अथ तत्र महार्चिष्माननलो वातसारथिः ।
तस्याविदूरे रक्षार्थं खगेन्द्रेण कृतोऽभवत् ॥१॥

1. Bhishma said: Then, not far from him, a great, effulgent fire, driven by the wind, was created by the king of birds (khagendra) for protection.
स चापि पार्श्वे सुष्वाप विश्वस्तो बकराट्तदा ।
कृतघ्नस्तु स दुष्टात्मा तं जिघांसुरजागरत् ॥२॥
2. sa cāpi pārśve suṣvāpa viśvasto bakarāṭtadā ,
kṛtaghnastu sa duṣṭātmā taṁ jighāṁsurajāgarat.
2. sa ca api pārśve suṣvāpa viśvastaḥ bakaraṭ tadā
kṛtaghnaḥ tu sa duṣṭātmā tam jighāṃsuḥ ajāgarat

2. And that crane-king (bakaraṭ), trusting, then slept soundly by its side. But that ungrateful (kṛtaghna), evil-souled (duṣṭātmā) one, desiring to kill him, remained awake.
ततोऽलातेन दीप्तेन विश्वस्तं निजघान तम् ।
निहत्य च मुदा युक्तः सोऽनुबन्धं न दृष्टवान् ॥३॥
3. tato'lātena dīptena viśvastaṁ nijaghāna tam ,
nihatya ca mudā yuktaḥ so'nubandhaṁ na dṛṣṭavān.
3. tataḥ alātena dīptena viśvastaṃ nijaghāna tam
nihatya ca mudā yuktaḥ saḥ anubandhaṃ na dṛṣṭavān
3. tataḥ dīptena alātena viśvastaṃ tam nijaghāna ca

3. Then, with a blazing firebrand, he struck and killed that trusting one. And, filled with joy after committing the murder, he did not perceive the consequences.
स तं विपक्षरोमाणं कृत्वाग्नावपचत्तदा ।
तं गृहीत्वा सुवर्णं च ययौ द्रुततरं द्विजः ॥४॥
4. sa taṁ vipakṣaromāṇaṁ kṛtvāgnāvapacattadā ,
taṁ gṛhītvā suvarṇaṁ ca yayau drutataraṁ dvijaḥ.
4. sa tam vipakṣaromāṇam kṛtvā agnau apacat tadā
tam gṛhītvā suvarṇam ca yayau drutataram dvijaḥ

4. He (the crane-king) then de-feathered him (the hawk) and cooked him in the fire. Then, having taken that (cooked body) and some gold, that twice-born (dvija) [crane-king] went away very quickly.
ततोऽन्यस्मिन्गते चाह्नि विरूपाक्षोऽब्रवीत्सुतम् ।
न प्रेक्षे राजधर्माणमद्य पुत्र खगोत्तमम् ॥५॥
5. tato'nyasmingate cāhni virūpākṣo'bravītsutam ,
na prekṣe rājadharmāṇamadya putra khagottamam.
5. tataḥ anyasmin gate ca ahni virūpākṣaḥ abravīt
sutam na prekṣe rājadharmāṇam adya putra khagottamam

