संजय उवाच ।
शरतल्पे महात्मानं शयानममितौजसम् ।
महावातसमूहेन समुद्रमिव शोषितम् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
śaratalpe mahātmānaṁ śayānamamitaujasam ,
mahāvātasamūhena samudramiva śoṣitam.

1. Sañjaya said: "(I saw) the great-souled one (mahātmā), lying on a bed of arrows, of immeasurable energy, like an ocean dried up by a mighty gust of wind."
दिव्यैरस्त्रैर्महेष्वासं पातितं सव्यसाचिना ।
जयाशां तव पुत्राणां संभग्नां शर्म वर्म च ॥२॥
2. divyairastrairmaheṣvāsaṁ pātitaṁ savyasācinā ,
jayāśāṁ tava putrāṇāṁ saṁbhagnāṁ śarma varma ca.
2. divyaiḥ astraiḥ maheṣvāsam pātitaṃ savyasācinā

2. Struck down by Savyasācin (Arjuna) with divine weapons, that great archer (Bhishma) was felled. The hope of victory for your sons was completely shattered, along with their comfort and protection.
अपाराणामिव द्वीपमगाधे गाधमिच्छताम् ।
स्रोतसा यामुनेनेव शरौघेण परिप्लुतम् ॥३॥
3. apārāṇāmiva dvīpamagādhe gādhamicchatām ,
srotasā yāmuneneva śaraugheṇa pariplutam.
3. apārāṇām iva dvīpam agādhe gādham icchhatām
srotasā yāmunena iva śaraugheṇa pariplutam
3. agādhe apārāṇām gādham icchhatām iva dvīpam

3. He was like an island for those desiring firm ground in an unfathomable, boundless ocean, overwhelmed by a flood of arrows, just as one is submerged by the current of the Yamuna.
महान्तमिव मैनाकमसह्यं भुवि पातितम् ।
नभश्च्युतमिवादित्यं पतितं धरणीतले ॥४॥
4. mahāntamiva mainākamasahyaṁ bhuvi pātitam ,
nabhaścyutamivādityaṁ patitaṁ dharaṇītale.
4. mahāntam iva mainākam asahyam bhuvi pātitaṃ
nabhaḥ cyutam iva ādityam patitaṃ dharaṇītale
4. bhuvi asahyam mahāntam mainākam iva pātitaṃ

4. Felled to the earth, like the great, irresistible Maināka mountain. Fallen to the ground, like the sun having dropped from the sky.
शतक्रतोरिवाचिन्त्यं पुरा वृत्रेण निर्जयम् ।
मोहनं सर्वसैन्यस्य युधि भीष्मस्य पातनम् ॥५॥
5. śatakratorivācintyaṁ purā vṛtreṇa nirjayam ,
mohanaṁ sarvasainyasya yudhi bhīṣmasya pātanam.
5. śatakratoḥ iva acintyam purā vṛtreṇa nirjayam
mohanam sarvasainyasya yudhi bhīṣmasya pātanam
5. yudhi bhīṣmasya pātanam purā vṛtreṇa śatakratoḥ

5. The felling of Bhishma in battle was as inconceivable as the former defeat of Indra (śatakratu) by Vṛtra, causing bewilderment to the entire army.
ककुदं सर्वसैन्यानां लक्ष्म सर्वधनुष्मताम् ।
धनंजयशरव्याप्तं पितरं ते महाव्रतम् ॥६॥
6. kakudaṁ sarvasainyānāṁ lakṣma sarvadhanuṣmatām ,
dhanaṁjayaśaravyāptaṁ pitaraṁ te mahāvratam.
6. kakudam sarvasainyānām lakṣma sarvadhanuṣmatām
dhanaṃjayaśaravyāptam pitaram te mahāvratam
6. te pitaram sarvasainyānām kakudam sarvadhanuṣmatām
lakṣma dhanaṃjayaśaravyāptam mahāvratam
6. Your father, who is the chief of all armies, the embodiment of all archers, covered by Arjuna's arrows, and of great vow.
तं वीरशयने वीरं शयानं पुरुषर्षभम् ।
भीष्ममाधिरथिर्दृष्ट्वा भरतानाममध्यमम् ॥७॥
7. taṁ vīraśayane vīraṁ śayānaṁ puruṣarṣabham ,
bhīṣmamādhirathirdṛṣṭvā bharatānāmamadhyamam.
7. tam vīraśayane vīram śayānam puruṣarṣabham
bhīṣmam ādhirathiḥ dṛṣṭvā bharatānām amadhyamam
7. ādhirathiḥ vīraśayane śayānam tam vīram
puruṣarṣabham bharatānām amadhyamam bhīṣmam dṛṣṭvā
7. Having seen that hero Bhishma, the best among men (puruṣarṣabha), the unsurpassed among the Bharatas, lying on the hero's bed (bed of arrows), Adhirathi's son (Karṇa)...
