काम्बोजं पश्य दुर्धर्षं काम्बोजास्तरणोचितम् ।
शयानमृषभस्कन्धं हतं पांसुशु माधव ॥१॥

1. Gāndhārī said: O Mādhava, behold the irresistible Kāmboja king, accustomed to Kāmboja coverings, with bull-like shoulders, lying slain in the dust.
यस्य क्षतजसंदिग्धौ बाहू चन्दनरूषितौ ।
अवेक्ष्य कृपणं भार्या विलपत्यतिदुःखिता ॥२॥
2. yasya kṣatajasaṁdigdhau bāhū candanarūṣitau ,
avekṣya kṛpaṇaṁ bhāryā vilapatyatiduḥkhitā.

2. His extremely distressed wife, seeing his two arms - which were once adorned with sandalwood but now appear stained with blood - laments piteously.
इमौ तौ परिघप्रख्यौ बाहू शुभतलाङ्गुली ।
ययोर्विवरमापन्नां न रतिर्मां पुराजहत् ॥३॥
3. imau tau parighaprakhyau bāhū śubhatalāṅgulī ,
yayorvivaramāpannāṁ na ratirmāṁ purājahat.

3. These are those very arms, strong as iron bars and possessing beautiful palms and fingers. Formerly, when I rested within their embrace, pleasure (rati) never abandoned me.
कां गतिं नु गमिष्यामि त्वया हीना जनेश्वर ।
दूरबन्धुरनाथेव अतीव मधुरस्वरा ॥४॥
4. kāṁ gatiṁ nu gamiṣyāmi tvayā hīnā janeśvara ,
dūrabandhuranātheva atīva madhurasvarā.

4. O lord of people, deprived of you, what destiny indeed shall I attain? I shall become like an orphan, with distant relatives and no protector, despite my exceedingly sweet voice.
आतपे क्लाम्यमानानां विविधानामिव स्रजाम् ।
क्लान्तानामपि नारीणां न श्रीर्जहति वै तनुम् ॥५॥
5. ātape klāmyamānānāṁ vividhānāmiva srajām ,
klāntānāmapi nārīṇāṁ na śrīrjahati vai tanum.

5. Just as the freshness of various garlands wilting in the sun does not abandon their form, similarly, even for exhausted women, beauty (śrī) indeed does not abandon their body.
शयानमभितः शूरं कालिङ्गं मधुसूदन ।
पश्य दीप्ताङ्गदयुगप्रतिबद्धमहाभुजम् ॥६॥
6. śayānamabhitaḥ śūraṁ kāliṅgaṁ madhusūdana ,
paśya dīptāṅgadayugapratibaddhamahābhujam.

6. O Madhusūdana, behold the brave Kalinga king lying nearby, whose mighty arms are adorned with a pair of shining armlets.
मागधानामधिपतिं जयत्सेनं जनार्दन ।
परिवार्य प्ररुदिता मागध्यः पश्य योषितः ॥७॥
7. māgadhānāmadhipatiṁ jayatsenaṁ janārdana ,
parivārya praruditā māgadhyaḥ paśya yoṣitaḥ.

7. O Janārdana, behold the women of Magadha, who are weeping aloud, having surrounded Jayatsena, the ruler of the Magadhas.
आसामायतनेत्राणां सुस्वराणां जनार्दन ।
मनःश्रुतिहरो नादो मनो मोहयतीव मे ॥८॥
8. āsāmāyatanetrāṇāṁ susvarāṇāṁ janārdana ,
manaḥśrutiharo nādo mano mohayatīva me.
8. āsām āyataneṣṭrāṇām susvarāṇām janārdana
manaḥśrutiharaḥ nādaḥ manaḥ mohayati iva me

8. O Janārdana, the sound (or wailing) of these long-eyed, sweet-voiced women, which steals away the mind and hearing, seems to bewilder my mind.
प्रकीर्णसर्वाभरणा रुदन्त्यः शोककर्शिताः ।
स्वास्तीर्णशयनोपेता मागध्यः शेरते भुवि ॥९॥
9. prakīrṇasarvābharaṇā rudantyaḥ śokakarśitāḥ ,
svāstīrṇaśayanopetā māgadhyaḥ śerate bhuvi.

