संजय उवाच ।
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ।
दुःशासनश्च पुत्रस्ते सूतपुत्रश्च दुर्जयः ॥१॥

1. Saṃjaya said: "Then King Duryodhana, along with Śakuni, the son of Subala, and your son Duḥśāsana, and the invincible son of the charioteer (Karṇa)..."
समागम्य महाराज मन्त्रं चक्रूर्विवक्षितम् ।
कथं पाण्डुसुता युद्धे जेतव्याः सगणा इति ॥२॥
2. samāgamya mahārāja mantraṁ cakrūrvivakṣitam ,
kathaṁ pāṇḍusutā yuddhe jetavyāḥ sagaṇā iti.

2. O great king, having assembled, they held a deliberation regarding their desired outcome: "How are the sons of Pāṇḍu, along with their followers, to be defeated in battle?"
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा सर्वांस्तानाह मन्त्रिणः ।
सूतपुत्रं समाभाष्य सौबलं च महाबलम् ॥३॥
3. tato duryodhano rājā sarvāṁstānāha mantriṇaḥ ,
sūtaputraṁ samābhāṣya saubalaṁ ca mahābalam.
3. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ rājā sarvān tān āha mantriṇaḥ
sūtaputram samābhāṣya saubalam ca mahābalam

3. Then King Duryodhana addressed all those ministers, after speaking with Karṇa, the son of Sūta, and the mighty Śakuni, son of Subala.
द्रोणो भीष्मः कृपः शल्यः सौमदत्तिश्च संयुगे ।
न पार्थान्प्रतिबाधन्ते न जाने तत्र कारणम् ॥४॥
4. droṇo bhīṣmaḥ kṛpaḥ śalyaḥ saumadattiśca saṁyuge ,
na pārthānpratibādhante na jāne tatra kāraṇam.
4. droṇaḥ bhīṣmaḥ kṛpaḥ śalyaḥ saumadattiḥ ca saṃyuge
na pārthān pratibādhante na jāne tatra kāraṇam

4. Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Kṛpa, Śalya, and Saumadatti (Bhuriśravas) do not hinder the Pārthas in battle. I do not know the reason for that.
अवध्यमानास्ते चापि क्षपयन्ति बलं मम ।
सोऽस्मि क्षीणबलः कर्ण क्षीणशस्त्रश्च संयुगे ॥५॥
5. avadhyamānāste cāpi kṣapayanti balaṁ mama ,
so'smi kṣīṇabalaḥ karṇa kṣīṇaśastraśca saṁyuge.
5. avadhyamānāḥ te ca api kṣapayanti balam mama saḥ
asmi kṣīṇabalaḥ karṇa kṣīṇaśastraḥ ca saṃyuge
5. avadhyamānāḥ te ca api mama balam kṣapayanti
karṇa saḥ asmi kṣīṇabalaḥ ca saṃyuge kṣīṇaśastraḥ
5. And those Pāṇḍavas, though not being slain, are destroying my army. Therefore, O Karṇa, I am one whose strength is diminished, and whose weapons are depleted in battle.
निकृतः पाण्डवैः शूरैरवध्यैर्दैवतैरपि ।
सोऽहं संशयमापन्नः प्रकरिष्ये कथं रणम् ॥६॥
6. nikṛtaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ śūrairavadhyairdaivatairapi ,
so'haṁ saṁśayamāpannaḥ prakariṣye kathaṁ raṇam.
6. nikṛtaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ śūraiḥ avadhyaiḥ devataiḥ api
saḥ aham saṃśayam āpannaḥ prakariṣye katham raṇam
6. śūraiḥ avadhyaiḥ devataiḥ api pāṇḍavaiḥ nikṛtaḥ
saḥ aham saṃśayam āpannaḥ katham raṇam prakariṣye
6. Having been humiliated by the brave Pāṇḍavas, who are invincible even by the gods, how shall I, seized by doubt, undertake this battle?
तमब्रवीन्महाराज सूतपुत्रो नराधिपम् ।
मा शुचो भरतश्रेष्ठ प्रकरिष्ये प्रियं तव ॥७॥
7. tamabravīnmahārāja sūtaputro narādhipam ,
mā śuco bharataśreṣṭha prakariṣye priyaṁ tava.
7. tam abravīt mahārāja sūtaputraḥ narādhipam mā
śucaḥ bharataśreṣṭha prakariṣye priyam tava
7. mahārāja sūtaputraḥ tam narādhipam abravīt
bharataśreṣṭha mā śucaḥ tava priyam prakariṣye
7. O great king (Mahārāja), the son of Sūta (Karṇa) spoke to that ruler of men (Duryodhana): "O best of Bharatas, do not grieve! I shall accomplish what is dear to you."
भीष्मः शांतनवस्तूर्णमपयातु महारणात् ।
निवृत्ते युधि गाङ्गेये न्यस्तशस्त्रे च भारत ॥८॥
8. bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavastūrṇamapayātu mahāraṇāt ,
nivṛtte yudhi gāṅgeye nyastaśastre ca bhārata.
8. bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ tūrṇam apayātu mahāraṇāt
nivṛtte yudhi gāṅgeye nyastaśastre ca bhārata
8. bhārata śāntanavaḥ bhīṣmaḥ tūrṇam mahāraṇāt
apayātu ca gāṅgeye yudhi nivṛtte nyastaśastre
8. O Bhārata (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), let Bhishma, the son of Śāntanu, quickly depart from the great battle! And when the son of Gaṅgā (Bhishma) has withdrawn from the fight and laid down his weapons, then (I will act).
अहं पार्थान्हनिष्यामि सहितान्सर्वसोमकैः ।
पश्यतो युधि भीष्मस्य शपे सत्येन ते नृप ॥९॥
9. ahaṁ pārthānhaniṣyāmi sahitānsarvasomakaiḥ ,
paśyato yudhi bhīṣmasya śape satyena te nṛpa.
9. aham pārthān haniṣyāmi sahitān sarvasomakaiḥ
paśyataḥ yudhi bhīṣmasya śape satyena te nṛpa
9. nṛpa aham te satyena śape yudhi bhīṣmasya