अवतीर्य रथादार्तो बाष्पव्याकुलिताक्षरम् ।
अभिवाद्याञ्जलिं बद्ध्वा वन्दमानोऽभ्यभाषत ॥८॥
8. avatīrya rathādārto bāṣpavyākulitākṣaram ,
abhivādyāñjaliṁ baddhvā vandamāno'bhyabhāṣata.
8. avatīrya rathāt ārtaḥ bāṣpavyākulitākṣaram
abhivādya añjalim baddhvā vandamānaḥ abhyabhāṣata
8. ārtaḥ rathāt avatīrya abhivādya añjalim baddhvā
bāṣpavyākulitākṣaram vandamānaḥ abhyabhāṣata
8. Distressed, he descended from his chariot, and having bowed down and joined his palms in reverence (añjali), he spoke, his words choked by tears, as he revered him.
कर्णोऽहमस्मि भद्रं ते अद्य मा वद भारत ।
पुण्यया क्षेमया वाचा चक्षुषा चावलोकय ॥९॥
9. karṇo'hamasmi bhadraṁ te adya mā vada bhārata ,
puṇyayā kṣemayā vācā cakṣuṣā cāvalokaya.
9. karṇaḥ aham asmi bhadram te adya mā vada bhārata
puṇyayā kṣemayā vācā cakṣuṣā ca avalokaya
9. aham karṇaḥ asmi te bhadram adya bhārata puṇyayā
kṣemayā vācā ca cakṣuṣā mā vada avalokaya ca
9. I am Karṇa. May all be well with you. O Bhārata, speak to me today with your sacred and auspicious words, and look upon me with your eyes.
न नूनं सुकृतस्येह फलं कश्चित्समश्नुते ।
यत्र धर्मपरो वृद्धः शेते भुवि भवानिह ॥१०॥
10. na nūnaṁ sukṛtasyeha phalaṁ kaścitsamaśnute ,
yatra dharmaparo vṛddhaḥ śete bhuvi bhavāniha.
10. na nūnam sukṛtasya iha phalam kaścit samaśnute
yatra dharmaparaḥ vṛddhaḥ śete bhuvi bhavān iha
10. iha kaścit sukṛtasya phalam nūnam na samaśnute
yatra dharmaparaḥ vṛddhaḥ bhavān iha bhuvi śete
10. Indeed, no one here truly experiences the reward of their good deeds, when you, devoted to righteousness (dharma) and aged, lie on the ground here.
कोशसंजनने मन्त्रे व्यूहप्रहरणेषु च ।
नाथमन्यं न पश्यामि कुरूणां कुरुसत्तम ॥११॥
11. kośasaṁjanane mantre vyūhapraharaṇeṣu ca ,
nāthamanyaṁ na paśyāmi kurūṇāṁ kurusattama.
11. kośasaṃjanane mantre vyūhapraharaṇeṣu ca
nātham anyam na paśyāmi kurūṇām kurusattama
11. kurusattama kośasaṃjanane mantre ca
vyūhapraharaṇeṣu kurūṇām anyam nātham na paśyāmi
11. O best among the Kurus, I see no other protector for the Kurus regarding the generation of resources, in strategic counsel (mantra), or in battle formations and weaponry.
बुद्ध्या विशुद्धया युक्तो यः कुरूंस्तारयेद्भयात् ।
योधांस्त्वमप्लवे हित्वा पितृलोकं गमिष्यसि ॥१२॥
12. buddhyā viśuddhayā yukto yaḥ kurūṁstārayedbhayāt ,
yodhāṁstvamaplave hitvā pitṛlokaṁ gamiṣyasi.
12. buddhyā viśuddhayā yuktaḥ yaḥ kurūn tārayet bhayāt
yodhān tvam aplave hitvā pitṛlokam gamiṣyasi
12. yaḥ viśuddhayā buddhyā yuktaḥ bhayāt kurūn tārayet
tvam aplave yodhān hitvā pitṛlokam gamiṣyasi
12. The one who, endowed with a pure intellect, would rescue the Kurus from fear – you, abandoning these warriors as if they were without support, will proceed to the realm of ancestors.
अद्य प्रभृति संक्रुद्धा व्याघ्रा इव मृगक्षयम् ।
पाण्डवा भरतश्रेष्ठ करिष्यन्ति कुरुक्षयम् ॥१३॥
13. adya prabhṛti saṁkruddhā vyāghrā iva mṛgakṣayam ,
pāṇḍavā bharataśreṣṭha kariṣyanti kurukṣayam.
