastraṁ bhagavānbhīmaṁ punaḥ punaravāsṛjat ,
ādadhaccātmanastejo haviṣeddha ivānalaḥ.

60. Upon seeing that, Skanda, who was endowed with immense energy and strength, became enraged. The divine lord repeatedly discharged his formidable Śakti weapon, drawing upon his own brilliant energy like a fire fueled by clarified butter (havis).
अभ्यस्यमाने शक्त्यस्त्रे स्कन्देनामिततेजसा ।
उल्काज्वाला महाराज पपात वसुधातले ॥६१॥

61. O great king, as the immensely energetic Skanda wielded the Śakti weapon, a fiery meteor fell upon the surface of the earth.
संह्रादयन्तश्च तथा निर्घाताश्चापतन्क्षितौ ।
यथान्तकालसमये सुघोराः स्युस्तथा नृप ॥६२॥
62. saṁhrādayantaśca tathā nirghātāścāpatankṣitau ,
yathāntakālasamaye sughorāḥ syustathā nṛpa.

62. nṛpa,

62. And similarly, O king, terrifying thunderbolts, crashing loudly, fell upon the earth, just as dreadful ones would at the time of the dissolution of the universe (antakālasamaya).
क्षिप्ता ह्येका तथा शक्तिः सुघोरानलसूनुना ।
ततः कोट्यो विनिष्पेतुः शक्तीनां भरतर्षभ ॥६३॥
63. kṣiptā hyekā tathā śaktiḥ sughorānalasūnunā ,
tataḥ koṭyo viniṣpetuḥ śaktīnāṁ bharatarṣabha.

63. Indeed, when one Śakti weapon was thus hurled by the son of the very dreadful fire, O best among the Bhāratas, then tens of millions of similar Śakti weapons shot forth from it.
स शक्त्यस्त्रेण संग्रामे जघान भगवान्प्रभुः ।
दैत्येन्द्रं तारकं नाम महाबलपराक्रमम् ।
वृतं दैत्यायुतैर्वीरैर्बलिभिर्दशभिर्नृप ॥६४॥
64. sa śaktyastreṇa saṁgrāme jaghāna bhagavānprabhuḥ ,
daityendraṁ tārakaṁ nāma mahābalaparākramam ,
vṛtaṁ daityāyutairvīrairbalibhirdaśabhirnṛpa.

64. O king, the divine lord (bhagavān), in battle, struck down the demon king named Tāraka, who possessed immense strength and valor, and was surrounded by ten thousand valiant and powerful demons.
महिषं चाष्टभिः पद्मैर्वृतं संख्ये निजघ्निवान् ।
त्रिपादं चायुतशतैर्जघान दशभिर्वृतम् ॥६५॥
65. mahiṣaṁ cāṣṭabhiḥ padmairvṛtaṁ saṁkhye nijaghnivān ,
tripādaṁ cāyutaśatairjaghāna daśabhirvṛtam.

65. And in battle, he struck down Mahiṣa, who was surrounded by eight *padmas* (a huge numerical unit). He also struck down Tripāda, who was encompassed by ten *ayutaśatas* (hundreds of ten thousands).
ह्रदोदरं निखर्वैश्च वृतं दशभिरीश्वरः ।
जघानानुचरैः सार्धं विविधायुधपाणिभिः ॥६६॥
66. hradodaraṁ nikharvaiśca vṛtaṁ daśabhirīśvaraḥ ,

66. The Lord (īśvara), along with his attendants who held various weapons in their hands, struck down Hradodara, who was surrounded by ten *nikharvas* (a very large numerical unit).
तत्राकुर्वन्त विपुलं नादं वध्यत्सु शत्रुषु ।
कुमारानुचरा राजन्पूरयन्तो दिशो दश ॥६७॥
67. tatrākurvanta vipulaṁ nādaṁ vadhyatsu śatruṣu ,
kumārānucarā rājanpūrayanto diśo daśa.

