वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथा विलप्योपरता भर्तुः पादौ प्रगृह्य सा ।
उपविष्टाभवद्देवी सोच्छ्वासं पुत्रमीक्षती ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathā vilapyoparatā bhartuḥ pādau pragṛhya sā ,
upaviṣṭābhavaddevī socchvāsaṁ putramīkṣatī.

pragṛhya sā upaviṣṭā abhavat devī sa-ucchvāsam putram īkṣatī
1. Vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca: tathā vilapya uparatā sā devī bhartuḥ pādau pragṛhya sa-ucchvāsam putram īkṣatī upaviṣṭā abhavat.
1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having lamented thus and then ceased, that goddess, grasping her husband's feet, sat down, sighing as she looked at her son.
ततः संज्ञां पुनर्लब्ध्वा स राजा बभ्रुवाहनः ।
मातरं तामथालोक्य रणभूमावथाब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. tataḥ saṁjñāṁ punarlabdhvā sa rājā babhruvāhanaḥ ,
mātaraṁ tāmathālokya raṇabhūmāvathābravīt.
2. tataḥ saṃjñām punar labdhvā saḥ rājā babhruvāhanaḥ
| mātaram tām atha ālokya raṇabhūmau atha abravīt
2. tataḥ saḥ rājā babhruvāhanaḥ punar saṃjñām labdhvā
atha raṇabhūmau tām mātaram ālokya atha abravīt
2. Then, having regained consciousness, that king Babhruvāhana, after seeing his mother on the battlefield, then spoke.
इतो दुःखतरं किं नु यन्मे माता सुखैधिता ।
भूमौ निपतितं वीरमनुशेते मृतं पतिम् ॥३॥
3. ito duḥkhataraṁ kiṁ nu yanme mātā sukhaidhitā ,
bhūmau nipatitaṁ vīramanuśete mṛtaṁ patim.
3. itaḥ duḥkhataram kim nu yat me mātā sukhaidhitā
| bhūmau nipatitam vīram anuśete mṛtam patim
3. itaḥ kim nu duḥkhataram yat sukhaidhitā me mātā
bhūmau nipatitam mṛtam vīram patim anuśete
3. What, indeed, is more sorrowful than this, that my mother, who was nurtured in comfort, lies on the ground, grieving for (anuśete) her dead hero husband who has fallen?
निहन्तारं रणेऽरीणां सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् ।
मया विनिहतं संख्ये प्रेक्षते दुर्मरं बत ॥४॥
4. nihantāraṁ raṇe'rīṇāṁ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varam ,
mayā vinihataṁ saṁkhye prekṣate durmaraṁ bata.
4. nihantāram raṇe arīṇām sarvaśastrabhṛtām varam
| mayā vinihatam saṅkhye prekṣate durmaram bata
4. (sā mātā) raṇe arīṇām nihantāram sarvaśastrabhṛtām varam
mayā saṅkhye vinihatam durmaram patim bata prekṣate
4. She (my mother) gazes upon her husband, the destroyer of foes in battle, the foremost of all weapon-bearers, who was, alas, slain by me in combat - a truly difficult death to witness.
अहोऽस्या हृदयं देव्या दृढं यन्न विदीर्यते ।
व्यूढोरस्कं महाबाहुं प्रेक्षन्त्या निहतं पतिम् ॥५॥
5. aho'syā hṛdayaṁ devyā dṛḍhaṁ yanna vidīryate ,
vyūḍhoraskaṁ mahābāhuṁ prekṣantyā nihataṁ patim.
5. aho asyāḥ hṛdayam devyāḥ dṛḍham yat na vidīryate
| vyūḍhoraskam mahābāhum prekṣantyā nihatam patim
5. aho asyāḥ devyāḥ hṛdayam dṛḍham yat (tat) nihatam
vyūḍhoraskam mahābāhum patim prekṣantyā (api) na vidīryate
5. Alas, how firm is the heart of this goddess-like lady (devī), that it does not burst, even as she beholds her husband, broad-chested and mighty-armed, lying slain!
दुर्मरं पुरुषेणेह मन्ये ह्यध्वन्यनागते ।
यत्र नाहं न मे माता विप्रयुज्येत जीवितात् ॥६॥
6. durmaraṁ puruṣeṇeha manye hyadhvanyanāgate ,
yatra nāhaṁ na me mātā viprayujyeta jīvitāt.