5. Then, on the following day, Virūpākṣa spoke to his son: 'My son, today I do not see that best among birds who embodies the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a king.'
स पूर्वसंध्यां ब्रह्माणं वन्दितुं याति सर्वदा ।
मां चादृष्ट्वा कदाचित्स न गच्छति गृहान्खगः ॥६॥
6. sa pūrvasaṁdhyāṁ brahmāṇaṁ vandituṁ yāti sarvadā ,
māṁ cādṛṣṭvā kadācitsa na gacchati gṛhānkhagaḥ.
6. saḥ pūrvasandhyām brahmāṇam vanditum yāti sarvadā
mām ca adṛṣṭvā kadācit saḥ na gacchati gṛhān khagaḥ
6. saḥ sarvadā pūrvasandhyām brahmāṇam vanditum yāti
ca mām adṛṣṭvā khagaḥ kadācit saḥ gṛhān na gacchati
6. He always goes to worship Brahma during the morning twilight (sandhyā). And that bird never returns home without seeing me.
उभे द्विरात्रं संध्ये वै नाभ्यगात्स ममालयम् ।
तस्मान्न शुध्यते भावो मम स ज्ञायतां सुहृत् ॥७॥
7. ubhe dvirātraṁ saṁdhye vai nābhyagātsa mamālayam ,
tasmānna śudhyate bhāvo mama sa jñāyatāṁ suhṛt.
7. ubhe dvirātram sandhye vai na abhyagāt saḥ mama ālayam
tasmāt na śuddhyate bhāvaḥ mama saḥ jñāyatām suhṛt
7. vai saḥ dvirātram ubhe sandhye mama ālayam na abhyagāt
tasmāt mama bhāvaḥ na śuddhyate saḥ suhṛt jñāyatām
7. For two consecutive nights, he has not come to my dwelling at either of the two twilight periods (sandhyā). Therefore, my heart (bhāva) is troubled; let that friend be sought out.
स्वाध्यायेन वियुक्तो हि ब्रह्मवर्चसवर्जितः ।
तं गतस्तत्र मे शङ्का हन्यात्तं स द्विजाधमः ॥८॥
8. svādhyāyena viyukto hi brahmavarcasavarjitaḥ ,
taṁ gatastatra me śaṅkā hanyāttaṁ sa dvijādhamaḥ.
8. svādhyāyena viyūktaḥ hi brahmavarcasavarjitaḥ tam
gataḥ tatra me śaṅkā hanyāt tam saḥ dvijādhamaḥ
8. hi saḥ svādhyāyena viyūktaḥ brahmavarcasavarjitaḥ
tam tatra gataḥ me śaṅkā saḥ dvijādhamaḥ tam hanyāt
8. Indeed, he (the bird) would be bereft of his self-study (svādhyāya) and deprived of his Brahmanical luster (brahmavarcasa) by now. My fear is that having gone there, that low Brahmin (dvijādhama) might have killed him.
दुराचारस्तु दुर्बुद्धिरिङ्गितैर्लक्षितो मया ।
निष्क्रियो दारुणाकारः कृष्णो दस्युरिवाधमः ॥९॥
9. durācārastu durbuddhiriṅgitairlakṣito mayā ,
niṣkriyo dāruṇākāraḥ kṛṣṇo dasyurivādhamaḥ.
9. durācāraḥ tu durbuddhiḥ iṅgitaiḥ lakṣitaḥ mayā
niṣkriyaḥ dāruṇākāraḥ kṛṣṇaḥ dasyuḥ iva adhamaḥ
9. mayā iṅgitaiḥ (saḥ) lakṣitaḥ; durācāraḥ durbuddhiḥ
niṣkriyaḥ dāruṇākāraḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tu dasyuḥ iva adhamaḥ
9. I have observed by his gestures that the ill-behaved, evil-minded, inactive person, dark and dreadful in appearance, is as vile as a robber.
गौतमः स गतस्तत्र तेनोद्विग्नं मनो मम ।
पुत्र शीघ्रमितो गत्वा राजधर्मनिवेशनम् ।
ज्ञायतां स विशुद्धात्मा यदि जीवति माचिरम् ॥१०॥
10. gautamaḥ sa gatastatra tenodvignaṁ mano mama ,
putra śīghramito gatvā rājadharmaniveśanam ,
jñāyatāṁ sa viśuddhātmā yadi jīvati māciram.
10. gautamaḥ saḥ gataḥ tatra tena udvignam
manaḥ mama putra śīghram itaḥ
gatvā rājadharmaniveśanam jñāyatām
saḥ viśuddhātmā yadi jīvati mā ciram
10. saḥ gautamaḥ tatra gataḥ; tena mama manaḥ udvignam.
putra,
itaḥ śīghram rājadharmaniveśanam gatvā,
yadi saḥ viśuddhātmā jīvati (iti) mā ciram jñāyatām
10. He, Gautama, went there; my mind is agitated by that. Son, go quickly from here to the abode of royal law (dharma) and ascertain without delay if that pure-souled (ātman) one lives.
स एवमुक्तस्त्वरितो रक्षोभिः सहितो ययौ ।
न्यग्रोधं तत्र चापश्यत्कङ्कालं राजधर्मणः ॥११॥
11. sa evamuktastvarito rakṣobhiḥ sahito yayau ,
nyagrodhaṁ tatra cāpaśyatkaṅkālaṁ rājadharmaṇaḥ.
11. saḥ evam uktaḥ tvaritaḥ rakṣobhiḥ sahitaḥ yayau
nyagrodham tatra ca apaśyat kaṅkālam rājadharmaṇaḥ
11. saḥ evam uktaḥ,
tvaritaḥ,
rakṣobhiḥ sahitaḥ (san) yayau.
ca tatra nyagrodham (sthitaṃ) rājadharmaṇaḥ kaṅkālam apaśyat
11. Addressed thus, he quickly went, accompanied by the Rākṣasas. And there, under a banyan tree, he saw the skeleton of Rājadharman.
स रुदन्नगमत्पुत्रो राक्षसेन्द्रस्य धीमतः ।
त्वरमाणः परं शक्त्या गौतमग्रहणाय वै ॥१२॥
12. sa rudannagamatputro rākṣasendrasya dhīmataḥ ,
tvaramāṇaḥ paraṁ śaktyā gautamagrahaṇāya vai.
12. saḥ rudan agamat putraḥ rākṣasendrasya dhīmataḥ
tvaramāṇaḥ param śaktyā gautamagrahaṇāya vai
12. saḥ rākṣasendrasya dhīmataḥ putraḥ rudan (san),
param śaktyā tvaramāṇaḥ,
gautamagrahaṇāya vai agamat
12. That son of the wise king of Rākṣasas went, weeping and hurrying with utmost strength (śakti), indeed, for the capture of Gautama.
ततोऽविदूरे जगृहुर्गौतमं राक्षसास्तदा ।
राजधर्मशरीरं च पक्षास्थिचरणोज्झितम् ॥१३॥
13. tato'vidūre jagṛhurgautamaṁ rākṣasāstadā ,
rājadharmaśarīraṁ ca pakṣāsthicaraṇojjhitam.
13. tataḥ avidūre jagṛhuḥ gautamam rākṣasāḥ tadā
rājadharmaśarīram ca pakṣāsthicaraṇojjhitam
13. tadā rākṣasāḥ tataḥ avidūre gautamam ca
rājadharmaśarīram pakṣāsthicaraṇojjhitam jagṛhuḥ
13. Then, not far away, the demons (rakṣasas) at that time seized Gautama, along with his body, which was the embodiment of royal conduct (rājadharma) and was devoid of wings, bones, and feet.
तमादायाथ रक्षांसि द्रुतं मेरुव्रजं ययुः ।
राज्ञश्च दर्शयामासुः शरीरं राजधर्मणः ।
कृतघ्नं पुरुषं तं च गौतमं पापचेतसम् ॥१४॥
14. tamādāyātha rakṣāṁsi drutaṁ meruvrajaṁ yayuḥ ,
rājñaśca darśayāmāsuḥ śarīraṁ rājadharmaṇaḥ ,
kṛtaghnaṁ puruṣaṁ taṁ ca gautamaṁ pāpacetasam.
14. tam ādāya atha rakṣāṃsi drutam
meruvrajam yayuḥ rājñaḥ ca darśayāmāsuḥ
śarīram rājadharmaṇaḥ kṛtaghnam
puruṣam tam ca gautamam pāpacetasam
14. atha rakṣāṃsi tam ādāya drutam
meruvrajam yayuḥ ca rājñaḥ śarīram
rājadharmaṇaḥ tam kṛtaghnam pāpacetasam
puruṣam gautamam ca darśayāmāsuḥ
14. Having taken him (Gautama), the demons (rakṣasas) then quickly went to Meruvraja. They showed the king both the body (of him) who had practiced royal conduct (rājadharma), and that ungrateful, evil-minded man, Gautama.
रुरोद राजा तं दृष्ट्वा सामात्यः सपुरोहितः ।
आर्तनादश्च सुमहानभूत्तस्य निवेशने ॥१५॥
15. ruroda rājā taṁ dṛṣṭvā sāmātyaḥ sapurohitaḥ ,
ārtanādaśca sumahānabhūttasya niveśane.
15. rurōda rājā tam dṛṣṭvā sāmātyaḥ sapurohitaḥ
ārtanādaḥ ca sumahān abhūt tasya niveśane
15. tam dṛṣṭvā sāmātyaḥ sapurohitaḥ rājā rurōda

