तस्मिन्हते गजानीके पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव ।
भीमसेनं घ्नतेत्येवं सर्वसैन्यान्यचोदयत् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tasminhate gajānīke putro duryodhanastava ,
bhīmasenaṁ ghnatetyevaṁ sarvasainyānyacodayat.

1. Sañjaya said: When that elephant army was slain, your son Duryodhana thus urged all his troops, crying, 'Slay Bhimasena!'
ततः सर्वाण्यनीकानि तव पुत्रस्य शासनात् ।
अभ्यद्रवन्भीमसेनं नदन्तं भैरवान्रवान् ॥२॥
2. tataḥ sarvāṇyanīkāni tava putrasya śāsanāt ,
abhyadravanbhīmasenaṁ nadantaṁ bhairavānravān.

2. Then, at the command of your son, all the armies charged towards Bhimasena, who was uttering terrible roars.
तं बलौघमपर्यन्तं देवैरपि दुरुत्सहम् ।
आपतन्तं सुदुष्पारं समुद्रमिव पर्वणि ॥३॥
3. taṁ balaughamaparyantaṁ devairapi durutsaham ,
āpatantaṁ suduṣpāraṁ samudramiva parvaṇi.

3. That boundless torrent of strength (Bhima), unbearable even for the gods, rushing forth, was as extremely difficult to cross as an ocean at the time of its full tide.
रथनागाश्वकलिलं शङ्खदुन्दुभिनादितम् ।
अथानन्तमपारं च नरेन्द्रस्तिमितह्रदम् ॥४॥
4. rathanāgāśvakalilaṁ śaṅkhadundubhināditam ,
athānantamapāraṁ ca narendrastimitahradam.

4. Moreover, [the army was] permeated with chariots, elephants, and horses, resounding with conchs and drums, boundless and immeasurable, belonging to a king whose mind was tranquil like a lake (hrada).
तं भीमसेनः समरे महोदधिमिवापरम् ।
सेनासागरमक्षोभ्यं वेलेव समवारयत् ॥५॥
5. taṁ bhīmasenaḥ samare mahodadhimivāparam ,
senāsāgaramakṣobhyaṁ veleva samavārayat.

5. In battle, Bhimasena, like a shore (velā), checked that unshakeable, ocean-like army, which was like another great ocean.
तदाश्चर्यमपश्याम श्रद्धेयमपि चाद्भुतम् ।
भीमसेनस्य समरे राजन्कर्मातिमानुषम् ॥६॥
6. tadāścaryamapaśyāma śraddheyamapi cādbhutam ,
bhīmasenasya samare rājankarmātimānuṣam.
6. tadā āścaryam apaśyāma śraddheyam api ca adbhutam
bhīmasenasya samare rājan karma atimānuṣam
6. rājan tadā samare bhīmasenasya śraddheyam api
ca adbhutam atimānuṣam karma āścaryam apaśyāma
6. Then, O King, in battle, we witnessed Bhimasena's superhuman (atimānuṣa) deed (karma), which was both amazing and truly worthy of belief (śraddhā).
उदीर्णां पृथिवीं सर्वां साश्वां सरथकुञ्जराम् ।
असंभ्रमं भीमसेनो गदया समताडयत् ॥७॥
7. udīrṇāṁ pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ sāśvāṁ sarathakuñjarām ,
asaṁbhramaṁ bhīmaseno gadayā samatāḍayat.
7. udīrṇām pṛthivīm sarvām sa-aśvām sa-ratha-kuñjarām
asaṃbhramam bhīmasenaḥ gadayā samatāḍayat
7. bhīmasenaḥ asaṃbhramam gadayā udīrṇām sarvām
sa-aśvām sa-ratha-kuñjarām pṛthivīm samatāḍayat
7. Without agitation (asaṃbhrama), Bhimasena struck with his mace the entire agitated (udīrṇa) host (pṛthivī) on the earth, which included horses, chariots, and elephants.
स संवार्य बलौघांस्तान्गदया रथिनां वरः ।
अतिष्ठत्तुमुले भीमो गिरिर्मेरुरिवाचलः ॥८॥
8. sa saṁvārya balaughāṁstāngadayā rathināṁ varaḥ ,
atiṣṭhattumule bhīmo girirmerurivācalaḥ.
8. sa saṃvārya balaughān tān gadayā rathinām varaḥ
atiṣṭhat tumule bhīmaḥ giriḥ meruḥ iva acalaḥ
8. rathinām varaḥ sa bhīmaḥ tān balaughān gadayā