9. The Magadha women, with all their ornaments scattered, weeping and emaciated by grief, lie on the ground upon their well-spread beds.
कोसलानामधिपतिं राजपुत्रं बृहद्बलम् ।
भर्तारं परिवार्यैताः पृथक्प्ररुदिताः स्त्रियः ॥१०॥
10. kosalānāmadhipatiṁ rājaputraṁ bṛhadbalam ,
bhartāraṁ parivāryaitāḥ pṛthakpraruditāḥ striyaḥ.
10. kosalānām adhipatim rājaputram bṛhadbalam
bhartāram parivārya etāḥ pṛthak praruditāḥ striyaḥ

10. These women, surrounding their husband, the prince Bṛhadbala, who was the lord of the Kośalas, cried separately.
अस्य गात्रगतान्बाणान्कार्ष्णिबाहुबलार्पितान् ।
उद्धरन्त्यसुखाविष्टा मूर्छमानाः पुनः पुनः ॥११॥
11. asya gātragatānbāṇānkārṣṇibāhubalārpitān ,
uddharantyasukhāviṣṭā mūrchamānāḥ punaḥ punaḥ.

11. Distressed and repeatedly fainting, they are pulling out the arrows that are embedded in his body, which were lodged there by the strength of Kṛṣṇa's son's arm.
आसां सर्वानवद्यानामातपेन परिश्रमात् ।
प्रम्लाननलिनाभानि भान्ति वक्त्राणि माधव ॥१२॥
12. āsāṁ sarvānavadyānāmātapena pariśramāt ,
pramlānanalinābhāni bhānti vaktrāṇi mādhava.
12. āsām sarvānavadyānām ātāpena pariśramāt
pramlānanālinābhāni bhānti vaktrāṇi mādhava
12. mādhava āsām sarvānavadyānām ātāpena

12. O Mādhava, the faces of all these faultless women, which resemble withered lotuses, glow due to their exhaustion from the sun's heat.
द्रोणेन निहताः शूराः शेरते रुचिराङ्गदाः ।
द्रोणेनाभिमुखाः सर्वे भ्रातरः पञ्च केकयाः ॥१३॥
13. droṇena nihatāḥ śūrāḥ śerate rucirāṅgadāḥ ,
droṇenābhimukhāḥ sarve bhrātaraḥ pañca kekayāḥ.

droṇena abhimukhāḥ sarve bhrātaraḥ pañca kekayāḥ

13. The heroic warriors, slain by Droṇa, who wore shining armlets, lie (dead). All five Kekaya brothers, who confronted Droṇa, also lie (dead).
तप्तकाञ्चनवर्माणस्ताम्रध्वजरथस्रजः ।
भासयन्ति महीं भासा ज्वलिता इव पावकाः ॥१४॥
14. taptakāñcanavarmāṇastāmradhvajarathasrajaḥ ,
bhāsayanti mahīṁ bhāsā jvalitā iva pāvakāḥ.

14. With armors of molten gold and copper-colored banners, chariots, and garlands, they illuminate the earth with their brilliance, just like blazing fires.
द्रोणेन द्रुपदं संख्ये पश्य माधव पातितम् ।
महाद्विपमिवारण्ये सिंहेन महता हतम् ॥१५॥
15. droṇena drupadaṁ saṁkhye paśya mādhava pātitam ,
mahādvipamivāraṇye siṁhena mahatā hatam.

15. O Mādhava, behold Drupada struck down in battle by Droṇa, like a great elephant slain in the forest by a mighty lion.
पाञ्चालराज्ञो विपुलं पुण्डरीकाक्ष पाण्डुरम् ।
आतपत्रं समाभाति शरदीव दिवाकरः ॥१६॥
16. pāñcālarājño vipulaṁ puṇḍarīkākṣa pāṇḍuram ,
ātapatraṁ samābhāti śaradīva divākaraḥ.

