जनमेजय उवाच ।
उत्तङ्काय वरं दत्त्वा गोविन्दो द्विजसत्तम ।
अत ऊर्ध्वं महाबाहुः किं चकार महायशाः ॥१॥

1. Janamejaya said: 'O best of brahmins, what did Govinda, the mighty-armed and greatly glorious one, do after giving a boon to Uttaṅka?'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
दत्त्वा वरमुत्तङ्काय प्रायात्सात्यकिना सह ।
द्वारकामेव गोविन्दः शीघ्रवेगैर्महाहयैः ॥२॥
2. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
dattvā varamuttaṅkāya prāyātsātyakinā saha ,
dvārakāmeva govindaḥ śīghravegairmahāhayaiḥ.

2. Vaiśampāyana said: 'Having granted a boon to Uttaṅka, Govinda departed for Dvārakā with Sātyaki, accompanied by swift-paced, great horses.'
सरांसि च नदीश्चैव वनानि विविधानि च ।
अतिक्रम्य ससादाथ रम्यां द्वारवतीं पुरीम् ॥३॥
3. sarāṁsi ca nadīścaiva vanāni vividhāni ca ,
atikramya sasādātha ramyāṁ dvāravatīṁ purīm.

3. Having crossed lakes, rivers, and various forests, he then reached the beautiful city of Dvāravatī.
वर्तमाने महाराज महे रैवतकस्य च ।
उपायात्पुण्डरीकाक्षो युयुधानानुगस्तदा ॥४॥
4. vartamāne mahārāja mahe raivatakasya ca ,
upāyātpuṇḍarīkākṣo yuyudhānānugastadā.

4. While the great festival (mahotsava) of Raivataka was taking place, O great king, the lotus-eyed one (Kṛṣṇa), followed by Yuyudhāna, then arrived.
अलंकृतस्तु स गिरिर्नानारूपविचित्रितैः ।
बभौ रुक्ममयैः काशैः सर्वतः पुरुषर्षभ ॥५॥
5. alaṁkṛtastu sa girirnānārūpavicitritaiḥ ,
babhau rukmamayaiḥ kāśaiḥ sarvataḥ puruṣarṣabha.
5. alaṅkṛtaḥ tu saḥ giriḥ nānārūpavicitraiḥ babhau
rukmamayaiḥ kāśaiḥ sarvataḥ puruṣarṣabha
5. puruṣarṣabha,
saḥ giriḥ tu nānārūpavicitraiḥ alaṅkṛtaḥ rukmamayaiḥ kāśaiḥ sarvataḥ babhau
5. That mountain, however, O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), adorned with various splendid forms and shining everywhere with golden kāśa grass, looked magnificent.
काञ्चनस्रग्भिरग्र्याभिः सुमनोभिस्तथैव च ।
वासोभिश्च महाशैलः कल्पवृक्षैश्च सर्वशः ॥६॥
6. kāñcanasragbhiragryābhiḥ sumanobhistathaiva ca ,
vāsobhiśca mahāśailaḥ kalpavṛkṣaiśca sarvaśaḥ.
6. kāñcanasragbhiḥ agryābhiḥ sumanobhiḥ tathā eva ca
vāsobhiḥ ca mahāśailaḥ kalpavṛkṣaiḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
6. mahāśailaḥ kāñcanasragbhiḥ agryābhiḥ tathā eva ca
sumanobhiḥ ca vāsobhiḥ ca kalpavṛkṣaiḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
6. The great mountain (mahāśaila) was, moreover, everywhere (adorned) with excellent golden garlands, and with beautiful flowers, and with garments, and with wish-fulfilling trees (kalpavṛkṣa).
दीपवृक्षैश्च सौवर्णैरभीक्ष्णमुपशोभितः ।
गुहानिर्झरदेशेषु दिवाभूतो बभूव ह ॥७॥
7. dīpavṛkṣaiśca sauvarṇairabhīkṣṇamupaśobhitaḥ ,
guhānirjharadeśeṣu divābhūto babhūva ha.
