संजय उवाच ।
केशवस्य तु तद्वाक्यं कर्णः श्रुत्वा हितं शुभम् ।
अब्रवीदभिसंपूज्य कृष्णं मधुनिषूदनम् ।
जानन्मां किं महाबाहो संमोहयितुमिच्छसि ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
keśavasya tu tadvākyaṁ karṇaḥ śrutvā hitaṁ śubham ,
abravīdabhisaṁpūjya kṛṣṇaṁ madhuniṣūdanam ,
jānanmāṁ kiṁ mahābāho saṁmohayitumicchasi.

karṇaḥ śrutvā hitam śubham | abravīt
abhipūjya kṛṣṇam madhuniṣūdanam | jānan

1. Sanjaya said: But Karna, having heard that beneficial and auspicious statement of Keśava, and having duly honored Kṛṣṇa, the slayer of Madhu, said: 'O mighty-armed one, knowing me, why do you wish to delude me?'
योऽयं पृथिव्याः कार्त्स्न्येन विनाशः समुपस्थितः ।
निमित्तं तत्र शकुनिरहं दुःशासनस्तथा ।
दुर्योधनश्च नृपतिर्धृतराष्ट्रसुतोऽभवत् ॥२॥
2. yo'yaṁ pṛthivyāḥ kārtsnyena vināśaḥ samupasthitaḥ ,
nimittaṁ tatra śakunirahaṁ duḥśāsanastathā ,
duryodhanaśca nṛpatirdhṛtarāṣṭrasuto'bhavat.
2. yaḥ ayam pṛthivyāḥ kārtsnyena vināśaḥ
samupasthitaḥ nimittam tatra śakuniḥ
aham duḥśāsanaḥ tathā duryodhanaḥ

tatra nimittam śakuniḥ,
aham,
duḥśāsanaḥ tathā ca nṛpatiḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasutaḥ duryodhanaḥ abhavat
2. This complete destruction of the earth, which has now become imminent, has its cause in Shakuni, myself, Duhshasana, and King Duryodhana, the son of Dhritarashtra.
असंशयमिदं कृष्ण महद्युद्धमुपस्थितम् ।
पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च घोरं रुधिरकर्दमम् ॥३॥
3. asaṁśayamidaṁ kṛṣṇa mahadyuddhamupasthitam ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ kurūṇāṁ ca ghoraṁ rudhirakardamam.

pāṇḍavānām kurūṇām ca ghoram rudhirakardamam
3. kṛṣṇa,
idam asaṃśayam (asti yat) pāṇḍavānām kurūṇām ca mahat ghoram rudhirakardamam yuddham upasthitam (asti)
3. Without a doubt, O Krishna, a great and dreadful war, filled with a mire of blood, is imminent between the Pandavas and the Kurus.
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च दुर्योधनवशानुगाः ।
रणे शस्त्राग्निना दग्धाः प्राप्स्यन्ति यमसादनम् ॥४॥
4. rājāno rājaputrāśca duryodhanavaśānugāḥ ,
raṇe śastrāgninā dagdhāḥ prāpsyanti yamasādanam.

4. Kings and princes who are subservient to Duryodhana will be consumed by the fire of weapons in battle and will reach the abode of Yama, the god of death.
स्वप्ना हि बहवो घोरा दृश्यन्ते मधुसूदन ।
निमित्तानि च घोराणि तथोत्पाताः सुदारुणाः ॥५॥
5. svapnā hi bahavo ghorā dṛśyante madhusūdana ,
nimittāni ca ghorāṇi tathotpātāḥ sudāruṇāḥ.

5. madhusūdana,

5. Indeed, O Madhusudana, many dreadful dreams are being seen, as are terrible omens and exceedingly dire portents.
पराजयं धार्तराष्ट्रे विजयं च युधिष्ठिरे ।
शंसन्त इव वार्ष्णेय विविधा लोमहर्षणाः ॥६॥
6. parājayaṁ dhārtarāṣṭre vijayaṁ ca yudhiṣṭhire ,
śaṁsanta iva vārṣṇeya vividhā lomaharṣaṇāḥ.

6. O Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa), various hair-raising omens appear to be foretelling defeat for the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and victory for Yudhiṣṭhira.
प्राजापत्यं हि नक्षत्रं ग्रहस्तीक्ष्णो महाद्युतिः ।
शनैश्चरः पीडयति पीडयन्प्राणिनोऽधिकम् ॥७॥
7. prājāpatyaṁ hi nakṣatraṁ grahastīkṣṇo mahādyutiḥ ,
śanaiścaraḥ pīḍayati pīḍayanprāṇino'dhikam.
7. prājāpatyam hi nakṣatram grahaḥ tīkṣṇaḥ mahādyutiḥ
śanaiścaraḥ pīḍayati pīḍayan prāṇinaḥ adhikam

nakṣatram pīḍayati adhikam prāṇinaḥ pīḍayan
7. Indeed, the fierce and greatly luminous planet (graha) Saturn (śanaiścara) afflicts the constellation (nakṣatra) known as Prājāpatya, thereby greatly tormenting living beings.
कृत्वा चाङ्गारको वक्रं ज्येष्ठायां मधुसूदन ।
अनुराधां प्रार्थयते मैत्रं संशमयन्निव ॥८॥
8. kṛtvā cāṅgārako vakraṁ jyeṣṭhāyāṁ madhusūdana ,
anurādhāṁ prārthayate maitraṁ saṁśamayanniva.
8. kṛtvā ca aṅgārakaḥ vakram jyeṣṭhāyām madhusūdana
anurādhām prārthayate maitram saṃśamayan iva
8. madhusūdana ca aṅgārakaḥ jyeṣṭhāyām vakram kṛtvā

