जनमेजय उवाच ।
अनुज्ञातांस्तान्विदित्वा सरत्नधनसंचयान् ।
पाण्डवान्धार्तराष्ट्राणां कथमासीन्मनस्तदा ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
anujñātāṁstānviditvā saratnadhanasaṁcayān ,
pāṇḍavāndhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ kathamāsīnmanastadā.
1. janamejayaḥ uvāca anujñātān tān viditvā saratnadhana-saṃcayān
pāṇḍavān dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām katham āsīt manaḥ tadā
1. Janamejaya asked: "When they learned that the Pāṇḍavas had been granted permission by Dhṛtarāṣṭra, along with their accumulated jewels and wealth, how then were the minds of the Dhārtarāṣṭras (sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra)?"
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अनुज्ञातांस्तान्विदित्वा धृतराष्ट्रेण धीमता ।
राजन्दुःशासनः क्षिप्रं जगाम भ्रातरं प्रति ॥२॥
2. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
anujñātāṁstānviditvā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa dhīmatā ,
rājanduḥśāsanaḥ kṣipraṁ jagāma bhrātaraṁ prati.
2. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca anujñātān tān viditvā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa
dhīmatā rājan duḥśāsanaḥ kṣipram jagāma bhrātaram prati
2. Vaiśampāyana said: "O King, upon learning that they (the Pāṇḍavas) had been granted permission by the wise Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Duḥśāsana swiftly went to his brother."
दुर्योधनं समासाद्य सामात्यं भरतर्षभ ।
दुःखार्तो भरतश्रेष्ठ इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. duryodhanaṁ samāsādya sāmātyaṁ bharatarṣabha ,
duḥkhārto bharataśreṣṭha idaṁ vacanamabravīt.
3. duryodhanam samāsādya sa-amātyam bharatarṣabha
duḥkhārtaḥ bharataśreṣṭha idam vacanam abravīt
3. O bull among the Bhāratas, O best of the Bhāratas, having approached Duryodhana, who was accompanied by his ministers, Duḥśāsana, distressed by sorrow, spoke these words.
दुःखेनैतत्समानीतं स्थविरो नाशयत्यसौ ।
शत्रुसाद्गमयद्द्रव्यं तद्बुध्यध्वं महारथाः ॥४॥
4. duḥkhenaitatsamānītaṁ sthaviro nāśayatyasau ,
śatrusādgamayaddravyaṁ tadbudhyadhvaṁ mahārathāḥ.
4. duḥkhena etat samānītam sthaviraḥ nāśayati asau
śatrusaat gamayat dravyam tat budhyadhvam mahārathāḥ
4. This wealth, acquired with great difficulty, that old man is now destroying, letting it go to our enemies. O great warriors, understand this!
अथ दुर्योधनः कर्णः शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ।
मिथः संगम्य सहिताः पाण्डवान्प्रति मानिनः ॥५॥
5. atha duryodhanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ ,
mithaḥ saṁgamya sahitāḥ pāṇḍavānprati māninaḥ.
5. atha duryodhanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniḥ ca api saubalaḥ
mithaḥ saṃgamya sahitāḥ pāṇḍavān prati māninaḥ
5. Then Duryodhana, Karṇa, and Shakuni, the son of Subala, being proud, gathered together among themselves concerning the Pāṇḍavas.
वैचित्रवीर्यं राजानं धृतराष्ट्रं मनीषिणम् ।
अभिगम्य त्वरायुक्ताः श्लक्ष्णं वचनमब्रुवन् ॥६॥
6. vaicitravīryaṁ rājānaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ manīṣiṇam ,
abhigamya tvarāyuktāḥ ślakṣṇaṁ vacanamabruvan.
6. vaicitravīryam rājānam dhṛtarāṣṭram manīṣiṇam
abhigamya tvarāyuktāḥ ślakṣṇam vacanam abruvan
6. Filled with urgency, they approached King Dhritarāṣṭra, the wise son of Vichitravīrya, and spoke gentle words.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
न त्वयेदं श्रुतं राजन्यज्जगाद बृहस्पतिः ।
शक्रस्य नीतिं प्रवदन्विद्वान्देवपुरोहितः ॥७॥
7. duryodhana uvāca ,
na tvayedaṁ śrutaṁ rājanyajjagāda bṛhaspatiḥ ,
śakrasya nītiṁ pravadanvidvāndevapurohitaḥ.
