जनमेजय उवाच ।
यत्तत्तदा महाब्रह्मँल्लोमशो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
इन्द्रस्य वचनादेत्य पाण्डुपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
yattattadā mahābrahmaँllomaśo vākyamabravīt ,
indrasya vacanādetya pāṇḍuputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.

1. Janamejaya said: O great Brahmin, what words did Lomasha then speak, having come by the command of Indra, to Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Pandu?
यच्चापि ते भयं तीव्रं न च कीर्तयसे क्वचित् ।
तच्चाप्यपहरिष्यामि सव्यसाचाविहागते ॥२॥
2. yaccāpi te bhayaṁ tīvraṁ na ca kīrtayase kvacit ,
taccāpyapahariṣyāmi savyasācāvihāgate.
2. yat ca api te bhayam tīvram na ca kīrtayase kvacit
tat ca api apahariṣyāmi savyasācau iha āgate
2. Whatever intense fear you have, which you do not mention anywhere, I will also dispel that when Savyasacin (Arjuna) arrives here.
किं नु तद्विदुषां श्रेष्ठ कर्णं प्रति महद्भयम् ।
आसीन्न च स धर्मात्मा कथयामास कस्यचित् ॥३॥
3. kiṁ nu tadviduṣāṁ śreṣṭha karṇaṁ prati mahadbhayam ,
āsīnna ca sa dharmātmā kathayāmāsa kasyacit.
3. kim nu tat viduṣām śreṣṭha karṇam prati mahat bhayam
āsīt na ca saḥ dharmātmā kathayām āsa kasyacit
3. O best among the learned, what indeed was that great fear regarding Karna? And that righteous soul (dharma) did not speak of it to anyone.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अहं ते राजशार्दूल कथयामि कथामिमाम् ।
पृच्छते भरतश्रेष्ठ शुश्रूषस्व गिरं मम ॥४॥
4. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ahaṁ te rājaśārdūla kathayāmi kathāmimām ,
pṛcchate bharataśreṣṭha śuśrūṣasva giraṁ mama.
4. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca aham te rājaśārdūla kathayāmi kathām
imām pṛcchate bharataśreṣṭha śuśrūṣasva giram mama
4. Vaiśampāyana said: 'O tiger among kings, O best of the Bhāratas, I will narrate this story to you, who are asking. Please listen to my words.'
द्वादशे समतिक्रान्ते वर्षे प्राप्ते त्रयोदशे ।
पाण्डूनां हितकृच्छक्रः कर्णं भिक्षितुमुद्यतः ॥५॥
5. dvādaśe samatikrānte varṣe prāpte trayodaśe ,
pāṇḍūnāṁ hitakṛcchakraḥ karṇaṁ bhikṣitumudyataḥ.

pāṇḍūnām hitakṛt śakraḥ karṇam bhikṣitum udyataḥ
5. After the twelfth year had passed and the thirteenth year had arrived, Indra, the benefactor of the Pāṇḍavas, prepared to beg from Karna.
अभिप्रायमथो ज्ञात्वा महेन्द्रस्य विभावसुः ।
कुण्डलार्थे महाराज सूर्यः कर्णमुपागमत् ॥६॥
6. abhiprāyamatho jñātvā mahendrasya vibhāvasuḥ ,
kuṇḍalārthe mahārāja sūryaḥ karṇamupāgamat.
6. abhiprāyam atho jñātvā mahendrasya vibhāvasuḥ
kuṇḍalārthe mahārāja sūryaḥ karṇam upāgamat
6. Then, O great king, Vibhāvasu (the sun god), having understood the intention of Mahendra (Indra), approached Karṇa for the sake of his earrings.
महार्हे शयने वीरं स्पर्ध्यास्तरणसंवृते ।
शयानमभिविश्वस्तं ब्रह्मण्यं सत्यवादिनम् ॥७॥
7. mahārhe śayane vīraṁ spardhyāstaraṇasaṁvṛte ,
śayānamabhiviśvastaṁ brahmaṇyaṁ satyavādinam.
7. mahārhe śayane vīram spardhyāstaraṇasaṃvṛte
śayānam abhiviśvastam brahmaṇyam satyavādinam
7. He approached the hero (Karṇa) as he lay on a costly bed covered with magnificent spreads, completely trusting, devoted to Brahmins, and truthful.