67. There, O king, as the enemies were being slain, Kumāra's attendants made a mighty roar, filling all ten directions.
शक्त्यस्त्रस्य तु राजेन्द्र ततोऽर्चिर्भिः समन्ततः ।
दग्धाः सहस्रशो दैत्या नादैः स्कन्दस्य चापरे ॥६८॥
68. śaktyastrasya tu rājendra tato'rcirbhiḥ samantataḥ ,
dagdhāḥ sahasraśo daityā nādaiḥ skandasya cāpare.

68. O king of kings, then, all around, thousands of demons were incinerated by the flames of the power weapon (śakti). And others [were destroyed] by Skanda's roars.
पताकयावधूताश्च हताः केचित्सुरद्विषः ।
केचिद्घण्टारवत्रस्ता निपेतुर्वसुधातले ।
केचित्प्रहरणैश्छिन्ना विनिपेतुर्गतासवः ॥६९॥
69. patākayāvadhūtāśca hatāḥ kecitsuradviṣaḥ ,
kecidghaṇṭāravatrastā nipeturvasudhātale ,
kecitpraharaṇaiśchinnā vinipeturgatāsavaḥ.

69. And some of the enemies of the gods were agitated and slain by the banner. Some, terrified by the sound of the bell, fell to the ground. Others, severed by weapons, collapsed lifeless.
एवं सुरद्विषोऽनेकान्बलवानाततायिनः ।
जघान समरे वीरः कार्त्तिकेयो महाबलः ॥७०॥
70. evaṁ suradviṣo'nekānbalavānātatāyinaḥ ,
jaghāna samare vīraḥ kārttikeyo mahābalaḥ.

70. Thus, the mighty and greatly powerful hero, Kārttikeya, slew many aggressive enemies of the gods in battle.
बाणो नामाथ दैतेयो बलेः पुत्रो महाबलः ।
क्रौञ्चं पर्वतमासाद्य देवसंघानबाधत ॥७१॥
71. bāṇo nāmātha daiteyo baleḥ putro mahābalaḥ ,
krauñcaṁ parvatamāsādya devasaṁghānabādhata.

71. Then, a mighty demon named Bāṇa, the son of Bali, having approached the Krauñca mountain, began to harass the hosts of gods.
तमभ्ययान्महासेनः सुरशत्रुमुदारधीः ।
स कार्त्तिकेयस्य भयात्क्रौञ्चं शरणमेयिवान् ॥७२॥
72. tamabhyayānmahāsenaḥ suraśatrumudāradhīḥ ,
sa kārttikeyasya bhayātkrauñcaṁ śaraṇameyivān.

72. The noble-minded Mahasena (Karttikeya) approached that enemy of the gods. Fearing Karttikeya, the enemy had sought refuge in the Krauñca mountain.
ततः क्रौञ्चं महामन्युः क्रौञ्चनादनिनादितम् ।
शक्त्या बिभेद भगवान्कार्त्तिकेयोऽग्निदत्तया ॥७३॥
73. tataḥ krauñcaṁ mahāmanyuḥ krauñcanādanināditam ,
śaktyā bibheda bhagavānkārttikeyo'gnidattayā.

73. Then, the divine, mighty-wrathful Karttikeya pierced the Krauñca mountain, which resounded with echoing cries, using the spear (śakti) gifted by Agni.
सशालस्कन्धसरलं त्रस्तवानरवारणम् ।
पुलिनत्रस्तविहगं विनिष्पतितपन्नगम् ॥७४॥
74. saśālaskandhasaralaṁ trastavānaravāraṇam ,
pulinatrastavihagaṁ viniṣpatitapannagam.

