द्रौपद्युवाच ।
अशोच्यं नु कुतस्तस्या यस्या भर्ता युधिष्ठिरः ।
जानन्सर्वाणि दुःखानि किं मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥१॥
1. draupadyuvāca ,
aśocyaṁ nu kutastasyā yasyā bhartā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
jānansarvāṇi duḥkhāni kiṁ māṁ tvaṁ paripṛcchasi.

1. Draupadī said, 'How can she not be an object of sorrow, she whose husband is Yudhiṣṭhira? You know all these sufferings; why do you question me?'
यन्मां दासीप्रवादेन प्रातिकामी तदानयत् ।
सभायां पार्षदो मध्ये तन्मां दहति भारत ॥२॥
2. yanmāṁ dāsīpravādena prātikāmī tadānayat ,
sabhāyāṁ pārṣado madhye tanmāṁ dahati bhārata.
2. yat mām dāsī-pravādena prātīkāmī tadā ānayat
sabhāyām pārṣadaḥ madhye tat mām dahati bhārata
2. O descendant of Bhārata, that incident, when Prātīkāmī brought me there on the pretext of a slave, in the midst of the counselors in the assembly, that still burns me.
पार्थिवस्य सुता नाम का नु जीवेत मादृशी ।
अनुभूय भृशं दुःखमन्यत्र द्रौपदीं प्रभो ॥३॥
3. pārthivasya sutā nāma kā nu jīveta mādṛśī ,
anubhūya bhṛśaṁ duḥkhamanyatra draupadīṁ prabho.

anubhūya bhṛśam duḥkham anyatra draupadīm prabho
3. O Lord, what daughter of a king (a noble lady) like me, could possibly live after having experienced such intense suffering, other than Draupadī herself?
वनवासगतायाश्च सैन्धवेन दुरात्मना ।
परामर्शं द्वितीयं च सोढुमुत्सहते नु का ॥४॥
4. vanavāsagatāyāśca saindhavena durātmanā ,
parāmarśaṁ dvitīyaṁ ca soḍhumutsahate nu kā.
4. vanavāsagatāyāḥ ca saindhavena durātmanā
parāmarśam dvitīyam ca soḍhum utsahate nu kā
4. Who indeed, having been exiled to the forest, would be able to tolerate a second assault by that wicked Saṃdhava?
मत्स्यराज्ञः समक्षं च तस्य धूर्तस्य पश्यतः ।
कीचकेन पदा स्पृष्टा का नु जीवेत मादृशी ॥५॥
5. matsyarājñaḥ samakṣaṁ ca tasya dhūrtasya paśyataḥ ,
kīcakena padā spṛṣṭā kā nu jīveta mādṛśī.
5. matsyarājñaḥ samakṣam ca tasya dhūrtasya paśyataḥ
kīcakena padā spṛṣṭā kā nu jīveta mādṛśī
5. Who like me, having been kicked by Kīcaka with his foot, in the presence of the Matsya king and while that scoundrel himself was looking on, would indeed be able to live?
एवं बहुविधैः क्लेशैः क्लिश्यमानां च भारत ।
न मां जानासि कौन्तेय किं फलं जीवितेन मे ॥६॥
6. evaṁ bahuvidhaiḥ kleśaiḥ kliśyamānāṁ ca bhārata ,
na māṁ jānāsi kaunteya kiṁ phalaṁ jīvitena me.
6. evam bahuvidhaiḥ kleśaiḥ kliśyamānām ca bhārata
na mām jānāsi kaunteya kim phalam jīvitena me
6. O Bhārata, O son of Kuntī, you do not truly know me as I am thus tormented by many sorts of afflictions. What benefit is there in life for me?
योऽयं राज्ञो विराटस्य कीचको नाम भारत ।
सेनानीः पुरुषव्याघ्र स्यालः परमदुर्मतिः ॥७॥
7. yo'yaṁ rājño virāṭasya kīcako nāma bhārata ,
senānīḥ puruṣavyāghra syālaḥ paramadurmatiḥ.
7. yaḥ ayam rājñaḥ virāṭasya kīcakaḥ nāma bhārata
senānīḥ puruṣavyāghra syālaḥ paramadurmatiḥ
7. O Bhārata, O tiger among men, this person named Kīcaka, who is King Virāṭa's army commander and his brother-in-law, is utterly evil-minded.
स मां सैरन्ध्रिवेषेण वसन्तीं राजवेश्मनि ।
नित्यमेवाह दुष्टात्मा भार्या मम भवेति वै ॥८॥
8. sa māṁ sairandhriveṣeṇa vasantīṁ rājaveśmani ,
nityamevāha duṣṭātmā bhāryā mama bhaveti vai.
