शौनक उवाच ।
सर्पसत्रे तदा राज्ञः पाण्डवेयस्य धीमतः ।
जनमेजयस्य के त्वासन्नृत्विजः परमर्षयः ॥१॥

sarpasatre tadā rājñaḥ pāṇḍaveyasya dhīmataḥ ,
janamejayasya ke tvāsannṛtvijaḥ paramarṣayaḥ.

1. Śaunaka said: "Then, at the serpent sacrifice of the wise King Janamejaya, the son of Pāṇḍu, who, among the great sages, were the officiating priests?"
के सदस्या बभूवुश्च सर्पसत्रे सुदारुणे ।
विषादजननेऽत्यर्थं पन्नगानां महाभये ॥२॥
2. ke sadasyā babhūvuśca sarpasatre sudāruṇe ,
viṣādajanane'tyarthaṁ pannagānāṁ mahābhaye.

2. Who were the members in that very dreadful snake sacrifice, which caused immense despair and great fear for the snakes?
सर्वं विस्तरतस्तात भवाञ्शंसितुमर्हति ।
सर्पसत्रविधानज्ञा विज्ञेयास्ते हि सूतज ॥३॥
3. sarvaṁ vistaratastāta bhavāñśaṁsitumarhati ,
sarpasatravidhānajñā vijñeyāste hi sūtaja.
3. sarvam vistarataḥ tāta bhavān śaṃsitum arhati
sarpasatra-vidhānajñāḥ vijñeyāḥ te hi sūataja
3. O dear one, you should narrate everything in detail, for those who understood the procedures of that snake sacrifice, O Sūta's son, are indeed worthy of being known.
सूत उवाच ।
हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि नामानीह मनीषिणाम् ।
ये ऋत्विजः सदस्याश्च तस्यासन्नृपतेस्तदा ॥४॥
4. sūta uvāca ,
hanta te kathayiṣyāmi nāmānīha manīṣiṇām ,
ye ṛtvijaḥ sadasyāśca tasyāsannṛpatestadā.
4. sūtaḥ uvāca hanta te kathayiṣyāmi nāmāni iha manīṣiṇām
ye ṛtvijaḥ sadasyāḥ ca tasya āsan nṛpateḥ tadā
4. Sūta said: "Indeed, I shall now tell you the names of those wise persons who were the priests and members for that king at that time."
तत्र होता बभूवाथ ब्राह्मणश्चण्डभार्गवः ।
च्यवनस्यान्वये जातः ख्यातो वेदविदां वरः ॥५॥
5. tatra hotā babhūvātha brāhmaṇaścaṇḍabhārgavaḥ ,
cyavanasyānvaye jātaḥ khyāto vedavidāṁ varaḥ.
5. tatra hotā babhūva atha brāhmaṇaḥ caṇḍabhārgavaḥ
cyavanasya anvaye jātaḥ khyātaḥ vedavidām varaḥ
5. Thereupon, the Hotṛ priest was a Brahmin named Caṇḍabhārgava, born in the lineage of Cyavana, and renowned as the foremost among those who know the Vedas.
उद्गाता ब्राह्मणो वृद्धो विद्वान्कौत्सार्यजैमिनिः ।
ब्रह्माभवच्छार्ङ्गरवो अध्वर्युर्बोधपिङ्गलः ॥६॥
6. udgātā brāhmaṇo vṛddho vidvānkautsāryajaiminiḥ ,
brahmābhavacchārṅgaravo adhvaryurbodhapiṅgalaḥ.
6. udgātā brāhmaṇaḥ vṛddhaḥ vidvān kautsāryajaiminiḥ
brahmā abhavat śārṅgaravaḥ adhvaryuḥ bodhapiṅgalaḥ
6. The Udgātṛ priest was the aged and learned Brahmin Kautsārya Jaimini. Śārṅgarava was the Brahmā priest, and Bodhapiṅgala the Adhvaryu.
सदस्यश्चाभवद्व्यासः पुत्रशिष्यसहायवान् ।
उद्दालकः शमठकः श्वेतकेतुश्च पञ्चमः ॥७॥
7. sadasyaścābhavadvyāsaḥ putraśiṣyasahāyavān ,
uddālakaḥ śamaṭhakaḥ śvetaketuśca pañcamaḥ.
