वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं प्रयतमानानां वृष्णीनामन्धकैः सह ।
कालो गृहाणि सर्वेषां परिचक्राम नित्यशः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ prayatamānānāṁ vṛṣṇīnāmandhakaiḥ saha ,
kālo gṛhāṇi sarveṣāṁ paricakrāma nityaśaḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: As the Vrishnis and Andhakas were thus engaged in their efforts, time (kāla) constantly circled the homes of all of them.
करालो विकटो मुण्डः पुरुषः कृष्णपिङ्गलः ।
गृहाण्यवेक्ष्य वृष्णीनां नादृश्यत पुनः क्वचित् ॥२॥
2. karālo vikaṭo muṇḍaḥ puruṣaḥ kṛṣṇapiṅgalaḥ ,
gṛhāṇyavekṣya vṛṣṇīnāṁ nādṛśyata punaḥ kvacit.
2. karālaḥ vikaṭaḥ muṇḍaḥ puruṣaḥ kṛṣṇapiṅgalaḥ
gṛhāṇi avekṣya vṛṣṇīnām na adṛśyata punaḥ kvacit
2. A formidable, huge, bald-headed, blackish-brown man, after having observed the homes of the Vrishnis, was then nowhere to be seen again.
उत्पेदिरे महावाता दारुणाश्चा दिने दिने ।
वृष्ण्यन्धकविनाशाय बहवो रोमहर्षणाः ॥३॥
3. utpedire mahāvātā dāruṇāścā dine dine ,
vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya bahavo romaharṣaṇāḥ.

3. Great, dreadful, and hair-raising winds arose day by day for the annihilation of the Vrishnis and Andhakas.
विवृद्धमूषका रथ्या विभिन्नमणिकास्तथा ।
चीचीकूचीति वाश्यन्त्यः सारिका वृष्णिवेश्मसु ।
नोपशाम्यति शब्दश्च स दिवारात्रमेव हि ॥४॥
4. vivṛddhamūṣakā rathyā vibhinnamaṇikāstathā ,
cīcīkūcīti vāśyantyaḥ sārikā vṛṣṇiveśmasu ,
nopaśāmyati śabdaśca sa divārātrameva hi.
4. vivṛddhamūṣakāḥ rathyāḥ vibhinnamaṇikāḥ
tathā cīcīkūcī iti vāśyantyaḥ
sārikāḥ vṛṣṇiveśmasu na upaśāmyati
śabdaḥ ca saḥ divārātram eva hi
4. Rampant street-dwelling mice and broken pitchers (maṇikā) [were seen everywhere]; and mynah birds chirped "chee-chee-koo-chee" in the Vrishni residences. That sound, indeed, did not cease day and night.
अनुकुर्वन्नुलूकानां सारसा विरुतं तथा ।
अजाः शिवानां च रुतमन्वकुर्वत भारत ॥५॥
5. anukurvannulūkānāṁ sārasā virutaṁ tathā ,
ajāḥ śivānāṁ ca rutamanvakurvata bhārata.
5. anukurvan ulūkānām sārasāḥ virutam tathā
ajāḥ śivānām ca rutam anvakurvata bhārata
5. bhārata sārasāḥ ulūkānām virutam anukurvan
tathā ajāḥ śivānām rutam ca anvakurvata
5. O Bhārata, the cranes mimicked the cries of owls, and similarly, goats mimicked the cries of jackals.
पाण्डुरा रक्तपादाश्च विहगाः कालचोदिताः ।
वृष्ण्यन्धकानां गेहेषु कपोता व्यचरंस्तदा ॥६॥
6. pāṇḍurā raktapādāśca vihagāḥ kālacoditāḥ ,
vṛṣṇyandhakānāṁ geheṣu kapotā vyacaraṁstadā.
6. pāṇḍurāḥ raktapādāḥ ca vihagāḥ kālacoditāḥ
vṛṣṇyandhakānām geheṣu kapotāḥ vyacaran tadā
6. tadā kālacoditāḥ pāṇḍurāḥ raktapādāḥ vihagāḥ
ca kapotāḥ vṛṣṇyandhakānām geheṣu vyacaran
6. White-bodied, red-footed birds, driven by fate (kāla), and pigeons then roamed about in the houses of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas.