स्वप्नान्ते निशि राजेन्द्र दर्शयामास रश्मिवान् ।
कृपया परयाविष्टः पुत्रस्नेहाच्च भारत ॥८॥
8. svapnānte niśi rājendra darśayāmāsa raśmivān ,
kṛpayā parayāviṣṭaḥ putrasnehācca bhārata.
8. svapnānte niśi rājendra darśayāmāsa raśmivān
kṛpayā parayā āviṣṭaḥ putrasnehāt ca bhārata
8. At the end of the dream, during the night, O King of kings, the radiant (Sun god) appeared, overcome by immense compassion and affection for his son (Karṇa), O Bhārata.
ब्राह्मणो वेदविद्भूत्वा सूर्यो योगाद्धि रूपवान् ।
हितार्थमब्रवीत्कर्णं सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः ॥९॥
9. brāhmaṇo vedavidbhūtvā sūryo yogāddhi rūpavān ,
hitārthamabravītkarṇaṁ sāntvapūrvamidaṁ vacaḥ.
9. brāhmaṇaḥ vedavit bhūtvā sūryaḥ yogāt hi rūpavān
hitārtham abravīt karṇam sāntvapūrvam idam vacaḥ
9. The Sun god (Sūrya), having indeed assumed the form of a Brahmin and a knower of the Vedas through his mystic power (yoga), spoke these words of comfort to Karṇa for his benefit.
कर्ण मद्वचनं तात शृणु सत्यभृतां वर ।
ब्रुवतोऽद्य महाबाहो सौहृदात्परमं हितम् ॥१०॥
10. karṇa madvacanaṁ tāta śṛṇu satyabhṛtāṁ vara ,
bruvato'dya mahābāho sauhṛdātparamaṁ hitam.
10. karṇa mat-vacanam tāta śṛṇu satyabhṛtām vara
bruvataḥ adya mahābāho sauhṛdāt paramam hitam
10. O Karṇa, my dear one, O best among truth-speakers, O mighty-armed one, listen to my words today, which I speak out of friendship for your supreme benefit.
उपायास्यति शक्रस्त्वां पाण्डवानां हितेप्सया ।
ब्राह्मणच्छद्मना कर्ण कुण्डलापजिहीर्षया ॥११॥
11. upāyāsyati śakrastvāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ hitepsayā ,
brāhmaṇacchadmanā karṇa kuṇḍalāpajihīrṣayā.
11. upāyāsyati śakraḥ tvām pāṇḍavānām hitepsayā
brāhmaṇacchadmanā karṇa kuṇḍalāpajihīrṣayā
11. O Karṇa, Indra (Śakra) will approach you, disguised as a brahmin, with the desire to take away your earrings, for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas' welfare.
विदितं तेन शीलं ते सर्वस्य जगतस्तथा ।
यथा त्वं भिक्षितः सद्भिर्ददास्येव न याचसे ॥१२॥
12. viditaṁ tena śīlaṁ te sarvasya jagatastathā ,
yathā tvaṁ bhikṣitaḥ sadbhirdadāsyeva na yācase.
12. viditam tena śīlam te sarvasya jagataḥ tathā
yathā tvam bhikṣitaḥ sadbhiḥ dadāsi eva na yācase
12. Your character (śīla) is known by him (Indra), and similarly by everyone in the world: that you always give when petitioned by the virtuous, and you never beg.
त्वं हि तात ददास्येव ब्राह्मणेभ्यः प्रयाचितः ।
वित्तं यच्चान्यदप्याहुर्न प्रत्याख्यासि कर्हिचित् ॥१३॥
13. tvaṁ hi tāta dadāsyeva brāhmaṇebhyaḥ prayācitaḥ ,
vittaṁ yaccānyadapyāhurna pratyākhyāsi karhicit.
13. tvam hi tāta dadāsi eva brāhmaṇebhyaḥ prayācitaḥ
vittam yat ca anyat api āhuḥ na pratyākhyāsi karhicit
13. Indeed, my dear one, you certainly give wealth (vitta) to Brahmins who petition you, and you never refuse anything else they ask for.
तं त्वामेवंविधं ज्ञात्वा स्वयं वै पाकशासनः ।
आगन्ता कुण्डलार्थाय कवचं चैव भिक्षितुम् ॥१४॥
14. taṁ tvāmevaṁvidhaṁ jñātvā svayaṁ vai pākaśāsanaḥ ,
āgantā kuṇḍalārthāya kavacaṁ caiva bhikṣitum.