7. dīpavṛkṣaiḥ ca sauvarṇaiḥ abhīkṣṇam upaśobhitaḥ
guhānirjharadeśeṣu divābhūtaḥ babhūva ha
7. Constantly adorned with golden lamp-trees, it (the mountain) appeared as if it were daylight in its regions of caves and waterfalls.
पताकाभिर्विचित्राभिः सघण्टाभिः समन्ततः ।
पुंभिः स्त्रीभिश्च संघुष्टः प्रगीत इव चाभवत् ।
अतीव प्रेक्षणीयोऽभून्मेरुर्मुनिगणैरिव ॥८॥
8. patākābhirvicitrābhiḥ saghaṇṭābhiḥ samantataḥ ,
puṁbhiḥ strībhiśca saṁghuṣṭaḥ pragīta iva cābhavat ,
atīva prekṣaṇīyo'bhūnmerurmunigaṇairiva.
8. patākābhiḥ vicitrābhiḥ saghaṇṭābhiḥ
samantataḥ puṃbhiḥ strībhiḥ ca saṃghuṣṭaḥ
pragītaḥ iva ca abhavat atīva
prekṣaṇīyaḥ abhūt meruḥ munigaṇaiḥ iva
8. Adorned on all sides with various, colorful banners and bells, it (the mountain) resounded with the voices of men and women, as if being sung itself. Mount Meru became exceedingly beautiful to behold, just like (a mountain graced by) multitudes of sages (muni).
मत्तानां हृष्टरूपाणां स्त्रीणां पुंसां च भारत ।
गायतां पर्वतेन्द्रस्य दिवस्पृगिव निस्वनः ॥९॥
9. mattānāṁ hṛṣṭarūpāṇāṁ strīṇāṁ puṁsāṁ ca bhārata ,
gāyatāṁ parvatendrasya divaspṛgiva nisvanaḥ.
9. mattānām hṛṣṭarūpāṇām strīṇām puṃsām ca bhārata
gāyatām parvatendrasya divaspṛk iva nisvanaḥ
9. O Bhārata, the joyous sounds of intoxicated men and women singing were like the sky-reaching roar of the king of mountains.
प्रमत्तमत्तसंमत्तक्ष्वेडितोत्कृष्टसंकुला ।
तथा किलकिलाशब्दैर्भूरभूत्सुमनोहरा ॥१०॥
10. pramattamattasaṁmattakṣveḍitotkṛṣṭasaṁkulā ,
tathā kilakilāśabdairbhūrabhūtsumanoharā.
10. pramattamattasaṃmattakṣveḍitotkṛṣṭasaṅkulā
tathā kilakilāśabdaiḥ bhūḥ abhūt sumanoharā
10. The place became very charming, filled with the cries, loud shouts, and joyful noises of the extremely intoxicated, maddened, and utterly intoxicated (people).
विपणापणवान्रम्यो भक्ष्यभोज्यविहारवान् ।
वस्त्रमाल्योत्करयुतो वीणावेणुमृदङ्गवान् ॥११॥
11. vipaṇāpaṇavānramyo bhakṣyabhojyavihāravān ,
vastramālyotkarayuto vīṇāveṇumṛdaṅgavān.
11. vipaṇāpaṇavān ramyaḥ bhakṣyabhojyavihāravān
vastramālyotkarayutaḥ vīṇāveṇumṛdaṅgavān
11. ramyaḥ vipaṇāpaṇavān bhakṣyabhojyavihāravān
vastramālyotkarayutaḥ vīṇāveṇumṛdaṅgavān
11. It was charming, bustling with markets and shops, and filled with places for various foods and entertainment. It abounded in clothes and garlands, and resounded with the sounds of lutes, flutes, and drums.