74. It (the mountain) possessed its śāla trees and sarala trees with their trunks; its monkeys and elephants were terrified; its birds on the sandbanks were frightened; and its serpents tumbled out.
गोलाङ्गूलर्क्षसंघैश्च द्रवद्भिरनुनादितम् ।
कुरङ्गगतिनिर्घोषमुद्भ्रान्तसृमराचितम् ॥७५॥
75. golāṅgūlarkṣasaṁghaiśca dravadbhiranunāditam ,
kuraṅgagatinirghoṣamudbhrāntasṛmarācitam.

75. And it (the mountain) was reverberating with the sounds of fleeing troops of langurs and bears; it resonated with the loud noise of scattering deer; and it was filled with bewildered sṛmara antelopes.
विनिष्पतद्भिः शरभैः सिंहैश्च सहसा द्रुतैः ।
शोच्यामपि दशां प्राप्तो रराजैव स पर्वतः ॥७६॥
76. viniṣpatadbhiḥ śarabhaiḥ siṁhaiśca sahasā drutaiḥ ,
śocyāmapi daśāṁ prāpto rarājaiva sa parvataḥ.

76. That mountain, even though it had reached a pitiable state due to lions and sharabhas (mythical beasts) swiftly rushing and flying out from it, still shone brightly.
विद्याधराः समुत्पेतुस्तस्य शृङ्गनिवासिनः ।
किंनराश्च समुद्विग्नाः शक्तिपातरवोद्धताः ॥७७॥
77. vidyādharāḥ samutpetustasya śṛṅganivāsinaḥ ,
kiṁnarāśca samudvignāḥ śaktipātaravoddhatāḥ.

77. The Vidyadharas (celestial beings), who dwelt on its peaks, flew up. And the Kinnaras (mythical beings), greatly agitated and roused by the sound of the śakti-weapon's impact, also flew up.
ततो दैत्या विनिष्पेतुः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
प्रदीप्तात्पर्वतश्रेष्ठाद्विचित्राभरणस्रजः ॥७८॥
78. tato daityā viniṣpetuḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ,
pradīptātparvataśreṣṭhādvicitrābharaṇasrajaḥ.

78. Then, by hundreds and thousands, the Daityas (demons), adorned with various ornaments and garlands, rushed out from that blazing, foremost of mountains.
तान्निजघ्नुरतिक्रम्य कुमारानुचरा मृधे ।
बिभेद शक्त्या क्रौञ्चं च पावकिः परवीरहा ॥७९॥
79. tānnijaghnuratikramya kumārānucarā mṛdhe ,
bibheda śaktyā krauñcaṁ ca pāvakiḥ paravīrahā.

bibheda śaktyā krauñcam ca pāvakiḥ paravīrahā

79. In battle, Kumara's (Kartikeya's) followers, having overwhelmed them, struck them down. And Pāvaki (Kartikeya), the slayer of enemy heroes, pierced Mount Krauñca with his śakti-weapon.
बहुधा चैकधा चैव कृत्वात्मानं महात्मना ।
शक्तिः क्षिप्ता रणे तस्य पाणिमेति पुनः पुनः ॥८०॥
80. bahudhā caikadhā caiva kṛtvātmānaṁ mahātmanā ,
śaktiḥ kṣiptā raṇe tasya pāṇimeti punaḥ punaḥ.
80. bahudhā ca ekadhā ca eva kṛtvā ātmānam mahātmanā
śaktiḥ kṣiptā raṇe tasya pāṇim eti punaḥ punaḥ
80. mahātmanā ātmānam bahudhā ca ekadhā ca eva kṛtvā,
raṇe kṣiptā tasya śaktiḥ punaḥ punaḥ pāṇim eti.
80. The great-souled one (mahātman) transformed himself, manifesting in many forms and also as a single entity. His divine power (śakti), when hurled in battle, would return to his hand again and again.
एवंप्रभावो भगवानतो भूयश्च पावकिः ।
क्रौञ्चस्तेन विनिर्भिन्नो दैत्याश्च शतशो हताः ॥८१॥
81. evaṁprabhāvo bhagavānato bhūyaśca pāvakiḥ ,
krauñcastena vinirbhinno daityāśca śataśo hatāḥ.
81. evamprabhāvaḥ bhagavān ataḥ bhūyaḥ ca pāvakiḥ
krauñcaḥ tena vinirbhinnaḥ daityāḥ ca śataśaḥ hatāḥ