14. tam tvām evamvidham jñātvā svayam vai pākaśāsanaḥ
āgantā kuṇḍalārthāya kavacam ca eva bhikṣitum
14. Indra (Pākaśāsana), having himself known you to be of such a generous nature, will indeed come to beg for your earrings and armor.
तस्मै प्रयाचमानाय न देये कुण्डले त्वया ।
अनुनेयः परं शक्त्या श्रेय एतद्धि ते परम् ॥१५॥
15. tasmai prayācamānāya na deye kuṇḍale tvayā ,
anuneyaḥ paraṁ śaktyā śreya etaddhi te param.
15. tasmai prayācamānāya na deye kuṇḍale tvayā
anuneyaḥ param śaktyā śreyaḥ etat hi te param
15. You should not give those two earrings to him who is begging. He should be appeased with your utmost power (śakti), for this is indeed your supreme welfare.
कुण्डलार्थे ब्रुवंस्तात कारणैर्बहुभिस्त्वया ।
अन्यैर्बहुविधैर्वित्तैः स निवार्यः पुनः पुनः ॥१६॥
16. kuṇḍalārthe bruvaṁstāta kāraṇairbahubhistvayā ,
anyairbahuvidhairvittaiḥ sa nivāryaḥ punaḥ punaḥ.
16. kuṇḍalārthe bruvan tāta kāraṇaiḥ bahubhiḥ tvayā
anyaiḥ bahuvidhaiḥ vittaiḥ saḥ nivāryaḥ punaḥ punaḥ
16. My dear one (tāta), when he pleads for the earrings, you should repeatedly dissuade him with many arguments and with various other kinds of riches.
रत्नैः स्त्रीभिस्तथा भोगैर्धनैर्बहुविधैरपि ।
निदर्शनैश्च बहुभिः कुण्डलेप्सुः पुरंदरः ॥१७॥
17. ratnaiḥ strībhistathā bhogairdhanairbahuvidhairapi ,
nidarśanaiśca bahubhiḥ kuṇḍalepsuḥ puraṁdaraḥ.
17. ratnaiḥ strībhiḥ tathā bhogaiḥ dhanaiḥ bahuvidhaiḥ
api nidarśanaiḥ ca bahubhiḥ kuṇḍalepsuḥ purandaraḥ
17. Indra (Purandara), desiring the earrings, should be [dissuaded] with gems, with women, and also with various kinds of enjoyments and wealth, as well as with many examples.
यदि दास्यसि कर्ण त्वं सहजे कुण्डले शुभे ।
आयुषः प्रक्षयं गत्वा मृत्योर्वशमुपेष्यसि ॥१८॥
18. yadi dāsyasi karṇa tvaṁ sahaje kuṇḍale śubhe ,
āyuṣaḥ prakṣayaṁ gatvā mṛtyorvaśamupeṣyasi.
18. yadi dāsyasi karṇa tvam sahaje kuṇḍale śubhe
āyuṣaḥ prakṣayam gatvā mṛtyoḥ vaśam upeṣyasi
18. O Karṇa, if you give away your auspicious, inborn earrings, you will hasten the decline of your life and fall under the sway of death.
कवचेन च संयुक्तः कुण्डलाभ्यां च मानद ।
अवध्यस्त्वं रणेऽरीणामिति विद्धि वचो मम ॥१९॥
19. kavacena ca saṁyuktaḥ kuṇḍalābhyāṁ ca mānada ,
avadhyastvaṁ raṇe'rīṇāmiti viddhi vaco mama.
19. kavacena ca saṃyuktaḥ kuṇḍalābhyām ca mānada
avadhyaḥ tvam raṇe arīṇām iti viddhi vacaḥ mama
19. O giver of honor, endowed with your armor and these two earrings, you are invincible to your enemies in battle. Know this to be my word.
अमृतादुत्थितं ह्येतदुभयं रत्नसंभवम् ।
तस्माद्रक्ष्यं त्वया कर्ण जीवितं चेत्प्रियं तव ॥२०॥
20. amṛtādutthitaṁ hyetadubhayaṁ ratnasaṁbhavam ,
tasmādrakṣyaṁ tvayā karṇa jīvitaṁ cetpriyaṁ tava.
20. amṛtāt utthitam hi etat ubhayam ratnasaṃbhavam
tasmāt rakṣyam tvayā karṇa jīvitam cet priyam tava
20. Indeed, both of these (your armor and earrings) originated from nectar and are born of jewels. Therefore, O Karṇa, you must protect your life if it is dear to you.