8. sa mām sairandhriveṣeṇa vasantīm rāgaveśmani
nityam eva āha duṣṭātmā bhāryā mama bhava iti vai
8. That wicked soul, seeing me living in the king's palace in the guise of a female attendant, always said to me, "Be my wife!"
तेनोपमन्त्र्यमाणाया वधार्हेण सपत्नहन् ।
कालेनेव फलं पक्वं हृदयं मे विदीर्यते ॥९॥
9. tenopamantryamāṇāyā vadhārheṇa sapatnahan ,
kāleneva phalaṁ pakvaṁ hṛdayaṁ me vidīryate.
9. tena upamantryamāṇāyāḥ vadhārheṇa sapatnahan
kālena iva phalam pakvam hṛdayam me vidīryate
9. O slayer of enemies, my heart is breaking apart like a ripened fruit by time, due to being solicited by that one who deserves death.
भ्रातरं च विगर्हस्व ज्येष्ठं दुर्द्यूतदेविनम् ।
यस्यास्मि कर्मणा प्राप्ता दुःखमेतदनन्तकम् ॥१०॥
10. bhrātaraṁ ca vigarhasva jyeṣṭhaṁ durdyūtadevinam ,
yasyāsmi karmaṇā prāptā duḥkhametadanantakam.
10. bhrātaram ca vigarhasva jyeṣṭham durdyūtadevinam
yasya asmi karmaṇā prāptā duḥkham etat anantakam
10. And you should censure your eldest brother, the one addicted to disastrous gambling, by whose action (karma) I have received this endless suffering.
को हि राज्यं परित्यज्य सर्वस्वं चात्मना सह ।
प्रव्रज्यायैव दीव्येत विना दुर्द्यूतदेविनम् ॥११॥
11. ko hi rājyaṁ parityajya sarvasvaṁ cātmanā saha ,
pravrajyāyaiva dīvyeta vinā durdyūtadevinam.
11. kaḥ hi rājyam parityajya sarvasvam ca ātmanā saha
pravrajyāya eva dīvyeta vinā durdyūtadevinam
11. Who indeed, after abandoning his kingdom and all his possessions along with himself, would gamble (or stake) for the sake of renunciation (pravrajyā) alone, unless he were a disastrous gambler?
यदि निष्कसहस्रेण यच्चान्यत्सारवद्धनम् ।
सायंप्रातरदेविष्यदपि संवत्सरान्बहून् ॥१२॥
12. yadi niṣkasahasreṇa yaccānyatsāravaddhanam ,
sāyaṁprātaradeviṣyadapi saṁvatsarānbahūn.
12. yadi niṣkasahasreṇa yat ca anyat sāravat dhanam
sāyaṃprātaḥ adevişyat api saṃvatsarān bahūn
12. Even if one were to gamble away a thousand gold coins (niṣka) and other substantial wealth, morning and evening, for many years, (it would still represent an immense fortune).
रुक्मं हिरण्यं वासांसि यानं युग्यमजाविकम् ।
अश्वाश्वतरसंघांश्च न जातु क्षयमावहेत् ॥१३॥
13. rukmaṁ hiraṇyaṁ vāsāṁsi yānaṁ yugyamajāvikam ,
aśvāśvatarasaṁghāṁśca na jātu kṣayamāvahet.
13. rukmam hiraṇyam vāsāṃsi yānam yugyam ajāvikam
aśvāśvatarasaṃghān ca na jātu kṣayam āvahet
13. Gold, riches, garments, conveyances, draught animals, goats and sheep, and herds of horses and mules – such (a vast fortune) would never suffer diminution (kṣaya).
सोऽयं द्यूतप्रवादेन श्रिया प्रत्यवरोपितः ।
तूष्णीमास्ते यथा मूढः स्वानि कर्माणि चिन्तयन् ॥१४॥
14. so'yaṁ dyūtapravādena śriyā pratyavaropitaḥ ,
tūṣṇīmāste yathā mūḍhaḥ svāni karmāṇi cintayan.
14. saḥ ayam dyūtaparvādena śriyā pratyavaropitaḥ
tūṣṇīm āste yathā mūḍhaḥ svāni karmāṇi cintayan
14. He, this very person, having been deprived of his fortune by means of gambling, sits silently like a fool, pondering his own deeds (karma).
दश नागसहस्राणि पद्मिनां हेममालिनाम् ।
यं यान्तमनुयान्तीह सोऽयं द्यूतेन जीवति ॥१५॥
15. daśa nāgasahasrāṇi padmināṁ hemamālinām ,
yaṁ yāntamanuyāntīha so'yaṁ dyūtena jīvati.