tena krauñcaḥ vinirbhinnaḥ ca śataśaḥ daityāḥ hatāḥ.
81. Such was the power of the glorious (bhagavān) son of fire (Pāvaki). By him, the Krauñca mountain-demon was pierced, and hundreds of demons (daitya) were slain.
ततः स भगवान्देवो निहत्य विबुधद्विषः ।
सभाज्यमानो विबुधैः परं हर्षमवाप ह ॥८२॥
82. tataḥ sa bhagavāndevo nihatya vibudhadviṣaḥ ,
sabhājyamāno vibudhaiḥ paraṁ harṣamavāpa ha.

82. Thereupon, that glorious (bhagavān) god, having slain the enemies of the gods, and being greatly honored by the divine beings (vibudha), attained supreme joy.
ततो दुन्दुभयो राजन्नेदुः शङ्खाश्च भारत ।
मुमुचुर्देवयोषाश्च पुष्पवर्षमनुत्तमम् ॥८३॥
83. tato dundubhayo rājanneduḥ śaṅkhāśca bhārata ,
mumucurdevayoṣāśca puṣpavarṣamanuttamam.
83. tataḥ dundubhayaḥ rājan neduḥ śaṅkhāḥ ca bhārata
mumucuḥ devayoṣāḥ ca puṣpavarṣam anuttamam
83. rājan bhārata! tataḥ dundubhayaḥ ca śaṅkhāḥ neduḥ.

83. Then, O King (rājan), O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), the war-drums sounded and conch-shells blared. And the celestial women (devayoṣā) showered an unsurpassed rain of flowers.
दिव्यगन्धमुपादाय ववौ पुण्यश्च मारुतः ।
गन्धर्वास्तुष्टुवुश्चैनं यज्वानश्च महर्षयः ॥८४॥
84. divyagandhamupādāya vavau puṇyaśca mārutaḥ ,
gandharvāstuṣṭuvuścainaṁ yajvānaśca maharṣayaḥ.

84. The holy wind blew, carrying a divine fragrance. The Gandharvas, along with the performers of Vedic rituals (yajvan) and the great sages, praised him.
केचिदेनं व्यवस्यन्ति पितामहसुतं प्रभुम् ।
सनत्कुमारं सर्वेषां ब्रह्मयोनिं तमग्रजम् ॥८५॥
85. kecidenaṁ vyavasyanti pitāmahasutaṁ prabhum ,
sanatkumāraṁ sarveṣāṁ brahmayoniṁ tamagrajam.