8. He, Bhīma, the best of charioteers, having held back those throngs of warriors with his mace, stood unmoving in the fierce battle, like Mount Meru, a steadfast mountain.
तस्मिन्सुतुमुले घोरे काले परमदारुणे ।
भ्रातरश्चैव पुत्राश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः ॥९॥
9. tasminsutumule ghore kāle paramadāruṇe ,
bhrātaraścaiva putrāśca dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pārṣataḥ.
9. tasmin sutumule ghore kāle paramadāruṇe bhrātaraḥ
ca eva putrāḥ ca dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca pārṣataḥ

9. In that exceedingly fierce, dreadful, and utterly terrible time (of battle), the brothers, the sons, and Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Pṛṣata (Pārṣata)... (The sentence is incomplete and continues into the next verse).
द्रौपदेयाभिमन्युश्च शिखण्डी च महारथः ।
न प्राजहन्भीमसेनं भये जाते महाबलम् ॥१०॥
10. draupadeyābhimanyuśca śikhaṇḍī ca mahārathaḥ ,
na prājahanbhīmasenaṁ bhaye jāte mahābalam.
10. draupadeyāḥ abhimanyuḥ ca śikhaṇḍī ca mahārathaḥ
na prāgahan bhīmasenam bhaye jāte mahābalam

10. ...the sons of Draupadī, Abhimanyu, and Śikhaṇḍī, the great warrior, did not abandon Bhīmasena, the mighty one, even when great fear arose.
ततः शैक्यायसीं गुर्वीं प्रगृह्य महतीं गदाम् ।
अवधीत्तावकान्योधान्दण्डपाणिरिवान्तकः ।
पोथयन्रथवृन्दानि वाजिवृन्दानि चाभिभूः ॥११॥
11. tataḥ śaikyāyasīṁ gurvīṁ pragṛhya mahatīṁ gadām ,
avadhīttāvakānyodhāndaṇḍapāṇirivāntakaḥ ,
pothayanrathavṛndāni vājivṛndāni cābhibhūḥ.
11. tataḥ śaikyāyasīm gurvīm pragṛhya
mahatīm gadām avadhīt tāvakān yodhān
daṇḍapāṇiḥ iva antakaḥ pothayan
rathavṛndāni vājivṛndāni ca abhibhūḥ
11. tataḥ abhibhūḥ mahatīm gurvīm
śaikyāyasīm gadām pragṛhya daṇḍapāṇiḥ iva

vājivṛndāni ca tāvakān yodhān avadhīt
11. Then, grasping his massive, heavy, iron mace, he, the conqueror, struck down your (Kaurava) warriors, like Antaka (the god of death) holding his staff, crushing multitudes of chariots and multitudes of horses.
व्यचरत्समरे भीमो युगान्ते पावको यथा ।
विनिघ्नन्समरे सर्वान्युगान्ते कालवद्विभुः ॥१२॥
12. vyacaratsamare bhīmo yugānte pāvako yathā ,
vinighnansamare sarvānyugānte kālavadvibhuḥ.