paśyataḥ sahitān sarvasomakaiḥ pārthān haniṣyāmi
9. O king, I swear to you by the truth that I shall kill the Pāṇḍavas along with all the Somakas, even while Bhishma watches in battle.
पाण्डवेषु दयां राजन्सदा भीष्मः करोति वै ।
अशक्तश्च रणे भीष्मो जेतुमेतान्महारथान् ॥१०॥
10. pāṇḍaveṣu dayāṁ rājansadā bhīṣmaḥ karoti vai ,
aśaktaśca raṇe bhīṣmo jetumetānmahārathān.
10. pāṇḍaveṣu dayām rājan sadā bhīṣmaḥ karoti vai
aśaktaḥ ca raṇe bhīṣmaḥ jetum etān mahārathān
10. rājan bhīṣmaḥ pāṇḍaveṣu sadā dayām karoti vai
ca bhīṣmaḥ raṇe etān mahārathān jetum aśaktaḥ
10. O king, Bhīṣma always shows compassion towards the Pāṇḍavas. He is also truly incapable of conquering these great warriors (mahārathas) in battle.
अभिमानी रणे भीष्मो नित्यं चापि रणप्रियः ।
स कथं पाण्डवान्युद्धे जेष्यते तात संगतान् ॥११॥
11. abhimānī raṇe bhīṣmo nityaṁ cāpi raṇapriyaḥ ,
sa kathaṁ pāṇḍavānyuddhe jeṣyate tāta saṁgatān.
11. abhimānī raṇe bhīṣmaḥ nityam ca api raṇapriyaḥ
saḥ katham pāṇḍavān yuddhe jeṣyate tāta saṃgatān
11. tāta raṇe abhimānī ca nityam raṇapriyaḥ saḥ
bhīṣmaḥ yuddhe saṃgatān pāṇḍavān katham jeṣyate
11. Bhīṣma is proud in battle and constantly fond of war. O dear one, how will he then conquer the united Pāṇḍavas in battle?
स त्वं शीघ्रमितो गत्वा भीष्मस्य शिबिरं प्रति ।
अनुमान्य रणे भीष्मं शस्त्रं न्यासय भारत ॥१२॥
12. sa tvaṁ śīghramito gatvā bhīṣmasya śibiraṁ prati ,
anumānya raṇe bhīṣmaṁ śastraṁ nyāsaya bhārata.
12. saḥ tvam śīghram itaḥ gatvā bhīṣmasya śibiram
prati anumānya raṇe bhīṣmam śastram nyāsaya bhārata
12. bhārata saḥ tvam itaḥ śīghram bhīṣmasya śibiram
prati gatvā raṇe bhīṣmam anumānya śastram nyāsaya
12. Therefore, you should quickly go from here to Bhīṣma's camp, and persuading Bhīṣma, make him lay down his weapon in battle, O Bhārata.
न्यस्तशस्त्रे ततो भीष्मे निहतान्पश्य पाण्डवान् ।
मयैकेन रणे राजन्ससुहृद्गणबान्धवान् ॥१३॥
13. nyastaśastre tato bhīṣme nihatānpaśya pāṇḍavān ,
mayaikena raṇe rājansasuhṛdgaṇabāndhavān.
13. nyastaśastre tataḥ bhīṣme nihatān paśya pāṇḍavān
mayā ekena raṇe rājan sasuhṛdgaṇabāndhavān
13. rājan tataḥ bhīṣme nyastaśastre (sati) mayā ekena
raṇe sasuhṛdgaṇabāndhavān pāṇḍavān nihatān paśya
13. Then, when Bhīṣma has laid down his weapon, O king, you will see the Pāṇḍavas, along with their friends and kinsmen, slain in battle by me alone.
एवमुक्तस्तु कर्णेन पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव ।
अब्रवीद्भ्रातरं तत्र दुःशासनमिदं वचः ॥१४॥
14. evamuktastu karṇena putro duryodhanastava ,
abravīdbhrātaraṁ tatra duḥśāsanamidaṁ vacaḥ.
14. evam uktaḥ tu karṇena putraḥ duryodhanaḥ tava
abravīt bhrātaram tatra duḥśāsanam idam vacaḥ
14. tava putraḥ duryodhanaḥ karṇena evam uktaḥ tu
tatra bhrātaram duḥśāsanam idam vacaḥ abravīt
14. Thus addressed by Karṇa, your son Duryodhana then spoke these words to his brother Duḥśāsana there.
अनुयात्रं यथा सज्जं सर्वं भवति सर्वतः ।