7. duryodhanaḥ uvāca na tvayā idam śrutam rājan yat jagāda
bṛhaspatiḥ śakrasya nītim pravadan vidvān devapurohitaḥ
7. Duryodhana said: "O King, have you not heard what Bṛhaspati, the wise priest of the gods, declared as Śakra's policy?"
सर्वोपायैर्निहन्तव्याः शत्रवः शत्रुकर्षण ।
पुरा युद्धाद्बलाद्वापि प्रकुर्वन्ति तवाहितम् ॥८॥
8. sarvopāyairnihantavyāḥ śatravaḥ śatrukarṣaṇa ,
purā yuddhādbalādvāpi prakurvanti tavāhitam.
8. sarva-upāyaiḥ nihantavyāḥ śatravaḥ śatrukarṣaṇa
purā yuddhāt balāt vā api prakurvanti tava ahitam
8. O chastiser of enemies, foes should be eliminated by all means before they cause you harm, whether through war or by force.
ते वयं पाण्डवधनैः सर्वान्संपूज्य पार्थिवान् ।
यदि तान्योधयिष्यामः किं वा नः परिहास्यति ॥९॥
9. te vayaṁ pāṇḍavadhanaiḥ sarvānsaṁpūjya pārthivān ,
yadi tānyodhayiṣyāmaḥ kiṁ vā naḥ parihāsyati.
9. te vayam pāṇḍava-dhanaiḥ sarvān sampūjya pārthivān
yadi tān yodhayiṣyāmaḥ kim vā naḥ parihāsyati
9. If we, having honored all the kings with the wealth of the Pāṇḍavas, then fight against them, what will be left for us?
अहीनाशीविषान्क्रुद्धान्दंशाय समुपस्थितान् ।
कृत्वा कण्ठे च पृष्ठे च कः समुत्स्रष्टुमर्हति ॥१०॥
10. ahīnāśīviṣānkruddhāndaṁśāya samupasthitān ,
kṛtvā kaṇṭhe ca pṛṣṭhe ca kaḥ samutsraṣṭumarhati.
10. ahīn āśīviṣān kruddhān daṃśāya samupasthitān
kṛtvā kaṇṭhe ca pṛṣṭhe ca kaḥ samutsraṣṭum arhati
10. Who would be willing to release angry, venomous snakes, poised to bite, after having placed them around his neck and on his back?
आत्तशस्त्रा रथगताः कुपितास्तात पाण्डवाः ।
निःशेषं नः करिष्यन्ति क्रुद्धा ह्याशीविषा यथा ॥११॥
11. āttaśastrā rathagatāḥ kupitāstāta pāṇḍavāḥ ,
niḥśeṣaṁ naḥ kariṣyanti kruddhā hyāśīviṣā yathā.
11. ātta-śastrāḥ ratha-gatāḥ kupitāḥ tāta pāṇḍavāḥ
niḥśeṣam naḥ kariṣyanti kruddhāḥ hi āśīviṣāḥ yathā
11. O father, the Pāṇḍavas, with weapons drawn, mounted on their chariots, and infuriated, will completely annihilate us, just as angry venomous snakes would.
संनद्धो ह्यर्जुनो याति विवृत्य परमेषुधी ।
गाण्डीवं मुहुरादत्ते निःश्वसंश्च निरीक्षते ॥१२॥
12. saṁnaddho hyarjuno yāti vivṛtya parameṣudhī ,
gāṇḍīvaṁ muhurādatte niḥśvasaṁśca nirīkṣate.
12. saṃnaddhaḥ hi arjunaḥ yāti vivṛtya parameṣudhī
gāṇḍīvam muhuḥ ādatte niḥśvasan ca nirīkṣate
12. Indeed, Arjuna, fully armed, advances, opening his excellent quivers. He repeatedly draws his Gāṇḍīva bow, and sighing, he observes.
गदां गुर्वीं समुद्यम्य त्वरितश्च वृकोदरः ।
स्वरथं योजयित्वाशु निर्यात इति नः श्रुतम् ॥१३॥
13. gadāṁ gurvīṁ samudyamya tvaritaśca vṛkodaraḥ ,
svarathaṁ yojayitvāśu niryāta iti naḥ śrutam.