15. daśa nāgasahasrāṇi padminām hemamālinām yam
yāntam anuyānti iha saḥ ayam dyūtena jīvati
15. He whom ten thousand elephants, adorned with lotuses and golden garlands, used to follow as he moved about on earth – this very person now subsists by gambling.
तथा शतसहस्राणि नृणाममिततेजसाम् ।
उपासते महाराजमिन्द्रप्रस्थे युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१६॥
16. tathā śatasahasrāṇi nṛṇāmamitatejasām ,
upāsate mahārājamindraprasthe yudhiṣṭhiram.
16. tathā śatasahasrāṇi nṛṇām amitatejasām
upāsate mahārājam indraprasthē yudhiṣṭhiram
16. Similarly, hundreds of thousands of men of immeasurable valor serve the great king Yudhishthira in Indraprastha.
शतं दासीसहस्राणि यस्य नित्यं महानसे ।
पात्रीहस्तं दिवारात्रमतिथीन्भोजयन्त्युत ॥१७॥
17. śataṁ dāsīsahasrāṇi yasya nityaṁ mahānase ,
pātrīhastaṁ divārātramatithīnbhojayantyuta.
17. śatam dāsīsahasrāṇi yasya nityam mahānase
pātrīhastam divārātram atithīn bhojayanti uta
17. And a hundred thousands of maidservants, who constantly serve in his great kitchen, feed guests day and night, holding dishes in their hands.
एष निष्कसहस्राणि प्रदाय ददतां वरः ।
द्यूतजेन ह्यनर्थेन महता समुपावृतः ॥१८॥
18. eṣa niṣkasahasrāṇi pradāya dadatāṁ varaḥ ,
dyūtajena hyanarthena mahatā samupāvṛtaḥ.
18. eṣa niṣkasahasrāṇi pradāya dadatām varaḥ
dyūtajena hi anarthena mahatā samupāvṛtaḥ
18. This one, the best among givers, having given thousands of gold coins, was indeed afflicted by a great misfortune (anartha) born of gambling.
एनं हि स्वरसंपन्ना बहवः सूतमागधाः ।
सायंप्रातरुपातिष्ठन्सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डलाः ॥१९॥
19. enaṁ hi svarasaṁpannā bahavaḥ sūtamāgadhāḥ ,
sāyaṁprātarupātiṣṭhansumṛṣṭamaṇikuṇḍalāḥ.
19. enam hi svarasampannāḥ bahavaḥ sūtamāgadhāḥ
sāyamprātaḥ upātiṣṭhan sumṛṣṭamaṇikuṇḍalāḥ
19. Indeed, many bards and panegyrists, endowed with pleasant voices and adorned with shining jeweled earrings, attended him evening and morning.
सहस्रमृषयो यस्य नित्यमासन्सभासदः ।
तपःश्रुतोपसंपन्नाः सर्वकामैरुपस्थिताः ॥२०॥
20. sahasramṛṣayo yasya nityamāsansabhāsadaḥ ,
tapaḥśrutopasaṁpannāḥ sarvakāmairupasthitāḥ.
20. sahasram ṛṣayaḥ yasya nityam āsan sabhāsadaḥ
tapaḥ śruta upasampannāḥ sarvakāmaiḥ upasthitāḥ
20. A thousand sages, endowed with asceticism (tapas) and scriptural knowledge, were always members of his assembly, and they were provided with all their desires.
अन्धान्वृद्धांस्तथानाथान्सर्वान्राष्ट्रेषु दुर्गतान् ।
बिभर्त्यविमना नित्यमानृशंस्याद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥२१॥
21. andhānvṛddhāṁstathānāthānsarvānrāṣṭreṣu durgatān ,
bibhartyavimanā nityamānṛśaṁsyādyudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
21. andhān vṛddhān tathā anāthān sarvān rāṣṭreṣu durgatān
bibharti avimanāḥ nityam ānṛśaṃsyāt yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
21. Always with an untroubled mind, Yudhishthira constantly supports all the blind, the old, the helpless, and those in distress throughout his kingdoms, out of compassion.
स एष निरयं प्राप्तो मत्स्यस्य परिचारकः ।
सभायां देविता राज्ञः कङ्को ब्रूते युधिष्ठिरः ॥२२॥
22. sa eṣa nirayaṁ prāpto matsyasya paricārakaḥ ,
sabhāyāṁ devitā rājñaḥ kaṅko brūte yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
22. sa eṣa nirayam prāptaḥ matsyasya paricārakaḥ
sabhāyām devitā rājñaḥ kaṅkaḥ brūte yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
22. He, this very Yudhishthira, having reached such a miserable state, is now a servant of King Matsya. In the assembly, he speaks as Kanka, the king's dice-player.
