नारद उवाच ।
शृणु मे विस्तरेणेममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
भ्रातृभीः सहितः पार्थ यथावृत्तं युधिष्ठिर ॥१॥
1. nārada uvāca ,
śṛṇu me vistareṇemamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
bhrātṛbhīḥ sahitaḥ pārtha yathāvṛttaṁ yudhiṣṭhira.

1. Nārada said: O Yudhiṣṭhira, O son of Pṛthā (Pārtha), listen to me with your brothers, in detail, to this ancient narrative (itihāsa) just as it transpired.
महासुरस्यान्ववाये हिरण्यकशिपोः पुरा ।
निकुम्भो नाम दैत्येन्द्रस्तेजस्वी बलवानभूत् ॥२॥
2. mahāsurasyānvavāye hiraṇyakaśipoḥ purā ,
nikumbho nāma daityendrastejasvī balavānabhūt.

2. In ancient times, in the lineage of the great asura Hiranyakashipu, there was a powerful and glorious chief of the daityas named Nikumbha.
तस्य पुत्रौ महावीर्यौ जातौ भीमपराक्रमौ ।
सहान्योन्येन भुञ्जाते विनान्योन्यं न गच्छतः ॥३॥
3. tasya putrau mahāvīryau jātau bhīmaparākramau ,
sahānyonyena bhuñjāte vinānyonyaṁ na gacchataḥ.

anyonyena bhuñjāte vinā anyonyaṃ na gacchataḥ
3. To him were born two sons of great power and terrible prowess. They enjoyed everything together and never went anywhere without each other.
अन्योन्यस्य प्रियकरावन्योन्यस्य प्रियंवदौ ।
एकशीलसमाचारौ द्विधैवैकं यथा कृतौ ॥४॥
4. anyonyasya priyakarāvanyonyasya priyaṁvadau ,
ekaśīlasamācārau dvidhaivaikaṁ yathā kṛtau.
4. anyonyasya priyakarau anyonyasya priyaṃvadau
ekaśīlasamācārau dvidhā eva ekaṃ yathā kṛtau
4. They were pleasing to each other, spoke kindly to each other, and had identical character and conduct, as if one being had been made into two.
तौ विवृद्धौ महावीर्यौ कार्येष्वप्येकनिश्चयौ ।
त्रैलोक्यविजयार्थाय समास्थायैकनिश्चयम् ॥५॥
5. tau vivṛddhau mahāvīryau kāryeṣvapyekaniścayau ,
trailokyavijayārthāya samāsthāyaikaniścayam.

trailokyavijayārthāya samāsthāya ekaniścayam
5. Having grown up, those two very powerful brothers, who had a single resolve even in their undertakings, adopted a unified resolution for the purpose of conquering the three worlds.
कृत्वा दीक्षां गतौ विन्ध्यं तत्रोग्रं तेपतुस्तपः ।
तौ तु दीर्घेण कालेन तपोयुक्तौ बभूवतुः ॥६॥
6. kṛtvā dīkṣāṁ gatau vindhyaṁ tatrograṁ tepatustapaḥ ,
tau tu dīrgheṇa kālena tapoyuktau babhūvatuḥ.
6. kṛtvā dīkṣāṃ gatau vindhyaṃ tatra ugraṃ tepatuḥ
tapaḥ tau tu dīrgheṇa kālena tapoyuktau babhūvatuḥ
6. After performing the initiation ritual, they went to the Vindhya mountains, where they performed severe asceticism (tapas). Those two remained engaged in their asceticism (tapas) for a long time.
क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्तौ जटावल्कलधारिणौ ।
मलोपचितसर्वाङ्गौ वायुभक्षौ बभूवतुः ॥७॥
7. kṣutpipāsāpariśrāntau jaṭāvalkaladhāriṇau ,
malopacitasarvāṅgau vāyubhakṣau babhūvatuḥ.

malopacitasarvāṅgau vāyubhakṣau babhūvatuḥ
7. They were exhausted by hunger and thirst, wearing matted hair and bark garments. Their entire bodies were covered with dirt, and they subsisted only on air.
