Nārada said: O Yudhiṣṭhira, O son of Pṛthā (Pārtha), listen to me with your brothers, in detail, to this ancient narrative (itihāsa) just as it transpired.

In ancient times, in the lineage of the great asura Hiranyakashipu, there was a powerful and glorious chief of the daityas named Nikumbha.

To him were born two sons of great power and terrible prowess. They enjoyed everything together and never went anywhere without each other.

They were pleasing to each other, spoke kindly to each other, and had identical character and conduct, as if one being had been made into two.

Having grown up, those two very powerful brothers, who had a single resolve even in their undertakings, adopted a unified resolution for the purpose of conquering the three worlds.

6.
After performing the initiation ritual, they went to the Vindhya mountains, where they performed severe asceticism (tapas). Those two remained engaged in their asceticism (tapas) for a long time.

They were exhausted by hunger and thirst, wearing matted hair and bark garments. Their entire bodies were covered with dirt, and they subsisted only on air.

8.
They sacrificed their own flesh, stood on the tips of their big toes with their arms raised upwards, and remained unblinking, having maintained their vows (vrata) for a long time.

9.
Through the power of their asceticism (tapas), the Vindhya mountain, which had been intensely heated for a long time, emitted smoke, and that indeed was a wondrous sight.

10.
Then the gods became frightened after witnessing their intense asceticism (tapas). Therefore, the gods then created obstacles to impede that asceticism (tapas).
रत्नैः प्रलोभयामासुः स्त्रीभिश्चोभौ पुनः पुनः ।

11.
The gods repeatedly tempted both of them with jewels and women. Yet, those two, who observed such great vows (vrata), did not break their ascetic vow (vrata).

12.
Then, the gods again created an illusion (māyā) for those two great-souled (mahātman) beings. This illusion manifested as sisters, mothers, wives, and their attendants.

Terrified and tormented by a demon (rakṣas) holding a spear, their ornaments and hair disheveled, and their garments completely slipped off.

14.
Then, all of them, having run towards those two, cried out, "Protect us!" Yet, those two, who were observing very great ascetic disciplines (vrata), did not break their vow.

15.
When neither of the two (Mahāsura brothers) experienced any agitation or suffering, then those women and all the (illusionary) creatures disappeared.

16.
Then, the Grandfather (Brahmā) himself, the progenitor of all worlds, directly approached the two great demons (mahāsura) and offered them a boon.
ततः सुन्दोपसुन्दौ तौ भ्रातरौ दृढविक्रमौ ।

17.
Then, those two brothers, Sunda and Upasunda, mighty and resolute, upon seeing the god, the Grandfather (Brahma), stood there with folded hands.
ऊचतुश्च प्रभुं देवं ततस्तौ सहितौ तदा ।

18.
And then, those two, together, spoke to the Lord, the god (Brahma): "If the Grandfather (Brahma) is pleased by this spiritual discipline (tapas) of ours..."

19.
Let us both be adept in illusion (māyā) and weapons, powerful, capable of assuming any form at will, and immortal, if the Lord is pleased with us.

20.
The Grandfather (Brahma) said, "Everything else you two have asked for, except immortality, will be granted. As for death, choose a provision for it that is equivalent to that of the immortals."

21.
Due to this great spiritual discipline (tapas) that you two have performed, (thinking) 'we shall accomplish this', immortality cannot be granted.

22.
Because you two have undertaken severe austerity (tapas) for the sake of conquering the three worlds, O kings of the demons, I am unable to grant you your desired boon.

23.
Sunda and Upasunda said: 'O Grandfather, let there be no fear for us from anything in the three worlds, whether moving or non-moving, except from each other.'
पितामह उवाच ।

24.
Grandfather Brahma said: 'I grant you this desire, just as it was requested and articulated. And this condition regarding death will indeed come to pass for you two exactly as stated.'
नारद उवाच ।

Nārada said: 'Then, Grandfather Brahma, having granted that boon to those two and having made them cease their austerity (tapas), indeed departed to Brahmaloka.'

Seeing those two great asuras, who had obtained boons and achieved their desires, all their friends experienced great joy because of them.

Thereupon, those two, having given up their matted locks, became crowned, adorned with costly ornaments, and clad in spotless garments.

The two exceedingly pleased chiefs of the daityas, and their friends as well, then held an untimely lunar festival that fulfilled all desires.