13. gadām gurvīm samudyamya tvaritaḥ ca vṛkodaraḥ
svaratham yojayitvā āśu niryātaḥ iti naḥ śrutam
13. Bhīma (Vṛkodara), having quickly raised his heavy mace and swiftly yoked his own chariot, set out; this is what we have heard.
नकुलः खड्गमादाय चर्म चाप्यष्टचन्द्रकम् ।
सहदेवश्च राजा च चक्रुराकारमिङ्गितैः ॥१४॥
14. nakulaḥ khaḍgamādāya carma cāpyaṣṭacandrakam ,
sahadevaśca rājā ca cakrurākāramiṅgitaiḥ.
14. nakulaḥ khaḍgam ādāya carma ca api aṣṭacandrakam
sahadevaḥ ca rājā ca cakruḥ ākāram iṅgitaiḥ
14. Nakula, taking his sword and a shield adorned with eight moons, and Sahadeva and King Yudhiṣṭhira conveyed their intentions through gestures.
ते त्वास्थाय रथान्सर्वे बहुशस्त्रपरिच्छदान् ।
अभिघ्नन्तो रथव्रातान्सेनायोगाय निर्ययुः ॥१५॥
15. te tvāsthāya rathānsarve bahuśastraparicchadān ,
abhighnanto rathavrātānsenāyogāya niryayuḥ.
15. te tu āsthāya rathān sarve bahuśastraparicchadān
abhighnantaḥ rathavrātan senāyogāya niryayuḥ
15. And all of them, having mounted their chariots, which were equipped with many weapons, charged against the throngs of chariots and set out for the battle formation.
न क्षंस्यन्ते तथास्माभिर्जातु विप्रकृता हि ते ।
द्रौपद्याश्च परिक्लेशं कस्तेषां क्षन्तुमर्हति ॥१६॥
16. na kṣaṁsyante tathāsmābhirjātu viprakṛtā hi te ,
draupadyāśca parikleśaṁ kasteṣāṁ kṣantumarhati.
16. na kṣaṃsyante tathā asmābhiḥ jātu viprakṛtāḥ hi te
draupadyāḥ ca parikleśam kaḥ teṣām kṣantum arhati
16. Indeed, they will never forgive us for the way we ill-treated them. And who among them could possibly forgive Draupadi's suffering?
पुनर्दीव्याम भद्रं ते वनवासाय पाण्डवैः ।
एवमेतान्वशे कर्तुं शक्ष्यामो भरतर्षभ ॥१७॥
17. punardīvyāma bhadraṁ te vanavāsāya pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
evametānvaśe kartuṁ śakṣyāmo bharatarṣabha.
17. punar dīvyāma bhadram te vanavāsāya pāṇḍavaiḥ
evam etān vaśe kartum śakṣyāmaḥ bharatarṣabha
17. Good fortune to you! Let us play dice again with the Pāṇḍavas, with forest dwelling as the stake. In this way, O best of Bharatas, we will be able to bring them under our control.
ते वा द्वादश वर्षाणि वयं वा द्यूतनिर्जिताः ।
प्रविशेम महारण्यमजिनैः प्रतिवासिताः ॥१८॥
18. te vā dvādaśa varṣāṇi vayaṁ vā dyūtanirjitāḥ ,
praviśema mahāraṇyamajinaiḥ prativāsitāḥ.
18. te vā dvādaśa varṣāṇi vayam vā dyūtanirjitāḥ
praviśema mahāraṇyam ajinaiḥ prativāsitāḥ
18. Either they or we, having been defeated in gambling, should enter the great forest for twelve years, clothed in deer skins.
त्रयोदशं च सजने अज्ञाताः परिवत्सरम् ।
ज्ञाताश्च पुनरन्यानि वने वर्षाणि द्वादश ॥१९॥
19. trayodaśaṁ ca sajane ajñātāḥ parivatsaram ,
jñātāśca punaranyāni vane varṣāṇi dvādaśa.
19. trayodaśam ca sajane ajñātāḥ parivatsaram
jñātāḥ ca punar anyāni vane varṣāṇi dvādaśa
19. And the thirteenth year (must be spent) unrecognized in populated areas. If (they are) recognized, then again another twelve years in the forest (must be spent).