vinighnan samare sarvān yugānte kālavat vibhuḥ

12. Bhima moved about in battle like the destructive fire at the end of a cosmic age, slaying all in combat, mighty like Time (Kāla) at the end of an eon.
ऊरुवेगेन संकर्षन्रथजालानि पाण्डवः ।
प्रमर्दयन्गजान्सर्वान्नड्वलानीव कुञ्जरः ॥१३॥
13. ūruvegena saṁkarṣanrathajālāni pāṇḍavaḥ ,
pramardayangajānsarvānnaḍvalānīva kuñjaraḥ.

pramardayan gajān sarvān naḍvalāni iva kuñjaraḥ
13. pāṇḍavaḥ ūruvegena rathajālāni saṃkarṣan sarvān

13. The Pāṇḍava (Bhima), with the force of his thighs, dragged away arrays of chariots, crushing all the elephants just as an (enraged) elephant tramples beds of reeds.
मृद्नन्रथेभ्यो रथिनो गजेभ्यो गजयोधिनः ।
सादिनश्चाश्वपृष्ठेभ्यो भूमौ चैव पदातिनः ॥१४॥
14. mṛdnanrathebhyo rathino gajebhyo gajayodhinaḥ ,
sādinaścāśvapṛṣṭhebhyo bhūmau caiva padātinaḥ.
14. mṛdnan rathebhyaḥ rathinaḥ gajebhyaḥ gajayodhinaḥ
sādinaḥ ca aśvapṛṣṭebhyaḥ bhūmau ca eva padātinaḥ

14. Crushing charioteers from their chariots, elephant-warriors from their elephants, and horsemen from horseback, as well as foot soldiers on the ground.
तत्र तत्र हतैश्चापि मनुष्यगजवाजिभिः ।
रणाङ्गणं तदभवन्मृत्योराघातसंनिभम् ॥१५॥
15. tatra tatra hataiścāpi manuṣyagajavājibhiḥ ,
raṇāṅgaṇaṁ tadabhavanmṛtyorāghātasaṁnibham.
15. tatra tatra hataiḥ ca api manuṣyagajavājibhiḥ
raṇāṅgaṇam tat abhavat mṛtyoḥ āghātasaṃnibham
15. tat raṇāṅgaṇam tatra tatra hataiḥ manuṣyagajavājibhiḥ
ca api mṛtyoḥ āghātasaṃnibham abhavat
15. That battlefield, here and there covered with slain men, elephants, and horses, became resembling the impact of Death.
पिनाकमिव रुद्रस्य क्रुद्धस्याभिघ्नतः पशून् ।
यमदण्डोपमामुग्रामिन्द्राशनिसमस्वनाम् ।
ददृशुर्भीमसेनस्य रौद्रां विशसनीं गदाम् ॥१६॥
16. pinākamiva rudrasya kruddhasyābhighnataḥ paśūn ,
yamadaṇḍopamāmugrāmindrāśanisamasvanām ,
dadṛśurbhīmasenasya raudrāṁ viśasanīṁ gadām.
16. pinākam iva rudrasya kruddhasya
abhighnataḥ paśūn yamadaṇḍa-upamām
ugrām indrāśani-sama-svanām dadṛśuḥ
bhīmasenasya raudrām viśasanīm gadām
16. rudrasya kruddhasya paśūn abhighnataḥ pinākam iva,