85. Some consider him to be Sanatkumāra, the Lord, the grandson of Brahmā, the primeval one (agrajam) and the source of all (brahman).
केचिन्महेश्वरसुतं केचित्पुत्रं विभावसोः ।
उमायाः कृत्तिकानां च गङ्गायाश्च वदन्त्युत ॥८६॥
86. kecinmaheśvarasutaṁ kecitputraṁ vibhāvasoḥ ,
umāyāḥ kṛttikānāṁ ca gaṅgāyāśca vadantyuta.
86. kecit maheśvara-sutam kecit putram vibhāvasoḥ
umāyāḥ kṛttikānām ca gaṅgāyāḥ ca vadanti uta
86. kecit maheśvara-sutam vadanti kecit ca vibhāvasoḥ putram,
umāyāḥ ca,
kṛttikānām ca,
gaṅgāyāḥ ca uta (vadanti)
86. Some declare him to be the son of Maheśvara (Shiva); others, moreover, declare him to be the son of Vibhāvasu (the Sun god), of Umā, of the Kṛttikās, and of Gaṅgā.
एकधा च द्विधा चैव चतुर्धा च महाबलम् ।
योगिनामीश्वरं देवं शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥८७॥
87. ekadhā ca dvidhā caiva caturdhā ca mahābalam ,
yogināmīśvaraṁ devaṁ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
87. ekadhā ca dvidhā ca eva caturdhā ca mahā-balam
yoginām īśvaram devam śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
87. (te) mahā-balam yoginām īśvaram devam ekadhā ca dvidhā
ca eva caturdhā ca śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ (varṇayanti)
87. And they describe the mighty god, the lord of (yogins), in one way, in two ways, and indeed in four ways, by hundreds and by thousands.
एतत्ते कथितं राजन्कार्त्तिकेयाभिषेचनम् ।
शृणु चैव सरस्वत्यास्तीर्थवंशस्य पुण्यताम् ॥८८॥
88. etatte kathitaṁ rājankārttikeyābhiṣecanam ,
śṛṇu caiva sarasvatyāstīrthavaṁśasya puṇyatām.
88. etat te kathitam rājan kārttikeyābhiṣecanam |
śṛṇu ca eva sarasvatyāḥ tīrthavaṃśasya puṇyatām
88. rājan te etat kārttikeyābhiṣecanam kathitam ca
eva sarasvatyāḥ tīrthavaṃśasya puṇyatām śṛṇu
88. O King, I have recounted to you the anointing of Kārttikeya. Now, listen also to the holiness of the lineage of sacred sites (tīrtha) associated with Sarasvatī.
बभूव तीर्थप्रवरं हतेषु सुरशत्रुषु ।
कुमारेण महाराज त्रिविष्टपमिवापरम् ॥८९॥
89. babhūva tīrthapravaraṁ hateṣu suraśatruṣu ,
kumāreṇa mahārāja triviṣṭapamivāparam.