निवसेम वयं ते वा तथा द्यूतं प्रवर्तताम् ।
अक्षानुप्त्वा पुनर्द्यूतमिदं दीव्यन्तु पाण्डवाः ॥२०॥
20. nivasema vayaṁ te vā tathā dyūtaṁ pravartatām ,
akṣānuptvā punardyūtamidaṁ dīvyantu pāṇḍavāḥ.
20. nivasema vayam te vā tathā dyūtam pravartatām
akṣān uptvā punar dyūtam idam dīvyantu pāṇḍavāḥ
20. Let us (Kauravas) live (in peace), or let the dice game proceed in this manner: the Pāṇḍavas, having cast the dice, should play this game again.
एतत्कृत्यतमं राजन्नस्माकं भरतर्षभ ।
अयं हि शकुनिर्वेद सविद्यामक्षसंपदम् ॥२१॥
21. etatkṛtyatamaṁ rājannasmākaṁ bharatarṣabha ,
ayaṁ hi śakunirveda savidyāmakṣasaṁpadam.
21. etat kṛtyatamam rājan asmākam bharatarṣabha
ayam hi śakuniḥ veda savidyām akṣasaṃpadam
21. O King, O best among the Bhāratas, this (rematch) is most advisable for us. Indeed, this Śakuni knows the entire skill of dice-play.
दृढमूला वयं राज्ये मित्राणि परिगृह्य च ।
सारवद्विपुलं सैन्यं सत्कृत्य च दुरासदम् ॥२२॥
22. dṛḍhamūlā vayaṁ rājye mitrāṇi parigṛhya ca ,
sāravadvipulaṁ sainyaṁ satkṛtya ca durāsadam.
22. dṛḍhamūlā vayam rājye mitrāṇi parigṛhya ca
sāravat vipulam sainyam satkṛtya ca durāsadam
22. We are firmly established in the kingdom, having secured our allies, and also having strengthened a substantial, vast, and unassailable army.
ते च त्रयोदशे वर्षे पारयिष्यन्ति चेद्व्रतम् ।
जेष्यामस्तान्वयं राजन्रोचतां ते परंतप ॥२३॥
23. te ca trayodaśe varṣe pārayiṣyanti cedvratam ,
jeṣyāmastānvayaṁ rājanrocatāṁ te paraṁtapa.
23. te ca trayodaśe varṣe pārayiṣyanti cet vratam
jeṣyāmaḥ tān vayam rājan rocatām te paraṃtapa
23. And if they (the Pāṇḍavas) complete their vow in the thirteenth year, we will (still) conquer them, O King. Let this be agreeable to you, O tormentor of foes (paraṃtapa).
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
तूर्णं प्रत्यानयस्वैतान्कामं व्यध्वगतानपि ।
आगच्छन्तु पुनर्द्यूतमिदं कुर्वन्तु पाण्डवाः ॥२४॥
24. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
tūrṇaṁ pratyānayasvaitānkāmaṁ vyadhvagatānapi ,
āgacchantu punardyūtamidaṁ kurvantu pāṇḍavāḥ.
24. Dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca | tūrṇam pratyānayasva etān kāmam vyadhvagatan
api | āgacchantu punaḥ dyūtam idam kurvantu pāṇḍavāḥ
24. Dhritarashtra said: "Quickly bring them back, even if they have gone far on their journey. Let the Pandavas come again and play this game of dice."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो द्रोणः सोमदत्तो बाह्लीकश्च महारथः ।
विदुरो द्रोणपुत्रश्च वैश्यापुत्रश्च वीर्यवान् ॥२५॥
25. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato droṇaḥ somadatto bāhlīkaśca mahārathaḥ ,
viduro droṇaputraśca vaiśyāputraśca vīryavān.
25. Vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca | tataḥ droṇaḥ somadattaḥ bāhlīkaḥ ca
mahārathaḥ | viduraḥ droṇaputraḥ ca vaiśyāputraḥ ca vīryavān
25. Vaishampayana said: "Then Drona, Somadatta, and the great charioteer (mahāratha) Bahlika, as well as Vidura, Drona's son (Aśvatthāman), and the powerful son of the Vaishya woman (Yuyutsu)"
भूरिश्रवाः शांतनवो विकर्णश्च महारथः ।
मा द्यूतमित्यभाषन्त शमोऽस्त्विति च सर्वशः ॥२६॥
26. bhūriśravāḥ śāṁtanavo vikarṇaśca mahārathaḥ ,
mā dyūtamityabhāṣanta śamo'stviti ca sarvaśaḥ.