आत्ममांसानि जुह्वन्तौ पादाङ्गुष्ठाग्रधिष्ठितौ ।
ऊर्ध्वबाहू चानिमिषौ दीर्घकालं धृतव्रतौ ॥८॥
8. ātmamāṁsāni juhvantau pādāṅguṣṭhāgradhiṣṭhitau ,
ūrdhvabāhū cānimiṣau dīrghakālaṁ dhṛtavratau.
8. ātma māṃsāni juhvantau pādāṅguṣṭhāgrādhiṣṭhitau
ūrdhvabāhū ca animiṣau dīrghakālam dhṛtavratAu
8. They sacrificed their own flesh, stood on the tips of their big toes with their arms raised upwards, and remained unblinking, having maintained their vows (vrata) for a long time.
तयोस्तपःप्रभावेण दीर्घकालं प्रतापितः ।
धूमं प्रमुमुचे विन्ध्यस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥९॥
9. tayostapaḥprabhāveṇa dīrghakālaṁ pratāpitaḥ ,
dhūmaṁ pramumuce vindhyastadadbhutamivābhavat.
9. tayoḥ tapaḥprabhāveṇa dīrghakālam pratāpitaḥ
dhūmam pramumuce vindhyaḥ tat adbhutam iva abhavat
9. Through the power of their asceticism (tapas), the Vindhya mountain, which had been intensely heated for a long time, emitted smoke, and that indeed was a wondrous sight.
ततो देवाभवन्भीता उग्रं दृष्ट्वा तयोस्तपः ।
तपोविघातार्थमथो देवा विघ्नानि चक्रिरे ॥१०॥
10. tato devābhavanbhītā ugraṁ dṛṣṭvā tayostapaḥ ,
tapovighātārthamatho devā vighnāni cakrire.
10. tataḥ devāḥ abhavan bhītāḥ ugram dṛṣṭvā tayoḥ tapaḥ
tapovighātārtham atha u devāḥ vighnāni cakrire
10. Then the gods became frightened after witnessing their intense asceticism (tapas). Therefore, the gods then created obstacles to impede that asceticism (tapas).
रत्नैः प्रलोभयामासुः स्त्रीभिश्चोभौ पुनः पुनः ।
न च तौ चक्रतुर्भङ्गं व्रतस्य सुमहाव्रतौ ॥११॥
11. ratnaiḥ pralobhayāmāsuḥ strībhiścobhau punaḥ punaḥ ,
na ca tau cakraturbhaṅgaṁ vratasya sumahāvratau.
11. ratnaiḥ pralobhayāmāsuḥ strībhiḥ ca ubhau punaḥ punaḥ
na ca tau cakratuḥ bhaṅgam vratasya sumahāvratAu
11. The gods repeatedly tempted both of them with jewels and women. Yet, those two, who observed such great vows (vrata), did not break their ascetic vow (vrata).
अथ मायां पुनर्देवास्तयोश्चक्रुर्महात्मनोः ।
भगिन्यो मातरो भार्यास्तयोः परिजनस्तथा ॥१२॥
12. atha māyāṁ punardevāstayoścakrurmahātmanoḥ ,
bhaginyo mātaro bhāryāstayoḥ parijanastathā.
12. atha māyām punar devāḥ tayoḥ cakruḥ mahātmanoḥ
bhaginyaḥ mātaraḥ bhāryāḥ tayoḥ parijanaḥ tathā
12. Then, the gods again created an illusion (māyā) for those two great-souled (mahātman) beings. This illusion manifested as sisters, mothers, wives, and their attendants.
परिपात्यमाना वित्रस्ताः शूलहस्तेन रक्षसा ।
स्रस्ताभरणकेशान्ता एकान्तभ्रष्टवाससः ॥१३॥
13. paripātyamānā vitrastāḥ śūlahastena rakṣasā ,
srastābharaṇakeśāntā ekāntabhraṣṭavāsasaḥ.
13. paripātyamānāḥ vitrastāḥ śūlahastena rakṣasā
srastābharaṇakeśāntāḥ ekāntabhraṣṭavāsasaḥ
13. Terrified and tormented by a demon (rakṣas) holding a spear, their ornaments and hair disheveled, and their garments completely slipped off.
अभिधाव्य ततः सर्वास्तौ त्राहीति विचुक्रुशुः ।
न च तौ चक्रतुर्भङ्गं व्रतस्य सुमहाव्रतौ ॥१४॥
14. abhidhāvya tataḥ sarvāstau trāhīti vicukruśuḥ ,
na ca tau cakraturbhaṅgaṁ vratasya sumahāvratau.