व्यजायन्त खरा गोषु करभाश्वतरीषु च ।
शुनीष्वपि बिडालाश्च मूषका नकुलीषु च ॥७॥
7. vyajāyanta kharā goṣu karabhāśvatarīṣu ca ,
śunīṣvapi biḍālāśca mūṣakā nakulīṣu ca.
7. vyajāyanta kharāḥ goṣu karabhāḥ aśvatarīṣu
ca śunīṣu api biḍālāḥ ca mūṣakāḥ nakulīṣu ca
7. kharāḥ goṣu ca karabhāḥ aśvatarīṣu api ca
biḍālāḥ śunīṣu ca mūṣakāḥ nakulīṣu vyajāyanta
7. Donkeys were born among cows, camels among she-mules, cats among female dogs, and mice among mongooses.
नापत्रपन्त पापानि कुर्वन्तो वृष्णयस्तदा ।
प्राद्विषन्ब्राह्मणांश्चापि पितॄन्देवांस्तथैव च ॥८॥
8. nāpatrapanta pāpāni kurvanto vṛṣṇayastadā ,
prādviṣanbrāhmaṇāṁścāpi pitṝndevāṁstathaiva ca.
8. na apatrapanta pāpāni kurvantaḥ vṛṣṇayaḥ tadā
prādviṣan brāhmaṇān ca api pitṝn devān tathā eva ca
8. tadā vṛṣṇayaḥ pāpāni kurvantaḥ na apatrapanta api
ca brāhmaṇān pitṝn ca tathā eva devān prādviṣan
8. At that time, the Vṛṣṇis, performing sinful acts, felt no shame. Moreover, they hated Brahmins, ancestors, and likewise the gods.
गुरूंश्चाप्यवमन्यन्त न तु रामजनार्दनौ ।
पत्न्यः पतीन्व्युच्चरन्त पत्नीश्च पतयस्तथा ॥९॥
9. gurūṁścāpyavamanyanta na tu rāmajanārdanau ,
patnyaḥ patīnvyuccaranta patnīśca patayastathā.
9. gurūn ca api avamanyanta na tu rāmajanārdanau
patnyaḥ patīn vyuccaranta patnīḥ ca patayaḥ tathā
9. api gurūn ca avamanyanta na tu rāmajanārdanau
patnyaḥ patīn vyuccaranta ca patayaḥ tathā patnīḥ
9. People even disrespected their spiritual teachers (guru), but not Rāma and Janārdana. Wives abandoned their husbands, and husbands likewise abandoned their wives.
विभावसुः प्रज्वलितो वामं विपरिवर्तते ।
नीललोहितमाञ्जिष्ठा विसृजन्नर्चिषः पृथक् ॥१०॥
10. vibhāvasuḥ prajvalito vāmaṁ viparivartate ,
nīlalohitamāñjiṣṭhā visṛjannarciṣaḥ pṛthak.
10. vibhāvasuḥ prajvalitaḥ vāmam viparivartate
nīlalohitamāñjiṣṭhā visṛjan arciṣaḥ pṛthak
10. prajvalitaḥ vibhāvasuḥ vāmam viparivartate
nīlalohitamāñjiṣṭhā arciṣaḥ pṛthak visṛjan
10. The blazing fire (Agni) turned to the left (clockwise), emitting distinct flames of blue, red, and madder colors.
उदयास्तमने नित्यं पुर्यां तस्यां दिवाकरः ।
व्यदृश्यतासकृत्पुंभिः कबन्धैः परिवारितः ॥११॥
11. udayāstamane nityaṁ puryāṁ tasyāṁ divākaraḥ ,
vyadṛśyatāsakṛtpuṁbhiḥ kabandhaiḥ parivāritaḥ.
11. udayāstamane nityam puryām tasyām divākaraḥ
vyadṛśyata asakṛt pumbhiḥ kabandhaiḥ parivāritaḥ
11. tasyām puryām nityam udayāstamane divākaraḥ
asakṛt pumbhiḥ kabandhaiḥ parivāritaḥ vyadṛśyata
11. In that city, at sunrise and sunset, the sun was constantly and repeatedly seen by men, surrounded by headless torsos (kabandha).