8. O Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa), the planet Mars (aṅgārakaḥ), having moved retrogradely in the Jyeṣṭhā constellation, now seeks the Anurādhā constellation, as if trying to secure friendship (maitra).
नूनं महद्भयं कृष्ण कुरूणां समुपस्थितम् ।
विशेषेण हि वार्ष्णेय चित्रां पीडयते ग्रहः ॥९॥
9. nūnaṁ mahadbhayaṁ kṛṣṇa kurūṇāṁ samupasthitam ,
viśeṣeṇa hi vārṣṇeya citrāṁ pīḍayate grahaḥ.
9. nūnam mahat bhayam kṛṣṇa kurūṇām samupasthitam
viśeṣeṇa hi vārṣṇeya citrām pīḍayate grahaḥ
9. kṛṣṇa nūnam mahat bhayam kurūṇām samupasthitam
hi vārṣṇeya viśeṣeṇa grahaḥ citrām pīḍayate
9. Certainly, O Kṛṣṇa, a great danger has befallen the Kurus. For especially, O Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa), a planet (graha) is afflicting the Citrā constellation.
सोमस्य लक्ष्म व्यावृत्तं राहुरर्कमुपेष्यति ।
दिवश्चोल्काः पतन्त्येताः सनिर्घाताः सकम्पनाः ॥१०॥
10. somasya lakṣma vyāvṛttaṁ rāhurarkamupeṣyati ,
divaścolkāḥ patantyetāḥ sanirghātāḥ sakampanāḥ.
10. somasya lakṣma vyāvṛttaṃ rāhuḥ arkam upeṣyati
divaḥ ca ulkāḥ patanti etāḥ sanirghātāḥ sakampanāḥ
10. somasya lakṣma vyāvṛttaṃ rāhuḥ arkam upeṣyati ca
divas etāḥ ulkāḥ sanirghātāḥ sakampanāḥ patanti
10. The moon's mark (dark spots) is obscured, and Rahu is about to approach the sun. Moreover, these meteors are falling from the sky accompanied by thunderous crashes and tremors.
निष्टनन्ति च मातङ्गा मुञ्चन्त्यश्रूणि वाजिनः ।
पानीयं यवसं चापि नाभिनन्दन्ति माधव ॥११॥
11. niṣṭananti ca mātaṅgā muñcantyaśrūṇi vājinaḥ ,
pānīyaṁ yavasaṁ cāpi nābhinandanti mādhava.
11. niṣṭananti ca mātaṅgāḥ muñcanti aśrūṇi vājinaḥ
pānīyaṃ yavasaṃ ca api na abhinandanti mādhava
11. mādhava mātaṅgāḥ ca niṣṭananti vājinaḥ aśrūṇi
muñcanti ca api pānīyaṃ yavasaṃ na abhinandanti
11. And elephants bellow, while horses shed tears. Furthermore, they do not even desire water or fodder, O Madhava.
प्रादुर्भूतेषु चैतेषु भयमाहुरुपस्थितम् ।
निमित्तेषु महाबाहो दारुणं प्राणिनाशनम् ॥१२॥
12. prādurbhūteṣu caiteṣu bhayamāhurupasthitam ,
nimitteṣu mahābāho dāruṇaṁ prāṇināśanam.
12. prādurbhūteṣu ca eteṣu bhayam āhuḥ upasthitam
nimitteṣu mahābāho dāruṇam prāṇināśanam
12. mahābāho eteṣu nimitteṣu prādurbhūteṣu ca
bhayam dāruṇam prāṇināśanam upasthitam āhuḥ
12. When these omens (nimitteṣu) manifest (prādurbhūteṣu), it is said that terrible fear and the destruction of living beings (prāṇināśanam) are imminent, O mighty-armed one.
अल्पे भुक्ते पुरीषं च प्रभूतमिह दृश्यते ।
वाजिनां वारणानां च मनुष्याणां च केशव ॥१३॥
13. alpe bhukte purīṣaṁ ca prabhūtamiha dṛśyate ,
vājināṁ vāraṇānāṁ ca manuṣyāṇāṁ ca keśava.
13. alpe bhukte purīṣam ca prabhūtam iha dṛśyate
vājinām vāraṇānām ca manuṣyāṇām ca keśava
13. keśava iha alpe bhukte vājinām vāraṇānām
ca manuṣyāṇām ca prabhūtam purīṣam dṛśyate
13. Here, when only a small amount has been consumed, an abundant quantity of excrement is seen (dṛśyate) from horses, elephants, and humans, O Keshava.
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैन्येषु सर्वेषु मधुसूदन ।
पराभवस्य तल्लिङ्गमिति प्राहुर्मनीषिणः ॥१४॥
14. dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu sarveṣu madhusūdana ,
parābhavasya talliṅgamiti prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ.
14. dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu sarveṣu madhusūdana