bhīmasenasya raudrām viśasanīm gadām dadṛśuḥ
16. They saw Bhimasena's fierce, destructive mace. It was terrible, resembling Yama's rod of punishment, and its sound was like Indra's thunderbolt. It was (as dreadful) as Rudra's Pinaka bow when he, enraged, strikes down creatures.
आविध्यतो गदां तस्य कौन्तेयस्य महात्मनः ।
बभौ रूपं महाघोरं कालस्येव युगक्षये ॥१७॥
17. āvidhyato gadāṁ tasya kaunteyasya mahātmanaḥ ,
babhau rūpaṁ mahāghoraṁ kālasyeva yugakṣaye.
17. āvidhyataḥ gadām tasya kaunteyasya mahātmanaḥ
babhau rūpam mahāghoram kālasya iva yugakṣaye
17. tasya kaunteyasya mahātmanaḥ gadām āvidhyataḥ
rūpam mahāghoram yugakṣaye kālasya iva babhau
17. As that great-souled son of Kunti (Bhimasena) whirled his mace, his form appeared exceedingly dreadful, like the very embodiment of Time (Kāla) at the dissolution of an age (yuga).
तं तथा महतीं सेनां द्रावयन्तं पुनः पुनः ।
दृष्ट्वा मृत्युमिवायान्तं सर्वे विमनसोऽभवन् ॥१८॥
18. taṁ tathā mahatīṁ senāṁ drāvayantaṁ punaḥ punaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā mṛtyumivāyāntaṁ sarve vimanaso'bhavan.
18. tam tathā mahatīm senām drāvayantam punaḥ punaḥ
dṛṣṭvā mṛtyum iva āyāntam sarve vimanasaḥ abhavan
18. taṃ tathā mahatīm senām punaḥ punaḥ drāvayantam
mṛtyum iva āyāntam dṛṣṭvā sarve vimanasaḥ abhavan
18. Having seen him thus routing the great army again and again, as if he were approaching Death (mṛtyu) personified, all became disheartened.
यतो यतः प्रेक्षते स्म गदामुद्यम्य पाण्डवः ।
तेन तेन स्म दीर्यन्ते सर्वसैन्यानि भारत ॥१९॥
19. yato yataḥ prekṣate sma gadāmudyamya pāṇḍavaḥ ,
tena tena sma dīryante sarvasainyāni bhārata.
19. yataḥ yataḥ prekṣate sma gadām udyamya pāṇḍavaḥ
tena tena sma dīryante sarvasainyāni bhārata
19. bhārata,
pāṇḍavaḥ gadām udyamya yataḥ yataḥ sma prekṣate,
tena tena sarvasainyāni sma dīryante
19. O Bhārata (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), wherever the son of Pāṇḍu, having raised his mace, cast his gaze, in that very direction all the armies were scattered and torn apart.
प्रदारयन्तं सैन्यानि बलौघेनापराजितम् ।
ग्रसमानमनीकानि व्यादितास्यमिवान्तकम् ॥२०॥
20. pradārayantaṁ sainyāni balaughenāparājitam ,
grasamānamanīkāni vyāditāsyamivāntakam.

20. He was tearing apart the armies, undefeated by his vast power, devouring the battalions like Death (Antaka) with its mouth wide open.
तं तथा भीमकर्माणं प्रगृहीतमहागदम् ।
दृष्ट्वा वृकोदरं भीष्मः सहसैव समभ्ययात् ॥२१॥
21. taṁ tathā bhīmakarmāṇaṁ pragṛhītamahāgadam ,
dṛṣṭvā vṛkodaraṁ bhīṣmaḥ sahasaiva samabhyayāt.
21. tam tathā bhīmakarmāṇam pragṛhītamahāgadam
dṛṣṭvā vṛkodaram bhīṣmaḥ sahasā eva samabhyayāt
21. bhīṣmaḥ tam vṛkodaram tathā bhīmakarmāṇam
pragṛhītamahāgadam dṛṣṭvā sahasā eva samabhyayāt
21. Upon seeing him – Bhima (Vṛkodara), who was performing formidable deeds (karma) and holding a great mace – Bhishma suddenly advanced.
महता मेघघोषेण रथेनादित्यवर्चसा ।
छादयञ्शरवर्षेण पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान् ॥२२॥
22. mahatā meghaghoṣeṇa rathenādityavarcasā ,
chādayañśaravarṣeṇa parjanya iva vṛṣṭimān.