कर्ण उवाच ।
को मामेवं भवान्प्राह दर्शयन्सौहृदं परम् ।
कामया भगवन्ब्रूहि को भवान्द्विजवेषधृक् ॥२१॥
21. karṇa uvāca ,
ko māmevaṁ bhavānprāha darśayansauhṛdaṁ param ,
kāmayā bhagavanbrūhi ko bhavāndvijaveṣadhṛk.
21. karṇa uvāca kaḥ mām evam bhavān prāha darśayan sauhṛdam
param kāmayā bhagavan brūhi kaḥ bhavān dvijaveṣadhṛk
21. Karṇa said: 'Who are you, sir, who thus speak to me, showing such great friendship? O reverend one, please tell me, who are you, disguised in the garb of a brahmin (dvija)?'
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
अहं तात सहस्रांशुः सौहृदात्त्वां निदर्शये ।
कुरुष्वैतद्वचो मे त्वमेतच्छ्रेयः परं हि ते ॥२२॥
22. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
ahaṁ tāta sahasrāṁśuḥ sauhṛdāttvāṁ nidarśaye ,
kuruṣvaitadvaco me tvametacchreyaḥ paraṁ hi te.
22. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca aham tāta sahasrāṃśuḥ sauhṛdāt tvām
nidarśaye kuruṣva etat vacaḥ me tvam etat śreyaḥ param hi te
22. The Brahmin said: "Dear son, I am Sahasrāmśu (the Sun), and I am instructing you out of goodwill. Please follow this advice of mine, for it is indeed the supreme good for you."
कर्ण उवाच ।
श्रेय एव ममात्यन्तं यस्य मे गोपतिः प्रभुः ।
प्रवक्ताद्य हितान्वेषी शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥२३॥
23. karṇa uvāca ,
śreya eva mamātyantaṁ yasya me gopatiḥ prabhuḥ ,
pravaktādya hitānveṣī śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco mama.
23. karṇaḥ uvāca śreyaḥ eva mama atyantam yasya me gopatiḥ
prabhuḥ pravaktā adya hita anveṣī śṛṇu ca idam vacaḥ mama
23. Karna said: "It is indeed a great good for me, for whom Gopati (the Sun) is the lord and is now a well-wishing instructor. Listen now to these words of mine!"
प्रसादये त्वां वरदं प्रणयाच्च ब्रवीम्यहम् ।
न निवार्यो व्रतादस्मादहं यद्यस्मि ते प्रियः ॥२४॥
24. prasādaye tvāṁ varadaṁ praṇayācca bravīmyaham ,
na nivāryo vratādasmādahaṁ yadyasmi te priyaḥ.
24. prasādaye tvām varadam praṇayāt ca bravīmi aham
na nivāryaḥ vratāt asmāt aham yadi asmi te priyaḥ
24. I supplicate you, the bestower of boons, and I speak out of deep affection. If I am dear to you, I must not be dissuaded from this vow (vrata).
व्रतं वै मम लोकोऽयं वेत्ति कृत्स्नो विभावसो ।
यथाहं द्विजमुख्येभ्यो दद्यां प्राणानपि ध्रुवम् ॥२५॥
25. vrataṁ vai mama loko'yaṁ vetti kṛtsno vibhāvaso ,
yathāhaṁ dvijamukhyebhyo dadyāṁ prāṇānapi dhruvam.
25. vratam vai mama lokaḥ ayam vetti kṛtsnaḥ vibhāvaso
yathā aham dvijamukhyebhyaḥ dadyām prāṇān api dhruvam
25. O glorious one (Vibhāvasu)! This entire world indeed knows my vow (vrata): that I would certainly give even my life (prāṇa) to the most prominent Brahmins.
यद्यागच्छति शक्रो मां ब्राह्मणच्छद्मनावृतः ।
हितार्थं पाण्डुपुत्राणां खेचरोत्तम भिक्षितुम् ॥२६॥
26. yadyāgacchati śakro māṁ brāhmaṇacchadmanāvṛtaḥ ,
hitārthaṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ khecarottama bhikṣitum.
26. yadi āgacchati śakraḥ mām brāhmaṇacchadmanā āvṛtaḥ
hitārtham pāṇḍuputrāṇām khecarottama bhikṣitum
26. O best among sky-dwellers, if Indra comes to me, disguised as a brahmin, to beg for the welfare of the sons of Pāṇḍu...