parābhavasya tat liṅgam iti prāhuḥ manīṣiṇaḥ
14. madhusūdana manīṣiṇaḥ dhārtarāṣṭrasya sarveṣu
sainyeṣu tat parābhavasya liṅgam iti prāhuḥ
14. O Madhusūdana, the wise declare that this is an indication of defeat among all the armies of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons.
प्रहृष्टं वाहनं कृष्ण पाण्डवानां प्रचक्षते ।
प्रदक्षिणा मृगाश्चैव तत्तेषां जयलक्षणम् ॥१५॥
15. prahṛṣṭaṁ vāhanaṁ kṛṣṇa pāṇḍavānāṁ pracakṣate ,
pradakṣiṇā mṛgāścaiva tatteṣāṁ jayalakṣaṇam.
15. prahṛṣṭam vāhanam kṛṣṇa pāṇḍavānām pracakṣate
pradakṣiṇāḥ mṛgāḥ ca eva tat teṣām jayalakṣaṇam
15. kṛṣṇa pāṇḍavānām vāhanam prahṛṣṭam pracakṣate
ca eva mṛgāḥ pradakṣiṇāḥ tat teṣām jayalakṣaṇam
15. O Kṛṣṇa, they perceive the mounts of the Pāṇḍavas to be thrilled. Moreover, the animals moving auspiciously to the right are indeed a sign of their victory.
अपसव्या मृगाः सर्वे धार्तराष्ट्रस्य केशव ।
वाचश्चाप्यशरीरिण्यस्तत्पराभवलक्षणम् ॥१६॥
16. apasavyā mṛgāḥ sarve dhārtarāṣṭrasya keśava ,
vācaścāpyaśarīriṇyastatparābhavalakṣaṇam.
16. apasavyāḥ mṛgāḥ sarve dhārtarāṣṭrasya keśava
vācaḥ ca api aśarīriṇyaḥ tat parābhavalakṣaṇam
16. keśava dhārtarāṣṭrasya sarve mṛgāḥ apasavyāḥ
ca api aśarīriṇyaḥ vācaḥ tat parābhavalakṣaṇam
16. O Keśava, all the animals move inauspiciously to the left for Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons. Moreover, disembodied voices are heard; that is a sign of defeat.
मयूराः पुष्पशकुना हंसाः सारसचातकाः ।
जीवं जीवकसंघाश्चाप्यनुगच्छन्ति पाण्डवान् ॥१७॥
17. mayūrāḥ puṣpaśakunā haṁsāḥ sārasacātakāḥ ,
jīvaṁ jīvakasaṁghāścāpyanugacchanti pāṇḍavān.
17. mayūrāḥ puṣpaśakunāḥ haṃsāḥ sārasacātakāḥ
jīvaṃjīvakasaṃghāḥ ca api anugacchanti pāṇḍavān
17. mayūrāḥ puṣpaśakunāḥ haṃsāḥ sārasacātakāḥ ca
api jīvaṃjīvakasaṃghāḥ pāṇḍavān anugacchanti
17. Peacocks, auspicious songbirds, swans, sārasa cranes, cātaka birds, and flocks of jīvajīvaka birds also follow the Pāṇḍavas.
गृध्राः काका बडाः श्येना यातुधानाः शलावृकाः ।
मक्षिकाणां च संघाता अनुगच्छन्ति कौरवान् ॥१८॥
18. gṛdhrāḥ kākā baḍāḥ śyenā yātudhānāḥ śalāvṛkāḥ ,
makṣikāṇāṁ ca saṁghātā anugacchanti kauravān.
18. gṛdhrāḥ kākāḥ baḍāḥ śyenāḥ yātudhānāḥ śalāvṛkāḥ
makṣikāṇām ca saṃghātāḥ anugacchanti kauravān
18. gṛdhrāḥ kākāḥ baḍāḥ śyenāḥ yātudhānāḥ śalāvṛkāḥ
ca makṣikāṇām saṃghātāḥ kauravān anugacchanti
18. Vultures, crows, large predatory birds, hawks, demons (yātudhāna), jackals, and swarms of flies follow the Kauravas.
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैन्येषु भेरीणां नास्ति निस्वनः ।
अनाहताः पाण्डवानां नदन्ति पटहाः किल ॥१९॥
19. dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu bherīṇāṁ nāsti nisvanaḥ ,
anāhatāḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ nadanti paṭahāḥ kila.
19. dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu bherīṇām na asti
nisvanaḥ anāhatāḥ pāṇḍavānām nadanti paṭahāḥ kila
19. dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu bherīṇām nisvanaḥ na asti.
kila anāhatāḥ paṭahāḥ pāṇḍavānām nadanti.
19. In the armies of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, there is no sound (nisvana) from the war-drums. Yet, the kettle-drums of the Pāṇḍavas roar, though un-struck, indeed.
उदपानाश्च नर्दन्ति यथा गोवृषभास्तथा ।
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैन्येषु तत्पराभवलक्षणम् ॥२०॥