दुःशासन तथा क्षिप्रं सर्वमेवोपपादय ॥१५॥
15. anuyātraṁ yathā sajjaṁ sarvaṁ bhavati sarvataḥ ,
duḥśāsana tathā kṣipraṁ sarvamevopapādaya.
15. anuyātram yathā sajjam sarvam bhavati sarvataḥ
duḥśāsana tathā kṣipram sarvam eva upapādaya
15. duḥśāsana tathā kṣipram sarvam eva upapādaya
yathā anuyātram sarvam sarvataḥ sajjam bhavati
15. O Duḥśāsana, swiftly arrange everything so that it is fully prepared on all sides for the march.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजन्कर्णमाह जनेश्वरः ।
अनुमान्य रणे भीष्ममितोऽहं द्विपदां वरम् ॥१६॥
16. evamuktvā tato rājankarṇamāha janeśvaraḥ ,
anumānya raṇe bhīṣmamito'haṁ dvipadāṁ varam.
16. evam uktvā tataḥ rājan karṇam āha janeśvaraḥ
anumānya raṇe bhīṣmam itaḥ aham dvipadām varam
16. rājan evam uktvā tataḥ janeśvaraḥ karṇam āha
aham raṇe dvipadām varam bhīṣmam anumānya itaḥ
16. O king, having spoken thus, the lord of men (Duryodhana) then said to Karṇa: 'Having received permission from Bhīṣma, the best of bipeds (men), on the battlefield, I will come from here...'
आगमिष्ये ततः क्षिप्रं त्वत्सकाशमरिंदम ।
ततस्त्वं पुरुषव्याघ्र प्रकरिष्यसि संयुगम् ॥१७॥
17. āgamiṣye tataḥ kṣipraṁ tvatsakāśamariṁdama ,
tatastvaṁ puruṣavyāghra prakariṣyasi saṁyugam.
17. āgamiṣye tataḥ kṣipram tvat sakāśam arimdam
tataḥ tvam puruṣavyāghra prakariṣyasi saṃyugam
17. tataḥ kṣipram arimdam tvat sakāśam āgamiṣye
tataḥ puruṣavyāghra tvam saṃyugam prakariṣyasi
17. I will then swiftly come to your side, O vanquisher of foes. Thereafter, O tiger among men, you will wage the battle.
निष्पपात ततस्तूर्णं पुत्रस्तव विशां पते ।
सहितो भ्रातृभिः सर्वैर्देवैरिव शतक्रतुः ॥१८॥
18. niṣpapāta tatastūrṇaṁ putrastava viśāṁ pate ,
sahito bhrātṛbhiḥ sarvairdevairiva śatakratuḥ.
18. niṣpapāta tataḥ tūrṇam putraḥ tava viśām pate
sahitaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ sarvaiḥ devaiḥ iva śatakratuḥ
18. viśām pate tava putraḥ tataḥ tūrṇam sarvaiḥ
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ devaiḥ iva śatakratuḥ niṣpapāta
18. Then, O king (viśām pate), your son quickly emerged, accompanied by all his brothers, just like Indra (śatakratuḥ) accompanied by the gods.
ततस्तं नृपशार्दूलं शार्दूलसमविक्रमम् ।
आरोहयद्धयं तूर्णं भ्राता दुःशासनस्तदा ॥१९॥
19. tatastaṁ nṛpaśārdūlaṁ śārdūlasamavikramam ,
ārohayaddhayaṁ tūrṇaṁ bhrātā duḥśāsanastadā.
19. tataḥ tam nṛpaśārdūlam śārdūlasamavikramam
ārohayan hayam tūrṇam bhrātā duḥśāsanaḥ tadā
19. tataḥ tadā bhrātā duḥśāsanaḥ tam nṛpaśārdūlam
śārdūlasamavikramam tūrṇam hayam ārohayan
19. Then, his brother Duḥśāsana quickly helped that king, who was a lion among men (nṛpaśārdūlam) and possessed valor equal to a tiger (śārdūlasamavikramam), mount his horse.
अङ्गदी बद्धमुकुटो हस्ताभरणवान्नृपः ।
धार्तराष्ट्रो महाराज विबभौ स महेन्द्रवत् ॥२०॥
20. aṅgadī baddhamukuṭo hastābharaṇavānnṛpaḥ ,
dhārtarāṣṭro mahārāja vibabhau sa mahendravat.