दास्यामि विबुधश्रेष्ठ कुण्डले वर्म चोत्तमम् ।
न मे कीर्तिः प्रणश्येत त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुता ॥२७॥
27. dāsyāmi vibudhaśreṣṭha kuṇḍale varma cottamam ,
na me kīrtiḥ praṇaśyeta triṣu lokeṣu viśrutā.
27. dāsyāmi vibudhaśreṣṭha kuṇḍale varma ca uttamam
na me kīrtiḥ praṇaśyeta triṣu lokeṣu viśrutā
27. O best among the wise, I will give the two earrings and the excellent armor. My fame, which is well-known throughout the three worlds, must not perish.
मद्विधस्यायशस्यं हि न युक्तं प्राणरक्षणम् ।
युक्तं हि यशसा युक्तं मरणं लोकसंमतम् ॥२८॥
28. madvidhasyāyaśasyaṁ hi na yuktaṁ prāṇarakṣaṇam ,
yuktaṁ hi yaśasā yuktaṁ maraṇaṁ lokasaṁmatam.
28. madvidhasya ayaśasyam hi na yuktam prāṇarakṣaṇam
yuktam hi yaśasā yuktam maraṇam lokasaṃmatam
28. For a person like me, it is truly not proper to preserve life if it brings dishonor. Indeed, a death accompanied by fame, which is approved by the people, is befitting.
सोऽहमिन्द्राय दास्यामि कुण्डले सह वर्मणा ।
यदि मां बलवृत्रघ्नो भिक्षार्थमुपयास्यति ॥२९॥
29. so'hamindrāya dāsyāmi kuṇḍale saha varmaṇā ,
yadi māṁ balavṛtraghno bhikṣārthamupayāsyati.
29. saḥ aham indrāya dāsyāmi kuṇḍale saha varmaṇā
yadi mām balavṛtraghnaḥ bhikṣārtham upayāsyati
29. Therefore, I will give those two earrings along with the armor to Indra, if the slayer of Bala and Vṛtra approaches me for alms.
हितार्थं पाण्डुपुत्राणां कुण्डले मे प्रयाचितुम् ।
तन्मे कीर्तिकरं लोके तस्याकीर्तिर्भविष्यति ॥३०॥
30. hitārthaṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ kuṇḍale me prayācitum ,
tanme kīrtikaraṁ loke tasyākīrtirbhaviṣyati.
30. hitārtham pāṇḍuputrāṇām kuṇḍale me prayācitum |
tat me kīrtikaram loke tasya akīrtiḥ bhaviṣyati
30. The act of begging my earrings for the welfare of the Pāṇḍavas will bring me fame in the world, but it will bring him infamy.
वृणोमि कीर्तिं लोके हि जीवितेनापि भानुमन् ।
कीर्तिमानश्नुते स्वर्गं हीनकीर्तिस्तु नश्यति ॥३१॥
31. vṛṇomi kīrtiṁ loke hi jīvitenāpi bhānuman ,
kīrtimānaśnute svargaṁ hīnakīrtistu naśyati.
31. vṛṇomi kīrtim loke hi jīvitena api bhānuman |
kīrtimān aśnute svargam hīnakīrtiḥ tu naśyati
31. O resplendent one, I indeed choose fame in the world, even at the cost of my life. A person who possesses fame attains heaven, but one whose fame is lost (or who lacks fame) perishes.
कीर्तिर्हि पुरुषं लोके संजीवयति मातृवत् ।
अकीर्तिर्जीवितं हन्ति जीवतोऽपि शरीरिणः ॥३२॥
32. kīrtirhi puruṣaṁ loke saṁjīvayati mātṛvat ,
akīrtirjīvitaṁ hanti jīvato'pi śarīriṇaḥ.
32. kīrtiḥ hi puruṣam loke saṃjīvayati mātṛvat |
akīrtiḥ jīvitam hanti jīvataḥ api śarīriṇaḥ
32. Indeed, fame enlivens a person (puruṣa) in the world just like a mother. Infamy destroys the life of even an embodied being (śarīrin) who is still alive.
अयं पुराणः श्लोको हि स्वयं गीतो विभावसो ।
धात्रा लोकेश्वर यथा कीर्तिरायुर्नरस्य वै ॥३३॥
33. ayaṁ purāṇaḥ śloko hi svayaṁ gīto vibhāvaso ,
dhātrā lokeśvara yathā kīrtirāyurnarasya vai.