20. udapānāśca nardanti yathā govṛṣabhāstathā ,
dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu tatparābhavalakṣaṇam.
20. udapānāḥ ca nadanti yathā govṛṣabhāḥ tathā
dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu tat parābhavalakṣaṇam
20. udapānāḥ ca yathā govṛṣabhāḥ tathā nadanti.
tat dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu parābhavalakṣaṇam.
20. And the wells (udapāna) roar, just as bulls (govṛṣabha) do. This is a sign of defeat (parābhava-lakṣaṇa) for Dhṛtarāṣṭra's armies.
मांसशोणितवर्षं च वृष्टं देवेन माधव ।
तथा गन्धर्वनगरं भानुमन्तमुपस्थितम् ।
सप्राकारं सपरिखं सवप्रं चारुतोरणम् ॥२१॥
21. māṁsaśoṇitavarṣaṁ ca vṛṣṭaṁ devena mādhava ,
tathā gandharvanagaraṁ bhānumantamupasthitam ,
saprākāraṁ saparikhaṁ savapraṁ cārutoraṇam.
21. māṃsaśoṇitavarṣam ca vṛṣṭam devena
mādhava tathā gandharvanagaram
bhānumantam upasthitam saprākāram
saparikham savapram cārutoraṇam
21. mādhava,
ca māṃsaśoṇitavarṣam devena vṛṣṭam.
tathā bhānumantam saprākāram saparikham savapram cārutoraṇam gandharvanagaram upasthitam.
21. O Mādhava, a rain of flesh and blood (māṃsaśoṇitavarṣa) was showered by the heavens (deva), and similarly, a splendid (bhānumat) mirage-city (gandharvanagara) appeared, complete with ramparts (saprākāra), moats (saparikha), embankments (savapra), and beautiful gateways (cārutoraṇa).
कृष्णश्च परिघस्तत्र भानुमावृत्य तिष्ठति ।
उदयास्तमये संध्ये वेदयानो महद्भयम् ।
एका सृग्वाशते घोरं तत्पराभवलक्षणम् ॥२२॥
22. kṛṣṇaśca parighastatra bhānumāvṛtya tiṣṭhati ,
udayāstamaye saṁdhye vedayāno mahadbhayam ,
ekā sṛgvāśate ghoraṁ tatparābhavalakṣaṇam.
22. kṛṣṇaḥ ca parighaḥ tatra bhānum
āvṛtya tiṣṭhati udayāstamaye sandhye
vedayānaḥ mahat bhayam ekā sṛk
vāśate ghoram tat parābhavalakṣaṇam
22. tatra kṛṣṇaḥ parighaḥ bhānum āvṛtya
tiṣṭhati udayāstamaye sandhye
mahat bhayam vedayānaḥ ekā sṛk
ghoram vāśate tat parābhavalakṣaṇam
22. There, a dark halo (parigha) covers the sun and remains present. Indicating great fear at sunrise and sunset, in both twilights, a single bloody streak roars terribly; that is a sign of defeat.
कृष्णग्रीवाश्च शकुना लम्बमाना भयानकाः ।
संध्यामभिमुखा यान्ति तत्पराभवलक्षणम् ॥२३॥
23. kṛṣṇagrīvāśca śakunā lambamānā bhayānakāḥ ,
saṁdhyāmabhimukhā yānti tatparābhavalakṣaṇam.
23. kṛṣṇagrīvāḥ ca śakunāḥ lambamānāḥ bhayānakāḥ
sandhyām abhimukhāḥ yānti tat parābhavalakṣaṇam
23. kṛṣṇagrīvāḥ ca bhayānakāḥ lambamānāḥ śakunāḥ
sandhyām abhimukhāḥ yānti tat parābhavalakṣaṇam
23. And terrifying, black-necked birds, swooping, proceed facing the twilight; that is a sign of defeat.
ब्राह्मणान्प्रथमं द्वेष्टि गुरूंश्च मधुसूदन ।
भृत्यान्भक्तिमतश्चापि तत्पराभवलक्षणम् ॥२४॥
24. brāhmaṇānprathamaṁ dveṣṭi gurūṁśca madhusūdana ,
bhṛtyānbhaktimataścāpi tatparābhavalakṣaṇam.
24. brāhmaṇān prathamam dveṣṭi gurūn ca madhusūdana
bhṛtyān bhaktimataḥ ca api tat parābhavalakṣaṇam
24. madhusūdana,
saḥ prathamam brāhmaṇān gurūn ca dveṣṭi bhaktimataḥ bhṛtyān ca api tat parābhavalakṣaṇam
24. O Madhusūdana (slayer of Madhu), first he hates Brahmins and gurus, and also devoted (bhakti) servants; that is a sign of defeat.
पूर्वा दिग्लोहिताकारा शस्त्रवर्णा च दक्षिणा ।
आमपात्रप्रतीकाशा पश्चिमा मधुसूदन ॥२५॥
25. pūrvā diglohitākārā śastravarṇā ca dakṣiṇā ,
āmapātrapratīkāśā paścimā madhusūdana.