7. sadasyaḥ ca abhavat vyāsaḥ putraśiṣyasahāyavān
uddālakaḥ śamaṭhakaḥ śvetaketuḥ ca pañcamaḥ
7. Vyasa, accompanied by his sons and disciples, became a member of the assembly. Uddalaka, Shamaṭhaka, and Shvetaketu, who was the fifth (among the listed important members), were also present.
असितो देवलश्चैव नारदः पर्वतस्तथा ।
आत्रेयः कुण्डजठरो द्विजः कुटिघटस्तथा ॥८॥
8. asito devalaścaiva nāradaḥ parvatastathā ,
ātreyaḥ kuṇḍajaṭharo dvijaḥ kuṭighaṭastathā.
8. asitaḥ devalaḥ ca eva nāradaḥ parvataḥ tathā
ātreyaḥ kuṇḍajaṭharaḥ dvijaḥ kuṭighaṭaḥ tathā
8. Asita, Devala, Narada, Parvata, Atreya, Kuṇḍajaṭhara, and the brahmin Kuṭighaṭa were also present.
वात्स्यः श्रुतश्रवा वृद्धस्तपःस्वाध्यायशीलवान् ।
कहोडो देवशर्मा च मौद्गल्यः शमसौभरः ॥९॥
9. vātsyaḥ śrutaśravā vṛddhastapaḥsvādhyāyaśīlavān ,
kahoḍo devaśarmā ca maudgalyaḥ śamasaubharaḥ.
9. vātsyaḥ śrutaśravā vṛddhaḥ tapaḥsvādhyāyaśīlavān
kahoḍaḥ devaśarmā ca maudgalyaḥ śamasaubharaḥ
9. Vatsya, Śrutaśravas (who was old and devoted to penance and Vedic study), Kahoḍa, Devaśarmā, Maudgalya, and Śamasaubhara were also present.
एते चान्ये च बहवो ब्राह्मणाः संशितव्रताः ।
सदस्या अभवंस्तत्र सत्रे पारिक्षितस्य ह ॥१०॥
10. ete cānye ca bahavo brāhmaṇāḥ saṁśitavratāḥ ,
sadasyā abhavaṁstatra satre pārikṣitasya ha.
10. ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ saṃśitavratāḥ
sadasyāḥ abhavan tatra satre pārikṣitasya ha
10. These, and many other brahmins of firm vows, became members there, at the sacrifice of Parikshit.
जुह्वत्स्वृत्विक्ष्वथ तदा सर्पसत्रे महाक्रतौ ।
अहयः प्रापतंस्तत्र घोराः प्राणिभयावहाः ॥११॥
11. juhvatsvṛtvikṣvatha tadā sarpasatre mahākratau ,
ahayaḥ prāpataṁstatra ghorāḥ prāṇibhayāvahāḥ.
11. juhvatsu ṛtvikṣu atha tadā sarpasatre mahākratou
ahayaḥ prāpatan tatra ghorāḥ prāṇibhayāvahāḥ
11. Then, while the priests were offering oblations at that great Snake Sacrifice, terrible snakes, inspiring fear in all creatures, fell down there.
वसामेदोवहाः कुल्या नागानां संप्रवर्तिताः ।
ववौ गन्धश्च तुमुलो दह्यतामनिशं तदा ॥१२॥
12. vasāmedovahāḥ kulyā nāgānāṁ saṁpravartitāḥ ,
vavau gandhaśca tumulo dahyatāmaniśaṁ tadā.
12. vasāmedovahāḥ kulyāḥ nāgānām saṃpravartitāḥ
vavau gandhaḥ ca tumulaḥ dahyatām aniśam tadā
12. Then, channels carrying the fat and marrow of the serpents were made to flow, and a tremendous stench arose constantly from them as they were being burned.
पततां चैव नागानां धिष्ठितानां तथाम्बरे ।
अश्रूयतानिशं शब्दः पच्यतां चाग्निना भृशम् ॥१३॥
13. patatāṁ caiva nāgānāṁ dhiṣṭhitānāṁ tathāmbare ,
aśrūyatāniśaṁ śabdaḥ pacyatāṁ cāgninā bhṛśam.
13. patatām ca eva nāgānām dhiṣṭhitānām tathā ambare
aśrūyata aniśam śabdaḥ pacyatām ca agninā bhṛśam
13. And indeed, a constant sound was heard from the serpents that were falling and those stationed in the sky, as they were being fiercely cooked by fire.