dhārtarāṣṭraḥ mahārāja vibabhau saḥ mahendravat
20. mahārāja saḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ nṛpaḥ aṅgadī

20. O great king (mahārāja), that son of Dhritarashtra (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) – the king adorned with armlets, a crown, and hand ornaments – shone splendidly, just like the great Indra (mahendravat).
भाण्डीपुष्पनिकाशेन तपनीयनिभेन च ।
अनुलिप्तः परार्ध्येन चन्दनेन सुगन्धिना ॥२१॥
21. bhāṇḍīpuṣpanikāśena tapanīyanibhena ca ,
anuliptaḥ parārdhyena candanena sugandhinā.

21. saḥ anuliptaḥ (asti) parārdhyena sugandhinā

21. He was anointed with the most excellent and fragrant sandalwood (candana), which shone with the luster of a bhāṇḍī flower and the brilliance of gold.
अरजोम्बरसंवीतः सिंहखेलगतिर्नृपः ।
शुशुभे विमलार्चिष्मञ्शरदीव दिवाकरः ॥२२॥
22. arajombarasaṁvītaḥ siṁhakhelagatirnṛpaḥ ,
śuśubhe vimalārciṣmañśaradīva divākaraḥ.
22. arajombarasaṃvītaḥ siṃhakhelagatiḥ nṛpaḥ
śuśubhe vimalārciṣmān śaradi iva divākaraḥ
22. nṛpaḥ arajombarasaṃvītaḥ siṃhakhelagatiḥ śuśubhe,
vimalārciṣmān divākaraḥ śaradi iva
22. The king, clad in spotless garments and moving with the majestic, playful gait of a lion, shone brilliantly, just like the sun with its clear rays in the autumn season.
तं प्रयान्तं नरव्याघ्रं भीष्मस्य शिबिरं प्रति ।
अनुजग्मुर्महेष्वासाः सर्वलोकस्य धन्विनः ।
भ्रातरश्च महेष्वासास्त्रिदशा इव वासवम् ॥२३॥
23. taṁ prayāntaṁ naravyāghraṁ bhīṣmasya śibiraṁ prati ,
anujagmurmaheṣvāsāḥ sarvalokasya dhanvinaḥ ,
bhrātaraśca maheṣvāsāstridaśā iva vāsavam.
23. tam prayāntaṃ naravyāghraṃ bhīṣmasya
śibiraṃ prati anujagmuḥ maheṣvāsāḥ
sarvalokasya dhanvinaḥ bhrātaraḥ
ca maheṣvāsāḥ tridaśāḥ iva vāsavam
23. maheṣvāsāḥ sarvalokasya dhanvinaḥ
tam naravyāghraṃ bhīṣmasya śibiraṃ
prati prayāntaṃ anujagmuḥ ca
bhrātaraḥ maheṣvāsāḥ tridaśāḥ vāsavam iva
23. Great archers, bowmen from all the people, followed that tiger among men who was proceeding towards Bhishma's camp. His brothers, also great archers, followed him just as the gods (amarāḥ) follow Indra (Vāsava).
हयानन्ये समारुह्य गजानन्ये च भारत ।
रथैरन्ये नरश्रेष्ठाः परिवव्रुः समन्ततः ॥२४॥
24. hayānanye samāruhya gajānanye ca bhārata ,
rathairanye naraśreṣṭhāḥ parivavruḥ samantataḥ.
24. hayān anye samāruhya gajān anye ca bhārata
rathaiḥ anye naraśreṣṭhāḥ parivavruḥ samantataḥ
24. bhārata anye hayān samāruhya,
anye gajān (samāruhya),
ca anye naraśreṣṭhāḥ rathaiḥ samantataḥ parivavruḥ
24. O Bhārata, some others mounted horses, others elephants, and yet other excellent men, using chariots, surrounded him from all sides.
आत्तशस्त्राश्च सुहृदो रक्षणार्थं महीपतेः ।