14. abhidhāvya tataḥ sarvāḥ tau trāhi iti vicukruśuḥ
na ca tau cakratuḥ bhaṅgam vratasya sumahāvratī
14. Then, all of them, having run towards those two, cried out, "Protect us!" Yet, those two, who were observing very great ascetic disciplines (vrata), did not break their vow.
यदा क्षोभं नोपयाति नार्तिमन्यतरस्तयोः ।
ततः स्त्रियस्ता भूतं च सर्वमन्तरधीयत ॥१५॥
15. yadā kṣobhaṁ nopayāti nārtimanyatarastayoḥ ,
tataḥ striyastā bhūtaṁ ca sarvamantaradhīyata.
15. yadā kṣobham na upayāti na ārtim anyataraḥ tayoḥ
tataḥ striyaḥ tāḥ bhūtam ca sarvam antaradhīyata
15. When neither of the two (Mahāsura brothers) experienced any agitation or suffering, then those women and all the (illusionary) creatures disappeared.
ततः पितामहः साक्षादभिगम्य महासुरौ ।
वरेण छन्दयामास सर्वलोकपितामहः ॥१६॥
16. tataḥ pitāmahaḥ sākṣādabhigamya mahāsurau ,
vareṇa chandayāmāsa sarvalokapitāmahaḥ.
16. tataḥ pitāmahaḥ sākṣāt abhigamya mahāsurau
vareṇa chandayāmāsa sarvalokapitāmahaḥ
16. Then, the Grandfather (Brahmā) himself, the progenitor of all worlds, directly approached the two great demons (mahāsura) and offered them a boon.
ततः सुन्दोपसुन्दौ तौ भ्रातरौ दृढविक्रमौ ।
दृष्ट्वा पितामहं देवं तस्थतुः प्राञ्जली तदा ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ sundopasundau tau bhrātarau dṛḍhavikramau ,
dṛṣṭvā pitāmahaṁ devaṁ tasthatuḥ prāñjalī tadā.
17. tataḥ sundopasundau tau bhrātarau dṛḍhavikramau
dṛṣṭvā pitāmahaṃ devaṃ tasthatuḥ prāñjalī tadā
17. Then, those two brothers, Sunda and Upasunda, mighty and resolute, upon seeing the god, the Grandfather (Brahma), stood there with folded hands.
ऊचतुश्च प्रभुं देवं ततस्तौ सहितौ तदा ।
आवयोस्तपसानेन यदि प्रीतः पितामहः ॥१८॥
18. ūcatuśca prabhuṁ devaṁ tatastau sahitau tadā ,
āvayostapasānena yadi prītaḥ pitāmahaḥ.
18. ūcatuḥ ca prabhuṃ devaṃ tataḥ tau sahitau tadā
āvayoḥ tapasā anena yadi prītaḥ pitāmahaḥ
18. And then, those two, together, spoke to the Lord, the god (Brahma): "If the Grandfather (Brahma) is pleased by this spiritual discipline (tapas) of ours..."
मायाविदावस्त्रविदौ बलिनौ कामरूपिणौ ।
उभावप्यमरौ स्यावः प्रसन्नो यदि नौ प्रभुः ॥१९॥
19. māyāvidāvastravidau balinau kāmarūpiṇau ,
ubhāvapyamarau syāvaḥ prasanno yadi nau prabhuḥ.
19. māyāvidau astravidau balinau kāmarūpiṇau ubhau
api amarau syāvaḥ prasannaḥ yadi nau prabhuḥ
19. Let us both be adept in illusion (māyā) and weapons, powerful, capable of assuming any form at will, and immortal, if the Lord is pleased with us.
पितामह उवाच ।
ऋतेऽमरत्वमन्यद्वां सर्वमुक्तं भविष्यति ।
अन्यद्वृणीतां मृत्योश्च विधानममरैः समम् ॥२०॥
20. pitāmaha uvāca ,
ṛte'maratvamanyadvāṁ sarvamuktaṁ bhaviṣyati ,
anyadvṛṇītāṁ mṛtyośca vidhānamamaraiḥ samam.