तक्षकस्तु स नागेन्द्रः पुरंदरनिवेशनम् ।
गतः श्रुत्वैव राजानं दीक्षितं जनमेजयम् ॥१४॥
14. takṣakastu sa nāgendraḥ puraṁdaraniveśanam ,
gataḥ śrutvaiva rājānaṁ dīkṣitaṁ janamejayam.
14. takṣakaḥ tu saḥ nāgendraḥ purandaraniveśanam
gataḥ śrutvā eva rājānam dīkṣitam janamejayam
14. But that Takṣaka, the lord of serpents, went to the abode of Purandara (Indra) immediately upon hearing that King Janamejaya had been initiated for the sacrifice.
ततः सर्वं यथावृत्तमाख्याय भुजगोत्तमः ।
अगच्छच्छरणं भीत आगस्कृत्वा पुरंदरम् ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ sarvaṁ yathāvṛttamākhyāya bhujagottamaḥ ,
agacchaccharaṇaṁ bhīta āgaskṛtvā puraṁdaram.
15. tataḥ sarvam yathāvṛttam ākhyāya bhujagottamaḥ
agacchat śaraṇam bhītaḥ āgaḥ kṛtvā purandaram
15. Then, that best of serpents, having recounted everything that had occurred, went, frightened and having committed a fault, to Purandara (Indra) for refuge.
तमिन्द्रः प्राह सुप्रीतो न तवास्तीह तक्षक ।
भयं नागेन्द्र तस्माद्वै सर्पसत्रात्कथंचन ॥१६॥
16. tamindraḥ prāha suprīto na tavāstīha takṣaka ,
bhayaṁ nāgendra tasmādvai sarpasatrātkathaṁcana.
16. tam indraḥ prāha suprītaḥ na tava asti iha takṣaka
bhayam nāgendra tasmāt vai sarpasatrāt kathaṃcana
16. Indra, greatly pleased, then said to him: 'O Takṣaka, O lord of serpents, there is absolutely no fear for you here from that serpent-sacrifice.'
प्रसादितो मया पूर्वं तवार्थाय पितामहः ।
तस्मात्तव भयं नास्ति व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥१७॥
17. prasādito mayā pūrvaṁ tavārthāya pitāmahaḥ ,
tasmāttava bhayaṁ nāsti vyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ.
17. prasāditaḥ mayā pūrvam tava arthāya pitāmahaḥ
tasmāt tava bhayam na asti vyetu te mānasaḥ jvaraḥ
17. Formerly, Brahmā was propitiated by me for your sake. Therefore, you have no fear, and let your mental anguish depart.
एवमाश्वासितस्तेन ततः स भुजगोत्तमः ।
उवास भवने तत्र शक्रस्य मुदितः सुखी ॥१८॥
18. evamāśvāsitastena tataḥ sa bhujagottamaḥ ,
uvāsa bhavane tatra śakrasya muditaḥ sukhī.
18. evam āśvāsitaḥ tena tataḥ saḥ bhujagottamaḥ
uvāsa bhavane tatra śakrasya muditaḥ sukhī
18. Thus consoled by him, that best of serpents then dwelt happily and joyfully in Indra's palace.
अजस्रं निपतत्स्वग्नौ नागेषु भृशदुःखितः ।
अल्पशेषपरीवारो वासुकिः पर्यतप्यत ॥१९॥
19. ajasraṁ nipatatsvagnau nāgeṣu bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ ,
alpaśeṣaparīvāro vāsukiḥ paryatapyata.
19. ajasram nipatatsu agnau nāgeṣu bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ
alpaśeṣaparīvāraḥ vāsukiḥ paryatapyata
19. As the serpents constantly fell into the fire, Vāsuki, whose retinue was greatly diminished, became deeply distressed and grieved.
कश्मलं चाविशद्घोरं वासुकिं पन्नगेश्वरम् ।
स घूर्णमानहृदयो भगिनीमिदमब्रवीत् ॥२०॥
20. kaśmalaṁ cāviśadghoraṁ vāsukiṁ pannageśvaram ,
sa ghūrṇamānahṛdayo bhaginīmidamabravīt.
