Nārada said: The tiger among the Bhṛgus (Paraśurāma) was pleased by Karṇa's strength of arm, by his humility, by his self-control, and also by his service to his teacher (guru).

That ascetic (tapas) (Paraśurāma) duly and completely taught the entire Brahmāstra (weapon), including its method of withdrawal, to the greatly ascetic (tapas) Karṇa, speaking calmly and without agitation.

Then Karna, renowned for his knowledge of weaponry, delighting in Bhrigu's hermitage (āśrama), put great effort into the science of archery, for he possessed astonishing valor.

Then, one day, the wise (dhīmān) Rama, emaciated by fasting, was wandering near the hermitage (āśrama) accompanied by Karna.

The guru (guru), Jamadagni's son (Jamadagnya), having developed a bond of friendship out of trust, placed his weary head on Karna's lap and indeed fell asleep.

6.
Then, a terrible (dāruṇa) worm, composed of phlegm and feeding on flesh and blood, whose touch was dreadful, approached Karna.

7.
Then, that blood-eating worm, having reached his (Karna's) thigh, pierced it. Yet, he (Karna) was unable to throw it off or even kill it, out of fear of his preceptor (guru).

O Bhārata, even though he was being bitten in that manner by that worm, the son of the charioteer (Karna), being fearful of waking his preceptor (guru), disregarded it.

9.
But Karna, having suppressed that unbearable pain with fortitude, neither trembled nor was distressed, and indeed, he steadily held Bhārgava (Paraśurāma).

10.
But when the radiant descendant of Bhṛgu (Paraśurāma) was touched by blood on his person, then he awoke, became distressed, and spoke these words.

11.
Oh, I have become impure! What is this that is being done by you? Tell me this truth, abandoning all fear, for my sake.

12.
His ear then recounted its being consumed by a worm. Rama also saw that worm, which resembled a boar.

That worm, immediately upon being seen by Rama, released its vital breath (prāṇa). As soon as that blood was mingled, something miraculous occurred.

Then, in the sky, a dreadful demon of universal form was seen, red-necked, black-bodied, and riding on clouds.

He, with joined palms and a fulfilled mind, spoke to Rama: 'May there be well-being for you, O best of the Bhṛgus! I shall depart the way I came.'

tu rāmaḥ sakrodham idam vacanam karṇam abravīt.
24.
Having spoken thus and offered obeisance, the great asura departed to Rāma. Then Rāma, filled with anger, spoke these words to Karṇa.
25. atiduḥkhamidaṁ mūḍha na jātu brāhmaṇaḥ sahet ,

25.

25.
mūḍha,
idam ati duḥkham; brāhmaṇaḥ na jātu sahet.
te dhairyam kṣatriyasya eva; kāmayā satyam ucyatām.
idam ati duḥkham; brāhmaṇaḥ na jātu sahet.
te dhairyam kṣatriyasya eva; kāmayā satyam ucyatām.
25.
O fool, this is exceedingly painful; a brāhmaṇa should never endure such a thing. Your fortitude is indeed like that of a kṣatriya; speak the truth as you wish.

brahmakṣatrāntare jātam sūtam mām viddhi.
"
brahmakṣatrāntare jātam sūtam mām viddhi.
"
26.
Then Karṇa, fearful of the curse and seeking to appease him, said to him: "O Bhārgava, know me to be a sūta, born from the union of a brāhmaṇa and a kṣatriya."

27.
People on Earth refer to me as Karṇa, the son of Rādhā. O Brahmin (brahman), O descendant of Bhṛgu, please show your grace to me, who is eager for weapons.

28.
My father is certainly my teacher (guru), the bestower of Vedic knowledge, and my master. Therefore, before you, I declared my family lineage as a descendant of Bhṛgu.

29.
The best among the Bhṛgus spoke to him, appearing to smile but filled with anger, as [Karṇa lay] fallen on the ground, miserable, trembling, and with folded hands.

30.
Because you have deceptively served me here out of greed for weapons, therefore, O foolish one, this divine weapon will not manifest for you.

31.
Except at the moment of your death, when you encounter an equal [opponent], divine knowledge (brahman) will surely never abide permanently in one who is not a Brahmin.

32.
You must leave now, for there is no place for falsehood here for you. No warrior (kṣatriya) on earth will ever be equal to you in battle.

33.
Thus addressed by Rama (Paraśurāma), he then properly approached Duryodhana. Having done so, he declared, 'I am now skilled in the use of weapons!'