20. pitāmahaḥ uvāca ṛte amarattvam anyat vāṃ sarvam uktaṃ
bhaviṣyati anyat vṛṇītām mṛtyoḥ ca vidhānam amaraiḥ samam
20. The Grandfather (Brahma) said, "Everything else you two have asked for, except immortality, will be granted. As for death, choose a provision for it that is equivalent to that of the immortals."
करिष्यावेदमिति यन्महदभ्युत्थितं तपः ।
युवयोर्हेतुनानेन नामरत्वं विधीयते ॥२१॥
21. kariṣyāvedamiti yanmahadabhyutthitaṁ tapaḥ ,
yuvayorhetunānena nāmaratvaṁ vidhīyate.
21. kariṣyāvaḥ idam iti yat mahat abhyutthitaṃ tapaḥ
yuvayoḥ hetunā anena na amarattvam vidhīyate
21. Due to this great spiritual discipline (tapas) that you two have performed, (thinking) 'we shall accomplish this', immortality cannot be granted.
त्रैलोक्यविजयार्थाय भवद्भ्यामास्थितं तपः ।
हेतुनानेन दैत्येन्द्रौ न वां कामं करोम्यहम् ॥२२॥
22. trailokyavijayārthāya bhavadbhyāmāsthitaṁ tapaḥ ,
hetunānena daityendrau na vāṁ kāmaṁ karomyaham.
22. trailokyavijayārthāya bhavadbhyām āsthitam tapas
hetunā anena daityendrau na vām kāmam karomi aham
22. Because you two have undertaken severe austerity (tapas) for the sake of conquering the three worlds, O kings of the demons, I am unable to grant you your desired boon.
सुन्दोपसुन्दावूचतुः ।
त्रिषु लोकेषु यद्भूतं किंचित्स्थावरजङ्गमम् ।
सर्वस्मान्नौ भयं न स्यादृतेऽन्योन्यं पितामह ॥२३॥
23. sundopasundāvūcatuḥ ,
triṣu lokeṣu yadbhūtaṁ kiṁcitsthāvarajaṅgamam ,
sarvasmānnau bhayaṁ na syādṛte'nyonyaṁ pitāmaha.
23. sunda-upasundau ūcatuḥ triṣu
lokeṣu yat bhūtam kiñcit
sthāvarajaṅgamam sarvasmāt nau bhayam
na syāt ṛte anyonyam pitāmaha
23. Sunda and Upasunda said: 'O Grandfather, let there be no fear for us from anything in the three worlds, whether moving or non-moving, except from each other.'
पितामह उवाच ।
यत्प्रार्थितं यथोक्तं च काममेतद्ददानि वाम् ।
मृत्योर्विधानमेतच्च यथावद्वां भविष्यति ॥२४॥
24. pitāmaha uvāca ,
yatprārthitaṁ yathoktaṁ ca kāmametaddadāni vām ,
mṛtyorvidhānametacca yathāvadvāṁ bhaviṣyati.
24. pitāmaha uvāca yat prārthitam yathā uktam ca kāmam etat
dadāni vām mṛtyoḥ vidhānam etat ca yathāvat vām bhaviṣyati
24. Grandfather Brahma said: 'I grant you this desire, just as it was requested and articulated. And this condition regarding death will indeed come to pass for you two exactly as stated.'
नारद उवाच ।
ततः पितामहो दत्त्वा वरमेतत्तदा तयोः ।
निवर्त्य तपसस्तौ च ब्रह्मलोकं जगाम ह ॥२५॥
25. nārada uvāca ,
tataḥ pitāmaho dattvā varametattadā tayoḥ ,
nivartya tapasastau ca brahmalokaṁ jagāma ha.
25. nārada uvāca tatas pitāmahaḥ dattvā varam etat tadā
tayoḥ nivartya tapasas tau ca brahmalokam jagāma ha
25. Nārada said: 'Then, Grandfather Brahma, having granted that boon to those two and having made them cease their austerity (tapas), indeed departed to Brahmaloka.'
लब्ध्वा वराणि सर्वाणि दैत्येन्द्रावपि तावुभौ ।
अवध्यौ सर्वलोकस्य स्वमेव भवनं गतौ ॥२६॥
26. labdhvā varāṇi sarvāṇi daityendrāvapi tāvubhau ,
avadhyau sarvalokasya svameva bhavanaṁ gatau.