6. durmaram puruṣeṇa iha manye hi adhvan anāgate
yatra na aham na me mātā viprayujyeta jīvitāt
6. iha puruṣeṇa adhvan anāgate durmaram hi manye
yatra na aham na me mātā jīvitāt viprayujyeta
6. I consider it truly a difficult death for a man here, on an untimely path, where neither I nor my mother would be separated from life (i.e., we are left alive to face this sorrow).
अहो धिक्कुरुवीरस्य ह्युरःस्थं काञ्चनं भुवि ।
व्यपविद्धं हतस्येह मया पुत्रेण पश्यत ॥७॥
7. aho dhikkuruvīrasya hyuraḥsthaṁ kāñcanaṁ bhuvi ,
vyapaviddhaṁ hatasyeha mayā putreṇa paśyata.
7. aho dhik kuruvīrasya hi uraḥstham kāñcanam bhuvi
vyapaviddham hatasya iha mayā putreṇa paśyata
7. aho dhik! paśyata iha bhuvi hatasya kuruvīrasya
hi uraḥstham kāñcanam mayā putreṇa vyapaviddham
7. Oh, alas! Behold, on the ground here, the golden ornament from the chest of the slain Kuru hero, cast aside by me, his son!
भो भो पश्यत मे वीरं पितरं ब्राह्मणा भुवि ।
शयानं वीरशयने मया पुत्रेण पातितम् ॥८॥
8. bho bho paśyata me vīraṁ pitaraṁ brāhmaṇā bhuvi ,
śayānaṁ vīraśayane mayā putreṇa pātitam.
8. bho bho paśyata me vīram pitaraṃ brāhmaṇāḥ
bhuvi śayānam vīraśayane mayā putreṇa pātitam
8. bho bho brāhmaṇāḥ! paśyata me vīram pitaraṃ
bhuvi vīraśayane śayānam mayā putreṇa pātitam
8. O Brahmins (brāhmaṇāḥ), behold my heroic father lying on the ground, on a hero's bed (the battlefield), struck down by me, his own son!
ब्राह्मणाः कुरुमुख्यस्य प्रयुक्ता हयसारिणः ।
कुर्वन्तु शान्तिकां त्वद्य रणे योऽयं मया हतः ॥९॥
9. brāhmaṇāḥ kurumukhyasya prayuktā hayasāriṇaḥ ,
kurvantu śāntikāṁ tvadya raṇe yo'yaṁ mayā hataḥ.
9. brāhmaṇāḥ kurumukhyasya prayuktāḥ hayasāriṇaḥ
kurvantu śāntikām tu adya raṇe yaḥ ayam mayā hataḥ
9. brāhmaṇāḥ! prayuktāḥ hayasāriṇaḥ adya raṇe mayā
yaḥ ayam hataḥ kurumukhyasya śāntikām tu kurvantu
9. O Brahmins (brāhmaṇāḥ), appointed and swift like horses, let them perform a pacification rite (śāntikā) today for this chief of the Kurus who was slain by me in battle.
व्यादिशन्तु च किं विप्राः प्रायश्चित्तमिहाद्य मे ।
सुनृशंसस्य पापस्य पितृहन्तू रणाजिरे ॥१०॥
10. vyādiśantu ca kiṁ viprāḥ prāyaścittamihādya me ,
sunṛśaṁsasya pāpasya pitṛhantū raṇājire.
10. vyādiśantu ca kim viprāḥ prāyaścittam iha adya
me sunṛśaṃsasya pāpasya pitṛhantū raṇājire
10. viprāḥ me sunṛśaṃsasya pāpasya pitṛhantū
raṇājire iha adya kim prāyaścittam ca vyādiśantu
10. O Brahmins, please prescribe for me today what expiation there is for me, the exceedingly cruel and sinful killer of my father on the battlefield.
दुश्चरा द्वादश समा हत्वा पितरमद्य वै ।
ममेह सुनृशंसस्य संवीतस्यास्य चर्मणा ॥११॥
11. duścarā dvādaśa samā hatvā pitaramadya vai ,
mameha sunṛśaṁsasya saṁvītasyāsya carmaṇā.
11. duścarā dvādaśa samā hatvā pitaram adya vai
mama iha sunṛśaṃsasya saṃvītasya asya carmaṇā
11. vai adya pitaram hatvā mama sunṛśaṃsasya asya
carmaṇā saṃvītasya iha dvādaśa samā duścarā
11. Indeed, for me, the exceedingly cruel one, who killed my father today and is now clad in this skin, even twelve years (of penance) here are difficult to perform.