āmapātrapratīkāśā paścimā madhusūdana
25. madhusūdana,

25. O Madhusūdana, the eastern direction is red in appearance, and the southern (direction) is the color of weapons. The western (direction) resembles an unbaked pot.
प्रदीप्ताश्च दिशः सर्वा धार्तराष्ट्रस्य माधव ।
महद्भयं वेदयन्ति तस्मिन्नुत्पातलक्षणे ॥२६॥
26. pradīptāśca diśaḥ sarvā dhārtarāṣṭrasya mādhava ,
mahadbhayaṁ vedayanti tasminnutpātalakṣaṇe.
26. pradīptāḥ ca diśaḥ sarvāḥ dhārtarāṣṭrasya mādhava
mahat bhayam vedayanti tasmin utpātalakṣaṇe
26. mādhava dhārtarāṣṭrasya sarvāḥ diśaḥ ca pradīptāḥ
tasmin utpātalakṣaṇe mahat bhayam vedayanti
26. O Mādhava, all directions are blazing for Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, and these ominous signs forebode great fear.
सहस्रपादं प्रासादं स्वप्नान्ते स्म युधिष्ठिरः ।
अधिरोहन्मया दृष्टः सह भ्रातृभिरच्युत ॥२७॥
27. sahasrapādaṁ prāsādaṁ svapnānte sma yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
adhirohanmayā dṛṣṭaḥ saha bhrātṛbhiracyuta.

27. O Acyuta, I saw Yudhiṣṭhira in a dream, along with his brothers, ascending a thousand-pillared palace.
श्वेतोष्णीषाश्च दृश्यन्ते सर्वे ते शुक्लवाससः ।
आसनानि च शुभ्राणि सर्वेषामुपलक्षये ॥२८॥
28. śvetoṣṇīṣāśca dṛśyante sarve te śuklavāsasaḥ ,
āsanāni ca śubhrāṇi sarveṣāmupalakṣaye.
28. śvetoṣṇīṣāḥ ca dṛśyante sarve te śuklavāsasaḥ
āsanāni ca śubhrāṇi sarveṣām upalakṣaye
28. te sarve śvetoṣṇīṣāḥ ca śuklavāsasaḥ dṛśyante

28. All of them are seen wearing white turbans and white garments. And I observe bright seats for all of them.
तव चापि मया कृष्ण स्वप्नान्ते रुधिराविला ।
आन्त्रेण पृथिवी दृष्टा परिक्षिप्ता जनार्दन ॥२९॥
29. tava cāpi mayā kṛṣṇa svapnānte rudhirāvilā ,
āntreṇa pṛthivī dṛṣṭā parikṣiptā janārdana.