26. labdhvā varāṇi sarvāṇi daityendrau api tau ubhau
avadhyau sarvalokasya svam eva bhavanam gatau
26. Having received all the boons, those two demon kings, now invulnerable to anyone in the entire world, returned to their own abode.
तौ तु लब्धवरौ दृष्ट्वा कृतकामौ महासुरौ ।
सर्वः सुहृज्जनस्ताभ्यां प्रमोदमुपजग्मिवान् ॥२७॥
27. tau tu labdhavarau dṛṣṭvā kṛtakāmau mahāsurau ,
sarvaḥ suhṛjjanastābhyāṁ pramodamupajagmivān.
27. tau tu labdhavarau dṛṣṭvā kṛtakāmau mahāsurau
sarvaḥ suhṛjjanaḥ tābhyām pramodam upajagmivān
27. Seeing those two great asuras, who had obtained boons and achieved their desires, all their friends experienced great joy because of them.
ततस्तौ तु जटा हित्वा मौलिनौ संबभूवतुः ।
महार्हाभरणोपेतौ विरजोम्बरधारिणौ ॥२८॥
28. tatastau tu jaṭā hitvā maulinau saṁbabhūvatuḥ ,
mahārhābharaṇopetau virajombaradhāriṇau.
28. tataḥ tau tu jaṭā hitvā maulinau sambabhūvatuḥ
mahārhābharaṇopetau virajombaradhāriṇau
28. Thereupon, those two, having given up their matted locks, became crowned, adorned with costly ornaments, and clad in spotless garments.
अकालकौमुदीं चैव चक्रतुः सार्वकामिकीम् ।
दैत्येन्द्रौ परमप्रीतौ तयोश्चैव सुहृज्जनः ॥२९॥
29. akālakaumudīṁ caiva cakratuḥ sārvakāmikīm ,
daityendrau paramaprītau tayoścaiva suhṛjjanaḥ.
29. akālakumudīm ca eva cakratuḥ sarvakāmikīm
daityendrau paramaprītau tayoḥ ca eva suhṛjjanaḥ
29. The two exceedingly pleased chiefs of the daityas, and their friends as well, then held an untimely lunar festival that fulfilled all desires.
भक्ष्यतां भुज्यतां नित्यं रम्यतां गीयतामिति ।
पीयतां दीयतां चेति वाच आसन्गृहे गृहे ॥३०॥
30. bhakṣyatāṁ bhujyatāṁ nityaṁ ramyatāṁ gīyatāmiti ,
pīyatāṁ dīyatāṁ ceti vāca āsangṛhe gṛhe.
30. bhakṣyatām bhujyatām nityam ramyatām gīyatām
iti pīyatām dīyatām ca iti vācaḥ āsan gṛhe gṛhe
30. "Let there be eating, let there be feasting, let there always be merriment and singing!" and "Let there be drinking and giving!" – such were the words heard in every house.
तत्र तत्र महापानैरुत्कृष्टतलनादितैः ।
हृष्टं प्रमुदितं सर्वं दैत्यानामभवत्पुरम् ॥३१॥
31. tatra tatra mahāpānairutkṛṣṭatalanāditaiḥ ,
hṛṣṭaṁ pramuditaṁ sarvaṁ daityānāmabhavatpuram.
31. tatra tatra mahāpānaiḥ utkṛṣṭatalanāditaiḥ
hṛṣṭam pramuditam sarvam daityānām abhavat puram
31. Here and there, with grand drinking festivities and loud shouts of revelry, the entire city of the daityas became joyous and greatly delighted.
तैस्तैर्विहारैर्बहुभिर्दैत्यानां कामरूपिणाम् ।
समाः संक्रीडतां तेषामहरेकमिवाभवत् ॥३२॥
32. taistairvihārairbahubhirdaityānāṁ kāmarūpiṇām ,
samāḥ saṁkrīḍatāṁ teṣāmaharekamivābhavat.
32. taiḥ taiḥ vihāraiḥ bahubhiḥ daityānām kāmarūpiṇām
samāḥ saṃkrīḍatām teṣām ahaḥ ekam iva abhavat
32. For those demons, who could assume any form at will, playing together with numerous such pastimes, many years passed as if they were a single day.