प्रादुर्बभूवुः सहिताः शक्रस्येवामरा दिवि ॥२५॥
25. āttaśastrāśca suhṛdo rakṣaṇārthaṁ mahīpateḥ ,
prādurbabhūvuḥ sahitāḥ śakrasyevāmarā divi.
25. āttaśastrāḥ ca suhṛdaḥ rakṣaṇārthaṃ mahīpateḥ
prādurbabhūvuḥ sahitāḥ śakrasya iva amarāḥ divi
25. ca āttaśastrāḥ suhṛdaḥ mahīpateḥ rakṣaṇārthaṃ sahitāḥ prādurbabhūvuḥ,
divi śakrasya amarāḥ iva
25. And his armed friends appeared together for the protection of the king, just like the gods (amarāḥ) with Indra (Śakra) in heaven.
संपूज्यमानः कुरुभिः कौरवाणां महारथः ।
प्रययौ सदनं राजन्गाङ्गेयस्य यशस्विनः ।
अन्वीयमानः सहितैः सोदरैः सर्वतो नृपः ॥२६॥
26. saṁpūjyamānaḥ kurubhiḥ kauravāṇāṁ mahārathaḥ ,
prayayau sadanaṁ rājangāṅgeyasya yaśasvinaḥ ,
anvīyamānaḥ sahitaiḥ sodaraiḥ sarvato nṛpaḥ.
26. sampūjyamānaḥ kurubhiḥ kauravāṇāṃ
mahārathaḥ prayayau sadanaṃ rājan
gāṅgeyasya yaśasvinaḥ anvīyamānaḥ
sahitaiḥ sodaraiḥ sarvataḥ nṛpaḥ
26. rājan,
kauravāṇāṃ mahārathaḥ nṛpaḥ kurubhiḥ sampūjyamānaḥ sahitaiḥ sodaraiḥ sarvataḥ anvīyamānaḥ yaśasvinaḥ gāṅgeyasya sadanaṃ prayayau.
26. O king, the king (nṛpaḥ), that great warrior (maharatha) among the Kauravas, being highly honored by the Kurus, departed for the abode of the glorious Gangeya (Bhishma), being followed on all sides by his accompanying brothers.
दक्षिणं दक्षिणः काले संभृत्य स्वभुजं तदा ।
हस्तिहस्तोपमं शैक्षं सर्वशत्रुनिबर्हणम् ॥२७॥
27. dakṣiṇaṁ dakṣiṇaḥ kāle saṁbhṛtya svabhujaṁ tadā ,
hastihastopamaṁ śaikṣaṁ sarvaśatrunibarhaṇam.
27. dakṣiṇam dakṣiṇaḥ kāle saṃbhṛtya svabhujam tadā
hastihastopamam śaikṣam sarvaśatrunibarhaṇam
27. tadā dakṣiṇaḥ kāle dakṣiṇam svabhujam hastihastopamam
śaikṣam sarvaśatrunibarhaṇam saṃbhṛtya
27. Then, the skillful (dakṣiṇaḥ) king, at the appropriate moment (kāle), having raised his own right arm (svabhujaṃ) – which was comparable to an elephant's trunk (hastihastopamam), well-trained (śaikṣam), and the annihilator of all enemies (sarvaśatrunibarhaṇam)...
प्रगृह्णन्नञ्जलीन्नॄणामुद्यतान्सर्वतोदिशम् ।
शुश्राव मधुरा वाचो नानादेशनिवासिनाम् ॥२८॥
28. pragṛhṇannañjalīnnṝṇāmudyatānsarvatodiśam ,
śuśrāva madhurā vāco nānādeśanivāsinām.
28. pragṛhṇan añjalīn nṝṇām udyatān sarvatodiśam
śuśrāva madhurā vācaḥ nānādeśanivāsinām
28. (saḥ) sarvatodiśam udyatān nṝṇām añjalīn pragṛhṇan nānādeśanivāsinām madhurā vācaḥ śuśrāva.
28. Receiving the raised folded palms (añjalī) of men from all directions, he heard sweet words from residents of various lands.
संस्तूयमानः सूतैश्च मागधैश्च महायशाः ।
पूजयानश्च तान्सर्वान्सर्वलोकेश्वरेश्वरः ॥२९॥
29. saṁstūyamānaḥ sūtaiśca māgadhaiśca mahāyaśāḥ ,
pūjayānaśca tānsarvānsarvalokeśvareśvaraḥ.