सुरामैरेयमिश्रेण भक्ष्यभोज्येन चैव ह ।
दीनान्धकृपणादिभ्यो दीयमानेन चानिशम् ।
बभौ परमकल्याणो महस्तस्य महागिरेः ॥१२॥
12. surāmaireyamiśreṇa bhakṣyabhojyena caiva ha ,
dīnāndhakṛpaṇādibhyo dīyamānena cāniśam ,
babhau paramakalyāṇo mahastasya mahāgireḥ.

ca eva ha dīnāndhakṛpaṇādibhyaḥ
dīyamānena ca aniśam babhau
paramakalyāṇaḥ mahaḥ tasya mahāgireḥ

surāmaireyamiśreṇa bhakṣyabhojyena
dīnāndhakṛpaṇādibhyaḥ ca
aniśam dīyamānena eva ha babhau
12. Its great splendor (mahas) shone with supreme auspiciousness, as sura and maireya liquors, along with various foods, were constantly given to the poor, blind, and other needy people.
पुण्यावसथवान्वीर पुण्यकृद्भिर्निषेवितः ।
विहारो वृष्णिवीराणां महे रैवतकस्य ह ।
स नगो वेश्मसंकीर्णो देवलोक इवाबभौ ॥१३॥
13. puṇyāvasathavānvīra puṇyakṛdbhirniṣevitaḥ ,
vihāro vṛṣṇivīrāṇāṁ mahe raivatakasya ha ,
sa nago veśmasaṁkīrṇo devaloka ivābabhau.
13. puṇyāvasathavān vīra puṇyakṛdbhiḥ
niṣevitaḥ vihāraḥ vṛṣṇivīrāṇām
mahe raivatakasya ha saḥ nagaḥ
veśmasaṅkīrṇaḥ devalokaḥ iva babhau
13. vīra puṇyāvasathavān puṇyakṛdbhiḥ
niṣevitaḥ vṛṣṇivīrāṇām raivatakasya
mahe ha vihāraḥ saḥ nagaḥ
veśmasaṅkīrṇaḥ devalokaḥ iva babhau
13. O hero, it possessed sacred dwellings and was frequented by those who performed meritorious deeds. It was a pleasure ground for the Vṛṣṇi heroes, especially during the great festival (mahas) of Raivataka. That mountain, crowded with houses, truly shone like the world of gods (devaloka).
तदा च कृष्णसांनिध्यमासाद्य भरतर्षभ ।
शक्रसद्मप्रतीकाशो बभूव स हि शैलराट् ॥१४॥
14. tadā ca kṛṣṇasāṁnidhyamāsādya bharatarṣabha ,
śakrasadmapratīkāśo babhūva sa hi śailarāṭ.
14. tadā ca kṛṣṇasāṃnidhyam āsādya bharatarṣabha
śakrasadmapratīkāśaḥ babhūva saḥ hi śailarāṭ
14. bharatarṣabha tadā ca kṛṣṇasāṃnidhyam āsādya
saḥ śailarāṭ hi śakrasadmapratīkāśaḥ babhūva
14. Then, having obtained the presence of (Kṛṣṇa), O best of the Bhāratas, that king of mountains (śailarāṭ) indeed became like Indra's abode.
ततः संपूज्यमानः स विवेश भवनं शुभम् ।
गोविन्दः सात्यकिश्चैव जगाम भवनं स्वकम् ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ saṁpūjyamānaḥ sa viveśa bhavanaṁ śubham ,
govindaḥ sātyakiścaiva jagāma bhavanaṁ svakam.
15. tataḥ sampūjyamānaḥ sa viveśa bhavanam śubham
govindaḥ sātyakiḥ ca eva jagāma bhavanam svakam
15. tataḥ sa sampūjyamānaḥ śubham bhavanam viveśa
govindaḥ ca sātyakiḥ eva svakam bhavanam jagāma
15. Then, being honored, he entered an auspicious dwelling. Govinda and Satyaki also went to their own homes.
विवेश च स हृष्टात्मा चिरकालप्रवासकः ।
कृत्वा नसुकरं कर्म दानवेष्विव वासवः ॥१६॥
16. viveśa ca sa hṛṣṭātmā cirakālapravāsakaḥ ,
kṛtvā nasukaraṁ karma dānaveṣviva vāsavaḥ.