महानसेषु सिद्धेऽन्ने संस्कृतेऽतीव भारत ।
आहार्यमाणे कृमयो व्यदृश्यन्त नराधिप ॥१२॥
12. mahānaseṣu siddhe'nne saṁskṛte'tīva bhārata ,
āhāryamāṇe kṛmayo vyadṛśyanta narādhipa.
12. mahānaseṣu siddhe anne saṃskṛte atīva bhārata
āhāryamāṇe kṛmayaḥ vyadṛśyanta narādhipa
12. bhārata narādhipa mahānaseṣu atīva saṃskṛte
siddhe anne āhāryamāṇe kṛmayaḥ vyadṛśyanta
12. O Bhārata, O king of men, in the great kitchens, even in the very well-prepared and cooked food, as it was being served, worms were seen.
पुण्याहे वाच्यमाने च जपत्सु च महात्मसु ।
अभिधावन्तः श्रूयन्ते न चादृश्यत कश्चन ॥१३॥
13. puṇyāhe vācyamāne ca japatsu ca mahātmasu ,
abhidhāvantaḥ śrūyante na cādṛśyata kaścana.
13. puṇyāhe vācyamāne ca japatsu ca mahātmasu
abhidhāvantaḥ śrūyante na ca adṛśyata kaścana
13. While auspicious day rites were being announced and great souls were chanting, sounds of rushing were heard, yet no one was actually seen.
परस्परं च नक्षत्रं हन्यमानं पुनः पुनः ।
ग्रहैरपश्यन्सर्वे ते नात्मनस्तु कथंचन ॥१४॥
14. parasparaṁ ca nakṣatraṁ hanyamānaṁ punaḥ punaḥ ,
grahairapaśyansarve te nātmanastu kathaṁcana.
14. parasparam ca nakṣatram hanyamānam punaḥ punaḥ
grahaiḥ apaśyan sarve te na ātmanaḥ tu kathaṃcana
14. They all observed the constellations being repeatedly struck by planets, but by no means did they see their own stars (ātman) being afflicted.
नदन्तं पाञ्चजन्यं च वृष्ण्यन्धकनिवेशने ।
समन्तात्प्रत्यवाश्यन्त रासभा दारुणस्वराः ॥१५॥
15. nadantaṁ pāñcajanyaṁ ca vṛṣṇyandhakaniveśane ,
samantātpratyavāśyanta rāsabhā dāruṇasvarāḥ.
15. nadantam pāñcajanyam ca vṛṣṇyandhakaniveśane
samantāt pratyavāśyanta rāsabhā dāruṇasvarāḥ
15. In the settlements of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, as the Pāñcajanya conch roared, dreadful-voiced donkeys brayed back from all sides.
एवं पश्यन्हृषीकेशः संप्राप्तं कालपर्ययम् ।
त्रयोदश्याममावास्यां तां दृष्ट्वा प्राब्रवीदिदम् ॥१६॥
16. evaṁ paśyanhṛṣīkeśaḥ saṁprāptaṁ kālaparyayam ,
trayodaśyāmamāvāsyāṁ tāṁ dṛṣṭvā prābravīdidam.
16. evam paśyan hṛṣīkeśaḥ samprāptam kālaparyayam
trayodaśyām amāvāsyām tām dṛṣṭvā prābravīt idam
16. Thus, Hṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa), observing the arrival of this critical juncture of time, and having seen that particular thirteenth day which was also a new moon (amāvāsyā), spoke the following words.
चतुर्दशी पञ्चदशी कृतेयं राहुणा पुनः ।
तदा च भारते युद्धे प्राप्ता चाद्य क्षयाय नः ॥१७॥
17. caturdaśī pañcadaśī kṛteyaṁ rāhuṇā punaḥ ,
tadā ca bhārate yuddhe prāptā cādya kṣayāya naḥ.
17. caturdaśī pañcadaśī kṛtā iyam rāhuṇā punaḥ tadā
ca bhārate yuddhe prāptā ca adya kṣayāya naḥ
17. iyam caturdaśī pañcadaśī rāhuṇā punaḥ kṛtā ca tadā bhārate
yuddhe (yā) prāptā (āsīt) adya ca naḥ kṣayāya prāptā
17. The fourteenth and fifteenth (tithis) have been made into one by Rāhu again. And that very day, when the war in Bhārata took place, has now arrived for our annihilation.
