Bṛhadaśva spoke: When Nala, along with his wife, had lost his kingdom and gone away, Bhīma dispatched Brahmins, motivated by the desire to see Nala.

3.
When this task is completed and the king of Niṣadha is identified, I will give to you (Brahmins) a thousand cows, [as a reward for] whoever brings such a one. And I will also grant an "agrahāra" (grant of land to Brahmins), a village as prosperous as a city.

For a woman, her husband is truly the supreme ornament, even without any other adornments. This woman, deprived of him, does not shine, even though she is beautiful.

28.
O Queen, your father, mother, and brothers are well. Your two children, who remain there, are also well and blessed with long life. But because of you, your family members are as if lifeless.

29.
O Yudhiṣṭhira, Damayantī, having recognized Sudeva, then asked him about all her own friends, one by one.
30. ruroda ca bhṛśaṁ rājanvaidarbhī śokakarśitā ,

30.

dṛṣṭvā sudevaṃ sahasā bhrātuḥ iṣṭaṃ dvijottamam
30.
And Vaidarbhī, overcome with sorrow, wept profusely, O king, upon suddenly seeing Sudeva, the most excellent brahmin who was dear to her brother.

sudevena saha ekānte kathayantīṃ ca bhārata
31.
Then, O Bhārata, Sunandā, upon seeing her (Vaidarbhī) weeping and overcome with sorrow, and conversing with Sudeva in a secluded place...

32. janitryai preṣayāmāsa sairandhrī rudate bhṛśam ,

32.
janitryai preṣayāmāsa sairandhrī rudate bhṛśam
brāhmaṇena samāgamya tāṃ veda yadi manyase
brāhmaṇena samāgamya tāṃ veda yadi manyase
32.
Sairandhrī, profusely weeping, sent word to her mother, (the message was:) 'If you acknowledge (her identity), you will recognize her by meeting with this brahmin (Sudeva).'

33. atha cedipatermātā rājñaścāntaḥpurāttadā ,

33.

33.
Then, the mother of the king of Cedi, emerging from the royal inner chambers, went to the place where that maiden (Damayantī) was with the brahmin (Sudeva).

34. tataḥ sudevamānāyya rājamātā viśāṁ pate ,

34.

papraccha bhāryā kasya iyam sutā vā kasya bhāminī
34.
Then, O lord of the people, the queen mother, having summoned Sudeva, inquired, 'Whose wife is this woman, or whose daughter is this beautiful lady?'
35. kathaṁ ca naṣṭā jñātibhyo bharturvā vāmalocanā ,

tvayā ca viditā vipra katham evaṃgatā satī
tvayā ca viditā vipra katham evaṃgatā satī
35.
And how did this beautiful-eyed woman become separated from her relatives or her husband? O Brahmin, since you know her, how did she come to be in such a state?

36.
I wish to know all of this from you completely and truly. Therefore, please tell me, as I am asking, everything about this goddess-like woman.

37.

37.
Thus addressed by her, O King, Sudeva, that excellent Brahmin, being comfortably seated, began to recount the story of Damayantī exactly as it had happened.