ātatpatraṃ samābhāti śaradi iva divākaraḥ

16. O lotus-eyed one (puṇḍarīkākṣa), the vast, white sunshade of the Pañcāla king shines brightly, like the sun in autumn.
एतास्तु द्रुपदं वृद्धं स्नुषा भार्याश्च दुःखिताः ।
दग्ध्वा गच्छन्ति पाञ्चाल्यं राजानमपसव्यतः ॥१७॥
17. etāstu drupadaṁ vṛddhaṁ snuṣā bhāryāśca duḥkhitāḥ ,
dagdhvā gacchanti pāñcālyaṁ rājānamapasavyataḥ.
17. etāḥ tu drupadaṃ vṛddhaṃ snuṣāḥ bhāryāḥ ca duḥkhitāḥ
dagdhvā gacchanti pāñcālyaṃ rājānam apasavyataḥ

17. Indeed, these distressed daughters-in-law and wives, having cremated the aged Drupada, proceed to King Pāñcālya, performing a counter-clockwise circumambulation.
धृष्टकेतुं महेष्वासं चेदिपुंगवमङ्गनाः ।
द्रोणेन निहतं शूरं हरन्ति हृतचेतसः ॥१८॥
18. dhṛṣṭaketuṁ maheṣvāsaṁ cedipuṁgavamaṅganāḥ ,
droṇena nihataṁ śūraṁ haranti hṛtacetasaḥ.
18. dhṛṣṭaketum maheṣvāsam cedipuṅgavam aṅganāḥ
droṇena nihatam śūram haranti hṛtacetasaḥ
18. aṅganāḥ hṛtacetasaḥ droṇena nihatam maheṣvāsam
cedipuṅgavam śūram dhṛṣṭaketum haranti
18. The women, their minds distraught, carry away the hero Dhṛṣṭaketu, the great archer and foremost among the Cedis, who was slain by Droṇa.
द्रोणास्त्रमभिहत्यैष विमर्दे मधुसूदन ।
महेष्वासो हतः शेते नद्या हृत इव द्रुमः ॥१९॥
19. droṇāstramabhihatyaiṣa vimarde madhusūdana ,
maheṣvāso hataḥ śete nadyā hṛta iva drumaḥ.

maheṣvāsaḥ hataḥ śete nadyā hṛtaḥ iva drumaḥ

19. O Madhusūdana, this great archer, having been struck down by Droṇa's weapon in the conflict, lies killed, just like a tree swept away by a river.
एष चेदिपतिः शूरो धृष्टकेतुर्महारथः ।
शेते विनिहतः संख्ये हत्वा शत्रून्सहस्रशः ॥२०॥
20. eṣa cedipatiḥ śūro dhṛṣṭaketurmahārathaḥ ,
śete vinihataḥ saṁkhye hatvā śatrūnsahasraśaḥ.
20. eṣa cedipatiḥ śūraḥ dhṛṣṭaketuḥ mahārathaḥ
śete vinihataḥ saṃkhye hatvā śatrūn sahasraśaḥ
20. eṣa śūraḥ cedipatiḥ mahārathaḥ dhṛṣṭaketuḥ
saṃkhye sahasraśaḥ śatrūn hatvā vinihataḥ śete
20. This hero Dhṛṣṭaketu, the lord of the Cedis and a great charioteer, lies completely slain in battle, having himself killed thousands of enemies.
वितुद्यमानं विहगैस्तं भार्याः प्रत्युपस्थिताः ।
चेदिराजं हृषीकेश हतं सबलबान्धवम् ॥२१॥
21. vitudyamānaṁ vihagaistaṁ bhāryāḥ pratyupasthitāḥ ,
cedirājaṁ hṛṣīkeśa hataṁ sabalabāndhavam.