26. Bhūriśravāḥ śāntanavaḥ vikarṇaḥ ca mahārathaḥ | mā
dyūtam iti abhāṣanta śamaḥ astu iti ca sarvaśaḥ
26. Bhurishravas, the son of Shantanu (Bhishma), and Vikarna, the great charioteer (mahāratha), all of them said, "No more gambling (dyūta)! Let there be peace!"
अकामानां च सर्वेषां सुहृदामर्थदर्शिनाम् ।
अकरोत्पाण्डवाह्वानं धृतराष्ट्रः सुतप्रियः ॥२७॥
27. akāmānāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ suhṛdāmarthadarśinām ,
akarotpāṇḍavāhvānaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ sutapriyaḥ.
27. akāmānām ca sarveṣām suhṛdām arthadarśinām |
akarot pāṇḍavāhvānam dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ sutapriyaḥ
27. Despite the wishes of all his well-wishing friends, who could see the consequences, Dhritarashtra, who was fond of his sons, arranged for the summons of the Pandavas.
अथाब्रवीन्महाराज धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम् ।
पुत्रहार्दाद्धर्मयुक्तं गान्धारी शोककर्शिता ॥२८॥
28. athābravīnmahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ janeśvaram ,
putrahārdāddharmayuktaṁ gāndhārī śokakarśitā.
28. atha abravīt mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭram janeśvaram
putrahārdāt dharmayuktam gāndhārī śokakarśitā
28. Then, O great king, Gandhari, emaciated by grief and moved by affection for her son, spoke to Dhritarashtra, the lord of the people, who was endowed with a sense of natural law (dharma).
जाते दुर्योधने क्षत्ता महामतिरभाषत ।
नीयतां परलोकाय साध्वयं कुलपांसनः ॥२९॥
29. jāte duryodhane kṣattā mahāmatirabhāṣata ,
nīyatāṁ paralokāya sādhvayaṁ kulapāṁsanaḥ.
29. jāte duryodhane kṣattā mahāmatiḥ abhāṣata
nīyatām paralokāya sādhu ayam kulapāṃsanaḥ
29. When Duryodhana was born, Vidura, the greatly intelligent minister, spoke: 'Indeed, let this disgrace of the family be sent to the other world (i.e., be killed).'
व्यनदज्जातमात्रो हि गोमायुरिव भारत ।
अन्तो नूनं कुलस्यास्य कुरवस्तन्निबोधत ॥३०॥
30. vyanadajjātamātro hi gomāyuriva bhārata ,
anto nūnaṁ kulasyāsya kuravastannibodhata.
30. vyanadat jātamātraḥ hi gomāyuḥ iva bhārata
antaḥ nūnam kulasya asya kuravaḥ tat nibodhata
30. Indeed, as soon as he was born, he roared like a jackal, O descendant of Bharata! O Kurus, understand this well: certainly, this portends the end of this family.
मा बालानामशिष्टानामभिमंस्था मतिं प्रभो ।
मा कुलस्य क्षये घोरे कारणं त्वं भविष्यसि ॥३१॥
31. mā bālānāmaśiṣṭānāmabhimaṁsthā matiṁ prabho ,
mā kulasya kṣaye ghore kāraṇaṁ tvaṁ bhaviṣyasi.
31. mā bālānām aśiṣṭānām abhimaṃsthāḥ matim prabho
mā kulasya kṣaye ghore kāraṇam tvam bhaviṣyasi
31. O lord, do not give credence to the advice of these immature and ill-behaved ones. May you not become the cause of this terrible destruction of the family.
बद्धं सेतुं को नु भिन्द्याद्धमेच्छान्तं च पावकम् ।
शमे धृतान्पुनः पार्थान्कोपयेत्को नु भारत ॥३२॥
32. baddhaṁ setuṁ ko nu bhindyāddhamecchāntaṁ ca pāvakam ,
śame dhṛtānpunaḥ pārthānkopayetko nu bhārata.