chādayan śaravarṣeṇa parjanya iva vṛṣṭimān
22. (saḥ) mahatā meghaghoṣeṇa ādityavarcasā rathena
śaravarṣeṇa chādayan parjanya iva vṛṣṭimān
22. With his great chariot, which sounded like thunder (meghaghoṣa) and possessed the brilliance of the sun (ādityavarcas), he covered (the enemy) with a shower of arrows (śaravarṣa), just like Parjanya, the rain-god, showering rain.
तमायान्तं तथा दृष्ट्वा व्यात्ताननमिवान्तकम् ।
भीष्मं भीमो महाबाहुः प्रत्युदीयादमर्षणः ॥२३॥
23. tamāyāntaṁ tathā dṛṣṭvā vyāttānanamivāntakam ,
bhīṣmaṁ bhīmo mahābāhuḥ pratyudīyādamarṣaṇaḥ.
23. tam āyāntam tathā dṛṣṭvā vyāttānanam iva antakam
bhīṣmam bhīmaḥ mahābāhuḥ pratyudīyāt amarṣaṇaḥ
23. mahābāhuḥ amarṣaṇaḥ bhīmaḥ tam bhīṣmam tathā
vyāttānanam iva antakam āyāntam dṛṣṭvā pratyudīyāt
23. Upon seeing Bhishma approaching in that manner, like Death (Antaka) with its mouth wide open, the mighty-armed (mahābāhu) Bhima, full of wrath, advanced to meet him.
तस्मिन्क्षणे सात्यकिः सत्यसंधः शिनिप्रवीरोऽभ्यपतत्पितामहम् ।
निघ्नन्नमित्रान्धनुषा दृढेन स कम्पयंस्तव पुत्रस्य सेनाम् ॥२४॥
24. tasminkṣaṇe sātyakiḥ satyasaṁdhaḥ; śinipravīro'bhyapatatpitāmaham ,
nighnannamitrāndhanuṣā dṛḍhena; sa kampayaṁstava putrasya senām.
24. tasmin kṣaṇe sātyakiḥ satyasaṃdhaḥ
śinipravīraḥ abhyapatat pitāmaham
| nighnan amitrān dhanuṣā dṛḍhena
sa kampayan tava putrasya senām
24. tasmin kṣaṇe satyasaṃdhaḥ śinipravīraḥ sātyakiḥ dṛḍhena dhanuṣā amitrān nighnan tava putrasya senām kampayan saḥ pitāmaham abhyapatat.
24. At that moment, Satyakī, true to his vows (satyasaṃdha), the foremost hero of the Śinis, attacked the grandfather (Bhīṣma), striking down enemies with his strong bow, and indeed, shaking the army of your son (Duryodhana).
तं यान्तमश्वै रजतप्रकाशैः शरान्धमन्तं धनुषा दृढेन ।
नाशक्नुवन्वारयितुं तदानीं सर्वे गणा भारत ये त्वदीयाः ॥२५॥
25. taṁ yāntamaśvai rajataprakāśaiḥ; śarāndhamantaṁ dhanuṣā dṛḍhena ,
nāśaknuvanvārayituṁ tadānīṁ; sarve gaṇā bhārata ye tvadīyāḥ.
25. tam yāntam aśvaiḥ rajataprakāśaiḥ
śarān dhamantam dhanuṣā dṛḍhena
| na aśaknuvan vārayitum tadānīm
sarve gaṇāḥ bhārata ye tvadīyāḥ
25. bhārata,
ye tvadīyāḥ sarve gaṇāḥ tadānīm rajataprakāśaiḥ aśvaiḥ dṛḍhena dhanuṣā śarān dhamantam tam yāntam vārayitum na aśaknuvan.
25. O Bhārata (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), at that time, all your troops were unable to stop him as he advanced with horses shining like silver, fiercely shooting arrows with his strong bow.
अविध्यदेनं निशितैः शराग्रैरलम्बुसो राजवरार्श्यशृङ्गिः ।
तं वै चतुर्भिः प्रतिविध्य वीरो नप्ता शिनेरभ्यपतद्रथेन ॥२६॥
26. avidhyadenaṁ niśitaiḥ śarāgrai;ralambuso rājavarārśyaśṛṅgiḥ ,
taṁ vai caturbhiḥ pratividhya vīro; naptā śinerabhyapatadrathena.
26. avidhyat enam niśitaiḥ śarāgraiḥ
alaṃbusaḥ rājavarārśyaśṛṅgiḥ |
tam vai caturbhiḥ pratividhya
vīraḥ naptā śineḥ abhyapatat rathena
26. rājavarārśyaśṛṅgiḥ alaṃbusaḥ enam niśitaiḥ śarāgraiḥ avidhyat vai vīraḥ śineḥ naptā caturbhiḥ tam pratividhya rathena abhyapatat.
26. Alambusa, the best of kings (rākṣasas) with his horn-like crests, pierced him (Satyakī) with sharp arrowheads. But the brave grandson of Śini (Satyakī), having pierced him (Alambusa) in return with four (arrows), rushed towards him with his chariot.
अन्वागतं वृष्णिवरं निशम्य मध्ये रिपूणां परिवर्तमानम् ।
प्रावर्तयन्तं कुरुपुंगवांश्च पुनः पुनश्च प्रणदन्तमाजौ ॥२७॥
27. anvāgataṁ vṛṣṇivaraṁ niśamya; madhye ripūṇāṁ parivartamānam ,
prāvartayantaṁ kurupuṁgavāṁśca; punaḥ punaśca praṇadantamājau.
27. anvāgatam vṛṣṇivaram niśamya
madhye ripūṇām parivartamānam |
prāvartayantam kurupuṅgavān ca
punaḥ punaḥ ca praṇadantam ājau
27. anvāgatam madhye ripūṇām parivartamānam kurupuṅgavān prāvartayantam punaḥ punaḥ ca ājau praṇadantam vṛṣṇivaram niśamya.
27. Having perceived the excellent Vṛṣṇi (Satyakī), who had followed, moving amidst the enemies, causing the foremost Kuru warriors to turn back, and repeatedly roaring loudly in battle.
नाशक्नुवन्वारयितुं वरिष्ठं मध्यंदिने सूर्यमिवातपन्तम् ।
न तत्र कश्चिन्नविषण्ण आसीदृते राजन्सोमदत्तस्य पुत्रात् ॥२८॥
28. nāśaknuvanvārayituṁ variṣṭhaṁ; madhyaṁdine sūryamivātapantam ,