16. viveśa ca sa hṛṣṭa-ātmā cira-kāla-pravāsakaḥ
kṛtvā na sukaram karma dānaveṣu iva vāsavaḥ
16. ca sa hṛṣṭa-ātmā cira-kāla-pravāsakaḥ dānaveṣu
iva vāsavaḥ na sukaram karma kṛtvā viveśa
16. And he, joyful in spirit, who had been absent for a long time, entered, having accomplished a difficult deed (karma), like Indra among the Danavas.
उपयातं तु वार्ष्णेयं भोजवृष्ण्यन्धकास्तदा ।
अभ्यगच्छन्महात्मानं देवा इव शतक्रतुम् ॥१७॥
17. upayātaṁ tu vārṣṇeyaṁ bhojavṛṣṇyandhakāstadā ,
abhyagacchanmahātmānaṁ devā iva śatakratum.
17. upayātam tu vārṣṇeyam bhoja-vṛṣṇi-andhakāḥ tadā
abhyagacchan mahā-ātmānam devāḥ iva śatakratum
17. tadā tu bhoja-vṛṣṇi-andhakāḥ upayātam mahā-ātmānam
vārṣṇeyam devāḥ iva śatakratum abhyagacchan
17. Then, the Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis, and Andhakas approached the great-souled one (mahā-ātman), Vārṣṇeya, who had arrived, just as the gods approach Śatakratu (Indra).
स तानभ्यर्च्य मेधावी पृष्ट्वा च कुशलं तदा ।
अभ्यवादयत प्रीतः पितरं मातरं तथा ॥१८॥
18. sa tānabhyarcya medhāvī pṛṣṭvā ca kuśalaṁ tadā ,
abhyavādayata prītaḥ pitaraṁ mātaraṁ tathā.
18. sa tān abhyarcya medhāvī pṛṣṭvā ca kuśalam tadā
abhyavādayata prītaḥ pitaram mātaram tathā
18. tadā sa medhāvī tān abhyarcya ca kuśalam pṛṣṭvā
prītaḥ pitaram mātaram tathā abhyavādayata
18. Then, that sagacious one, having honored them and inquired about their well-being, joyfully saluted his father and also his mother.
ताभ्यां च संपरिष्वक्तः सान्त्वितश्च महाभुजः ।
उपोपविष्टस्तैः सर्वैर्वृष्णिभिः परिवारितः ॥१९॥
19. tābhyāṁ ca saṁpariṣvaktaḥ sāntvitaśca mahābhujaḥ ,
upopaviṣṭastaiḥ sarvairvṛṣṇibhiḥ parivāritaḥ.
19. tābhyām ca sampariṣvaktaḥ sāntvitaḥ ca mahābhujaḥ
upopaviṣṭaḥ taiḥ sarvaiḥ vṛṣṇibhiḥ parivāritaḥ
19. O mighty-armed one, embraced and comforted by those two, he sat down, surrounded by all the Vrishnis.
स विश्रान्तो महातेजाः कृतपादावसेचनः ।
कथयामास तं कृष्णः पृष्टः पित्रा महाहवम् ॥२०॥
20. sa viśrānto mahātejāḥ kṛtapādāvasecanaḥ ,
kathayāmāsa taṁ kṛṣṇaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ pitrā mahāhavam.
20. saḥ viśrāntaḥ mahātejāḥ kṛtapādāvasecanaḥ
kathayāmāsa tam kṛṣṇaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ pitrā mahāhavam
20. Having rested and had his feet washed, the greatly energetic Krishna, when asked by his father, narrated the great battle.