33. ayam purāṇaḥ ślokaḥ hi svayam gītaḥ vibhāvaso |
dhātrā lokeśvara yathā kīrtiḥ āyuḥ narasya vai
33. O resplendent one, this ancient verse was indeed personally sung by the Creator (Dhātṛ) himself, O lord of the worlds, [stating] that fame is truly the life of a person.
पुरुषस्य परे लोके कीर्तिरेव परायणम् ।
इह लोके विशुद्धा च कीर्तिरायुर्विवर्धनी ॥३४॥
34. puruṣasya pare loke kīrtireva parāyaṇam ,
iha loke viśuddhā ca kīrtirāyurvivardhanī.
34. puruṣasya pare loke kīrtiḥ eva parāyaṇam
iha loke viśuddhā ca kīrtiḥ āyuḥ vivardhanī
34. For a person (puruṣa) in the next world, fame is truly the ultimate refuge. In this world, pure renown also prolongs life.
सोऽहं शरीरजे दत्त्वा कीर्तिं प्राप्स्यामि शाश्वतीम् ।
दत्त्वा च विधिवद्दानं ब्राह्मणेभ्यो यथाविधि ॥३५॥
35. so'haṁ śarīraje dattvā kīrtiṁ prāpsyāmi śāśvatīm ,
dattvā ca vidhivaddānaṁ brāhmaṇebhyo yathāvidhi.
35. saḥ aham śarīraje dattvā kīrtim prāpsyāmi śāśvatīm
dattvā ca vidhivat dānam brāhmaṇebhyaḥ yathāvidhi
35. Thus I, having transferred [my] renown to my son (śarīraja), will achieve everlasting fame. This I will accomplish by giving gifts (dāna) to Brahmins according to the proper rites...
हुत्वा शरीरं संग्रामे कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम् ।
विजित्य वा परानाजौ यशः प्राप्स्यामि केवलम् ॥३६॥
36. hutvā śarīraṁ saṁgrāme kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram ,
vijitya vā parānājau yaśaḥ prāpsyāmi kevalam.
36. hutvā śarīram saṅgrāme kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram
vijitya vā parān ājau yaśaḥ prāpsyāmi kevalam
36. ...by sacrificing my body in battle; by performing an exceedingly difficult deed (karma); or by conquering my enemies in combat, I shall attain pure glory.
भीतानामभयं दत्त्वा संग्रामे जीवितार्थिनाम् ।
वृद्धान्बालान्द्विजातींश्च मोक्षयित्वा महाभयात् ॥३७॥
37. bhītānāmabhayaṁ dattvā saṁgrāme jīvitārthinām ,
vṛddhānbālāndvijātīṁśca mokṣayitvā mahābhayāt.
37. bhītānām abhayam dattvā saṅgrāme jīvitārthinām
vṛddhān bālān dvijātīn ca mokṣayitvā mahābhayāt
37. ...by granting safety to those fearful ones desiring life in battle; and by liberating the aged, children, and the twice-born (dvijāti) from great danger.
प्राप्स्यामि परमं लोके यशः स्वर्भानुसूदन ।
जीवितेनापि मे रक्ष्या कीर्तिस्तद्विद्धि मे व्रतम् ॥३८॥
38. prāpsyāmi paramaṁ loke yaśaḥ svarbhānusūdana ,
jīvitenāpi me rakṣyā kīrtistadviddhi me vratam.
38. prāpsyāmi paramam loke yaśaḥ svarbhānusūdana
jīvitena api me rakṣyā kīrtiḥ tat viddhi me vratam
38. O destroyer of Svarbhānu, I will achieve supreme fame in the world. My glory must be protected even at the cost of my life. Know that this is my vow.
सोऽहं दत्त्वा मघवते भिक्षामेतामनुत्तमाम् ।
ब्राह्मणच्छद्मिने देव लोके गन्ता परां गतिम् ॥३९॥
39. so'haṁ dattvā maghavate bhikṣāmetāmanuttamām ,
brāhmaṇacchadmine deva loke gantā parāṁ gatim.
39. saḥ aham dattvā maghavate bhikṣām etām anuttamām
brāhmaṇacchadmine deva loke gantā parām gatim
39. O god, having given these unsurpassed alms to Indra, who is disguised as a Brahmin, I shall attain the supreme state in the world.