32. baddham setum kaḥ nu bhindyāt dhamet śāntam ca pāvakam
śame dhṛtān punaḥ pārthān kopayet kaḥ nu bhārata
32. Who, indeed, would break a built bridge? And who would fan a pacified fire? O Bhārata, who would again provoke the sons of Pṛthā (Pārthas) who are kept in peace?
स्मरन्तं त्वामाजमीढ स्मारयिष्याम्यहं पुनः ।
शास्त्रं न शास्ति दुर्बुद्धिं श्रेयसे वेतराय वा ॥३३॥
33. smarantaṁ tvāmājamīḍha smārayiṣyāmyahaṁ punaḥ ,
śāstraṁ na śāsti durbuddhiṁ śreyase vetarāya vā.
33. smarantam tvām ājamīḍha smārayiṣyāmi aham punaḥ
śāstram na śāsti durbuddhim śreyase vā itarāya vā
33. O Ājamīḍha, though you are remembering (what I said), I will remind you again. Scripture (śāstra) does not instruct a person with a foolish mind for their well-being (śreyas) or for anything else (its opposite).
न वै वृद्धो बालमतिर्भवेद्राजन्कथंचन ।
त्वन्नेत्राः सन्तु ते पुत्रा मा त्वां दीर्णाः प्रहासिषुः ॥३४॥
34. na vai vṛddho bālamatirbhavedrājankathaṁcana ,
tvannetrāḥ santu te putrā mā tvāṁ dīrṇāḥ prahāsiṣuḥ.
34. na vai vṛddhaḥ bālamatiḥ bhavet rājan kathaṃcana
tvannetrāḥ santu te putrāḥ mā tvām dīrṇāḥ prahāsiṣuḥ
34. O King (rājan), an old man should never, by any means, possess a childish mind. May your sons be guided by you, and may they not abandon you, torn apart by conflict.
शमेन धर्मेण परस्य बुद्ध्या जाता बुद्धिः सास्तु ते मा प्रतीपा ।
प्रध्वंसिनी क्रूरसमाहिता श्रीर्मृदुप्रौढा गच्छति पुत्रपौत्रान् ॥३५॥
35. śamena dharmeṇa parasya buddhyā; jātā buddhiḥ sāstu te mā pratīpā ,
pradhvaṁsinī krūrasamāhitā śrī;rmṛduprauḍhā gacchati putrapautrān.
35. śamena dharmeṇa parasya buddhyā
jātā buddhiḥ sā astu te mā pratīpā
pradhvaṃsinī krūrasamāhitā śrīḥ
mṛduprauḍhā gacchati putrapautrān
35. May that understanding (buddhi) which arises from peace, righteousness (dharma), and the intellect of others be yours, and may it not be contrary (to good counsel). Prosperity (śrī) attained through cruel means is destructive, whereas prosperity (śrī) that is achieved with gentleness and firmness extends to one's sons and grandsons.
अथाब्रवीन्महाराजो गान्धारीं धर्मदर्शिनीम् ।
अन्तः कामं कुलस्यास्तु न शक्ष्यामि निवारितुम् ॥३६॥
36. athābravīnmahārājo gāndhārīṁ dharmadarśinīm ,
antaḥ kāmaṁ kulasyāstu na śakṣyāmi nivāritum.

antaḥ kāmam kulasya astu na śakṣyāmi nivārayitum
36. Then the great king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) spoke to Gāndhārī, who was discerning in righteousness (dharma): "Let the family's ruin certainly come to pass. I am unable to prevent it."
यथेच्छन्ति तथैवास्तु प्रत्यागच्छन्तु पाण्डवाः ।
पुनर्द्यूतं प्रकुर्वन्तु मामकाः पाण्डवैः सह ॥३७॥
37. yathecchanti tathaivāstu pratyāgacchantu pāṇḍavāḥ ,
punardyūtaṁ prakurvantu māmakāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha.
37. yathā icchanti tathā eva astu pratyāgacchantu pāṇḍavāḥ
punaḥ dyūtam prakurvantu māmakāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha
37. Let it be just as they desire. Let the Pāṇḍavas return, and let my sons play dice again with the Pāṇḍavas.