इन्द्रप्रस्थे निवसतः समये यस्य पार्थिवाः ।
आसन्बलिभृतः सर्वे सोऽद्यान्यैर्भृतिमिच्छति ॥२३॥
23. indraprasthe nivasataḥ samaye yasya pārthivāḥ ,
āsanbalibhṛtaḥ sarve so'dyānyairbhṛtimicchati.
23. indraprasthe nivasataḥ samaye yasya pārthivāḥ āsan
balibhṛtaḥ sarve saḥ adya anyaiḥ bhṛtim icchati
23. In the time when he was dwelling in Indraprastha, all kings were his tributaries. Today, that very person desires maintenance from others.
पार्थिवाः पृथिवीपाला यस्यासन्वशवर्तिनः ।
स वशे विवशो राजा परेषामद्य वर्तते ॥२४॥
24. pārthivāḥ pṛthivīpālā yasyāsanvaśavartinaḥ ,
sa vaśe vivaśo rājā pareṣāmadya vartate.
24. pārthivāḥ pṛthivīpālāḥ yasya āsan vaśavartinaḥ
saḥ vaśe vivaśaḥ rājā pareṣām adya vartate
24. Earthly rulers, protectors of the earth, were once subservient to him. Now, that very king, helpless, is under the control of others today.
प्रताप्य पृथिवीं सर्वां रश्मिवानिव तेजसा ।
सोऽयं राज्ञो विराटस्य सभास्तारो युधिष्ठिरः ॥२५॥
25. pratāpya pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ raśmivāniva tejasā ,
so'yaṁ rājño virāṭasya sabhāstāro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
25. pratāpya pṛthivīm sarvām raśmimān iva tejasā saḥ
ayam rājñaḥ virāṭasya sabhāstāraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
25. Having oppressed the entire earth with his power, just like the sun (raśmivān) with its radiance (tejasā), this very Yudhiṣṭhira is now a courtier in the assembly of King Virāṭa.
यमुपासन्त राजानः सभायामृषिभिः सह ।
तमुपासीनमद्यान्यं पश्य पाण्डव पाण्डवम् ॥२६॥
26. yamupāsanta rājānaḥ sabhāyāmṛṣibhiḥ saha ,
tamupāsīnamadyānyaṁ paśya pāṇḍava pāṇḍavam.
26. yam upāsanta rājānaḥ sabhāyām ṛṣibhiḥ saha
tam upāsīnam adya anyam paśya pāṇḍava pāṇḍavam
26. O Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), behold that Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira), whom kings, along with sages, once attended in the assembly, now attending to another person!
अतदर्हं महाप्राज्ञं जीवितार्थेऽभिसंश्रितम् ।
दृष्ट्वा कस्य न दुःखं स्याद्धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥२७॥
27. atadarhaṁ mahāprājñaṁ jīvitārthe'bhisaṁśritam ,
dṛṣṭvā kasya na duḥkhaṁ syāddharmātmānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.
27. atadarham mahāprājñam jīvitārthe abhisaṃśritam dṛṣṭvā
kasya na duḥkham syāt dharmātmānam yudhiṣṭhiram
27. Seeing Yudhiṣṭhira, the greatly wise one, who is undeserving of such a state, resorting to this for mere survival, and whose very being (ātman) is righteousness (dharma) - whose heart would not be filled with sorrow?
उपास्ते स्म सभायां यं कृत्स्ना वीर वसुंधरा ।
तमुपासीनमद्यान्यं पश्य भारत भारतम् ॥२८॥
28. upāste sma sabhāyāṁ yaṁ kṛtsnā vīra vasuṁdharā ,
tamupāsīnamadyānyaṁ paśya bhārata bhāratam.
28. upāste sma sabhāyām yam kṛtsnā vīra vasundharā
tam upāsīnam adya anyam paśya bhārata bhāratam
28. O hero, descendant of Bharata! Behold today that descendant of Bharata whom the entire earth (vasundharā) once served in the assembly, now serving another!
एवं बहुविधैर्दुःखैः पीड्यमानामनाथवत् ।
शोकसागरमध्यस्थां किं मां भीम न पश्यसि ॥२९॥
29. evaṁ bahuvidhairduḥkhaiḥ pīḍyamānāmanāthavat ,
śokasāgaramadhyasthāṁ kiṁ māṁ bhīma na paśyasi.
29. evam bahuvidhaiḥ duḥkhaiḥ pīḍyamānām anāthavat
śoka-sāgara-madhya-sthām kim mām bhīma na paśyasi
29. O Bhima, why do you not see me, thus tormented by manifold sorrows like an orphan, and situated in the midst of an ocean of grief?