विमृशन्नेव कालं तं परिचिन्त्य जनार्दनः ।
मेने प्राप्तं स षट्त्रिंशं वर्षं वै केशिसूदनः ॥१८॥
18. vimṛśanneva kālaṁ taṁ paricintya janārdanaḥ ,
mene prāptaṁ sa ṣaṭtriṁśaṁ varṣaṁ vai keśisūdanaḥ.
18. vimṛśan eva kālam tam paricintya janārdanaḥ mene
prāptam saḥ ṣaṭtriṃśam varṣam vai keśisūdanaḥ
18. saḥ janārdanaḥ keśisūdanaḥ tam kālam vimṛśan eva paricintya,
ṣaṭtriṃśam varṣam prāptam mene vai
18. Lord Janārdana, the slayer of Keśin, pondering and reflecting on that time, realized that the thirty-sixth year had arrived.
पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्ता गान्धारी हतबान्धवा ।
यदनुव्याजहारार्ता तदिदं समुपागतम् ॥१९॥
19. putraśokābhisaṁtaptā gāndhārī hatabāndhavā ,
yadanuvyājahārārtā tadidaṁ samupāgatam.
19. putraśokābhisantaptā gāndhārī hatabāndhavā
yat anuvyājahāra ārtā tat idam samupāgatam
19. putraśokābhisantaptā hatabāndhavā ārtā
gāndhārī yat anuvyājahāra tat idam samupāgatam
19. Gāndhārī, scorched by the grief for her sons and bereft of kinsmen, had lamented in her anguish. That very thing which she had thus declared has now come to pass.
इदं च तदनुप्राप्तमब्रवीद्यद्युधिष्ठिरः ।
पुरा व्यूढेष्वनीकेषु दृष्ट्वोत्पातान्सुदारुणान् ॥२०॥
20. idaṁ ca tadanuprāptamabravīdyadyudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
purā vyūḍheṣvanīkeṣu dṛṣṭvotpātānsudāruṇān.
20. idam ca tat anuprāptam abravīt yat yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
purā vyūḍheṣu anīkeṣu dṛṣṭvā utpātān sudāruṇān
20. ca idam tat anuprāptam yat yudhiṣṭhiraḥ purā
vyūḍheṣu anīkeṣu sudāruṇān utpātān dṛṣṭvā abravīt
20. And this has also come to pass, what Yudhiṣṭhira said previously, having seen exceedingly terrible omens when the armies were arrayed.
इत्युक्त्वा वासुदेवस्तु चिकीर्षन्सत्यमेव तत् ।
आज्ञापयामास तदा तीर्थयात्रामरिंदम ॥२१॥
21. ityuktvā vāsudevastu cikīrṣansatyameva tat ,
ājñāpayāmāsa tadā tīrthayātrāmariṁdama.
21. iti uktvā vāsudevaḥ tu cikīrṣan satyam eva
tat ājñāpayāmāsa tadā tīrthayātrām arimdam
21. arimdam vāsudevaḥ tu iti uktvā tat satyam
eva cikīrṣan tadā tīrthayātrām ājñāpayāmāsa
21. Having spoken thus, Vāsudeva, intending to make that (prophecy) come true, then commanded a pilgrimage (tīrthayātrā), O subduer of foes.
अघोषयन्त पुरुषास्तत्र केशवशासनात् ।
तीर्थयात्रा समुद्रे वः कार्येति पुरुषर्षभाः ॥२२॥
22. aghoṣayanta puruṣāstatra keśavaśāsanāt ,
tīrthayātrā samudre vaḥ kāryeti puruṣarṣabhāḥ.
22. aghoṣayanta puruṣāḥ tatra keśavaśāsanāt
tīrthayātrā samudre vaḥ kāryā iti puruṣarṣabhāḥ
22. puruṣāḥ tatra keśavaśāsanāt puruṣarṣabhāḥ
vaḥ samudre tīrthayātrā kāryā iti aghoṣayanta
22. There, by Keśava's command, men proclaimed: 'A pilgrimage (tīrthayātrā) to the sea must be undertaken by you, O best among men!'