15. Having seen him, the king cried, along with his ministers and priests. A very great cry of distress arose in his palace.
सस्त्रीकुमारं च पुरं बभूवास्वस्थमानसम् ।
अथाब्रवीन्नृपः पुत्रं पापोऽयं वध्यतामिति ॥१६॥
16. sastrīkumāraṁ ca puraṁ babhūvāsvasthamānasam ,
athābravīnnṛpaḥ putraṁ pāpo'yaṁ vadhyatāmiti.
16. sastrīkumāram ca puram babhūva asvasthamānasam
atha abravīt nṛpaḥ putram pāpaḥ ayam vadhyatām iti
16. ca sastrīkumāram puram asvasthamānasam babhūva atha
nṛpaḥ putram abravīt "ayam pāpaḥ vadhyatām" iti
16. And the city, along with its women and children, became distressed in mind. Then the king said to his son, "This wicked one should be killed!"
अस्य मांसैरिमे सर्वे विहरन्तु यथेष्टतः ।
पापाचारः पापकर्मा पापात्मा पापनिश्चयः ।
हन्तव्योऽयं मम मतिर्भवद्भिरिति राक्षसाः ॥१७॥
17. asya māṁsairime sarve viharantu yatheṣṭataḥ ,
pāpācāraḥ pāpakarmā pāpātmā pāpaniścayaḥ ,
hantavyo'yaṁ mama matirbhavadbhiriti rākṣasāḥ.