29. O Krishna, O Janārdana, in a dream I also saw your earth stained with blood and strewn with intestines.
अस्थिसंचयमारूढश्चामितौजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
सुवर्णपात्र्यां संहृष्टो भुक्तवान्घृतपायसम् ॥३०॥
30. asthisaṁcayamārūḍhaścāmitaujā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
suvarṇapātryāṁ saṁhṛṣṭo bhuktavānghṛtapāyasam.
30. asthisaṃcayam ārūḍhaḥ ca amitaujāḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
suvarṇapātryām saṃhṛṣṭaḥ bhuktavān ghṛtapāyasam
30. ca amitaujāḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ अस्थिसंचयम् आरूढः
संहृष्टः सुवर्णपात्र्याम् घृतपायसम् भुक्तवान्
30. And Yudhiṣṭhira, of immeasurable prowess, seated upon a heap of bones, delightedly ate rice pudding with ghee from a golden vessel.
युधिष्ठिरो मया दृष्टो ग्रसमानो वसुंधराम् ।
त्वया दत्तामिमां व्यक्तं भोक्ष्यते स वसुंधराम् ॥३१॥
31. yudhiṣṭhiro mayā dṛṣṭo grasamāno vasuṁdharām ,
tvayā dattāmimāṁ vyaktaṁ bhokṣyate sa vasuṁdharām.
31. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ mayā dṛṣṭaḥ grasamānaḥ vasundharām
tvayā dattām imām vyaktam bhokṣyate saḥ vasundharām
31. मया युधिष्ठिरः वसुंधराम् ग्रसमानः दृष्टः सः त्वया दत्ताम् इमाम् वसुंधराम् व्यक्तम् भोक्ष्यते ।
31. I saw Yudhiṣṭhira consuming the earth. He will certainly enjoy this earth which was given by you.
उच्चं पर्वतमारूढो भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः ।
गदापाणिर्नरव्याघ्रो वीक्षन्निव महीमिमाम् ॥३२॥
32. uccaṁ parvatamārūḍho bhīmakarmā vṛkodaraḥ ,
gadāpāṇirnaravyāghro vīkṣanniva mahīmimām.
32. uccam parvatam ārūḍhaḥ bhīmakarmā vṛkodaraḥ
gadāpāṇiḥ naravyāghraḥ vīkṣan iva mahīm imām
32. भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः गदापाणिः नरव्याघ्रः उच्चम् पर्वतम् आरूढः,
इमाम् महीम् वीक्षन् इव (asti).
32. Vṛkodara (Bhīma), the one of terrible deeds, holding a mace, a tiger among men, having ascended a high mountain, as if surveying this earth.
क्षपयिष्यति नः सर्वान्स सुव्यक्तं महारणे ।
विदितं मे हृषीकेश यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ॥३३॥
33. kṣapayiṣyati naḥ sarvānsa suvyaktaṁ mahāraṇe ,
viditaṁ me hṛṣīkeśa yato dharmastato jayaḥ.
33. kṣapayisyati naḥ sarvān saḥ suvyaktam mahāraṇe
viditam me hṛṣīkeśa yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
33. सः महारणे सुव्यक्तम् नः सर्वान् क्षपयिष्यति हृषीकेश,
मे विदितम् (asti) यतः धर्मः ततः जयः (asti) ।
33. He will certainly destroy all of us in the great battle. It is known to me, O Hṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa), that where there is righteousness (dharma), there is victory.
पाण्डुरं गजमारूढो गाण्डीवी स धनंजयः ।
त्वया सार्धं हृषीकेश श्रिया परमया ज्वलन् ॥३४॥
34. pāṇḍuraṁ gajamārūḍho gāṇḍīvī sa dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
tvayā sārdhaṁ hṛṣīkeśa śriyā paramayā jvalan.
34. pāṇḍuram gajam ārūḍhaḥ gāṇḍīvī saḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
tvayā sārdham hṛṣīkeśa śriyā paramayā jvalan
34. saḥ gāṇḍīvī dhanaṃjayaḥ pāṇḍuram gajam ārūḍhaḥ
hṛṣīkeśa tvayā sārdham paramayā śriyā jvalan
34. O Hṛṣīkeśa, that Arjuna (dhanaṃjaya), the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, mounted on a white elephant, is shining with supreme splendor along with you.
यूयं सर्वान्वधिष्यध्वं तत्र मे नास्ति संशयः ।
पार्थिवान्समरे कृष्ण दुर्योधनपुरोगमान् ॥३५॥
35. yūyaṁ sarvānvadhiṣyadhvaṁ tatra me nāsti saṁśayaḥ ,
pārthivānsamare kṛṣṇa duryodhanapurogamān.
35. yūyam sarvān vadhiṣyadhvam tatra me na asti
saṃśayaḥ pārthivān samare kṛṣṇa duryodhanapurogamān
35. kṛṣṇa yūyam tatra samare duryodhanapurogamān
sarvān pārthivān vadhiṣyadhvam me saṃśayaḥ na asti
35. O Kṛṣṇa, you will slay all the kings, with Duryodhana as their leader, there in battle. I have no doubt about it.
नकुलः सहदेवश्च सात्यकिश्च महारथः ।
शुद्धकेयूरकण्ठत्राः शुक्लमाल्याम्बरावृताः ॥३६॥
36. nakulaḥ sahadevaśca sātyakiśca mahārathaḥ ,
śuddhakeyūrakaṇṭhatrāḥ śuklamālyāmbarāvṛtāḥ.

36. Nakula, Sahadeva, and Sātyaki, the great charioteer (mahāratha), are adorned with pure armlets and neck-guards, and draped in white garlands and garments.
अधिरूढा नरव्याघ्रा नरवाहनमुत्तमम् ।
त्रय एते महामात्राः पाण्डुरच्छत्रवाससः ॥३७॥
37. adhirūḍhā naravyāghrā naravāhanamuttamam ,
traya ete mahāmātrāḥ pāṇḍuracchatravāsasaḥ.
37. adhirūḍhāḥ naravyāghrāḥ naravāhanam uttamam
trayaḥ ete mahāmātrāḥ pāṇḍuracchattravāsasaḥ
37. ete trayaḥ naravyāghrāḥ mahāmātrāḥ uttamam
naravāhanam adhirūḍhāḥ pāṇḍuracchattravāsasaḥ
37. These three great officials (mahāmātrāḥ), who are tiger-like among men (naravyāghrāḥ), are mounted on an excellent human-borne vehicle (naravāhanam) and wear white garments and hold white umbrellas.
श्वेतोष्णीषाश्च दृश्यन्ते त्रय एव जनार्दन ।
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैन्येषु तान्विजानीहि केशव ॥३८॥
38. śvetoṣṇīṣāśca dṛśyante traya eva janārdana ,
dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu tānvijānīhi keśava.
38. śvetoṣṇīṣāḥ ca dṛśyante trayaḥ eva janārdana
dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu tān vijānīhi keśava
38. janārdana keśava dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu

38. O Janardana, only three individuals wearing white turbans are seen in the armies of Dhritarashtra. O Keshav, please recognize them.
अश्वत्थामा कृपश्चैव कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः ।
रक्तोष्णीषाश्च दृश्यन्ते सर्वे माधव पार्थिवाः ॥३९॥
39. aśvatthāmā kṛpaścaiva kṛtavarmā ca sātvataḥ ,
raktoṣṇīṣāśca dṛśyante sarve mādhava pārthivāḥ.
39. aśvatthāmā kṛpaḥ ca eva kṛtavarmā ca sātvataḥ
raktoṣṇīṣāḥ ca dṛśyante sarve mādhava pārthivāḥ
39. mādhava aśvatthāmā kṛpaḥ ca eva kṛtavarmā ca
sātvataḥ sarve pārthivāḥ raktoṣṇīṣāḥ ca dṛśyante
39. O Madhava, Ashvatthama, Kripa, and Kritavarma, the Satvata, are all seen wearing red turbans.
उष्ट्रयुक्तं समारूढौ भीष्मद्रोणौ जनार्दन ।
मया सार्धं महाबाहो धार्तराष्ट्रेण चाभिभो ॥४०॥
40. uṣṭrayuktaṁ samārūḍhau bhīṣmadroṇau janārdana ,
mayā sārdhaṁ mahābāho dhārtarāṣṭreṇa cābhibho.
40. uṣṭrayuktam samārūḍhau bhīṣmadroṇau janārdana
mayā sārdham mahābāho dhārtarāṣṭreṇa ca abhibho
40. janārdana mahābāho abhibho bhīṣmadroṇau ca mayā