cedirājam hṛṣīkeśa hatam sabalabāndhavam
21. hṛṣīkeśa bhāryāḥ vihagaiḥ vitudyamānam

21. O Hṛṣīkeśa, his wives have come to stand before him, the King of Cedis, who lies slain along with his forces and kinsmen, and is being torn at by birds.
दाशार्हीपुत्रजं वीरं शयानं सत्यविक्रमम् ।
आरोप्याङ्के रुदन्त्येताश्चेदिराजवराङ्गनाः ॥२२॥
22. dāśārhīputrajaṁ vīraṁ śayānaṁ satyavikramam ,
āropyāṅke rudantyetāścedirājavarāṅganāḥ.

āropya aṅke rudanti etāḥ cedirājavarāṅganāḥ
22. etāḥ cedirājavarāṅganāḥ rudanti,
aṅke āropya,

22. These excellent wives of the Chedi king, weeping, placed upon their laps that truly valorous hero, the son of the Dāśārha woman (Subhadra), as he lay there.
अस्य पुत्रं हृषीकेश सुवक्त्रं चारुकुण्डलम् ।
द्रोणेन समरे पश्य निकृत्तं बहुधा शरैः ॥२३॥
23. asya putraṁ hṛṣīkeśa suvaktraṁ cārukuṇḍalam ,
droṇena samare paśya nikṛttaṁ bahudhā śaraiḥ.
23. asya putram hṛṣīkeśa suvaktram cārukuṇḍalam
droṇena samare paśya nikṛttam bahudhā śaraiḥ
23. hṛṣīkeśa,
paśya asya putram,
suvaktram cārukuṇḍalam,
droṇena samare śaraiḥ bahudhā nikṛttam.
23. O Hṛṣīkeśa (Krishna), behold this son, handsome-faced, with beautiful earrings, cut down in battle by Droṇa in many ways with arrows.
पितरं नूनमाजिस्थं युध्यमानं परैः सह ।
नाजहात्पृष्ठतो वीरमद्यापि मधुसूदन ॥२४॥
24. pitaraṁ nūnamājisthaṁ yudhyamānaṁ paraiḥ saha ,
nājahātpṛṣṭhato vīramadyāpi madhusūdana.
24. pitaram nūnam ājistham yudhyamānam paraiḥ saha
na ājahāt pṛṣṭhataḥ vīram adyāpi madhusūdana
24. madhusūdana,
nūnam (abhimanyuḥ) pitaram na ājahāt,
ājistham paraiḥ saha yudhyamānam,
pṛṣṭhataḥ,
adyāpi vīram.
24. O Madhusūdana (Krishna), surely this hero (Abhimanyu) did not abandon his father who was standing in battle, fighting with enemies, not even from behind, not even now.
एवं ममापि पुत्रस्य पुत्रः पितरमन्वगात् ।
दुर्योधनं महाबाहो लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा ॥२५॥
25. evaṁ mamāpi putrasya putraḥ pitaramanvagāt ,
duryodhanaṁ mahābāho lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā.
25. evam mama api putrasya putraḥ pitaram anvagāt
duryodhanam mahābāho lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā
25. mahābāho,
evam mama putrasya putraḥ पितरम् अन्वगात्,
api ca paravīrahā lakṣmaṇaḥ duryodhanam अन्वगात्।
25. O mighty-armed one, just as my son's son followed his father, so too Lakṣmaṇa, the slayer of enemy heroes, followed his father Duryodhana.
विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ पतितौ पश्य माधव ।
हिमान्ते पुष्पितौ शालौ मरुता गलिताविव ॥२६॥
26. vindānuvindāvāvantyau patitau paśya mādhava ,
himānte puṣpitau śālau marutā galitāviva.

26. O Mādhava, behold Vindā and Anuvindā, the two princes of Avanti, fallen, like two blooming śāla trees withered by the wind at the end of winter.
काञ्चनाङ्गदवर्माणौ बाणखड्गधनुर्धरौ ।
ऋषभप्रतिरूपाक्षौ शयानौ विमलस्रजौ ॥२७॥
27. kāñcanāṅgadavarmāṇau bāṇakhaḍgadhanurdharau ,
ṛṣabhapratirūpākṣau śayānau vimalasrajau.