yathā iṣṭataḥ pāpācāraḥ pāpakarmā
pāpātmā pāpaniścayaḥ hantavyaḥ ayam

17. O Rākṣasas, let all these roam and enjoy as they please with his flesh. This one, whose conduct is wicked, whose deeds (karma) are wicked, whose soul (ātman) is wicked, and whose resolve is wicked, should be killed by you all. This is my opinion.
इत्युक्ता राक्षसेन्द्रेण राक्षसा घोरविक्रमाः ।
नैच्छन्त तं भक्षयितुं पापकर्मायमित्युत ॥१८॥
18. ityuktā rākṣasendreṇa rākṣasā ghoravikramāḥ ,
naicchanta taṁ bhakṣayituṁ pāpakarmāyamityuta.
18. iti uktāḥ rākṣasa indreṇa rākṣasāḥ ghora vikramāḥ
na aicchan tam bhakṣayitum pāpakarmā ayam iti uta

18. Thus addressed by the lord of Rākṣasas, those Rākṣasas of terrible prowess did not wish to devour him, saying, "Indeed, this one is a perpetrator of wicked deeds (karma)."
दस्यूनां दीयतामेष साध्वद्य पुरुषाधमः ।
इत्यूचुस्तं महाराज राक्षसेन्द्रं निशाचराः ॥१९॥
19. dasyūnāṁ dīyatāmeṣa sādhvadya puruṣādhamaḥ ,
ityūcustaṁ mahārāja rākṣasendraṁ niśācarāḥ.
19. dasyūnām dīyatām eṣaḥ sādhu adya puruṣa adhamaḥ
iti ūcuḥ tam mahārāja rākṣasa indram niśācarāḥ
19. niśācarāḥ,