mahāyaśāḥ ca sarvalokeśvareśvaraḥ ca tān sarvān pūjayānaḥ (āsīt).
29. And being highly praised by bards (sūta) and minstrels (māgadha), that very famous (mahāyaśāḥ) one, the lord of the lords of all worlds (sarvalokeśvareśvaraḥ), was also honoring all of them.
प्रदीपैः काञ्चनैस्तत्र गन्धतैलावसेचनैः ।
परिवव्रुर्महात्मानं प्रज्वलद्भिः समन्ततः ॥३०॥
30. pradīpaiḥ kāñcanaistatra gandhatailāvasecanaiḥ ,
parivavrurmahātmānaṁ prajvaladbhiḥ samantataḥ.

30. There, they surrounded the noble one (mahātman) from all sides with golden lamps, which were blazing brightly and filled with fragrant oil.
स तैः परिवृतो राजा प्रदीपैः काञ्चनैः शुभैः ।
शुशुभे चन्द्रमा युक्तो दीप्तैरिव महाग्रहैः ॥३१॥
31. sa taiḥ parivṛto rājā pradīpaiḥ kāñcanaiḥ śubhaiḥ ,
śuśubhe candramā yukto dīptairiva mahāgrahaiḥ.
31. saḥ taiḥ parivṛtaḥ rājā pradīpaiḥ kāñcanaiḥ śubhaiḥ

31. That king, surrounded by those beautiful golden lamps, shone like the moon accompanied by blazing great planets.
कञ्चुकोष्णीषिणस्तत्र वेत्रझर्झरपाणयः ।
प्रोत्सारयन्तः शनकैस्तं जनं सर्वतोदिशम् ॥३२॥
32. kañcukoṣṇīṣiṇastatra vetrajharjharapāṇayaḥ ,
protsārayantaḥ śanakaistaṁ janaṁ sarvatodiśam.

32. There, attendants wearing tunics and turbans, with staffs and clappers in their hands, were slowly pushing the people away in all directions.
संप्राप्य तु ततो राजा भीष्मस्य सदनं शुभम् ।
अवतीर्य हयाच्चापि भीष्मं प्राप्य जनेश्वरः ॥३३॥
33. saṁprāpya tu tato rājā bhīṣmasya sadanaṁ śubham ,
avatīrya hayāccāpi bhīṣmaṁ prāpya janeśvaraḥ.

avatīrya hayāt ca api bhīṣmam prāpya janeśvaraḥ

33. Then, having reached the auspicious dwelling of (Bhishma), and having dismounted from his horse, the king (janeśvara) met (Bhishma).
अभिवाद्य ततो भीष्मं निषण्णः परमासने ।
काञ्चने सर्वतोभद्रे स्पर्ध्यास्तरणसंवृते ।
उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्भीष्मं बाष्पकण्ठोऽश्रुलोचनः ॥३४॥
34. abhivādya tato bhīṣmaṁ niṣaṇṇaḥ paramāsane ,
kāñcane sarvatobhadre spardhyāstaraṇasaṁvṛte ,
uvāca prāñjalirbhīṣmaṁ bāṣpakaṇṭho'śrulocanaḥ.

34. Then, having greeted Bhishma, who was seated on an excellent, golden throne, which was auspicious on all sides and covered with a splendid cushion, he spoke to Bhishma with folded hands, a choked voice, and tearful eyes.
त्वां वयं समुपाश्रित्य संयुगे शत्रुसूदन ।
उत्सहेम रणे जेतुं सेन्द्रानपि सुरासुरान् ॥३५॥
35. tvāṁ vayaṁ samupāśritya saṁyuge śatrusūdana ,
utsahema raṇe jetuṁ sendrānapi surāsurān.

35. O slayer of enemies, by relying on you in battle, we would be able to conquer even the gods and asuras, along with Indra, in warfare.
किमु पाण्डुसुतान्वीरान्ससुहृद्गणबान्धवान् ।
तस्मादर्हसि गाङ्गेय कृपां कर्तुं मयि प्रभो ।
जहि पाण्डुसुतान्वीरान्महेन्द्र इव दानवान् ॥३६॥
36. kimu pāṇḍusutānvīrānsasuhṛdgaṇabāndhavān ,
tasmādarhasi gāṅgeya kṛpāṁ kartuṁ mayi prabho ,
jahi pāṇḍusutānvīrānmahendra iva dānavān.