27. They are lying down, adorned with golden armlets and armor, holding arrows, swords, and bows, with eyes resembling those of bulls, and wearing pure garlands.
अवध्याः पाण्डवाः कृष्ण सर्व एव त्वया सह ।
ये मुक्ता द्रोणभीष्माभ्यां कर्णाद्वैकर्तनात्कृपात् ॥२८॥
28. avadhyāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ kṛṣṇa sarva eva tvayā saha ,
ye muktā droṇabhīṣmābhyāṁ karṇādvaikartanātkṛpāt.
28. avadhyāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ kṛṣṇa sarve eva tvayā saha ye
muktāḥ droṇabhīṣmābhyām karṇāt vaikartanāt kṛpāt
28. kṛṣṇa tvayā saha sarve eva pāṇḍavāḥ avadhyāḥ ye
droṇabhīṣmābhyām karṇāt vaikartanāt kṛpāt muktāḥ
28. O Kṛṣṇa, all the Pāṇḍavas, along with you, are invincible (literally, not to be killed). They are the ones who escaped from Droṇa and Bhīṣma, from Karṇa, from Vaikartana (Karṇa), and from Kṛpa.
दुर्योधनाद्द्रोणसुतात्सैन्धवाच्च महारथात् ।
सोमदत्ताद्विकर्णाच्च शूराच्च कृतवर्मणः ।
ये हन्युः शस्त्रवेगेन देवानपि नरर्षभाः ॥२९॥
29. duryodhanāddroṇasutātsaindhavācca mahārathāt ,
somadattādvikarṇācca śūrācca kṛtavarmaṇaḥ ,
ye hanyuḥ śastravegena devānapi nararṣabhāḥ.

29. And from Duryodhana, from Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāmā), and from Saindhava (Jayadratha), the great charioteers; from Somadatta and Vikarṇa; and from the brave Kṛtavarman. These best of men (the Pāṇḍavas) could even kill the gods with the force of their weapons.
त इमे निहताः संख्ये पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ।
नातिभारोऽस्ति दैवस्य ध्रुवं माधव कश्चन ।
यदिमे निहताः शूराः क्षत्रियैः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥३०॥
30. ta ime nihatāḥ saṁkhye paśya kālasya paryayam ,
nātibhāro'sti daivasya dhruvaṁ mādhava kaścana ,
yadime nihatāḥ śūrāḥ kṣatriyaiḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ.

