Saṃjaya said: "Then King Duryodhana, along with Śakuni, the son of Subala, and your son Duḥśāsana, and the invincible son of the charioteer (Karṇa)..."

O great king, having assembled, they held a deliberation regarding their desired outcome: "How are the sons of Pāṇḍu, along with their followers, to be defeated in battle?"

Then King Duryodhana addressed all those ministers, after speaking with Karṇa, the son of Sūta, and the mighty Śakuni, son of Subala.

O great king (Mahārāja), the son of Sūta (Karṇa) spoke to that ruler of men (Duryodhana): "O best of Bharatas, do not grieve! I shall accomplish what is dear to you."

O Bhārata (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), let Bhishma, the son of Śāntanu, quickly depart from the great battle! And when the son of Gaṅgā (Bhishma) has withdrawn from the fight and laid down his weapons, then (I will act).

O king, Bhīṣma always shows compassion towards the Pāṇḍavas. He is also truly incapable of conquering these great warriors (mahārathas) in battle.