13. adya prabhṛti saṃkruddhāḥ vyāghrāḥ iva mṛgakṣayam
pāṇḍavāḥ bharataśreṣṭha kariṣyanti kurukṣayam
13. bharataśreṣṭha adya prabhṛti saṃkruddhāḥ mṛgakṣayam
vyāghrāḥ iva pāṇḍavāḥ kurukṣayam kariṣyanti
13. From this day forward, O best of Bharatas, the Pandavas, enraged like tigers intent on destroying deer, will bring about the annihilation of the Kurus.
अद्य गाण्डीवघोषस्य वीर्यज्ञाः सव्यसाचिनः ।
कुरवः संत्रसिष्यन्ति वज्रपाणेरिवासुराः ॥१४॥
14. adya gāṇḍīvaghoṣasya vīryajñāḥ savyasācinaḥ ,
kuravaḥ saṁtrasiṣyanti vajrapāṇerivāsurāḥ.
14. adya gāṇḍīvaghoṣasya vīryajñāḥ savyasācinaḥ
kuravaḥ saṃtrasiṣyanti vajrapāṇeḥ iva asurāḥ
14. adya savyasācinaḥ gāṇḍīvaghoṣasya vīryajñāḥ
kuravaḥ vajrapāṇeḥ asurāḥ iva saṃtrasiṣyanti
14. Today, the Kurus, recognizing the prowess of Arjuna (savyasācin) and the sound of his Gāṇḍīva bow, will be terrified, just as the Asuras are by Indra (vajrapāṇi).
अद्य गाण्डीवमुक्तानामशनीनामिव स्वनः ।
त्रासयिष्यति संग्रामे कुरूनन्यांश्च पार्थिवान् ॥१५॥
15. adya gāṇḍīvamuktānāmaśanīnāmiva svanaḥ ,
trāsayiṣyati saṁgrāme kurūnanyāṁśca pārthivān.
15. adya gāṇḍīvamuktānām aśanīnām iva svanaḥ
trāsayiṣyati saṃgrāme kurūn anyān ca pārthivān
15. adya gāṇḍīvamuktānām aśanīnām iva svanaḥ
saṃgrāme kurūn anyān pārthivān ca trāsayiṣyati
15. Today, the roar, like that of thunderbolts unleashed from the Gāṇḍīva bow, will terrify the Kurus and other kings in battle.
समिद्धोऽग्निर्यथा वीर महाज्वालो द्रुमान्दहेत् ।
धार्तराष्ट्रान्प्रधक्ष्यन्ति तथा बाणाः किरीटिनः ॥१६॥
16. samiddho'gniryathā vīra mahājvālo drumāndahet ,
dhārtarāṣṭrānpradhakṣyanti tathā bāṇāḥ kirīṭinaḥ.
16. samiddhaḥ agniḥ yathā vīra mahājvālaḥ drumān dahet
dhārtarāṣṭrān pradhakṣyanti tathā bāṇāḥ kirīṭinaḥ
16. vīra yathā mahājvālaḥ samiddhaḥ agniḥ drumān dahet
tathā kirīṭinaḥ bāṇāḥ dhārtarāṣṭrān pradhakṣyanti
16. O hero, just as an ignited fire (agni) with mighty flames consumes trees, so too will the arrows of the crowned one (Arjuna) utterly destroy the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
येन येन प्रसरतो वाय्वग्नी सहितौ वने ।
तेन तेन प्रदहतो भगवन्तौ यदिच्छतः ॥१७॥
17. yena yena prasarato vāyvagnī sahitau vane ,
tena tena pradahato bhagavantau yadicchataḥ.
17. yena yena prasarataḥ vāyvagnī sahitau vane
tena tena pradahataḥ bhagavantau yat icchataḥ
17. yena yena vāyvagnī sahitau vane prasarataḥ
tena tena bhagavantau yat icchataḥ pradahataḥ
17. Wherever wind and fire (vāyvagnī) spread together through the forest, by that very path do those two mighty lords, as they desire, consume everything.
यादृशोऽग्निः समिद्धो हि तादृक्पार्थो न संशयः ।
यथा वायुर्नरव्याघ्र तथा कृष्णो न संशयः ॥१८॥
18. yādṛśo'gniḥ samiddho hi tādṛkpārtho na saṁśayaḥ ,
yathā vāyurnaravyāghra tathā kṛṣṇo na saṁśayaḥ.
18. yādṛśaḥ agniḥ samiddhaḥ hi tādṛk pārthaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
yathā vāyuḥ naravyāghra tathā kṛṣṇaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
18. pārthaḥ hi yādṛśaḥ agniḥ samiddhaḥ tādr̥k na saṃśayaḥ
ca naravyāghra yathā vāyuḥ tathā kṛṣṇaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
18. Just as a fire is fully kindled, so too is Arjuna (Pārtha); there is no doubt about this. And just as the wind, O tiger among men, so too is Krishna; there is no doubt.