शिरःकपाले चास्यैव भुञ्जतः पितुरद्य मे ।
प्रायश्चित्तं हि नास्त्यन्यद्धत्वाद्य पितरं मम ॥१२॥
12. śiraḥkapāle cāsyaiva bhuñjataḥ pituradya me ,
prāyaścittaṁ hi nāstyanyaddhatvādya pitaraṁ mama.
12. śiraḥkapāle ca asya eva bhuñjataḥ pituḥ adya me
prāyaścittam hi na asti anyat hatvā adya pitaram mama
12. ca adya asya eva bhuñjataḥ pituḥ śiraḥkapāle me hi
mama pitaram adya hatvā anyat prāyaścittam na asti
12. And indeed, for me, who today eats from this very father's skull, there is no other expiation possible after having killed my father.
पश्य नागोत्तमसुते भर्तारं निहतं मया ।
कृतं प्रियं मया तेऽद्य निहत्य समरेऽर्जुनम् ॥१३॥
13. paśya nāgottamasute bhartāraṁ nihataṁ mayā ,
kṛtaṁ priyaṁ mayā te'dya nihatya samare'rjunam.
13. paśya nāgottamasute bhartāram nihatam mayā
kṛtam priyam mayā te adya nihatya samare arjunam
13. nāgottamasute mayā nihatam bhartāram paśya adya
samare arjunam nihatya mayā te priyam kṛtam
13. O daughter of the best of Nāgas, behold your husband, slain by me. Today, I have done a favor for you by killing Arjuna in battle.
सोऽहमप्यद्य यास्यामि गतिं पितृनिषेविताम् ।
न शक्नोम्यात्मनात्मानमहं धारयितुं शुभे ॥१४॥
14. so'hamapyadya yāsyāmi gatiṁ pitṛniṣevitām ,
na śaknomyātmanātmānamahaṁ dhārayituṁ śubhe.
14. saḥ aham api adya yāsyāmi gatim pitṛ-niṣevitām |
na śaknomi ātmanā ātmānam aham dhārayitum śubhe
14. saḥ aham api adya pitṛ-niṣevitām gatim yāsyāmi
śubhe aham ātmanā ātmānam dhārayitum na śaknomi
14. Therefore, I too will now attain the path traversed by my ancestors. O beautiful one, I am unable to sustain my very self (ātman) by my own will.
सा त्वं मयि मृते मातस्तथा गाण्डीवधन्वनि ।
भव प्रीतिमती देवि सत्येनात्मानमालभे ॥१५॥
15. sā tvaṁ mayi mṛte mātastathā gāṇḍīvadhanvani ,
bhava prītimatī devi satyenātmānamālabhe.
15. sā tvam mayi mṛte mātaḥ tathā gāṇḍīva-dhanvani
| bhava prītimatī devi satyena ātmānam ālabhe
15. mātaḥ sā tvam mayi mṛte tathā gāṇḍīva-dhanvani
prītimatī bhava devi satyena ātmānam ālabhe
15. Therefore, O mother, even after I die, you should be affectionate towards the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow. O goddess, I swear by truth (satya) upon my very being (ātman).
इत्युक्त्वा स तदा राजा दुःखशोकसमाहतः ।
उपस्पृश्य महाराज दुःखाद्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. ityuktvā sa tadā rājā duḥkhaśokasamāhataḥ ,
upaspṛśya mahārāja duḥkhādvacanamabravīt.
16. iti uktvā saḥ tadā rājā duḥkha-śoka-samāhataḥ
| upaspṛśya mahārāja duḥkhāt vacanam abravīt
16. iti uktvā saḥ rājā tadā duḥkha-śoka-samāhataḥ
upaspṛśya mahārāja duḥkhāt vacanam abravīt
16. Having said this, that king, then overcome with sorrow and grief, O great king, spoke these words out of anguish after touching water for purification.
शृण्वन्तु सर्वभूतानि स्थावराणि चराणि च ।
त्वं च मातर्यथा सत्यं ब्रवीमि भुजगोत्तमे ॥१७॥
17. śṛṇvantu sarvabhūtāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca ,
tvaṁ ca mātaryathā satyaṁ bravīmi bhujagottame.
17. śṛṇvantu sarva-bhūtāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca |
tvam ca mātaḥ yathā satyam bravīmi bhujaga-uttame
17. sarva-bhūtāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca śṛṇvantu mātaḥ tvam ca,
bhujaga-uttame,
yathā satyam bravīmi
17. Let all beings, both stationary and moving, listen! And you, O mother, O best of serpents, I speak the truth as it is.