30. O Mādhava, behold the turn of time! These very ones have been slain in battle. There is certainly no undue burden upon divine destiny. If these heroic, preeminent kṣatriyas are indeed slain by other kṣatriyas...
तदैव निहताः कृष्ण मम पुत्रास्तरस्विनः ।
यदैवाकृतकामस्त्वमुपप्लव्यं गतः पुनः ॥३१॥
31. tadaiva nihatāḥ kṛṣṇa mama putrāstarasvinaḥ ,
yadaivākṛtakāmastvamupaplavyaṁ gataḥ punaḥ.
31. tat eva nihitāḥ kṛṣṇa mama putrāḥ tarasvinaḥ |
yadā eva akṛtakāmaḥ tvam upaplavyam gataḥ punaḥ
31. kṛṣṇa mama tarasvinaḥ putrāḥ tat eva nihitāḥ
yadā eva tvam akṛtakāmaḥ punaḥ upaplavyam gataḥ
31. O Krishna, my powerful sons were indeed slain at that very moment when you, with your desires unfulfilled, returned to Upaplavyam.
शंतनोश्चैव पुत्रेण प्राज्ञेन विदुरेण च ।
तदैवोक्तास्मि मा स्नेहं कुरुष्वात्मसुतेष्विति ॥३२॥
32. śaṁtanoścaiva putreṇa prājñena vidureṇa ca ,
tadaivoktāsmi mā snehaṁ kuruṣvātmasuteṣviti.
32. śantanoḥ ca eva putreṇa prājñena vidureṇa ca |
tat eva uktā asmi mā sneham kuruṣva ātmasuteṣu iti
32. ca eva śantanoḥ putreṇa prājñena vidureṇa ca tat
eva uktā asmi ātmasuteṣu sneham mā kuruṣva iti
32. And at that very time, I was told by the wise son of Śantanu, Vidura, 'Do not show affection for your own sons.'
तयोर्न दर्शनं तात मिथ्या भवितुमर्हति ।
अचिरेणैव मे पुत्रा भस्मीभूता जनार्दन ॥३३॥
33. tayorna darśanaṁ tāta mithyā bhavitumarhati ,
acireṇaiva me putrā bhasmībhūtā janārdana.
33. tayoḥ na darśanam tāta mithyā bhavitum arhati
| acireṇa eva me putrāḥ bhasmībhūtāḥ janārdana
33. tāta tayoḥ darśanam mithyā bhavitum na arhati
janārdana acireṇa eva me putrāḥ bhasmībhūtāḥ
33. O dear one, the foresight of those two (Bhishma and Vidura) cannot be false. O Janārdana, my sons will very soon be reduced to ashes.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा न्यपतद्भूमौ गान्धारी शोककर्शिता ।
दुःखोपहतविज्ञाना धैर्यमुत्सृज्य भारत ॥३४॥
34. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktvā nyapatadbhūmau gāndhārī śokakarśitā ,
duḥkhopahatavijñānā dhairyamutsṛjya bhārata.
34. vaiśampāyana uvāca iti uktvā nyapatat bhūmau gāndhārī
śokakarśitā duḥkhopahatavijñānā dhairyam utsṛjya bhārata

34. Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus, Gāndhārī, tormented by grief and with her understanding overwhelmed by sorrow, abandoned all courage and fell to the ground, O Bhārata.
ततः कोपपरीताङ्गी पुत्रशोकपरिप्लुता ।
जगाम शौरिं दोषेण गान्धारी व्यथितेन्द्रिया ॥३५॥
35. tataḥ kopaparītāṅgī putraśokapariplutā ,
jagāma śauriṁ doṣeṇa gāndhārī vyathitendriyā.

35. Then, Gāndhārī, whose limbs were overcome by anger, submerged in sorrow for her sons, and with her senses greatly disturbed, approached Śauri (Kṛṣṇa) with an accusation.
गान्धार्युवाच ।
पाण्डवा धार्तराष्ट्राश्च द्रुग्धाः कृष्ण परस्परम् ।
उपेक्षिता विनश्यन्तस्त्वया कस्माज्जनार्दन ॥३६॥
36. gāndhāryuvāca ,
pāṇḍavā dhārtarāṣṭrāśca drugdhāḥ kṛṣṇa parasparam ,
upekṣitā vinaśyantastvayā kasmājjanārdana.

36. Gāndhārī said: O Kṛṣṇa, O Janārdana, why were the Pāṇḍavas and the Dhārtarāṣṭras, who wronged each other and were perishing, neglected by you?
शक्तेन बहुभृत्येन विपुले तिष्ठता बले ।
उभयत्र समर्थेन श्रुतवाक्येन चैव ह ॥३७॥
37. śaktena bahubhṛtyena vipule tiṣṭhatā bale ,
ubhayatra samarthena śrutavākyena caiva ha.