tasmāt arhasi gāṅgeya
kṛpām kartum mayi prabho jahi

36. (त्वया) वीरान् sasuhṛdgaṇabāndhavān pāṇḍusutān
kimu (jetum utsahema) tasmāt he
gāṅgeya he prabho mayi kṛpām kartum arhasi
mahendraḥ dānavān iva vīrān pāṇḍusutān jahi
36. What then of the heroic sons of Pandu, along with their friends and relatives? Therefore, O son of Ganga (Gāṅgeya), O lord, you ought to show kindness towards me. Destroy the heroic sons of Pandu, just as the great Indra (Mahā-Indra) destroys the Danavas.
पूर्वमुक्तं महाबाहो निहनिष्यामि सोमकान् ।
पाञ्चालान्पाण्डवैः सार्धं करूषांश्चेति भारत ॥३७॥
37. pūrvamuktaṁ mahābāho nihaniṣyāmi somakān ,
pāñcālānpāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṁ karūṣāṁśceti bhārata.

pāñcālān pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham karūṣān ca iti bhārata
37. he mahābāho he bhārata,
pūrvam uktam (mayā yat) "pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham somakān pāñcālān karūṣān ca nihaniṣyāmi" iti
37. O mighty-armed one, O descendant of Bharata, it was previously said (by me): "I shall destroy the Somakas, the Panchalas, and the Karushas, along with the Pandavas."
तद्वचः सत्यमेवास्तु जहि पार्थान्समागतान् ।
सोमकांश्च महेष्वासान्सत्यवाग्भव भारत ॥३८॥
38. tadvacaḥ satyamevāstu jahi pārthānsamāgatān ,
somakāṁśca maheṣvāsānsatyavāgbhava bhārata.
38. tadvacaḥ satyam eva astu jahi pārthān samāgatān
somakān ca maheṣvāsān satyavāk bhava bhārata
38. bhārata! tadvacaḥ satyam eva astu.
samāgatān pārthān ca maheṣvāsān somakān jahi.

38. Let that statement of yours indeed be true. Destroy the assembled Pārthas and the Somakas, who are great archers. Be true to your word, O Bhārata.
दयया यदि वा राजन्द्वेष्यभावान्मम प्रभो ।
मन्दभाग्यतया वापि मम रक्षसि पाण्डवान् ॥३९॥
39. dayayā yadi vā rājandveṣyabhāvānmama prabho ,
mandabhāgyatayā vāpi mama rakṣasi pāṇḍavān.
39. dayayā yadi vā rājan dveṣyabhāvāt mama prabho
| mandabhāgyatayā vā api mama rakṣasi pāṇḍavān
39. rājan prabho! yadi vā dayayā,
vā mama dveṣyabhāvāt,
vā api mama mandabhāgyatayā pāṇḍavān rakṣasi.
39. Whether it is out of compassion, O King, or from a feeling of ill-will towards me, O Lord, or even due to my misfortune, you protect the Pāṇḍavas.
अनुजानीहि समरे कर्णमाहवशोभिनम् ।
स जेष्यति रणे पार्थान्ससुहृद्गणबान्धवान् ॥४०॥
40. anujānīhi samare karṇamāhavaśobhinam ,
sa jeṣyati raṇe pārthānsasuhṛdgaṇabāndhavān.
40. anujānīhi samare karṇam āhavaśobhinam | sa
jeṣyati raṇe pārthān sasuhṛdgaṇabāndhavān
40. samare āhavaśobhinam karṇam anujānīhi.
saḥ raṇe sasuhṛdgaṇabāndhavān pārthān jeṣyati.
40. Permit Karṇa, who is glorious in battle. He will conquer the Pārthas along with their numerous friends and relatives in the fight.
एतावदुक्त्वा नृपतिः पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव ।
नोवाच वचनं किंचिद्भीष्मं भीमपराक्रमम् ॥४१॥
41. etāvaduktvā nṛpatiḥ putro duryodhanastava ,
novāca vacanaṁ kiṁcidbhīṣmaṁ bhīmaparākramam.
41. etāvat uktvā nṛpatiḥ putraḥ duryodhanaḥ tava |
na uvāca vacanam kiṃcit bhīṣmam bhīmaparākramam
41. tava putraḥ nṛpatiḥ duryodhanaḥ etāvat uktvā,
bhīmaparākramam bhīṣmam kiṃcit vacanam na uvāca.
41. Having spoken thus, your son, King Duryodhana, did not say anything further to Bhīṣma, who possessed formidable valor.