ūcuḥ: "eṣaḥ,
puruṣa adhamaḥ,
sādhu adya,
dasyūnām,
dīyatām.
" iti.
19. "Let this vilest among men be given to the thieves (dasyu) now, that is proper!" Thus spoke the night-wanderers (rākṣasāḥ) to that great king, the lord of Rākṣasas.
शिरोभिश्च गता भूमिमूचू रक्षोगणाधिपम् ।
न दातुमर्हसि त्वं नो भक्षणायास्य किल्बिषम् ॥२०॥
20. śirobhiśca gatā bhūmimūcū rakṣogaṇādhipam ,
na dātumarhasi tvaṁ no bhakṣaṇāyāsya kilbiṣam.
20. śirobhiḥ ca gatāḥ bhūmim ūcuḥ rakṣas gaṇa adhipam
na dātum arhasi tvam naḥ bhakṣaṇāya asya kilbiṣam
20. ca,
śirobhiḥ,
bhūmim,
gatāḥ,
rakṣas gaṇa adhipam,
ūcuḥ: "tvam,
naḥ,
asya,
kilbiṣam,
bhakṣaṇāya,
dātum,
na arhasi.
"
20. And, bowing their heads to the ground, they said to the lord of the Rākṣasa hosts: "You ought not to give this sinner (kilbiṣa) to us for eating."
एवमस्त्विति तानाह राक्षसेन्द्रो निशाचरान् ।
दस्यूनां दीयतामेष कृतघ्नोऽद्यैव राक्षसाः ॥२१॥
21. evamastviti tānāha rākṣasendro niśācarān ,
dasyūnāṁ dīyatāmeṣa kṛtaghno'dyaiva rākṣasāḥ.
21. evam astu iti tān āha rākṣasendraḥ niśācarān
dasyūnām dīyatām eṣaḥ kṛtaghnaḥ adya eva rākṣasāḥ
21. rākṣasendraḥ niśācarān tān āha evam astu adya
eva eṣaḥ kṛtaghnaḥ dasyūnām dīyatām rākṣasāḥ
21. "So be it," said the king of rākṣasas to those night-wanderers (rākṣasas). "Let this ungrateful one be given to the bandits right now, O rākṣasas!"
इत्युक्ते तस्य ते दासाः शूलमुद्गरपाणयः ।
छित्त्वा तं खण्डशः पापं दस्युभ्यः प्रददुस्तदा ॥२२॥
22. ityukte tasya te dāsāḥ śūlamudgarapāṇayaḥ ,
chittvā taṁ khaṇḍaśaḥ pāpaṁ dasyubhyaḥ pradadustadā.
22. iti ukte tasya te dāsāḥ śūlamudgarapāṇayaḥ chittvā
tam khaṇḍaśaḥ pāpam dasyubhyaḥ pradaduḥ tadā
22. tasya te dāsāḥ śūlamudgarapāṇayaḥ iti ukte tam
pāpam chittvā khaṇḍaśaḥ tadā dasyubhyaḥ pradaduḥ
22. When this was said, his servants, bearing tridents and maces in their hands, cut that wicked one into pieces and then gave him to the bandits.
दस्यवश्चापि नैच्छन्त तमत्तुं पापकारिणम् ।
क्रव्यादा अपि राजेन्द्र कृतघ्नं नोपभुञ्जते ॥२३॥
23. dasyavaścāpi naicchanta tamattuṁ pāpakāriṇam ,
kravyādā api rājendra kṛtaghnaṁ nopabhuñjate.
23. dasyavaḥ ca api na aicchanta tam attum pāpakāriṇam
kravyādāḥ api rājendra kṛtaghnam na upabhuñjate
23. dasyavaḥ ca api tam pāpakāriṇam attum na aicchanta
rājendra kravyādāḥ api kṛtaghnam na upabhuñjate
23. Even the bandits did not wish to eat that evildoer. O King, even flesh-eaters (kravyād) do not consume an ungrateful person (kṛtaghna).
ब्रह्मघ्ने च सुरापे च चोरे भग्नव्रते तथा ।
निष्कृतिर्विहिता राजन्कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृतिः ॥२४॥
24. brahmaghne ca surāpe ca core bhagnavrate tathā ,
niṣkṛtirvihitā rājankṛtaghne nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ.

niṣkṛtiḥ vihitā rājan kṛtaghne na asti niṣkṛtiḥ
24. rājan brahmaghne ca surāpe ca core tathā bhagnavrate
niṣkṛtiḥ vihitā kṛtaghne na niṣkṛtiḥ asti
24. Atonement (niṣkṛti) is prescribed, O King, for a slayer of Brahmins (brahmaghna), for a liquor-drinker (surāpa), for a thief, and also for one who has broken a vow (bhagnavrata). But for an ungrateful person (kṛtaghna), there is no atonement (niṣkṛti).
मित्रद्रोही नृशंसश्च कृतघ्नश्च नराधमः ।
क्रव्यादैः कृमिभिश्चान्यैर्न भुज्यन्ते हि तादृशाः ॥२५॥
25. mitradrohī nṛśaṁsaśca kṛtaghnaśca narādhamaḥ ,
kravyādaiḥ kṛmibhiścānyairna bhujyante hi tādṛśāḥ.

kravyādaiḥ kṛmibhiḥ ca anyaiḥ na bhujyante hi tādṛśāḥ

25. A betrayer of friends, a cruel person, an ungrateful one, and the lowest among men - indeed, such individuals are not even consumed by carnivorous beasts, worms, or other creatures.