नदतः पाञ्चजन्यस्य रसतो गाण्डिवस्य च ।
श्रुत्वा सर्वाणि सैन्यानि त्रासं यास्यन्ति भारत ॥१९॥
19. nadataḥ pāñcajanyasya rasato gāṇḍivasya ca ,
śrutvā sarvāṇi sainyāni trāsaṁ yāsyanti bhārata.
19. nadataḥ pāñcajanyasya rasataḥ gāṇḍivasya ca
śrutvā sarvāṇi sainyāni trāsaṃ yāsyanti bhārata
19. bhārata pāñcajanyasya nadataḥ ca gāṇḍivasya
rasataḥ śrutvā sarvāṇi sainyāni trāsaṃ yāsyanti
19. Upon hearing the roar of Pañcajanya (conch) and the twang of Gāṇḍīva (bow), all armies, O Bhārata, will be struck with terror.
कपिध्वजस्य चोत्पाते रथस्यामित्रकर्शिनः ।
शब्दं सोढुं न शक्ष्यन्ति त्वामृते वीर पार्थिवाः ॥२०॥
20. kapidhvajasya cotpāte rathasyāmitrakarśinaḥ ,
śabdaṁ soḍhuṁ na śakṣyanti tvāmṛte vīra pārthivāḥ.
20. kapidhvajasya ca utpāte rathasya amitrakarśinaḥ
śabdaṃ soḍhuṃ na śakṣyanti tvām ṛte vīra pārthivāḥ
20. vīra tvām ṛte pārthivāḥ kapidhvajasya amitrakarśinaḥ
rathasya ca utpāte śabdaṃ soḍhuṃ na śakṣyanti
20. Except for you, O hero, other kings will not be able to bear the sound and the formidable presence of the ape-bannered, enemy-destroying chariot.
को ह्यर्जुनं रणे योद्धुं त्वदन्यः पार्थिवोऽर्हति ।
यस्य दिव्यानि कर्माणि प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः ॥२१॥
21. ko hyarjunaṁ raṇe yoddhuṁ tvadanyaḥ pārthivo'rhati ,
yasya divyāni karmāṇi pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ.
21. kaḥ hi arjunaṃ raṇe yoddhuṃ tvat anyaḥ pārthivaḥ
arhati yasya divyāni karmāṇi pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ
21. hi tvat anyaḥ kaḥ pārthivaḥ raṇe arjunaṃ yoddhuṃ
arhati yasya divyāni karmāṇi manīṣiṇaḥ pravadanti
21. Indeed, what other king besides you is worthy to fight Arjuna in battle, whose divine actions (karma) are proclaimed by the wise?
अमानुषश्च संग्रामस्त्र्यम्बकेन च धीमतः ।
तस्माच्चैव वरः प्राप्तो दुष्प्रापश्चाकृतात्मभिः ॥२२॥
22. amānuṣaśca saṁgrāmastryambakena ca dhīmataḥ ,
tasmāccaiva varaḥ prāpto duṣprāpaścākṛtātmabhiḥ.
22. amānuṣaḥ ca saṅgrāmaḥ tryambakena ca dhīmataḥ tasmāt
ca eva varaḥ prāptaḥ duṣprāpaḥ ca akṛtātmabhiḥ
22. dhīmataḥ tryambakena ca amānuṣaḥ saṅgrāmaḥ ca tasmāt
eva ca varaḥ prāptaḥ akṛtātmabhiḥ ca duṣprāpaḥ
22. And a superhuman battle occurred with the wise Tryambaka (Śiva). From him, indeed, a boon was obtained, which is difficult for those whose inner self (ātman) is not perfected to attain.
तमद्याहं पाण्डवं युद्धशौण्डममृष्यमाणो भवतानुशिष्टः ।
आशीविषं दृष्टिहरं सुघोरमियां पुरस्कृत्य वधं जयं वा ॥२३॥
23. tamadyāhaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ yuddhaśauṇḍa;mamṛṣyamāṇo bhavatānuśiṣṭaḥ ,
āśīviṣaṁ dṛṣṭiharaṁ sughora;miyāṁ puraskṛtya vadhaṁ jayaṁ vā.
23. tam adya aham pāṇḍavam yuddhaśauṇḍam
amṛṣyamāṇaḥ bhavatā anuśiṣṭaḥ
āśīviṣam dṛṣṭiharam sughoram
imām puraskṛtya vadham jayam vā
23. adya bhavatā anuśiṣṭaḥ yuddhaśauṇḍam
tam pāṇḍavam amṛṣyamāṇaḥ
aham imām sughoram dṛṣṭiharam
āśīviṣam puraskṛtya vadham vā jayam
23. Today, instructed by you, I, unable to tolerate that Pāṇḍava, who is so adept in battle, will face either death or victory, confronting this extremely dreadful, sight-stealing venomous snake (Arjuna).