40. O Janardana, O mighty-armed one, O lord, Bhishma and Drona are riding in camel-drawn conveyances, accompanied by me and Duryodhana (the son of Dhritarashtra).
अगस्त्यशास्तां च दिशं प्रयाताः स्म जनार्दन ।
अचिरेणैव कालेन प्राप्स्यामो यमसादनम् ॥४१॥
41. agastyaśāstāṁ ca diśaṁ prayātāḥ sma janārdana ,
acireṇaiva kālena prāpsyāmo yamasādanam.
41. agastyasāstām ca diśam prayātāḥ sma janārdana
acireṇa eva kālena prāpsyāmaḥ yamasādanam
41. janārdana agastyasāstām diśam ca prayātāḥ
sma acireṇa eva kālena yamasādanam prāpsyāmaḥ
41. O Janardana, we have indeed set out towards the southern direction, which is ruled by Agastya, and will soon reach the abode of Yama (yamasādanam).
अहं चान्ये च राजानो यच्च तत्क्षत्रमण्डलम् ।
गाण्डीवाग्निं प्रवेक्ष्याम इति मे नास्ति संशयः ॥४२॥
42. ahaṁ cānye ca rājāno yacca tatkṣatramaṇḍalam ,
gāṇḍīvāgniṁ pravekṣyāma iti me nāsti saṁśayaḥ.
42. aham ca anye ca rājānaḥ yat ca tat kṣatramaṇḍalam
gāṇḍīvāgnim pravekṣyāma iti me na asti saṃśayaḥ
42. aham ca anye rājānaḥ ca tat yat kṣatramaṇḍalam
gāṇḍīvāgnim pravekṣyāma iti me saṃśayaḥ na asti
42. I, along with other kings, and indeed that entire assembly of warriors, will enter the fire of Gaṇḍīva (Arjuna's bow). Of this, I have no doubt.
कृष्ण उवाच ।
उपस्थितविनाशेयं नूनमद्य वसुंधरा ।
तथा हि मे वचः कर्ण नोपैति हृदयं तव ॥४३॥
43. kṛṣṇa uvāca ,
upasthitavināśeyaṁ nūnamadya vasuṁdharā ,
tathā hi me vacaḥ karṇa nopaiti hṛdayaṁ tava.
43. kṛṣṇaḥ uvāca upasthitavināśā iyam nūnam adya vasundharā
tathā hi me vacaḥ karṇa na upaiti hṛdayam tava
43. kṛṣṇaḥ uvāca he karṇa adya iyam vasundharā nūnam
upasthitavināśā tathā hi me vacaḥ tava hṛdayam na upaiti
43. Krishna said: O Karṇa, this earth (vasundharā) is indeed facing imminent destruction today. For truly, my words do not reach your heart.
सर्वेषां तात भूतानां विनाशे समुपस्थिते ।
अनयो नयसंकाशो हृदयान्नापसर्पति ॥४४॥
44. sarveṣāṁ tāta bhūtānāṁ vināśe samupasthite ,
anayo nayasaṁkāśo hṛdayānnāpasarpati.
44. sarveṣām tāta bhūtānām vināśe samupasthite
anayaḥ nayasaṃkāśaḥ hṛdayāt na apasarprati
44. tāta sarveṣām bhūtānām vināśe samupasthite
anayaḥ nayasaṃkāśaḥ hṛdayāt na apasarprati
44. O dear one (tāta), even when the destruction of all beings is at hand, this wrong policy (anaya) of yours, which appears like good policy, does not depart from your heart.
कर्ण उवाच ।
अपि त्वा कृष्ण पश्याम जीवन्तोऽस्मान्महारणात् ।
समुत्तीर्णा महाबाहो वीरक्षयविनाशनात् ॥४५॥
45. karṇa uvāca ,
api tvā kṛṣṇa paśyāma jīvanto'smānmahāraṇāt ,
samuttīrṇā mahābāho vīrakṣayavināśanāt.
45. karṇaḥ uvāca api tvā kṛṣṇa paśyāma jīvantaḥ asmāt
mahāraṇāt samuttīrṇāḥ mahābāho vīrakṣayavināśanāt
45. karṇaḥ uvāca api he kṛṣṇa he mahābāho asmāt mahāraṇāt
vīrakṣayavināśanāt samuttīrṇāḥ jīvantaḥ tvā paśyāma
45. Karṇa said: O Krishna, O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), will we, having survived and escaped this great war (mahāraṇāt) which annihilates heroes (vīrakṣayavināśanāt), see you again?
अथ वा संगमः कृष्ण स्वर्गे नो भविता ध्रुवम् ।
तत्रेदानीं समेष्यामः पुनः सार्धं त्वयानघ ॥४६॥
46. atha vā saṁgamaḥ kṛṣṇa svarge no bhavitā dhruvam ,
tatredānīṁ sameṣyāmaḥ punaḥ sārdhaṁ tvayānagha.
46. atha vā saṅgamaḥ kṛṣṇa svarge naḥ bhavitā dhruvam |
tatra idānīm sameṣyāmaḥ punaḥ sārdham tvayā anagha
46. kṛṣṇa anagha,
atha vā naḥ saṅgamaḥ svarge dhruvam bhavitā.
tatra idānīm punaḥ tvayā sārdham sameṣyāmaḥ.
46. Or perhaps, O Krishna, our reunion will surely take place in heaven. There, at that time, O sinless one, we will meet again with you.
संजय उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा माधवं कर्णः परिष्वज्य च पीडितम् ।
विसर्जितः केशवेन रथोपस्थादवातरत् ॥४७॥
47. saṁjaya uvāca ,
ityuktvā mādhavaṁ karṇaḥ pariṣvajya ca pīḍitam ,
visarjitaḥ keśavena rathopasthādavātarat.
47. sañjaya uvāca | iti uktvā mādhavam karṇaḥ pariṣvajya
ca pīḍitam | visarjitaḥ keśavena rathopasthāt avātarat
47. sañjaya uvāca karṇaḥ iti uktvā ca pīḍitam mādhavam pariṣvajya,
keśavena visarjitaḥ [san],
rathopasthāt avātarat.
47. Sañjaya said: Having spoken thus, Karṇa, distressed, embraced Mādhava. Dismissed by Keśava, he then alighted from the chariot's platform.
ततः स्वरथमास्थाय जाम्बूनदविभूषितम् ।
सहास्माभिर्निववृते राधेयो दीनमानसः ॥४८॥
48. tataḥ svarathamāsthāya jāmbūnadavibhūṣitam ,
sahāsmābhirnivavṛte rādheyo dīnamānasaḥ.
48. tataḥ svaratham āsthāya jāmbūnadavibhūṣitam
| saha asmābhiḥ nivavṛte rādheyaḥ dīnamānasaḥ
48. tataḥ,
dīnamānasaḥ rādheyaḥ,
jāmbūnadavibhūṣitam svaratham āsthāya,
asmābhiḥ saha nivavṛte.
48. Then, having mounted his own chariot, which was adorned with gold, the son of Rādhā (Karṇa), with a dejected mind, returned along with us.
ततः शीघ्रतरं प्रायात्केशवः सहसात्यकिः ।
पुनरुच्चारयन्वाणीं याहि याहीति सारथिम् ॥४९॥
49. tataḥ śīghrataraṁ prāyātkeśavaḥ sahasātyakiḥ ,
punaruccārayanvāṇīṁ yāhi yāhīti sārathim.
49. tataḥ śīghrataram prāyāt keśavaḥ saha sātyakiḥ
| punaḥ uccārayan vāṇīm yāhi yāhi iti sārathim
49. tataḥ,
keśavaḥ sātyakiḥ saha,
punaḥ uccārayan vāṇīm -- "yāhi yāhi" iti -- sārathim śīghrataram prāyāt.
49. Then Keśava, along with Sātyaki, quickly departed, repeatedly uttering the words, "Go, go!" to the charioteer.