20. kaśmalam ca āviśat ghoram vāsukim pannageśvaram
saḥ ghūrṇamānahṛdayaḥ bhaginīm idam abravīt
20. And a terrible faintness entered Vāsuki, the lord of serpents. With a swirling heart, he said this to his sister.
दह्यन्तेऽङ्गानि मे भद्रे दिशो न प्रतिभान्ति च ।
सीदामीव च संमोहाद्घूर्णतीव च मे मनः ॥२१॥
21. dahyante'ṅgāni me bhadre diśo na pratibhānti ca ,
sīdāmīva ca saṁmohādghūrṇatīva ca me manaḥ.
21. dahyante aṅgāni me bhadre diśaḥ na pratibhānti ca
sīdāmi iva ca sammohāt ghūrṇati iva ca me manaḥ
21. My limbs are burning, O auspicious one, and the directions are no longer clear to me. I seem to be sinking into confusion, and my mind feels as if it is whirling.
दृष्टिर्भ्रमति मेऽतीव हृदयं दीर्यतीव च ।
पतिष्याम्यवशोऽद्याहं तस्मिन्दीप्ते विभावसौ ॥२२॥
22. dṛṣṭirbhramati me'tīva hṛdayaṁ dīryatīva ca ,
patiṣyāmyavaśo'dyāhaṁ tasmindīpte vibhāvasau.
22. dṛṣṭiḥ bhramati me atīva hṛdayam dīryati iva ca
patiṣyāmi avaśaḥ adya aham tasmin dīpte vibhāvasau
22. My vision is exceedingly blurred, and my heart feels as if it is tearing apart. Helpless, I shall now fall into that blazing fire.
पारिक्षितस्य यज्ञोऽसौ वर्ततेऽस्मज्जिघांसया ।
व्यक्तं मयापि गन्तव्यं पितृराजनिवेशनम् ॥२३॥
23. pārikṣitasya yajño'sau vartate'smajjighāṁsayā ,
vyaktaṁ mayāpi gantavyaṁ pitṛrājaniveśanam.
23. pārikṣitasya yajñaḥ asau vartate asmat jighāṃsayā
vyaktam mayā api gantavyam pitṛrājaniveśanam
23. This sacrifice of Parikṣit is being performed with the intent of killing us. Clearly, I too must go to the abode of the serpent-king.
अयं स कालः संप्राप्तो यदर्थमसि मे स्वसः ।
जरत्कारोः पुरा दत्ता सा त्राह्यस्मान्सबान्धवान् ॥२४॥
24. ayaṁ sa kālaḥ saṁprāpto yadarthamasi me svasaḥ ,
jaratkāroḥ purā dattā sā trāhyasmānsabāndhavān.
24. ayam sa kālaḥ samprāptaḥ yat artham asi me svasaḥ
jaratkāroḥ purā dattā sā trāhi asmān sabāndhavān
24. O my sister, that time has now arrived for which you were destined for me. You were given to Jaratkāru long ago. Therefore, protect us and our relatives!
आस्तीकः किल यज्ञं तं वर्तन्तं भुजगोत्तमे ।
प्रतिषेत्स्यति मां पूर्वं स्वयमाह पितामहः ॥२५॥
25. āstīkaḥ kila yajñaṁ taṁ vartantaṁ bhujagottame ,
pratiṣetsyati māṁ pūrvaṁ svayamāha pitāmahaḥ.
25. āstīkaḥ kila yajñam tam vartantam bhujagottame
pratiṣetsyati mām pūrvam svayam āha pitāmahaḥ
25. O best of serpents, it is said that Āstīka will stop that ongoing sacrifice. My grandfather himself told me earlier that he would save me first.
तद्वत्से ब्रूहि वत्सं स्वं कुमारं वृद्धसंमतम् ।
ममाद्य त्वं सभृत्यस्य मोक्षार्थं वेदवित्तमम् ॥२६॥
26. tadvatse brūhi vatsaṁ svaṁ kumāraṁ vṛddhasaṁmatam ,
mamādya tvaṁ sabhṛtyasya mokṣārthaṁ vedavittamam.
26. tat vatse brūhi vatsam svam kumāram vṛddhasaṃmatam
mama adya tvam sabhṛtyasya mokṣa artham vedavittamam
26. Therefore, O dear child, tell your own son, the prince, who is respected by elders and most learned in the Vedas, to secure the liberation of me and my servants today.