37. (You, O Janārdana), who are capable, who have many followers, who stand with immense power, who are competent for both parties, and whose words were indeed heard (by both sides).
इच्छतोपेक्षितो नाशः कुरूणां मधुसूदन ।
यस्मात्त्वया महाबाहो फलं तस्मादवाप्नुहि ॥३८॥
38. icchatopekṣito nāśaḥ kurūṇāṁ madhusūdana ,
yasmāttvayā mahābāho phalaṁ tasmādavāpnuhi.
38. icchataḥ upekṣitaḥ nāśaḥ kurūṇām madhusūdana
yasmāt tvayā mahābāho phalam tasmāt avāpnuhi
38. madhusūdana,
mahābāho,
yasmāt tvayā icchataḥ kurūṇām nāśaḥ upekṣitaḥ,
tasmāt phalam avāpnuhi
38. O Madhusūdana (madhusūdana), though you desired (to prevent it), the destruction of the Kurus was neglected by you. Therefore, O mighty-armed one, you shall obtain the consequence from that.
पतिशुश्रूषया यन्मे तपः किंचिदुपार्जितम् ।
तेन त्वां दुरवापात्मञ्शप्स्ये चक्रगदाधर ॥३९॥
39. patiśuśrūṣayā yanme tapaḥ kiṁcidupārjitam ,
tena tvāṁ duravāpātmañśapsye cakragadādhara.
39. patiśuśrūṣayā yat me tapaḥ kiñcit upārjitam
tena tvām duravāpātman śapsye cakragadādhara
39. cakragadādhara,
duravāpātman,
patiśuśrūṣayā yat kiñcit tapaḥ me upārjitam,
tena tvām śapsye
39. Whatever spiritual austerity (tapas) I have accumulated through devoted service to my husband, by that very power, O you whose true self (ātman) is difficult to grasp (duravāpātman), O bearer of the discus and mace (cakragadādhara), I will curse you.
यस्मात्परस्परं घ्नन्तो ज्ञातयः कुरुपाण्डवाः ।
उपेक्षितास्ते गोविन्द तस्माज्ज्ञातीन्वधिष्यसि ॥४०॥
40. yasmātparasparaṁ ghnanto jñātayaḥ kurupāṇḍavāḥ ,
upekṣitāste govinda tasmājjñātīnvadhiṣyasi.
40. yasmāt parasparam ghnantaḥ jñātayaḥ kurupāṇḍavāḥ
upekṣitāḥ te govinda tasmāt jñātīn vadhiṣyasi
40. govinda,
yasmāt kurupāṇḍavāḥ ghnantaḥ jñātayaḥ parasparam te upekṣitāḥ,
tasmāt jñātīn vadhiṣyasi
40. O Govinda (govinda), because you neglected your Kuru and Pandava kinsmen who were engaged in mutual killing, therefore you shall kill your (own) kinsmen.
त्वमप्युपस्थिते वर्षे षट्त्रिंशे मधुसूदन ।
हतज्ञातिर्हतामात्यो हतपुत्रो वनेचरः ।
कुत्सितेनाभ्युपायेन निधनं समवाप्स्यसि ॥४१॥
41. tvamapyupasthite varṣe ṣaṭtriṁśe madhusūdana ,
hatajñātirhatāmātyo hataputro vanecaraḥ ,
kutsitenābhyupāyena nidhanaṁ samavāpsyasi.
41. tvam api upasthite varṣe ṣaṭtriṃśe
madhusūdana hatakñātiḥ hatāmātyaḥ
hataputraḥ vanecaraḥ kutsitena
abhyupāyena nidhanam samavāpsyasi
41. madhusūdana,
tvam api ṣaṭtriṃśe varṣe upasthite hatakñātiḥ hatāmātyaḥ hataputraḥ vanecaraḥ kutsitena abhyupāyena nidhanam samavāpsyasi
41. O Madhusūdana (madhusūdana), when the thirty-sixth year arrives, you yourself, with your relatives dead, your ministers dead, and your sons dead, wandering in the forest, shall meet your end through a despicable means.
तवाप्येवं हतसुता निहतज्ञातिबान्धवाः ।
स्त्रियः परिपतिष्यन्ति यथैता भरतस्त्रियः ॥४२॥
42. tavāpyevaṁ hatasutā nihatajñātibāndhavāḥ ,
striyaḥ paripatiṣyanti yathaitā bharatastriyaḥ.