यदि नोत्तिष्ठति जयः पिता मे भरतर्षभः ।
अस्मिन्नेव रणोद्देशे शोषयिष्ये कलेवरम् ॥१८॥
18. yadi nottiṣṭhati jayaḥ pitā me bharatarṣabhaḥ ,
asminneva raṇoddeśe śoṣayiṣye kalevaram.
18. yadi na uttiṣṭhati jayaḥ pitā me bharatarṣabhaḥ
asmin eva raṇoddeśe śoṣayiṣye kalevaram
18. bharatarṣabhaḥ yadi me pitā jayaḥ na uttiṣṭhati,
asmin eva raṇoddeśe kalevaram śoṣayiṣye.
18. If victory does not arise for my father, O best of the Bharatas, then I shall give up my life on this very battlefield.
न हि मे पितरं हत्वा निष्कृतिर्विद्यते क्वचित् ।
नरकं प्रतिपत्स्यामि ध्रुवं गुरुवधार्दितः ॥१९॥
19. na hi me pitaraṁ hatvā niṣkṛtirvidyate kvacit ,
narakaṁ pratipatsyāmi dhruvaṁ guruvadhārditaḥ.
19. na hi me pitaram hatvā niṣkṛtiḥ vidyate kvacit
narakam pratipatsyāmi dhruvam guruvadhārditaḥ
19. hi me pitaram hatvā kvacit niṣkṛtiḥ na vidyate.
guruvadhārditaḥ dhruvam narakam pratipatsyāmi.
19. Indeed, there is no expiation (niṣkṛti) for me anywhere after killing my father. Afflicted by the murder of my venerable father (guruvadhārdita), I shall certainly attain hell (naraka).
वीरं हि क्षत्रियं हत्वा गोशतेन प्रमुच्यते ।
पितरं तु निहत्यैवं दुस्तरा निष्कृतिर्मया ॥२०॥
20. vīraṁ hi kṣatriyaṁ hatvā gośatena pramucyate ,
pitaraṁ tu nihatyaivaṁ dustarā niṣkṛtirmayā.
20. vīram hi kṣatriyam hatvā gośatena pramucyate
pitaram tu nihatya evam dustarā niṣkṛtiḥ mayā
20. hi vīram kṣatriyam hatvā (janaḥ) gośatena pramucyate.
tu mayā evam pitaram nihatya niṣkṛtiḥ dustarā (bhavati).
20. Indeed, by killing a heroic warrior (kṣatriya), one is absolved by offering a hundred cows. But for me, having thus killed my father, expiation (niṣkṛti) is insurmountable.
एष ह्येको महातेजाः पाण्डुपुत्रो धनंजयः ।
पिता च मम धर्मात्मा तस्य मे निष्कृतिः कुतः ॥२१॥
21. eṣa hyeko mahātejāḥ pāṇḍuputro dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
pitā ca mama dharmātmā tasya me niṣkṛtiḥ kutaḥ.
21. eṣaḥ hi ekaḥ mahātejāḥ pāṇḍuputraḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
pitā ca mama dharmātmā tasya me niṣkṛtiḥ kutaḥ
21. hi eṣaḥ ekaḥ mahātejāḥ pāṇḍuputraḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ ca mama dharmātmā pitā (asti).
tasya (vadhe) me niṣkṛtiḥ kutaḥ?
21. Indeed, this greatly glorious son of Pāṇḍu, Dhanañjaya, is my righteous-souled (dharmātmā) father. From where, then, can there be any expiation (niṣkṛti) for me concerning him?
इत्येवमुक्त्वा नृपते धनंजयसुतो नृपः ।
उपस्पृश्याभवत्तूष्णीं प्रायोपेतो महामतिः ॥२२॥
22. ityevamuktvā nṛpate dhanaṁjayasuto nṛpaḥ ,
upaspṛśyābhavattūṣṇīṁ prāyopeto mahāmatiḥ.
22. iti evam uktvā nṛpate dhanaṃjayasutaḥ nṛpaḥ
upaspṛśya abhavat tūṣṇīm prāyopetaḥ mahāmatiḥ
22. nṛpate iti evam uktvā dhanaṃjayasutaḥ nṛpaḥ
mahāmatiḥ prāyopetaḥ upaspṛśya tūṣṇīm abhavat
22. O King, having spoken thus, the great-minded king, son of Arjuna, having undertaken the vow of fasting unto death (prāyopaveśa), purified himself and became silent.