28. rājan (O king),
(te - implied subject) variṣṭham (the foremost) madhyaṃdine (at midday) sūryam iva (like the sun) ātapantam (scorching) vārayitum (to stop) na aśaknuvan (they were unable).
tatra (there) somadattasya putrāt ṛte (except for Somadatta's son) kaścit (anyone) viṣaṇṇaḥ āsīt (was dejected).
28. They were unable to stop the foremost warrior, who was scorching them like the midday sun. O king, everyone there was disheartened except for Somadatta's son.
स ह्याददानो धनुरुग्रवेगं भूरिश्रवा भारत सौमदत्तिः ।
दृष्ट्वा रथान्स्वान्व्यपनीयमानान्प्रत्युद्ययौ सात्यकिं योद्धुमिच्छन् ॥२९॥

29. bhārata (O Bhārata) hi (indeed) saḥ (he) bhūriśravāḥ (Bhūriśravas) saumadattiḥ (the son of Somadatta) ugravegam (of fierce power) dhanuḥ (bow) ādadānaḥ (wielding) svān (his own) rathān (chariots) vyapanīyamānān (being driven back) dṛṣṭvā (having seen) yoddhum (to fight) icchan (desiring) sātyakim (Sātyaki) pratyudyayau (advanced to meet).
29. O Bhārata, indeed, Bhūriśravas, the son of Somadatta, wielding his bow of fierce power, seeing his own chariots being driven back, advanced to meet Sātyaki, desiring to fight.