42. tava api evam hatasutāḥ nihatajñātibāndhavāḥ
striyaḥ paripatiṣyanti yathā etāḥ bharatastriyaḥ
42. evam tava striyaḥ hatasutāḥ nihatajñātibāndhavāḥ
api etāḥ bharatastriyaḥ yathā paripatiṣyanti
42. In this very way, your women, whose sons have been slain and whose kinsmen and relatives have been destroyed, will also fall into distress, just like these women of the Bhārata lineage.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं घोरं वासुदेवो महामनाः ।
उवाच देवीं गान्धारीमीषदभ्युत्स्मयन्निव ॥४३॥
43. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ ghoraṁ vāsudevo mahāmanāḥ ,
uvāca devīṁ gāndhārīmīṣadabhyutsmayanniva.
43. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tat śrutvā vacanam ghoram vāsudevaḥ
mahāmanāḥ uvāca devīm gāndhārīm īṣat abhyutsmayan iva
43. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca mahāmanāḥ vāsudevaḥ tat ghoram
vacanam śrutvā devīm gāndhārīm īṣat abhyutsmayan iva uvāca
43. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard that terrible speech, Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), the great-souled one, spoke to Queen Gāndhārī, appearing as if with a slight smile.
संहर्ता वृष्णिचक्रस्य नान्यो मद्विद्यते शुभे ।
जानेऽहमेतदप्येवं चीर्णं चरसि क्षत्रिये ॥४४॥
44. saṁhartā vṛṣṇicakrasya nānyo madvidyate śubhe ,
jāne'hametadapyevaṁ cīrṇaṁ carasi kṣatriye.
44. saṃhartā vṛṣṇicakrasya na anyaḥ mat vidyate śubhe
jāne aham etat api evam cīrṇam carasi kṣatriye
44. śubhe vṛṣṇicakrasya saṃhartā mat anyaḥ na vidyate
kṣatriye aham jāne etat api evam cīrṇam carasi
44. O auspicious one, there is no one other than me who will be the destroyer of the Vṛṣṇi clan. O Kṣatriya woman, I know that you have indeed performed (fulfilled) this curse in this manner.
अवध्यास्ते नरैरन्यैरपि वा देवदानवैः ।
परस्परकृतं नाशमतः प्राप्स्यन्ति यादवाः ॥४५॥
45. avadhyāste narairanyairapi vā devadānavaiḥ ,
parasparakṛtaṁ nāśamataḥ prāpsyanti yādavāḥ.
45. avadhyāḥ te naraiḥ anyaiḥ api vā devadānavaiḥ
parasparakṛtam nāśam ataḥ prāpsyanti yādavāḥ
45. te anyaiḥ naraiḥ api vā devadānavaiḥ avadhyāḥ
ataḥ yādavāḥ parasparakṛtam nāśam prāpsyanti
45. They (the Yadavas) are not to be slain by other men, nor even by gods or Dānavas (demons). Therefore, the Yadavas will experience destruction brought about by themselves, through mutual conflict.
इत्युक्तवति दाशार्हे पाण्डवास्त्रस्तचेतसः ।
बभूवुर्भृशसंविग्ना निराशाश्चापि जीविते ॥४६॥
46. ityuktavati dāśārhe pāṇḍavāstrastacetasaḥ ,
babhūvurbhṛśasaṁvignā nirāśāścāpi jīvite.
46. iti uktavati dāśārhe pāṇḍavāḥ trasta-cetasaḥ
babhūvuḥ bhṛśa-saṃvignāḥ nirāśāḥ ca api jīvite
46. dāśārhe iti uktavati,
pāṇḍavāḥ trasta-cetasaḥ,
bhṛśa-saṃvignāḥ ca nirāśāḥ api jīvite babhūvuḥ
46. As soon as Krishna, the descendant of Daśārha, had spoken thus, the Pāṇḍavas, their minds struck with terror, became exceedingly agitated and lost all hope for their lives.