89. O Great King, after Kumāra (Kārttikeya) had slain the enemies of the gods, that sacred site (tīrtha) became exceptionally prominent, like a second heaven.
ऐश्वर्याणि च तत्रस्थो ददावीशः पृथक्पृथक् ।
तदा नैरृतमुख्येभ्यस्त्रैलोक्ये पावकात्मजः ॥९०॥
90. aiśvaryāṇi ca tatrastho dadāvīśaḥ pṛthakpṛthak ,
tadā nairṛtamukhyebhyastrailokye pāvakātmajaḥ.
90. aiśvaryāṇi ca tatrasthaḥ dadau īśaḥ pṛthak pṛthak
| tadā nairṛtamukhyebhyaḥ trailokye pāvakātmajaḥ
90. ca tatrasthaḥ īśaḥ pāvakātmajaḥ tadā trailokye
nairṛtamukhyebhyaḥ pṛthak pṛthak aiśvaryāṇi dadau
90. Being present at that sacred site (tīrtha), the lord, Kārttikeya (pāvakātmaja), then bestowed various sovereignties (aiśvarya) individually upon the chiefs of the Nairṛtas (a class of Rākṣasas) throughout the three worlds.
एवं स भगवांस्तस्मिंस्तीर्थे दैत्यकुलान्तकः ।
अभिषिक्तो महाराज देवसेनापतिः सुरैः ॥९१॥
91. evaṁ sa bhagavāṁstasmiṁstīrthe daityakulāntakaḥ ,
abhiṣikto mahārāja devasenāpatiḥ suraiḥ.
91. evam saḥ bhagavān tasmin tīrthe daityakulāntakaḥ
| abhiṣiktaḥ mahārāja devasenāpatiḥ suraiḥ
91. mahārāja evam saḥ bhagavān daityakulāntakaḥ
devasenāpatiḥ tasmin tīrthe suraiḥ abhiṣiktaḥ
91. O Great King, thus that divine (bhagavān) Kārttikeya, the destroyer of the demon lineage (daityakulāntaka) and commander of the gods' army (devasenāpati), was consecrated by the gods at that sacred site (tīrtha).
औजसं नाम तत्तीर्थं यत्र पूर्वमपां पतिः ।
अभिषिक्तः सुरगणैर्वरुणो भरतर्षभ ॥९२॥
92. aujasaṁ nāma tattīrthaṁ yatra pūrvamapāṁ patiḥ ,
abhiṣiktaḥ suragaṇairvaruṇo bharatarṣabha.
92. aujasaṃ nāma tat tīrthaṃ yatra pūrvam apāṃ patiḥ
abhiṣiktaḥ suragaṇaiḥ varuṇaḥ bharatarṣabha
92. bharatarṣabha yatra pūrvam apāṃ patiḥ varuṇaḥ
suragaṇaiḥ abhiṣiktaḥ tat aujasaṃ nāma tīrtham
92. O best among Bharatas, that holy place is named Aujasa, where Varuṇa, the lord of waters, was formerly consecrated by the hosts of gods.
तस्मिंस्तीर्थवरे स्नात्वा स्कन्दं चाभ्यर्च्य लाङ्गली ।
ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददौ रुक्मं वासांस्याभरणानि च ॥९३॥
93. tasmiṁstīrthavare snātvā skandaṁ cābhyarcya lāṅgalī ,
brāhmaṇebhyo dadau rukmaṁ vāsāṁsyābharaṇāni ca.
93. tasmin tīrthavare snātvā skandaṃ ca abhyarcya lāṅgalī
brāhmaṇebhyaḥ dadau rukmaṃ vāsāṃsi ābharaṇāni ca
93. lāṅgalī tasmin tīrthavare snātvā skandaṃ ca abhyarcya
brāhmaṇebhyaḥ rukmaṃ vāsāṃsi ca ābharaṇāni dadau
93. Having bathed in that excellent holy place and worshipped Skanda, Balarāma (lāṅgalī) gave gold, garments, and ornaments to the Brahmins.
उषित्वा रजनीं तत्र माधवः परवीरहा ।
पूज्य तीर्थवरं तच्च स्पृष्ट्वा तोयं च लाङ्गली ।
हृष्टः प्रीतमनाश्चैव ह्यभवन्माधवोत्तमः ॥९४॥
94. uṣitvā rajanīṁ tatra mādhavaḥ paravīrahā ,
pūjya tīrthavaraṁ tacca spṛṣṭvā toyaṁ ca lāṅgalī ,
hṛṣṭaḥ prītamanāścaiva hyabhavanmādhavottamaḥ.
94. uṣitvā rajanīṃ tatra mādhavaḥ paravīrahā
pūjya tīrthavaraṃ ca tat spṛṣṭvā
toyam ca lāṅgalī hṛṣṭaḥ prītamanāḥ

pūjya toyam ca spṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭaḥ prītamanāḥ
ca eva hi mādhavottamaḥ abhavat
94. Having stayed there for the night, Balarāma (mādhava, paravīrahā), after venerating that excellent holy place and touching its waters, became joyful and pleased in mind; indeed, he was truly an excellent Mādhava (mādhavottama).
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ।
यथाभिषिक्तो भगवान्स्कन्दो देवैः समागतैः ॥९५॥
95. etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ yanmāṁ tvaṁ paripṛcchasi ,
yathābhiṣikto bhagavānskando devaiḥ samāgataiḥ.
95. etat te sarvam ākhyātam yat māṃ tvam paripṛcchasi
yathā abhiṣiktaḥ bhagavān skandaḥ devaiḥ samāgataiḥ
95. etat sarvam te ākhyātam yat tvam māṃ paripṛcchasi
yathā bhagavān skandaḥ samāgataiḥ devaiḥ abhiṣiktaḥ
95. All this, about which you asked me, has now been recounted to you, specifically how the revered Skanda (skanda) was consecrated by the assembled gods.
